RESINS from a bituminous pitch, a bituminous coal, a lignite tar, a subbituminous pitch, and an electrode binder pitch wore investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The compositions of these resins were determined by four independent methods of structural detemination: (1) Molecular formula and ring analysis, including ring (2) infrared and ultraviolet spectra; (3) combined pyrolysis/gas chromatography, and (4) catalytic dehyrogenation followed by spectra and pyrolysis. The resin structure was correlated with coal structure, and it was concluded that pitch resins probably consist of essentially unaltered coal molecules carried over with the tar vapors in low-temperature carbonization.

Nine rock properties were determined for rocks coming from 49 locations and having a wide range of compressive strengths. Plots of the nine rock properties versus each other were prepared. A stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed to obtain several equations for predicting compressive strength. Both linear and curvilinear relationships were assumed between compressive strength and the other rock properties. The prediction equations had multiple correlation coefficients ranging from 0.947 for an equation with 1 variable (point load tensile strength) to 0.986 for an equation with 25 variables. Of the properties tested only point load tensile strength could be used alone to estimate compressive strength with fair accuracy.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Department of Energy (DOE), through its contractor EG&G Idaho Inc., are collaborating on a multiyear research project to evaluate the applicability of three-phase, electric arc furnace melting technology to vitrify materials simulating low-level radioactive and mixed wastes buried or stored at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory and other DOE sites. The melter is a sealed, 1-t (1.1-st), three-phase, 800-kV?A electric arc melting furnace with 10.2-cm-(4-in?) diameter graphite electrodes, water-cooled roof and sidewalls, and four water-cooled feed tubes. A water-cooled copper fixture provides for continuous tapping of slag. An instrumented air pollution control system (APCS) with access ports for analysis and a feeder based on screw conveyors and a bucket elevator are dedicated to the facility. Test data are provided by an arc furnace analyzer and by sensors indicating feed rate; slag temperature; and temperature, pressure, and velocity in the APCS. These data are received by a data logger, digitized, and transmitted to a personal computer for storage and display. This unique waste treatment facility is available for public and private use on a cost-sharing basis.

For many years the Federal Bureau of Mines has been investigating fires and explosions in mines, tunnels, buildings, and hazardous processes of various kinds. Means and methods for controlling and extinguishing mine fires and preventing explosions and other accidents in many hazardous processes require the collection and analysis of samples of the atmospheres surrounding the sources of ignition. Complex mixtures of gases often encountered in mines, tunnels, and industrial processes may well presage imminent danger from explosions. This report discusses some practicable methods of utilizing the analyses of samples of complex mixtures of gases in their application to the many problems that arise from their presence.

The first metal-mine accident-prevention course was prepared and published 1942-45 as a series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57). The course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date and is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars on accident prevention at metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: 1. Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

EXTENSIVE research and development was performed on the manganese-copper vibration-damping alloys to determine the relationship between the properties of the alloys and variations in composition, fabrication, Mid heat treatment. Mn-Cu alloys with unusually high specific damping capacity, 20 to 25 percent at a stress of 5,000 psi, have also the following useful properties: Tensile strength, 90,000 to 110,000 psi; yield strong, 60,000 to psi; elongation, 20 to 25 percent; hardness, 90 Rockwell B; and fatigue limit at, 28,000 to 30,000 psi. Both standard and special methods of testing were employed to obtain data on strength, modulus, hardness, resistivity, dilatation, micro-structure, crystal lattice, and damping capacity. The extensive tabular and graphical data on these properties are presented for alloys containing 50 to 85 percent as quenched d solution) and after various aging treatments. Expansion coefficients for all Mn-Cu solid solutions are graphed and a dilatometer study of contraction during aging is reported. Although high damping capacity is associated with aging to precipitate a-Mn from solid solution, with a cubic-tetragonal transformation and with the occurrence of antiferromagnetic ordering in Mn-Cu alloys, a tenable theory of the damping mechanism has not been reached.

