Adrian Fleming is Executive Vice President of Exploration for Golden Star Resources Ltd., Denver. Adrian is an Australian who graduated in 1973 with an honors degree in geology from Newcastle University, New South Wales. His extensive international experience has spanned exploration, project development, and operations for both large and small companies in Australasia, Southeast Asia, North and South America, and Africa. Adrian has been with the Golden Star group of companies for four years and he is responsible for all exploration activity. ABSTRACT Golden Star acquired the rights to the Omai prospect in 1985 at a time when the country of Guyana was out of favor with the exploration fraternity. Subsequently in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Golden Star acquired exploration properties in Suriname and French Guiana well ahead of its competitors. Golden Star's strategy entailed identifying windows of opportunity and aggressively pursuing them. We also recognized that the Guiana Shield hosted a significant area of highly prospective greenstones which were comparable in metallogenic potential to similar terrains in eastern Canada, western Australia and west Africa. The geological skills Golden Star developed and the exploration techniques employed to explore deeply weathered rocks are described. The paper highlights the key elements of Golden Star's strategy and illustrates how some of the milestones reached by the company led Golden Star to establish an enviable portfolio of gold and diamond properties in the Guiana Shield.

The Surface Mining Control & Reclamation Act is a complex piece of legislation signed into law on August 3, 1977. It is the culmination of more than six years of debate by the Congress over the need for a national regulation of surface mining as opposed to the prior concept of regulation by each concerned state. It departs from the more normal type of law in that it includes very specific requirements, limitations and performance standards. In its procedural aspects, it is somewhat similar to the Clean Air Act and the Water Pollution Control Act in that it places primary responsibility at the state level, provided the state meets minimum national requirements. At the time of writing this paper, in late December 1978, the Interim Regulatory Program has been in effect for seven months. The proposed regulations for the Permanent Program, the draft Environmental Impact Statement, and the draft Regulatory (Economic) Analysis ware available for eight weeks before the close of the comment period on November 27. We are now awaiting issuance of the final versions of these documents. The states in which coal is mined, for the most part, have made sere revision to their state laws and are in the process of revising their regulations, or have just completed the revision, to comply with the Initial Regulatory Procedures. They are now faced with another new major effort to analyze and plan for compliance with the Permanent Regulatory Program, which is expected to be promulgated by the Office of Surface Mining of the Department of Interior by the time this paper is presented.

Accurate toughness determinations are difficult to achieve in the case of soft or heterogeneous rocks. The existence of a large process zone ahead of the crack tip makes the determination of the apparent toughness crack length dependent, in the case of subsized specimens. In order to use practical size specimens, the authors propose a new toughness test, the Modified Ring Test, which pre- vents a largely developed process zone to form ahead of the crack tip. This test has also the advantage that its geometry is core-based. Numerical and experimental results are discussed.

The molybdenum industry has been in a depression since the beginning of the decade. Real molybdenum prices are significantly reduced from 1979-1980 levels when there was a perceived capacity shortage and continued expectations of burgeoning demand. Primary capacity brought on stream since then has been unable to operate profitably and indeed, in light of high inventories and reduced demand, has been largely unnecessary. Structural changes in the molybdenum industry will be needed in the future to weed out superfluous capacity and to expand demand through new product applications.

The main feature of caving methods is to draw ore from the overlying waste rock. Process development for Eskay Creek began in early 1990 at Lakefield Research, and was initially focused on producing a high-grade/high-recovery concentrate for sale. Owing to the significant base metal sulphide (Cu, Zn, Pb) content of the ore, such a product would have made an attractive feed to a copper smelter, while a gravity and/or flotation flowsheet would have circumvented many of the environmental permitting problems that were anticipated. In the event, it was found that neither gravity nor flotation (nor even a combination of the two) was able to produce a discardable tailing and, in late 1990, attention shifted to the development of a hydrometallurgical flowsheet.

