Mines with exceptionally low-strength roof (UCS <3,500 psi and CMRR <40) are much more likely to struggle with roof falls than other mines. Weak-roof is a particular problem for many room and pillar mines in the Midwestern and Northern Appalachian coal basins. Traditional roof support techniques are often not up to the challenge at these operations. This paper focuses on two mines, one operating in the Upper Freeport seam and the other in the Herrin No. 6 seam. Together, the two mines had more than 300 roof falls during a recent 5 year period. Each has experimented with a variety of roof bolt types and lengths, and with different supplemental supports. Detailed statistical analysis was conducted to determine which support combinations have proven to be most effective. Geology, horizontal stress, and time are also important at both mines. Successful control techniques have included; ? Identifying particularly troublesome lithologic roof units; ? Installing longer and stronger roof bolts; ? Installing supplemental support in intersections, and; ? Limiting the duration that a panel remains open. The lessons learned from these mines, and others like them, could help improve ground control safety for the entire U.S. mining industry.

Wood cribs have been the dominant form of supplemental support in coal mining for many years. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in prop supports as a replacement for wood cribbing due to the increasing cost of mine timber and engineering advancements in prop design to improve their stability and yield capability. Prop supports generally consume less material, can be installed in less time with less labor, and provide less restriction to mine ventilation than wood crib supports. Several prop supports are now available or under development&apos;. These include: (1) Strata Products Propsetter? Support System; (2) Heintzmann ACS and Super Prop; (3) MBK-Hydraulik MEGA prop; (4) Advanced Mining Technology Inc. (AMTI) BTS Mortar prop; (5) Dywidag Coal Post; (6) Western Support Systems YIPPI support; and (7) "The Can" support by Burrell Mining Products. A comparison of the performance and cost of these support systems to wood cribs is made to provide mine operators with information needed to assess their application potential. Examples of current underground installations are discussed. Included in this assessment are full scale tests of these supports conducted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines&apos; Mine Roof Simulator.

In surface electrical exploration the high resolution earth resistivity method (HRRM) is a very effective method for detecting abandoned drift mines workings. When the abandoned mines are more than 500 ft (150 m) deep, its detection capability reduces greatly and requires more effort to implement. In Yan Quan coal mine, Shanxi province, we tried to adapt this method for underground application. Two survey lines were designed with the spacing of current and potential poles 20 m and 10 m, respectively and measuring points at 2m. The measurement radius of I line and I1 line were 140 m and 60 m, respectively, and the infinitely far pole was 1200~2000 m from the survey line. (Note the I and II lines are located on the north and south ribs of main tunnel, respectively). The survey results showed that abandoned workings were located at 25-70m, Survey Line I and at 80-1 10m, Survey line 11. Based on this finding, the longwall panel gateroads and set up entry were properly located thereby providing safe mining of the No. 15 Coal seam. n Australia, the common method of laboratory testing of bolt for load transfer capacity determination is by short encapsulation push testing. Some concerns are raised about the validity of the test methodology, as the method does not reflect on the actual load transfer characteristics of bolt in real field situation. Thus, laboratory testes were carried out to examine the load transfer mechanisms of bolts in both the push and pull conditions. Tests were conducted by shearing a short resin encapsulated bolt out of a cylindrical steel sleeve. Three types of bolts with different surface profile configurations were tested. The study was complemented with numerical simulation of the test methods. Irrespective of bolt type the average shear load and shear stress values were found to be greater in push test, and the displacement at peak shear load was greater in pull test. The average shear stifhess values were greater in push test. The numerical simulation of the bolts provided a clear understanding of the stresses and strains generated by different bolt profiles during both the pull and pull testing process, thus allowing a better appreciation of the load transfer mechanism process.

In the mid 1970&apos;s, American Electric Power significantly expanded its internal coal production. This involved opening several large mines in seams that had never been mined on a large commercial scale before. One of the mines opened was the Martinka No. 1 Mine which is located approximately five miles southeast of Fairmont. The mine was originally designed for room and pillar mining with continuous miners but was later modified to permit the utilization of longwalls and continuous miners for entry development. The coal seam to be mined was the Lower Kittanning which averages fifty-six inches. In order to successfully mine this seam, it required that the mine design recognize the effect caused by the dip of the seam which averages four percent to the Northwest with a maximum of sixteen percent for short distances and a relatively low cover. In fact, seventy-four percent of the reserves have cover of less than four hundred feet. Also, the core hole data indicated that the immediate roof varied from zero to eighteen feet of shale with two to forty-five feet of sandstone overlying the shale.

