"Sustainable development is an influential ethical concept in modern mining management. However, the concept is not culturally neutral because it is based on Christian, Western values. These values can be very different from traditional values in emerging mining countries like Thailand, where Buddhist values are dominant. When applying the concept of sustainable development, these differences should be taken into account. Different values imply different interpretations of ‘good mining’. They have a significant impact on how mining operations are evaluated, perceived, operated and managed. This paper attempts to integrate Buddhist principles with approaches of the sustainable development concept. When local values are appreciated and maintained, mining companies and their external stakeholders can identify objectives and approaches that match with their own values and contexts. Practices based on this integrated ethic can help to promote sustainable mining and to minimize communication risks for enterprises in mining countries like Thailand. INTRODUCTION The objective of this paper is to integrate Buddhist principles to the application of sustainable development concept to mining activities. The structure of this paper is divided into four parts. An introduction provides basic information about Thailand, its mining industry and the role of Buddhism on the past development. The second part compares the differences between the sustainable mining framework and the implications of Buddhist principles on mining. In the third part, the core Buddhist teachings are integrated into the sustainable mining framework. This is followed by conclusions in the last part. THAILAND, BUDDHISM, AND MINING Thailand is a constitutional monarchy state in Southeastern Asia with a population size of around 65 million [1]. Its GDP in 2013 was 391 billion USD [2], predominantly deriving from manufacturing (38%), trade, transport and communication (24%), agriculture (8%) and mining and construction (4%). Still the largest part of the Thai workforce (39%) is working in the agricultural sector. The remaining part of the workforce is equally distributed across services, manufacturing, and mining and construction sectors. [3]"

Dewatering of a -0.5 mm fine coal has been studied extensively. Deep cleaning requires however fine grinding, and dewatering of such ultrafine products presents a great challenge. Several coal samples finely ground and characterized by different wettabilities have b.een used in the filtration tests. Vacuum and press filters have been employed. In this paper only the results obtained with different flocculants (totally hydrophobic. semi-hydrophobic and hydrophilic polymers) are included. The results reveal the effect of coal surface properties and flocculant type on filtration of ultrafine coal.

INTRODUCTION Traditionally mineral processing equipment has been procured based on (equipment) specifications prepared by the engineers. As newer materials of construction are being used for equipment manufacture and plant control systems become more sophisticated, the need for thorough and detailed specifications is greater than ever. For example, it is not uncommon to find plants looking at grinding circuits consisting of semiautogenous mills with variable speed, gearless, drives of large horsepower. Technical specifications for the mill, wrap- around motor and control system must, therefore, be carefully prepared to ensure that the respective equipment supplied by vendors meets overall grinding needs. Various engineering and design companies have expended considerable time and effort in developing the specification format. Equipment manufacturers have also given significant effort to developing data sheets aimed at collecting information regarding not only the duty of the equipment, but also the conditions under which it will be operated. As engineers moved from one company to another, the specification format became cross-fertilized and further developed. As a result, specifications on file with various engineers have improved considerably over a period of time. Equipment specifications from earlier projects are commonly used as a basis for tailoring new ones. To keep equipment specifications short, general technical considerations are often compiled as separate specifications. For example, general considerations applicable to the design, manufacture and supply of the mechanical equipment are consolidated under "Standard Requirements for Mechanical Equipment” and included along with that specified for purchase. As the economic feasibility of the project has been established during earlier studies, purchase-related activities can be initiated following completion of the specifications. Procurement itself is a major activity, however, in this chapter only those activities directly related to the purchase of equipment will be discussed. The author was privileged to find employment as a uranium mill chemist for The Anaconda Company while working his way through school in the mid-1950s. He then served Anaconda in various technical and management positions until 1980. This paper describes the prevalent technologies employed by uranium producers, briefly describes various mines and mills in the U. S., and memorializes a few of the thousands of men and women who contributed to the U. S. Uranium Boom. Following isolation of uranium as an element by M. H. Klaproth in 1789, uses of uranium were confined primarily to pigments, glass coloring agents, and ceramic glazes. In 1896, Antoine Becquerel found that uranium is radioactive, releasing particles and energy as it decays. In 1898, Pierre and Marie Curie isolated radium from uranium and learned that it can be an effective treatment for some types of cancer. In 1939, it was discovered that the isotope U235 is fissionable1 . Up to this point, nearly all uranium production was from pitchblende concentrates made in Bohemia, Canada, and the Belgian Congo. In 1938, only about 5 percent (23.85 short tons) of global output was produced from ores of the carnotite mineral that were being mined in the U.S. By the early-1950s, physicists in many countries had begun to recognize the potential for nuclear chain reactions. Ernest Rutherford (UK), Frederick Soddy (UK), and Leo Szilard (US) explained transmutation of elements and formulated the principle of “atom splitting”. In 1934, Marie Curie’s daughter, Irène, and her husband, Frédéric Joliot, identified uranium as the most viable source for this new form of energy. The basic fission process was unraveled by German scientists in December 1938. After Hitler’s army seized the uranium deposits in Czechoslovakia, many feared that Germany would build the first nuclear weapon.

