With the increasing importance of clay in drilling operations which demand more precise and exacting control over its behavior, there has come the realization that most of our present methods of control over many of its important properties still represent more of an art than a science. Such a situation with respect to a material of such industrial significance is unfortunate, and naturally many investigations have been conducted to improve our knowledge. In general, these investigations have revealed the complex nature of clay behavior and while sometimes they may not have seemed to contribute directly to a solution of the field operator's problems they have been of inestimable importance in bringing to light the broad fundamental scientific principles upon which must be based any effective working theory correlating the known facts of clay behavior and predicting profitable new lines of attack for its improvement. Major Facts Concerning Behavior of Clays In the study of clays, as in that of most other colloidal materials, it has been impossible to make progress by the study of isolated facts. On the other hand, analysis of large groups of facts, many of which seem at first completely unrelated, can lead to a deeper insight into the structure of clays and the mechanism of their behavior. It will be well to list the major facts on which the analysis here presented is based, starting with those that have emerged repeatedly from past investigations and which thereby constitute an impregnable foundation upon which must rest any comprehensive theory of clay behavior: 1. Clays consist of hydrated aluminosilicates of extremely fine and variable particle size. 2. Suspended in water, clays exhibit variable degrees of swelling, depending upon their origin and upon the chemical and colloidal nature of any other substances present. The magnitude of the swelling is a direct indication of the extent to which the clay has become dispersed.

STATISTICAL methods are becoming increasingly important for interpreting routine reports, or for analyzing special test data in industrial plants, such as steel plants. They have already become practically a necessity to the plant metallurgist. A paper by Chancellor,' written in 1933, gives many examples of the benefits the plant metallurgist can derive from the use of these methods. The present paper discusses applications of importance to many others who must analyze reports in the steel plant, as well as other examples of interest to metallurgists. Statistical Methods Logically Suited to Plant Problems.-Statistical methods are not new as a branch of mathematics. Until comparatively recently, however, practical applications were confined mainly to actuarial science,, biology, and economics; fields in which an observed result is obviously influenced (and often determined) by a complicated set of variables more or less constantly tending to affect it. As pointed out by Daeves,2 a decade or more ago, problems in industry are basically similar to those in these other fields in that a given result is at least partly due to that chance combination of causes happening to be present at the time. When trying to do the same thing repeatedly, constant results are never attained; they vary about the desired result with more or less well defined mathematical regularity. Such a condition arises out of the great number of factors tending to affect the final result. If statistical methods are so valuable to the biologist or economist, why then should .they not also be of great value to plant managers and engineers, and to all who must interpret reports from various sources in the industrial plant? Within the last few years, industry has become conscious of this situation, and the use of these methods has been rapidly expanding in such plants. † Many Useful Statistical Devices Available.-Many statistical methods of attack are available for the analysis of plant data. Previous studies1 by the writer dealing with the embrittlement of copper have been concerned with the behavior of various pure and deoxidized coppers when exposed to an oxidation-reduction cycle, and the consequent evaluation of these materials on the basis of their resistance to this action. No attention was devoted to the variations in penetration of embrittlement with time, when these copper materials are exposed to a strong reducing gas, such as hydrogen, nor to the variations in oxygen penetration, with time and temperature, into the "pure" coppers. The cause of the embrittlement is the reduction of the oxygen in the copper by the hot reducing gas, so that a consideration of time, temperature, the occurrence of hydrogen and oxygen must be given. For the purpose of differentiating some of the involved factors, the present work may be divided into two separate series of experiments. The first of these deals with the oxidation of purified coppers under various conditions and then the subjection of these to a standard hydrogen treatment. The second series concerns the reduction, under different conditions, of tough-pitch coppers of several oxygen contents. The resulting data will give the rates of oxidation, and of reduction, for the materials involved. The first series of experiments will reveal how rapidly copper may become oxidized, while the second series will indicate how rapidly embrittlement will penetrate into an oxygen-containing copper when it is exposed to hydrogen at different temperatures. Materials For the purpose of determining these variables, three types of material were selected, to cover the extremes in the ranges of materials commercially obtainable. The first class of materials is represented by an oxygen-free copper, as well as the high-purity vacuum-melted copper2 used in previous work. The kinetics of the dissolution of scheelite in basic solutions of carbonate and fluoride were investigated. Work was also done with solutions of alkali metal chloride, hydroxide, phosphate, and mixtures of phosphate and