"The object of the work described in this paper was to increase the understanding of the relation that capillary pressure of a rock, hydro-dynamics, and accumulation of oil in stratigraphie traps have to one an-other. The hydrodynamic oil-water tilt equation is derived by considering the two vector gradients involved: (1) buoyancy of oil in water and (2) hydraulic gradient.Recent theories show the necessity for oil to have a continuons phase in the reservoir rock in order to mi-grate; this fact applies to hydro-static as well as to hydrodynamic conditions. Hydrostatically, the displacement pressure of the rock deter-mines the amount of oil that can be trapped behind a permeability barrier. If the buoyancy of oil in water exceeds the displacement pressure, oil will migrate up-dip; an oil trap will be formed where displacement pressure is greater.In stratigraphie traps the pressure drop caused by moving water is positive when its direction is down-dip, helping accumulation; and it is negative when its direction is up-dip, forcing the oil into the tighter section of the reservoir. Theoretically, pro-vided we have data such as: (1) the displacement pressure of an up-dip permeability pinchout, (2) density difference between the oil and water in place, and (3) the direction and magnitude of the hydrodynamic gradient (if any), the possible extent of a stratigraphie oil accumulation down-dip can be predicted.To test the above theory sample cores from three wells in the Denver Basin were analyzed and the oil column that could be held under hydro-static conditions was calculated. After the hydrodynamic influence was considered, the results were compared with actual field data.The significant fact shown by this investigation is that the calculated oil column in one reservoir very closely approximates the actual extent of the oil column in a well. Also in accordance with the theory, the capillary pressure caused by the buoyancy of the oil column exceeded the measured displacement pressure on core samples from another productive field. For very tight shaly sand and questionable oil shows, the interpretation of data is very critical, as shown by experiments on core samples from a third field."

Calcium, magnesium, bromide and iodide extraction from formation waters for use as industrial minerals has occurred in several countries, but not yet in Canada. Potential commercial brine fields exist in th e Upper Devonian Beaverhill Lake Formation of so uthern Alberta, and the Middle Devonian Elk Point Subgroup of north-central Alberta, f rom which calcium, magnesium and bromide are potential products. Iodide contents in fo rmation waters f rom the Upper Cretaceous Belly River Formation and the Lower Cretaceous Viking and Bow Island fo rmations in central and southern Alberta are at the lower range limit of commercial iodide-bearing formation waters elsewhere in the world. Available information is insufficient 10 outline potentially commercial areas in Alberta, but such info rmation can be most easily obtained f rom test borings for shallow natural gas. Lithium is not now produced commercially f rom formation waters but its content should be monitored in view of f uture increased demand for this metal.

INTRODUCTION THE deleterious effect of stress raisers or notches on the resistance to fatigue of machine components, and other parts subjected to repeated dynamic loading, has been well known for many years. Most engineers in the mechanical field have, at one time or another, encountered a shaft which fractured due to a poor transition fillet, a holding-down bolt which failed due to insufficient tightening or inferior thread form, or a fitted member which broke through a combination of fretting corrosion and clamping stresses. All of these are examples of the damaging influence exerted by stress raisers in fatigue. Other common forms of stress raiser which have taken their toll of dynamic components are: keyways, oil holes, splines, quenching oil grinding cracks, tool marks, and sharp changes in section; some are the result of the design, others of poor execution of the design. It is our experience in the Mines Branch1 and I feel sure this will be corroborated by other fatigue investigators, that the majority of failures are due to incorrect design or faulty preparation of the part concerned, rather than to the use of inferior material. Quite frequently, it is true that the operating conditions necessitate the presence of a 'notch', but even in such cases methods are generally available by which its adverse effect on the life of the component can be reduced or annulled. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a few typical stress raisers, and to provide information on various processes for mitigating their effects in fatigue.