A bewildering number of continuous thickeners and clarifiers are used in mineral industries and other heavy industries. General types are: 1. Conventional Thickeners (Fig. 1). 2. Thickeners with Flocculating Feedwells (Fig. 2). 3. Solids Contactors (Fig. 2). 4. Tray Thickeners (Fig. 3). 5. Lamellas (Fig. 4). 6. Conventional Thickeners with Lamellas 7. High Flow, Fluid Bed Thickeners (Fig. 5). These units must be adapted to varied applications. They must provide operating flexibility to meet process needs. Such factors multiply the decisions which must be made prior to the selection of a thickener. The seven types of thickeners listed above, with their variations, share design concepts which limit their application and which can be used to evaluate their performance. Some of these are listed: 1. Feed velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 2. Natural or reagent flocculation is necessary. 3. Horizontal settling area is the basis for capacity. 4. Overflow velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 5. A controlled underflow is necessary. Applying these needs to the basic process concepts is thickener selection. The basic function of a thickener in the minerals industry is the separation of a thickened sludge containing fine solids from water. The Thaumasia Joint-Venture, composed of Bouygues Travaux Publics, Soletanche- Bachy and Bessac, completed the construction of the underground section of line 2 of the Nice tramway, which comprised a 3.2 km twin track tunnel and four underground stations, in a particularly complex urban and geotechnical context. The density of the surface structures, as well as the presence of many historic buildings on its route made the construction of the tunnel even more sensitive, with a settlement threshold of Half an Inch. The joint venture faced a complex subsoil, varying from one extreme to another from highly plastic clay layers to fibrous peat and to cobbles with very high permeability, with artesian ground water, and with unforeseen anthropogenic obstacles in the tunnel section Due to the diversity of the problems encountered and their variability over short distances, the construction of the underground section of the Nice tramway, in its very sensitive urban context, undeniably constituted an unprecedented challenge.

The Crestmore Limestone Mine of Riverside Cement Company in Riverside, California is situated within 1.6 km of the Santa Ana River. It is an alluvium covered deposit with a massive quartz manzonite intrustion separating the upper and lower limestone beds which dip from 30° to 50°. The highly fractured upper bed contacting the Santa Ana alluvium contains many unique water inflow problems which vary, from multiple high pressure 19 liters per minute inflows up to 3,000 liters per minute to 11,000 liters per minute inflows-contacted by development mining in April 1983. A case history of the successful grouting of these inflows and the continual grouting procedures in advance of present mining with empirical' results are discussed.

Hydrocyclones and other dynamic separators are normally fed with pulps of water and solid particles. The particles have different sizes, shapes and densities and, except in the special case of mono-characteristic particles, are segregated into size, shape and density. Segregation is magnified by the high values of centrifugal acceleration in the hydrocyclones. This paper develops the theory of the segregation, indicates the major variables involved and reports experimental data of segregation under different operating conditions for mixtures of magnetite and/or ferrosilicon and non-magnetic minerals.

