The process of gold(I) adsorption on activated carbon (AC) from aqueous Na[Au(CN)2] and the state of the adsorbed gold cyanide complex on the adsorbent surface was investigated by photometry, XPS, XANES methods. By DFT method, quantum-chemical calculations were performed of the gold cyanide species on activated carbon surface. It was established that the binding of gold(I) with the surface of carbon involved several simultaneous processes governing the selective adsorption of gold(I) from the cyanide solutions.

Mining operations offer many opportunities for the use of IT and communication technologies to improve automation and thereby deliver higher levels of productivity, cost, quality and safety. In this paper, we discuss a particular application, namely, building a fully automated train control and operation system within a mining area. We first outline the basic architecture and functionality of such a system and then present a real-life case study where the railway system within a remote iron ore mine in Canada was converted to a fully automated train operation system. This hard real-time safety-critical system required the use of advanced technologies such as embedded systems (e.g., on-board train controller), radio communications, formal methods, optimal scheduling, and extensive simulations. We focus on the design aspects for maintaining the system in safe states.

Spiral concentrator, which works on the principle of gravity separation, is widely used in the mineral industries for separation of solid particles based on the size and density. In the present study, CFD simulation of the flow profile on a laboratory scale spiral concentrator of height 2.29 m, pitch 0.435 m and width 0.17m was carried out. A single computational domain covering the entire spiral was considered. Volume-of-Fluid algorithm was used to track the interface and predict the flow profile. In the present study the Donor-Acceptor method was used for the calculation of volume fraction in the cell. Simulation results show that the velocity increases as the water flows down due to the convective force and gravitational force, but the viscous force acting in the opposite direction retards the flow. Thus the maximum velocity is attained at turn three at which the viscous force overpowers the other forces and further down the velocity decreases. Measured water depths along the radius of the spiral at various heights were compared with simulated depths, which were in good agreement. The simulated liquid phase velocity profile was used to carry out preliminary studies on the flow profile of solid particles of size 500 micron and densities 2600kg/m3 and 5100kg/m3, based on the Lagrangian model taking into consideration fluid-particle interaction.

According to the unique properties and many applications of nano gold powder, it was prepared from an acid leaching tail solution. The low value residual gold ions were existed in acid leaching tail solution in Mouteh gold mine in Iran with fellow heavy metals as pollutants (FeP2+P, Cu P2+P, and ZnP2+P). Preparation of nano gold particles is achieved by two steps. First, by addition of ammonia as separation step and second using suitable reagents for precipitation/extraction step. Conditions control includes pH, residence time, temperature, agitation, and molar ratio of reducing agents to reagents. The optimum results show that nano gold powder was prepared by temperature of 250 °C, urea to gold molar ratio of 3:1, and reduction time of 20 min. Also, heat treatment improves dispersion of nano sized gold particles. The properties of gold nano powders were evaluated by SEM, A.A, and UV- Vis spectroscopy methods. The size of prepared particles were about 80nm to 90nm.

There are interactions between different minerals from the same ore, minerals and grinding media, and the electrochemical conditions present in the system. Grinding in steel rod and ball mills is a common practice in minerals processing. It is accepted, that the electrochemical interactions between the grinding media and minerals in a grinding mill, influence the corrosive wear of balls/rods and the surface properties of the ground minerals. A complex massive sulphide, Cu-Zn, TAKNAR, Iran, was used for all the experiments. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of grinding media (dry or wet) on the pulp chemistry and recovery of Cu and Zn in bulk concentrate. 1100 g of ore samples were milled, and mill products with d80=85 and 75 micron in wet and dry grinding methods were produced. Rougher bulk flotation experiments were performed with 550g ore samples, at 30% solids. SIPX in conjunction with Aero238 in 1:2 ratio (48 g/t), was used as mixed collector system, and copper sulphate (200g/t) and MIBC (20 g/t) were employed as sphalerite activator and frother. Lime and High purity Oxygen gas were used for adjusting pH at 8.5 and aeration. The results showed that, more positive pulp potentials were measured when the feed had been ground in a dry environment, and the difference in pulp potentials between the dry and wet ground feed was approximately 250 mV after the grinding stage. In dry grinding method, the recovery of Cu and Zn increased approximately 5 and 10%, respectively. In addition, in dry ground samples, the volume of middling and coarse particles (+100 micron) were more and Dry ground flotation feed had better agreed with using a mixture of collectors. After using copper sulphate, pulp potential increased about 50 mV in dry and 75 mV in wet grinding methods. Keywords: grinding media, pulp potential, Cu-Zn massive sulphide, bulk flotation