fluoride. The study was conducted at 90 psig and at temperatures ranging from 100" to 155"C, and both natural and synthetic scheelite single crystals were used. The interaction of scheelite with carbonate solutions generally followed a parabolic rate law, and resulted in the formation of calcite crystals on the attached surface. The transport of the CO3 through the calcite to the scheelite surface was probably rate -controlling between 115" and 135°C. Positive deviations from Parabolic behavior were observed at 100" and 155?C, presumably due to the calcite grain growth, and to the formation of a noncoherent calcite layer, respectively. The leaching of scheelite with alkaline fluoride solution produced a calcium fluoride reaction-product which covered the surface as a sheet-like layer. Below 110°C the dissolution rate was parabolic; at 115" and 135°C it was linear. In the linear region, the periphery of the calcium fluoride layer lifted from the sample. Only the lower layers, braced by the scheelite substratum, remained unbroken. This bound layer, approximately constant in thickness, limited the rate at which the fluoride could attack the scheelite. The phosphate and phosphate-fluoride leaches dissolved scheelite at a linear rate; solid reaction products were respectively hydroxyapatite and fluorapatite. Sodium hydroxide and chloride were not effective leachants, and did not produce observable solid reaction products. THE feasibility of pressure leaching of scheelite pulps with basic solutions containing either carbonate or fluoride ions, as indicated by the following equations, has been established by previous investigators:1-3 200°C CaWO4s + CO37q - CaCO3s+WO4aq [1] 200°C CaWO4s + 2Faq ^ CaF2s+WO4aq [2] It is to be noted that a commercial process employing reaction [I] is in use at Union Carbide's operation near Bishop, Calif. In the earlier work referred to, it was apparent that the precipitation of the solid reaction-product on the scheelite particles sharply reduced contact of the leachant with the scheelite. We have extended this work by studying the kinetics of dissolution employing single crystals of scheelite of known exposed surface area. In addition, the effectiveness of solutions of phosphate, of phosphate with fluoride, and of chloride and hydroxide as leachants for scheelite have been investigated. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. The low-pressure autoclave used in this wo (100 psig maximum) is essentially that of J. Halpern4 as modified by F. A. Forward.5 Constructed entirely of 316 stainless steel, its maximum capacity is 4000 ml. The temperature in the autoclave was regulated to *0.5?C by a Wheelco thermocouple controller. A 4-in. diam, three-bladed impeller, circulated solution upward against the sample, and a strobo-scope permitted holding the stirring rate to *15 rpm. A check valve and a "pop" type safety valve were installed, a sample holder was fixed to an externally adjustable rod, and a water-cooled condenser was placed in series with the sampling valve. The stainless steel sample holder, Fig. 1, held the epoxy-mounted sample (f) five mm above the impeller. Tightening the tapered sleeve (d) positioned the epoxy-resin specimen-mount by forcing it back against the spacer (c). The mount (e) was 1 in. diam. Sample Description and Preparation. Both synthetic and natural scheelite crystals were leached. The former were single crystals of 99.95 pct purity which were leached approximately perpendicular to the "c" axis; they were supplied by the Gallard-Schlesinger Chemical Manufacturing Corp. The natural crystals, supplied by Minerals Unlimited, were transparent, analyzed 99.8 pct CaWO4, and in ultraviolet illumination exhibited the characteristic blue glow of substantially molybdenum-free scheelite. To permit exposure of an essentially constant surface area of scheelite to the leachant, the samples were mounted in Scotchcast Brand Resin No. 250 (Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co.). Several investigators have measured the heat capacity of cementite, using different methods of attack, but the agreement between the values obtained cannot be considered good. Naeserl has made measurements of "average heat capacities" of iron carbide between 1026" and 85" K., using a water calorimeter. His computed true specific heat at 78.1" K. is 11.22 cal. per gram-formula mass, which, if correct, is much too high for any reasonably accurate extrapolation to 0" K. The cementitc used by Naeser was obtained from a steel containing 0.9 per cent carbon, by electrolytically dissolving out the iron in a neutral bath of ferrous chloride. The cementite remained as a coarse, crystalline, gray powder. Andes2 has measured the specific heat of iron carbide, from 102" to 323" K., as it exists in steel. The specific heats of several slugs of steel of known iron carbide content were determined, and the specific heat of the iron carbide (Fe3C) calculated by plotting specific heat versus percentage of carbon, and extrapolating to pure Fe3C (6.7 per cent C). The heat-capacity values for temperatures below 100" K. were obtained by comparing the temperature-specific heat curve for Fe3C to that of Fe. Since the two were very similar in the range examined experimentally and approach more closely at low temperatures, it was assumed that near the absolute zero the form of the curve for Fe3C would be similar to that of Fe. Andes calculates for the entropy of Fe3 C,S298 = 23.55 e.u. The heat of formation of Fe3C has been studied by several workers. Kelley3 has reviewed these measurements and calculations, and selects those of Roth* and Naeser6 as worthy of most consideration. Roth has given AH = 5400 cal. + 30 per cent as a result of his own and other work. Naeser has determined the heat of formation from Fe and different forms of carbon, and for graphite (0) he finds AH = 5600 cal. Kelley accepts the rounded figure AH = 5500 as the heat of formation at 298.1" K., but this value is quite uncertain.

