A massive slide at Bingham Canyon wiped out a side of the pit and covered the main haul road in and out of the pit. All pre-slide mine designs and schedules were no longer valid. New designs and schedules needed to be developed quickly to provide management with information regarding the immediate post-slide production potential and the time needed to ramp back up to full production. At the time of the slide, an effort was already underway to convert Bingham?s in-house Medium Term Scheduling Process to MineSight®?s Schedule Optimizer (MSSO). One of the main reasons for doing this was to reduce the time needed to produce Medium Term Schedules at Bingham, which involves a complex shovel-based scheduling approach with shovel productivities based on shovel type and the types of mining cuts to which the shovel is assigned over each planning period. The objective of the schedule was to maximize shovel usage, satisfy mill feed requirements of four SAG mills with variable milling rates, and have flexibility in setting truck constraints. This paper will describe how the new MSSO-based mine scheduling process met the challenge of producing new schedules for Bingham in a minimal amount of time.

Kaiser Steel Corporation, the pioneer steelmaker on the Pacific Coast, was founded by the late Henry J. Kaiser. In 1944 the Company purchased from the Southern Pacific Railroad an iron ore property 200 miles east of Los Angeles known as Eagle Mountain. Today the domestic operation of Kaiser Steel Corporation consists of the iron mine at Eagle Mountain; two coal mines, one each in Utah and New Mexico; an integrated steelmaking complex at Fontana, California; and several steel fabrication and erection facilities along the west coast. Kaiser Steel also has interest in Hamersley Iron, Ltd., Australia, and Kaiser Resources, Ltd., British Columbia. Eagle Mountain Mine is located about 80 miles east of Palm Springs and adjacent to the southeast corner of Joshua Tree National Monument. The area is one of the most arid in the world averaging only two inches of rain annually. Geologically, the mine is at the western edge of the Basin and Range Province which covers about one-half million square miles of the western United States. The Province is typified by north to northwesterly trending fault block mountain ranges separated by sediment filled valleys, Production has totaled over 82 million tons of finished products since the first shipment in June, 1947. Over 500 million tons of material have been mined from the deposit to date. Eagle Mountain Mine is noted for the pioneering use of the largest and most up to date equipment to mine and process its ore. In 1961 Eagle Mountain received the first fleet of 100-ton haulage trucks in the mining industry. There were thirteen semi-trailer units in the fleet. The first 12 to 17-yard size shovel in the mining industry was placed in operation at Eagle Mountain during 1962. Rotary drilling was introduced at Eagle Mountain in 1954 to replace churn drilling. Eagle Mountain was the first major mine to use metallized slurry when three aluminum slurries were introduced for primary blasting in 1962.

Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is an excellent material choice for a broad spectrum of corrosive fluids and, in many cases, offers the best value per dollar. FRP Flanges present the greatest design challenge of all standard piping components. The theory underlying the design of flanges is very complex. In addition, due to the nature of FRP material, proper fabrication of the flanges is as critical as the design. In this review, the challenges of making FRP flanges along with the design techniques and best practices of fabrication that will lead to a high-quality flange will be discussed.

In order to protect coal mine owners, operators, and lending institutions from potential environmental liabilities, responsible parties must maintain a thorough understanding of the environmental disposition of the property they control, and the ramifications of impending laws and regulations. The best way to accomplish this is to periodically conduct a Phase I Environmental Audit. The systematic approach of an audit will reveal areas of DOD compliance with SMCRA and EPA regulations which the coal owner and/or operator will be able to use to correct deficiencies and prevent the occurrence of conditions which could lead to permit block, fines, and ultimately reduced productivity.

