"Bimodal lithostratigrafic assemblages are of significance in volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS)-hosted lithology. The largest deposits are either bimodal-siliciclastic or maficsiliciclastic, and the presence of a significant siliciclastic component in the host stratigraphic succession favors large VMS deposits (e.g., Franklin et al., 2005; Barrie and Hannington, 1999). In the case of modern sub-seafloor VMS deposits in arc-related settings, the majority of deposits have been discovered in association with calderas or cauldrons (Halbach et al., 1993; Ishibashi and Urabe, 1995; Iizasa et al., 1999). These features are formed by the explosive eruption of silicic volcanoes, so that silicic host rocks and/or pumiceous volcanic clasts are generally observed around the ore deposits (e.g., Binns and Scott, 1993; Fiske et al., 2001). Caldera-like and graben-like morphological features therefore attract attention in geophysical surveys. However, silicic lithologies (dacite and rhyolite) normally contain only small amount of metallic elements (e.g., a few ppm to a few dozen ppm of Cu), whereas mafic rocks, such as basalts and basaltic andesites, contain significant amounts of metals (e.g., a few hundred ppm of Cu). Thus, the origin of metallic elements in VMS deposits associate with the silicic host rock remains unclear.The Iheya North Knoll is a volcanic complex in the middle of the Okinawa Trough. It is located in a young and actively spreading back-arc basin that extends for 1200 km behind the Ryukyu arc-trench system (Lee et al., 1980; Letouzey and Kimura, 1986). Several active hydrothermal fields have been recognized in the Iheya North Knoll. Mineralization at the Iheya North Knoll is characterized by relatively juvenile features consisting of VMS deposits with associated hydrothermal alterations to various degrees. Massive sphaleriterich sulfides at this site, recovered for the first time from beneath an active seafloor hydrothermal system, strongly resemble the black ore of the Kuroko deposits of the Miocene age in Japan (Takai et al., 2011). From February 11 to March 17, 2016, the SIP CK16-01 (Exp. 908) D/V Chikyu cruise was conducted at Iheya North Knoll and the rifting center of the Iheya Minor Ridge area, middle Okinawa Trough. The Iheya Minor Ridge area is also an active hydrothermal field, located ~30 km southeast of the Iheya North Knoll. In this area, basaltic rocks are widely distributed, and drilling has confirmed that the basaltic materials continue to ~120 m below the seafloor (Kumagai et al., in prep)."

The situation in the raw material market has brought into consideration the commercial exploitation of the mineral deposits on the deep sea bed and in particular the manganese nodules. They occur generally in depths of 4000-5000 m, partially covered or buried in bottom sediments. The deposits and their potential recovery have been intensively explored and researched during the past twenty years (Bischoff 1979, Halbach 1988, Padan 1990). Although the present market situation limits the rentability of deep sea mining on an industrial scale, the mining technology is being further developed in many countries. The stagnation phase in the deep mining issue allows sufficient time for conducting research on the precautionary protection of the deep sea environment and for consultation in the development of technologies with the least possible impact on it. The subject has gained in importance since autumn 1994, when the United Nations International Law of the Sea was signed. This also regulates human activities in international waters from the environmental point of view. As fields tests have shown in the past, even with the most modern technologies, mining of the manganese nodules will inevitably be accompanied by a resuspension of some bottom sediments. The generated sediment plumes will be further transported with the ocean currents and in the worst case form stable turbidity layers in different depths (Ozturgut 1981a, Baturin 1991). One of the problems of the environmental impact assessment is the estimation of the plume persistence before it eventually dilutes to approximately the ambient concentration level or settles at the bottom (Lavelle 1981a, Lavelle 1981b, Lavelle 1982, Thiel 1991a, Thiel 1991b). The aim of the research is to develop a numerical sediment transport model in connection with potential manganese nodule mining in a reference area located in the southeastern equatorial Pacific Ocean off Peru (Peru Basin, Discol Experimental Area). In this region, a German mining claim is registered and interdisciplinary field works of the TUSCH (German: TiefseeUmweltSCHutz, deep sea environmental protection) research group are carried out in order to obtain the required scientific background for evaluating of the deep sea mining impacts and to provide the necessary supporting data for the modelling (Thiel 1991a, Thiel 1991h).