Mining in highly stressed ground conditions has been an increasing challenge at the Brunswick Mine. Two large regional pillars were established on the 1000 m Level to support the ground for safe extraction of the surrounding ore. The South Regional Pillar contains about 5 million tonnes of ore and the North Regional Pillar has about 3 million tonnes of ore. In the fall of 2000, mining activities were suspended following a series of ground movements around the South Regional Pillar along weak geological structures. After extensive geotechnical investigations, a decision was made to carry out a mass destress blast in the West Ore Zone (WOZ) to cut the principal stress across an area of 135 m along strike and 86 m high. At the end of July 2001, the WOZ mass blast was successfully initiated. Following this success the mine decided to take a similar approach to destressing the North Regional Pillar (NRP). The final mass blast was taken in early February 2003. Advanced blasting technologies, including state of the art electronic detonators and blast simulation, played an important role in achieving the successful blasts. The high precision of delay timing and long delay duration of the electronic detonators ensured accurate and reliable initiations of over 800 blastholes in the WOZ mass blast. Orica?s DMC_Blast (Distinct Motion Code) simulation code was used to study different blasting blocks for the desired timing in the initiation sequence. This paper describes the process of applying electronic detonators in complex blasts, and discusses how blast simulation results were interpreted to guide engineering design of the mass blasts.

The preparation of high-purity zirconyl compounds was studied in order to develop an economical process for obtaining pure zirconium via the caustic fritting of zircon sand. The direct dissolution of caustic frits with concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid at 80c. followed by the addition of a small amount of acidified gelatin, gave high-purity zirconyl chloride or nitrate. The addition of a small amount of gelatin caused a mutual flocculation between colloidal silica and gelatin. The precipitation of this silica floc markedly lowered the content of silica in the product. The silica content of the compounds (or solution) so produced, generally less than 100 ppm., was sufficiently low for tributyl phosphate extraction for nitrate solutions. It was found that the degree of purification de-pends not only on the procedures employed but also on the nature of the frit itself. Silica was more effectively eliminated from the fritted product produced at higher temperatures, and less silica was present in the com-pound prepared from the frit produced in a shorter heating time. The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum porphyry mine, majority owned and operated by Freeport- McMoRan Copper & Gold, is located 30 km southwest of Arequipa Peru. The concentrator, which produces copper and molybdenum concentrates, started operating in late 2006 with a 108,000 tpd design capacity, processing primary sulfide ore (mainly chalcopyrite and molybdenite). Plant capacity was recently increased to 120,000 tpd. The comminution circuit consists of one 60? x 113" primary crusher, four MP-1000 secondary crushers in closed circuit with dry screens, four 2.4m x 1.6m High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) in closed circuit with wet screens, and four 7.3m x 11m gearless ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones. The HPGR circuit is fed by the Secondary Crushing circuit product at a T80 of 35 millimeters, and the HPGR circuit product feeds the Ball Mill circuit at a T80 of 3000 microns. This paper describes operating experiences with HPGRs during these first four years highlighting improvements in operating practices and presentation of data regarding operational efficiencies, also discussed are the primary benefits provided by HPGRs such as production of micro fractured particles, reduced ore Bond Work Index, and reduced power consumption. Cerro Verde represents the first installation of HPGRs in both the copper industry and large scale hard rock mining.

There is an increasing trend between increasing consumption of water and the production of metal concentrate. Along with this trend we see that ore grades are declining and getting more complex to concentrate around the world. This will not only complicate processing but also generate new requirements for the management of water and waste streams on mining sites. The mining industry is a large user of water and its water consumption is growing rapidly. The processing of lower quality ores requires greater volumes of water. For these reasons, the need for efficient use of water and water management at mine sites is becoming more urgent. The perception of water in the mining industry has changed from thinking about it only in terms of "water treatment" to actually seeing it as a valuable resource, a resource that needs proper management. This resource management needs to involve various aspects, such as optimizing water usage of the entire mine or concentrator site, minimizing fresh water usage, minimizing or eliminating waste generated in water treatment and implementing practices for water reuse and water recycling. This paper presents trends and new developments relating to waste and water management in the mining industry.

