The design of the economically most profitable and technically most feasible smelter process gas handling .and treatment as an integrated part of the total metallurgical process is discussed and exemplified, with alternative flow sheets including material and energy balances, investment and operating costs. Retrofitting and de-bottlenecking of existing gas handling lines will be described and exemplified. Methods of increasing total gas handling line availability will be described.

This paper describes some aspects about the relationship between copper electrorefining addition reagents and the hydrogen in the cathode. The conditions of electrorefining were studied by factorial design methods. The advantages of this technique are reduction in the number of tests, well organized experiments; improvement in productivity and reliability of results. The dosage of the two main addition agents, glue and thiourea, were varied simultaneously and compared with the hydrogen content in the cathode. The influence of these factors, as well their interactions were analyzed by statistical methods denominated ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). The increase of thiourea quantities, within of levels studied, influenced significantly at 95% confidence in the hydrogen content in copper cathode.

The origin of many casting defects can be traced at the mold filling stage. Entrapped air/gas pockets and oxide film formation are notable examples. In the present work, the mold-filling process is simulated using a mathematical model, built on a multi-physics based commercial package PHYSICA. The simulation code has the capability to solve multi-phase problems. The numerical model addresses a complicated dynamics of filling operation including free surface flow and subsequent flow behavior and is based on conservation of mass and momentum. The Free surface is modeled using the scalar equation method (SEM). The model is validated with benchmark experimental results from the literature. The role of turbulence and the pouring rate on variables affecting sites prone to oxide film formation are investigated using a simple but novel technique. Key findings of the work are presented.

Tests were conducted on C86200 high-strength yellow brass in order to ascertain the effect of a low level of nickel on the mechanical properties on this alloy. A series of two alloys was studied, one of which had a nickel content of 0.85% and the other with <0.05% nickel. Copper and aluminum content ranged from 62.5% to 64% and 3.2% to 4.6%, respectively. When compared by zinc equivalents, a nickel addition of 0.75% in high-strength yellow brass does not act like copper but raises the tensile strength, 0.5% yield strength and BHN while lowering the elongation.

Along the south-west coast of Taiwan is about 550,000 metric tons of heavy sand deposit containing about 10 % black monazite. The Institute has developed a separation process to recover the individual rare earths and the developed process has been commercialized by a local private company. The decomposition of the local black monazite by sodium hydroxide through hydrothermal and fusion methods has been investigated. In the hydrothermal process 4.5 wt. % of aqueous alkali solution was used in an autoclave. In the fusion process, caustic soda (9.8% NaOH) was employed in am open cylindrical reactor. The same product of hydrous rare earth oxides were obtained and then dissolved by hydrochloric acid and the p-H adjusted in order to separate the thorium from the rare earths. After filtration, the filtrate contained rare earth chloride and the cake contained mainly the silica and thorium hydroxide. Both methods give a yield of 90 % with respect to the rare earths recovery. A detailed description of operation and comparison of the two methods are given.

In 1982, Asarco operated six smelters and refineries producing primary copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold. At that time Asarco was still reliant on its custom smelting and refining roots and mined only 25% of its smelting and refining capacity for copper and 10% of its lead smelting and refining capacity. By 1992, Asarco had been reshaped to become largely an integrated primary metal producer operating four smelters and three refineries. Zinc is no longer refined and the mining capacity has been increased to meet 100% of copper smelting and 50% of lead smelting needs. Only one custom smelter is in operation. This paper describes the metallurgical changes and challenges which have occurred in this restructuring of Asarco&apos;s operations while maintaining Asarco&apos;s position as one of the largest non-ferrous metals producers in the world.

"The disposal of Aluminum slag wastes continues to challenge an otherwise environmentally beneficial and highly desirable industry - Aluminum Recycling. Slag wastes contain soluble salts that can be reused in aluminum smelting. Reclaiming salt is a logical first step in eliminating slag waste.Reclaiming salt flux has been conducted on a limited basis in the United States for reasons of economy. Practical methods and rising landfill tipping fees will increase the number of plants which opt to recover salts from slag wastes.The authors share their experiences in the design, operation and startup of a commercial scale flux reclamation plant operated by Tennessee Aluminum Processors at Mt. Copper sulphides Concentrates, from the flotation process of copper primary ore; contain, commonly, small amounts of precious metals, such as gold and silver. During the smelting process of those concentrate all gold and silver are practically in the blister copper, which is cast into anodes. Those copper anodes are electrorefined in an electrolytic system, where the electrolyte is an acid copper sulphate solution, where a high purity electrolytic copper is produced (>999,9/1000). The slime when submitted to an oxidative leaching process, using sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide as oxidizing agents, turn those metals into solution. This research practical work, apart from concentrating effort on the digestion of the anode slime, aims at evaluating the efficiency of the cementation process of the metals of interest for the separation of them to take place. 141

Operation of the Kidd electrolytic zinc plant commenced in 1972 with a cellhouse capacity of 105,000 tonnes of zinc cathode. The original cellhouse layout consisted of 42 parallel rows for a total of 588 cells. As leaching capacity increased, the cellhouse was expanded to 630 cells. Zinc cathode was manually stripped from plant start-up until the development of a mobile automated stripping system in 1994. Machine development continued until a second unit was placed in production in 1996, from which point, 60 % of the cellhouse was being stripped with the automated system. The final phase of the project was implemented in 1999 with the commissioning of two more automated strippers. This paper describes the implementation of the automated stripping system and its impact on cellhouse productivity.