The limitations in mechanism research of mineral comminution in the past and the basic features of the comminution process have been analyzed. Two kinds of catastrophe model, i.e., cusp model and swallowtail one in the mineral comminution have been put forward. The dissipative structure of the mineral comminution: entropy production rate, extra entropy, extra entropy production and system stability has been discussed. The physical nature of the behavior that an old structure was destroyed and a new one was produced in the mineral comminution process has been brought to light.

Construction of a 13m shaft through approximately 100m of water bearing soils and another 100m of bedrock was attempted using the Slurry Diaphragm Wall Method with a combination of deep dewatering wells. During excavation within the slurry wall, unexpected groundwater inflows occurred in a structure of loose silty sands. Artificial ground freezing was selected as a remedial method to seal the leaking slurry wall, and as a primary excavation support and groundwater control method for the 30m of overburden material below the base of the wall. Design of the ground freezing system required analysis of both the structural requirements of the unsupported soil, the frost effects against the existing slurry wall and the groundwater control in the area of the breech in the wall. These design procedures are summarized, and construction and excavation techniques and corresponding schedules compared in this paper. Advanced drilling techniques, ground freezing quality control and general contractor procedures for efficient shaft construction are discussed.

Analysis of AI, As, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, K,. Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sr, 11, V and Zn in various types of samples collected at Van Stone mine (a Pb-Zn deposit in Washington) and surrounding areas indicates that the concentrations of several elements in water, soil and sediment are higher than their background. values. Concentrations of metals in water decrease sharply downstream and are below the maximum contaminant levels specified for drinking water. Under present physico-chemical conditions, contamination of water is insignificant but the enrichment of heavy metals is found in soil and sediment.

Salinity in Effluents carries a high penalty as a result of toxic­ity, corrosion, limited re-use potential, scaling and environmental impact. Although the high TDS, such as Calcium sulfate, other than metals are still being dealt with a low key non issue basis, they are receiving more and more attention from regulators. Traditional solutions to solve these problems are costly and inefficient and create therefore severe constraints on the prof­itability of mining operations and out-price in general the finan­cial resources for environmental clean up operations. Going up the technology versus cost curve the most econom­ic solution to pollution is dilution but which is difficult in a coun­t1y shoti of water. If this can't be done, the second best, at least in sunny areas, is, to pump the whole effluent on a tailings dam for evaporation. Depending on the contaminants, one may have to pond the efflu­ent to avoid re-dissolution and seepage into the ground. The next most common solution to pollution is the addition of lime to remove and concentrate any dissolved metals and then dump the product, hidden in a mass of gypsum in a convenient place. Again ponding may be required to avoid ground pollution. However the treatment costs start to rise steeply if it is not allowed to discharge the limed overflow solution because of its high calcium sulphate content. Further treatment is then required in the form of high cost and high tech membrane process tech­nology such as reverse osmosis or dialysis or even mechanical driven evaporation.

Gallium (Ga) and Germanium (Ge) are essential strategic elements that are extensively used as semiconductors in many technological fields. Owing to their essential uses and supply disruption, Ga and Ge are deemed critical by the U.S. They are typically found as substitutions or inclusions in zinc minerals. However, their distributions within zinc minerals are not well understood. To address this, trace element and mineralogy analyses of representative samples obtained from an old high-zinc-grade tailing were performed using various qualitative and quantitative techniques. These techniques included Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Tescan Integrated Mineralogical Analysis (TIMA) with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Moreover, bench-scale froth flotation tests were conducted to enrich zinc minerals, the major hosts of Ga and Ge, using PAX as a collector, Na2S as a sulfidizer, Pb(NO3)2 as an activator, and MIBC as a frother. Comprehensive characterization analyses of the flotation products showed significant enrichment of Zn, Ga and Ge in the flotation concentrates.

