In collaboration with Kennametal Inc. and corry rubber corporation, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a drill bit isolator to address noise overexposures associated with roof bolting machines in underground coal mines. NIOSH laboratory studies confirmed that the drill bit isolator reduces noise during drilling. Field studies were needed to confirm that a noise reduction could be obtained under working conditions and that the device was sufficiently durable. This paper reports results of field tests of the device conducted at five underground coal mines. Noise reduction was assessed by comparing the operator?s noise exposure during drilling with and without the drill bit isolator. Durability was assessed by recording the number of holes and total feet drilled with each bit isolator until either the test period ended or the device failed. The results from these tests showed that the device is an effective noise control in a mine environment. The field-tested drill bit isolators provided a noise reduction of 3-5 db(A). Of nine devices tested for durability, five exceeded 610 m (2,000 ft) drilled and two exceeded 762 m (2,500 ft) drilled before failure. Durability issues found in the field tests led to final production optimizations that have resulted in a commercially available product for drilling with 35-mm- (1.3-in.-) diameter roof bits and hexagonal drill steels.

Australia is the world's largest coal exporter, and technological advancement is a key element of the coal industry strategy. The issues include: increased recovery of saleable coal; enhanced quality, i.e. lower ash, moisture, fines, phosphorus (sulphur is a relatively minor problem for Australian coals); better quality control; higher throughputs/lower costs; improved handling and transport; and reduced environmental impacts. In process terms, many coal preparation operations, particularly fine coal circuits, are relatively inefficient, and all circuits must also be matched and integrated for optimum overall operation. A holistic approach to technological improvement is desirable. This paper summarises research and development efforts, within CSIRO and its collaborators, across the unit operations as outlined in the title.

A commercial high pressure roller press (KHD 90125) was installed at the Coleraine Minerals Research Laboratory for testing in October, 1994. Pilot plant evaluation of the high pressure roller press has shown that it can be used as an alternative to the rod mill for the comminution of taconite. A series of pilot plant tests were run to compare roller press products to rod mill products in a simulated taconite flowsheet using magnet separation and closed circuit ball milling. Further investigation of a hybrid grinding system, roller press crushing followed by ball mill grinding, indicate that the combination may represent the most energy efficient system for taconite processing.

The authors present laboratory and plant results illustrating the benefits to be gained by using chemical additives, namely flocculants and surfactant dewatering aids, in the Bayer process. Advantages of synthetic flocculants over starch are illustrated in terms of more efficient solid/liquid separation in both the initial settling of blow-down slurries and in the CCD wash train. In addition, it is shown that the use of synthetic flocculants considerably reduce the levels of organic contaminants present in the process liquor. Secondly, very significant improvements in moisture removal were obtained by the application of dewatering aids to hydrate filtration/ washing operations.

