"AbstractIn the separation of lead and zinc concentrates from the ore from Cominco's Sullivan mine at Kimberley, • B.C., an iron sulphide concentrate is also produced, some of which is roasted to provide sulphuric add for the manufacture of phosphate fertilizer. The iron oxide calcine from the roaster is potentially a valuable raw material for the production of pig iron and steel. To evaluate this material, six tons of .pig iron was produced from it in an experimental 75 k.w. electric furnace at Trail. The pig iron alone, and also in varying proportions with structural steel scrap and commercial pig iron, was used in the production of basic electric furnace steel at the Mines Branch Laboratories, Ottawa. Details are given of the steel making and fabrication procedure, of the visual and microscopic examination, and of the extensive series of tests on the steel produced. "AbstractThe paper identifies the major components of price change which affect the determination of the internal rate of return of a mining project. It illustrates several price indexes which may be used to measure general price increases, identifying techniques which might incorporate them into mine valuation procedures. The ""hurdle rate"" for new investment is discussed.IntroductionDECISIONS regarding the value of an orebody and whether or when to mine an orebody are based on an estimate of the cash flows which would be associated with its exploitation. These pro-forma cash flows represent cash in or out of a possible mineable deposit and include exploration and construction costs, sales revenues, operating expenses, taxes, debt borrowings, interest and debt repayment. It has long been recognized that when combining the cash flows occurring over the life of the mine, dollars received or paid out early have greater value than those received or paid out later. This time value of money has been incorporated into mine evaluation calculations through the use of present-value or discounting techniques. Another factor affecting mine valuation, inflation, is not accounted for by valuation techniques now in use. In recent years, price changes have become more volatile. In the past, price change could easily be ignored when evaluating potential mines. Today, the combination of larger investments and greater price volatility leads to great concern about the effects of price change on mine valuation."

Present study interest by aluminium alloy (Al 7175-T5173) drilled without cooling fluid. The influence of the machining parameters (spindle speed and feed rate) on the holes quality was analyzed. Drilling tools are made of carbide (WC); high speed steel (HSS) and TiN coated carbide (WC-Ti).The Experiment design was reinforced by the application of statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA).The results show that the thrust force is influenced principally by the spindle speed and feed rate. Though, both feed rate and tool materials have statistical significance on the surface roughness. In addition, the objective of correlations between spindle speed and feed rate with the evolution of the machining parameters was established. These correlations were obtained by quadratic regression using the response surface methodology. Finally, useful to select optimum values of drilling parameters, that would minimize thrust force, torque, cutting temperature and surface roughness.

"Abstract- The mineralogy of samples from the Wellgreen Cu-Ni-Pt-Pd deposit, Yukon Territory, is complex and the metals of interest are contained within fme-grained minerais which vary in size and mineral associations from sample to sample.The major Ni carriers are pentlandite and violarite; the major Cu carrier is chalcopyrite. About 700Jo of the major Ni carriers and 78% of the major Cu qmier will be liberated at a grind of 80% -'}f,.7 J.Uil (-500 mesh) for typical low-grade gabbro (West zone, sample No. 1). For typical ""clinopyroxenite"" (West zone, sample No. 2) and typical ""clinopyroxene-rich peridotite"" (East zone, sample No. 3) the liberation would be 71""lo and 65% for Ni, 74% and 60% for Cu, respectively. Fine grinding, however, cannot liberate the Ni contained in silicates and pyrrhotite, estimated to total24.5% for typicallow-grade gabbro (West zone, sample No. 1), 15% for typical ""clinopyroxenite"" (West zone, sample No. 2), and 12% for typical ""clinopyroxene-rich peridotite"" (East zone, sample No. 3).The principal Pt carrier (sperrylite) varies considerably in grain-size between samples and fme grinding, required to liberate the major Ni and Cu carriers, may be counterproductive in samples where sperrylite is relatively coarse-grained, as sorne would then be unrecovered (e.g. sample No. 1). In addition, sperrylite in samples No. 2 and No. 3 is closely associated with magnetite.Palladium occurs in diverse ways. It occurs in the form of several Pd minerais (e.g. sudburyite, testibiopalladite, merenskyite), as a replacement for Ni in several tellurides, antimonides and tel­ lurantimonides (e.g. melonite), or as very low concentrations in pentlandite (up to 34 ppm), chal­ copyrite (up to 9 ppm), and pyrrhotite (up to 5.6 ppm). Palladium minerais and Pd-bearing minerals are strongly associated with chalcopyrite in sample No. 1 and will thus report to a Cu concentrate. However, 22% of the total Pd is in solid solution in pentlandite in this sample and will thus report to the Ni concentrate. In samples No. 2 and No. 3, less Pd occurs in solid solution in pentlandite, and the PGM are distributed mainly among pentlandite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite in sample No. 2, and among pentlandite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite in sample No. 3. Therefore, the feasibility of magnetic concentration should be investigated for samples like No. 2 and No. 3, in order to improve Pt and Pd recoveries.Rhodium was found to occur as rare hollingworthite, in sparse cobaltite (up to 2.7%) and, as low concentrations in chalcopyrite (to 10 ppm) and pentlandite (to 12 ppm) by proton microprobe. Iridium occurs in hollingworthite (up to 7.8%) and very rarely as the native metal or in an undefmed Re-Ir-Os-Ru alloy. Ruthenium was determined by proton microprobe analyses to occur in pentlandite (up to 13 ppm) and chalcopyrite (up to 10 ppm), in addition to rare laurite and Re alloy."