. Only the acute phase of the smelter fume problem is new. The problem itself is older than the Christian era. While both lead and copper were mined and crudely smelted some 3000 years ago, it was not until the Roman occupation of the Iberian . Peninsula and the British Isles, which occurred but shortly before the beginning of the Christian era, that there was any evidence of smelting operations on a scale sufficiently large to permit a fume problem. Around Huelva, Spain, are found more than 30 million tons of slag from lead smelting conducted there by the Romans. Pliny tells US that more than 20,000 slaves were employed in the Iberian mines. Extensive mining and smelting by the Romans in England and Wales were coincident with the Iberian proceedings. These metallurgical operations were upon a sufficiently large scale to produce marked results both upon the surrounding country and the smelter workers, but, as they were those of a conqueror upon conquered soil, conducted by slaves, imperial Rome failed to recognize that such a thing as a smoke problem did or could arise, and whatever fume question there may have been at that time remained a question only to those who had no chance to answer any phase of it. The smelting operations of the Romans extended over about 400 years, and little is recorded of lead and copper smelting from that time until the 16th century. From the revival beginning at this period up to the present century, the growth of smelting has been comparatively gradual. In Great Britain, smelting was conducted almost wholly in localities where metallurgical operations were of paramount importance, and the communities .that grew up in smelter localities were due to and dependent upon the mines and smelters. This fact had much to do with the comparative freedom of British smelting from burdensome fume litigation and legislation. To a lesser degree these conditions applied to the German operations which, when coupled with the further fact that most of the early German operations were to a greater or less degree fiscal workings of Prussia, Saxony and Brunswick-Hanover, accounts for

A recent paper described, by means of stereographic pole figures, the preferred orientations produced by cold-rolling low-carbon steel of automobile-body grade. It was found that the surface of the sheet exhibited a deformation texture significantly different from the texture possessed by the inside of the sheet. Efforts to produce the surface texture by buffing a sample exhibiting the normal or inside texture, using a copper lap, have not been successful. In view of the data collected by Kurdjumow and Sachs2, it was suggested that the surface texture might be the result of partial recrystallization of the normal or inside texture. The recrystallization texture of cold-rolled mild steel was studied by Goss3, but he did not use the pole-figure method, so that his conclusions were in need of verification. For these reasons the work reported in here was undertaken. It had two objectives: (1) to study the general behavior of cold-rolled mild steel on recrystallization below the critical temperature Al, and (2) to attempt experimentally a demonstaration of the genesis suggested above for the surface texture in cold-rolled steel. The material was that used by Gensamer and Mehl, cold-rolled to 97.5 per cent reduction in thickness. Fig. 1 is an X-ray pinhole photo-gram of this material, taken with the beam transmitted perpendicular to the plane of the sheet, using a molybdenum target at 35 kv. with no filter. It is typical of the inside texture, but in it the deformation texture is better developed than in the samples that showed a well developed difference between the inside and surface samples. Specimens from this sheet, which was 0.005 in. thick, were annealed for 5 min. at various temperatures in a lead bath. After about 0.0005 in. had been etched from both surfaces, X-ray photograms were prepared, using the technique described in the earlier paper1. Figs. 2 to 6 are photograms of the annealed sheet, at 566, 571, 577, 580 and 650" C. (1050' to 1202" F.), in order. Fig. 2 shows that 5 min.