INTRODUCTION Airlift pumping, utilize compressed air that is injected at the bottom of a vertical pipe submerged in the water, reduces the mixture density inside the pipe and lifts the liquid or mixture of liquid and solids. This type of pumping technology, which is simple and without moving parts submerged in water, which provides several advantages compared to the mechanical pumping. Airlift is used in various difficult pumping applications such as transport of fluids corrosive to metals, explosives, nuclear and toxic materials in chemical industries, diamond mining and coal transport. Application of airlift to deep sea mining conditions was investigated by extensive laboratory experiments [1], theoretical analysis [2], and limited proof of concept field studies [3] starting in 1970’s with the discovery of huge amounts of manganese nodules discovered on the seabed at a depth of ranging from 4000 to 6000 m . Even after extensive investigations over the last five decades, there exists no commercial application of airlift technology for lifting of minerals. The major problems with the application airlift for deep ocean mining was (a) lack of control over the expansion of the injected gas, which increases the velocity in upper part of the riser pipe (b) lower efficiency compared to mechanical pumping [3]. Different flow regimes are encountered in airlift pumping: bubble, slug, churn and annular flow. Annular flow regime is the least efficient in lifting of particles and churn flow has better efficiency [3].

This paper provides certain Southeastern coal-burning utilities with an economic strategy for complying with the sulfur dioxide emission standards set firth by the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The strategy takes advantage of the occurrence of vast quantities of manganese nodules on the Blake Plateau offshore Georgia and the Carolinas, a commodity which as been proven to be a highly effective dry sorbent of sulfur dioxide. Using existing technology, manganese nodules could be mined and transported via barge directly to power plant sites, where they would be used as filter material for cleaning sulfur dioxide from the effluents of coal-fired power plants. Completely sulfated filter material could be treated for the extraction of by-product metals such as cobalt, copper, nickel, and manganese. The strategy may well be enhanced by the occurrence of ore grade phosphate rock in the same area of the Blake Plateau. This phosphate rock could be simultaneously mined to effect a reduction in production costs if it is found to be suitable for use as either a direct application fertilizer or as an acidulated superphosphate fertilizer. The manganese nodule-based strategy offers a retrofitting solution for existing power plants that would minimize the capital costs for compliance with the Clean Air Act Amendments and has the added advantage of providing a number of other metal or fertilizer by-products.

Massive sulfides discovered in 1991 and further explored in 1993 in the eastern Manus back-arc basin, north of Papua New Guinea, represent one of the few modem seafloor occurrences known to he associated solely with highly siliceous volcanic rocks. As such they are very close analogs of ancient volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) ore deposits, and hence an excellent natural laboratory for developing new approaches for land-based VMS exploration. The Manus Basin lies between the active New Britain subduction zone and volcanic arc to its south and the opposed inactive Manus subduction trench to its north. It is being extended in a complex pattern of short neovolcanic zones and oblique transform faults. In its western sector, relatively mature back-arc spreading has created predominantly basaltic segments with characteristics and mineralization generally similar to those of mid- ocean ridges. At its far east, however, the basin is distinctly immature. The East Manus Volcanic Zone lies between two members of the Manus transform set, and is an en-echelon series of neovolcanic edifices constructed on extensionally thinned island arc crust formed during the earlier manus subduction episode. Individual edifices range from predominantly basaltic to predominantly dacitic in composition. Two of the edifices are known to be hydrothermally active, and a particulate plume with unknown source occurs in the seawater column above a third.

