Coal oil mixture (COM), a liquid fuel pro- duced by mixing together coal and heavy oil on the 50-50 basis, has been brought to a level of practical use in Japan, being actually employed by a oil fired system at Yokosuka Thermal Power Station of The Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. A COM Production Plant, built in Onahama which is located about 160 miles from Yokosuka, required COM to be transported by sea. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. therefore performed a series of studies to develop a spe- cialized COM carrier, the world's first of its kind. Long lasting high stability is of pri- mary importance to successful use of COM. Much have been done in the way of research on stability of COM in the static storage, and the mechanism of COM static: stability is almost completety known. On the other hand, the knowledge about the COM dynamic stability, such as the stability while being transported aboard the COM carrier at sea, is still limited at the moment. The motion of COM aboard the COM carrier and how COM would settle were studied by tests. A visualization test on the COM behavior under dynamic motion was also performed and the mechanism of COM dynamic stability was analysed. The tests showed that the ship rolling motion had @n effect of promoting the settling of coal content of COM in the cargo hold. And studies were also made to device a method for esti- mating the settling quantity of coal during sea Transportation.

Axial flow fans are commonly used as auxiliary fans in underground mines to supply air to development headings. As diesel dilution requirements increase the fans used in conjunction with ventilation bags are becoming larger in diameter to move greater quantities of air over greater development distances. It is not uncommon for mining operations to sometimes use a number of these larger auxiliary fans with high airflow capacity in parallel as primary fans for the operations. These primary fan stations are often considered temporary installations and the fan selection and fan station design is rarely optimised. These temporary installations may become permanent resulting in an inefficient or unreliable primary ventilation system. A recent study looked at the likely causes of multiple primary fan failures at one operation with axial fans installed as primary units where the fan selection and fan station aerodynamic design was far from optimal. This paper explores some of the typical mechanisms of failure such as high pressure stall, unbalanced airflow, and fan tip speed as well as fabrication material. The paper proposes a number of good practise principles that should be considered during the design of a fan station. A second topic covered is the advantages and disadvantages of using different types of fans such as axial, mixed flow and centrifugal units. Here the concept of fan specific speed and its relevance to fan selection is discussed. Finally the paper quantifies the effect of using a high pressure auxiliary fan as a primary fan in a low pressure circuit, which may increase the mineÆs operation cost.CITATION:van der Sandt, J, van den Berg, L and Roughsedge, D, 2013. This brief overview of the history of Brown Coal mining in Victoria is a luncheon presentation -I do not intend to make it indigestible with extensive listings of resources or production. There is a vast pantry of collated historical records and of vari- ous predictive studies available for the enquired with a hearty digestion. A gourmet collation is provided in The Aus IMM Monograph No 11 published in 1984 entitled "Victoria's Brown Coal-A HUGE FORTUNE IN CHANCERY", currently still on offer by the Institute and available at a bargain price in the foyer at this conference. Monograph No 11 also provides a feast of excellent references on the theme of Victorian Brown Coal assembled by the several contributors. In contrast, my presentation paper is a fast-food service, extracts from the printed paper only-you have no choice-you "get what you get" and in small quantity. The Middle and Lower Yangtze River metallogenic belt is one of the most important polymetallic resource areas in China. Iron oxide-apatite deposits, mainly distributed in Ningwu and Luzong volcanic basins, are a distinct type of iron deposits in this region. These deposits have a close temporal and spatial relationship with Mesozoic dioritic porphyries and are characterised by magnetite-apatite-pyroxene/actinolite ± anhydrite assemblage and large-scale sodic-calcic alteration.Widespread multiphase inclusions in pre- to main-mineralisation stage pyroxene and garnet in Meishan (in the Ningwu basin), Luohe and Nihe (both in the Luzong basin) iron deposits were trapped at ~780°C in extremely saline brines (~90 wt per cent NaCl equivalent), consisting