The Climax Molybdenum Company' s newest operation is the Henderson project, which is located on the east side of the Continental Divide. Ore reserves are estimated at more than 300 million tons at a grade of 0.49% MoS2. For mining the ore a modified panel caving system is used. The ore is transported to the Henderson mill on the west side of the Continental Divide on a 42 in. (1.07 m) gauge railroad through 9.6 miles (15.4 km) of tunnel and 4. 8 miles (7.7 km) of surface track, a total distance of 14.4 miles (23. 2 km). Each train consists of 30 ore cars with capacity of 22 st (20 mt) of ore or 660 st (599 mt) per train. The unmanned trains operate completely automatically. At the 54 in. by 84 in. primary gyratory crusher, the bottom dump ore cars pass over a dump scroll to discharge at a maximum rate of 100 st (91 mt) per minute. Dumped ore falls onto a rock box before passing over a 17 ft long by 46 ft wide (5. 2 m by 14 m) grizzly set at a 40° angle with bar spacings of 7 ½ and 8 ½ in. (191 mm and 216 mm) openings. An estimated 30 to 50% of the ore (which at times is wet and sticky) passes through the grizzly. The operators report that a shallower angle on the grizzly, perhaps 35º to 37º, would have been sufficient and would have prevented impact on the back of the crusher pocket by large boulders. This pocket as well as the crushed ore pocket under the crusher is lined with AR plate. The accompanying drawings show a "future splitter" and the operators are planning the installation of this unit to prevent impact and subsequent damage to the crusher spider. Crushed ore at an 8 to 9 in. (203 mm to 229 mm) size joins the grizzly undersize in the pocket beneath the crusher. This pocket is sized at 660 live st (599 mt) so that it will accept an entire trainload of ore. Crushed ore is removed from the pocket by a four-speed, 84 in. (2. 1 m) apron feeder operating at 9.6 to 29. 3 fpm (2.9 to 8.9 mpm). A 60 in. (1.5 m) takeaway conveyor operating at 480 fpm (146 mpm) delivers the crushed ore to a 58,000 st live and 193,000 st total (52,600 and 175, 100 mt) open stockpile under an A -frame supported tripper gallery. Impact idlers on the takeaway conveyor under the apron feeder discharge are mounted on wood blocks for a cushioning effect and ripped belt detecting bars are located behind each impact idler. The conveyor tunnel is of corrugated and galvanized steel construction rather than concrete. The concrete crusher enclosure is circular in design from its lowest level at elevation minus 110 ft 4 in. IN this paper the authors aim to chronicle the experience and salient points brought out in changing flotation reagents at a concentrator which had probably been using a mininium amount of oil at a minimum cost per ton, to a more complicated system requiring a partial chemical control. The original oils were coal tar and pine oil. The new reagents are lime, xanthate and pine oil. It was found that there were no insurmountable difficulties and eventually the cost of the new reagents per ton of ore proved to be very little more than that of the old. LIME PLANT When the question of handling lime came up there were two propositions open: (1) to handle the lime dry; (2) to handle it wet in the form of an emulsion. Granting that a dry lime feeder would function properly, delivering lime uniformly, the chief objection was the dust that would be raised when these feeders were being charged or operated, as the only possible location was on a gallery beneath which men were working. With this objection the handling of lime as an emulsion seemed to be the better scheme. The lime plant which was first installed was for experimental work on one section. This was gradually changed and developed until it was of sufficient size to accommodate 20 sections. The various changes will not be discussed and the following description deals only with the fully developed plant. Crude as it is, and perhaps somewhat expensive to operate, the lime-handling plant has been quite successful. Much has been learned which will pave the way for a better installation in the future. Burnt lime is received loose in standard gage box cars. This is the product of the kilns and has had no screening or sorting. A grab sample is taken from each car as it is unloaded. THE copper concentrator of the Braden Copper Co. is at Sewell, Chile, on the western flank of the main Cordillera of the Andes, at an air distance of approximately 50 miles southeast of Santiago, the capital of Chile. The region is mountainous and space is at a premium because of the rough terrain and the danger of snowslides. The ore, a porphyry copper, is mined by a block-caving method in the El Teniente mine. It is hauled to the crushing plant, a distance of 2.6 miles, through a tunnel because of the severe climatic conditions. The usual large, coarsely set, primary reduction machines found in many ore-treating plants are not required because of the mining method employed and the limiting 12-in. spacing of the grizzlies at the head of each ore pass in the mine. