Kinking in zinc single-crystal tension specimens was observed under conditions of low stress and high temperature. Kinking is discussed in relation to other plastic bending phenomena on the basis of dislocation theory. Experiments on the stress-induced motion of small angle boundaries are reported. KINKING was first reported by Orowan1 as a new deformation mechanism. He observed the phenomenon in cadmium single crystals loaded in compression. Glide lamellae in a local region of the rod were observed to snap over suddenly to a tilted position, resulting in a sudden shortening of the specimen. Between the tilted portion and the rest of the crystal there were fairly sharp boundaries, with the slip plane assuming approximately mirror image positions on opposite sides of these boundaries. Orowan considered the boundaries to be regions where dislocations had concentrated. Hess and Barrett' observed the formation of kinks in critically oriented zinc compression specimens. It was found that the sudden snapping over of the tilted region was not an essential part of the kinking phenomenon but rather was associated with the method of loading. Kinking was explained on the basis of the accepted mechanisms of slip and flexural glide. It was also suggested that a kink can be considered as a special type of deformation band. During a recent investigation of the effect of surface condition on creep of zinc single crystals," a similar phenomenon was observed in crystals which were loaded in tension. The specimens were 0.4 in. diam cylindrical rods with a free length of 4 in. between end connections. All of the crystals were tested at a constant load. adjusted to give an extension rate of approximately 0.05 pct per hr. Kinking, as shown in Fig. 1, occurred in some of the tests performed at temperatures above 200°C. Kinking was observed in specimens varying widely in initial orientation, scattering about a 45" angle between the slip plane and the specimen axis. The condition leading to kinking in tension appeared to be non-uniform distribution of flow along the gage length combined with the restraint imposed by the tensile load. At low temperatures and fast strain rates, the distribution of strain throughout the midsection of tension specimens was generally quite uniform; therefore, bend planes developed only near the ends as described by Miller.4 However, at high temperatures under creep conditions it was difficult to obtain specimens in which the distribution of flow was uniform. Some of the factors which may have caused differences in flow stress along the length of the crystals are: Nonuniform distribution of impurities, accidents of growth (lineage structure), slight bending or other damage during handling, surface conditions, and strain-aging characteristics due to dissolved nitrogen." Plastic flow, once started in a local region, often continued to a relatively large strain before other parts of the gage length became active. Under these conditions a series of kinks, such as those in Fig. 1, were produced. Fig. 2 illustrates how a nonuniform distribution of slip produces bending moments which- are responsible for kink formation. If no plastic bending were to occur while the rod extended by pure slip in two separate sections of the rod, it would assume a shape such as that in Fig. 2a. A specimen having this shape and being subjected to a tension load would have concentrations of stress at the concave surfaces C and lower than average stress would exist at the convex surfaces D. Therefore a bending moment is superimposed on the average stress in the regions between C and D. The positions of potential bend planes under these conditions are shown as dotted lines. Actually no such shape as Fig. 2a develops because plastic bending in the region C-D occurs simultaneously with pure slip in the intervening regions. The observed structure of a tension kink is indicated by Fig. 2b. Perhaps the best approach to an understanding of kinking as well as other related plastic bending phenomena, such as the bend planes discussed by Miller,' cell formation studied by Wood et al.,6 and polygonization,7 is consideration of the dislocation model of a bent lattice. Current theories of the slip process postulate generation or multiplication of dislocations at certain lattice imperfections. A comprehensive investigation has been undertaken to clarify how pellets are affected by alkali circulating in the blast furnace. The investigation has been performed with acid and basic pellets in a special furnace. Experiments were carried out to ascertain the influence of potassium on swelling and reducibility when added at different stages of reduction. After that, the significance of the quantity of potassium added in the hematite stage was studied. A parallel experiment with sodium as the alkali component was also con- ducted. Besides these vaporization experiments the effect of alkali on softening and reduction characteristics at high temperatures was investigated. The results showed that alkali always increases swelling, especially when added in the hematite stage. The addition of alkali increases reducibility of acid pellets during reduction from wustite to 70 % reduction. The softening temperature is significantly lowered by the addition of alkali and is, in any case, lower for acid pellets than for basic pellets. The microscopic studies showed that alkali ferrites can be formed irrespective of the influence of alkali on the slag phase.

