Site inspection is an important component of safety management system. In current practices, the inspectors evaluate the safety condition on a construction site with the assistance of a standardised checklist. However, the checklist emphasizes on evaluating the implementation of safety management system, but provides limited task-specific check items for assessing whether the individual construction tasks are conducted under safe condition and in a safe manner. To address this issue, the research presented in this paper aims to provide safety practitioners with comprehensive and taskspecific safety information to promote effective risk identification and facilitate strategic risk control during site inspection. Specifically, this research first builds a project-specific safety information database, which stores potential risks and control measures for each construction task. The research team then develops a mobile decision support tool to retrieve information from the database and support safer decision-making on site. The tool supports users in two ways: one is to provide daily risk checklists and risk control strategies to guide step-by-step inspection alongside the project schedule; the other is to let users input any safety-related keywords during the safety inspection process and the tool returns relevant safety information by applying text mining algorithms. It is ongoing research. This paper presents an overall research framework and discusses the progress in developing safety database and data retrieval concepts. The outcome of the project will help enhance safety management practices and reduce possible risky working conditions on a construction site.

Engineering problems amenable to geophysical attack are illustrated by specific examples. The various methods available, accuracy of results, and costs are treated. In civil engineering, geophysics solves specific problems; as for example, what is the depth to bed-rock along the axis of a proposed dam? The area to be surveyed is of limited extent, and the subsurface information .sought is relatively near the surface. The engineering geophysicist is not called upon to investigate geological basins or extensive mineralized areas or to probe for data to thousands of feet in depth. The geophysical tools employed in the three fields are, however, quite similar; the differences are mainly in the objectives.The Natural Geophysical ExplorationThe terms geophysics and geophysical exploration have been used heretofore and will .be employed in what follows. "It is well understood that, apart from particle hydrophobicity, the flotation process is strongly influenced by the cell hydrodynamics. Once the chemical conditions were optimized and fixed, the flotation rate is essentially determined by impeller speed and the air flow rate.The collection efficiency in flotation is a product of collision, attachment and stability/detachment efficiencies. The collision efficiency for a given particle diameter is increased by decreasing the bubble size and bubble velocity as well as increasing the power input to the cell. The attachment efficiency, however, is defined by bubble size and its velocity. The detachment/stability depends on the relative magnitudes of the attachment force between the bubble and particles and the detachment force acting on the bubble-particle aggregates. For the particles having specific contact angle, the stability decreases as the energy input increases. Therefore, there must be an optimum energy dissipation to maximize recover of defined size fraction.A comprehensive laboratory study was devoted to determine the effect of power input in recovery of finely grind Cu-Ni bearing ore. Several flotation tests were conducted to define the hydrodynamic parameters for a laboratory scale Runge cell under different impeller speeds. An increase in flotation recovery of finely ground ore was observed when the impeller speed was increased from 450 to 1,200 rpm. The experimental results have shown increasing in water recovery and improving in flotation kinetics of fines by increasing the power input to the flotation cell. Implementation of the Wark flotation model to the experimental data revealed a good correlation between the experimental data and the model. For the particles having enough hydrophobicity the flotation rate increases by increasing the impeller speed due to a higher value for collision efficiency within the cell."

SMS Group (SMSG) has always been concerned about safety aspects of electric smelter plants for the ferro-alloy and non-ferrous industry. The awareness for safety increased significantly over the past decades and also SMSG contributed with its design features to a safer operation. Today, safety aspects are not only part of the smelter design but also of the overall plant layout. Explosions in electric smelters are rare, but have a huge impact on peoples’ lives, on equipment and on production. For this reason, SMSG wanted to have a better overview of explosions within the smelting industry in order to see if useful statistics could be extracted. Generally, there is a lack of statistics regarding explosions in the electric smelting industry, and not enough information is collected or published. A significant portion of the explosions seems to be water related. Many companies, both operating and engineering, are trying to handle the risks of water, and apply methods to detect water leakages. Installing such a system is a management decision and management has then to make sure the system is properly implemented. The disadvantages and limitations of these systems should be carefully considered and communicated to operators and authorities.