"A 10-cm thick clay-rich layer near the top of the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group is unusual in its breccia texture, alteration, and detrital mineral composition relative to the adjacent overlying and underlying sedimentary beds. This layer is composed of angular quartz grains set in an illite >> kaolinite + dickite matrix. Deformed clay-rich fragments within the layer have very similar mineral assemblages. The presence of euhedral accessory minerals including Ti-oxides and aluminophosphatesulphate minerals points to a diagenetic/hydrothermal origin. The presence of individual grains of Kfeldspar and amphibole is unusual relative to the typical Athabasca quartz arenite; originally, these minerals were probably included in detrital quartz and subsequently liberated during fracturing. The textures and alteration characteristics suggest that this layer is a hydraulically-fractured unit, which has experienced hydrothermal fluid alteration - a possible pathway distally related to uranium mineralization Une couche argileuse de 10 cm d’epaisseur pres du sommet de la Formation de Manitou Falls du Groupe d'Athabasca est remarquable par sa texture brechique, son alteration et la composition de ses mineraux detritiques qui different de ceux des couches sedimentaires sus- et sous-jacente. Cette couche est composee de grains de quartz angulaires dans une matrice composee d’illite >> kaolinite + dickite. Des fragments deformes riches en argile dans cette couche presentent des assemblages mineraux tres similaires. La presence de mineraux accessoires idiomorphes dont des oxydes de titane et des aluminophosphates-sulphates suggere que ces derniers ont une origine diagenetique / hydrothermale. La presence de grains de feldspath-K et d'amphibole est inhabituelle comparativement aux arenites quartziques typiques de l’Athabasca; initialement, ces mineraux constituaient probablement des inclusions dans le quartz detritique qui ont ete subsequemment liberees pendant la fracturation. Les textures et les caracteristiques de l'alteration suggerent que cette unite a subi une fracturation hydraulique et a ete alteree par un fluide hydrothermal - possiblement en lien avec les effets distaux de mise en place de la mineralisation en l'uranium."

"Refractory sulfidic ores consist of materials in which gold occurs finely disseminated within metallic sulfides or forming solid solutions, with pyrite and arsenopyrite being the two sulfides most commonly associated with gold. Typical cyanide operations show poor performance and require oxidative pretreatments to increase gold recovery. Pretreatment alternatives include roasting, pre-aeration, acidic and alkaline high pressure oxidation, and bacterial oxidation. The presence of arsenic, however, introduces a serious disadvantage to the use of roasting and bacterial leaching, while high pressure oxidation involves high capital costs. This work focuses on evaluating the effect of the addition of a carbon resin as a sulfur collector on the oxidation of different arsenopyrite concentrates under atmospheric tank leaching (ATL) conditions. The addition of the resin improved the oxidation of sulfides and favored the formation of elemental sulfur over the generation of sulfate. However, this type of technology has been focused mainly on the recovery of copper from copper concentrates containing chalcopyrite with less attention paid to other sulfides."

CORROSION of metals, for the purpose of this talk, may be divided into two general classes, namely, atmospheric and chemical. Atmospheric corrosion is caused by the natural agents -water, air, salt, and temperature -as well as by the agents arising from industrial operations which pollute the atmosphere. Chemical corrosion affects metals in refineries and chemical plants where severe conditions exist due to .acids, alkalies, salts, solvents, gases, ?steam, etc. A special condition is encountered on road equipment and motor vehicles due to the large amounts of corrosive salts which are used on our roads in the winter. Exposure to corrosive conditions such as those referred to above causes metal to be destroyed and, therefore, it has to be protected. The non-metallic or organic coatings used to protect the metal are themselves destroyed ultimately by these same conditions. Since all types of organic coatings do not have the same kind and degree of resistance to degradation, a particular kind of -coating must be used for a particular set of conditions in order to obtain the maximum benefit. In ?addition to the above mentioned agents, organic coatings are degraded ?by sun-light, which is probably the severest single factor in the breakdown of organic coatings exposed outdoors. We can divide organic coatings, in a general way, into the following classes: (1) Conventional coatings, and (2) Special coatings.