Following the development of electrolytic manganese production by the Bureau of Mines, an extensive program was planned to study the character of this high-purity product and its possible utilization in various alloy combinations. Previous work reported in the literature concerning alloys containing substantial amounts of manganese dealt largely with material prepared from relatively impure grades of the metal, and in many instances the impurities thus introduced did not permit true evaluation of manganese as an alloying element. One phase of the Bureau's program included a general review of the system and the establishment of the physical properties of copper-manganese-zinc alloys, using electrolytic manganese, and with particular emphasis directed to compositions within the alpha solid solution area. A number of reports of the work on alloys in this system, giving specific data concerning the equilibrium system and some of its alloys, have already been published. One study' established the alpha solid solution area at various temperature levels and composition ranges up to 50 pct manganese. Other investigation reports presented the properties of selected alloys; namely, a 65 pct copper, I0 pct manganese, 25 pct zinc alloys;1 a sensibly white manganese brass composed of 70 pct copper, 20 pct manganese, 10 pct zinc,3 and a series of alloys with a constant copper content of 60 pct and 5 to 25 pct manganese, balance zinc.4 In these reports tensile properties as influenced by cold-working and subsequent annealing were given in detail. Additional data are now available on other alloys of the alpha region up to 50 pct manganese, and these, together with previously published information, are sufficiently complete to establish the relationship between properties and composition for this portion of the ternary system. The present report is a summary of the tensile properties of wrought alloys in the form of sheet and rod stock. The summary is necessarily limited to data for only one condition of cold-work and a single annealing temperature, since a complete exposition of all the data available would be too extensive for this presentation. Nevertheless, it is possible to make a reasonable approximation of the tensile properties in other conditions of cold-worki"g and annealing by a correlation of the data previously presented on specific alloys and the data given here.

IT is only within the past 10 years that serious attempt appears to have been made to improve rotary drilling fluids by the application of the principles of colloid chemistry, although the use of chemicals to control the rheological properties of clay slips has long been known in the ceramic industry. The main difficulty apparently lay in the lack of a complete analysis of all of the functions of a drilling fluid in the drilling of the well, together with the lack of adequate consideration of how colloid science could be applied to secure these ends, and particularly how apparent antithetical properties of the fluid could be compromised. Thus one analysis1 of the many requirements of a drilling fluid proved conclusively that the viscosity should be low, in order that cuttings and entrained gas might be eliminated effi-ciently in the settling ditch, while the loss in carrying capacity accompanying low viscosity could be regained by increasing either the density of the mud or the upward velocity of the mud stream in the annular space of the well, and the danger of sticking of the drill stem due to rapid settling in case of enforced suspension of drilling operations could be eliminated by enhancing the thixotropic properties of the fluid. The desired properties of the drilling fluid having thus been established, it was a natural step to treat the fluid with vis-cosity-reducing chemicals, such as salts of weak organic acids1,2-for example, sodium tannate or gallate-and to adjust the pH to the alkaline side to such a degree of thixo-tropy as would give low viscosity and low yield point under the conditions of flow prevailing in the settling ditch, but rapid gelation and high yield point when quiescent in the annular space during shut-downs. In fact, flow in the settling ditch should be just short of turbulent while flow in the well, together with the flow of mud past the cuttings, is practically always turbulent. The use of chemicals other than those mentioned, such as Calgon (sodium hexametaphosphate) and certain other phosphates together with sodium tannate, has now become standard practice and it is the consensus that this method of treatment has proved to be an important step in the development of the art of drilling oil wells.

INTRODUCTION Object RATHER large amounts of titanium minerals and some zircon and monazite are being recovered from dune sands about 10 miles west of Jacksonville Beach, Fla. The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines, Southern Experiment Station, has been interested in developing additional large deposits of similar sands in other areas of Florida. The results of a field study have been published1 concerning the sands occurring on Trail Ridge which runs north and south about 30 miles southwest of Jacksonville. This investigation was undertaken in order to identify the opaque titanium minerals occurring in Trail Ridge and because of the economic importance of Florida titanium minerals. Nature of the Problem The minerals present in the heavy fractions (sp gr > 2.94) of the sands are principally opaque minerals; staurolite, zircon, sillimanite, tourmaline, kyanite, rutile, a small amount of corundum, traces of the zinc spinel gahnite and garnet. Epidote, monazite, hornblende and titanite are present in other dune sands but these minerals were not noted in the samples collected on Trail Ridge. All of the minerals except those which are opaque can be readily identified by the usual petrographic methods. However, opaque minerals cannot be examined satisfactorily by transmitted light. Polished sections of the opaque-mineral grains were examined but these sections did not furnish useful information. Consequently, it was necessary to use means other than the usual petrographic methods to identify them. Previous Investigations of Heavy Minerals in Florida Sands Martens2 has described the heavy minerals in the Florida beach sands and has classified the opaque minerals as ilmenite with minor amounts of leucoxene. Miller3 studied a number of sands collected by Ross and Mertie in Florida. He states that the material from the Florida beach and dune sands that commonly has been called ilmenite has essentially the chemical composition of the material that has been called arizonite.4 The X ray diffraction patterns of several samples indicated that the supposed ilmenite is essentially amorphous, with only weak lines corresponding to ilmenite, and hence the material is unlike the type of arizonite from Arizona. Opaque Titanium Minerals Rutile is essentially titanium dioxide. However, as pointed out by Dana,5 important amounts of Fee and Fe3 as well as Cb and Ta are reported in some analyses.