"Linear scan voltarnmetry was used to determine the reactions that occur during the cyanidation of petzite (Ag3AuTe2). Gold oxidation in petzite requires more oxidising conditions than are required for pure gold, it also does not achieve the same current (related to reaction rate). Tellurium oxidation occurs at a similar potential in water and cyanide, but as a component of petzite is impeded somewhat in water, likely due to the stability of the precious metals. Pre-treatment of petzite to oxidise tellurium in the absence of cyanide prior to gold recovery appears to be at least moderately successful.IntroductionWhile gold occurs most prevalently in its native form, many other gold bearing phases appear throughout natural systems [I]. Tellurides are a common group of such minerals, many of which also contain silver, often existing in association with native gold deposits. The six major gold-bearing tellurides are calaverite (AuTe2), sylvanite [(Au, Ag)2Te4], montbrayite [(AuSb)zTe3], krennerite [(Au1-x, Ag,)Te2], petzite (Ag3AuTe2) and muthmannite (AuAgTe2) [2]. While several other phases exist they are much more complex (i .e. buckhornite), which dilutes and confuses the influence of each specific component. Studies of gold tellurides have predominantly focussed on calaverite as it is the simplest and most common phase, however petzite, commonly found in Australia and North America, is the focus of this investigation.Gold processing via cyanidation has been operated for more than a century and is a highly effective hydrometallurgical treatment of native gold deposits. However, some gold alloys such as tellurides have proven to be somewhat less responsive under the same conditions. Several groups have shown that gold/silver tellurides are amenable to cyanidation, but are significantly more refractory than native gold [3]. Pre-oxidation steps have been tested to remove constituents that would consume cyanide such as sulfides. Such species are also linked to the precipitation of oxidised telluriwn, forming a passive layer, further inhibiting gold recovery [2]. It is uncertain to the definite reasons underpinning the refractory nature of precious metal tellurides in conventional cyanidation."

"The mechanical properties of cast iron depend on the graphite morphology and characteristics of metallic matrix. In spheroidal graphite iron these properties are affected by the nodule count, nodule percentage, nodularity, nodules per square mm, nodule types and size distribution. In this work an attempt is made to study of the effect of centrifugal and gravity casting process on the morphology and mechanical properties. A comparison of microstructure and mechanical properties of specimens of the cast are studied. It has been observed that the centrifugal effect produces an increase in rupture strain but hardness is unaffected. In microstructure it has been observed that the centrifugal effect produces an increase in the number of bigger nodules and decrease in the number of smaller nodules and an increase of nodules per square mm. It has no effect on nodularity percentage. The centrifugal casting process produces better mechanical properties.IntroductionCast iron, the first man-made composite, is at least 2500 years old. It remains the most important casting material, with over 70% of the total world tonnage [1,7]. The main reasons for cast irons longevity are its wide range of mechanical and physical properties coupled with its competitive price [l]. Gray cast iron is traditionally used in many industries because it is characterized by a flexibility of use, excellent castability, low cost, wide range of achievable mechanical properties. Gray cast irons are selected according to their tensile strength, high modulus of elasticity, good wear resistance and good machinability are desired and for this a high-strength cast iron is selected [2].Flake Graphite and Spheroidal Graphite irons are predominantly being used to manufacture heavy automobile components throughout the world. The properties of gray iron castings are much dependent on foundry practice. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the family of cast irons is the morphology of the graphite phase, which occurs as a result of changes in chemical composition, melting, melt handling techniques and the process of solidification and subsequent cooling. The significance of these differences through graphite morphology is observed primarily in their effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the iron, but in the foundries these are also known to influence the ability to manufacture sound and dependable castings."

