In 2014 the authors presented results from 13 tests made with two blasting seismographs on a vibration exciter. They measured coupling transmissibility as function of frequency (i.e. ratio of the velocity of the sensor mount to the velocity of the ground motion) from 16 to 200 Hz at one or two vibrations levels (5 mm/s or 0.2 in/s, and 20 mm/s or 0.79 in/s) with mounts freely placed, sandbagged, and anchored to a granite slab firmly attached to the plate of a vibration exciter. As the memory capacity of one of the seismographs prevented to cover low frequencies, e.g. 4-16 Hz, a new measuring campaign has been recently made to extend the study down to 2 Hz. In this campaign, two more techniques, in which the sensor mounts were fixed with thermal adhesive or a combination of duct tape and gypsum plaster, have been also investigated from 2 to 200 Hz at 5 and 20 mm/s. Free and sandbagged mounts lead to a weak coupling of the mounts to rock, so that transmissibility depends on the characteristics of the imposed rock motion (peak velocity and frequency). Measurements are accurate only at low frequencies (below 17 Hz for free mounts and 10 Hz for sandbagged) in the tested conditions (velocities up to 20 mm/s). Above these frequencies, ground motion in the measurement can be modified by a factor of 0.16 to 1.22. Anchored, glued and plastered mounts achieve a stiff rock-to-ground coupling, ensuring consistent measurements for the frequencies commonly found in blasting independently of the vibration level and the mount characteristics

It is important to be able to quantify the effects of blast delay designs on vibration characteristics. White was the first company to develop commercially available software, called Alpha-Blast, for this purpose. The program can indicate relative amplitude and frequency results to be expected from the use of particular delay intervals. If enhanced vibration effects from delays are a problem, a technique to evaluate this situation will be invaluable.

First, I want to thank my co-author, Leon del Valle for his help and collaboration in the preparation of this paper, and also ORICA S.S. our explosive supplier and contractor at the Refugio mine site for their collaboration. The Southern Andes Mountains present a number of challenges for mining operations, and associated blasting operations. This region of the world, in Peru, Bolivis, Chile and Argentina is an area of rapid growth in precious and base metal mining, and will continue to be a large growth area for explosives products and services. This paper will attemp to discuss some of the special considerations encountered in operating a safe and effective blasting program at high elevation and under extreme weather conditions, as well as outlining a recent improvement in blasting techniques at the Refugio gold mine in northern Chile. This paper is presented from a mine operator's perspective, which may be a bit of a disappointment for some of you interested in a detailed technical review of our program. It willl, however, provide an insight in how in-pit blasting techniques tie into the metallurgical processes at a modern precious metal mine and thereby become a key elemnet in its success.

The detection, recovery and disposal of commercial explosives and explosive waste has always carried a level of risk and requires specialized equipment and technical expertise. Improperly stored, discarded, deteriorated, misfired, stolen or surplus products are often the primary sources of explosives that require safe disposal. The mining industry occasionally blasts near pressurized transmission pipelines and has requested guidance of safe vibration levels and setback distances. the Bureau of Mines and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources cooperated with AMAX Coal Company on a study of coal mine overburden blasting. Five buried and pressurized 250-ft pipeline sections were specifically installed on the Minnehaha Mine highwall near Sullivan, IN for testing to failure. Four welded steel pipes ranging from 6- to 20- in diameter and one 8- PVC water supply pipe were monitored for vibration, strain, and internal pressure for a period of 6 months while production blasting advanced up to the pipeline field. In contrast to previous studies of small-scale blasting representing construction activities, these tests involved overburden blasts of up to 2100 lb per delay in 12-l/4-in diameter holes.

There currently exists no viable means of obtaining continuous feedback on blast efficiency. This paper describes the adaptation of a loading shovel to serve as a diagnostic tool to evaluate the success of ground preparation. Work undertaken in a large western Canadian open pit involved microprocessor-based instrumentation for the performance monitoring of an electric mining shovel. The monitored shovel responses proved to be reliable indicators of variations in muckpile diggability. This approach is considered to provide a very comprehensive survey of post blast conditions since such a shovel interacts which every cubic yard of a blast.

The recent drop in the value of the South African Rand has resulted in an increased export value for South African coal and has lead to new coal reserves becoming available for mining. Recent developments in hardware and software have made accurate measurement of Underground Face (Development) Drilling a reality. New and compact laser profiling equipment makes it possible to measure drilled material left on the face as well as the actual tracks of the holes drilled in the rounds. Utilization of these available technologies makes it possible to correctly define the drilling accuracy and the blasting pull. Through the use of actual face round measurements, I will show the level of definition and amount of information that can be collected.