The paper is focused on the optimal selection of grinding medium for a drum mill. The decision-making is based on the fuzzy multiple attribute approach. One way to optimize the grinding process in a tumbling mill is associated with the development and testing a new shape of grinding body. Family of new grinding bodies ? spheroidal tetrahedrons (tetraballpebs) has been manufactured. Two types of spheroidal tetrahedrons and a classical ball (sphere) with one and the same weight are compared. A fuzzy entropy method to calculate the weight of the attributes is suggested. At the present time, methods of mining and coal preparation produce tones of coal fines. The removal of water from these fines is necessary for economical and technological reasons. Supplementary processes that utilize different physical and chemical methods have been developed to in-crease the productivity of mechanical dewatering processes. Researches have shown that chemical reagents used along with conventional systems diminish moisture and increase the capacity and the yields of the dewatering method. In this study, the parameters of the vibrating screen (incline, frequency, feeding rate and screen size), the effects of the application of additional vertical mechanical vibration and surface active reagents (CTAB, SDS, Umectante B-70 and Kerosene) were investigated. At the end of the optimization experiments, 61.0% moisture was decreased to 42.3%. By keeping optimum conditions con-stant, the experiments have been conducted to determine most effective reagent. 41.2% moisture has been obtained with 5 g/t CTAB at the normal pH of the pulp, which were 7.25. By using vibrating screen with combination of the vertical vibrating mechanism, CTAB gave the best result of 40.7% moisture. Finally, the effect of increased surface area of the screen has been investigated and de-creased the moisture level to 38.7%.

N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) has already been proven a good solvent for extraction of coal. It is believed that organic components of coal are likely to be dissolved with the solvolytic power of NMP. During dissolution process, original coal also gets disintegrated and thus helps in further extraction. Coal extraction highly depends on temperature, coal to solvent ratio, N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) to Ethylenediamine (EDA) ratio and the size of coal particles. The process has been established in the laboratory. There is no reference available beyond lab scale. In present study, we are running a bench scale plant with 40 kg/batch capacity. Design of experiment was done in such a way that the optimum zone of the process gets evaluated for clean coal having low ash with high yield. Bench scale plant trial was conducted based on optimum zone developed during design of experiments (DOE). From the DOE analysis it was observed that feed size and coal to solvent ratio are important parameters for this process. Total 27 experiments (four factors with 3 level of variation) were designed through Box-Behnken model. It was observed that -0.5 mm feed size of coal, 150 °C extraction temperature, 17:1 NMP to EDA ratio, 1:9 coal to solvent ratio was optimum conditions. The results obtained at optimum conditions are 50% clean coal yield with 5% ash.

The overall flow-sheet of producing chromium (III) sulfate is described in this paper. The suitable conditions of each process such as sintering, leaching, aluminum removal, reduction, and de-composition conditions were experimentally studied. The results show it is reasonable to produce chromium (III) sulfate with the flow-sheet pointed out in this research work. The final product is Cr2(SO4)3 solution contained 150~250g/L Cr.

The studies on the product finer than 12 mm due to crushing and sizing plant of Gol-e-Gohar Iron Ore mine showed which this material contains significant amount of valuable iron minerals. Based on the carried out experimental studies on representative samples of fine hematite iron ore, a processing flow sheet was designed to upgrade iron content. This plant is known as first hematite iron ore enrichment plant in Iran which the dry medium intensity magnetic separators (with magnetic field intensity 4500 gauss and high gradient) has been used. The main objective of the plant is production of high iron product with iron content more than 61% and weight recovery more than 55% from the feed with iron content of 54%. In this plant, at first material are screened by a single deck screen (6mm), then oversize particles is separated at one stage by magnetic separator, while undersize ones at two stages. Based on the results of experimental tests, a final high iron product with iron content of 62.4% and weight recovery 63.9% can be achieved. It should mention which the iron content can be enhanced through increasing the speed of magnetic separators especially at the part of separation of finer iron ore.