A number of measurements have been made on the vapor pressure of pure iron at 1600°C. Experiments were carried out by the transportation method in which a sample of iron is exposed in a furnace to a stream of pure argon, metered at a predetermined flow rate for a specified period of time. The vapor pressure was obtained from the weight loss of the sample. A detailed diagram of the apparatus used for the experiments is given in Fig. 1. It consisted of a horizontal molybdenum-wire-wound furnace fitted with a recrystallized alumina tube 1 1/8 in. internal diam. The boats, 1 by 3/16 by 1/8 in., were fired in argon at 1600°C to constant weight before use. After this treatment, subsequent heating of the boats to 1600°C gave little or no further change in weight, e.g. ±0.05 mg in 24 hr. The furnace and reaction tube were separately fed with argon from two independent flowmeters. These were connected to a common supply source via an argon purification furnace containing metallic titanium sponge at 700°C, and an anhydrone drying-tower. A rotary displacement-type meter was included in the gas train to provide a direct means of measuring the total volume of gas passed through the reaction tube. The material used was vacuum melted high-purity iron in the form of wire 2mm in diam. The following impurities were present in the iron: 0.008 pct C, 0.002 pct Si, 0.005 pct Mn, 0.008 pct S, 0.001 pct P, 0.01 pct Ni, 0.001 pct Cr, 0.006 pct Cu, and 0.001 pct Al. Samples consisting of three small pieces of this wire were laid end to end in a recrystallized alumina-combustion boat, and were separated by small fragments of alumina. The wire samples were then melted in argon to form spherical beads 2 to 3 mm in diam. After weighing, the boat with its contents was placed on the boat carrier and introduced into the cool end of the reaction tube. The entire furnace system was then flushed with argon for 30 min. At the end of this period, the flow of argon to both furnace and reaction tubes was adjusted to the desired level; then the boat was slid rapidly into the hot-zone of the reaction tube. After a known volume of gas had passed through the reaction tube, the boat was withdrawn quickly to the cool end of the furnace. When quite cool, the boat was removed from the fur-mace and placed in a desiccator for subsequent re-weighing. The semi-micro balance used in these experiments had a sensitivity of 0.005 mg. The above procedure was repeated at several flow rates within the range of 25 to 300 ml per min. The flow of argon in the annular space between the two tubes was at a rate of 300 ml per min in all experiments. During all the experiments the furnace temperature was maintained at 1600° ± 5°C by means of a temperature controller. The temperature of the reaction zone was measured with a Tinsley high precision disappearing filament pyrometer which was initially calibrated against a Pt-13 pct Rh/Pt thermocouple; the errors due to temperature measurements were within * 5°C. RESULTS Assuming that the iron vapor is in the monatomic state, the vapor pressure can be calculated from the weight loss of the sample and the volume of the carrier gas. The results obtained are plotted in Fig. 2 against the rate of flow of argon through the chamber containing liquid iron beads. At low flow rates, the thermal diffusion of iron gives an apparent high vapor pressure, but at high gas flow rates, the carrier gas is not saturated with the vapor, and therefore, low vapor-pressure values are obtained. This is now a well-known phenomenon. There is a distinct inflexion of the curve at about 120 to 160 ml per min rate of argon flow and the vapor pressure of iron within this

CERTAIN local conditions were known to govern in large measure the successful adaptation of liquid-oxygen explosives to the large-scale blasting at Chuquicamata. The wide variation in hardness of the rock at this mine makes necessary the use of several types of explosives. A locally manufactured, relatively cheap black powder is used in blasting the softer waste and capping material, where a thorough displacement, breaks the ground sufficiently. Before the introduction of L. 0. X., an ammonia dynamite of about 65 per cent. strength was being used exclusively in the harder underlying orebody, where a strong disruptive as well as a displacement effect is required for breaking the ore. The L. 0. X., as developed for quarry work in the United States, has a practically pure carbon cartridge material, and the explosive has an extremely high rate of detonation, which should therefore cause it to usefully develop its full disruptive effect in hard ground. The individual blasts at Chuquicamata are large, black-powder shots which dislodge masses of rock averaging 250,000 tons each, and dynamite shots which dislodge masses averaging 80,000 tons each. It was desirable, therefore, to attempt to displace with L. 0. X. the faster, higher-cost ammonia dynamite used in the smaller blasts. It was not considered practical to attempt to displace the low-cost black powder with L. 0. X., as estimated costs showed no probable saving if this were accomplished. Since it was desirable to continue shooting relatively large blasts for effective operation, it was recognized that larger storage facilities than had been in use would be needed for the liquid oxygen. Because of the difficulty of transporting and discharging large storage containers of efficient design, the better plan appeared to be storage and discharge of the liquid at the place of manufacture, and transportation of the filled soaking boxes to the blast.

