Abstract

Looking at the process of drilling rock from the standpoint of the power required, yields an equation that relates Force-on-the-Bit; Torque, to rotate the bit; and bit Angular Speed to the Penetration Rate of the bit; the Area of the hole being drilled and the Specific Fracture Energy of the rock. Specific Fracture Energy and the Compressive Strength of the rock are related.