"Aerospace Al-Zn-Mg-Cu (7xxx) alloys are known to be susceptible to environmentally assisted cracking (EAC). This phenomenon has been studied intensively for many decades, leading to empirically adopted methods to mitigate this problem through overaging and composition design. In parallel, many theories have been developed to explain EAC in 7xxx, but none is yet universally accepted. Today, a number of emerging techniques offer potential to shed new light on EAC in 7xxx. The purpose of the present paper is to demonstrate how X-ray tomography (XCT) combined with electron microscopy can be used to identify the true crack path in 3-dimensions, and hence identify material for site specific electron microscopy analysis. Composition mapping over large areas to high accuracy has been performed using a modern electron microprobe analysis system. This has been combined with transmission electron microscopy to investigate local composition in matrix and precipitates at high resolution. This combination of techniques across length scales offers the potential to provide new insights into the links between local composition, microstructure, and EAC resistance.INTRODUCTION Environmentally-assisted cracking (EAC) is a phenomenon which dramatically decreases the performance of metals and can cause premature failure of large structures. Observed in situations where components were not subjected to critical loads and no widespread corrosion was involved, this type of brittle failure is extremely difficult to predict. The EAC designation covers a number of phenomena, e.g. stress corrosion cracking (SCC), hydrogen embrittlement (HE), corrosion fatigue (CF), etc. Initially identified in steels, EAC can also affect other metals such as high-performance aerospace aluminium alloys, and this phenomenon has been a concern for industries for decades. Extensive research has been conducted on the effects of various environments (moist air, saline water, dry hydrogen gas, etc.) on microstructures and crack propagation, however no consensus has been reached and the exact nature of the mechanisms that control EAC is still being debated (Birnbaum & Sofronis, 1994; Gangloff, 2007; Holroyd & Scamans, 2013; Lynch, 2012; Oriani, 1972; Scamans, Alani & Swann, 1976, Young & Scully, 2002)."

"Documented underground fill failures have resulted because of the lack of adequate knowledge concerning fill strength and other physical parameters, as well as to a lack of consistent quality of fill materials being used by operators. On the basis of literature review and correspondence with backfill operators at 18 mines throughout the province of Ontario, non-systematic quality control procedures have been shown to exist, both within different levels of single operations and between separate mining operations, which act to provide inferior engineered fill materials and erratic application response in situ.Assessment of existing procedures set by mine operators for determining backfill physical parameters, and recommendation of optimum fill material testing and manufacturing guidelines are presented in this paper.A series of standard fill characterization test procedures are recommended to provide substantial, though not comprehensive, fill behaviour review. The purpose of these recommendations is to propose industry standards for backfill quality review. Data acquired could be utilized for fill design functions and as a means of comparing fill quality parameters between sites in a regular and more systematic fashion than is presently done."