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the numerous improvements made in the crushing section of this large flotation concentrator during the past 15 years to increase the efficiency of the plant and to raise the daily output from around 20,000 to 30,000 tons. The reader should keep in mind that all changes were made within the existing building because of the limited space and the high cost of the heavy mill construction required to withstand the snow loads. The present plant, as well as the former, operates on a 24-hr, 7 days a week basis. FORMER PLANT The crushing plant commenced operations at its present site in 1921, the main equipment being No. 7 1/2 gyratories, followed by 48-in. horizontal Symons disk crushers. Fines were removed by 1-in. stationary grizzlies ahead of each unit. In 1924 a third stage of crushing was provided by the addition of 55 1/2-in. rolls in open circuit. During 1925, the Symons disks were replaced by 73 1/2-in. rolls. All the rolls were changed to closed circuit, with elevators and screens to give a final product of 9 pct plus 3-mesh. The flowsheet of a typical crushing section of this period is shown in Fig I. The ore was withdrawn from a common bin serving the five crushing sections in the plant by means of any number up to six 36-in. wide-apron feeders, which discharged onto a common conveyor belt. This conveyor was equipped with a magnetic head pulley and the crusher attendant was stationed near the discharge end to pick out pieces of mine timber that might be in the ore. The ore was discharged over a 1 3/4-in. spaced bar grizzly and the oversize of this grizzly was crushed by a No. 7 1/2 McCully gyratory crusher set at 1 3/4-in. opening on the closed side. The grizzly undersize joined the gyratory discharge and was conveyed to a set of 73 1/2 by 20-in. Garfield rolls set at I in. These rolls operated in closed circuit with a bucket elevator and two vibrating screens placed in parallel.

(Cleveland meeting, October, 1912.) LARGE deposits of titaniferous iron-ore occur at Caribou, an old silver-mining camp in Boulder county, Colo., 17 miles west by south of Boulder, and a few miles northwest of the tungsten-mines. Professor Regis Chauvenet 1 published a part analysis of the ore many years ago, but gave no description of the wall-rock. Caribou hill, which contains both the silver-bearing veins and the iron-ore deposits, is a low dome of gabbro surrounded by the Archaean schists and gneisses of the Front range of the Rocky mountains, the peaks of which, a few miles west of Caribou, attain an elevation exceeding 12,000 ft. The gabbro stock is roughly elliptical in outline, with approximate diameters of 1 and 3 miles. The crest of the dome is 10,500 ft. above sea-level, and the town and ore-deposits are 500 ft. lower. Outcrops of the iron-ore occur in the town and extend NW. for 2,000 ft., where they disappear under the swampy meadows of Caribou park. Portions of the deposit are covered by drift, but one continuous outcrop is 900 ft. long and from 200 to 250 ft. wide. A second deposit is 0.25 mile south of the town along the eastern slope of the hill. It is not as well defined as the north bed, but is approximately 1,000 ft. long and from 100 to 200 ft. wide. The easily disintegrated ore does not form prominent outcrops, but the outlines of the deposits are readily traced by the large amount of ore fragments that cover the ground. Trenches and pits sunk on the outcrop expose a roughly banded magnetic iron-ore, with pyroxene as the principal gangue-mineral. The Gabbro. The aging characteristics of a titanium alloy containing 13 pct V, I1 pct Cr, and 4 pct A1 have been investigated by hardness measurements, X-ray diffraction, and metallography. The P phase decomposes into 0 + a, and 0 + a, + TiCr, above about 1050°F; below this temperature a transition phase, believed to be w, precipitates first, followed by a, and TiCr,. The observed hardening is attributed to these reactions. Cold working of solution-treated specimens accelerates hardening and raises the hardness level attained. A TTT diagram is proposed. NEW titanium-base alloys, designated as "all-beta," have recently been developed. These alloys contain large amounts of P-stabilizing elements such as molybdenum, chromium, or vanadium. When cooled from the solution temperature, they consist only of P; in particular, the martensitic a,' phase does not form.

