(Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) THE paper presented to the Institute in 1910, by H. 0. Hofman, on Recent Progress in Blast Roasting,1 has called the attention of the iron industry to the adaptability of these processes to the reclamation of by-products such as flue-dust and blue billy, and the better preparation of concentrates and fine ores for use in blast-furnaces. The waste of valuable iron-ore through the production of flue-dust has increased at an enormous rate, and much of it has in reality been wasted as far as future recovery is concerned. Only in recent years has a possible future value been recognized, and the material stored. The increased use of Mesabi ores, which carry considerable fine ore, is principally responsible for the great increase in the production of flue-dust. The amount of fine material that is carried over depends on the fineness of the material and the velocity of the gases, and also to a very great extent on the regularity or irregularity of the working of the furnace. Attempts to recover a part of this loss have been made by recharging a portion of the production into the furnace, but as this material has been once carried out from the furnace, it is naturally in good shape to be carried out again. A recent practice at some works, is to soak the flue-dust thoroughly with water to give it more cohesiveness, but by many this is considered of doubtful advantage in the furnace, and the gases are in consequence heavily laden with moisture. There are vast deposits of magnetic iron-ores in the United States and Canada that are too low in iron for use at the present time, but which can be economically concentrated into very rich material ; in many cases the fineness of crushing necessary to secure proper concentration has prevented their

THE determination of the question whether the Mayari and Moa mining-claims of the Spanish-American Iron Co. have been rightly denounced under the third section of the law of bases rests on the findings in the following questions of fact: 1. Is the mineral an iron-ore? 2. Is the iron-ore a bog iron-ore? 3. Is the iron-ore ocher? 4. If ocher is present, can it be mined separately and independently of the iron-ore ? 1. IS THE MINERAL AN IRON-ORE? Since the material is shown by a large number of analyses to contain from 41. to 50 per cent. of metallic iron and less than 0.02 per cent. of phosphorus, and since it has been and is being actually used on a commercial scale for the production of iron and steel, it must be classed as an iron-ore. 2. IS THE IRON-ORE A BOG IRON-ORE? Bog iron-ore has certain invariable characteristics of chemical composition, physical appearance, geological relations, and origin by which it can always be recognized with certainty. In chemical composition, it is the hydrated sesquioxide of iron, limonite, or a mixture of limonite and other closely-related iron hydrates. It never contains the anhydrous oxides-hematite or magnetite; is never magnetic, and never contains either nickel, chromium, or cobalt oxides. On the other hand, it is invariably high in phosphorus-content. In physical appearance and texture it is a yellow or reddish-brown amorphous spongy material, and always contains water-worn sand-grains, silt, clay, and plant-remains. The combination wet and dry coal-cleaning process is not an attempt at a compromise between the wets and the drys nor is its merit confined entirely to the limitation of moisture in the smaller sizes. It is more correctly, and more broadly, an application of the sized-coal cleaning principle adapting itself in an ideal fashion to present day multiple-size preparation practice. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to call attention to the broader significance of the term "combination wet and dry process" and to mention some of the factors that govern its application. In the narrow sense, when considered apart from the sized-coal cleaning principle, the combination process finds its justification chiefly in the ability to limit the moisture in cleaned coal. Larger sizes of coal offer less superficial area compared with their bulk for the attraction of moisture films. They drain more readily in bins or railroad cars, having more interstitial space for the free flow of water. Therefore, they neither attract nor hold objectionable moisture percentages. In fact, there is so keen a demand for certain washed sizes containing some moisture that hygroscopic salts such as calcium chloride are applied to attract and retain it. When coal deliveries are made on a guaranteed moisture percentage the coarser sizes may be washed and mixed back with the fines without adding greatly to the original moisture but the fines must be dry cleaned or dried to control moisture. Thus in all respects moisture in the coarser sizes is less objectionable than in the fines. The implication of this statement, that moisture is always more or less objectionable, is true. It is safe to say that if dry-cleaning apparatus could be perfected to a point at which its technical results, cost and other aspects would be equal to wet washing, water would no longer be used. As it is, we find that good technical results are more difficult to obtain by dry cleaning than by water. Obviously the use of air tables for coarse coal is not ideal, for it involves the attempt to stratify material in a thin bed on a table surface when the load is only one particle deep. Furthermore, the various air cleaning tables on large sizes require a large volume of air for separation, more power to operate, more dust-collecting apparatus and involve more coal breakage.