Mobile Roof Supports (MRS) look similar to a longwall shield on crawler tracks. The MRS units offer a safe, productive method of extracting the 40% to 60% product left normally unrecovered in room and pillar mining. The units feature radio control, self-contained power units, crawler track drive, and a 600 ton yield. Cribbing and setting posts in retreat mining has been a necessary burden to production. The MRS reduces this burden. Long blocks of coal can be developed to further reduce move and tram time, thus increasing production. The MRS units have successful safety records. The workers are removed from the immediate fall area, and we feel back injuries have been reduced by the workers not setting posts. While MRS units have been damaged in falls, the other capital equipment has been unharmed. The MRS product line has undergone normal product improvement and evolution. Product evolution is seen in our development of machines for particular mine requirements. Through the continuing development of the MRS, Fletcher presents the coal industry with a safe, productive method of retreat mining with potential to develop new mining methods.

This paper presents ground control technology associated with a continuous mining operation for mass exploitation of underground coal deposits in the Indian coal mining Industry It shows that competency of roof strata and performances of continuous miners are safer, than other coal mining method as well as productive and economical. Continuous miners keep playing a major role in the underground coal mining industry for their safety and as well as their productivity. Regarding past experiences in Indian coalfields, Chirimiri and Jhanjara mines have achieved exceptional performances, with a potential for over 500,000 tonnes per year. Tandsi mine has difficult roof conditions and does not typically achieve high production and productivity. Even so, the difficult roof conditions have been controlled with modern ?world best practice? roof bolting systems and an output of up to 1,200 tonnes per day has been achieved. It can further be emphasized that if this technology is implemented properly it will bring an unfathomable change to the Indian mining scenario. There are many mines in India that may have potential and economic viability with ground control technology concepts for installing continuous miner systems and beginning mass exploitation of underground coal deposits.

Falconbridge Ltd., a major base metal producer in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario, Canada, identified a need to find a safe and cost effective replacement for welded-wire mesh used to support loose ground during underground nickel mining. Safer and lower operating costs are a must to maintain mine viability in lower base metal price environments. Stringent material strength parameters were put in place to determine if a spray-on liner was acceptable for testing and application trials. Falconbridge Ltd. took a methodical approach to the concept of a spray-on liner as a screen replacement proving the strength characteristics of the liner as a safe, cost effective, and suitable method of supporting ground. Materials testing was undertaken at Laurentian University to further understand the capacity of the material Laboratory and field tests indicated excellent adhesion and good tensile strength. Further, it maintains significant tensile strength even after elongation of over 25%. Compact, hydraulic mixing and spraying equipment have been developed and successfully utilized in the Fraser Mine of Falconbridge&apos;s Sudbury Operations Currently the Tekflex material has been approved as a wire-mesh replacement and is undergoing full-scale production trials in selected locations at Fraser Mine.

To drive and utilise gate roads economically requires accurate planning and risk assessment considering the variable geomechanical requirements. The geomechanical part of roadway planning is secured by geotechnical investigations of drill cores and geophysical borehole logging. The rock specific parameters determined in this way allow a statement about the quality (defomtation and strength characteristics) of the rock that has to be cut across. They set up the basis for a standardised rock assessment. Combined with the prevailing rock mechanical situation, technical boundary conditions for advance and support techniques can be identified already in the planning phase. Detailed geotechnical investigations prior to the planning and driving of roadways can lead to a technically and economically optimised roof support system. Geotechnical core logging and a standardised assessment scheme based on the data acquired will be introduced. Geophysical borehole logging methods provide additional physical data. Different methods and their validity, which may lead to a further improvement of the planning reliability, will also be presented. Based on the underground measurements, physical model test of simulated materials in the laboratory and finite element analysis, this paper demonstrates the pattern and process of roof fall over the tip-to-face area in the fully mechanized coalfaces. The main factors that affect the stability of the immediate roof are thoroughly studied including the fracture position and tilt angle of the main roof, the tensile strength (Rt) and cohesive force (c) of the immediate roof, and type and resistance of the powered support. Based on these factors, this paper proposes the basic process of immediate roof breakage a. follows: As the longwall farm advances, the main roof breaks and then rotates. A tensile fracture zone will be formed in the immediate roof under the fracture line of the main roof. A caving zone (plastic zone) will be formed in unsupported area between coalface and canopy tip. If these two zones overlap the immediate roof will be completely unstable. Under this condition, powered support will have difficulties lo control the rod. Therefore it is necessary to study the process of immediate roof breakage and look for effective methods for controlling the roof.