This paper reports on an energy efficiency analysis completed as part of a research project looking at energy reduction opportunities in minerals processing operations. The plant discussed is a gold production facility owned by Newmont Gold in the Tanami region of central Australia. Due to its remote location, lack of nearby gas pipeline or power grid, the operation has been completely dependent on diesel fuel for its electricity generation and transport needs. The mine and processing plant use electrical power at a rate of 12MW to 18MW, resulting in a monthly electricity cost of over US$1.5M. The high cost of diesel combined with an impending power generation capacity shortage drove Newmont to undertake the energy efficiency study. An energy audit of the plant showed opportunities for significant energy savings through the strategic use of waste heat, fuel replacement alternatives and renewable energy sources.

Canada, with one of the largest continental shelf areas in the world, has done little to evaluate its offshore unconsolidated mineral resources which include heavy minerals (gold, chromite, rutile etc.) and industrial minerals (silica sand and aggregates). During glaciation much of the continental shelf was covered with an ice sheet and later subaerially exposed with the result that glacial, glaciomarine and fluvial processes deposited sediments that may contain heavy minerals derived from onland locations. With rising sea-levels, beach and nearshore processes may have served to concentrate heavy minerals by winnowing and removing the lighter mineral components. These potentially valuable resources can be found with suitable exploration techniques such as seismic profiling and bottom sampling. Gold deposits are known to exist off the coast of Nova Scotia, and on the basis of form er beach mining, gold deposits probably occur off Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands. Large deposits of silica sand occur near the Madeleine Islands and it appears likely that supplies of marine aggregates are present close to urban markets or sites of future mega-projects such as oil field developments. This paper, which is based upon a review of literature and consultation with members of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources' Coordinating Committee on Ocean Mining (DCOM), is the first step in assessing the Canadian offshore f or its resource potential with respect to quantified deposits, known and speculative mineral occurrences. Although this is a subjective evaluation, the potential appears promising. A more detailed resource inventory is required to provide a more certain assessment.

THIS paper presents evidence that in 3 1/2% nickel steel, the published temperature for the Ac1 transformation, l,275°F., represents the completion of that transformation, and that its inception occurs approximately 275°F. lower, at about l,000°F. The formation of austenite within this range, especially at the higher temperatures, and its subsequent decomposition to martensite, results in considerable impairment of the properties of the steel. That the solid solution found to occur below l,275°F. is austenite has been questioned, but the evidence herewith presented, while not decisive, appears to be reasonably convincing. INTRODUCTION The February, 1939, issue of Metals Technology contains a very interesting paper by I. N. Zavarine, Associate Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In that paper, Professor Zavarine presented photomicrographs illustrative of the microstructures produced by heating nickel steels to a temperature slightly below the carbon change point, and holding them at that temperature for various lengths of time. His illustrations show that the structures found after such treatment do not consist merely of ferrite and carbides, but are characterized by the presence of a third phase, which he describes as a' 'sub-critical solid solution'. The occurrence of this third phase in increasing amounts is accompanied by an increase in strength and a loss of ductility and impairment of elastic ratio of the steel. Some years ago, one of the authors encountered the above-mentioned phenomenon in treating large forgings of 3.5% nickel steel. After normalizing and then drawing at l,250°F., very poor mechanical properties were obtained. Investigation of the steel disclosed no inferiority in quality. Eventually, after considerable waste of time and money, a draw temperature of l,150°F. was tried. This treatment resulted in a very great increase in elastic ratio, over 5 per cent increase in percentage elongation, and proportionate improvement in reduction of area.

THE PURPOSE of this paper is to indicate the working capacity of different types of ropes for various engineering and mining duties. ROPE CONSTRUCTIONS There are approximately one hundred different designs of ropes in use today but, normally, only about ten are necessary for mining and engineering duties. The rest are designed for unusual equipments, or are different ways of combining wires of special shapes. Basically, the various designs of mining ropes consist of round, triangular, and oval strands, constructed with one or several layers of wire over a single wire, or a compound construction of sever.al wires. To suit different installations ropes are made with 3, 4, 5, or more of these types of strands over a central core, the ?co re itself being manufactured from either a fibrous material or a combination of steel wires. Nevertheless, in mining, the demand for 'locked coil rope', wl1ich may be considered as a single strand, is steadily increasing, especially for use on vertical shaft winding engines. So far as the locked coil rope is concerned, many constructions have been developed to suit different requirements, such as - in addition to winding ropes - aerial carrying Topes, shaft guide ropes and haulage ropes.