What is the cumulative rate of recovery of copper from a sulfide leach dump? The technical answers to this frequently asked question may vary from "I don't know" to "quite good" from people of the same company. Management also poses this question because it plays a vital role in planning future production. The answer is difficult because of the many variables between different operations such as physical construction of the dump, topography of the original site, characteristics of dump material, mineralization, and water application. Each of these factors and others have a bearing on the rate of recovery. Anaconda's method of water distribution at Butte is unique in that each dump is drilled to allow physical injection of water into the dump. The injection holes are drilled vertically on 25-ft centers from the surface of the dump [(Figs. 1 and 2)]. Normally, the holes are drilled 40 ft deep and cased with 4-in. PVC perforated pipe. The pipe is perforated at 1-ft intervals with four 1 -in.-diam holes at 90° spacing on the pipe circumference. Formerly, shallow holes (20-40 ft) were alternated with deep holes (80-180 ft) in an effort to cover the entire dump and hasten oxidation. The shallow hole depth varied according to the compaction thickness. The deep hole depth varied according to the height of the dump and the original ground profile. It is preferable to have the deep holes end 20-30 ft above the original ground level. This generally allows penetration of the coarse material at the bottom of the dump. Cobalt and nickel have been diffused at tracer concentrations in gold at several temperatures in the range from approximately 700° to 950°C. The diffusion penetration profiles were determined by a serial sectioning technique in which the gold is first anodized and then the anodic layer is dissolved in acid. In this ulay sections as thin as 250A could be removed reproduci-bly. In all cases, the region close to the specimen surface was characterized by irregular behavior in the sense that the logarithm of concentration was not linear in the square of the penetration distance. In sotne cases, there zuas an indication of the operation of very slow dijfusion in this region, while in others the apparent diffusion coejj'icient was negative. Possible reasons for this anomalous behavior are briefly discussed. In recent years it has been found that the region close to the surface of a metal can sometimes exhibit anomalously slow diffusion characteristics relative to the interior of the metal. One of the best examples of this fact is the work of Styris and omizuka,' who showed that the apparent diffusion coefficient for zinc in the region withi: about 1 p of the free surface of copper was about ,,,, that at deeper penetrations. This result is particularly interesting, because it is free from the possibly complicating effects of low solubility of the diffusing tracer in the solvent metal. In the case of diffusion under conditions of low solubilitjr, interpretaticn of the results in terms of lattice diffusion is difficult because of the enhanced short-circuiting produced by segregation to dislocations.2'3 Measurements by Duhl et 1. suggest that cobalt diffusing in gold may also show a near-surface effect of this type. Once again the solubility is high, so that this result could be of great interest. However, the technique used for analyzing the diffusion penetration zones by Duhl, viz. the counting of residual gamma activity in the specimen following sectioning, appears to have indicated a near-surface effect in a parallel experiment on the self-diffusion of gold reported at the same time. The latter result is known to be spurious, since Kidson5 has demonstrated that self-diffusion in gold does not show this effect. Duhl et 01. also reported some measurements on the diffusion of nickel in gold, but failed to give any data for the near-surface region. As the solubility of nickel in gold is high, such data would also be of special interest. We, therefore, decided to conduct another set of experiments on the diffusion of nickel and cobalt in gold, using a sectioning technique that allows the individual sections to be assayed for solute content and thus gives direct determinations of penetration profiles. Also, by sectioning with an anodizing/stripping tech- nique, very thin layers can be removed and the region close to the surface studied in detail. MATERIALS The gold specimens were supplied as single crystal disks $ in. in diam by a in. high by Monocrystals Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. The gold itself was of spectro-scopic purity, i.e., better than 99.99 pct pure. METHOD Specimen Preparation. One flat end face of each gold crystal was spark planed with a Servomet spark erosion machine set for minimum spark energy. Following this treatment the crystals were preannealed for 2 to 4 days at temperatures of either 400" or 700°C. The three crystals preannealed at 700°C showed signs of recrystallization. The spark-planed end face of each crystal was then coated with the