This paper gives an account of the laboratory testing, plant testing and final inclusion of the two-stage sulphuric acid leaching process in the Milliken mill. Operational results for September, 1962, are presented, showing a uranium extraction of 95.5 per cent, with a saving of some 16 lbs. of 100 per cent H~S04 and some 9 lbs. of lime per ton milled. Methods for effecting further improvements in the process are indicated. HISTORY P RIOR to the incorporation of two-stage leaching, the process for the treatment of uranium ores at Milliken consisted of a single-stage sulphuric acid leach, followed by a solution recovery step involving washing in thickeners and two-stage filtration. The thickener overflow solution was subsequently concentrated and purified by ion exchange, and the uranium was recovered, by two-stage precipitation, as ammonium diuranate. This paper presents preliminary results of a project aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the genesis of gold mineralization in northern Saskatchewan using lithogeochemistry. The properties sampled were: Weedy Lake (B Zone), Waddy Lake (Komis Zone) and Wedge Lake (Twin Zone) in the La Range belt, and the Rio mine in the Flin Flon area. Although the three vein-type deposits rudied here (Weedy Lake. Waddy Lake, Rio deposit) occur in different geological situation . a common gold deposition mechanism appears to have been active at all three location . Hydrothermal fluids carrying sulphur in solution in exces of gold thio-complexes moved through fractured host-rocks until they reached a site where pyrite precipitation wa triggered. As pyrite precipitated, the a/ aAu activity ratio of the fluid decreased. until a critical thre hold was reached and gold thio-complexe were de tabilized . resulting in the co-precipitation of gold and pyrite. The conditions triggering the precipitation of pyrite appear to have been: the abundance of iron in host-rock ~ilicates at Waddy Lake. and temperature decrease upon the reaching of structural trap~ at both Weedy Lake and the Rio deposit. with additional involvement of carbonatizationrelated reactions between fluid and host-rocks for the latter. In addition to pyrite precipitation , potassic alteration of the mafic metavolcanics is observed at Waddy Lake. while at the Rio deposit, the extensive carbonatization of the host-rocks i coupled with the deposition of chlorite that may have been remobilized from the altered mafic host rocks. In both the B Zone at Weedy Lake and the Komis Zone at Waddy Lake, a di tinct vanadium signature give some clue about the direction in which the hydrothermal fluids have moved . and the interpretation made is con istent with the geological ituation in either case. As for the Wedge Lake deposits, the distinct base metals-precious metals a sociation within a sulphide-facies iron formation confirm the volcanic exhalative origin of this gold mineralization .

Waste waters and industrial effluents containing toxic heavy metals such as Pb, Hg, As and Cr, beyond permissible limits (0.1 ppm, 0.01 ppm, 0.02 ppm and 0.05 ppm, respectively) (WHO, 2011), pose serious threats to the ecosystem, when discharged into the environment. It thus becomes imperative to monitor the concentration of the toxic heavy metals and treat them before discharging. In this study with the above objective in mind, a microbial sensor has been developed using P. aeruginosa cells drop coated onto a carbon paste electrode (CPE) for the detection of Pb(II) ions in aqueous solutions. Detailed biosorption experiments confirmed that complete bioremoval of lead could be achieved using P. aeruginosa cells under optimum conditions of pH and biomass loading. For the electro-analytical determination, the Pb(II) ions were initially preconcentrated on the P. aeruginosa modified CPE, reduced and then anodically detected with oxidation of Pb0 using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) technique. All the experiments were carried out in the presence of 0.1 M sodium acetate buffer and KNO3 as background electrolyte. The parameters namely pH, scan rate, biomass loading, deposition potential, deposition time and concentration of Pb(II) ions were optimized for the biomass modified CPE, to obtain maximum voltammetric response. Under the optimized conditions of pH 5.6, scan rate of 0.008 V/s, biomass content of 1.7–1.8×109 cells/mL, deposition potential of –1.2 V, and deposition time of 500 s, the developed microbial sensor showed a linear response for the peak current between 0.5×10-5 M and 1×10-8 M of Pb(II) ions with the R2 value of 0.9979. The lowest limit of detection (LLOD) was determined as 2.4×10-7M of Pb(II) ions (0.05 ppm). The redox mechanisms of Pb(II) ions on the P. aeruginosa modified CPE surface are discussed.

This paper reviews this legislation as it relates to coal mining, and how it is being implemented.Although the principles of land reclamation are reason-ably well understood, reclamation of industrial wasteland has never previously been attempted under such rugged conditions as occur in the Canadian Rockies and a new methodology is being developed.The resolution of the technical and organizational problems involved are discussed and the techniques and experiences described."