When a new mine is opened, and often when an operating mine must adapt itself to physical or economic changes, a mining system must be selected in complete detail. In the past the plan chosen was usually the product of the local staff alone, however limited the training and experience of that staff might be, which often resulted in the introduction of methods that were familiar to the staff, but not so well suited to the conditions as others unknown to the local men. A new management, noting the difficulties with the existing layout, might make modifications or complete changes, so that many mines in their history have seen a whole series of mining systems, each somewhat laboriously grafted on to its predecessor. This should not be interpreted as a condemnation of the older staffs for sticking to the tried systems, such as open square-sets in the early days at the Homestake, because they knew it would work after a fashion, nor does the statement apply to the technically trained, and usually broadly experienced staffs of most present-day properties. The older miners did not have the variety of tools and methods, nor the present freedom of transfer of information as to what the other man is doing, and so did the best they could under the circumstances. Finally, the higher grade of the ores made the choice less vital. The ever-increasing need to mine low-grade orebodies, with a fixed or even lower price for the metal produced, has caused an increasing need for low-cost mining. In most new mines this has simplified the problem of selection by eliminating from consideration all of the high-cost systems, but it has also complicated the choice by the necessity for refinement in detail and a close adjustment of the plan selected to all the conditions at the property. In these low-cost problems any textbook division of mining systems as applied to "beds, veins or masses" avails little as a guide. It should be realized at the outset that to be successful under modern competitive conditions a system of mining must be worked out with elaborate detail, with careful time scheduling and control of the various elemental operations, and that after it is introduced it must be run with a large amount of technical direction.

It is the object of this paper to oppose unnecessary changes, and the introduction of new and confusing terms. From the earliest times of which we have ally record on the subject, iron has been divided into general classes. Whether iron was first known in the form of wrought iron or of steel, is a matter of no importance; but at the time when cast iron first became a prominent article of commerce, wrought iron and steel were old products— steel, at that time, being generally made from wrought iron by the process of cementation. As steel was then properly defined as iron containing more carbon than wrought iron, so cast iron was appropriately defined as iron containing more carbon than steel. Until the year 1776, when Huntsman first began the manufacture of a new kind of iron by melting wrought iron and steel in crucibles, the above definitions were all that could be desired. At first, probably, owing to imperfect appliances, only a highly carburized iron was melted in crucibles, and this led to its being called cast steel. If our ancestors had found a name for this material not involving the use of the word steel, we would have been saved the trouble of the present discussion. As the arts developed, new uses were found for steel, and the products of the crucible were varied, until at the present day it is quite common to find steel containing no more carbon than average wrought iron, and other steel containing nearly or quite as much carbon as some cast iron. All of these various products of the crucible have retained, or received, the name cast steel, usually abbreviated to the simple word steel, without caus-ing any confusion among producers or consumers in regard to terms or their meaning. In 1865, twenty-one years ago, the Bessemer process was introduced ; this was followed in a few years by the Siemens-Martin process, and the products of both were at once, and have ever since been, called steel, from the fact that they were identical in chemical and physical properties with crucible cast steel. A SHORT time ago I paid a visit to the alluvial gold fields on the tributaries of the Chaudière River in Beauce County, Quebec, in company with A. 0. Dufresne, late manager of the Champs d'Or Rigaud-Veaudreuil, and now Assistant to the Superintendent of Mines of the Province of Quebec. As the conditions under which the gold occurs in this district are not very generally known, and present some interesting features, a brief description of these conditions, and a consideration of the causes which gave rise to them, may be of interest to other mining engineers. During the latter half of last century the country was visited by many mining engineers and geologists, and many references to it may be found in the reports of the Geological Survey of Canada between 1848 and 1911. The most important of these are by J. A. Dresser and J. Keele and the late Robert Chalmers. The Department of Colonization and Mines of the Province of Quebec also published a report with map on the district by J. Obalski. From the earliest times the valley of the Chaudière River formed one of the main avenues of approach to the St. Lawrence in the vicinity of Quebec from the country to the south as far as the seaboard of the States of Maine and Massachusetts. The Indians had a well-known trail along the banks of the stream, and armed troops and foraging parties constantly moved backward and forward along it between Quebec and New England in those insecure times before the ceding of Canada to Great Britain. Even yet the natural advantages of this old military route are recognized, and the government of the -Province of Quebec has now under construction along it a magnificent highway from Quebec to the International Boundary Line, which is to form part of a through highway from that city to Boston; The land along the valley is naturally well suited for agriculture, and about the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries farmers began to go back from the St. Lawrence, and to occupy the higher lands along the upper portions of the Chaudière Valley. This settlement has gone on until now the country is peopled with a prosperous agricultural population.