Magnesium alloy, being the lightest structural material, is a key candidate for the weight reduction of vehicles in automotive and aerospace industries; however, its poor corrosion resistance and difficulty in deformation are limiting factors. Recently, Al/Mg/Al tri-layered clad sheets have been considered as a promising alternative to improve corrosion resistance and formability of magnesium alloys. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tensile properties and deformation behavior of Al/Mg/Al tri-layer clad sheets at different temperatures and strain rates. Yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation were observed to increase with increasing strain rate. With increasing temperature from -40°C to 180°C, YS and UTS decreased and ductility increased. The strain hardening exponent evaluated via three equations of Hollomon, Swift, and Afrin et al. showed a similar increase with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature. The fractographic analysis showed partial debonding of clad interface especially at higher strain rates and lower temperatures.

Conventional project valuation techniques, such as discounted cash flow (DCF) method, are more frequently being criticised for the manner in which they consider the interacting effects of uncertainty and project structure (including management flexibility) on project value. Modern asset pricing (MAP; often called ?real options valuation? when applied to the analysis of flexibility) is a more general valuation framework that corrects many of the shortcomings of common valuation methods. Previous mining applications of MAP have tended to treat the ore deposit as a homogenous entity. While useful for demonstration purposes, this is inadequate for practical application in industry. This paper presents a MAP valuation example that allows for the heterogeneous nature of an ore deposit. It shows that deposit structure may increase the complexity of the mine planner?s decision so that results of a standard DCF analysis, or a simple MAP analysis that ignores the details of deposit structure, are misleading. In the example, a management is considering the development of an adjacent low-grade zone while mining operations in a high-grade zone are ongoing. If the low-grade zone is developed before high-grade reserves are exhausted, the proposed development will include both low-grade zone development and a capacity expansion to handle additional low-grade reserve production. If development of these reserves is delayed until the high-grade reserves are depleted, then the low-grade reserves can be developed without a capacity expansion. A typical DCF analysis would reduce the management?s decision problem to three alternatives: 1) continue mining only in the highgrade reserves, 2) immediately develop the low-grade reserves and expand capacity, and 3) delay low-grade zone development until the high-grade reserves are exhausted. The model presented here allows the management to reconsider the development and capacity expansion decision on a discrete half-year basis. It delineates price regions, for given levels of high-grade zone reserves, in which it is optimal to develop the low-grade zone, defer low-grade zone development and abandon the mine irrevocably. The model presented here extends the ability of mine planners to describe actual project structure while using the MAP valuation framework that is already noted for its capacity to combine project uncertainty and risk insights with a dynamic project description.

Process water from production of concentrates in Meydook copper sulfide mine is transferred to the 8.3 million m3 tailings dam and a water retention pond after initial thickening. Elevated concentrations of heavy metals, sulfate, and TDS and decrease in pH as well as seepage into the aquifers have been the concern of the regulatory agencies since the start of activities. In this paper the results of a 6-month monitoring program from 4 wells are presented. The wells were located approximately 1.5 km from downstream of tailing dam (0.4 km from water retention pond) as well as upstream background well (2.28 km from water retention pond and 1.27 km from tailings dam). The objective was to study possible effect of accumulated tailings on the groundwater resources. Water levels in sampled wells were on average between 20 and 40 m. Results showed high levels of lead (5 ppb), copper (0.17-0.46 ppm) and selenium (73.1- 29.1 ppb). High levels of selenium and lead were partly due to natural geological settings of the area with high levels present in unaffected soils in the vicinity including water wells of villages upstream of mining operations. High copper levels were attributed to both mining operations as well as deposition from particulate air deposition onto the soil and transport to ground water by rain.

Using constructed wetlands to chemically reduce hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) to Cr(III) from industrial and mining wastewater has proven to be feasible and efficient. Applying first-order kinetics to describe the process is simple, but in some cases a more accurate model is required to reflect the process. This paper studies the feasibility of using non–first-order kinetics to describe the reduction process. Results indicate that half- and second-order kinetics adequately described Cr(VI) reduction in laboratory wetland mesocosms. The organic carbon content played a relevant role, whether it was built up by plant growth or spiked into the feed water.