Nonlinear time-dependent response analysis of salt cavern under extreme loads in disaster mode is of great importance to the safety and disaster prevention of gas storage group. Uncontrolled blowout is one of the extreme conditions for compressed-air cavern operation. Based on the geological structure of Jintan salt deposit, China, the numerical model of the complete process of water solution, cyclic operation, and internal pressure runaway was developed. The effects of rapid unloading on the stress filed, the progressive failure of surrounding rock, the volume convergence of storage cavern, and the ground subsidence were simulated employing an elasto-viscoplastic damage constitutive equation for rock salt. The results indicate that the damage and failure zones propagate much larger in the mudstone interlayer than in the host salt. The volume of damage and failure zones surrounding salt cavern induced by unloading process is 5~6 times that of cyclic injection and withdrawal process. The average volume convergence rate of salt cavern reaches 0.012%/d~0.013%/d, which is 6~6.5 times that induced by cyclic operation. The ground subsidence exhibits a typical funnel curve. The affected region of ground subsidence due to rapid unloading in the blowout period is about two times the maximum cavern diameters. Furthermore, double cavern analysis reveals that the interaction between adjacent caverns may be ignored so long as the pillar width is larger than two times the maximum cavern diameters.

"The paper discusses the accuracy of magnetic inspections of corroded hoist ropes. It quantifies the error of measured LMA (loss of metallic area) caused by presence in the rope of ferromagnetic products of corrosion. The paper concludes that in mining practice this error is not significant. Hoist Rope Corrosion and its AssessmentCorrosion is one of the most common forms of wire rope wear. For ropes working in wet mine shafts, ropes used by the fishing industry and, in general, ropes working in humid and chemically active environments, corrosion wear is usually the prime reason for rope discard. In most mining applications, rope corrosion is accompanied by fatigue cracking of wires, abrasion of external wires, internal nicking and other forms of wear.Quantification of corrosion damage in ropes using standard inspection procedures and examination methods is very difficult. Qualitative comparisons are sometimes used to describe the degree of rope corrosion to compensate for the lack of quantitative measures (SABS 0293, 1996). If available, the results of magnetic examinations of ropes may be of help in assessing their corrosion weakening.Magnetic rope examination requires that the rope first be magnetized. After that, the rope magnetic flux and the leakage flux along the rope are measured. The first is assumed to be directly proportional to rope metallic area (LMA) and its changes are indicative of the rope’s loss of breaking strength (LBS). Existence of the second indicates existence of local faults (LF) in the inspected rope. As the corrosion of rope results in development of corrosion cracks and in loss of rope metallic area, both the LF and the LMA should be used to quantify the level of rope corrosion. More specifically, the changes to the amplitude of the LF signal are considered to provide qualitative information on rope corrosion (Hansel et al., 1990), while those of the LMA signal are believed to provide quantitative information (Geller and Rousseau, 1990; Golosinski, 1996)."

Manganese nodules form at the sediment surface of abyssal plains throughout the global ocean at water depths of about 4000-6500 m. The nodules form a continuum from purely hydrogenetic (all metals from seawater) to purely diagenetic (all metals from sediment pore waters), which will determine which metals of potential economic interest are enriched in the nodules. Another important factor in metal enrichment is whether diagenesis in the bottom sediment is oxic or suboxic. There are several nodule fields in the deep ocean that have received much attention with regards to economic potential, the most important being the Clarion-Clipperton zone (CCZ) in the NE Pacific, where the International Seabed Authority (ISA) has signed 12 contracts for exploration areas, each spanning 75,000 square kilometers. Those nodules are rich in nickel (mean 1.3 wt. %), copper (mean 1.1 %), and manganese (28%), with moderate amounts of cobalt (mean 0.2%), molybdenum (587 g/t), and lithium (129 g/t). A conservative estimate is that there exists 21,100 million dry tonnes of nodules in the CCZ, yielding more manganese, twice the nickel, three times the cobalt, and four times the yttrium than the entire land-based reserve base (economic plus marginally economic plus subeconomic reserves) for each metal. Total rare-earth elements (REEs) as oxides average 0.09% in CCZ nodules, a potential byproduct even at that grade because the heavy REE complement averages 26%, compared to less than 1% for the large land-based carbonatite REE deposits. The price for HREEs is much greater than for the light REEs. For comparison, the REEs in deep-ocean ferromanganese crusts are 3 to 5 times greater than nodules and the HREE complement averages 18%. Of the 12 CCZ contracts, 7 are with States (China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Russia, and a group of States (IOM); and 5 are with companies: G-Tec Sea Mineral Resources NV, Nauru Ocean Resources Inc. (NORI); Tonga Offshore Mining Ltd (TOML), UK Seabed Resources Ltd (Lockheed UK), and Marawa Research and Exploration Ltd. Three other nodule fields that have received attention are in the Peru Basin, which has nodules very rich in manganese (34%) and lithium (mean 311 g/t), the Penrhyn Basin (Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone), with nodules very rich in cobalt (mean 0.4%); and the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB), where India has an exploration contract with the ISA. CIPB nodules have mean nickel, copper, and manganese contents of 1.1%, 1.0%, and 24% respectively.

