This paper aims to present the evolution of the mining method in the Prince Lyell orebody. Initial strategy and practical experience are detailed as are the reasons for and benefits of changes to the method since 1972 when underground mining began. This section of the paper starts with ten series and concludes with 40 series which was completed in 1989/90.In addition, to update the series of papers written by various authors over the past ten years on Mount Lyell, a review of the experience in the current 50 series lift of mining will be given. As well, the basic planning guidelines are discussed for 60 series - the final lift of the Prince Lyell orebody.

The global recession of the 1980s drove commodity prices down and intensified cost competition. The 1990s saw a restructuring of the mining industry with the survivors adopting new technology, significantly increasing workplace productivity and reducing capital and operating costs. Major changes in mining industry business strategies evolved in the late-1980s including the development of miner - supplier - manufacturer - partnerships, cultural changes in work practices and common goals between the partners to reduce the cost of production. These industry trends are putting new demands on mining machine manufacturers and dealers both on the `hard' side of the machine business, such as research and product development programs, and on the `soft' side in terms of business processes, use of human resources and communication. The paper describes several mining industry trends as identified by a large supplier to the industry, and discusses the impact they are having, and will have, on mining machine development and the provision of product support services to the industry.

The concept of the circular economy has been gaining traction both in Europe and China.In Europe the Ellen Macarthur Foundation see their mission as accelerating the transition from a linear take-make-dispose economic model to a circular model that is restorative and regenerative by design, and aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times. The Chinese Circular Economy initiative is effectively a sustainable consumption and production program utilising cleaner production, industrial ecology and life cycle management approaches to meet the national challenges of maintaining rapid economic growth while simultaneously enhancing environmental quality and maintaining social progress. A key characteristic of both of these circular economy initiatives is to design out, reuse or minimise the generation of waste.The mining sector, by definition, is represented by linear rather than circular activities, by supplying resources to society. However, being one of the world’s largest waste generators, the sector can adopt similar logic to that of the circular economy to improve its sustainability performance. Waste is a critical issue along the whole metals value chain, from mining waste to eventual end-of-life products, such as scrap steel from construction and demolition waste or the growing problem of electronic waste.CITATION:Corder, G and Golev, A, 2016. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of froth fl otation for the recovery of gold from the gravity tailing stream of the former Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) operation in Ballarat. The P80 of the tailings was determined by screen analysis as 1 mm, with test work conducted on as received material along with samples ground to P80 sizes of 47, 78 and 134 microns. Laboratory scale batch flotation tests were conducted at both natural and elevated pH to investigate the impact of pyrite depression on gold recovery. Results indicated that although an increase in grade from approximately 0.7 g/t to 3 g/t was achievable at a natural pH and a P80 of 134 micron, gold recovery was low at just 35 per cent. Finer grind sizes were found to have an adverse effect on both grade and recovery. Future efforts will be focused on the sub 310 micron size fraction of the tailings, which was revealed to contain approximately 85 per cent of the available gold and may be amenable to cyanidation or ultra-fine gravity treatment.

Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along the Waiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of "platinum" were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS)and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni. R^~

Human ventures into space are entering a new phase in which missions formerly driven by government agencies are now being replaced by those led by commercial enterprises – in launch, satellite deployment, resupply of the International Space Station and space tourism. In the not-too-distant future, commercial opportunities will also include the mining of asteroids, comets, the Moon and Mars. This research examines the role of off-Earth mining in a growing space economy. In this investigation, the term ‘mining’ is taken to embrace minerals, ice/water and other in situ resources. As the off-Earth mining initiative could be the engine that drives the space economy, it would be useful to understand what off-Earth mining market conditions and technology requirements are needed for that economy to prosper. These specific elements are studied in the wider context of creating an economy that could ultimately support a sustainable Mars colony. "Check sampling programs were undertaken at Barrick Australia Pacific LimitedÆs Lawlers and Plutonic mine sites in Western Australia. The programs identified that the sampling, sample preparation and assaying protocols required modification to ensure acceptable precision (reproducibility) for each gold mineralisation type. These case studies describe the processes used to identify the: inconsistent precision different types of test work programs that were conducted to quantify the appropriateness for each mineralisation type steps used to modify the protocols.The type of test work conducted included: a duplicate series heterogeneity test for particulate gold mineralisation in the Lawlers gold deposit screen fire assay test work on duplicate subsamples for arsenopyrite associated mineralisation at the Plutonic gold deposit.Each test work program required a detailed scope specifying the sample selection criteria, sample preparation and assaying steps. The aim of the test work flow chart design was to ensure the assay precision between the different particle sizes or duplicate sample pairs could be measured and calculated. In the screen fire test work the true grade of the primary sample was calculated and compared against each subsample.A high quality assay laboratory was utilised for the test work. All samples were fire assayed and the gold grade determined using a gravimetric finish. The assay results were validated and the data was analysed using tables and graphs in spreadsheets. Following data analysis a modified sample preparation and assaying protocol for each mineralisation type was designed for use by the principal assay laboratories. The Australian Mineral Industry's growth in the last two decades is directly related to the skill and experience of its consultants in mining, metallurgy, geology, finance, management, marketing, and engineering. The role of mining consultants needs to be re-examined, so that the quality of the service they deliver will continue to be adequate for the 1990's. One means of this evaluation is by examining Case Studies in the strategies and difficulties of developing contract and entrepreneurial research.