This paper gives the results of experiments conducted in the metallurgical laboratory of the Ohio State University with the objects of determining: First, the calorific powers of a number of coals in general use in Ohio; and second, how far ordinary analytical methods could be used as a basis for computing these values. Incidentally a test of the performance of the calorimeter was involved. The chemical work has been carried on in the department for some time, so that the whole investigation has extended over three or four years. The Mahler calorimeter was purchased from L. Golaz in Paris, and is practically identical with the one described and figured by Mahler in his monograph "Contribution a l'Etude des Combustibles," from the Bulletin de la Société d' Encouragement pour l'lndustrie Nationale. A figure and description is also given by William Kent in The Mineral Industry for 1892, page 97. There were furnished with the instrument three thermometers covering a range of from 7°.5 C. to 31° C. Thermometer "A" (17°.5 to 31°) was carefully calibrated by reading the ends of a thread of mercury in sixteen positions covering the whole scale, supplementing this by readings of longer threads and deducing the errors of scale by the method published by Prof. Holman in the Technology Quarterly of September, 1887. The maximum error of a single reading was found to be 0°.0042 C. Thermometer "B" (13° to 25°) was compared directly with " A " over the scale common to both, and a variation was found of 0°.0145 C. for 7°.5 (or 0°.002 for l°) of the scale. Thermometer " C" ('7°.5 to 19°.0) was omitted from the cornparison, as it was rarely used, being only required where measurements were made at low temperatures. From the

RECENTLY Wallbaum¹ found that copper wires with different degrees of deformation up to 98.7 pct area reduction recrystallize giving a [112] texture, while deformation over 98.7 pct gives either a [l00] texture at low temperatures or a [1ll] texture at high temperatures. Furthermore it was found that the recrystallization temperature as a function of deformation up to 98.7 pct decreases as expected, but increases over that deformation. Wallbaum concluded that the different textures have different recrystallization temperatures. The [112] texture has the lowest and [Ill] the highest. At the same time Bassi² found that for high deformation (over 99 pct area reduction) and for an annealing temperature of 400°C, the [l00] texture first forms and with prolonged annealing time the [12] texture appears through grain growth. This secondary texture does not appear if the wire is annealed at 1000°C before the deformation. From these two papers it might be concluded that the [I12] texture can appear either as a primary or as a secondary texture after annealing. The texture formed in a special case depends on the previous history of the wire. Probably the texture of the wire prior to the last deformation is important. To investigate this, wires were produced by adequate deformation and annealing to give a [l00], a [112], and a [lll] texture. The wires then were given a series of different deformations and were annealed at various temperatures, after which the textures were studied. Experimental Work The copper used was electrolytic tough-pitch (Cu 99.90 pct and 0, 0.04 pct). In a recent technical note, Owen Thornton&apos; suggests that wetting liquid relative permeability may be derived from the relationship: where Pd/Pc is the ratio of displacement pressure to capillary pressure at the wetting liquid satdration Sw, and I is the resistivity index at this saturation. Thornton shows that this expression gives values for relative permeability in good agreement with those experimentally determined by Leverett. We have recently developed another expression for krw which seems preferable to Equation 1 since it requires fewer experimental data for its verification. This equation may be derived in the