The Pacific Northwest as defined in this review comprises an exceedingly large and geologically complex terrain that occupies the 'Western Cordillera mobile tectonic belt. This metallogenic province is approximately 2100 miles long and 350 to 500 miles wide. It extends north-northwest from northern California and Nevada, through western Idaho and Montana, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and southwestern Yukon Territory, to southern Alaska, and west from the western flank of the Northern Rocky Mountains to the continental margin (Fig. 1). Many detailed and thorough exploration programs that have been conducted by mining and petroleum companies for over a decade have demonstrated that porphyry-type deposits are both numerous and wide-spread throughout this province. Although the Granby Mining Company extracted about 34 million tons of copper sulfide ore from Copper Mountain during the period 1900-1957, intentional large-scale production of porphyry-type ores was first initiated in 1962. It began at Bethlehem Copper Corporation's East Jersey orebody in the Highland Valley District of south-central British Columbia, approximately eight years after Mr. H. H. Huestis rediscovered that broad zone of copper-molybdenum metallization and recognized its potential significance.

Anecdotal reports of high rates of congenital malformations and spontaneous abortions at the Shiprock Indian Health Service Hospital in San Juan County, New Mexico prompted an interview survey, obtaining data from families of 26 former uranium miners and 30 controls. Results supported the possibility of increased fetal wastage and congenital malformations. However, definitive conclusions were obviated by methodologic limitations in terms of selection of cases and controls and interviewing technique, as well as very low numbers and lack of statistical significance. The Council of Environmental Quality (1980) published a report which singled out San Juan County, nationally, as having an extra-ordinary high rate of congenital anomalies reported from birth certificates in the years 1973-75. San Juan County is in the northwest corner of New Mexico and includes the northeastern edge of the Navajo Indian Reservation. It has been the site of uranium mining and milling and also of coal mining (Clement Associates, 1980). While much attention has been focused on lung cancer and chronic lung disease as health hazards to uranium miners, virtually no attention has been focused upon possible reproductive effects that may result from exposure to radiation. Could these reports indicate such an additional arena of health effect either on miners or on others living in the vicinity of the mines and mills? The biologic and epidemiologic literature does not lend much support for adverse genetic outcome. The UNSCEAR report (UNSCEAR, 1977) summarizes much of the existing data. For example, on the basis of many animal studies and what has been observed in atom bomb survivers in Japan, it has been estimated that mutation rates resulting from low LET radiation to paternal germ cells would be 60 X 10-6 recessive and 20 X 10-6 dominant mutations per gamete per rad. There would be a five-fold increase in the number of recognizable abortions. The doubling dose for genetic disorders in mice is estimated at 100 rads. The assumption has been that low levels of exposure, such as might be received occupationally from uranium mines and mills or environmentally will produce reproductive effects that would defy distinction from background rates. However, the possibility can not be dismissed. In man, spermatogonia are thought to be three-fold more sensitive than in the mouse. Also, the high LET radiation from alpha particles is as much as 20-fold more effective in inducing changes in meiotic and post meiotic stages of cells, compared with low LET radiation. There is some degree of localization of alpha emitters in testicular tissue after inhalation of radon and radon daughters (Blanchard, R.L. and Moore, J.B., 1971; Pohl, E., 1964). The slopes of doseeffect curves are affected by type radiation and rate of administration. Data on such curves are poorly defined and debated as to whether there may be increased or decreased effect per unit dose at low levels of high LET radiation. Increased rates of aberrations of chromosomes in peripheral lymphocytes cultured from uranium miners have been reported (Brandom, W.F., et al., 1978). At cumulative exposures of 100 working level months (WLM) or less, a range of exposure lower than the limit of current occupational standards, the aberrations were increased more than two-fold. Our interest has led us to pursue the question of reproductive effects along three separate paths of inquiry: studies of the secondary sex ratio, cytogenetic study of human sperm, and studies of rates of congenital anomalies. I will present the thrust of our findings, most of which remain preliminary, comment on their interpretation and limitations, and indicate directions needed for future research. The secondary sex ratio is the ratio of males to females at birth. In the U.S., the ratio averages around 1.05. Ratios in blacks are somewhat lower (1.025) than in whites (1.053). For American Indians, the data are less definite. Values from Oklahoma and California are similar to whites (1.05). Southwestern tribes have, as we shall see, varying levels. The theoretical effects on sex ratio resulting from irradiation of the zygote are based on the principles of sex-linked genetics, including differential effects of lethal dominant and recessive mutations on the sex chromosomes, complicated by possible non-disjunctional events. Observations have done little to clarify, confirm or refute the theories. The sex ratio of progeny of survivers of the atomic bomb showed little change (Schull, W.J., Otake, M., and Neel, J.V., 1981). Observations in children of uranium miners having been inconsistent. Most frequently cited is a study of miners in Czechoslovakia (Müller, C., Razicka, L., and Bakstein, J., 1967). Compared with children born to miners prior to the start of mining, the sex ratios of children born after the start of mining were decreased -statistically significant after correcting for birth order. The ratios in first-born children were, before the start of mining, 1.118, and, after the start of mining, .713. In the interview survey at Shiprock, the sex ratio in families of non-miners was 1.03, and in families of miners it was 0.73 (p < .05). Dr. Alan Goodman at the University of New Mexico has studied trends in the sex ratio in the general population in New Mexico and Arizona with particular reference to counties in the Four Corners area and the Navajo Indian Reservation, areas where uranium mining has been active_ His findings (unpublished) are as follows: (1) Beginning in the early 1950&apos;s, there has been a modest, but persistant and statistically significant decline in the secondary sex ratio for the state of New Mexico compared with the U.S., a decline that roughly parallels the emergence of uranium mining in the Grants mineral belt in northwestern New Mexico. Cuando se diseña y operan minas de carbón subterráneas con el método de cámaras y pilares, es siempre difícil obtener un buen equilibrio entre la prevención de subsidencia de la superficie y la obtención de un alto coeficiente de recuperación. En este trabajo se propone una metodología de diseño aplicando la teoría de arco de presión y se detallan los principios y modelos matemáticos involucrados. Se desarrolló un programa de computadora a fin de realizar el proceso de optimización del diseño y fue aplicado a la examinación de un caso documentado en el que había sucedido una falla masiva de un pilar en cascada sobre un área grande en una mina de carbón poco profunda. Los resultados indican que el método de diseño propuesto puede ser aplicado para prevenir la subsidencia y a la vez obtener un alto coeficiente de recuperación para operaciones mineras de cámara y pilares.