Another increase in production and the discovery of new pools arc the outstanding developments of the year 1937. Production in 1937 totaled 16,354,706 bbl., compared to 15,457,953 bbl. in the previous year, an increase of 5.8 per cent, of which 5 per cent was due to the Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales (Argentine Governnlent Oil Fields) and 0.8 per cent t,o private companies. Table I shows that the most important gain in output was obtained in zone B of Comodoro Rivadavia, partly offset by a 5.7 per cent decrease in the Neuqu6n district. The fields of Salta and Mendoza show an increase of 4.4 and 39.1 per cent, respectively. This study investigated the nature of formation plugging with bacteria and attempted to relate its characteristics to physical rock properties. Fifteen core samples of four specific formation types were defined and plugged using a commonly occurring, uniform sized dead bacteria, Bacillus subtilis. Two of the formation types were fairly uniform-grained sandstones and two were heterogeneous carbonates. The injection rate and concentration of solids in the brine were held constant during the test runs. The pore geometry factor G was a significant petro-physical rock characteristic for correlation with depth of plugging, but lacked importance as a parameter for rate of plugging. Although the G factor may not completely describe porous rock geometry for plugging predictions, for reservoirs with multi-pore systems, there is evidence that the pore geometry factor might form a basis for establishing injection water specification in more llornogeneous reservoirs with only primary porosity development. INTRODUCTION GENERAL PURPOSE Injecting water into oil-bearing formations to increase recovery is common practice in the petroleum industry. One of the most serious operational problems involved with water injection wells is the tendency of the porous rock immediately adjacent to the injection wellbore to plug partially. This results in increased injection pressures and/or a decrease in the rate of injection. This plugging in injection wells can result from a number of causes, including bacteria contained in the injected water.1 The purpose of this work was to investigate the nature of injection plugging with bacteria and to attempt to relate its characteristics to physical rock properties. Many variables exist in research of this type, so, to reduce them, injection rate and concentration of bacteria in brine were held constant. The bacteria used for plugging was a uniform-sized, dead bacteria, Bacillus subtilis, a micro-organism commonly found in water, air and soils. Four specific porous rock types were plugged—two consolidated sandstones and two heterogeneous carbonates. The experimental work involved two distinct phases. The first concerned determining the physical rock properties and the second was the experimental work of actually plugging the selected core samples. PORE GEOMETRY FACTOR Capillary pressure is necessary to displace a wetting fluid from a capillary opening with a nonwetting fluid. The factors which govern capillary pressure are the surface or interfacial tension of the fluids involved, the system wettability and the equivalent pore radius. Thus: P,= 2ucososrd..........(1) Thomeer used the idea that the location and shape of the capillary pressure curve reflect characteristics of the pore structure of any porous media sample.' He presented the mathematical description of capillary pressure curves and of indicated differences in pore geometry of samples. where G = pore geometry factor PC = capillary pressure Pi = displacement pressure (V,)p, = fractional bulk volume occupied by the displacing fluid at any capillary pressure (V,), = fractional bulk volume occupied by the displacing fluid at infinite pressure or total interconnected pore volumes. The shape of the curve is defined by the pore geometry factor G. The curve shape is related directly to the sorting and interconnection of the pores of the sample. The location of an infinite number of curves can be defined by the same asymptotes. However, these curves differ in shape, each curve being described by a specific value of G. Thus, the description of a curve is unique when, in addition to the position of its asymptotes, its shape is defined. These curves can be used graphically to determine the characteristic parameters of any arbitrarily located curve. Those parameters that can be approximated from any capillary pressure curve are: (1) total interconnected pore volume, represented by (V,),- ; (2) extrapolated displacement pressure, the abscissa axis; and (3) pore geometry factor, by the curve shape. PROPERTIES OF BRINE AND BACTERIA The fluid used throughout this study was an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, 25,000 ppm by weight. The addition of salt to fresh water was intended to eliminate clay swelling in the sandstone cores and to retard leaching in the limestone cores. MOTHER example of the broad field that is covered by the mining industry is the recent erection by the Phelps Dodge Corp. of a modern hospital building at Douglas, Ariz., and an identical one at the rejuvenated mining town of Morenci. Managers of even small mining properties are often called upon to build schools, houses, stores, maybe a jail, and provide sanitary arrangements, possibly the while acting as mayor of the town. Those who direct larger properties may have to build hospitals, as in the present instance, construct sewage disposal plants, and sometimes even build and manage railroads. A mining camp achieves its reputation among mining men not entirely by the grade or amount of its ore, or the skill of the operating staff in mining and milling it at a profit-the operation soon acquires a reputation as either a desirable or an undesirable place to live, regardless of its remoteness from what is euphemistically termed civilization. Such a community is indeed fortunate if it can boast of a good hospital.