INTRODUCTION Coal workers' pneumoconiosis and sili- cosis are only two of several diseases which are rlassed as pneumoconiosis. These are respiratory diseases caused by dusts which are inhaled and accumulated in the lungs. The individual particles of dust cannot be seen by the human eye. They are so small that they escape the natural cleansing mechanism of the nose and air passages and make their way down to the terminal air sacs of the lung where they injure the cells and cause the formation of scar tissue. Consequently, if there is exposure to high concentrations of dust over a period of time - usually, a number of years - the amount of scar tissue increases and begins to impair breathing. As a result, the miner develops shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing ad-if exposure continues - this progresses to permanent disability and frequently to death. Death is often due to pulmonary heart disease, the effect of stress on the heart 2s it tries to compensate for the weakened lungs. Specifically, silicosis is an occupational lung disease caused by the accumulation of free silica (quartz) in the lungs. Silicosis is considered the most important form of pneumoconiosis, not only because of its seriousness as a respiratory crippler, but also because of the large number of workers who risk contracting it in a variety of occupations. Quartz is one of the most common substances of the earth's crust, estimated at about 60 percent. Silicosis has been found in coal, metal and granite miners, as well as in other workers, such as sandblasters and pottery makers. Silicosis is also known to predispose the lung to tuberculosis and to increase the chances that a worker will contract chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The seriousness of silicosis was tragically brought to public attention about 50 years ago. During 1932-34, workers were involved in digging a tunnel through rock at Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. While their exposure time was relatively short, they developed silicosis because of the high concentrations of quartz. By 1936, 476 workers had died of silicosis and about 1500 were believed to have the disease (Washington Post, 1982). It is difficult to tell how many coal miners have silicosis. The Butte quartz monzonite is the host rock for early porphyry copper style mineralization and subsequent mesothermal-epithermal, enargite-gold style veining that transects the district. The east-west Anaconda system veins: including the Emma, Anaconda-Original, Syndicate, Badger-State, and Alice-Rainbow veins, each with strike lengths of over 12,000 feet and vertical continuity in excess of 4,500 feet, along with mining widths from 5 to 50 feet, are unique to Butte. The incredible dimensions and tenor of these veins have yet to be surpassed and Butte is still touted as being the “Richest Hill on Earth.” The Anaconda Company was formed in 1895 to develop underground copper reserves in the district and eventually consolidated all operations under one company. Production from underground mining continued through the mid-1970’s. Open pit mining in the Berkeley pit began in 1955 with the extraction of supergene ores, along with the remnants of deeper horsetail zones inaccessible to the underground mines. Operations in the Berkeley pit were suspended in mid-1982 because of the rejection of high arsenic, copper concentrates at major smelting facilities throughout the world. Bulk mining of porphyry style mineralization in the Continental pit began in January 1980 to supplement copper production while stripping “C” pushback in the Berkeley pit. The Anaconda Smelter closed in September 1980. A molybdenum circuit was added to the Butte Concentrator in 1981 and mining continued in the Continental pit to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. A blend of Berkeley and Continental ores were processed to dilute penalty metals in the final concentrates marketed to toll smelters. All mining operations ceased mid-1983 when Anaconda closed the Continental pit and offered the property for sale. Montana Resources reopened the Continental pit in June 1986 to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. Operations were suspended mid-2000, because of exorbitantly high power prices, but resumed in November 2003 with rising metal prices. Bulk open pit mining of the early porphyry style mineralization has sustained production over the past twenty years and mining is expected to continue in the Continental pit with favorable prices. Future mining will eventually develop a 500 million-ton geologic resource incorporated in a supergene enrichment blanket situated between the Berkeley pit and the Continental pit. Grades in this enrichment blanket range in the neighborhood of 0.5% copper.

Most of the siliceous rocks of the Arkansas Novaculite are novaculite, but they also include some chert, siliceous shale and, rarely, sandstone. Novaculite is defined as a homogeneous mostly white or light-colored rock, translucent on thin edges, with a dull to waxy Juster, and comprised almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. The most plausible theory of origin for novaculite is that primary silica from submarine volcanism was picked up by organisms and deposited as amorphous silica, which was subsequently converted to microcrystalline quartz (novaculite) through diagenesis. The Arkansas Novaculite crops out over an east-west distance of 200 miles in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Three divisions of the formation have been defined: a Lower Division, almost entirely massive light-colored novaculite; a Middle Division of interbedded dark chert and shale; and an Upper Division of massive calcareous novaculite. The Lower Division and most of the Middle Division are Devonian in age, and the remainder of the Middle Division and all of the Upper Division are Mississippian. The massive novaculites of the Upper and Lower Division attain their maximum development along the southern and central outcrop belts of the formation in Arkansas, and it is these rocks that are the source of current silica production. The calcareous novaculite of the Upper Division weathers readily to a light-colored, porous, less brittle rock, and in places to tripoli deposits. Currently tripoli is mined from a single deposit near. Hot Springs, Arkansas, and the rock is processed for highly specialized filler and abrasive applications. In the vicinity of Hot Springs, Arkansas, certain novaculite layers from the Lower Division with unique textural characteristics are quarried and processed into whetstones. Several small quarries produce this rock for two local and one out-of-state whetstone-fabricating plants. Chemical analyses of composite samples of novaculite from both the Upper and Lower Divisions taken at widely separated localities average 99 percent SiOz indicating a substantial resource of high-silica rock.

Environmental considerations related to the disposal of coal combustion byproducts (CCBs) and the impacts of deforestation associated with the harvesting of timber for utilization as roof supports in mines should become more severe in the future, as landfill space and suitable timber reserves become more scarce. To help address these concerns, lightweight artificial supports, such as post and crib elements, that use large percentages of coal combustion byproducts as aggregate have been developed for use in underground mines. These structural products show equal or better engineering characteristics than timber, and they have the potential to replace timber support in underground mines. CCB-based ultralight structural material (ULSM) has also been developed and commercialized for use in the construction of ventilation stoppings in underground mines. The bulk densities of these blocks range from 0.40 to 0.64 g/cm3 (25 to 40 lb per cu ft) with more than 75% CCBs. Efforts are also given to develop and demonstrate large volume CCB-based subgrade improvement technique for road construction. Soil treated with SIUC fluidized-bed combustion (FBC) fly ash developed an immediate bearing value exceeding 25% with a swelling strain of less than I %, which is greater than untreated soils, and met Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) standard specifications. In this paper, development procedures, engineering characteristics and beneficial uses of CCB-based structural products are given.