Although, mining of minerals such as polymetallic nodules and sulphides from the deep sea floor has been delayed due to the combination of factors such as current availability of Cu, Ni, Co, Mn (and other metals) on land and their fluctuating prices; these deposits are still considered as the alternative source for metals in the 21st century. Exclusive rights for exploration in the ?Area? (beyond the national jurisdictions of any country) given to eight countries and consortia by the International Seabed Authority and the estimated resource of 300 million tonnes in a typical area of 75,000 km2 is expected to yield about $17.5 billion (at December 2008 metal prices) in 20 years life span of a single nodule mine-site. In order to recover 3 million tonnes of nodules, an area of 300 sq km only will be mined annually (i.e. <1 km2/day) for an optimum abundance of 10 kg/m2. However, during mining, large quantity (22 tonnes/day) of sediments associated with nodules would be resuspended that could lead to certain environmental impacts on the benthic ecosystem. Several small-scale benthic impact experiments in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, have given some insight into the possible environmental impacts and the restoration processes, but the possibility of extrapolating these findings to a commercial mining scale remains an issue to be considered. An estimated capital expenditure of $1.05 billion and operating expenditure of $4.2 billion for a single deep-sea mining venture will have to be weighed against the availability of mineral ores on land as well as the metal prices in the world market. None-the-less, development of technologies for mining and metallurgical processing, as well as formulation of regulations and guidelines for potential ?contractors? to mine these minerals have been progressing consistently. These coupled with recent efforts by certain ?entrepreneurs? to initiate mining of seafloor massive sulphides in the EEZ of certain countries, indicate the continuing interest and support the perception that such deposits could well be the future sources of metals. This paper analyzes the current status and discusses the economic, environmental, and technical issues that need to be addressed for sustainable development of deep-sea minerals.

Diamond mega-placers, in order to rank amongst the primary diamond deposits, are defined as => 70 m carats at =>95% gem quality. There is only one mega-placer known and that is found along the coast of southwestern Africa fringing the Kaapvaal craton. Placers are classified as residual when they are left on the craton, transient when being eroded into the exit drainage and terminal. Terminal placers, in being the final depositories of diamonds off the craton, have the greatest probability of being a mega-placer and such is the case in the placer deposits near the Orange River mouth, southwestern Africa. There are four main groups of conditions leading to the development of a mega-placer: the craton, the drainage, the nature of the environment at the terminus and the timing. The craton, in its role as the producer of diamonds is significant in respect to its size, diamond-fertility, the degree to which diamonds from successive kimberlite intrusions have been retained there and their availability to the final drainage yielding the mega-placer. Cratons in being buoyant have a tendency to leak diamonds into surrounding basins but in being incompressible often have orogens converge onto them resulting in lost sediment being returned as foreland basin fills. In order to concentrate a bulk of diamonds the drainage basin has to be large with a high proportion of it on the craton. The drainage yielding the mega-placer should ideally not have been preceded by older drainage and other systems that may have robbed the craton of earlier diamonds. The exits of diamonds from the craton need to be few in order to focus on their supply and the drainage network needs to be efficient in order to remove the maximum volume of diamonds off the craton. This efficiency and the focused termination is best achieved by the rejuvenation of a pre-existing drainage network. The drainage should be young enough to yield host sediments friable enough to allow brittle diamonds to be recovered from them.

A shipboard research system capable of operating in waters of up to 2,000 m has been designed and implemented by the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL), University of Hawaii. It uses a remotely-operated ocean bottom survey camera system, ROV, bottom TV grab, the PISCES V submersible, and a submersible emergency recovery system aboard the 225-foot RN KA&apos;IMIKAI-O- KANALOA. All systems are operated from the stern of the KA&apos;IMIKAI with a mounted Caley telearm and articulated A-frame system. The system was designed for multi-purpose use of the telearm for launch and recovery of the PISCES V submersible on a lift recovery line (with or without diver assistance), or night-time operations with an electro-optical cable using either the HURL ocean floor sidescan, or photo and video system operated at 10 m above the ocean floor. The 1.14-inch diameter cable is also used to operate the RCV-150 garage/ROV system. The garage/ROV system has also been designed to act as a submersible rescue system with a submersible lift capability.

Marine mining on the continental shelf was first attempted in 1900 for gold off the beaches of Nome, Alaska. Attempts continued until 1990 with cutter-suction, airlift and bucket-ladder dredges. Offshore Thailand profitable production of tin resulted from clamshell, bucket-ladder and trailing suction hopper dredges. Today in Indonesia numerous bucket-ladder dredges continue to mine tin. Off the coast of Namibia and South Africa nearly a dozen large and medium sized vessels are engaged in diamond production. The obvious risk results from the working environment. Vessels and lives have been lost in the past. At best the availability of mining equipment is reduced. Leaving aside the marketing and financing aspects, otherwise the most important risks are technical. They manifest themselves as diamond production short-falls with obvious financial consequences. Bias and deficiencies in sampling equipment and procedures may result in misleading grade estimates, even serious under-estimation. Inadequate sampling in terms of sample support and density may result in over-optimistic grade determinations, especially if under-sized mining blocks are outlined. Quantitative measurement of the geotechnical characteristics of the sediments to be mined is an essential stage in a feasibility study. Without a full understanding of the bedrock profile and the overlying sediments the ease, completeness and speed of excavation during the mining process cannot be properly estimated. Both historically and at present the greatest negative discrepancies from production estimates result, not from grade shortfalls, but from significantly lower mining rates than thought possible by the operators. The learning curve in marine, production mining is steeper and longer than is generally recognised by newcomers to the industry. Examples are provided from tin, gold and diamond mining experiences.