Liquid ? liquid reactions such as solvent extraction in hydrometallurgy and BTX extraction in petrochemical industry has long suffered from the long retention time mainly due to the limited interfacial area caused by the immiscibility between water and oil phase, requiring typically very large perfect mixer type reactors and tall adsorption towers. A novel spray reactor for immiscible liquids; that is the KISEI Nozzle Reactor (KNR) was introduced, enabling the drastic increase in the interfacial area between the reacting immiscible liquids. Various spray mechanisms were applied in materials processing, e.g. spray drying, powder metallurgy, and aerosol industry, but not in hydrometallurgy. The KISEI Nozzle Reactor(KNR) was fully developed and used in production of biodiesel from the immiscible triglycerides and methanol. An experience with a full production plant facility is briefly discussed in the current paper. With the fog-like methanol spray in oil medium, the trans esterification reaction was almost instantaneous, and transformed the traditional batch trans esterification process into a continuous production process. And above all, with no moving parts in the KISEI Nozzle Reactor (KNR), the process requires minimal operation and maintenance costs. It is difficult to remove arsenic and bismuth from antimony in the process of crude electro refining. The electro refining of antimony has been studied using ammonium fluoride-antimony sulphate electrolyte system. The Influence of temperature, current density and additives on arsenic and bismuth removal from crude antimony has been investigated in this paper. Optimum process parameters, namely, temperature of 25?, current density of 400A/m2, distance between anode and cathode of 50mm, electrolytic period of 24 hours, oxalic acid dosage of 10g/L and complexon III dosage of 0.2 g/L have been ascertained.

The increasing demand of the filler industry regarding fineness and better delaminated products led to the development of a series of different grinding machines, which differentiate basically by the grinding mechanism as well as the kind of classification. Spiral jetmills grind, as it is well known preferably by delamination, therefore a spiral jetmill with integrated dynamic classifier has been developed. Especially the enhancement of the functional properties of the used industrial mineral fillers is a factor of highly increasing importance. These properties are very often bound to the platy shape of the minerals expressed by the aspect ratio. The developed Spiral Jetmill shows sufficient ability for such delamination and therefore increases in aspect ratio. In a series of comparative tests the suitability and advantages of this system regarding achievable fineness down to the submicron range as well as the conservation or even improvement of the aspect ratio of different minerals has been studied. As an emphasis on the results application tests with certain materials in the plastics field have been conducted. Due to the fact that in this range the required specific energy for achieving the necessary fineness increases exponentially another target is to optimize the grinding efficiency. A special feed control system provides on one hand a sufficient load inside the mill to obtain maximum utilization of the applied energy and on the other hand to prevent the mill from overfilling and coming with this a poor classification. The integrated classifier is a combination of a high speed motor with directly attached classifier wheels. This unit on one hand grants the necessary high circumferential speed of up to 190 m/s for providing an exact top cut of the ultrafine products and on the other hand gives the required operational reliability for continuous operation. Hard grindable impurities, which enrich inside the mill chamber, can be rejected from the process leading to an even cleaner product. Comparative tests on a talc product with certain free quartz impurities showed a significant improvement of the final product with respectively low loss on rejected material. This effect again had a beneficiary impact on the suitability of the final product when used in plastics application.

The effect of particle shape on the flotation process has been investigated in laboratory experiments with monosized spherical ballotini and roughly ground ballotini. The particles were treated by partial methylation with trimethylchlorosilane to achieve varying degrees of hydrophobicity. In flotation, the process of film thinning and liquid drainage is critical in the formation of a stable bubble-particle attachment and this is affected by the particle shape and surface hydrophobicity. The rate of attachment affects the overall flotation rate. Flotation tests with different particle sizes at various degrees of partial methylation have been performed in a modified Denver cell. Predictions from a computational fluid dynamic model of the cell which incorporates fundamental aspects of bubble-particle attachment are compared against flotation test results. Contact angles of the particles have also been measured using the capillary rise technique to indicate surface hydrophobicity.

