Drill trajectory deviation is a recurring problem in vertical retreat stoping operations. As a result of this deviation, 60 kilogram (165 millimetre diameter) and 103 kilogram (302 millimetre diameter) explosive charges are routinely detonated beyond ore/waste contact zones. Consequently, there follows a reduction in finished stope wall stability and an increase in ore dilution.

A cache of buried explosives was discovered by ICI Explosives, USA Inc. at one of their sites near Gillette, Wyoming. An intensive investigation conducted by ICI management indicated that nitroglycerin sensitized dynamite might be present. Information also indicated that up to 20,000 pounds of explosives may have been buried.

A joint Federal Government-Industry research project on the effect of geology on the fragmentation of rock excavated by blasting in underground developments was conducted at the CANMET Experimental Mine, near Val d'Or, Québec. A total of thirteen (13) blasts were studied from November 1994 to February 1995. The analysis of each blast was divided into three stages: pre-blast characterization, including structural mapping, assessment of Rock Mass Ratings (RMR), Tunneling Quality Indices (Q), blast design documentation; blast characterization comprising blast vibration monitoring and analysis; and post-blast assessment comprising fragmentation assessment by digital photoanalysis, calculation of half cast factors and measurements of bootlegs.

The effect on an explosive column of the sharp transient stress waves generated during the earlier detonation of adjacent blastholes is of paramount importance to explosives users. Some explosives will sympathetically detonate under these stresses. Others may suffer a transient desensitization, arising from a temporary increase in the density of an explosive beyond certain limits and persisting until the explosive mass relaxes back to the original density. Some explosives are so adversely affected by these stresses that the product suffers immediate and permanent loss of sensitivity. These effects can be clearly seen while blasting in tough conditions such as burn cuts or wedge cuts and in materials, such as coals, that propagate shock waves well.

The Society of Explosives Engineers is an international organization of over four hundred members involved in the explosives industry, with most members being active in the United States. The regulations imposed by regulatory agencies on the explosives industry have drastic effects far beyond the industry. Since explosives are used in mining, manufacturing, construction, entertainment, and art, all phases of man's activities, including fundamental needs for survival, are affected by how efficient the industry uses explosives. We, as members of SEE, must be sincerely concerned with both the quantity and quality of government regulation, and this paper spells out some of the problems caused by regulations and offers a solution.

Natural resource agencies, under various regulatory authorities, are challenged with permitting underwater explosive use while at the same time protecting aquatic resources. Deciding on whether or not to allow use of explosives requires striking a balance between development and aquatic resource protection. A company's goal in underwater explosive use is to select methods that are both expedient and cost effective. Use of explosives is often the best alternative for engineering reasons or economic considerations. Over and above legal requirements, indiscriminate destruction of fish and other aquatic resources is not in a company's best interests because of concerns relating to public image, as well as the need to secure future contracts.

Some two million cubic yards of sandstone and orthoquartzite were blasted and excavated at Upper Stillwater Dam, located high in the Uinta Mountains in northern Utah. The material was processed to produce concrete aggregate for the construction of the largest roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam ever constructed, and one of just a few in existence. The dam cross-section is shown in Figure 1. The aggregate was sound rock produced from required dam foundation excavation and from a quarry located about 1/2 mile from the dam site. Representative compressive strengths of the sandstones and quartzites were in the range of 20,000 to 30,000 psi.

Historically, laws controlling the manufacture, sale, transportation and storage of high explosives and regulations governing the use of explosives were formulated to prevent accidents or eliminate incidents that might jeopardize public safety. Many of the original laws and regulations regarding classification of explosives and blasting materials, tables of distances for separation and/or isolation of explosives, construction of storage magazines and methods of blasting were based upon empirical data, field experiments or scientific facts. During the past few years, however, it appears that some of the explosive laws and blasting regulations introduced and/or enacted by federal, state and local agencies seem to be based more on political expediency than on factual information or technical data.

CAROM is a distinct element, dynamic code developed at Sandia National Laboratories to calculate the motion of rock fragments during blasting.[1] It has recently been improved to incorporate a mechanism for its elements to mimic non-circular rock fragments. With this option, elements stack and move in ways that are characteristic of irregular boulders of blasted rock. In bench geometry, CAROM has been used to examine the possibility of producing variations in muckpile shape due to variations in detonation-time delays between rows. Surprisingly, the shape of the muckpile was predicted to be insensitive to time delays between detonation of rows of explosive, except where the rock fracturing was affected by the time delays.

There are a variety of sources of dynamic stress which can affect a building and give rise to cracking. A two-storey house, situated in the middle of a surface coal mine was monitored for a period of 30 months to attempt to identify the major causes of cracking. The factors described as environmental include internal and external temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, rainfall and water table level. These were monitored using a weather station and piezometer and recorded every 20 minutes. The other factors are vibratory and include normal household movement (walking, shutting doors etc.), vehicle vibration and blast vibration. All the significant vibrations in the house were recorded using four sets of velocity transducers and accelerometers.

The Carajás Iron Mine, recognized as the largest iron ore province in the world, is notable for its continuous efforts to improve operational efficiency and safety. In response to these objectives, a QA/QC (Quality Assurance and Quality Control) Program was implemented and integrated with Blastscout Probe technology to optimize drilling and blasting processes. The program supports the standardization of operational parameters, the execution of regular audits, and real-time data analysis, facilitating precise and timely adjustments. The implementation led to significant improvements, including an 80% increase in operational compliance, a 49% reduction in drilling depth deviations, and a 30% enhancement in Jaspelite fragmentation. This study presents the methodology employed, the outcomes obtained, and the positive impacts observed in both operational performance and environmental management.

Overbreak into the wall rock of a development drift leads to the inevitable need to rehabilitate a drift. Moreover, overbreak in a production heading can lead to external dilution and lower ore grades. Both of these factors are critical to bottom line costs of underground operations today. The geology of the Homestake orebody makes this an even more complex problem. For over fifteen years the Homestake Mine has attempted to implement perimeter blasting techniques that are both safe and cost effective. Many practical perimeter methods and products have been tested including air decking; low density emulsions; various types of stick powder; various decoupling media including rope, low density ANFO, polystyrene ANFO, salt based ANFO, and various grain detonating cords up to 200 grain.

In situ, most Taconite is heavily pre-fractured; because of the high cost of comminution of taconite, maximum fracture of pre-existing blocks is desirable. Sustained borehole pressure plays a significant role in fragmentation, especially by penetrating pre-existing fractures. The distribution of explosive-induced energy in the burden in three dimensions was calculated. Data on the comminution of single particles was used, with the distribution of energies and the distribution of pre-existing block sizes, to calculate fragmentation for a case study. The calculation agreed well with the measured fragmentation. Sequential comminution events are much more efficient than single ones, and enhanced fragmentation may be possible with alternative blasting practices. Some important factors in the dependence of comminution on energy input are discussed.

A large open-cast limestone mine had its blasting operations severely restricted by the imposition of limiting PPV levels to protect a water pipe-line passing through the mine property. Attempts were made to measure the strains induced in the pipe by ground vibrations, so that a less restrictive blasting limitation could be established on a scientific basis.