"Rare earth separation by solvent extraction (SX) requires multiple separation plants each consisting of many extract, scrub, and strip stages to separate the individual metals. SX modeling advances have brought benefits to circuit design and process optimization by quickly narrowing test conditions without the need for exhaustive laboratory studies. Modeling can be used to optimize circuit configuration, O/A ratios, and acidities, which allows for CAPEX and OPEX savings. A comparison between pilot plant data and the results expected from modeling is presented for rare earth separations with CYANEX® 572.INTRODUCTIONRare earth separations can be difficult due to limited separation between the elements (Xie, Zhang, Dreisinger, & Doyle, 2014). This requires relatively complex solvent extraction circuits utilizing multiple extract, scrub, and strip stages as well as multiple SX configurations to achieve the desired metal purities. Designing rare earth circuits can be complex, and significant time and testing may be necessary to determine the required staging and optimal conditions.Circuit modeling for rare earth separations has been introduced to the industry using CYANEX® 572 extractant (Soderstrom, McCallum, Jakovljevic, & Quilodran, 2014). CYANEX® 572 is an acidic organophosphorus extractant formulation which has a weaker ligand-metal complex strength than that of the traditionally used phosphonic acid extractants. This allows efficient extraction while requiring a significantly lower acid concentration for stripping (Wang, Li, Zhao, Dong, & Sun, 2015). The reduced acid requirement in strip is expected to provide OPEX savings.The modeling can be utilized to quickly determine the required acidity and organic/aqueous (O/A) ratio for a given separation. It is also expected to reduce CAPEX requirements as optimal staging can be determined, and implemented.CYANEX® 572, combined with modeling, was utilized to produce a purified dysprosium (Dy) stream. To achieve this separation, multiple SX circuits were designed and operational conditions specified to separate Dy from the mixed rare earth chloride feed."

"Developments in understanding the brittle fracture of rock over the past two decades ultimately led to the acceptance of a cohesion-weakening-friction-strengthening model as an appropriate strategy for the modelling of spalling using a continuum approach. This strength model has been used to replicate observed failure depths and geometries for a number of case studies in the literature, most notably the AECL Underground Research Laboratory in Manitoba. One thing which these case studies typically ignore, however, is the influence of rock dilatancy on the evolution of brittle failure. Physically, this phenomenon is the volumetric expansion of the rock due to fracture opening; numerically, this phenomenon is captured by the flow rule, which is often characterized by the dilation angle, ?. Accurately modelling rock dilatancy in conjunction with strength evolution is necessary both to predict the magnitude and distribution of ground displacements, as well as the exact depth and shape of the fracturing zone. Both of these factors can have significant implications for support design. This paper is focussed on presenting some of the recent developments in this field in the context of a number of numerical modelling case studies. Initially, a new model for the dilatancy of brittle rock is presented, as well as some representative data and model parameters for different rock types. Next, several case studies of highly stressed tunnels and shafts are presented. The results of continuum numerical models are presented to demonstrate the ability of the back analyses to match observed in-situ measurements and obtained. The predictive capabilities of the material model are also highlighted for cases where sufficient “a priori” information (such as laboratory compression testing data) are available. The issues of model nonuniqueness and strain-localization/bifurcation are also addressed."