The recession that took hold of the domes-tic mining industry in 1981-82 finally abated somewhat in 1987, resulting from increases in many commodity prices, especially in the metals sector, and from continuing success in lowering operating costs. By no means was the work finished; the mining industry was in a sense entering a new era. The struggle for survival was still very evident for many companies and various commodities, but increasing productivity and profits were accompanied by indications that these trends were more long term than short term. Raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1987 had an estimated value of $26.3 billion, an increase of $2.9 billion over the 1986 value. This is the fifth consecutive year that the value has increased. Except for a decrease in 1982, the value each year has increased since 1971, or 15 of 16 years. The value of raw metals production increased by an estimated 28%, an impressive improvement since the drastic fall in 1982. Industrial minerals growth was comparatively flat, with an estimated in-crease in value of 0.1 %, continuing a trend of the previous 2 years. Metal mine production dropped considerably in 1982 and maintained its resultant lower level until 1987, when production significantly recovered.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a study of mine fires in the Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania to determine the most effective approaches to fire control in this area. The problems involved in controlling an anthracite fire include the geological and mining conditions in this area, the propagation characteristics of anthracite, the fire control methods available, the hazards associated with these fires, and the mar-ginal effectiveness of past fire control projects. From this genecal background, fire control options were discussed as they apply in ISBO to the Centralia mine fire. Probable effectiveness, feasibility, and costs were assessedv The options evaluated include four excavation plans, flooding, hydraulic flushing, water curtain isolation, mining to construct an underground carrier, burnout control, and relocation of the community. The most advantageous from a technical viewpoint is an excavation method combining complete excavation of the fire zone within the borough with trenching to confine the remaining fire. It appears that for many anthracite fires, as for the Centralia mine fire, there are no available control measures that have a moderate cost, are proven effective, and produce minimal disruption on the surface.

The mode of propagation of explosions through narrow passages is important for understanding flameproofed equipment employed in mines. Narrow channels have been used in this investigation that connected between a small explosion chamber and a large chamber containing fuel-air mixture. The oxygen index of the mixture in the small chamber was determined which caused an explosion in the outer chamber. Preliminary measurements have already been given in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5457 and suggested that) flames do not pass through narrow channels. The hot, burned gases from the explosion in the small chamber, however, are able to ignite the mixture in the large chamber by a process of hot-gas ignition. Systematic measurements are reported in the present paper that cover the influence of channel length and diameter and the properties of the gas mixtures in the large chamber on the transmission of explosions. The influence of such properties as quenching diameter and flame temperature is also discussed. This paper concludes the work on this problem and presents a theory that describes in detail parameters that influence transmission of explosions through narrow channels. The properties of coal from the Pittsburgh seam, procured from the Bruceton and Federal No. 2 Mines were found to be similar. Strength and stiffness properties of Beehive Mine coal were determined and the material found to be isotropic. Mechanical, index and geologic properties of roof and floor coal measure rocks from Beehive mines were measured and correlated. Analytic formulations are given for coal creep under uniaxial loading, while triaxial creep is being investigated. Results of testing of coal model structures are compared with predictions from using several material models.

The productive capacity of natural-gasoline and cycling plants in the United States on January 1, 1958, was 48.8 million gallons per day, according to the Bureau of Mines biennial survey. This represented an increase of 2.4 million gallons per day during the 2-year period since the last survey. In the previous 2-year period, capacity had increased 7.5 million gallons per day. The major increase in operating capacity occurred in Texas and New Mexico. In New Mexico, capacity increased 43 percent. The total number of plants decreased from 600 on January 1, 1956, to 584 on January 1, 1958. The number of operating plants decreased from 571 to 558. Five new plants were completed in Colorado, increasing the number of operating plants from 7 to 12.

"Previous investigation 4/ has demonstrated that some of the aliphatic amines are suitable absorbents for 302, This paper reports the results of physical studies of a number of such amines with the object of determining which is most favorable as an absorbent.Monoethanol amine, diethylene triamine, and triethylene tetramine appear to be the most promising of all the amines studied, and most of this report has been devoted to studies of the physical properties of their aqueous solutions, which contain varying amounts of SO2.PURITY OF MATERIALSAll of the amines used were of commercial grade, because the primary object of this research was the investigation of a proposed works process rather than the accumulation of scientific data.The aminoethyl derivitives of ethylene diamine, namely, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, and tetraethylene pentamine, only recently have been produced commercially. The chemistry of aliphatic amines is complex, and these newer derivitives have not been investigated, completely. Chemically pure material is not on the market, and since definite physical standards have not been published, one could not be assured of a pure product even if the commercial material was refined.The compilation of physical constants for the pure amines would involve much time—consuming effort without materially enhancing the value of this paper, as this work was not devoted to the development of fundamental standards."

Changes in world mine and smelter supply sources of zinc have led to changes in zinc supply patterns in the United States during the past 3 years, 1970-72. The result has been a growing reliance on foreign sources of zinc metal to furnish an ever-increasing portion of expending domestic requirements. This review of fundamentals and historical developments is intended to provide background in order to place the future of the U.S. zinc industry fn perspective. The properties and uses of zinc are described. A new study on U.S. reserves is presented with description by geographical region and comparisons with older reserve data. The technology of the zinc industry from prospecting through refining is described with emphasis on the metallurgy involved in the various methods of smelting. Production, consumption, and imports are discussed and illustrated with graphs and tables to review the past and present patterns. Government actions affecting the industry are shown.