Recent disasters such as the failure of the Mount Polley tailings embankment remind us of the risks that tailings facilities pose. It is widely recognised that dam-break assessments are a vital tool in identifying the consequences of the failure of a facility, which in turn can be used to develop emergency action plans. A typical assessment includes an estimation of breach parameters and outflow volume, followed by the preparation of an inundation map to illustrate potential flow extents and downstream impacts. This paper focuses on the estimation of outflow volumes, which is an area that the authors feel can be improved. Presently, many types of analyses assume that the volume of tailings released is only a function of the storage volume and dam height. After a review of several documented tailings failures, it has been found that the extent and depth of the supernatant pond needs to be considered as it is just as important, if not more so, as the storage volume and dam height. Tailings facilities with excess water storage have a higher risk of failure as they are more susceptible to overtopping, piping and liquefaction failures. In addition, they pose greater failure consequences as the saturated conditions will lead to more material being mobilised.This paper has reviewed available information on a number of tailings dam failures and proposes an alternative estimation of potential tailings release volumes as a function of supernatant water stored on the facility for use in dam-break analyses. The Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold-silver deposit, located 520 km NNW of Adelaide, S.A. was discovered by Western Mining Corporation Ltd in 1975, and is now being developed as a joint venture between WMC (5107o) and the BP Group (4907o). The discovery of this deposit resulted from the application of a conceptual model for the formation of sediment-hosted copper deposits. This model postulated that the oxidation of basaltic rocks could release significant amounts of copper into solution and that, under favourable conditions, these solutions might pass upwards along faults, and the copper be precipitated in reduced- facies sediments higher in the sequence. The Stuart Shelf province was chosen for exploration because geological interpretation suggested the presence of suitable basal- tic source rocks at depth, and favourable host sedimentary rocks in the overlying sequence. The Olympic Dam site was selected for drill-testing because of the presence of coincident gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies suggesting the presence of basalts and/or mineralisation at depth. This site also had a favourable tectonic signature, indicating the presence of deep crustal structures which might have allowed fluid migration.

El Teniente Mine started the exploitation of the primary rock in the beginning of the 1980s decade, using caving methods. Since the beginning the mining activities have induced seismicity including some occasional rockbursts. Owing to the relevant damages, the mining operations were stopped in some production sectors. This paper describes the concepts that have been used in order to control the induced seismicity based on the strategies for controlling the rockmass breaking process, which depend on mining parameters. It also presents the main concepts applied in the Teniente Sub6 sector design and the experience collected during its sector exploitation.