appropriate amount of 63i or 60 radioactive tracer. This deposit was laid down in a simple plating bath containing the as-supplied solution of the radioactive isotope as well as sufficient ammonium oxalate to saturate the solution. Some ammonium oxalate remained undissolved on the floor of the bath for this purpose. During plating further additions of ammonium oxalate were sometimes required to allow the plating to continue satisfactorily, perhaps due to passivation of the undissolved oxalate already present. The thickness of the deposited layer was determined by comparison of the apparent surface activity of the plated specimen with that of a similar specimen having a weighable deposit of the isotope on its end face. Correction for self-absorption of the radiation was made in this calculation. Annealing. The deposited crystals were annealed in a hydrogen atmosphere in sealed silica tubes. During this heat treatment they were supported, active face down, on optically flat silica plates. The temperature was measured with calibrated Pt vs Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples, and the tabulated values can be taken to be correct to Z°C. All the crystals showed evidence of recrystallization following these heat treatments, suggesting that initially they may not have been good single crystals or had suffered strain during delivery. Concentration Profile Analysis. After annealing, the crystals were sectioned by the anodizing-stripping technique.6 The anodizing involved suspension of the specimen with its cylindrical axis horiz6ntal by a gold wire in a 200-ml beaker containing 1 M Hg304. A cathode in the form of a strip of gold sheet, 2 in. wide and positioned to be in contact with the curved side of the beaker, completely encircled the specimen. An anodizing current of 30 ma, corresponding to a current density of 5 ma per sq cm on the surface of the specimen, was passed for times ranging from 5 to 150 min depending on the thickness of gold to be removed; the solution was stirred continuously during this process. NEW trend in geophysics has been uncovered in these depression years, made evident through the thinning cloak of commercial activity, which, in better times, would have completely obscured it. I refer to the increasing use of these methods for geological investigations by federal and state geological surveys. This is a trend that has been gathering momentum not alone in the United States, but abroad as well. Thus, in Poland, the Geological Survey has been playing an increasing role in geophysical work since 1927, and now has- its own geophysical department. The government petroleum producing organization of Argentina has its Geophysical Commission; Brasil boasts a completely equipped geophysical department in its Mineral Production Service; the government of Chile has contracted with commercial companies for geophysical surveys; Peru is planning an intensive program of geophysical prospecting in its petroliferous regions; and Canada has, for several years, cooperated with

THERE has been a running discussion over the-past several years with respect to the life and adequacy of our natural gas reserves.. Some of the experts agree on one phase of the subject at least--that eventually it will be necessary to augment deliveries of natural gas in the northern markets by the development of a more or less comparable synthetic gas made from coal. The purpose of this paper is to point out: 1. It may be later than a good many people think-the demand for additional domestic and commercial pipeline gas in at least one section of the North will probably be felt rather keenly before an adequate synthetic pipeline-gas project, developed on economic lines, could be completed, even if ' initiated in the near future. 2. The evidence is considerable that such a project would be technically sound and economically self-supporting, although the margin of profit at first might be so small and the magnitude of an economic enterprise so great that financing would be impossible without Government aid in some form or other. The part of the country referred to is the heavily populated section in the northeast of the United States. To simplify an examination of the situation, let us take the potential marketing areas within range to the north and east of the three pipelines: 1. Tennessee Gas Transmission Co. as it enters Erie County, New York state. 2. Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation just before the tap that supplies the general Philadelphia area. 3. Transcontinental G& Pipe Line Corporation as it enters the state of New Jersey The sources of gas for these three pipelines are in Texas and Louisiana. The ultimate maximum combined capacity of the three lines at the points stated is approximately 1,200,000,000 cu ft per 24 hr at the maximum load factor probable of attainment in normal operation. The areas supplied by the three lines north and east of the points stated, or assumed as eventual markets, are: 1. Central New York state, from Buffalo to Albany (both inclusive).