"In recent years, zinc recovery from flue dusts and other industrial wastes has been increased, offering to the market a large tonnage of secondary zinc oxides, which can not be processed directly to render high quality zinc because of the hazardous impurities and halogens content.The ZINCEXTM Technology has been commercially applied for more than thirty years and represents the most suitable solution to deal with secondary or crude zinc oxides due to its flexibility, simplicity, and cost-efficiency, allowing production of SHG electrolytic zinc and pure zinc sulfate salts thanks to the flexibility and selectivity of the zinc solvent extraction unit regarding to get rid of impurities.A dual plant able to produce electrolytic zinc and crystallized zinc sulfate has been engineered to provide a flexible and profitable solution to zinc market. A description of the study and the relevant achievements is presented in this paper.IntroductionZinc is a valuable commodity in the marketplace and can be recycled again and again and still maintain its physical and chemical properties. Zinc recycling offers both environmental and economic benefits such as reducing volumes of material that end up in landfills, saving energy by reducing the need for mining and smelting, and relieving environmental impact on the land and water, and conserving zinc ore [1].The supply of zinc able to be re-processed will be increasing from year to year according to secondary materials enter the recycling stream, and as a result, more recycled zinc will become available in the market. Thus, some existing zinc refineries are implementing an annexed treatment line to process secondary oxides in conjunction with primary zinc concentrates [2].The galvanized steel scrap is normally recycled in electric arc furnaces or in basic oxygen furnaces, which generates a large tonnage of zinc-bearing flue dusts (EAFD). Around one million ton EAFD is yearly produced at the USA and the EU, respectively. The flue dusts are treated commercially by pyrometallurgical ways such as waelz kilns, electrothermic furnaces, etc, to yield secondary zinc oxides that can not be processed directly to render high quality zinc because of the hazardous impurities and halogens content [3]."

"The aim of this research was to carry out a comparative and systematic study of the degradation of cyanide by hybrid natural/biodegradation and biodegradation methods using a mixture of Pseudomonas sp and Bacillus megaterium native bacteria. Bioreactors consist of filled columns with contaminated ore containing 100 ppm of total cyanide. In the biodegradation tests a mixture of bacteria was inoculated into the biodegrading solution. Results of cyanide degradation show a similar asymptotic behavior in both the hybrid (opened system) and biodegradation (closed system) methods; however, for the same period of time (72 h) the permissible maximum levels (1-2 ppm of cyanide) are only attained in the closed system. While in the closed system the cyanide levels are reduced from 100 to 1.5 ppm, in the open system, cyanide decreases from 100 to 2.4 ppm.IntroductionOne of the most important tasks of mining industry is the treatment of the wastes generated in mining operations. Accordingly, industrial waste waters and ores represent a complex problem and a great challenge. In addition to ethic and communitarian considerations, there are laws that prohibit or regulate the contamination of water and air. Moreover, they establish that the restoration of wastes must be considered as a necessary operation cost [1]. Currently this important problem is being addressed by the mining and metallurgical industries using different approaches; mainly they are focusing on the treatment of waste waters and ores generated by the leaching process in which cyanide is used as a leaching agent for the recovery of precious metals as gold and silver. Cyanides have toxic characteristics and thus negatively impact the environment when they are discharged to the ground without previous treatment. While there are some processes in current use there are others that have only been proposed and that allow cyanide degradation, transformation to less toxic compounds and/or the complete elimination of cyanide. The second group includes a variety of techniques that use natural, chemical and biological treatments. Natural treatments consist of the passive abandoning of the heap and of its washing with water. Since these processes are slow and generate great volumes of water partially contaminated, then other alternatives should be considered."

Scrap recycling has become an increasingly important source of metal units for the aluminum industry during the past 25 years. Aluminum scrap from the manufacture and recycling of cans, automobiles, buildings and other products has created an industry that melts these products and delivers the metal in molten or sow form to companies that make cast parts or fabricated products This rapidly developing recycling industry has contributed a large number of severe (Force 3) molten aluminum explosions (25) with associated fatalities (19) to the Aluminum Association data accumulated during the past nineteen years. The explosions that occurred in recyclers plants represent 17% of the total explosions, 33% of the Force 3 explosions and 37% of the fatalities reported. These explosions can be prevented! This paper will identify causes of these explosions and procedures that can be used to prevent them.

The solvent extraction for gold from alkaline cyanide solutions has been investigated using LIX 79 guanidine-based extractant. Different variables that could affect the extraction system were evaluated: equilibrium time, aqueous pH and extractant and modifier concentrations. The extraction isotherms of the aurocyanide complex with respect to other cyanoanions were compared and the following order of selectivity Au>Ag>Cu>Zn>>Fe was observed. From the pH isotherms it was found that aurocyanide can be extracted in alkaline media and a better separation with respect to other cyanoaniones was obtained in the range of 10.5 < pH < 11.2. Better selectivity was observed when using LIX 79 and tridecanol at 10% and 5% vol, respectively. Stripping gold from loaded organic was carried out at pH>12, using NaOH and NaCN solutions.

In order to decrease the voltage required for electrorefining, a recessed electrode cell has been developed in which the anode and cathode have recesses machined into their faces. The anode and cathode plates are separated by a thin refractory cloth and the cell is filled with fused salt. Bismuth containing 10 to 90 % lead with copper and silver as minor impurities has been electrorefmed at a current density of 10,000 to 20,000 Am-2. The cell voltage was between 285 and 635 millivolts and the bismuth was refined to a purity of 99.9 %. Flow patterns were observed in a room temperature model of the recessed channel cell using water and mercury to simulate molten metal and the fused salt electrolyte. The flow in the electrode recesses is characterized by discrete droplets when the liquid flow rate is low and thin streams and rivulets at higher flow rates.