of Na (13–24 wt per cent), K (7–11 wt per cent), Ca (~7 wt per cent), Fe (~2 wt per cent), Cl (19–47 wt per cent) and SO4 (3–39 wt per cent), based on petrologic, microthermometric, Raman spectroscopic studies and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of natural fluid inclusions and synthetic analogues. The high Cl/Br, Na/B and S/B ratios in brine inclusions and the heavy sulfur isotopic values of anhydrite and pyrite (d34SAnh = +15.2 to +16.9‰, d34SPy = +4.6 to +12.1‰) suggest a significant contribution from both halite- and anhydrite-bearing sedimentary rocks. The involvement of evaporites caused the production of large amounts of high-salinity brines with apparently enhanced capacity to extract iron from the dioritic intrusions.According to their geologic features and the above characteristics, these iron oxide-apatite deposits are considered to be a special type of iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) deposits characterised by high contents of Na, Ca, Cl and SO4 in the ore-forming fluids. Early theories of coal formation are outlined, with special emphasis on the arguments for allochthony and autochthony. Various aspects of the nature, growth, and decay of the characteristic vegetation of the brown coal peat moors, their conversion into coal, the origin of banding, and the influence of tectonics are discussed.A description of the banding in Victorian brown coals is followed by a discussion of their vitrain, fusain, and natural carbonized coal; and concludes with the nature of the coal resin and the possibilities of its extraction.The nature and derivation of inorganic matter in brown coal, based on Lessing's classification, is described. Assimilation of mineral substances in specific plants with variations due to environmental factorsare illustrated by analyses of present day trees. Consideration is then given to possible sources of salt, marcasite, and quartz in brown coal.It is shown that part of the inherent and extraneous ash may have been removed during and after coal formation. The nature and abundance of the organically combined substances in brown coal emphasizes the anomalies that may arise from estimating the total inorganic matter from ash contents.After classifying deposits on external heating surfaces of boilers, theoretical and practical aspects of slag formation, alkali matrix deposits, and the effect of sulphur and chlorine are considered.Analyses of deposits in boilers burning Victorian brown coal are tabulated.Slagging at the Yallourn power station from sand in the Yallourn open cut, and difficulties with Yallourn North Extension coal at the Maryvale paper mills are described.Tests carried out on Morwell and Yallourn coals showed that with the former, impacted deposits formed on boiler heating surfaces, and left a high percentage of chlorides on probes. Black coals occur in most of the major sedimentary basins in Australia. In addition to the better known Permian coal occurrences of the Sydney, Bowen, Oaklands and Galilee Basins, coals of Permian age occur in the Arckaringa Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory and the Collie, Perth and Canning Basins in Western Australia and the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania. Coals of Triassic age occur in the Ipswich Callide and Tarong Basins in Queensland, the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania and the Leigh Creek area in South Aus- tralia. Coal bearing rocks of Jurassic age occur in the Mulgildie Basin and Maryborough Basins in Queensland and in both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Clarence Moreton Basin and Surat Basins. They also occur in the Perth Basin in Western Australia. Rocks of Cretaceous age known to contain coal occur in the Styx, Maryborough and Laura Basins in Queensland, the Gippsland Basin in Victoria and both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Surat Basin. The coal measures have been deposited in a variety of sedimentary environments and the coals vary widely with regard to thickness, extent, banding characteristics, maceral and ash content. However, they are generally of low rank and most are suitable only for steaming.

Lithocaps are potentially voluminous zones of advanced argillic and associated argillic alteration located above the subvolcanic intrusive environment. They constitute exploration objectives for epithermal and porphyry-type deposits. High-sulphidation epithermal deposits may be sought within lithocaps, whereas low-sulphidation deposits may exist on their edges. Porphyry Cu-Au/Au deposits may be accessible beneath lithocaps if systems are telescoped sufficiently. Oxidation of the basal, pyritic parts of lithocaps may promote supergene sulphide enrichment under appropriate tectonic and climatic conditions.