Characterizing the abrasiveness of soil/rock and the allowable wear of hard-facing products in various conditions is a critical factor in selection of the best material for certain applications related to drilling and excavation in mining and construction industries. The Soil Abrasion Index test machine at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) is one of the recently developed unique systems capable of testing soil/crushed rock abrasion under various conditions, such as dry, wet, and saturated settings. It is also capable of testing the performance of various types of hard-facing materials in a given geo-material. This paper studies the wear properties of different hard-facing materials in various crushed rocks from a surface mining operation in the iron range region of the USA. The hard-facing materials include regular and hardened steels and six different specialized hard facings, based on chromium carbide. The soil/rock include a standard sand and two rock samples from the surface mine. Fourteen abrasion tests were conducted, where the weight loss of each hard-facing material was measured over timespans up to 1 h of testing. The results show the distinct performance differences between the steels with 17 HRC and 43 HRC hardness and the hard-facing products for this application. The results show the possibility to evaluate the abrasiveness of different rocks at a mine or construction site and the performance of various hard facings in similar working conditions. This is a practical solution for selection of the cutting tool or reinforcement of bucket lips and truck beds for comparison of relative wear life between different wear-resistant materials.

Natural sodium sulfate is obtained from both brines and solid deposits. The brines almost always contain other salts with sodium chloride predominating. They may be obtained from surface occurrences, such as Great Salt Lake or from shallow subterranean deposits. Althought many sodium sulfate minerals are known to exist, only three are of commercial significance. These are thenardite, the anhydrous salt; mirabilite, the decahydrate; and glauberite, the double salt of sodium and calcium sulfate. The reader is referred to Weisman (1983) for details on mineralogy and geology of sodium sulfate minerals. Sodium sulfate deposits, either in the form of brine or solid minerals, are found in many parts of the world. Natural sources, by far, provide the primary supply of commercial grades in Canada, Mexico, Spain, and probably in the U.S.S.R., Chile, Argentina, and Turkey. In the United States, production of natural material and synthetic (including by-product) are about equal in volume and have been for many years.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk, either at the commissioning of a concentrator or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-confidence flotation testing (HCFT) was developed for this purpose and is part of the list of technologies at various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of research on this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to the HCFT method and complementary connections between sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. The influence of mining on the hydro-geomechanical environment is greatly constrained by alternating mining geometries. The limiting magnitudes of surface subsidence and groundwater flow over the mining area, as a result of geometry changes, can be reasonably predicted through a coupled finite-element model introduced in this paper. Verification of the model has been tested using real and conceptual case studies which reveal that changes in strata conductivities are strongly related to the strata deformation induced by mining. The greatest modification of hydraulic conductivities occurs within the caving or severely fractured zones. The study indicates that narrowing the panel face width will substantially reduce both the intensity and extent of mining damage to the overlying strata, limit surface subsidence and constrain the change in hydraulic conductivity to a reduced scale and smaller extent, particularly as mining depth increases.

