The oxidation behavior of niobium (columbium) has been studied in the temperature range 500° to 1200°C and at oxygen pressures of 760,100, 10, 1, and 0.1 mm of Hg. The work comprises kinetic studies of the oxidation as well as structural investigations of the oxidized specimens by means of X-ray diffraction, electron diffraclion, electron microscopy, and metal1ographic techniques. The oxidation reaction has a highly irregular temperature dependence and is unusually sensitive to changes in the oxygen pressure. The complex oxidation behavior is suggested to be due to formation of different Nb2O5 modifications in different temperature regions. During oxidation oxygen is also dissolved in the metal. Formation of oxide whiskers take place on the oxide surface at temperatures above approximately 800°C. In the writer&apos;s opinion, more stress should be put on field and microscope observations, as J. L. Gillson does. His discovery of relics of big labradorite feldspars from the Marcy anorthosite in all the other rocks is proof enough that previous field observations have been inadequate. The writer&apos;s field experience with anorthositic massifs is limited to the Egersund-Sogndal district in southern Norway; however, this is a very large and well exposed area. It seems to have so many points in common with the Adirondack region that a detailed comparison should be beneficial. This comparison was not possible 20 years ago, owing to the scarcity of geological data, at least for Norway. Both regions are now far better known-the Norway district because of the work of Professors Bugge and Barth33-35 and especially because of the extensive field and microscopic research of P. Michot,36-46 who introduced me in the field to the problems of that region.

Africa (communication to the Secretary*) :—About fourteen years ago, in southeastern Missouri,I used a method for the wet determination of lead which closely resembles the modified sulphate-chromate method described by Mr.. Guess. The principal difference, however, is, that after dissolving the lead chromate in hydrochloric acid, the chromic acid is determined by means of a standard solution of ferrous sulphate. The method, which I believe is still in use in southeastern Missouri, was found to be convenient and accurate for the determination of lead in the ores and various products of the mills and furnaces in that district, but it was never used for complex ores. In the biographical notice of Thomas F. Witherbee, published in.Bulletin NO. 32, August, 1909 (p. xxv), it is said that "he is believed to have been the first manager in America to use the chemical laboratory for the purpose of controlling the regular running of the blast-furnace." Since the year is not given, I cannot decide as to Mr. Witherbee&apos;s priority; but the statement leads me to contribute a bit of history, showing an early departure from the " rule-of-thumb " blast-furnace work to the employment of a chemist. In the autumn of 1868 the department of mining and metallurgy was established at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In connection with the assay-department a laboratory was equipped for making general commercial analyses. In January, 1869, Alexander L. Holley, the manager and builder of the Bessemer plant at the Rensselaer Works of John A. Griswold & Co., the first plant erected in the United States under the Bessemer patents, began to send me samples

This information was made available to the AIME Geophysics Unit Committee through the courtesy of Charles L. Elliot, Mining Coordinator for the SEG. The data were compiled from 245 responses to 496 questionnaires mailed (49%). The data for the U.S. are a realistic representation of actual activity, followed by Asia, Canada, Europe, Australia, Africa and Latin America in order of decreasing reliability.

Pennsylvania&apos;s existing large coal-fired units are limited to 2.0, 1.8, or 0.6 lb of sulfur per million Btu fired, depending on site location. Multi-stream coal preparation can be employed on system basis to extract the highest quality fraction of coal for use in units requiring the lowest sulfur. The middling fraction can be directed to units permitted higher sulfur. General Public Utilities Corp. has concluded that it is feasible to advance the state-of-the-art of heavy media coal preparation to produce an intensively cleaned primary product of 1.3 sp gr of less than 0.6 lb of sulfur per million Btu for the new unit and a middling product of 2.0 lb of sulfur per million Btu for existing units.

There&apos;s a right way and a wrong way to store diesel electric systems and similar equipment for generating on-site power, according to James Frankow, service manager for Allis-Chalmers Corp&apos;s Engine Division. In any event, the less storage the better. Many generating sets are stored before installation, especially when new construction is underway. Improper storage, or mothballing, can create initial reliability problems. Therefore; arrange for inside storage with no drastic extremes in temperature or humidity. If engines and alternators are stored in areas other than inside a dirt-free and temperature-controlled building, the unit or engine should be completely covered and protected against the environment. Before covering it with a canvas or with plastic, the unit should first be sealed at the following critical engine openings:

Philbrook (Cairiegie Institute of Technologyogv—Mr. Slatosky has presented an interesting and constructive paper that represents another step along the way of converting steelmaking from an art to a science. I am confident that his computer will be practical and successful and that with a very few months of experience it will provide a significantly better degree of control than his record of 65 pct of heats within range obtained with the slide-rule calculator . A paper such as this, with a lot of symbols and condensed mathematics, is difficult to comprehend quickly. Since I have had an opportunity to study it carefully, perhaps my evaluation of its validity and accomplishments will save time for others. Mr. Slatosky has correctly used standard principles of stoichiometry and heat balances, which are available to anybody, but he has also brought to them two original contributions: 1) He has developed from operating data some empirical relations for predicting the final FeO content of the slag (at 0.5 pct C end-point) as a function of slag basicity, lance height, and scrap, ore, and scale in the charge. This improves the accuracy of prediction of temperature or scrap requirement compared with assuming an arbitrary, constant FeO content at the end of each heat. There is no assurance yet that exactly the same relations will hold for other furnaces or practices, but similar correlations can be expected. 2) He has combined calculations that are ordinarily carried out laboriously as a number of individual steps into a single, simple linear equation that can readily be fed into a machine. This involved a tremendous amount of painstaking detail work as well as the imagination to see the possibility and work out the steps. While his particular Eqs. [3] and [6] are valid only for the furnace design, charge weight, and blowing time used at Aliquippa Works, only a few numerical values have to be changed to adapt it for other conditions. In order to arrive at a useable solution, Mr. Slatosky had to make some basic assumptions about the process that are similar to those used by others. He neglected variation in some process variables and assumed an arbitrary average value for waste gas analysis and temperature for want of more exact information at the present time. All of these judgments are clearly stated. In addition, some thermody-namic data presently available are not adequate for the job, notably in relation to heats of formation and sensible heat in slag, and some expedient has to be adopted to get around the difficulty. Other people might prefer slightly different judgments about these details and hence obtain somewhat different numerical solutions. This is not of serious importance, however, because the errors accumulate in the "heat loss" term and are largely self-compensating for a constant heat time. Although the extended Eq. l(a) in Appendix I was set up as a rate equation originally, for convenience in using an analogue computer as stated in the paper, the time dependence was removed by later mathematical manipulations and assumptions about the process. The final result is an integration of element and energy balances from initial to final states; this procedure is as legitimate here as in any other form of heat-balance calculation. The formal handling of stoichiometry and thermochemistry appears to be correct, and it is assumed that any arithmetical errors would have come to light in applying the calculations to furnace practice. Mr. Slatosky&apos;s approach is not necessarily unique, in that other people might start with apparently different equations or prefer another form of final equation for another type of computer. However, he has presented an accomplished result that appears to be a theoretically sound and practically useful way of applying scientific principles and rapid computation for better control of steelmaking. His success will undoubtedly encourage himself and others to improve on the mathematical model and its use as better informatioq becomes available. John F. Elliott (Massachusetts Institute of Teck-t2ology)-The last comment by Mr. Richards that a calculator is quite unnecessary for an L-D operation ?-equi??es a rebuttal. The L-D furnace is a very high capacity process which places a premium on close control. When one is making steel at rates between 100 and 200 tons per hr, one cannot afford the luxury of an extra 5 or 10 min at the end of a heat correcting for an error that should never have been made in the first place. Mr. Slatosky&apos;s paper is a very sound application of the simple principles of stoichiometry and the energy balance. It is a satisfactory and valuable start, but only the start of the development of methods of control for this process. An analysis of the process shows that it should be very suitable to control by a computer. This is especially the case when various grades of steel are to be made. In fact, it would seem that the organizations who are planning new and bigger installations of L-D vessels should consider carefully the advantages that would stem from computer control of a vessel with the operator present to do little more