ALL the ores of any kind whatsoever, even though they be semiminerals and may be perfect in their qualities, have to be recognized by experienced and good sorters. These men must have a detailed as well as a general experience of the metals so that in this first preparation, which is most important, they may know how to distinguish the good from the bad, and to know what is rock and what is ore. They must use patience in this, breaking and cutting and king the ore from the earth. They must separate the good ore from the bad, avoiding as far as possible every occasion for poisoning it by traces of other ores, evil stones, or other things inimical to its nature. Finally, with the judgment of the eye and with tools, and, in the end, by roasting it with fire and then quenching it with water, or by washing and re-washing it, the ore must be made as pure as possible in order to join it better with the companions that seem to be the most beneficial for its needs. Ores would be useless stones without smelting. Therefore, when it is certain that such ores are of divers elemental mixtures, aid must be given to each one according to the evil ingredients [47v] that harm it. But because such evil qualities are things that are often not apparent to the eye, such as too great a burning, or too much earthiness so that when they are alone the fire burns these ores before it melts them, it is necessary to temper them with other materials. Salt, or halite, has a long and most varied history. While we know the Chinese were producing salt as early as 3000 B.C., the first written reference to salt appears in the book of Job recorded about 2250 B.C., which reads: "Can nothing which is unsavory be eaten without salt?" We do not know when man first used or realized that he needed salt. Perhaps one of our early Eolithic ancestors noted a piece of salt shining along the shore of a salt lake or a bay. He may have been attracted by its shining luster and tasted it. He found that it had a tart, zesty, distinctive flavor and perhaps chewing a large piece, became ill. However, by experimentation he soon learned that taken in the proper proportions salt was a very pleasant additive to his food. He may have noticed, too, that it increased his feeling of well-being. Thus, when the curtain of recorded history rises, we find man using salt for his health's sake, seasoning his food with it, feeding it to his animals, and using it in many superstitious and religious ceremonies. These uses, however, are a far cry from the uses for salt today. The first attempts of white man to make salt in continental United States were reported in the year 1614, while the first commercial production was in 1753 from the Kanawha licks. Practically all this salt was for human consumption, preserving food, and curing hides. Prior to the coming of the white man, Indians are known to have made salt from salt springs such as those that existed at Avery Island, LA, Charleston, WV, Saltville, VA, and Onondaga, NY. In 1862 the first rock salt was mined in the US from the Avery Island salt dome. Almost immediately thereafter, rock salt was mined at Saltville, VA and then at Retsof, NY in 1885. Of the more than 39 million tons produced annually in the United States, about 58% or 23 million tons are consumed by the chemical industry in the production of chlorine, caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, sodium metal, and some 30 other basic chemicals. These basic chemicals, in turn, are used in the preparation of approximately 14,000 chemicals which range from soap and detergents, to such chlorinated hydrocarbons as DDT, BHC, carbon tetrachloride, etc. Utilization of cavities created in salt beds and domes has grown rapidly since 1947 until now the waste salt is creating an ecological problem. The uses for both dry- and solution-mined cavities range from the storage of liquid hydrocarbons to containerized storage of toxic wastes, from compressed air for the peak shaving of power to storage of nuclear wastes. Geology Mineralogy Properties: Because of its simple structure, halite, the mineralogical name for salt, was the first structure to be analyzed by X-rays. Ther?nal, X-ray, metallographic, and vapor pressure data were obtained to establish the phase diagram and standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds in the Sw-Zn system. Four compounds, SmZn, SmZn2 , SmZn4.s, and SmZn8.5, melt congruently at 960°, 94Z°, 908°, and 940°C, respectively. The cornpounds SlnZns, Sm3Znll, and SnzZn7.3 undergo peritectic decomposition at 855", 870°, and 890C, respectively. Another compound of uncertain stoichiometry, SmZn11, undergoes peritectic decomposition at 760°C. Four entectics were observed with the following compositions in weight percent zinc and eutectic tenzperatures in degrees Centigrade: 12 pct, 680°C; 36 pct, 890°C; 58 pct, 850°C; and 72 pct, 900°C. An allotropic transformation and a composition range were observed for the SmZnz compound. The transfor)nation varies from 905" to 865°C as the zinc content increases from 16.0 to 48.5 wt pct, respectively. The free energy of formation of the compounds at 50PC varies between -15.9 kcal per mole for SmZn to -51.1 kcal per mole for SmZn,.,. Corresponding enthalpies vary between -19.2 to -78.3 kcal per mole. The ther-modynamic properties for the liquid alloys are described by the relations: A search of the literature revealed very little information on the Sm-Zn system. Chao et al.