Finite element models were developed to study the effect of tensioned and fully-grouted bolts on the stability of the mine opening in a three-entry development system using a typical geological column for the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. The models were used to study the effect of each bolt type on the stress distribution in the immediate roof, yield zone development and the vertical deformations. Comparison of all of those features show that the effect of a tensioned bolt on the stress distribution in the immediate roof is restricted to limited areas, whereas the fully-grouted bolt has a much wider effect on the stress distribution. Both types of bolts can reduce the yielding and deformation in the immediate roof to different degrees. The fully-grouted bolt reduces the sliding along the bedding plane more than the tensioned bolt. Both types of bolts were able to maintain the bedding planes without separation. The induced forces in both types of bolts are analyzed. A rapid increase in the shear force and bending moment occurred in the fully¬grouted bolt due to the relative motion of bedding planes.

Current research in longwall mining in CSIRO Exploration & Mining is focused within five major projects and several minor projects. The major projects are: 1 3D Aspects of Longwall Geomechanics. This was reported to the conference last year and a final report will be available by mid-2001. 2 Mine Gas Control. This just completed project centred on Dartbrook Colliery which has a longwall gas make of more than 8 cubic metres per second. 3 Rapid Roadway Development This includes the construction of an autonomous conveying and bolting module (ACBM) that sits between the miner and haulage system. 4 Top Coal Caving In conjunction with the YanKuang group in China, CSIRO and the University of NSW are conducting a prefeasibility study of the Top Coal Caving method in Australian conditions. 5 Longwall Automation. In partnership with the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE), the CSIRO has conducted a scoping study on this issue and will commence an initial three-year demonstration project in July this year. This paper describes these protects in more detail with particular focus on the last three in the above list.

Using 3D numerical modeling as a tool to predict rock behavior during mining extraction is still an uncommon practice at many underground operations. This paper will discuss how 3D numerical models were used to identify potential underground instability problems in the later stages of mining. Detailed modeling was then used to make modifications to the mine design in order to minimize the impact of the potential instability problems. This paper will also discusses how the back analysis of a previous underground collapse event at the same mine in a room and pillar area was used to identify the instability problems for a new orebody being developed deeper in the mine. A 3D numerical model was first created in the MAP3D software to determine the conditions of the pillars and the magnitude of the vertical displacement above the mining zone prior to the underground collapse. The results from the ground collapse model were then used as a threshold limit for predicting potential instabilities and developing a model for the new mining zone. sing the results from this analysis, mine management has been able to implement a much higher percentage recovery of the reserve in a new, high-grade area of the orebody while minimizing potential instabilities in the future.

An analysis of the Roof Falls Data Base (RFDB) for underground coal mines in Illinois for the period 2004?2008 indicated that about 80% of the roof falls occur at intersections and are associated with geologic anomalies or a rapidly changing geologic environment. Most falls are associated with anomalies such as clay dikes, differential compaction faults, shear zones, joints and fractures, and geologic structure. Therefore, a better analysis of the geology with emphasis on mapping anomalies such as joints and fractures and their application is necessary to improve ground conditions and safety. Such studies within Illinois Coal Basin are limited. This paper presents a mapping study of the joint orientations with documentation of dip of the several lithological units that lie directly above the Herrin No. 6 Coal seam around southern Illinois. These units include the Energy Shale, Anna Shale, and Brereton Limestone. The mapping was done in three mines and the data were plotted on a stereographic projection to determine the average characteristics of joint planes. The study mines included two deep underground mines and one shallow highwall mine. This study has helped identify favorable mining and support orientations in areas of highly variable geology. These are currently under review by the cooperating coal company for experimental roof control studies.

The stability in longwall faces depends on the interaction beman the roof strata, face supports and floor strata. The load distribution on the other hand, depends upon relative stiffness of the three supporting elements namely, the coal face, support and gob. Therefore, in defining support requirements, it is particularly important to analyze the strata loading, the face convergence and the controlling mechanism provided by supports. The controlling mechanism however, depends on the type and characteristics of supports used in long- wall faces. The design guidelines presented in this paper have bean developed based on a number of strata control oriented projects carried out in Turkey, load and convergence measurements carried out in 10 longwall faces, in Zonguldak Coal Region, and procedures given in literature. Evaluation of load and convergence measurements, and analyses of face supports were carried out by means of a computer program, called L0NGWAI.L-MEW, developed by the authors. The output of the design analyses include the following: (1) estimation of support capacity for roof supports namely; individual hydraulic props, chock-type power supports and various types of shield supports, and (2) analysis of loading conditions and response of shield support components in terms of stability and structural integrity.