A computer model was developed to calculate the fragmentation cost for in situ leaching operations as a function of the blast design and deposit parameters. The model is based on blasting an ore zone only or an ore zone plus overburden by either a coyote blast or a vertical blasthole system. The model calculates the blast design parameters and the fragmentation cost based either on a user input powder factor value or on a powder factor calculated by the model as a function of the overburden height and the ore zone thickness. Examples of blast design parameters calculated by the model are the number and spacing of blastholes for a vertical blasthole system and the number and spacing of crosscuts for a coyote system. The model also calculates the total amount of explosives, the detonating cord length, and the number of primers. The cost of blasthole drilling can be calculated by the model based either on purchasing and operating a drill or on a user input value of the contracted cost of drilling. Application of the model to an example ore deposit showed that the vertical blasthole systems were more economical than the coyote system when there was no overburden and the deposit had an average ore thickness less than 45 meters. With no overburden and ore thickness greater than 45 meters, the vertical blasthole system was either more or less expensive than the coyote system depending on the number of levels used in the coyote system. With overburden, the coyote system was less expensive than the vertical blasthole system for blasting either the ore only or the ore plus the overburden. A coyote blast will usually produce larger particle sizes than a vertical blasthole system. Larger particle sizes can result in lower copper recoveries so that a less expensive coyote blast may not improve the overall economics of an in situ leaching operation. Blasting the ore zone only was generally less expensive than blasting the ore plus the overburden by either blasting system. Also, for the example considered, the coyote system costs were less sensitive to changes in overburden thickness and powder factor while the vertical blasthole system costs were less sensitive to changes in ore thickness.

The hardness dependence on grain size for polycrys-talline cartridge brass and a leaded brass has been measured by Brine11 and Rockwell B testing. In each case, the hardness, H, depends on the average grain diameter, 1, according to: H =Ho + kHl-1/2 where Ho and kH are experimental constants. Diamond pyramid hardness values have also been measured as a function of the indentation size and grain size to give additional information on the nature of the hardness test and the dependence of hardness on micro-structure. The hardness of polycrystalline brass depends on its grain size. Bassett and Davis&apos; demonstrated this as early as 1919 by making Brinell hardness measurements on cartridge brass. Since then, the hardness of this type of material has been measured as a function of grain size by making Rockwell,2&apos;3 Vickers,4 and Brinell5 tests. he hardness dependence on grain size has also been measured for other materials. Angus and summers6 investigated the grain size dependence of the Brinell hardness of polycrystalline copper and a Cu-4.5 pct Sn bronze. In other studies, nickel,? Armco iron,Big an Fe-0.07 pct C alloy,I0 and an 0.39 pct C-12.45 pct Cr stainless steel" have been investigated. In some of the preceding cases, the hardness results have been analyzed to show that the hardness varies with the average grain diameter, 1, according to an l-l\4, l-1/4 or I-2 dependence,11-13 The studies of the influence of grain size on hardness have not been based on any theoretical model. This may be because the hardness of a material is itself a complicated property. However, attempts have been made to correlate, experimentally and theoretically, the hardness of a material with its unidirectional stress-strain behavior.14-l6 On this basis, Hall" proposed that the polycrystal hardness dependence on grain size might follow directly from the Hall-Petch18,19 relation for the grain size dependence of the yield stress. Thus, the hardness-grain size relation was given as: H = Ho + kHl-1/2 [1] where Ho and kH were taken as experimental constants. The relation was applied to the measurements on brass,&apos; copper,6 bronze,= and Armco iron.&apos; More recently, this relation was shown by Armstrong and jindal20 to adequately describe the measurements on cartridge brass made by Bassett and Davis&apos; and Babyak and Rhines.5 In this case, the relationship was taken a step further by independently relating the values of Ho and kH to the values of oyand ky, previously reported by Armstrong, Codd, Douthwaite, and petch21 from measurements of the yield stress dependence on grain size for this type of material. In the present investigation, new Brinell and Rockwell B hardness measurements have been made as a function of grain size for a cartridge brass and a leaded brass. In addition, diamond pyramid hardness values were measured as a function of the indentation size. All these results are applied to a further analysis of the hardness dependence on grain size. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Cartridge brass and a leaded brass were selected for this investigation for two main reasons: it was anticipated 1) that these materials could be cold-worked and recrystallized to a wide range in grain size and 2) that the results to be obtained on these typical industrial materials could be usefully compared with previous investigations. The chemical analyses of the actual materials which were employed are given in Table I. The as-received 1/2- and 3/4-in.-thick plates were given various reductions in thickness by cold rolling. The rolled material was heat-treated at various temperatures between 330" and 850°C for differing time periods from 5 min to 9 hr to achieve a variation in the average grain diameter between 0.0339 and 0.000543 cm.22 During heat treatment, the brass was protected from zinc loss by packing it in chips or foils of the same composition material. Reasonably equi-axed grain structures were obtained in each case. The metallurgical grain sizes of the specimens were determined from measurements of the average linear intercept on a random line. Annealing twin interfaces were not counted along with grain boundaries. The