The 1963 Jackling Award lecturer describes the founding of Banner Mining Co. and its trials and tribulations before becoming an established firm. Such aspects as geological description of Banner mining areas, history of exploration and production, areas of present interest to the company and research work conducted by the company are included. Several years ago a wealthy Chinese business friend of mine purchased an interest in a proposed oil well to be drilled a great distance from his home. A few months later it came in as a producer and proved to be a huge success and materially added to his resources. I asked him why a man of his wealth should be so lucky in a venture outside his sphere of knowledge when most people of modest means never seemed to get ahead. His answer was, "Fat Hoy takes a chance." Even though this was his answer, I knew from my association with him that there were other tempering considerations which Mr. Hoy applied before making up his mind to enter any transaction. First, he was a cautious individual. He was also a great believer in details and insisted on knowing everything possible about a situation, and finally, he was what we call a very solid individual with good basic instincts and judgment. This philosophy of Mr. Hoy may be applied to most any business but especially to those engaged in a search for natural resources such as mining where great risks are involved. This article concerns events in the history and growth of Banner Mining Co., with which I have been associated for 27 years in capacities from mine surveyor to vice president. Mr. Hoy's philosophy has played a significant role in the exploration projects of this company over the years, but what is more important, the officers, directors, and controlling interests in Banner have been aggressive in their search for ore reserves. THE BIRTH OF BANNER Banner Mining Company was incorporated in September 1935 by a group of Oklahoma and Texas oil men for the purpose of exploring and developing the Bonney-Manilla mines at Lordsburg, N.M. These properties had a history of intermittent production since the first ore discoveries as far back as 1870. Most of the production from the district has come from four mines, namely, the Eighty-Five, the Atwood, the Bonney-Manilla, and the Misers Chest. The last two are now owned by Banner Mining. The Eighty-Five mine operated between 1885 and 1931, and production totalled 1,494,287 tons averaging 0.11 oz of gold per ton, 1.23 oz of silver per ton, and 2.80% copper. The vein extended for a distance of about 3000 ft northeast and was mined to a depth of 1650 ft. The Atwood mine, adjoining the Eighty-Five mine, to date has been of lesser importance as a producer, but it has been operating for several years producing high silica flux ores for a smelter. Production totalled 352,828 tons up to January 1, 1962 From the Bonney-Manilla and Misers Chest mines, owned by Banner, production through 1961 totalled 2,006,343 tons with an average grade as mined of 0.0192 oz of gold per ton, 0.760 oz of silver per ton and 2.63% copper. Banner built a 150-tpd flotation mill in 1936 after almost a year of development on the 600 level of the Bonney mine. After less than one year's operation, it became apparent that the 150-tpd rate was not sufficient to make a reasonable profit due to the marginal grade ores. The low tenor of the ore, mainly chalco-pyrite in a highly siliceous gangue, made mandatory the close control of costs in order to make ends meet. A 300-tpd unit was added to the mill in 1937, and it is still the operating unit today. The clean sulfides presented no problems in milling. A metallurgist doing research on it at the time stated that the copper minerals seemed to have a built-in desire to float. Mill recovery of copper throughout the 27 years of operation has averaged 96.23%. A PERIOD OF FORCED GROWTH World War II brought many hardships to Banner. Labor and supply shortages caused drastic curtailment in development work. Rapidly rising costs far outdistanced any relief from pegged prices which we received from Government agencies. Finally, a branch of the Government asked us to stop all devel-

The effects of casting texture, grain orientation and grain size upon the performance of Alnico permanent magnets is described. Single-crystal specimens were produced by special sintering and grain coarsening techniques to study the effect of crystal orientation. In addition to texture and orientation effects, an analysis of the results indicates that the permanent magnet performance is impaired by a refinement of the grain size. AN excellent historical review of the development of Alnico permanent magnets has been prepared by Bozorth.1 The desirable permanent magnet characteristics of Fe-Ni-A1 alloys were discovered in 1932 by Mishima.2,3 The work of Ruder' showed that the alloys were age-hardenable, and Betteridge5 defined the best composition and heat treatment for the magnetically isotropic alloy known as "Alnico 3." Horsburgh and Tetley0 increased the energy product by the addition of cobalt and copper, "Alnico 2," and Oliver and Sheddon7 demonstrated that cooling in a magnetic field improved the residual induction of this alloy. Jonas8,9 then disclosed the great practical