At New Celebration Gold Mine the advent of treating primary sulphide ores resulted in decreased gold recoveries of four to ten per cent. The grind coarsened due to an increase in ore hardness and gold in the residue was found to be associated with pyrite. Finer grinding improved recoveries but was impractical as production rates would have decreased to unacceptable levels. An alternative approach that has proved to be viable combines both gravity separation, to recover the coarse gold bearing sulphides, and then regrinding the concentrate in a tower mill prior to releaching in the cyanide leach circuit. The tailings treatment plant was commissioned in December 1990 and details of the first 18 months' operations are Provided.

Advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) typically have much higher aluminium concentrations (by an order of magnitude or more) than conventional low-carbon aluminium-killed steels. The resulting lower oxygen activity at the steel-slag interface changes the kinetics and thermodynamics of steelslag reactions. Previous work showed that the rapid transformation of alumina inclusions to spinel inclusions, and spinel to periclase, occurs because of the relatively high concentration of dissolved magnesium. In this paper, experimental results on nitrogen removal by ladle slag are compared with predictions based on the available thermodynamic databases. As in previous work, the kinetics was modelled by assuming mass transfer control, with steel or slag mass transfer limiting. The results show that significant removal of nitrogen by steel-slag reaction is possible.

It is generally known that Charters Towers was discovered by Mosman, Clarke and Fraser in 1871. However, the time was ripe, and these three were barely in front of others. There is one account that prospectors from Ravenswood visited the area months before but decided it was too far from water, and that one of them had told Mosman and party of the find. There is another account that Joe Larkins found the discoverers before they had registered any ground - this may explain Mosman's quick departure for Ravenswood.When the news spread, the rush was rapid, and there was soon a sizeable population: probably too many, as within twelve months the infant settlement was under considerable stress. First, the presiding Gold Commissioners had adopted "unusual and arbitary" interpretations of the Regulations, and many of the miners were aggrieved; Charters, the senior Commissioner, was accused of favouring moneyed interests, and of retiring ill whenever a brawl or confrontation occured. As a result, the law of the field soon became "the survival of the strong". Second, the settlers were, divided on where the main town should be: Millchester, near the water, or Charters Towers near the mines. Third, the discovery of gold at the Millchester Deep Lead in August, 1872 was followed by highly exaggerated accoants in_' the southern papers, apparently fabricated by local business speculators. The resulting rush resulted in hundreds of unlucky prospectors having to return or seek other fields. In that period two men were killed in squabbles over ground. To make matters worse, by October 1872 a drought had set in, water cost three pence a bucket, fodder was scarce, cartage expensive, and the price of crushing ore rose to thirty shillings per ton.

The Bau Goldfield lies in the southwestern corner of Sarawak in East Malaysia. Evidence of past mining in the form of open pits and adits can be found over an area of 250 sq kin, centred on the township of Bau. Chinese were mining gold in the district as early as 1820. The Bau Goldfield so far has produced approximately two million ounces of gold, from alluvial deposits and over 50 hard rock mines. The largest single producer was the Tai Parit mine (700 000 oz) which was operated by the Borneo Company from 1898 to 1921 and by a local Malaysian family from 1991 to early-1997. Over the past ten years, gold resources totalling around one nullion ounces have been delineated through systematic exploration using modern techniques, with the bulk of the resource hosted in two deposits (Jugan and Pejiru).Triassic to Jurassic andesitic volcanics and coeval intrusives are the oldest rocks that crop out in the Bau Goldfield. These igneous basement rocks are unconformably overlain by 500 m of late Jurassic, massive, micritic limestone which in turn is overlain by a 1500 in thick flysch sequence, composed mainly of shale. Basement rocks and limestone are exposed along the hinge of a ENE-striking anticline that passes through the Bau district (Bau Anticline). A NNE-striking belt of Miocene granodiorite porphyry stocks and dykes also passes through the Bau Goldfield. All of the known gold deposits lie within 5 km of this zone of intnisives, with a concentration of deposits at the intersection of the intrusive hell with the Rau Anticline.