China's coal energy development, characteristics and relationships with atmospheric pollution are reported. Atmospheric pollution sources from coal combustion are analyzed. Some of the projects for clean coal combustion in the Shanghai area include use of industrial briquettes, investigation of coal combustion additives, and blending combustion of coal with industrial wastes. Coal is China's main energy source, and 80 percent of China's annual coal production is used in combustion devices. Coal-flue gases from the domestic stoves and industrial furnaces are the main atmospheric pollution source. China's atmospheric pollution is, in fact, the pollution of coal-flue gases. To 2000, in view of China's energy needs as a developing nation, the atmospheric pollution from coal combustion must receive our utmost attention.

Like the Arizona jeans commercial says: Arizona's not just a state, its a state of mines. Nearly 300 mines operate in Arizona making it the largest nonfuel mining state in the nation. Although copper is king in Arizona's mineral complex, nonmetallic minerals play important roles both regionally and nationally. Throughout Arizona's mineral resource development history industrial minerals have dominated over the metals for most, but not recent years. The State's metal mining industry which makes Arizona the number one mining state in the United States is a relatively young phenomenon. Arizona was an important industrial mineral producer long before her metal mining industry got started. Salt, phosphates, silicates, and oxides as food additives, tanning chemicals, gemstones, components of aboriginal ordnance, pigments, and construction materials are among the minerals produced long before copper, gold, silver, and the other metals became important. Around 92 % of Arizona's mineral industry is made up of nonfuel minerals, 86 % of that is accounted for by copper. Another 4 % is taken up by copper byproducts of molybdenum, silver, and gold. The remaining 10% of the production is occupied by non-fuel, non-metallic minerals. Arizona's 1994 industrial mineral production of nearly $380 million ranks us among the top 25 in the nation and higher than the total mineral production of at least 15 states.

The dissolution behavior of gold and copper from their elemental states and from Au/Cu alloys in cyanide solutions has been investigated using a rotating disc electrode. The anodic and cathodic reactions were studied separately and the resulting polarization curves were combined to examine the overall dissolution reactions. The dissolution rate of pure gold in the aerated cyanide solutions was inhibited by the anodic passivation on the gold surface, while the dissolution rate of pure copper was found to be mass-transfer-controlled. On the other hand, the dissolution of gold and copper from the alloys was partially controlled by electrochemical reaction and largely by mass transfer.

The title of this talk has brought some interesting responses - even before it was written - from different parts of the country. A geologist from the Western U. S, was deeply concerned with recent layoffs in his profession and the employment situation in general and wondered why "the AIME wasn't doing anything for the benefit of its members." A petroleum engineer in Texas said that a group in his field were studying "professionalism" and their professional status and wondered if there were any words of wisdom for him. A mining engineering professor from the East pointed out that the National Science Foundation did not include mining engineering as one of its recognized fields in one of its equipment funding programs. These are just a few examples of reactions received to date, but they serve to illustrate the broad image that the title has meant to various people. Actually the term profession is defined by Webster as "a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation." The word encroach means "to enter by gradual steps or by stealth into the possessions or rights of another", or "to advance beyond desirable or normal limits." The intention of this paper, as originally conceived and requested by the program chairman, was to combine those two words literally and talk about how the professional standing of mineral engineers is being eroded from people outside the profession. But the amazing preliminary response suggests that it may be timely to broaden the discussion by including some comments about professionalism in general. In the paper the terms "mineral engineer" or "mining engineering" are used frequently, but it should be clearly understood that much of what is said is valid and is intended for all fields covered by SME and perhaps for AIME in general.