Coastal and marine aggregate (sand and gravel) mining on US continental shelves is a major activity that supplies industrial and commercial demands for these raw materials. Because Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts contain significant shoreline segments that are in a critical state of erosion, sand-gravel and mixed sediment (sands with a high percentage of silt-plus-clay) deposits are mined in efforts to mitigate land loss. Sandy shores, and to a limited extent gravel coasts, erode by shoreline retreat due to relative sea-level rise and sediment starvation in littoral drift patterns. Mostly gravel shores occur in high latitudes and shorelines often advance seaward due to isostatic rebound following the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum 18,000 YBP). Sandy and fine-grained shores occurring in middle and low latitudes of the conterminous United States are problem coasts that require beach renourishment and reconstruction of barrier islands. Muddy coasts of the Mississippi Delta region are especially problematic because some islands are literally disappearing in response to subsidence. Replacement of sediments lost to the littoral drift system or returned to sedimentary sinks by drowning is thus a critical endeavor that involves annually dredging hundreds of millions of cubic meters of sediments from the continental shelf area. The types of shelf sediments that are amenable to marine mining techniques, their occurrence, and means of detection are highlighted in this paper. Minable Sediments on the Continental Shelf Wide varieties of sedimentary bodies that occur on the continental shelf are amenable to mining for beach renourishment and barrier island (beach-dune-marsh system) reconstruction. Relict terrestrial deposits make up a small but important proportion of shelf sediments that were deposited on coastal plains, now drowned by the post-glacial sea-level rise to form continental shelves. Examples of these deposits include drowned moraines, outwash plains, eskers, and kettles along the northern Atlantic coast in addition to siliciclastics along middle latitude Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts. Special cases include carbonate sequences along tropical costs of Florida and the muddy coasts of deltas, mostly in Louisiana. Specific types of minable deposits thus include shoreface attached sand sheets, dunes, and ridges in addition to offshore inter-reefal sands (between coral reefs in the Florida Reef Tract), bank deposits, and sand waves (ridges) that extend into US territorial waters. Nearshore siliciclastics include ebb-tidal deltas and bars. Drowned river valleys occur along all three US coasts and can be exploited for their fluvial sands if the covering mud sheets are thin.

Hydrothermal sulfides were recovered from the16°50?S triple junction area in the North Fiji Basin, at a water depth of ca. 1900 m. The chimney samples can be divided into three groups according to their major metal contents: 1) type 1 (Fe-Cu-rich), 2) type 2 (Fe-Cu-rich with minor Zn), and 3) type 3 (Zn-rich) chimneys. Type 1 chimneys are mainly composed of chalcopyrite and pyrite, and are enriched in elements commonly precipitated under high temperature conditions (> 300°C), such as Cu, Co, Mo, and Se. Type 3 chimneys consist dominantly of sphalerite and marcasite with traces of pyrite and chalcopyrite, and are enriched in elements commonly associated with low temperature (150 to 250°C), such as Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Ga. Type 2 chimneys show mineralogy similar to that of type 1 chimneys but their metal contents range between type 1 and type 3 samples. Trace element compositions of basaltic rocks indicate that magma generation in the triple junction area was influenced by two different sources: N-MORB and E-MORB. Sulfur and lead isotope patterns of the hydrothermal chimneys show distinct differences between the type 1 and type 3 chimneys. For example, type 1 sulfides are depleted in 34S and have lower Pb isotope ratios compared to type 2 and 3 chimneys. The d34S values (0.4 to 5.6?) of chimney sulfides are typical range of sulfur isotope composition of sediment free mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal system. Type 2 and 3 sulfides show slightly higher d34S values than type 1 sulfides, which can be explained by subsurface boiling of hydrothermal fluids followed by mixing of saline solutions with ambient seawater. Lead isotope compositions of the chimneys indicate that the Pb in type 1 and type 3 chimneys originates from hydrothermal leaching of N-MORB and E-MORB volcanic rocks, respectively. Considering that both these chimneys are located in the same area, our model suggests that type 1 chimneys formed by hydrothermal circulation controlled by an intrusion of N-MORB magma; the fluids were not influenced by boiling during the formation of type 1 chimneys. In contrast, type 3 chimneys are younger and were formed by hydrothermal circulation closely related to E-MORB magma intrusion at shallower depth. The necessary conditions for phase separation of the hydrothermal fluids that formed the type 3 chimneys might result from changed P-T conditions in a shallower high-temperature reaction zone beneath the hydrothermal venting site. Under these conditions the fluid may cross the two-phase boundary for seawater, ensuring subcritical phase separation. The mineralogical and geochemical properties of these chimneys suggest that type 1 and type 3 chimneys were probably black smoker and white smoker, respectively. Type 2 chimneys might be product of low-temperature replacement of type 1 chimneys, which is related to formation of type 3 chimneys.