benefits of heat treating an alloy of higher cobalt content in a magnetic field and the resulting alloy, "Alnico 5," has become the standard of the industry. This paper describes the fundamental aspects of a procedure which can be used to further improve the properties of these anisotropic permanent magnet alloys. A study of the casting techniques used in the production of anisotropic Alnico permanent magnets indicated that the magnetic quality was affected by the as-cast macrostructure. Improved performance was observed in magnets containing a high percentage of columnar grains whose long axes were parallel to the magnetic axis of the casting. McCaig10 studied the effect of such columnar grain structures upon the magnetostriction characteristics of similar alloys, however no data was presented showing the effects on other magnetic properties. The following paragraphs describe two experiments which were conducted to determine the effect of various grain orientations upon the energy product. Special composite molds were prepared of highly conductive and highly refractive components to remove the heat of solidification from the casting in a controlled manner. Representative macrostructures produced by these techniques are shown in Fig. 1, along with the relative volumes of favorably oriented columnar grains. The alloy, Alnico 5, has the highest permanent magnet performance of any commercial magnet material. It has the nominal weight composition of 8 pct Al, 14 pct Ni, 24 pct Co, 3 pct Cu, and 51 pct Fe. A heat of this material was cast into molds producing the type A and B grain structures shown in Fig. 1 and pairs of the resulting magnets were placed in heat-treating boats so as to eliminate any biasing effects of boat position. After a standard heat treatment the type A magnets, with 16 pct of the volume composed of favorably aligned grains, had a maximum energy value of 3,940,000 gauss-oersteds, while the type B magnets with 73 pct aligned grains averaged 5,090,000. S. mines at Bingham, Utah, but in November, 1912, he entered the operating department of the Chino Copper Co.'s concentrator at Hurley, New Mexico, where he stayed until July, 1913. During the latter half of 1913, he was employed as chemist in the laboratory of the El Paso smelter, at El Paso, Texas. In December, 1913, he became engineer and geologist with the Empire Zinc Co., at Socorro, New Mexico, which position he held at the time of his admission to the Institute in 1914, and until he entered the army in June, 1918. Before beginning the study of mining, Mr. Ringlund had completed a course in pharmacy, which accounts for his enlisting in the Medical Corps. Lieutenant George Roper, Jr. George Roper, Jr., a Junior Member of the Institute, was killed in an aeroplane accident near Shotwich, England, on Play 25, 1918. He was born at Steubenville, Ohio, in 1893, and at the time of his admi~sion to the Institute in 1916 was a student in mining and metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, Mass., from which he received the degree of S. B. in June, 1917. In August, 1917, he enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps, and after preliminary training on this side of the water, was sent to England. He was making the final cross-country flight of his course of training when the accident occurred.

LARGEST of the known commercial deposits of pebble phosphate are those found in Polk County, Florida. The phosphate bed, commonly known as the matrix, will consistently average 6 to 9 ft. in depth, and is found under 3 to 60 ft. of over-burden. The phosphate pebbles, white and black in color, varying greatly in grade, are found imbedded in a matrix of sand and clay; and range in size from the fines to pebbles 1 1/2 in. in diameter, although the average coarse size is approximately 1/2 in. in diam¬eter. On some of the washers all material under 14 mesh is lost. High-grade phosphate (75 per cent plus of bone phosphate of lime, CasP2Oa) is generally soft, the pebbles breaking up during the mining operation and in pumping; low-grade phosphate, 67 to 69 B.P.L., is black in color with hard pebbles with no loss encountered in pumping.

WE are approaching the depletion of our principal source of iron ore-the Great Lakes deposits, which have provided 85% of the nation's requirements for the past fifty years. This situation presents a threat to our standard of living and our position as a world power. Fortunately, in the Great Lakes region there are still tremendous quantities of potential iron ore in the form of the low iron, high silica rock called taconite. The economical extraction of iron from taconite will insure our future steel supply if no new deposits available to the United States even in time of war are discovered. In the new process presented here, the iron is reduced directly by a simple method and then separated from the silica. The product is "feed," not to the blast furnace, but to the steel plant. This process requires very much less plant, less physical and chemical treatment, and less fuel and auxiliary materials than the conventional ore concentration-blast furnace method. In my opinion, this new, fundamentally different approach offers a better hope for the solution of the iron ore problem.