The revolution in development of new technology and practices in the gold mining and metallurgy industry continues unabated despite the ups and downs in the gold price. Some of the new cutting edge technologies are listed in Table 1 overleaf. There is room to discuss just a few of these here, but many more are identified and described in RANDOL (1992). Cutting edge advancements in gold recuperation, can be sorted into three categories. The first category includes fundamental advances that offer major improvement with significant economic benefits. Second would include evolutionary developments that offer smaller, but nonetheless commercially valuable improvements. Finally there are those "advances" that are interesting but of trivial or question­able economic benefit to industry. It is essential to adopt a "systems approach" philosophy towards developing and applying new technology. Practical innovation often comes about as a result of having to solve a problem. Innovation for innovation sake is an ego trip. Environmental management has become an important part of the system and the environmental implications of new processes and practices in the mine and mill have to be carefully considered for potential benefits and/or liabilities.

This study examined the potential of mixing rotary kiln fines (RK fines), a waste product generated when limestone is converted to lime (CaO), with acid producing mine waste to provide 1) short-term mitigation by neutralizing acid produced by iron sulfide oxidation and 2) long-term mitigation by facilitating the passivation of iron sulfide mineral surfaces. Five loadings of RK fines were mixed with 75 g of Duluth Complex rock to produce neutralization potential (NP) added: acid potential (AP) quotients of 0,0.11,0.22,0.66 and 1.1. The mixtures were subjected to wet-dry cycling laboratory testing for 585 weeks. The rock alone produced acidic drainage, with pH decreasing below 4 after about 20 weeks of reaction and ultimately reaching the approximate range of 3.3 to 3.5; sulfate release did not decrease over time. The RK fines elevated pH and inhibited sulfate release for time periods which increased with the mass of RK fines present. The pH of drainage from the 0.11 quotient (NP added1AP) loading decreased below 6.0 after 75 weeks of dissolution and decreased to 3.6 after 117 weeks, at which time the reactor was terminated. The duplicate 0.22 quotient loadings of RK fines decreased below 6.0 after 95 and 170 weeks. The former was terminated after 117 weeks, and the latter reached a minimum pH of 2.8 after 512 weeks. Drainage pH from the 0.66 quotient decreased below 6 after 581 weeks. For the drainages which acidified, the cumulative calcium release prior to pH decreasing below 6.0 was 92 to 103 percent of that initially present as calcium carbonateloxide in the RK fines. The pH of drainage from the 1.1 quotient typically remained above 8.0 throughout the period of record. Sulfate concentrations in the drainages decreased while the neutralizing fraction of the RK fines was present, but increased after this fraction was depleted.

Introduction Ring roller mills are efficient size reduction machines embodying the following machine functions: 1) Size Reduction: from a feed size of 2 in. to various size products as fine as 400 mesh, or granulation from 2 in. to 6 mesh containing a minimum of fines. 2) Drying: fluid bed drying of wet feed materials. 3) Conveying: negative pressure air system results in dust-free conveying. 4) Beneficiation: liberation and removal of foreign materials from the auxiliary bottom discharge simultaneously while grinding. Operation Operation of the roller mill system, Figs. 78 and 79, is completely automatic. A feeder introduces raw material into the grinding chamber in the base of the roller mill at a rate determined by pressure variations within the roller mill as material is ground and air conveyed away. The feeder will be activated by the reduced static pressure and introduce unground material into the system, thereby maintaining a constant differential pressure. Plows located ahead of each grinding roll direct the material upward and between the grinding rolls and the bull ring where it is ground to size. The grinding rolls are free to swing out centrifugally, which forces them to bear upon and grind the raw material. Being free to pivot axially, the rolls automatically assume the proper position for grinding and need no adjustment to compensate for wear. Rotation of the rolls is by rolling contact. Once ground to size, material is swept out of the mill by the controlled air flow from the centrifugal main mill fan. Air suspended, the ground material passing through the adjustable spinner separator. In the separator, an accurate size classification is made which allows product-size material to be conveyed away from the roller mill while oversize material is returned internally for additional grinding. By varying the speed of the separator drive, more or less cyclonic action is achieved at this location, effectively controlling product size. Product sized material is removed from the airstream by the cyclone collector. Typically, a conveyor or product storage bin will be located to accept the product as it exits from the bottom of the cyclone collector.