1. The Pittsburgh is the most important bed in Greene County from the standpoint of present production and recoverable reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 6,011 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 5,967 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in some beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

"Low-rank coals have a pronounced tendency to disintegrate or ""slack” when alternately dried, and wetted by exposure to the weather. The more readily a coal slacks the greater is its tendency to ignite spontaneously and the more care must be used in its shipment and storage. Lignite slacks very readily when exposed to the weather. Slacking trouble is also experienced in shipping and storing subbituminous coal, but not to the same extent as with lignite. As a rule, bituminous coals are only slightly affected by weathering and in general may be classified as nonslacking coals. The slacking tendency of subbituminous coal is one of the characteristics that is used to distinguish it from bituminous coal. An accelerated laboratory method of test was developed to measure such slacking tendencies. This method was applied to a number of coals, principally from the State of Washington, and the method and the results obtained are given herein.Helpful information concerning slacking tendencies of coal was received from Marius R. Campbell, senior geologist U. S. Geological Survey.Coals that slack readily contain relatively large amounts of moisture. When exposed to the weather such coals lore moisture rapidly. As the coal loses moisture at the surface there is a gradual drift of moisture from the interior of the piece to the surface. If the loss of moisture at the surface proceeds at a faster rate than it is replaced by moisture from the interior of the coal piece, there undoubtedly in greater shrinkage of the coal at the surface as tom-pared to the interior of the piece and stressed are generated in the surface coal.These stresses in the surface coal cause it to crack and disintegrate.Likewise, when the air-dried coal is wetted by rain, the exposed surface of the coal pieces gain moisture more rapidly than the interior of the piece, causing greater expansion in the surface coal and the coal breaks down further. As this process of air drying and wetting is continued when the coal is exposed to the weather, the slacking proceeds and the exposed lumps of coal may disintegrate completely."

THIS REPORT give's the results of a study of the central and south parts of the Cushing oilfield, including a description of the geology, a review of the production history, and estimates of oil reserves available by secondary-recovery methods. Each of the major producing zones of the field is treated separately. The report, which is one of a long series of field studies the Bureau of Mines has conducted over the past 40 years, was prepared to aid operators to increase oil recovery and to help prevent underground waste in the Cushing field, in the State of Oklahoma, and in the United States. The geology and production history are presented not as a review of past behavior of the Cushing field but rather to interpret the possibilities for increased oil recovery by future development of this and similar areas. The field, which is in the northwest corner of Creek County, Okla., was discovered in 1912 and developed during 1913 and 1914. For several years it, was one of the most important areas producing high-grade crude oil in Oklahoma. Although some oil has been recovered from each of 10 separate reservoirs, nearly 98 percent of the total recovery of oil in the area studied was from 4 major producing formations (table 1). The compressibility factors, Z, of helium, nitrogen, and helium-nitrogen mixtures in the three-dimensional space of temperature, pressure, and gas composition have been related to the Leiden form of the virial equation of state. The dependency of virial coefficients through the fifth on temperature and gas composition has been established for the temperature range 133.15° to 748.15° K. Compressibility factors, Z, have been computed from the equation of state and tabulated as functions of gas composition, pressure, and temperature. Tabular values of Z are presented for 30.00 through 100.00 percent helium for temperatures from 240° through 700° R for pressures from 14.696 through 3,050 psia and for temperatures from 720° through 1,300° R for pressures from 14.696 through 1,500 psia. Tabular values of Z are presented at increments of 5.00 percent helium and 20° R, and, for pressures greater than 50 psia, at increments of 50 psi.

To develop the potential of precast concrete sets as a support medium in underground mines, a three-piece precast concrete drift set was designed for a small opening and tested to destruction in an underground straining frame. Thirty-six tests were made with three sizes of members using three different loading conditions. In addition, 14 members were tested individually in the laboratory. Test results are compared with theoretical calculations. A cost comparison shows the use of concrete sets would be advantageous where conventional wooden timber requires excessive replacement.

From 1986 to 1989, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 59,600-acre Mexican Mountain Wilderness Study Area (UT-060-054) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Emery County, UT, about 24 miles east of Castle Dale, UT. A review of the geologic and mining literature, and a field examination identified two uranium prospects in the Wilderness Study Area, and three copper prospects nearby. One-hundred ninety-five rock samples were taken.