There has been a surge of exploration activity and interest in mineral properties located in cold Northern climates, with gold and copper properties as the two most attractive targets. There are already a number of mining operations located in the Arctic, for example, Red Dog, Polaris, and Lupin, all located in the Canadian Arctic. The logistics of sustaining operations, the engineering design and construction methods for such inhospitable regions are now relatively well understood. However, at least three of the proposed new mines in the Yukon Territory, Canada are designed to be heap leach operations. Rescan Engineering has recently completed Feasibility studies for two heap leach operations in the Yukon, one of which, the Brewery Creek Mine, is now in operation. The purpose of this paper is to explore some of the engineering and operating concepts that have been developed to make heap leaching an appropriate process method for gold recovery in a cold climate. Many of the readers will be familiar with the general and specific details of heap leaching, and it is not the intention of the authors to deal with any of the established "do's" and "don'ts" that have been addressed in numerous previous papers, but only with those pertaining to cold weather operations. This paper also examines these design concepts in specific relation to the results of the first winter's operation at Brewery Creek Mine, the first "far" North heap leach operation.

For many years the explosives industry was a technological enigma: it was at the 'cutting edge' of some technologies and in the backwaters of others. For example, for at least the past 85 years, the industry routinely measured time to one-millionth of a second for determining the detonation rate of explosives. At the same time, however, formulations were usually hand-written in 'formula books,' such as the alchemists may have done. Also, due to the fact that the equipment had proven to be safe, many of the mixers and packing machines in use until recently were those patented in the 19th century; improving efficiency was not worth the possible risks that might be encountered. In recent years, the wide availability and portability of computers and their adaptation to specialized applications have revolutionized the explosives industry, much as it has many others. With the advent of the water-based emulsions and slurries (water gels), and the necessity to design totally new processing and delivery equipment, the opportunity arose to apply modern techniques to many aspects of the business. Table 1 lists some computer applications currently in use by explosives manufacturers and end users. The use of high-tech production controls, equipment design aids, field measurement devices and other computer applications is so pervasive in the industry today that any brief article such as this must be considered only as a broadbrush overview of the subject.

INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently being constructed for the United States Department of Energy in SE New Mexico. The purpose of the project is to store low level transuranic waste in an underground environment which will ensure a safe atmosphere for the life of the stored waste. Ohbayashi was contracted by the DOE to sink two shafts and underground drift development which will be used to conduct a series of long term experiments in order to finalize the suitability of the geology and the environment for the transuranic waste storage. The two shafts sunk at the WIPP site were excavated around a borehole by conventional methods. The excavation around a borehole eliminates some of the established blind bottom sinking techniques, but creates unusual problems which must be pre-planned and scrutinized closely. An analysis of the slashing to the borehole technique will be given. WASTE SHAFT The waste shaft (w/s) is 5.8 meters (19 feet) in diameter and will be used primarily to transport the radioactive waste to the underground storage area. A pre-existing 1.83 meter (6 feet) diam borehole was taken to a depth of 655 meters (2150 feet) to the existing drift; at this level, a 38 meter (125 feet) sump was installed using blind bottom sinking techniques. Introduction The best way to eliminate the possibility of rapid excavation in tunnel work is to start an argument between Owner Engineer and Contractor. And arguments are readily started when work is progressed without a frank open agreement on the rules of the game. Fifty years ago a tunnel contractor took a job to excavate and line a tunnel, providing all labor and materials under the guidance and continuous instruction of the Engineer who provided all survey work, checked each new heading and set the lines for the next round of drill holes, usually designed and ordered protective measures, kept record of progress and controlled payment for the work. In my first job in a tunnel, muck cars were loaded by hand and hauled by donkeys. Progress was, at today's criteria, not rapid. The Contractor or in the case of a large concern, his executive field representative was always at the site, knew most of his men by name, and there was a mutual feeling of respect between him and the Engineer in charge of the work. Misunderstandings were cleared up when they came up, expeditiously and fairly, even though satisfaction was not always expressed. The Owner came for the ground breaking and usually for the holing through shot. The Owner had full reliance on the Engineer's ability and integrity. The Engineer recognized the Contractor's expertise in being able to man the job and produce results.

This paper will discuss the Final Tunnel Linings which were placed in 6700m of a 2.32m inside diameter precast concrete lined interceptor sewer tunnel in Staten Island, New York. Two methods were employed to install the final tunnel linings. One method involved forming and placing a polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete cunnette invert, followed by an arch pour. The second method involved the jacking of reinforced concrete pipe into the tunnel, followed by a low density cellular concrete backfill grout. These two methods will be described and compared.