following manner. Making use of the analogy between mass transfer of fluid in a porous medium and electrical conductivity through the fluid in the same medium, we can postulate a hydraulic formation resistivity factor analogous to an electrical formation resistivity factor. From Poiseuille&apos;s Law the resistivity to flow in a tube of radius R is of the form 8u/R², where is the viscosity of the fluid. Similarly7 the resistivity to flow in a porous medium of the same dimensions as the tube is given by D&apos;Arcy&apos;s Law as where k is the permeability of the medium. The hydraulic formation resistivity factor, Ff, is thus the quotient of these two resistivities, or: But permeability is defined by the KO-zeny equation as: where: r is the average pore radius of the porous medium, L. is the average tortuous length of the average pore, + is the porosity, and L is the bed length. This gives Fr as a function of the (La/L) .-.-.tortuosity ratio and porosity, or in explicit form: where: T = (La/L)&apos;, and N is the number of pores of radius, r, which will be found in any cross sectional area, x R&apos;. That is, N = R²/r². It will be clear from the foregoing considerations that the hydraulic formation fat. tor should be dependent on the value of R which in every case must be arbitrarily selected. By analogy, the hydrauiic formation factor, Fcf, characterizing the porous medium at Sw<1,will be given by: R² NT. where ke is the effective wetting liquid permeability obtaining at Sw<l, and Te is the square of the (Las/L) ratio defined by Thornton. Computations based on Leverett&apos;s data, quoted by Thorntaon, gives computed krw values somewhat lower than the experimental values. Moreover, other instances can be cited where we find that neither Equation 1 nor Equa tion 2 is checked by experimental data. The work of Botset&apos; on the Nichols Buff sandstone and Morse et a1 on oil wetted Bradford sandstone are such instances. A reason for these discrepancies may lie in the fact that if both Equations 1 and 2 are presumed always to give accurate values for krw, it follows that PC = Pd/Sw". Such an expression, it is well known, is too simple to describe accurately the capillary pressure behavior of all porous media. However, it is believed that a particular advantage resides on the use of Equation 2, since it is not dependent for its utility on a knowledge of the capillary pressures obtaining in dynamic flow svsterns. No practical technique for measuring the capillary pressures characterizing the fluid distributions in dynamic flow systems has yet been proposed. Acknowledgment is given to Dr. Paul D. While the production of this state has not realized the early hopes that this coal would replace eastern coal on the Pacific Coast, it has been steady though small. Nearly all of the tonnages given are from Goodyear&apos;s, The Coal Mines of the Western Coast of the U. s., a carefully com- piled and accurate account of the development of the industry along the Pacific. THE engineers of Illinois have been submitting to the State Geological Survey an increasing number of requests for advice on their geological problems, including landslides, unequal settling of fills, laying pavements across peat bogs, shattering and heaving of pavement by frost action, etc. The authors discussed the behavior of landslides, their effects, their causes, a tentative classification, and remedial measures. In the latter connection the efficacy of drainage and how it should be handled in order to be most effective was considered. The principles and efficacy of other remedial measures, such as subsurface blasting, rock anchoring, installation of wood, concrete or steel piling, construction of retaining walls, construction of cribbing and reduction of slope were also discussed. Attention was also given to the matter of applying geological knowledge to avoid undesirable highway locations, and a specific example was cited.