In order that the processes seen may be followed in their proper 'order, the subject will be dealt with as follows, (1) Wallaroo and Moonta Mines; (2) Wallaroo and Moonta Mines Smelting Works; (3) Broken Hill Mines; (4) Concentration at Broken Hill; (5) Smelting and refining of Lead, Silver, and Gold at Port Pirie. The first acquaintance with the copper region was made at the Yelta shaft and dressing mill of the Parramatta Copper Mines Co. at Moonta. The country rock at Moonta is a hard, tough, felsitic porphyry, the copper lodes having a general strike of N. 30° Kilipping from 500 to 70°. This necessitates shaft-sinking on the lode, and underlay shafts are the rule on the field. The ore is raised in the Yelta shaft in wheeled skips, and consists of ·chalcopyrite, bornite, pseudomorphic hematite, containing, in addition, molybdenite and tourmaline. The ore from the bins at the brace is passed over a grizzly; the over-size is hand-picked into smelting ore, concentrating ore, and waste rock (00 attle ), which is sent below for filling. The under-size is elevated to a trommel having in. holes. The over-size falls on to a picking belt made up of lengths of rope strapped with iron, working over wooden pulleys.

The use of hydrogen as a reducing agent can substantially reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the ironmaking process. Iron ore fines can be reduced in a fluidised bed (FB) using hydrogen (H2) at high temperatures (>800°C), although several studies have reported the sticking of particles which causes the bed to defluidise, effectively shutting down the process. Here, we report results from the reduction of New Zealand (NZ) titanomagnetite (TTM) ironsands in a small-scale laboratory FB (100 g) at temperatures between 800–1000°C using H2 flow rates up to 5 standard L/min. No sticking phenomena are observed under any of these conditions, which is attributed to the formation of a stable titanium-bearing oxide layer on each particle’s exterior, preventing iron-iron contact at the particle surfaces. Pre-oxidised NZ TTM ironsands have also been studied and shown not to stick. Interestingly, at lower reaction temperatures the reduction kinetics for pre-oxidised ironsands is faster than for as-received ironsands. This increased kinetic rate can be attributed to the preoxidation stage inducing micro-fractures that create a void for the hydrogen to diffuse into the inner regions of the particle. In addition, oxidation of TTM appears to segregate the particle into two distinct phases, a high Aluminium-Magnesium (Al-Mg) phase and a high Titanium (Ti) phase. The findings are important as increasing the operating temperature of the FB reactor results in a faster reaction rate and higher gas utilisation, making the process more economically attractive. Furthermore, oxidation of NZ TTM ironsands results in a faster reduction rate at lower temperatures (800°C– 900°C) opening the opportunity to reduce the reaction temperature which might be beneficial in a final commercial-scale process.

Excavator output rates given in Makers' catalogues are sometimes based on favourable operating conditions. Mine operators and planners are more interested in the Effective Hourly Output in normal operation (Qe) a plant system can give hour by hour and year after year in a particular application. The number of hours mining plant will be available for normal operation will be less than the annual total of 8760 h. The number of the available hours which can be utilised at Qe will depend largely on the number and types of units in the plant system, the manners in which they are applied and the nature of the deposit in which they work. The emphasis herein is on continuous systems for deep stripping with BWE's as the primary excavator. Examples and suggestions are given for the annual hours at Qe for some BWE systems.