&apos; as well as Iandelli and palenzonai have reported the structure of SmZn to be cubic B2 type and Kuz&apos;ma et al3. have reported the structure of -sm2zn17 to be of the Th2Ni17 type. The purpose of this work was to establish the phase diagram of this system, to determine the zinc vapor pressure over the solid two-phase regions of the SYstem, and to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the compounds. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals used in this investigation were Bunker Hill slab zinc 99.99 wt pct pure and Ames Laboratory samarium. Analysis of the samarium by chemical, spectrographic, and vacuum-fusion methods gave the following average impurities in ppm: Nd, <200; Eu, <100; Gd, <100; Y, <50;Ca, 225; Ta, 400; Mg, 10; Cu, ~50; 0, 175; H, 20; and N, 15. The elements Fe, Si, Cr, Ni, Al, and W were not detected. The samarium was received as sponge metal and was kept under argon except when being cut with shears and when being weighed. Tantalum was found to be a suitable container for alloys with zinc contents up to the Sm2Znl, stoichio-metry. At higher zinc contents the grain boundaries of the tantalum containers were penetrated by the alloy and the containers failed during prolonged annealing. About 25 g of massive zinc and samarium sponge were sealed in tantalum crucibles equipped with thermocouple wells. These crucibles were in turn sealed in stainless-steel jackets. All closures were made by arc welding under an argon atmosphere. The samples were equilibrated in an oscillating furnace and in some cases were given various heat treatments in a soaking furnace. After appropriate heat treatment the steel jackets were removed and the alloy subjected to differential thermal analysis. The apparatus was calibrated against pure zinc and pure copper and found to reproduce the accepted melting points within 1°C. Alloys were subsequently subjected to metallographic examination and those of appropriate compositions were used for X-ray diffraction analysis and for zinc vapor pressure determinations. The vapor pressures were determined by the dewpoint method. Both the differential analysis and dewpoint measuring apparatuses have been described in earlier papers.4, 5 All alloy samples were etched with Nital (0.5 to 3 pct nitric acid in alcohol) except the samarium-rich alloys. These more reactive alloys were electro-polished in a 1 to 6 pct HClO4 in methanol solution at -700c at a potential of 50 v. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Phase Diagram. The results of thermal analysis are indicated by the points on the phase diagram, Fig. 1. Eight compounds and four eutectics were observed. The composition of the compounds and their melting or peritectic temperatures are given on the phase diagram. The four eutectic compositions in wt pct zinc and eutectic temperatures in % are: 12 pct,- 680°C; 36 pct, 890°C; 58 pct, 850°C; and 72 pct, 900°C. The stoichiometry of the most zinc-rich compound is still uncertain, but is very likely either SmZnll or SmZnlz. However, to simplify the presentation which follows it will be referred to as SmZnll. As shown on the phase diagram the phase regions for some of the samarium-rich alloys have not been unambiguously established. A sample of pure samarium was observed to transform at 924°C and to melt at 1074"C, in good agreement with corresponding val-

Studies of the collection of alkali and ammonium halides utilizing vacuum flotation techniques and contact angle measurements show that ionic size controls the flotation of techniquesthese halides with amine salts measurementsas collector. Contact angles of air bubbles on sylvite in saturated brines were withaminemeasured salts asascollector.a function of such variables as collector addition, length of collector chain, and pH of the brine. No contact occurs between halite and an air bubble in brines containing dodecylammonium acetate as collector. LONG-CHAINED aliphatic amine salts have been used for the separation of sylvite (KCl) from halite (NaCl) by flotation.1,2 It is puzzling how these two minerals, which are so similar chemically and crystallographically, can be separated by this method. Gaudin" has postulated that the difference in floatability of halite and sylvite with salts of primary amines depends on ionic size: In the case of amine flotation, the cation would attach itself to the chloride. I have a speculation there, which I cannot prove, that the ammonium group, that is the —NH3 group in the amine, floats potassium chloride because the dimensions of this grour, as it has been