(Communication to the Secretary): Having spent considerable time in a systematic study of this field,&apos;both as regards the details of its structure and stratigraphy and the broader question of its relation to the Appalachian basin, I wish to add a word concerning the correlations made by Mr. Hodge in his paper. From A commercial standpoint, the question of correlation, even along the strike, is of little or no importance, for the variability is such that each opening should be tested individually, regardless of the horizon at which it appears; but these correlations assume an entirely different aspect when their scientific bearing is considered; they then become of vital importance, and, before being accepted, should be subjected to the most rigid scrutiny and severe tests. Mr. Hedge states positively that the Imboden seam of coal is equivalent to the Elkhorn coal of Pike and Letcher counties, Kentucky. In the writer&apos;s opinion, such equivalency is, at the utmost, only a possibility. This correlation has been generally adopted by the geologists of the Kentucky Geological Survey, but the writer has been unable to find on what grounds they base the statement. The evidence of identity seems to be in the character of the coal, as both seams furnish fine coking coal; also, in the similarity of the interval between them aid the " Bee Rock," or top of the great conglomerate. It is probably an easy matter to determine the thickness of this interval on Elkhorn creek, and we will assume that the measure of 300 to 350 feet is correct. In the Big Stone Gap field, the question of measuring the interval between the Imboden and the " Bee Rock " is exceedingly difficult. The line of outcrop of this mass of strata is along the northern base of Stone mountain, and, in the uprising of the great arch, the strata on its flanks have been thrown into many minor folds, and, in places, have been broken by local faults. This complicated structure, together with the absence of ally well-marked stratum, renders it exceedingly difficult to obtain a correct measure of the intervening sandstones and shales. Safety in coal mines depends largely upon adequate training of the foreman. Although management must provide modern and safe equipment and at all times keep mines in first class condition from a safety viewpoint, final results will be determined by the quality of supervision. HANNA COAL CO., Division of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., operates three large underground mines in eastern Ohio. The section of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal seam in which these mines are located varies in thickness from 52 to 64 in. It is immediately overlain by a stratum of shaly material 12 to 15 in. thick locally known as draw slate, which is structurally very weak and which disintegrates rapidly upon exposure to atmosphere. Immediately above the draw slate as it is normally found is a band of extremely high ash material 6 to 12 in. thick known as roof coal or rooster coal, and above this is a stratum of conglomerate material varying from 4 to 10 ft in depth. Overlying the conglomerate is a relatively thick stratum of limestone, the first stable material above the Pittsburgh coal seam in eastern Ohio. With the method of full-seam mining that has been adopted, draw slate is shot down, loaded with the coal, and removed in the preparation plants. The roof coal then becomes the permanent roof. The major problem in mining the No. 8 seam in eastern Ohio is control of the roof. Since the strata above the draw slate contains no material with a structure firm enough to provide self-support, the roof begins to sag in a relatively short time after the coal and draw slate have been removed. The problem thus becomes one of getting temporary safety posts under this roof as quickly as possible to prevent a break or separation from occurring either in the roof coal or in the conglomerate above it. Haulage System The Pittsburgh No. 8 seam in eastern Ohio is relatively level, with only minor local dips. Throughout the Hanna Coal Co. mines, entries are generally 12 ft wide. Rooms are driven on a 60" angle on 30-ft centers and are 22 ft wide. No attempt is made to extract the 8-ft pillars between. The entire length of main line haulage is gunited in one mine, and a major portion in another. Two of the mines have single-track main haulage roads with passways. The third, a new mine, is double-tracked, and the roof is supported by steel crossbars, 60 lb or heavier, spaced on 4-ft centers and lagged. In recent years timbering on main line and secondary haulage roads has been accomplished by one of two methods: 1—crossbars are supported on a small section of post set in a hitch hole in the rib, or 2—or a hole is drilled in the rib about 12 in. below the roof, of sufficient depth to fasten securely a short length of 40-lb rail, the bottom of the rail facing the roof, on which a short post is set directly under the crossbar. At present the hitch-hole timbering method is favored. At two of the mines the main line haulage locomotives are 26-ton, 8-wheel units. These locomotives are of the axleless type, each wheel being individually mounted on the frame. The motorman&apos;s compartment is encircled by 3-in. armor plate for the protection of the occupants. At the third underground mine conventional 15-ton locomotives are being used. However, these locomotives have been completely rebuilt in the company&apos;s shops. Equipment has been streamlined and quarters have been provided for two people, who are protected by heavy steel plate in much the same way described above. This modernization program has been completed on all secondary haulage locomotives at the three mines, and the company is well on the way to similar equipment of the 6-ton section locomotives. The following additional features have been included in their modernization: 1—additional support for the motors to prevent their falling to the middle of the track and derailing the locomotives should a break occur in the suspension bar support; 2—installation of additional bracing to prevent brake rigging from becoming displaced and causing derailments; 3—enclosure of all electric wiring in conduit or raceway; 4—provision of an enclosed compartment for the storage of re-railers, jacks, and other equipment, so that they need not be carried on the outside of the motor; and 5—redesign of the end of the locomotive opposite the operator&apos;s compartment to prevent anyone&apos;s mounting from that direction. Walters, Jr. and Howard Scott. Introduction F. M. Walters, Jr.—The principal advantages of the dilatometric method perhaps are two, as compared with the method of thermal analysis. One is that the dilatometric method can be applied with a large variety of rates of heating and cooling, whereas thermal analysis—that is, the study of the transformational characteristics by means of heat evolution—is limited to the rates of heating and cooling that reveal the evolution of heat. The dilatometer can be used for the study Of reactions at zero rates of heating and cooling; that is, isothermal reactions. As you will hear this afternoon, the rates have been pushed up as far as 500°C. a second. The other advantage is that the dilatometric method shows that a two-phase region is a two-phase region, whereas the thermal analysis merely reveals the temperature at which the rates of heat evolution are greatest.