Since the days of the infancy of metallurgical industries, slags of various kinds have been accumulating. Until a comparatively recent date hardly any employment had been found for these waste products, which have had, consequently, little or no value. An exception to this rule is the basic Bessemer slag, the value of which has become universally recognized. It is to-day one of the standard fertilizers of the world, and a price of from $15 to $20 a ton is considered reasoiable for the ground slag, which, especially in Germany, finds a ready market as fast as it is prepared. A slight decrease in drilling activity occurred in the oil fields of western Pennsylvania during 1945 and a considerable decrease in the shallow-gas territory (Upper Devonian or higher). The number of deep tests (Middle Devonian or deeper) completed was two less than in 1944 and these did not open any new reserves of natural gas. Thus far, no commercial oil has been encountered in sands below the Upper Devonian in Pennsylvania. Oil production declined 8 per cent.

It is generally conceded as axiomatic that the aggregate producer and the average urban resident have mutually incompatible goals. The producer wants to be near his mass market and the average resident wants him as far away as possible. The traditional economic decision to mine local material to avoid transportation costs is increasingly challenged by zoning and planning bodies and by citizens' groups. This conflict generated much written and spoken word and offered opportunity for great flights of rhetoric. The pressure on the producer also has forced re¬appraisal of the need for the classic confrontation with indications that much of the conflict is more apparent than substantive. In New England several factors combine to increase complexity of the siting problem. It is a region of high land values and population density. Due to the proximity of metropolitan areas, even rural communities have experienced a prolif¬eration of environmental groups with concomitant enthusiastic regional planning and critical watch over land use. In New England where there is little public understanding of the necessity for, and the realities of, mineral production a sophisticated approach to aggregate production site location is required.

Confirmation of the relationship noted above was provided by fitting experimental stress-strain data5 for 304 stainless steel (total strain from 0.072 to 1.15) at room temperature at a true total strain rate of 4 x 10-3 sec-1 to Eqs. [I] and [3]. In this study nonlinear regression analyses were used to evaluate the equation constants. The results of this evaluation are presented in Table I. When these constants are used in Eqs. [I] and [3] the curves obtained are coincident. It will also be noted that the value of n is equal to YE,, the value of a is equal to so, and the value of b is equal to (s8 - so)/Ec. These equalities are illustrated in Table I where the Voce constants in parentheses were calculated from a, b, and n values. Excellent agreement is seen to exist. It is concluded, therefore, that the Voce equation is, indeed, identical to the linear expression involving generalized strain. In applying the generalized strain concept to stress-strain data, it has been noted3 that data within what was termed the transition region (first few points in the plastic flow region) must be excluded from the analysis in order to obtain the linearity in Eq. [3]. A similar exclusion applies in the use of the Voce equation since an expression which would describe the strain-hardening region would usually be found to be not too effective in the elastic-plastic fillet2 which connects the elastic line to the strain-hardening region. These considerations further substantiate that Eqs. [I] and [3] do indeed describe identical behavior. Note added in proof. Since this manuscript was submitted for publication, correspondence with Professor S. R. Davies, University of Edinburgh, (of Ref. 3) indicated that his associates have also confirmed the identity between the Voce equation and the generalized strain concept. It is sometimes desirable to obtain a small grain size in super-purity metals. Unfortunately, the absence of impurities, the low recrystallization temperatures, and the low activation energies for boundary motion result in rapid growth of relatively few grains when conventional recrystallization practices are used. For example, Arajs et al.1 were unable to obtain a mean grain diameter less than about 0.4 mm in iron containing 38 at. ppm of impurity. The <1 at. ppm purity range in many modern superpurity metals results in yet larger limiting grain sizes. It is the purpose of this communication to describe a technique by which mean grain diameters as small as 30 µ have been produced in aluminum having an impurity content < 0.5 at. ppm. The technique should be applicable to superpurity metals other than aluminum and has potential applications to grain refinement of commercial alloys. The necessary and sufficient requirements for production of a small grain size are as follows: a) a large number of potential nucleating sites must be created randomly within the cold worked material, b) sufficient thermal energy must be provided at a rate that will simultaneously activate a large fraction of the potential nuclei, and c) the grain growth must be stopped shortly after grain impingement.&apos; A high density of potential grain nuclei may be cre-