Recycled materials are increasingly being used in road construction to supplement natural aggregate derived from crushed stone, sand, and gravel. An understanding of the amount of substitution that is taking place, its economics, and factors affecting the level of substitution is useful in estimating the potential for recycling and in assessing the total supply of aggregate. While U.S. consumption of recycled aggregates from crushed concrete is estimated to have increased 160 percent between 1994 and 1996; it comprised less than 5 percent of total aggregates consumed in 1995. Construction waste supply is regional, and is determined by infrastructure decay and replacement rates. Aggregate recycling rates are greater in urban areas where infrastructure is being replaced, natural aggregate resources are limited, disposal costs are high, or strict environmental regulations prevent disposal. Recycling is expected to increase as construction contractors attempt to save on transportation, disposal, and new material costs. Aggregate producers include recycled material as an option to consumers in order to prolong the life of their reserves and improve their range of products. Recycled aggregates can be a supplement for natural aggregates in selected applications, but their use should be evaluated locally based upon relative cost, quality, and market factors Because aggregate recycling is often affected by local and regional transportation systems, disposal and tipping fees, resource supply, the market for specific products, and municipal support, costs for three representative fixed site operations of different sizes were modeled. Under study conditions, all were found to be profitable, but highly dependent upon local tipping fees and market prices, which can differ significantly by location. Smaller operations were found to have different operational dynamics, often requiring creative marketing or incentives to maintain profitability.

The importance of underground stress instrumentation cannot be minimized. It was Lord Kelvin who said that unless you can assign a number to a quantity,, you know very little about it. Most engineers will agree although this kind of statement is resented by our friends in non-technical fields. Mining is undergoing a revolution from art to science. But how can mining methods be optimized if there is no way of measuring the effectiveness of a given mining method? Do we know how effective a' support is unless we can determine its reaction to the mine structure? How do we assess the need for modifications to existing systems and supports, and how do we measure the effectiveness of such changes? Cut and try techniques are too wasteful of time and energy, and rarely provide solutions to a given problem. The purpose of underground stress instrumentation is to provide answers to some of the above questions -- answers that cannot be obtained otherwise This does not mean that laboratory studies are not valuable -on the contrary. Laboratory and underground studies supplement one another. Rock mechanics had its conception with the study of stresses in homogeneous, isotropic, and elastic models subjected to various force systems. These analyses were valuable inasmuch as they pinpointed possible sources of trouble due to stress concentrations. If the results observed underground did not always agree with the experimental analysis, it was not an indictment of the latter. More probably, the discrepancy could be attributed to the lack of similitude between model and prototype. The more nearly one can simulate underground conditions in a model, the more apt one is to produce results which correlate well-with underground observations. It is impossible to completely simulate underground conditions because all of the significant design parameters have not been recognized and evaluated. What better way can one evaluate these parameters than by underground stress instrumentation?

This paper discusses factors affecting the productivity of continuous coal mining operations. It analyzes design and operational relationships in continuous mining systems, and investigates how their productivity can be improved by selecting the number of headings, the dimensions of pillars, and the depth of cuts as well as the miner loading rate and tramming speed, the shuttle car payload and hauling speed, and the roof bolting cycle time. A computer simulator has been found very efficient in analyzing effects of section layouts and equipment operating characteristics on the productivity of continuous coal mining systems.

Retreat mining, using yielding steel friction props, over a seven-year period has been successful at a uranium mine operated by Hecla Mining Company in southeast Utah. The support system allow good roof control, maximum profit, complete extraction, and good ventilation. Unusual subsidence observations were made in that some of the surface was raised rather than lowered, Longwall mining, commonly practiced in European coal mines, has a potential of broader application because of mechanization possibilities and better roof control and ventilation at greater depths.