In the present study the effect of using different grinding media, viz, ceramic balls, forged steel balls, 15% Cr steel balls, stainless steel and mixture of stainless steel and 15% Cr steel balls (50:50) on the flotation performance of a Platinum Group Mineral (PGM) UG2 ore was investigated. Test work was conducted using a laboratory scale horizontal tumbling mill and a batch flotation cell. Power draw to achieve a specific P80 was determined for each media type. Changes in flotation behaviour were evaluated in terms of particle size distribution, water recovery, solid recovery and valuable mineral recovery. pH, Eh and DO levels were also measured. Grinding products of five different media produced similar solids and water recovery, which is indicative of the froth characteristics, but the grades and recoveries of PGE and chromite were different. The product obtained when using ceramic media showed the best flotation performance, producing the highest PGE recovery and the lowest Cr2O3 recovery. The products obtained when using stainless steel balls (SS) produced the lowest PGE recovery and highest Cr2O3 grade and recovery. The paper proposes possible reasons to explain these observations which may have significant importance for the operation of a PGM concentrator.

"AbstractA number of plant-scale cyanidation tests were carried out in an attempt to uncover the causes of fluctuations in gold recovery efficiency. Computer analysis of the results verified that the treatment of reclaimed waste rock material along with normal run-of-mine ore was having an adverse effect on metallurgical efficiency. Mineralogical examinations showed that the free gold particles in the dump material were heavily tarnished or coated (predominantly by hydrated iron oxide), accounting for the lower recoveries. The indications were that the effect could be counteracted somewhat by using higher than normal cyanide and lime reagent concentrations and adequate leaching times. Analysis of the results showed further that leach pulp density was an important operating parameter affecting extraction efficiency. A variable activation energy leaching model provided an extremely good characterization of individual batch leach runs.IntroductionFLUCTUATING METALLURGICAL EFFICIENCY at the gold concentrator of the S.A. Diametrically faced borehole breakout observations are a fairly good indication of magnitude of the secondary stresses acting perpendicular to the borehole. In cases of low in situ stresses, where borehole breakouts are not observed naturally, it is possible to increase the prevailing stress state around the borehole by increasing the rock temperature. When the temperature is increased sufficiently, thermally induced borehole breakouts will occur. By implementing the temperature increase in boreholes located at excavated tunnels, it is also possible to study the effect of the near-field stresses caused by the excavation. The near-field stress state changes as a function of borehole depth, thus increasing the information available from experiment. To study the feasibility of this proposed low cost method, a Borehole Thermal Spalling (BTS) experiment was executed in ONKALO Underground Rock Characterization Facility, in Western Finland in 2014. The first borehole pilot test with the method was conducted in ONKALO at the POSE niche in already at May 2010, with the second pilot test following in August 2010 at Äspö HRL. The major objective of the experiments was to define the trend of the maximum in situ stress component, while also providing knowledge of the in situ spalling strength of the ONKALO rock mass. The stress state in ONKALO is nearly isotropic in horizontal layer, causing problems for the use of more traditional stress measurement methods. With boreholes heated over long interval, the weakest rock parts are observed to fail, thus providing statistical confidence. For these reasons, continuous test sections have an advantage in ONKALO, compared to spatially limited stress measurement methods such as overcoring and hydraulic fracturing. The BTS experiment is conducted in 9 meter deep vertical boreholes located at the POSE niche, situated -345 m depth below the ground surface. The boreholes used within the BTS experiment are located in migmatitic granite, in an experiment area where the surrounding stress state and the rock strength are fairly well known. The prior knowledge of the stresses is favourable for the experiment, as it requires careful planning and iterations to determine the appropriate heating power domain. Too low heating power will not be sufficient to cause borehole breakout, while too high heating power causes breakout in all directions thus making determination of stress direction hard or impossible. The initial state of the borehole and induced borehole breakouts will be monitored using acoustic televiewer logging (ABI) and optical borehole logging (OBI) imaging techniques. Fracture mechanics modelling is used in planning of the experiment, also in back-analysis to link the observed breakout angle to stress state. Both the pilot test in 2010 and BTS test in 2014 resulted in similar borehole breakout direction. The results are in line with so called EDZ & VT1 stress interpretation, revealed the maximum horizontal component bearing the magnitude of 21.5 MPa, with the trend of 166°.