The importance of transverse diffusion on the finger development in a miscible-phase displacement at an adverse mobility ratio of tbree was studied in a porous plate 1/4-in. thick, 3-in. wide and 18-in. long. Fast displacement rates (29 ft/D) and slow rates (1.6 ft/D) were used to determine the effect of residence time on the geometry of the fingers. The shape of the fingers was observed directly by use of the X-ray technique. At fast rates numerous narrow fingers were observed, but at slow rates a single somewhat bulging finger was produced. The amount of material moved transversely by diffusion across the plate was sufficient to modify the finger geometry in the slow-rate run because of the long residence time. These results are in contradiction to some of the postulates in the literature. The composition of the effluent stream, however, was not affected by the flow rate. This result is not inconsistent with the observed change in the shape of the finger in a short model, but it seems likely that a short model does not offer adequate and proper scaling of the reservoir. The model used was probably a valid one for studying the effect of transverse diffusion on the finger geometry, but a longer model would be needed for proper scaling of the effect of the change in the finger shape on the efficiency of displacement as measured by the composition of the effluent stream. INTRODUCTION Fingering can be defined as the uneven advance of the injected phase as it moves into a porous medium displacing the resident phase from the pore spaces of the rock. The use of this term is usually restticted to the situation in which the displacing phase is less viscous or more mobile than the fluid being displaced. Under these conditions, not only are fingers formed, but the length and width of the fingers grow with distance traveled in the porous medium. This subject has become one of great interest to the oil industry because of the present trend toward the use of various forms of miscible-phase displacement to increase oil recovery. Since in nearly all of the known modifications of the miscible-phase displacements an unfavorable mobility ratio exists (the displacing phase has a lower viscosity than that of the crude oil), the conditions are proper for fingering to develop. An appreciable amount of fingering appears to be a severe handicap to these processes for it increases the volume of agent required for the process to be a success, and such an increase puts a severe strain on the economics of the proposed processes. In some cases, such as for a mobility ratio of 200 unfavorable, it has already been demonstrated that the proposed process would not be economic if the fingering in the field were to be of the same magnitude as that observed in the laboratory. A number of aspects of fingering have been studied and reported in the literature. While the phenomenon of fingering cannot be regarded as a completely understood subject, considerable information exists on the effect of the path length and the mobility ratio on the growth of fingers. Less-complete data are available on the effect of the diameter of the flow path on the character and amount of the fingering, and even less agreement in results exists on the effect of rate of flow on the nature of fingering. This paper deals with one aspect of this latter subject. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was narrowed down to one rather specific feature of the behavior of fingers in miscible-phase displacement in porous media. The variable studied was the effect of rate of flow on the nature and the development of fingers. It should be made clear at this point that, while rate was the apparent variable, the real variable was residence time; that is, at low rates the fluids are present at a given spot in the porous medium for a longer time interval than at fast rates. MANY attempts have been made to write a formula by which to calculate the strength of steel from its chemical composition, but most of these endeavors have failed because there were too many disturbing conditions. It is idle to collect from the pages of trade-papers, books, or the proceedings of scientific societies, a multitude of observations. The combination of such results will simply show that steel of the same composition will vary in tensile strength through wide limits-a fact that has been known for generations. That cold-working, overheating, and many another form of heat-treatment alter fundamentally the strength of steel, is ancient history, although it is only recently that the microscope has pointed out the road to an explanation of the phenomena. It may be urged that the microscopic structure must be taken into consideration in any formula giving the ultimate strength, but from the standpoint of the present investigation this is unnecessary. We are trying to determine primarily, not what changes in ultimate strength may be made by variations in the condition of carbon, but what effect is produced by changes in the amount of carbon, when its condition remains constant. For such an inquiry, in order that the condition of the carbon should remain as nearly uniform as possible, it is essential that all test-pieces be made under the same conditions; and it is be¬lieved that the tests described in this paper satisfy that require¬ment. MODERN industry&apos;s incessant demands for increased operating efficiency and lower costs require that hazards attending all occupations be reduced to a minimum. Reduction of the inevitable losses that result from accidents and injury to the worker is one of the important economic problems confronting industry today and is the basis for the widespread safety movement. Dr. Charles E. Munroe, chief explosive chemist of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, is father of the statement, "The existence of a nuisance is evidence of an economic waste." This pointed expression of the internationally recognized scholar and explosives engineer has a direct relation to the prevention of accidents. Every injury and death in industry is a waste in human endeavor and a lessening of productive gain. Dr. Munroe has aptly paraphrased his previous summation with reference to wastes as follows: "A lost-time accident is evidence of an economic waste." That the economic waste entailed by occupational accidents is chargeable to industry is well substantiated by the fact that all but four states (Mississippi, South Carolina, Florida and Arkansas) now have workingmen&apos;s liability and compensation laws.