"Pressure oxidation (POX) is one of the most common and reliable methods of processing gold-bearing sulfide concentrates. However, when processing concentrates that contain natural carbonaceous matter, substantial gold losses occur due to autoclave preg-robbing. The latter involves formation of gold chloride complexes under typical POX conditions (high temperatures, high acidity and high ORP) and subsequent sorption of these complexes by carbonaceous matter. Naturally, chloride ion plays a significant role in the process of autoclave preg-robbing; its concentration in POX solution has a well-marked effect on subsequent gold recovery during cyanidation of POX residue. The previous research done by SRC Hydrometallurgy showed that autoclave preg-robbing of gold could be significantly inhibited by the addition of mercury(II) compounds to POX slurry. The positive effect of mercury(II) was well pronounced both at high (>20 mg/L) and low (<5 mg/L) Cl concentrations in POX solution. The successful bench-scale laboratory testing was followed by pilot plant trials at Ore Test Facility in Blagoveshchensk, Russia. The present paper provides the results of these trials. The bench-scale testing results were verified; the optimum oxidizing parameters and reagent dosage were specified. The behavior of mercury (II) at POX pilot plant was found to be in good consistency with industrial practice described in the literature.INTRODUCTION Pressure oxidation (POX) is one of the most common, reliable, and commercially proven methods of processing gold-bearing sulfide ores and concentrates. However, when processing double refractory materials that contain natural carbonaceous matter, POX technology advantages are compromised by autoclave preg-robbing of gold. The latter occurs when natural organic carbon and soluble halides are both present in autoclave feed. Strongly oxidizing conditions of POX (high temperature, oxidation-reduction potential or ORP, and acidity) favor formation of gold-halide (mostly, gold-chloride) complexes, which tend to bond with carbonaceous matter. The exact nature and mechanism of this bonding is unknown, but as the result of this, cyanide is unable to leach gold from POX residue and the precious metal is lost to the tails (Axenov et al., 2014; Dimov, Chryssoulis, & Sodhi, 2003; Fomenko, Zaytsev, Pleshkov, Chugaev, & Shneerson, 2013)."

A thermo-chemical model of the Peirce-Smith copper converter in blowing the copper stage has been developed to predict the molten temperature. The key assumption of the model was that white metal and gas phases in the converter were in thermal and chemical equilibrium. In this model, the chemical reaction of white metal and oxygen was accomplished completely. So long as sulfur existed in the bath, the generation of Cu2O was frozen. The reaction rate was considered to be constant and controlled by the reacted sulfur. The converter temperature was calculated by heat balances over time. The model was validated by a detailed comparison with measured industrial data. A good agreement was obtained. The converter temperature depended on process parameters such as oxygen efficiency, molten emissivity and oxygen enrichment.

"Limestone-bearing strata are exposed in seven areas of Alberta, each situated adjacent to rail and road facilities. Six of these centers are located along the eastern edge of the Foothills and Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains in western Alberta. The other is in northeastern Alberta, along the eastern margin of the Alberta Basin. High-grade limestones are present in Middle Cambrian, Upper Devonian and Mississippian strata. Middle Cambrian (Eldon Formation) limestones have been exploited only in the Exshaw area west of Calgary, where they formerly were used for lime production. Limestone beds of the Upper Devonian Palliser Formation are exploited at Exshaw and at Cadomin in west-central Alberta for the manufacture of cement. Reserves of high-grade limestone also are available in the Palliser Formation near Crowsnest Lake in southwestern Alberta and near BrUle, west of Edmonton. Upper Devonian limestones of the Waterways Formation are widespread in the Fort McMurray area of northeastern Alberta, but available data indicate they are of inferior quality to the limestone deposits of the Rocky Mountains regions. The Mississippian Livingstone Formation contains large reserves of high-grade limestone at several localities in the Rocky Mountains and Foothills. Commercial development of the unit is now underway at Crowsnest Lake and at Exshaw for lime production, and future exploitation of these beds is feasible at Blairmore and Nordegg."

Principles for the drainage of gas contaminants are shown, and the contamination control problems created by differential pressures in complicated booster fan installations are discussed. The paper also deals with the use of advanced mathematics for solving some of the ventilation problems likely to be encountered.