Mine planning is a crucial part of all mining industry projects, and nowadays, geometallurgical mapping through advanced computer technologies provides an opportunity to involve metallurgical responses of a deposit into 3D block model in order to optimise mine planning activities, especially for production forecasting. Including these metallurgical parameters apart from traditional geology and grade-based attributes into resource modelling leads to an extensive approximation for the economic maximisation of mine production due to better forecasting, planning and increasing certainty and the reliability of the resource model (Macfarlane and Williams, 2014). Commonly, geostatistical techniques and algorithms are used to produce models with the high resolution (Brissette et al. 2014; Deutsch et al. 2014; Tolosana-Delgado et al. 2015). The accuracy of the modelling procedure deeply depends on a reliable block model, produced by spatial analysis of corresponding variables that define the geological, metallurgical, mineralogical and chemical behaviour of the deposit. However, there are special cases, where the application of enhanced geostatistical methods is required, to solve the occurred difficulties between variables with multivariate complexities. For example, in oxide copper deposits, the soluble copper grade is a percentage of total copper grade and recoverable by heap leaching processes (Emery, 2012; Hosseini and Asghari, 2015). Block modelling is a well-established method for modelling ore reserves as a basis for strategic mine planning and mine development. Off-Earth mining, particularly of asteroids, can benefit from block models; however, the significantly different characteristics of asteroids and their methods of mining require reconsideration of the geometry and annotations of block models. Terrestrial block models consist of rectangular prisms within Euclidean coordinate systems. Their labels and parameters typically include location within a mine-specific coordinate system, x, y and z dimensions, specific gravity, hardness, grades of metals of interest and so on.These data provide an input to mine design and strategic mine planning. Mining asteroids may require different coordinate systems (eg spherical, elliptical or cylindrical, rather that Euclidean) and attributes that vary from Earth-based block models. These include: variable gravitational vectors throughout the block modelrotational moment or accelerationrotation rates. Materials within asteroids may show different isotopic compositions. Asteroid mining has the unique characteristic of a mine being identical with an asteroid. The position of the asteroid/mine in space and its full orbital elements provide critical inputs to mission design and costing. Hence, the block model concept needs to be extended with this metadata. The orbital position and behaviour of the Earth must be included for active mine planning, and increasing automation of mine planning and operations needs to consider terrestrial weather and telecommunications infrastructure. Financial planning requires analysis of the net present value of extraterrestrial mining compared with terrestrial alternatives, so a fully automated mining enterprise should integrate terrestrial and extraterrestrial block models at different scales and resolutions. As demand for optimisation of mining processes increases, more attention is drawn to blast performance and fragmentation improvement. Fractures and discontinuities are among the most influential factors in blast results, therefore one of the initial steps towards blast optimisation is to gather information about the rock mass and integrate it in blast design. This paper presents a method for assessment of rock mass discontinuities and integrating it in production blasts in the Aitik open pit copper mine in Sweden.3D photogrammetric techniques were utilised to map discontinuities and distinguish domains of similar geologic structures in the pit. As a pilot study for a future campaign, four different initiation directions were tested through six pilot blasts in one of the domains. The results were compared in terms of swell and loading efficiency of rope shovels to identify the correlation between blast performance and initiation direction compared to major discontinuity families.It was established that in the trial domain, blasts initiated towards north or north-west yielded larger swell and better performance of loading. Comparing these blasts with discontinuity families show that there is a correlation between blast performance and initiation direction according to the dip and strike of these discontinuities. Thermal and metallurgical coal mining in Queensland has resulted in mines which contain voids due to open cut mining. While there are several proposals for greenfield coalmines or expansions to existing operations, many existing open cut coalmines are reaching maturity and most will leave one or more residual voids in place. The rehabilitation of mine voids is challenging. Water held in voids will evaporate over time leaving solutes to concentrate. This is likely to lead to poor water quality with limited practical use. The most basic practices to rehabilitate voids have historically involved stabilising the high and low walls, bunding to provide flood protection, and preventing public access. Regulatory reforms for mine rehabilitation were introduced in Queensland as part of the Mineral and Energy Resources (Financial Provisioning) Act 2018, and aimed to strengthen progressive rehabilitation planning, limit risks to the environment and improve outcomes for local and regional communities. Under the reforms, the goal for rehabilitation of voids is to achieve a safe, stable, and non-polluting landform, which can sustain a post-mining land use (PMLU). The reforms also introduced a requirement to describe rehabilitation of mined land in Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure (PRC) plans, replacing the description of such plans in Environmental Authorities (EAs). The reforms are not retrospective and recognise historic approvals for voids, meaning established voids will remain in the landscape as non-use management areas (NUMAs). Maintaining catch berm capacity in open pit mines through controlled blasting prevents production delays associated with managing risks associated with wall instability. A method has been developed to quantify the drill hole deviation of presplit holes at Century Mine. Different controlled blasting techniques are used to control wall quality and decrease the risk. The performance of presplit drilling, in terms of deviation from design has been investigated. A methodology has been developed to quantify the drill hole deviation in three dimensions. This methodology was converted into a series of algorithms capable of handling an extensive range of data. The methodology was applied to a case study at Century Mine to evaluate the performance of drilling on two presplit blasts. Overall, 67 drill holes were investigated in the case study. The drill hole deviation was quantified in terms of three parameters: skewness, linearity and drill hole deviation parameter. Methods for quantifying each parameter were developed. Skewness, a measure of the amount of curvature and linearity, was defined as the measure of the consistency of the gradient of the drill hole. Drill hole deviation parameter is defined as the average measured deviation of the surveyed drill hole position from the design position. Acceptable drill hole deviation tolerances for each of the defined parameters were developed by analysing drill hole deviation parameters with respect to implications to catch berm capacity. Verification of the methodology was confirmed through the comparing of the completed drill hole deviation results using both visual inspection and cross analysis for each of the three methods. Holes with an R squared value of less than 0.97 for skewed deviation were classified as having skewed deviation, while holes with a difference in gradient of 3.5 were classified as having linear deviation. The results show that 76 per cent of the drill holes had deviation. Of this, 19 per cent were skewed, 57 per cent had linearity and 12 per cent contained both skewed and linearity deviation.