The Bradshaw Section 5A Interceptor involves the construction of two miles of 108-inch, finished diameter tunnel in dry soils. Excavation is generally by Lovat TBM with ribs and lagging support. The tunnel is beneath a recreational parkway and stringent measures have been enacted to preserve the parkway and minimize disruption to the neighborhood. Apart from these constraints, the project would have been unremarkable but for the intervention of CalOSHA and the local fire department who ordered extraordinary fire protection measures. The paper discusses the cause and effect of these measures and comments on the potential repercussions for other projects.

The design of an auxiliary ventilation system for long underground openings (drifts, ramps and shafts), often requires the installation of multiple fans. The fans are installed in series and separated from each other by rigid ducts of fixed or variable length. However, problems relating to excessive leakage often occur, with each project representing a unique problem requiring an efficient solution. In this study, a method to determine the design parameters of an auxiliary ventilation system is presented. The method is based on the principle of partitioning a long ductwork into segments of finite length and solving the resulting networks separately. Specifically, the method is developed to solve two types of problems: constant fan spacing, and constant fan size. In the former, the fan spacing is fixed, and the problem is solved for fan sizes. In the latter, the problem is to solve for fan spacing. An example is used to illustrate the method.

Underground coal mining can cause seismic events. There is currently no way to predict such phenomena reliably, in particular stronger events. That is why, according to the current state of the art, empirical methods are employed in this field. Some assessment criteria, which relate to the geological and mining situation and either stimulate or rather help to avoid seismic events, are presented in this paper. These criteria are examined for a practical mining situation in Germany, with a view to estimate possible seismic events.

The primary criteria used by the mining industry to judge the merit of a project is internal rate of return (IRR) rather than net present value (NPV), although NPV is favored by academicians. This paper discusses the problems of IRR and NPV and compares the multigoal nature of the decision¬makers and their need for informa¬tion having the characteristics of NPV and IRR. The conclusions reached are that both NPV and IRR can be used for investment ranking, that NPV suffers the same multiple root problem as does IRR, and the use of conventional incremental IRR to reach NPV¬consistent project ranking is mis¬leading.

A physical model for the diffusion and flow of gases through porous solids, which accounts for the random nature of individual gas molecules moving through a solid of definite structure, has been formulated. The model was solved using' the Monte-Carlo technique. It was then used to evaluate specific constants related to the dusty gas model and to describe the gas-porous solid diffusion phenomena. Experimental results were used to validate the stochastic model.

Consumer preference for ever-higher laptop performance coupled with laptops’ declining lifespans make them a significant contributor to electronic waste. An in-depth evaluation of elemental composition and distribution is important for determining metal recovery potential and sustainable recovery processes. In this work, the characterization of individual components of laptops is studied for the systematic identification of important elements and for streamlined and structured recycling, to reduce processing steps and improve economics. A process flowsheet highlighting various recycling routes by targeting metals and various components is also proposed.

An analysis of the interaction between a creeping rock and a yieldable lining is presented. The following cases are considered: an elastic lining, a lining made of circular shaft rings that may slide at their joints, a lining made of circular reinforced concrete panels with wooden compressible strips inserted between the longitudinal joints and a yieldable support that has a compressible broken-rock stratum between the support and plane rock. By formulating a mathematical model for the rock-lining interaction, one can optimize the sequence of excavation-lining application. To keep costs to a minimum, one can also choose the most appropriate lining for the corresponding rheological properties of the rock.

The purpose of this paper is to present validation studies of the mine-fire simulator using data gathered from an actual mine fire which occurred in November 1991 at the Pattiki Mine. This study evaluates the suitability of the computer software package for modeling underground fires. The paper also discusses the importance of the on-line monitoring system for the validation process.

The incorporation of particles into metal matrix materials is important to many technologically important areas. Particles that are incorporated into a metal matrix have a significant effect upon the properties of the resulting composite. Proper selection of particles and incorporation densities can lead to optimal composite properties that can be modified as needed for various applications. This paper discusses the parameters that affect the particle incorporation density in electrodeposited metal matrix composite coatings as well as a deterministic model that can be used to predict the effects of such parameters on particle incorporation density.