Measurement of pressure distribution under the base plate of the Hemscheidt 2-leg 800-ton shield was performed underground for two shifts using 12 pressure cells installed in two rows, one each under each split base plate. Pressure distribution was uneven depending on contact condition. In general the highest base pressure occurred at 1/3 of the base plate contact length from the rear edge. The resultant was near vertical, and the pressure under the tail side split base plate was always higher than the head side. For comparison, pressure distribution on the canopy and under the base plate was also measured under controlled conditions at the USBM&apos;s Mine Simulator Testing Facilities in Pittsburgh, PA. A total of 45 tests were conducted under several simulated contact conditions. The results showed that the actual contact area is highly dependent on the compliance of the immediate roof and floor due to the sloped canopy tip and a base lifting device under the base tip. The loading distribution tends to change in magnitude and profile as the leg pressure increases. The base lifting device exaggerates the high toe loading on the base plate characteristics of this type of shield support. This paper describes in detail the testing methods, data analysis results obtained, and recommended changes.

This paper presents the results of a case study conducted in a two-entry gateroad in a coal mine where excessive roof deformation and bolt loading resulted in failure of many roof supports. The instruments consisted of 16 fully grouted, strain gaged resin bolts, load cells on both full and partially grouted cable bolts, and vertical deflection multipoint extensometers. These instruments were installed on-cycle to measure loading on bolts in an existing support pattern and to determine if cable bolts could be used to improve roof stability. Results showed significant amounts of movement within the bolted zone. In sonic cases, these movements were enough to load the supports past their ultimate strength. Geology appeared to be a significant factor in localized roof degradation; that is, a very weak rock layer in the immediate roof overlain by a very strong rock layer contributed to the development of shear planes. Only one instrumented bolt had a maximum strain of less than 2,000 microstrain, which was the yield point of the steel. The average maximum strain on all bolts was 20.000 microstrain. However, electrical continuity to many gages was lost, and a pattern was noted that would indicate possible bolt failure. Wire mesh and concrete cans installed as secondary support performed very effectively.

Mining in situations where there exists a potential hazard from inundation has always existed in coal mining, and often reserves were left unmined in favor of reserves with no such hazard. However, increased pressure on expanding the minable reserves and on producing low-sulfur coal, has made mining under water hazards necessary in many parts of the world. Recent joint efforts by the authors to develop case-history data bases of mining under water hazards has allowed the bringing together of Chinese and United States experience and guidelines for such mining. In China, mining under water hazards has been successfully accomplished for a number of years, allowing the development of a good data base from which to draw guidelines. In the United States, much more limited experience, and the longer delay in adopting longwall mining compared to the rest of the world, has forced reliance on a more limited data base and European experience. In the United States (and Canada), the data base is continuing to increase as more operations start-up. Developing a generally-applicable set of guidelines for international use, based upon extensive Chinese and other experience, appears feasible. The Chinese and United States experiences are detailed by case histories.

Pillar recovery continues to be a significant ground control hazard. During the past decade, 10 miners were killed during pillar extraction operations in southern West Virginia. Studies conducted during the past decade have identified a number of "risk factors" that can be used to evaluate pillar extraction plans: Cut sequence Final stump Timber or Mobile Roof Supports Roof bolting Intersection span Depth of cover Roof quality Age of workings For each of these factors, rock mechanics science suggests which alternative would be expected to be more risky. For example, numerical models were used to evaluate different cut sequences, and indicated that less roof convergence occurred with the outside lift method than with the Christmas tree in the particular environment simulated. For many of the risk factors, accident statistics confirm the science. One finding was that currently almost 70% of the retreat coal in southern WV is being mined with MRS. In contrast, timber supports were used in 70% of the past decade&apos;s pillaring fatalities. This paper discusses each of the risk factors in turn, presents the relevant accident statistics, and shows how the risk factors can be combined to estimate the overall hazard. It also addresses the use of pillar design to minimize the risk of global stability hazards including squeezes. massive collapses, and bumps.

BETTER ROOF SUPPORT During the last decade, resin-grouted roof bolts have taken a substantial foothold in the coal mining industry - now accounting for about one-third of all bolts installed annually, due to the improved roof support. However, the high cost, toxicity and flammability of the resin cartridges appear to be a limiting factor in even greater use of such bolts. Terra Tek, Inc. has, over the past few years, been developing a novel roof bolting system to mix/inject a very fast-setting and high strength inorganic cement into bolt holes and install point-anchored or full-column grouted rebars - all automatically and at substantial cost savings. This grouting system utilizes a unique method to mix the grout ?in-the-hole?. It has been integrated with a conventional bolter, retrofitted with an indexing-head mechanism and an on-board pneumatic computer to sequence and Control the drilling, grouting and bolting. Cycle times are the same or better than for a resin system. Following laboratory testing/development, the prototype system has undergone field trials in a Utah coal mine. A description of the bolting system, results of pull-tests in the laboratory and field, and economics and productivity gains with this system in comparison to a conventional resin-cartridge bolting method are presented. The relationship of this technique to improved roof control is also discussed.