Over the past decade, numerous factors have led US copper firms to face increasingly severe competition from low cost foreign producers. As a result, greater attention is being devoted to developing and implementing new technology that can reduce costs and maintain the competitive position of domestic firms while simultaneously meeting environmental requirements. To obtain a better understanding of the likelihood of the development, adoption, and use of innovative copper technologies in the future, the Bureau of Mines contracted with Mineral Systems Inc. of Stamford, CT, to undertake a systematic survey of technological experts in industry, government, and the academic community. According to the survey, major developments in exploration over the next 25 years are likely to be in technologies that facilitate analysis and interpretation of deposit data rather than those that enable the collection of additional data. Most new copper mining and beneficiation technologies are likely to represent evolutionary extensions of existing systems with a notable increase expected in the application of information systems technologies and computer control methods. A possible movement towards increased usage of continuous mining systems in copper was also noted. Experts indicated that several copper smelters are under consideration for extensive renovation and, as a result, flash smelting technology is expected to become much more widely used in the US. A gradual movement toward continuous smelting methods was also forecast. In copper refining, the major technological change expected is the gradual automation of various refinery operations. Finally, though increased usage is expected, in situ solution mining and hydrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores are not expected to become widespread over the forecast time horizon. This first article in a two-part series describes the survey method chosen and the technological innovations selected for eval¬uation. Also discussed are the assessment panels, background scenarios, critical events, and diffusion forecasts. Next month, part two will address technology forecasts resulting from the study. Featured are discussions on future copper exploration, mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, and recycling. A cost/benefit analysis will also be included. Methodology Selection of Assessment Method To develop a consensus forecast of technological change in the copper industry, a technique for systematically polling subjective opinions of experts was required. After conducting a literature survey and some preliminary testing, the direct probability assessment method was selected. With this assessment method experts are asked to express in quantitative terms their judgment of the probability that a specified event will occur, usually over a series of time frames. The method was chosen because the experts were observed to be more comfortable with this approach during the testing period, and the results of this process effectively satisfied the assessment objective. The experts generally could provide more precise estimates of the timing of future events using this technique because it was the least cumbersome of the assessment methods tested. Identification, Selection, and Description of the Technologies The initial list (Table 1) of innovative copper technologies assessed in the study was developed from two principal sources: knowledge and expertise of the study team and a review of relevant technical literature. From this list of 47 potential technologies, 10 were selected for detailed assessment. Table 2 lists 35 technologies that were subsequently identified in the first series of assessments. Twelve technologies from this list were also selected for detailed evaluation in a second assessment round. Gold and silver cyanide complexes are presently desorbed from activated carbon by means of hot caustic elutions. These solutions may or may not contain additional sodium cyanide. There are several parameters which affect the rate of stripping. Some of these include pH, ionic strength, and tempera­ture. Stripping is conducted in recirculating (ZADRA) or once through (AARL) circuits. This paper describes the development of a new chemical eluant which increases the rate of stripping of both gold and silver cyanide complexes from carbon. Two case history applications are described.

The paper "Weld Notch Affects on Pulley and Belt Conveyor Reliability" has done an excellent job of describing theoretical fatigue and fracture mechanics methods used in modern weld design. From this foundation, we intend to further detail areas previously discussed and present new research in the application of these principles to pulley weldment life prediction. Affects of changes in alternating stress range, mean stress, and residual stress have been investigated using controlled laboratory fatigue tests on a pulley weldment. Comparisons between these results, weld codes, and theoretical fatigue predictions will be made and discussed.

The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 from New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be relatively widespread through much of the Tasman Fold Belts of Eastern Australia and production to date is estimated to be some 500 000 carats from a number of 'small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond contents has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia over the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives, of which 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe however, the 1200 Ma high grade Argyle lamproite and associated near-by alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable with current annual production of 40 million carats valued at approximately US$400 million. Production from the open-pit will be sustainable until at least 2003. This paper briefly summarizes the history of diamond discovery in Australia, principal diamondiferous provinces and deposits, current exploration activities and the potential for future discoveries.