Gold occurrences have been known in the La Ronge Domain for many year . Mineable reserves have more recently been outlined and there is every prospect of a major gold camp being established in the domain within this decade. The La Ronge Domain lies in the Lower Proterozoic 'Trans-Hudson Orogen' and is part of a collage of Early Proterozoic crust comprising volcanoplutonic arcs, batholiths, associated volcaniclastics and volcanogenic sediments lying between the Superior Craton to the outheast and the reworked Archean basement/Aphebian cover terrain to the northwest. The domain has several lithostructural subdivisions, the most important of whjch , from a gold exploration point of view, is the Central Metavolcanic Belt. This belt is composed dominantly of a range of metavolcanic rocks and gabbroic to granitic intrusives, which geochemically resemble younger subduction-generated 'primitive' arcs developed on oceanic crust. U-Pb zircon geochronology indicates that the arc volcarusm and pre- to late-kjnematic plutonism occurred about 1890 Ma to 1850 Ma ago. The belt has an attained grade of upper greenschist to amphibolite facies and is relatively undeformed , though high strain zones occur locally. Most gold occurrences in the La Ronge Domain have been found in the Star-Waddy Lakes area of the Central Metavolcanic Belt, and in the Sulprude-MacKay Lakes area to the south which is interpreted as a tectonically dismembered part of the main belt. Both tratiformand vein-type gold occurrences are present in the domain; vein-type predominate and form nearly 90 per cent of the occurrences. The stratiform-type occurrences show a regional lithological a sociation with iron-rich sediments within proximal felsic volcanjc sequences. Some vein-type occurrences appear related to brittle fracturing associated with intrusive emplacement (the magmatic-hydrothermal "syn:' and "subvolcanic" veins) and faulting. However, most of the vein-type occurrences exhibit a spatial association with regionalscale ductile shear and other high strain zones, and were probably formed by metamorphichydrothermal processes.

"As sulfide zinc ore deposits become exhausted, nonsulfide zinc ore deposits become the other resource for zinc production. However, flotation for zinc recovery from nonsulfide deposits is much more difficult than the flotation of sphalerite from sulfide deposits and may become an option for zinc production only if a suitable processing technology is developed. In this regard, research efforts are being devoted to the flotation of nonsulfide zinc oxide minerals. Some common methods which have been used for the flotation of zinc oxide minerals include sulfidization-flotation, activation, and direct flotation with anionic and cationic collectors. The traditional flotation techniques have low efficiency and difficulty in separation and recovery of the zinc minerals from gangue minerals, for example, smithsonite (ZnCO3) from other carbonate gangue minerals and hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2·H2O) from silicate gangue minerals. In this study potassium lauryl phosphate was evaluated as a collector for the flotation of nonsulfide zinc minerals. Results from contact angle and microflotation experiments at pH 6–9 show that hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2·H2O) can be floated from quartz and that smithsonite (ZnCO3) can be floated from calcite. However, when dodecylamine, which is a common collector reported in literature for the flotation of nonsulfide zinc minerals, was used as collector, no significant difference between nonsulfide zinc minerals and gangue minerals was observed at any pH value. Initial evaluation suggests that potassium lauryl phosphate is effective at low concentration and may be a promising collector for zinc oxide mineral flotation.INTRODUCTIONBefore the twentieth century, zinc was mainly produced from nonsulfide ores (Large, 2001; Gilg, Boni, & Cook, 2008). With the development of differential flotation processes in the late 19th century major production switched from nonsulfide zinc sources to sulfide zinc ores (Hitzman, Reynolds, Sangster, Allen, & Carman, 2003; Gilg et al., 2008). However, as it is becoming more difficult to find new sulfide ores, recovery from nonsulfide deposits is being considered. Nonsulfide flotation for zinc recovery is much more difficult than the flotation recovery of sphalerite from sulfide deposits and may become an option for zinc production if a suitable technology is developed. Zinc and lead oxide ores are difficult to beneficiate ores due to their similar floatability with gangue, high solubility in water, and the influence of slimes (Fa, Miller, Tao, & Li, 2005). In order to improve the performance of oxidized minerals, lots of effort is being devoted to this field of study (Ejtemaei & Mahdi, 2014)."