measured in other compounds is almost identically the dimensions of the potassium ion, quite different from the sodium ion, and so it fits where potassium had been, in place of it and not attached to it. Apparently, because an aminium ion (RNH3+) is much larger than a sodium ion, it cannot fit into the lattice of halite. Taggart also has speculated that ionic size may control the floatability of sylvite.4 The object of this experimental investigation has been to test this hypothesis and to study what controls the adsorption of cationic collectors at the surface of sylvite. Since collection is to be approached from the viewpoint of ionic size, the ionic radii that are of interest in this work are presented in Table I. The values of the ionic radii of the ions listed in Table I, except NH4+, are those given by Pauling." Several different values for the radius of the ammonium ion have been given, but that of Goldschmidt6 seems to be preferred. The radius of the charged head of a dodecylammonium ion is assumed to be the same as that for the ammonium ion. Little experimental work has been reported in the technical literature concerning the separation of sylvite from halite by flotation. Guyer and Perren studied the separation by flotation of 50 pct binary mixtures of NaCl, KC1, NH,Cl, NaNO3, KNO3, K2SO4, and Na,SO, using either oleic acid or a sodium sul-fonate as collector.&apos; It is possible to measure floatability under actual flotation conditions where all three phases, air- water-mineral, are present by vacuum flotation tests and contact angle measurements.9 Both of these techniques were used in the experimental approach in this paper. Experimental Method and Materials The vacuum flotation tests were run with glass-stoppered pyrex graduated cylinders. Twenty-five ml graduates were used to test the floatability of all salts studied except rubidium and cesium salts. For each test distilled water containing the desired collector concentration was saturated with the salt to be floated. Sufficient salt (—48 mesh) was added to leave about 2 ml of solids in the bottom of the graduate. After the graduate had been agitated several minutes to saturate the solution with air, a vacuum was applied. If the salt were floatable in the collector solution, the gas bubbles attached themselves to the particles, and the particles floated to the surface. In determining the floatability of the expensive Rb and Cs halides, the experiments were run in 10 ml graduates with about 11/2 ml of collector solution initially. Contact angles were measured in the usual manner except that the solutions had to be previously saturated with the mineral to avoid dissolution of the crystal. Solutions for studying contact angles were made by adding the desired amount of collector to a saturated brine, giving the collector concentration in molarity. The mixture was agitated until dissolution of the collector was complete, with the exception of those concentrations greater than about millimolar. At these high concentrations complete dissolution of the collector was impossible. The face of the mineral to be tested was a freshly cleaved crystal of halite or sylvite. The mineral was placed in the brine and conditioned with collector for at least 15 min, which was found to be long enough to obtain a maximum value for the contact angle. The temperature remained constant during each experiment. The experiments were run at 24°C ±2°C. For contact angle measurements, a crystal of halite from Carlsbad, N. M., was used. Several samples of sylvite were used in this work: a crystal of sylvite from Stassfurt, Germany; a crystal from Carlsbad, N. M.; and a crystal of chemically pure potassium chloride. Saturated brines were made from reagent grade chemicals and distilled water.

IN another paper1 the writer has shown that the low permissible maximum fiber stress in a loaded zinc sheet demands a much closer support spacing than is used for steel. The limiting fiber stress in 13-gage (0.032 in.) sheets having a 1-in. depth of corrugation was found to be about 5000 lb. per sq. in. on a 37-in. span under a load of 40 lb. per sq. ft. Corrugated steel sheets are commonly laid with spans varying from 48 to 60 in. In order to increase the span in 13-gage zinc to 54 in. (a common spacing) the metal must be capable of withstanding, under long-continued loading, a maximum fiber stress of about 10,000 lb. per sq. in. This is known to be impossible with unalloyed zinc. In this paper the writer describes a series of experiments leading up to the development of an alloy capable of safely sustaining this fiber stress. The effect of alloying on the slow creep of zinc was studied by means of static tensile tests, accurate determinations of apparent elastic limits and finally by means of loading tests on full-size roof sections. Two industrial buildings roofed with alloyed zinc sheets on spans involving fiber stresses in excess of 10,000 lb. per sq. in. have been under observation for over two years without signs of sagging.