Thiol collector mixtures are commonly used in the flotation of base metal sulfides and platinum-bearing ores. There are synergistic benefits claimed for these collector mixtures, with mixtures lowering total dosage requirements, improving coarse particle recovery and the rate of flotation. Some of the secondary collectors are known to have frothing effects. Therefore, a previous study aimed to decouple froth and pulp effects and considered only the bubble-particle attachments in the pulp. This was achieved through microflotation experiments, where various ratios of the ethyl and isobutyl chain lengths of xanthates, dithiocarbamates and dithiophosphates were used as collectors. Results from these experiments showed a marked increase in galena recovery using mixtures of xanthate with either dithiophosphate or dithiocarbamate. In the current study, the froth phase was introduced in the form of batch flotation studies to determine whether benefits noted during microflotation experiments would be carried through to a more realistic froth flotation scenario. The findings show that there was no significant difference in the flotation recovery between the best single collectors and mixtures of these collectors. In addition, single collectors that behaved poorly in microflotation experiments showed good flotation performance in the batch flotation experiments. The differences between the microflotation results and the batch flotation results are attributed to differences in particle froth stabilizing properties and/or differences in energy input between the microflotation and batch flotation cells. Slag and by-products of metallurgy bear valuable components and their processing raises an in-creasing interest. Coke and iron have to be separated and other components have to be depressed, in order to obtain sellable high quality copper concentrates. Use of classical mineral processing technologies, such as magnetic separation, sulphidization, hydrometallurgy, etc. yields copper concentrates with grade of 4%~6% Cu. Copper is lost in tailings and the whole technological cycle is low profitable. Technology proposed applies an electrochemical treatment of the industrial water entering the flotation cycle. Iron and iron compounds that do not bear Cu, coke and gangue materials are depressed during the copper flotation. Copper concentrate of grade of 9.8%~10% Cu is obtained at simultaneous increase of Ag recovery by 8%~10%. As a result company profitableness is increased. Technology proposed is easy to implement, it does not require changes in the existing technology flow-sheet, and additional investment is low. The flotation process can be aided by a specially developed system for real-time analysis of the obtained copper concentrate which allows in-time corrections in the flotation parameters and entire process control. Applied flotation schemes, technological parameters and results obtained are described.

"In Brazil, there are no official reserves of molybdenum, and the unofficial reserves are modest. Therefore, the molybdenum ore (molybdenite) produced as a co-product or by-product of emerald mining in the region of Campo Formoso, BA, has arisen as the only economic option. The flotation process is commonly used in Brazil for the recovery of molybdenite from emerald mining tailings, but it produces low-content molybdenite concentrates, thereby resulting in a product with low economic value. The molybdenite concentrate produced in Campo Formoso contains 83.5% MoS2 (50% Mo), which is less than the international standard product that contains > 90% MoS2 (54% Mo).This low value is due to the presence of talc, which is a naturally hydrophobic mineral that is also floated with the molybdenite during the flotation process. Separability studies were done in a Partridge-Smith cell using dextrin and quebracho as a molybdenite depressor in solution at different concentrations and pH values to produce a technical-grade concentrate (i.e., 90% MoS2). These basic studies were accompanied by measurements of the zeta potential and contact angle, which was determined by the capillary rise method. The results of these floatability studies were used in bench flotation tests, which were performed in a Denver laboratory flotation cell. A molybdenite concentrate of 93.4% MoS2 was obtained when dextrin was used at a concentration of 100 g/t."

The theory on particles displacement subjected to upwards and settling movements in water, using a water pulse, is described in literature, but very little experimental data is available to verify these theoretical ideas. The aim of this research work was to visualize the displacement of solid particles in a mixture of water and solid particles created with the aid of water pulses in the Mineral Density Separator. From the literature it is known that lighter particles are subjected to higher levels of displacement than heavier particles, and when the particles then settled down, layers of material are formed ac-cording to the densities of the material. By removing the individual material layers, the materials can then be separated according to their densities. During this study the individual material layers were investigated regarding the density and size distribution in that specific density layer. It is important for this project to have a statistical prediction of the ?real? flow of the particles with different density and size distribution, inside the Mineral Density Separator. The information gathered during this study will be used to show the correlation between a two dimensional model of the particle flow and that of the real three dimensional flow inside the Mineral Density Separator.

In this paper, the hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite particles produced with different laboratory mills has been studied; different grinding mechanism in themills made some changes in particles shape, Image Analysis (IA) method was used to determine the shape properties of chalcopyrite particles which are ground by a laboratory ball mill, rod mill and ceramic ball mill. The shape characters are stated in terms of shape factors such as circularity, convexity, roundness and regularity factor. Hallimond tube was used to float chalcopyrite particles followed by determination of critical surface tension of particles, this parameter used as a criterion to study the wetting behavior of chalcopyrite particles. The correlation between shape properties and critical surface tension of chalcopyrite particles showed that the hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite was affected by the shape. Investigations showed that the circular, round and more convex particles that produced with ceramic ball mill had lower hydrophobicity with higher critical surface tension (?c). The results also showed that the hydrophobicity of particles ground by ball and rod mills increased with the decrease of roundness, circularity, convexity and regularity factor of particles.