The Chilean part of the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, situated south of latitude 62o S, is within that country?s Región de Magallanes y Antártica, and separated from the remainder of Chile by the Magellan Strait. In recent geological history several phases of Quaternary age glaciers originating in the Andean and Dawinian Cordilleras eroded assumed primary gold deposits and entrained their related alluvial deposits. Piedmont glaciation extended to the east and south over m0st of the land and beyond the present-day coastline into extensive areas exposed during the resulting lowered relative sea level. During interglacials particulate gold incorporated unevenly in the widespread drift, till and moraines was fluvially released and concentrated into streams and flood gravels. Coastal erosion enriched various beaches with gold. From 1868 onwards Tierra del Fuego hosted a major gold rush whereby early, labour intensive, beach mining eventually developed into inland dredging. But continued mining activity was interrupted and then terminated by several external factors. Most miners, always seeking ?greener pastures?, joined the rush to the new discoveries in the Klondike (1896) and Nome, Alaska (1899). In 1904 the international boundary, established in 1881, became the subject of a major dispute not settled until 1984, The Panama canal?s opening in 1914 turned Tierra del Fuego, previously on the Pacific-Atlantic shipping route, into a remote backwater. World War II brought opposing foreign naval forces to the actual islands where most gold had been taken from the beaches. It also crippled the dredging industry which lost its coal supply and never recovered. Nevertheless, some small scale mining continues to this day.

Germany?s industry heavily depends on the continuous import of mineral commodities such as manganese, copper, nickel, and molybdenum. Due to the strong increase in metal prices since 2002 Germany?s federal geological survey, the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, hereafter called BGR) applied for a license area for the exploration of deep-sea manganese nodules in the Pacific manganese nodule belt between the Clarion and Clipperton fracture zones. A 75,000 km2 covering license area was eventually granted to the BGR by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in 2006. It is separated into two parts: ?W1? (17,000 km2) and ?E1? (58,000 km2; Fig. 1). The BGR obtained initial information on the abundance and grade of nodules in the license area from samples collected during three cruises with R/V Valdivia and one cruise with R/V Sonne between 1976 and 1978 (Rühlemann et al., 2009). Since the accuracy of navigational data obtained during these cruises is outdated and sample coverage is unevenly distributed and sparse in many parts of the license area, BGR has started a new exploration program to investigate the German license area according to the rules, regulations and procedures issued by the ISA for the exploration of Mn nodules in the Area.

The Atlantic Continental Shelf (ACS) of the United States includes about 391,000 km2 extending from the shoreline to the 200-m isobath. It varies in width from a fraction of a kilometer (offshore of southern Florida) to about 150 km (offshore of Cape Cod, MA). The contained volume, of sand and gravel is estimated to be on the order of 3-7 x 1.011 m3. Concentrations of potentially commercially important heavy minerals (HM) exist locally, particularly in high-energy depositional environments (for example in channels, tidal deltas, ridge and swale areas, and submerged former shoreline complexes). Recently completed and ongoing studies of HM assemblages in vibracore samples from the south shore of Long Island Sound, NY, offshore of Ocean City, NJ, offshore of Cape May, NJ, offshore of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, VA, offshore of Myrtle Beach, SC (grab samples), and the ACS offshore of Florida provide the information base for this presentation (Table 1). The surficial sediments of the ACS contain local concentrations of HM that compare favorably to those in currently mined onshore deposits as shown