The continuous balling? operation whereby a moist particulate mass is tumbled in a horizontal revolving drum with recirculation of the undersize product can be extremely unstable. Product and recycle rates are subject to wide fluctuations. Although the problem seems to be well-recognized, there is little published information or quantitative data readily available, especially in relation to industrial-scale circuits. Probably the best available published results are in the Russian literature, an illustration of which is given in Figure 1. These data, taken from a study&apos;) of some of the factors which influence the stabilization of the pelletizing process, illustrate the wide variations in circulating load and circuit productivity which may be encountered over a period of operation. The problems of balling circuit stability may be traced to random seed or nuclei generation and uncontrolled agglomerate growth. The situation is analogous to that in crystallization processes where (4 considerable attention is given to nucleation control. Design of chain pillars in a longwall mine setting is one of the main engineering controls on the global and local stability of the mine. Challenges with roof instabilities, floor heaves, and pillar failures can be alleviated, to some extent, by careful design of gateroad configurations and chain pillars. This work investigates three different alternative designs in a three-entry-system gateroad configuration with an inter-panel barrier in a longwall mine in Virginia. Starting with the current design, which has faced challenges such as excessive floor heave, a geomechanical model developed in 3DEC software is validated by monitoring in-situ pillar stress in the yield, abutment, and barrier pillars in the mine. Next, three different chain pillar designs are evaluated in the model with a focus on roof sagging, floor heave, and pillar average stress. Results show the relationships among the alternative designs and instabilities associated with roof, pillar, and floor in the study mine, providing insights for optimizing longwall mining designs in deep-cover settings.

A massive roof fall occurred in a small room-and-pillar coal mine. The roof falls occurred under a barrier pillar in a closed coal mine located a short distance above the active mine. The extensive fractures connected the active mine with the old mine, turning them into a “combined mine.” Since completely sealing off the roof fall area is prohibitively expensive for the mine, ventilating the connected old mine became the only option. A comprehensive investigation was conducted to understand the atmospheric condition in the old mine and to find an efficient way to ventilate the “combined mine.” A set of studies involving geology, gas content, pillar stability and mine subsidence were performed to explore whether the closed mine is filled with an explosive air-methane mixture. The air quantity measurement data were used to determine the resistance of the air path formed through the fractured zone. Observations and measurements made from a tour to the underground and mine surface enabled the formulation of simple but effective ways to ventilate the old mine. The ventilation network analysis also suggested methods of control, so that sufficient ventilation air can be directed to the two parts of the old mine.

Preventing pillar squeezes, massive pillar collapses, and bumps is critical to the safe and efficient recovery of coal during room-and-pillar retreat mining. To help prevent these problems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) computer program. ARMPS calculates stability factors (SF) based on estimates of the loads applied to and the load-bearing capacities of, pillars during retreat mining operations. The program can model the significant features of most retreat mining layouts, including angled crosscuts, varied spacings between entries, barrier pillars between the active section and old (side) gobs, and slab cuts in the barriers on retreat. It also features a pillar strength formula that considers the greater strength of rectangular pillars. The program may be used to evaluate bleeder designs as well as active workings. A data base of 110 pillar retreat mining case histories has been collected across the United States to verify the program. It was found that satisfactory conditions were very rare when the ARMPS SF was less than 0.75. Conversely, very few unsatisfactory designs were found where the ARMPS SF was greater than 1. 5.