THE growth of domestic requirements for motor fuel has been phe-nomenal, rising year after year in a fashion almost unique among com-modities, resisting depressions and forging rapidly ahead in times of prosperity. Consumption advanced from 226 millions of barrels in 1925 to 522 millions of barrels in 1938; or 130 per cent. The economic influ-ences generating and sustaining this demand are of vital concern to the petroleum industry. The general factors affecting utilization of motor fuel are well known but it is the purpose of this paper to employ the recently developed technique of economic dynamics to describe them mathematically. Such problems in economic analysis are complicated by the freedom of all the variables to fluctuate, their mutual interdependence, changing incidence upon one another, and the nonquantitative character of some of them. Economic quantities and relationships, unlike those of the physical world, are continuously changing and this dynamic characteristic is both a distinguishing and confusing feature in economic research. The com-plexities of the problems require application of the analytical devices of mathematical statistics to uncover the probable relationships between factors. The procedure employed is to formulate a logical relationship linking the dependent to the independent variables, and then simul-taneously, rather than sequentially, determine their separate effects by multiple correlation. This transformation of common knowledge to quantitative terms makes it possible to measure the probable effects of changing conditions upon requirements, assisting in the sound interpreta-tion of economic policies. The utility of the results of such dynamic analysis is in sharp contrast to the sterility of the trends and other simple empiricisms of descriptive statistics. It is not intended in this study to throw light on the reasons why any motor fuel at all is consumed; but to discover relationships explaining why more was consumed at one time than at another. A STUDY of passivity in chromium-iron alloys holds considerable interest, both because of the present-day practical importance of the stainless steels, and because of the scientific importance attached to the mechanism of their corrosion resistance. Upon the discovery of the passive chromium-iron alloys in 1912, it seemed logical to attribute the observed phenomenal corrosion resistance to a thin, continuous, protective reaction product on the surface. The product was thought to be Cr2O3 or a similar oxide containing both chromium and iron. This mechanism seemed likely in view of Michael Faraday&apos;s conjecture that passive iron is not reactive in concentrated nitric acid because of an oxide on the metal surface.† Since 1912, data have accumulated that permit a further exploration into the nature of passivity and provide a new approach to the problem. A summary of the facts lends considerable weight to a mechanism based not on physical protection of an oxide or similar compound, although such compounds may be present on the surface, but to a change in tendency of surface metal atoms to react chemically. This change in reaction tendency is ascribed to chemisorbed films that effectively satisfy residual valence forces of the metal surface, but do not appreciably disturb the positions of metal atoms in the lattice. In other words, formation of a new lattice such as that of an oxide is not a necessary condition for this type of passivity. The decreased reaction tendency of the metal by reason of chemisorbed films can thereby account for low reaction rates of the stainless steels in many media, as well as a noble galvanic potential as is observed. Substances capable of adsorbing on the stainless steels, and hence accompanying the property of passivity, are typically oxygen, nitrites or chromates, but are not in any sense limited to these. Other elements and compounds can also chemisorb, and therefore may also play a major part in the mechanism of passivity in specific media. The mechanism of passivity based on chemisorption or activated adsorption begins with the interpretation Langmuir proposed for his experiments concerning adsorbed oxygen on tungsten.1 He found that adsorbed oxygen was tightly bound, remaining on the tungsten surface above temperatures at which WO3 rapidly volatilizes.