Industries that handle and process ‘dusty’ ores are facing increasingly difficult challenges to ensure sustainable operation and development. Most existing dust-control measures treat only the symptoms of dust generation and do not deal with the root cause/s of the problem. Many of these methods are also relatively inefficient in terms of controlling dust emissions. This paper summarises the various existing options available for dust control and some of their features, advantages and disadvantages. It then describes some of the new technologies that are being researched, developed and employed to minimise dust emissions by addressing dustability or dustiness and the dust generation mechanisms found in industry. Recent research results and case studies are presented to demonstrate some interesting findings obtained from this work. Mining of the Martha Hill epithermal gold deposit via open pit methods will excavate a pit to 15 m below sea level. Regular geotechnical evaluations of pit slopes have taken place. Details of the various components of these evaluations, including geological structure, material strength, and groundwater, are covered. Pitwall geological structures are represented clearly on pit floor grade control maps with the dominant sets being steeply dipping strike fractures. Cross cutting shears are common. Material strength is reflected by the oxidation status of the hydrothermally altered host rocks, with weaker material occurring in partially oxidised ground. Regional groundwater is generally high, particularly on the north-eastern side of the pit, where it has been little affected by de-watering. Geological structures appear to control the flow of groundwater in the proximity of pitwalls and require draining by the introduction of horizontal drains. An overview of pit slope design is given. Slopes are designed for overall slope stability, allowing for the occurrence of minor interbench failures.

The correct selection of equipment to use in a mine is a problem which constantly faces the mining engineer. In some cases a wide choice of equipment with different operating characteristics is available. If this equipment is to be used to assist in moving the ore it may be possible to build a computer simulation model to predict how it will perform. Typical problems that lend themselves to this type of analysis are presented. The computer models are constructed using a recent form of the GPSS computer language, namely GPSS/PC for the personal computer. This language allows the programmer to construct models in a very short time and at a low cost. Of great importance is the easy way in which it is possible to change the models to answer any of the "what if?" questions the engineer may pose.

The Lachlan Fold Belt (LFB) is a complex orogenic belt which developed in Early to Mid Palaeozoic time. A number of orogenies and more localised deformational events affected the region. A simplified classification scheme for the diverse gold deposit types is proposed, subdividing primary mineralizing processes into four categories: volcanism (epithermal and volcanogenic deposits), igneous intrusion (subvolcanic/porphyry style, skarn and magmatic deposits), metahydrothermal processes (deposits generated during metamorphism and regional deformation) and hydrothermal-distal processes (deposits generated by poorly understood, generally remote large scale hydrothermal processes). Major gold deposit associations include epithermal and porphyry style deposits in Ordovician-Early Silurian shoshonitic andesite sequences; volcanogenic base metal-gold deposits in Silurian rift or basin felsic sequences; vein deposits in Late Silurian and Early Devonian S and I-type granitoids; deposits in Early Devonian sedimentary rocks of the Cobar Basin probably generated by metahydrothermal processes during basin closure and cleavage formation; deposits associated with serpentinite; and metahydrothermal quartz vein deposits in folded sedimentary rocks.Studies of host rock geochemistry suggest a relationship between magma types, gold enrichment and mineralization particularly in shoshonitic sequences and Early Devonian granitoids of the Boggy Plain Supersuite. Structural studies indicate the importance of thrust type structures and detachment faults in generation and location of gold mineralization. Lead isotope initial ratios help define metallogenic associations and a number of distinctive isotope "signatures" have been established.

"It is widely accepted that bulk ore sorting could provide a step change in processing of low-grade ores. For this to be achieved a rapid, accurate bulk sensor of grade is required as well as sufficient natural variation of grade in the ore stream. CSIRO trialled a magnetic resonance (MR) sensor capable of measuring chalcopyrite, and by inference total copper grade, on the 1300 t/h Ridgeway portal conveyor. The gauge produced an unprecedented set of data down to a 1 t scale for months at a time. This paper analyses the measured variation and compares it to a simple model derived from the bore core data and mixing within the block cave mine.The model of the small-scale (<1000 t) variation is developed using fractal methods which have successfully been used in the past for copper porphyry deposits showing a power law or near power law distribution of copper grade and vein sizes. These fractal distributions have two features highly favourable for segregating ore, a large proportion of low-grade pods and the large-scale spatial clustering of grade. We show the presence of fractal ordering in bore core data at short range in the Cadia Ridgeway porphyry deposit and measure its persistence in the crushed rock produced by the Ridgeway block cave mine over one month.