The new ship-submersible system with R/V Ka&apos;imikai-o-Kanaloa as a mothership and the PISCES V as the submersible completed its first season of dives. The dives involved deployment of the PISCES V in the Hawaiian Islands between the months of July and October 1996. Submersible deployments up to depths of 2,000 meters in sea states up to a high three were made. The new hook and clasp deployment and retrieval connection for PISCES V to the telearm was shown to be an effective system for handling the PISCES V with the A-frame. The shipboard multibeam survey and seawater sampling capability proved to be especially effective in re-mapping the summit of the submarine volcano Loihi following a major volcano-tectonic event and for following the source and configuration of the new hydrothermal plume. Following the earthquake swarm of July 17 to August 18,1996, major changes in the geological setting of Loihi submarine volcano took place. Prior to the seismic event, the geology and structure of the summit of Loihi was represented by a platform-like area 8,100 meters long and 5,400 meters wide enclosed by the 1,200-meter depth contour. The summit was characterized by the presence of two prominent pit craters and eastern and western crater located at water depths of 1,100 and 1,370 meters, respectively. A hydrothermally active volcanic cone, named Pele&apos;s Vents, was located at a depth of 960 at the southern edge of the summit. The floor of the summit of Loihi was largely covered by prismatic talus, with interstitial hydrothermal clays. Pillow and tube lavas with volcanic cones 5 to 50 meters high were exposed along the axes of the southern and northern rift zones. The inner margin of the summit displayed fissures and normal faults with the downthrown component towards the center of the summit. The pre-earthquake structural data suggest a pre-caldera structural stage for Loihi. Maximum sustained hydrothermal activity observed on Loihi over the past 10 years existed at Pele&apos;s Vents with other sporadic venting occurs along the summit platform and along the south rift. Following the earthquake swarm, the hydrothermally saturated Pele&apos;s Vents cone gave way and slid into the inner pit crater. Subsequently, the observed above- bottom hydrothermal plume source deepened from 960 to 1,160 meters, possibly emanating from the same intrusive heat source as Pele&apos;s Vents. The observed inward collapse of the summit structures and subsequent opening of fissures gave rise to diffuse venting from the newly formed caldera-like depression with the bottom-hugging hydrothermal pool located at depth between 1,250 and 1,220 meters at the sites of the pit craters.

Ferromanganese crusts have traditionally been considered a potential ore for Co, whereas ferromanganese nodules have typically been considered a potential ore for Ni and Cu. However, both nodules and crusts sequester high concentrations of many metals (Table 1) from sediment pore waters and seawater, many of which are essential for high-tech applications. The resource potential of these rare and valuable metals is poorly known and they are the subject of considerable current research. The need for adequate and dependable supplies of these metals is essential for the development of new technologies. The rare-earth elements have recently received much attention in the scientific and popular press because of their use in so many high-tech applications and because more than 95% of the production comes from China (e.g., Service 2010); consequently, there is concern about the possibility of a significant decrease or even curtailment in exports from China. The lack of a primary source and the inadequate supply of Te have prohibited the development of a Cd-Te photovoltaic solar-cell industry (Hein et al. 2010). Inadequate supplies of many of the elements listed in Table 1 are limiting the development of key high-tech industries, forcing the use of alternative metals that [ ] may result in less efficiency or less favorable properties for a product. The rare-earth elements, Te, and other elements listed in Table 1 occur in high abundances in marine hydrogenetic and diagenetic ferromanganese deposits. Here, we look at the mechanisms by which these rare and valuable metals are incorporated into different genetic types of marine ferromanganese deposits.

"Co-rich ferromanganese crust deposits exist on slopes, summits and platforms of seamounts and guyots throughout the global oceans, where deep-sea currents have kept the seafloor structures more or less free of sediment for millions of years. They form by direct precipitation from cold seawater under more or less oxic conditions and consist of thin layers (2 up to 25 cm thick) covering hard substrate rocks in water depths of 800 to 5000m (Halbach and Marbler, 2009; Hein et al., 2000). Besides Mn these crusts contain interesting concentrations of minor elements (Co, Ni, Ti and Cu) and trace elements (Mo, W, Te, Ga, Pt and REEs), thus they represent significant metal deposits and promise potentially valuable additions to the world’s metal resources.The prospects for mining of this marine type of metal deposits largely depend on the grades and the scale of the potential ore resources. However, only a few percent of existing seamounts and guyots have been mapped and sampled in detail, most of them in the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, a model to estimate the geological resources based on the global seamount catalogue of Wessel (2001; revised: Wessel et al., 2009) and the empirical parameters which control the metal composition and distribution was developed."