THE pumping of solids in water suspension is an important part of many metallurgical and mining operations. In most cases, it is still in the rule of thumb category for which no universal formula has been developed, and much research is needed. Because of the limited and incomplete data available, this article may be classed as an experience paper, which is presented with the hope that some contribution will be made toward the development of the so-called universal formula. This formula, if and when developed, may be evolved from several factors, many of which are not now available for general application. The designing engineer is interested in obtaining accurate forecasts on: 1-the minimum velocities needed to prevent choke-ups in the pipeline, which in turn dictates pipe sizes, 2-power required for pumping, 3-pump selection. The basic factors for a given problem will include: 1-weight per unit of time of solids to be handled, 2-specific gravity of solids, for calculation of volume, friction and power, 3-screen analysis of solids with the colloidal acting, i.e., the slime fraction, a very important factor, 4-shape of particle or some means of determining a friction constant, 5-effects of percentage of solids, 6-development of a viscosity factor to be used in the overall calculations, 7-calculation of the lower limits of pipeline velocities permissible, 8-calculation of total head, pump horsepower, and 9-setting up of pump specifications. In certain limited cases horsepower and total heads and minimum velocities may be computed and a suitable pump selected from basic data, but in many cases, as in mining of Florida pebble, phosphate, experience rather than a hydraulic formula still should be used as a basis of selection. For more than a decade the Pacific Northwest has been a frontier of successful porphyry copper-molybdenum exploration. This vast region (about 2100 miles long, 350-500 miles wide) occupies a geologically complex mobile tectonic belt. It parallels the Western Cordillera from northern California-Nevada to southern Alaska-Yukon Territory, and west from the northern Rocky Mountain-Tintina Trenches to the Pacific margin. Right lateral displacement has occurred along major transcurrent faults that are sub parallel to the region and the transform Fairweather-Queen Charlotte fault zone separates the North American continental plate from the Pacific oceanic plate. Porphyry-type deposits are widespread, but producing mines are restricted to south and central British Columbia. Size and grade are variable (25 to +300 mt; 0.18 to 0.65% Cu with 0.014 to 0.049% MoS2; 0.14 to 0.28% MoS,) and secondary enrichment is normally unimportant. Metallization is genetically and spatially related to late quartz-feldspar porphyries that are within, marginal, or satellitic to composite batholithic intrusions. Radiometric ages of the plutons range from Miocene to Triassic-Jurassic (18 to 217 m.y. [million year] ). Country rocks are typically eugeosynclinal metasedimentary and metavolcanic assemblages of Permian to Jurassic age. Several of the older (pre-Late Cretaceous) deposits formed in submarine island arc environments and they may be genetically related to occurrences of volcanogenic sulfides in the greenstone country rocks. Deposition of bornite-chalcopyrite-molybdenite ores is controlled by contacts, breccias, and fault-fracture zones. Associated hydrothermal gangue minerals include biotite, orthoclase, sericite, kaolinite, quartz, anhydrite, and tourmaline. Isotopic data suggest a deep source for ore, gangue, and plutonic host rocks. Significant exploration features include porphyries, dike swarms, breccias, potassic alteration, barren quartz cores, gossans, and fringing halos of pyrite and propylitic alteration.

THE so-called ?paraffin dirt" of the Gulf Coast oil fields has been con¬sidered an indication of the possible presence of oil and gas, and not a few wells have been brought in solely on the basis of such evidence. In a sense, it may be empirically justified as evidence of the presence of oil or gas, though it cannot be said to be infallible. If the writer is correctly informed, its association with oil and gas was pointed out by Lee Hager some years ago, and while it is commonly mentioned by geologists and operators in conversation, no discussion seems to have found its way into print. The present interpretation is based on laboratory study rather than on field investigation, and is put forth with the hope of stimulating discussion which shall lead to more complete understanding. The term "paraffin dirt" has been applied to soils with a peculiar texture, which has been described' as "curdy" or "rubbery." When moist, the material breaks much after the fashion of "green" cheese. It is rubbery under compression, but does not resemble rubber in tenacity or cohesion. When dry, the material ranges from hard clods to a horny mass of high tensile strength. The shrinkage in drying is very great, especially in the hornlike matter. The moist material ranges in color from dark brown in the specimens rich in organic matter to grayish in specimens containing more inorganic matter. All of the specimens studied were readily attacked by molds, which in some cases grew in great profusion on the samples. Samples exhibited a rather characteristic "swampy" or "mucky" odor when wet, and a characteristic odor of humic soils when moist.