Upgrading of low-concentration ores is of growing importance today. The Heavy Medium Cyclone Process, thanks to strong centrifugal forces, effectively separates particles varying only slightly in specific gravity but widely in size. The paper discusses the separation efficiency, the method of assessing that efficiency, and the influence of such factors as medium solids. The operating results of nine heavy medium cyclone plants handling following minerals are reported: barite, wolfram, iron, magnesite, diamond, lead-zinc, fluorspar, rocksalt potash. Highlighted are an improved recovery system for heavy medium and some other developments, such as techniques for separation down to 0.1mm and the application in the field of recycling.

Water and wind erosion of toxic zinc and lead smelter waste is one of the most urgent environmental problems to be solved in the Silesia region of Poland. Over 87 x 106 Mg of various mining wastes were disposed of in uncontrolled piles leading to soil, water, and air pollution in highly populated areas. Welz and Doerschel process Pb/Zn smelter wastes were stabilized in the summer of 1994 by application of heavy loads of CaCO3 (30 Mg/ha), CaO (1.5 -15 Mg/ha), and municipal biosolids (150 -300 Mg/ha), followed by seeding with a mixture of acid-and salt-tolerant grass species selected in a pot experiment. Vegetation was successfully established on 85% of the Welz material demonstration plot area (0.5 ha), even though it was initially high in water-soluble Zn, Pb, and Cd ranging from 0.4 to 1311,0.1 to 5.8, and 0.05 to 55 mg/kg, respectively. Standing biomass averaged 3.3 Mg/ha on the stabilized Welz waste zone by the end of the third growing season (1997). The revegetation of much of the Doerschel material area failed initially because of extremely high salinity (16 dS m-1), high content of water soluble metals (Cd in particular), and heavy compaction. The area was capped (15 cm) with waste lime and retreated with bio-solids (300 Mg/ha) in 1995, and standing biomass averaged 2.9 Mg/ha in the fall of 1997. The observed plant response to bio-solids and lime indicates this approach to be an environmentally beneficial technology as compared to the traditional methods utilizing topsoil covers.

The understanding of the influence of the different types of apatite on the performance of mineral processing of igneous phosphate ores is still a challenge due to the difficulty to explain why some types of apatite floats in the froth flotation cell and others do not under the same conditions. Three types of apatite were identified by means of cathodoluminescence (CL) images in flotation concentrate and tailing samples from the Catalão mine: predominantly blue apatite, followed by green apatite and less frequently yellow apatite. The chemical composition of these types of apatite was determined by electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) and LA-ICP-MS. Blue and green apatite respond well to the process, thus remaining in the concentrate, while yellow apatite remained in the tailings. Yellow apatite is the one bearing the lowest P2O5 content and the largest anionic and cationic sites substitution, followed by green apatite, whereas blue apatite is the most homogeneous, with highest P and Ca grades and lowest substitution level. A negative correlation of the amount of phosphorus with fluorine was observed. Furthermore, impregnation of iron oxide-hydroxides in the yellow apatite was also observed. Therefore, the low flotation behaviour is due to low crystallinity coupled with impregnation onto its surface.

Ground support requirements for safe and economical design of room and pillar coal mining layouts are reviewed. The design methods for mine roofs and mine pillars are discussed and the role of the geotechnical aspects is considered. It is shown that current support design procedures in the United States do not utilize fully the latest research findings and the need for more effective technology transfer in coal mine ground control is emphasized. Promising new developments in ground support are identified and possible research areas are suggested.

A recent analysis completed by the United States Department of Commerce predicts that the 1968 Gross National Product will reach a record high of 864 billion dollars. As our nation annually increases its total output of goods and services, as has been the trend, the consumption of steel and its most basic raw material - iron ore - also must increase, To deliver the most economical unit of iron ore to the blast furnace, each segment of the transportation system must be co-ordinated and utilized to its highest degree of efficiency. In some cases, such as with the water segment of the system, a new investment in capacity will be required.