THE heavy media separation process plays an outstanding role in the concentration of 4000 tons of zinc ore per day at the Mascot mill of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee. Of the total tonnage, 72 pct is treated in the heavy media separation plant to reject 56 pct of the ore as a coarse tailing, which has a ready market. Concentrates from this separation are beneficiated further by jigging and flotation. Approximately 25 pct of the total zinc concentrate production is made in the jig mill. Jig tailings are ground and pumped to the flotation circuit where the balance of the production is made. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flowsheet of the mill. The Mascot ore is a lead-free, honey-colored sphalerite in dolomitic limestone, with lesser amounts of chert and some pyrite. A mineralogical analysis is given in Table I. After 10 years of successful operation with galena medium and treatment of nearly 10,000,000 tons of ore, a decision to convert to ferrosilicon was made early in 1948 because of the increasing price of galena and consequent high operating costs. The conversion was made on Nov. 6, 1948, and the results obtained since that time have shown remarkable improvement over those made with galena. The Table I. For entire life of galena operation, a credit of 40 pct of the value of the new galena added was realized from the sale of waste galena. comparisons given in this report cover the first 6 months of 1950 as representing the ferrosilicon operation, and the year 1947 as representing the galena operation. This was the last full year in which galena was used exclusively and is representative of the best work done during the 10 years of operation with this medium. After only 2 years&apos; operating experience, with ferrosilicon and treatment of 1,807,585 tons many advantages have been revealed and are summarized in Table 11. Development Prior to the introduction of the heavy media process, all the mill feed was crushed through 5/8 in. and treated by jigging. A finished tailing assaying 0.66 pct Zn was made on rougher bull jigs, and cleaner jig tailings were ground for treatment by flotation. The first test work on the sink-and-float method of mineral beneficiation was carried out at Mascot in 1935, using a 3-ft cone and galena medium for batch tests. The following year a 6-ft cone was installed for pilot-plant work. This unit became a part of the mill circuit on March 1, 1936, and handled a gradually increasing tonnage in the next 2 years as the process developed to the point where it could treat all the + 3/8-in. material in the mill feed. Coarse jigging was then discontinued on March 1, 1939, and all coarse tailings have been made by the heavy media separation plant since that time. Feed Preparation: The original feed preparation plant consisted of a drag washer followed by two 4x10-ft Allis-Chalmers washing screens. A surge bin and two additional 5x12-ft AC washing screens were added in 1943. Use of primary and secondary washing screens was found essential to provide the cleanest possible feed for the cone and thereby avoid excessive contamination of the galena medium. Improved washing was obtained by replacing the drag washer with a 7x20-ft Allis-Chalmers scrubber, shown in Fig. 2, which has been in service since May 1944. Throughout the life of the galena operation, delivery of extremely muddy ore to the mill overloaded the medium cleaning system, and it frequently was necessary to cut off the feed and clean the medium for several hours until its normal viscosity had been re-established. IN 1897 I published a proposed explanation t for the variation in color and specific gravity of Pennsylvania oils. A resume of this subject was also presented at the First International Petroleum Congress, in Paris, in 1900. Since that time much experimental work bearing upon this explanation has been carried on by myself, in the United States Geological Survey, and under my direction, by Dr. J. Elliott Gilpin, Marshall P. Cram, and 0. E. Bransky, at the Johns Hopkins University. The experimental results thus accumulated seem to throw considerable additional light upon the variations in color and specific gravity of petroleum, as found in different parts of the world, and also upon the variations in chemical composition. Therefore, it seems as if a, summary of the evidence thus obtained might be of value to those members of the Institute who are interested in the examination of oil-fields. The summary is here presented for that purpose. The phenomenon has often been observed in many oil-fields that oils of different color, specific gravity, and