INTRODUCTION This paper describes the use of a shield and compressed air for construction of a short section of a pair of twin single-track tunnels for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) transit system. Although only two blocks long, this section posed the greatest difficulties to both engineers and contractors, and is the most expensive section of line construction on the MARTA system. All this derives directly from its setting--these tunnels had to be constructed through mixed-face conditions. SETTING The Broad Street tunnels form a link between the Peachtree Center and Five Points Stations, in the heart of Atlanta's central business district (Figure 1). Peachtree Center sits atop a solid rock ridge, which inspired the design of a deep rock-mined station, as described in the 1979 RETC. Five Points Station is MARTA's hub--the intersection of the system's two main branches. It is located in the old railroad gulch, a filled-in erosional valley at the base of Peachtree Ridge, and was constructed by open-cut methods. The alignment and profile of the Broad Street tunnels were closely constrained by these two adjacent anchors, and in the six-block stretch between them there was very little room for maneuvering. Since the rock ridge petered out about in the middle of the section, it was evident at the outset that there would be about two blocks of rock tunneling at the north end, two blocks of soft ground construction at the south, and two blocks of mixed-face in between. It is this central two-block section that is the focus of this paper.

The so-called "construction aggregates," sand and gravel, crushed stone, and several kinds of metallurgical slags, are used principally in the construction and maintenance of all kinds of roads, engineering structures, buildings, homes, airports, etc. Production of these aggregates is approaching two billion tons annually. In terms of tonnage produced, sand and gravel has been the leading mineral since 1954, with crushed stone gradually approaching an equal tonnage. Sand and gravel is of widespread occurrence and of wide variation in suitable gradation and quality. It is a low-value, heavy-loading, short-haul commodity. These characteristics account for the historic concentration of production tonnage in and near urban areas where construction activities are concentrated. The combination of improved urban and near-urban highway systems and the steadily rising rail rates for short-haul traffic has fostered a consistent change since World War II from rail to truck transport, with trucks now accounting for more than 807 of the tonnage moving away from the production sites. While there are increasing numbers of exceptions, truck transport of sand and gravel is generally limited to about 30 miles. The expansion of the urban and near-urban areas of even moderate density, which became so pronounced after World War II, has been the source of most of the sand and gravel industry's environmental difficulties. Dust, noise and truck traffic associated with the operations -- particularly truck traffic -- have, of course, generated public complaint. This has been particularly true in those many cases where housing developments have approached and even surrounded sand and gravel operations which were in operation before the development started.

Although systematic control of ventilating air currents in underground mines dates back to the Greek and Roman empires, quantified analysis dealing with the cost of providing airflow did not appear until about 1860 when the first fans with acceptable efficiencies became available. Initially, these were introduced to avert methane explosions initiated by shaft bottom furnaces. However, discussions arose on how much coal the steam driven fans consumed in comparison with shaft furnaces in order to produce the sane amount of airflow. Ventilation economics had arrived. In 1981/82 a project was funded by the Department of Energy and carried out at the University of California, Berkeley in order to analyze and compare alternative ventilation designs from the viewpoint of economics and systems efficiency1. This paper highlights some of the results of that study.

Industrial Engineering in the industrial world is a relatively new field, having been conceived about the turn' of the century by Frederick W. Taylor, who was not satisfied with the hit-or-miss methods of evaluation and estimation. Through crude Industrial Engineering techniques never before used, he completely changed the bricklaying industry so that work accomplished was more than doubled. To help us better understand what we mean by Industrial Engineering, I think a very simple definition Is in order. Industrial Engineering is a scientific approach to problems in cost, production and operations: and is designed to provide a means of increasing producitivity and reducing costs through standards measurement and standardization of the best methods, practices and equipment, There are many complicated definitions, but pure and simply, it all boils down to providing the means for increasing productivity and reducing the cost. Industrial Engineering has been applied in manufacturing since Frederick W. Taylor?s time and in the last 20 years has grown in stature by leaps and bounds. It is a basic function of successful manufacturing companies and is an accepted fool firmly entrenched in manufacturing organizations. You may know of some successful manufacturing companies that do not employ Industrial Engineers as such, but someone in that organization is doing Industrial Engineering work. They have standards and controls whether they call it Industrial Engineering or not. The manufacturing industry has benefited from this tool; other wise, it would have been discontinued long ago.