"Lundin Mining’s Eagle Operation, located in Marquette County, northern Michigan consists of a mine and concentrator that processes a Ni-Cu-(PGE) ore. Mine production began in 2014 and is expected to achieve production of approximately 23,000 tonnes of Ni and 20,000 tonnes of Cu per year. The ore is trucked to the Humboldt Mill, where both a Ni and Cu concentrate is produced.XPS Consulting & Testwork Services (XPS) has assisted the team at Eagle since 2013. Prior to start up, the ore was piloted at the XPS lab in Sudbury, Ontario to demonstrate the concentrator flowsheet and establish flotation operating strategy. XPS consulting metallurgists worked closely with the Eagle team during the commissioning of the plant providing troubleshooting, sampling, metal balancing expertise and support. Finally, a series of monthly composites over a 6 month period was submitted for mineralogical characterization to assess plant performance, identify opportunities for improvement and to provide a baseline for the future operation.Lundin’s investment to test the ores ahead of mining and to team with XPS’s experienced mineral processing engineers to help commission the plant has led to the plant achieving concentrator production targets shortly after startup. The commitment to training and implementation of best practices, and a culture where ongoing testing is the norm, puts the Eagle Operation on sound footing for future operation.INTRODUCTIONLundin’s Eagle Mine is a subsidiary of Lundin Mining located in the upper peninsula of Michigan. The mine itself is an underground operation and the ore is trucked from the Eagle mine site 2 hours to the Humboldt mill.The ore is an ultramafic hosted high grade Cu Ni deposit and exists as either massive or semi massive sulphides. The high resource grade of Cu (2.49%) and Ni (2.93%) make this a valuable ore source. (Owen & Meyer, 2013) A metallurgical team was put together by Lundin to ensure the mill was designed and commissioned to optimize metallurgy in the shortest time from this valuable deposit. The commissioning plan targeted commercial production by Q1 2015."

"Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. Des petits diamants dans la kimberlite pourraient être exposés à des niveaux proportionnellement supérieurs de résorption et de modification; de plus, des diamants idiomorphes pourraient cristalliser immédiatement avant l’éruption de la kimberlite. "IntroductionThis paper is intended to cover questions raised by operating staff at various installations and is not intended to give comprehensive coverage of power plant and power system design. The paper is concerned mainly with the electrics , although a brief section gives the reasons for selection of diesels rather than other prime movers.The material is not new but brings out points which seem to be raised regularly during the design , commissioning and operation o f a new plant. Diesels versus other Prime MoversDiesel-electric plant for the mining industry falls into two major categories -emergency power and prim e power.1) Emergency power (for use only when the regular utility supply has failed) requires reliable starting and operation and reasonable first cost. Fuel economy and maintenance are of little importance as the machine(s) generate few kilowatt hours only. The diesel&apos;s competition in this field is the gas turbine, however diesels are more widely used than gas turbines in this application.2) Prime power is a different situation as the bottom line of total cost is highly affected by fuel costs.In general , mines which are within reasonable transmission distance of an existing utility find the lowest net cost result s from hooking up to the utility. If a min e is remote from an electric utility then the possible alternatives are:a) Hydro- electric power if there is a site capable of development at reasonable cost including the cost of transmission facilities. Such sites are not common, but brief and inexpensive considerationof this possibility is warranted .b) Diesel power with consideration of different grades of fuel.c) Thermal (steam) power generation from coal or oil.d) Gas turbines.In addition to the above there is the possibility of wind power (as a supplementary source) and a number of technologies which may become feasible in the future (e.g. small nuclear plants, fuel cells). For obvious reasons, small isolated generating systems required for remote mines, tend to lean to conservative technology.Among the fossil fuel plants, the diesel enjoys advantage on over-all costs as summarized in Table 1."

"IntroductionHistoricalCyanidation is a leaching process, in world-wide use, to extract gold (and silver) from ores and concentrates. The process has many inherent advantages on account of its adaptability:a. to any scale of operation;b. to a wide range of ore types and mineral associations;c. to a wide range of physical characteristics of the gold particle size, alloy (electrum) or mineral (telluride);d. to relatively simple plant controls and operating procedures;e. to simple marketing procedures and quick cash return.The basic idea for cyanidation was first described and patented by a German chemist, L. Elsner, in 1846. Some forty years later, J.S. McArthur, a metallurgical chemist and R.W. and W. Forrest, medical doctors, all of Glasgow, Scotland, came to realize the import of the discovery and accordingly, registered patents in Great Britain in 1887 and in the United States in 1889.