chemical composition may be found within short distances of each other. A conspicuous example of this is the occurrence at Jennings, Welsh, and Anse la Butte, La., of petroleum chemically somewhat similar to Russian petroleum; that is, characterized by the presence of naphthenes. Although the use of gaseous fuel in blast-furnaces has been often proposed, I hope the description of a very simple, yet practical and valuable, application of natural gas to the smelting of lead-ores and residues, at the works of the Pennsylvania Lead Company, will prove interesting. In May, 1886, directly after replacing the use of bituminous coal at the above works by that of natural gas, half-inch pipes from a branch gas-main were inserted directly into the tuyeres of a lead blast-furnace, and through these pipes gas was delivered into the furnace, with the air-blast at a pressure a little more than double that in the tuyere-pipes. At the same time the blast-pressure at the tuyeres was increased by an amount estimated to give a sufficient air-delivery when mixed with the gas-supply. The amount of gas delivered to the furnace is easily regulated by stop-cocks at each tuyere, and is under the immediate control of the furnace manager. Upon the introduction of gas into the tuyeres of the furnace the coke charged at the mouth was reduced 30 per cent., this being the amount of coke which I thought could be advantageously replaced by gas. This first estimate has proved to be very close to the working results, though probably the average gas-consumption corresponds to a little less than 30 per cent. of the former coke used. The proportion that we use varies, with the nature of the furnaceburden, between 20 and 40 per cent. of the total fuel. We have used 60 per cent. of gas; but there is difficulty in keeping a cool furnace-mouth when the proportion is so high. With some residues, notably metallic drosses containing some zinc, we have found it best not to use over 20 per cent. gaseous fuel. The percentage used with ore-charges has generally been higher than that used in smelting the higher-lead charges of residues from our refining works. It results from this use of natural gas that the temperature of the hearth is under almost immediate control, and, for this reason chiefly, a cleaner and more uniform slag can be run, and the furnaceworking can be made more nearly independent of the effects of atmospheric conditions or the variable moisture in the furnace-burden.

IT is very difficult to arrive at exact figures for the cost of maintaining excess capacity of coal mines, but we can approximate the various items. To do this, I will take the Pittsburgh district of Pennsylvania and the other districts can be compared to this one. I believe we can take the depreciation item of plant ac- count as a whole and discount it over a period of 20 years; while this is high for some items it is low for others and I believe it is not far from a safe basis. This equals 5 per cent per year, and this depreciation will take place about as rapidly when not in use as when in operation. A fair value in the Pittsburgh district to- day for plant and houses is close to $4 per ton per annum. At 5 per cent this will equal 20 cents per ton per year. The item of keeping the mine in condition, free from water, etc., will be close to an average of 2y2 cents per ton per annum.

The Institute published a collective index of- Volumes I to XXXV inclusive, which has been very extensively purchased and used by the members of the Institute. It enables one to look, up any subject in the first thirty-five volumes and is useful to those who have the Transactions, as well as to those who have not, because it tells what subjects have been treated and enables one to look these matters up in his own library and then afterward either to procure the individual papers from the Institute at the price of $1 each, or to procure Volumes, or to consult the Trans-actions at a nearby library, if such a one is available. It now seems desirable to publish another collective index, and the Editorial Department, upon the authority of the Board of Directors, has prepared an index of Volumes XXXVI to LV inclusive. This will be sold in the Institute&apos;s standard half morocco binding at a price of $5 and in paper covers at a price of $4. It wilt be ready in a few weeks. Those who already have the first index and purchase the second one, and those who purchase both, will have a complete index of the Transactions from Volumes I to LV inclusive. The Institute will be glad to receive advance orders for this index to insure prompt delivery upon publication.