Among the known iron deposits in Canada, many are of low grade and require beneficiation to produce an acceptable blast-furnace feed. Some of the deposits have never been considered for commercial exploitation due to the lack of a suitable concentrating process. A number of deposits of this type are located in Northern Ontario. The problem in upgrading these deposits is three fold. Firstly, the iron occurs as a mixture of magnetite and hematite. Secondly, the grain size of the material can be fine to very fine. Thirdly, the complex mixture of gangue minerals, which consists invariably of silica, flaky silicates and carbonates, slimes excessively on fine grinding. Algoma's efforts to concentrate these iron-bearing materials culminated in the development of a "Selective Flocculation and Desliming Process" employing slimes removal as the sole beneficiation technique. The process was applied successfully in the laboratory using two stages of grinding and a total of seven deslimings. Prior to the removal of slimes, the iron-bearing fines were selectively flocculated from a thoroughly dispersed pulp using a modified starch as flocculant, Sodium silicate was employed as dispersant. An attempt was made to optimize some of the process variables using material from one specific iron formation near the town of Geraldton in Northern Ontario. The preparation of the starch proved most critical. This matter, and the method used to evaluate the degree of breakdown of the starch molecule, are therefore discussed in some detail.

Since closure in 1968, the Wedge Mine, situated adjacent to the Nepisiguit River in New Brunswick, has been flooding with acidic water containing toxic levels of heavy metals. Cominco Ltd. has undertaken a series of pollution control measures to mitigate the threat posed to the river quality. Included has been a successful treatment campaign in 1976 which discharged in excess of 30 million gallons of high-quality effluent from the accumulated volume of mine water. The sources of contamination have been identified as actively leaching waste dumps. A comprehensive program of permanent corrective measures has been prepared which will culminate in mine backfilling. Once completed, the unacceptable burden of water treatment in perpetuity at a non-producing property will be removed.

Introduction So many minerals and mineral products are used in the glass industry that it would require an unduly long paper to deal adequately with all of them. Only those that go to make up the batch for the more common types of glass will be discussed here, and even with these only, the list is a lengthy one. It is true that for the body of the glass comparatively few materials are required-as silica sand, soda-ash, lime, and feldspar. The others are used mainly to colour or decolorize the glass, or to give it some other desired characteristic, such as high lustre, greater physical strength, or opalescence; but, although they may be present in very small quantities, they are just as in-dispensable to the glass industry as are the main constituents of the batch. Sand Sand is essentially quartz, the dioxide of silicon, Si02. Most glass contains from 71J to 75 per cent silica. Sand for use in the glass industry, or 'glass sand', is obtained both from deposits of unconsolidated material, commonly referred to as 'sand', and from solid rock-sandstone, quartz, or quartzite. For the manufacture of glass, the material must possess a high degree of purity, as noted below, so that, although sand is widespread in most parts of the world, and sandstone, quartz, and quartzite are not at all uncommon, it is only in certain places that suitable deposits are found. At the present time, most of the glass sand used in Canada is imported from France, Belgium, and the United States. The French material, from Fontainebleau, near Paris, is known the world over as a very high quality glass sand. That from Belgium is nearly as good and is lower is price.

Plant process optimization programs are often costly, both in technical effort and loss of production. Evolutionary Operation or "EVOP" is a mode of plant operation consisting of controlled cyclical changes in process conditions by which information is provided concerning potential process improvements while both volume and quality uniformity in production are maintained. Its conceptual simplicity and low cost of utilization have led to successful adoption in a variety of industrial manufacturing operations. This paper is an expository account of basic EVOP theory, the problems encountered and the organization required in applying it to a processing plant. Illustrations are provided which indicate the payoff that can result.

The ASTM B108 Mould and a Modified Mould were used to cast test bars under a variety of conditions: mould and pouring temperatures, mould coating and tilt. Mechanical properties were determined in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions. The ASTM Mould is less sensitive to casting variables. Enlarging the gating system and adding additional gates to the ASTM mould can improve properties in the tilt position. The reproducibility of properties in as-cast and T6 heat treated bars was investigated.

"Introduction1N THE FALL of 1951, Peace River Allied Fort St. John No. 1 well was drilled in Lsd. 1, Section 9 Township 83, Range 18, West of the 6th Meridian, on the flats of the north side of Peace river, six miles southeast of the village of Fort St. John, B.C. During this operation, non-commercial shows gas in three zones and of oil in one zone were obtained during the drill-stem tests. Further geological study indicated that this well was on the southeastern edge of the Fort St. St. John structure.Pacific Fort St. John No. 4, drilled shortly afterwards, obtained possible commercial gas flows on drill-stem test in five zones and thus encouraged development of what has become Canada's largest multizone gas field.In general, the productive horizons in this area possess fair per-meabilities and high porosities, a combination which provides for high reserves and moderate productivities. Development to date has therefore stressed experimental techniques in drilling and completion practice to provide high deliverability wells.Data and information of a specific nature apply, in all cases, to the pools in the Fort St. John structure."