With the recent emphasis worldwide on environmental protection and sustainable development, finding an enriched mineral deposit no longer guarantees mining development. Only if the identified resource can be exploited in an environmentally-friendly manner is it possible that a mine may be developed. Designed primarily to aid with exploring for similar deposits of a particular type, traditional genetic ore deposit models tend to ignore the fact that all mineral deposits are characterised by type-specific environmental signatures. In fact, how an ore deposit can be mined, the commodities of interest extracted and the resultant mine wastes managed are all largely dictated by the geology and mineralogy as well as the environmental setting of the deposit. An environmental ore deposit model integrates such related information to identify the environmental challenges associated with mining an ore deposit of a particular type and facilitates the selection a suitable combination of methods to minimise environmental risks and impacts. Given that environmental management consumes a large portion of the budget for a modern mining project, making informed decisions at all stages of mining development can reduce the overall project cost. Through case examples, this paper demonstrates how environmental ore deposit models may be useful in mine permitting, active mining and in site decommissioning. It is only through an innovative and flexible approach that the mining industry can shed its tarnished image and gain the social license to mine.

The Nelson province was chosen as the prime area for rhenium sampling, based on its mineral associations. Sample preparation involved benefication by grinding and flotation A modification of published procedures for rhenium analysis was developed and the results compared with those obtained for molybdenum on the same samples using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results of the analysis for both metals is discussed and the relationships between rhenium and the molybdenum mineralisa- tion of this region is commented on. A metal- 1ngenic province is defined for molybdenum and r'.ienium and the tectonic setting for this is discussed. Some consideration has been given to rhenium possibilities in Fiordland and the Coromandel Range.

Squeezing extra performance from existing equipment (‘sweating the assets’) is key to continuous improvement initiatives, particularly during times of cost cutting where the option of spending additional capital to facilitate circuit upgrades can be severely constrained. A common challenge, however, is identifying the best combination of settings for different process variables, as their effects can be camouflaged by interactions with other process variables and, of course, noise in historical data.This paper describes a recent investigation at Boyne Smelters Limited to identify strategies to coarsen the product of its dry, fixed-speed, open-circuit AG mill, without the need for installing pre-screens prior to the mill. The product is used as insulation material for the reduction of alumina to aluminium, and an excessively fine product was inhibiting the ability of the cover material to dissipate heat from the underlying anodes. The approach was to undertake a series of experiments, designed according to statistical criteria, to elucidate the effect of key process variables (feed blend and power draw) upon the product sizing. The results provided clarity about what strategies would encourage the production of a more desirable mill product (with some surprises). This study details a mineralogical and textural characterisation of West African iron ores with an emphasis on their behaviour during mineral processing. By means of both qualitative and quantitative characterisation, a simulation of the beneficiation process applied to these iron ores is performed. A series of different analytical tools are used, including:X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) for qualitative mineralogical analysis;• qualitative optical microscopy (phase identifi cation, description of micro-textures) and (semi)• quantitative optical microscopy (counting of particles, phases and textural types); and• chemical analysis.All the information provided by these analytical methods are combined into a quantitative mineralogical and textural analysis, here called ‘modal analysis’, which enables us to simulate the capability of West African iron ores to be benefi ciated by magnetic and gravimetric separation techniques.On one hand, both qualitative XRD and optical microscopy have revealed the presence of the following mineralogical phases: magnetite, haematite, goethite and quartz. On the other hand, the chemical analyses provide us with quantitative inputs expressed as oxides. We have converted the oxides into mineralogical contents expressed as magnetite, haematite, goethite and quartz. In this way, we build a simple quantitative mineralogical analysis.Beside this, the semi-quantitative approach of the characterisation by optical microscopy also provides us with a liberation study, enabling us to split the gangue-bearing content between two types of particles:1. liberated gangue-bearing particles, and2. composite particles composed by both iron (oxhydr) oxides and gangue-bearing minerals.We have assumed that we could anticipate the behaviour of these two kinds of particles through a mineral process, by simulating the removal of at least the liberated particles of gangue. Optical microscopy also revealed a trend in the weathering profi le of the Tokadeh ore horizon with a decrease from bottom to top of magnetite and an increase of both goethite and martite showing a higher level of oxidation and hydration in the upper ore horizon.We have applied this removal extent upon the quartz content of the mineralogical quantitative analysis and we have re-calculated the quantitative mineralogical analysis considering the expected decrease in the quartz content. Finally, by converting the re-calculated (oxhydr) oxides contents into iron grades and summing them, we do obtain a fi nal simulated iron grade for the upgraded products.