With its new continental shelf beyond the exclusive economic zone, New Zealand is a country with just 4% of its territory above water. The other 96% is submerged. New Zealand&apos;s marine territory covers an area about three-quarters the size of Australia. This territory includes large portions of the Gondwana continent from which NZ separated more than 80 million years ago. This underwater land mass extends from the shores of New Zealand to a water depth of more than 5,000 m, is largely unexplored and is almost certainly the site of many large, untapped oil, gas and mineral deposits. Underwater oil and gas drilling is now a universal activity. Underwater mining is in its infancy and will become a major activity in the future, contributing greatly to the New Zealand economy. New hydrocarbon deposits will undoubtedly be discovered under the ocean floor in regions such as the Great South Basin located off Canterbury and Otago. Mineral deposits are also undoubtedly located within the oceanic crust of this underwater NZ continent. These are as yet unknown and unexplored. The oceanic crust north of the North Island is currently being extended through the subduction of the Pacific plate into the Tonga Kermadec trench and through the growth of a line of submarine volcanoes extending north to Tonga. Active submarine volcanism has led to the growth of ocean floor mineral deposits consisting of polymetallic sulphides with iron, copper, zinc and lesser gold, silver and other metals.

"Significant uncertainty is associated with predicting future trends in deep-sea mining projects, especially when attempting to assess markets for associated products such as ships and collectors. In order to help European Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to appraise the future market share of deep-sea mining equipment, a methodology was developed that allows to assess and predict equipment turnover. This study presents a market analysis, which evaluates the scale of the potential market for deep-sea mining equipment for seafloor manganese nodules (SMnN) and seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) based on six key drivers: (i) the worldwide deposit potential of SMnN and SMS deposits, (ii) the profitability of deep-sea mining projects, (iii) the metal market of seven associated metals (Cu, Zn, Au, Ag, Co, Ni, Mn), (iv) the current legal and environmental situation in the Area, (v) investment and maintenance costs, and (vi) a competitor analysis.Figures for the different key drivers are based on public reports and expert interviews. Large uncertainties as well as contrasting views and expectations resulted in different options (scenarios) for the future development of the deep-sea mining market. Several scenarios were developed and based on the future number of “mining projects” in the short-term (2022-2041) and the long-term (2042-2061). The number of such mining projects has been calculated based on the combined analysis of the different key drivers.In the scope of this study, the definition of a “mining project” is a deep-sea mining operation for SMnN or SMS lasting for 20 years. This operation includes the purchase of a set of deep-sea mining equipment consisting of a mining support vessel, a vertical transport system and the seafloor mining equipment, in line with other work within the EU FP7 project “Blue Mining” (GA No. 604500)."

Marine scientists at the University of Georgia, have in the past few years, designed, developed and refined two geochemical survelliance systems for the exploration of hard mineral resources on the seafloor. The one first developed is an underwater sled which contains a nuclear radiation detector for measuring naturally occurring gamma radiation that is associated either with marine phosphorites containing uranium and its decay daughters or thorium decay products that are indicative of monzanite. The latter can, in most instances, be used as a pathfinder mineral for placer deposits that may contain other heavy minerals of interest such as rutile, ilmenite, chromite, gold, etc. This sled is operational in continental shelf depths. The second system is capable of more definitive measurements in the form of direct elemental analyses of the silt and clay fractions within the surficial sediments. It consists of a towed sled containing a submersible pump which, upon agitating the sediments, transfers the finer fraction up a hose to a shipboard centrifugal cone then to an automated sample processor. The resultant samples are rendered into sediment wafers, suitable for non-destructive XRF analysis. The system is capable of shipboard analysis for specific elements within minutes after sampling, allowing a cursory look upon which an exploration grid can be formulated while on site. A much wider spectrum of up to 40 elements can be evaluated when the wafers are returned to the land based laboratory.
