Coal is America's most abundant energy resource. Therefore, it IS logical to assume that coal must be produced in much greater quantifies in order to make the United States self-sufficient, as far as energy is concerned by 1985. However, there are a number of obstacles which have to be overcome in order to achieve such a great task. According to one of the most outspoken American Mining men, there are three major obstacles. Those are: (1 ) Mining technology (2) Public image of the coal mining industry (3) Governmental policy toward the mining industry The following will be dealing with Shortwall Mining, which is a very specific part of mining technology and which might influence the image of the coal mining industry as well as the governmental guidelines, at least to make it easier to live with those guidelines. During recent years the operation of coal mines has been more expensive than ever. Since 1970, the cost of producing coal increased by 30% and the productivity dropped by just about the same amount. Those are alarming signs.

Modern business practice dictates that in order to ensure the economic optimization of investment, the size of any investment venture must be such that every increment of capital invested in such a venture yields at least a corporate minimum acceptable rate of return. This practice is based on the premise that alternative investment opportunities capable of yielding the minimum corporate return are immediately available. If a mining corporation is to make the maximum use of its investment funds, any capital investment in a mining property must comply with the above practice. The most important parameter in estimating ore reserves is the cut-off grade which is used to separate material into ore or waste. The cut-off grade is calculated on the basis that material of cut-off grade produces sufficient revenue to cover the estimated costs of mining and processing through to sales, including depreciation and produce a pre-determined profit. Ore reserves so estimated are adequate for determining the magnitude of an orebody but do not provide a sound basis for determining plant size and therefore capital investment in a new property or for expansion consideration on an existing property. From a financial analysis of this one ore reserve it is impossible to ascertain whether each increment of capital investment is providing the minimum acceptable rate of return, Other difficulties associated with the calculation of a cut-off grade including the determination of depreciation and the amount of pre-determined profit to be included in the cut-off grade calculation are outlined in the text. The proposed solution to determine optimum ore reserves and plant size for new properties avoids the complication of calculating a cut-off grade by computing a series of ore inventories using arbitrarily selected cut-off grades. A comparison of the cash flows generated by production from such ore inventories using incremental financial analysis clearly indicates the ore reserve and plant size which will best serve the corporation's investment and metal production goals. Incremental financial analysis of a corporation's operating mines and prospects assists management in assessing the comparative expansion and investment possibilities of each property for increasing or maintaining metal production on a long term basis.

Neutron activation analysis for mineral identification has attracted the attention of numerous investigators, judging from the publications on this subject in the past few years. 1-9 The appealing aspect of this method of mineral analysis is its proven sensitivity in the laboratory. In principle, activation analysis is one of the few petro-physical methods whereby a direct analysis for a mineral itself is possible in a borehole. The successful application of activation analysis requires the use of particular neutron reactions, measurement of selected gamma-ray energy intervals, and optimum bombardment and detection times. For copper analysis, Labanov et al., 10,11 using a low-energy PuBe source, reported an acceptable logging means. On the other hand, Pradzynski12, in analyzing ores and process tailings, used high-energy neutrons and photons for surface measurements of process samples. The work of Labanov et al. was based on measuring the rate of decay of the activated copper and hence was not as definitive as might be desired. Equipment is commercially available to carry out activation studies in the field 13,14 Gamma-ray spectra can be successfully transmitted over ordinary logging cables and, with borehole high-energy neutron accelerators and lower-energy chemical neutron sources, a variety of neutron activation methods can be studied. The purpose of the study discussed in this paper was to determine the feasibility and practicability of logging for copper using neutron activation techniques and commercially available equipment. The laboratory study showed that Cu could be detected in rock samples in the laboratory by high-energy neutron activation of 63 Cu. In the field, however, due in part to the large volume irradiated, the direct detection of copper using high-energy neutrons was not as promising. Detection of copper by measuring both the direct gamma-ray emission and the excessively strong low-energy gamma-ray absorption appears promising. Copper was not detected either in the laboratory or

This paper describes the geology of the Kalamazoo copper orebody discovered in the course of an exploration project carried out by Quintana Minerals Corporation under the author's direction in an area immediately southwest of the San Manuel mine, Pinal County, Arizona. In the period 1943-1947, exploration projects were carried out in the San Manuel area by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Magma Copper Company which resulted in the development of the San Manuel underground block-cave mine which is now in production at a rate of 41, 000 tons per day. Mining claims covering the area immediately west of the San Manuel orebody were staked in 1946 by Frank F. Salas, R. A. Buzan, H. G. Buzan, and W. C. Buzan of Mammoth, Arizona. These claims were optioned to Martha Purcell in 1946, and in the period of 1947-1958 seven churn drill holes ranging in depth from 1,400 to 2,950 feet were drilled by Mrs. Purcell. These holes did not intersect ore and no further deep exploration was attempted prior to the Quintana Minerals project which began in August, 1965, and which is described in this report. The Kalamazoo deposit is in Sections 3, 4, 9, and 10, T 9 S, R 16 E, Pinal County, Arizona, and it is reached by driving seven miles east from Oracle, Arizona (Figure 1) . The 2011 report titled ?Energy Critical Elements: Securing Materials for Emerging Technologies? by the American Physical Society?s Panel on Public Affairs and the Materials Research Society surveys potential constraints on the availability of these elements and identifies five specific areas of potential action by the United States to ensure their availability: 1) federal agency coordination; 2) information collection, analysis and dissemination; 3) research, development and workforce enhancement; 4) efficient use of materials and 5) market interventions. Energy-critical elements (ECEs) are a class of chemical elements that currently are critical to one or more new energy-related technologies. A shortage of these elements would significantly inhibit large-scale deployment, which could otherwise be capable of transforming the way in which energy is produced, transmitted, stored or conserved. The report addresses elements that have not been widely extracted, traded or used in the past, and therefore are not the focus of well-established and relatively stable markets (such as carbon in coal or uranium as fuels, copper, aluminum, nickel and iron, all of which are clearly vital in energy applications).

Many Latin American countries are facing a scarcity of water. As such, infrastructure decisions are quite different from those made in parts of the world that experience a positive water balance. In the latter case, the water treatment approach tends to be ?treat and discharge.? For Latin American regions facing the challenges that go with a negative water balance, the focus is on resource optimization and reuse. Historically, the water challenge has had a significant impact on economic development in Latin America, especially in sectors such as mining, where water usage is high. At the same time, countries such as Chile and Brazil are major development targets for mining and oil and gas operations. Given the water supply challenge, industry is increasingly turning to technologies and processes that maximize water recovery and reuse. With sulfide precipitation and ion exchange water treatment processes for example, it is possible to treat and recover more than 99 percent of water for reuse onsite. These technologies have been applied successfully in other regions of the world where water conservation practices are essential to economic survival.

Following an in-depth scenario and strategic-planning exercise in 1997, Noranda's mine production goal was set at 500 kt/a (550,000 stpy) of both copper and zinc metal in five years. There had been no recent discoveries, reserves were shrinking and things had to be done differently and quickly. Change is now continual in Noranda's program. The following steps were taken: the exploration and business development groups were combined, teams were formed to search for and respond to opportunity; geologists were coached to become more business minded and engineers were coached to become more optimistic; the company went global; clear thresholds were set, marginal properties were farmed out and other properties were fast tracked; reconnaissance exploration was focussed where there was a clear competitive advantage; and Noranda became a "flexible" partner to juniors and seniors. Is it working? A number of successes, near successes and outright failures are discussed. The main result is a much higher rate of opportunity flux, which is essential for success in the mining industry.

Red mud has been reported as a potential resource for lithium. To investigate the leaching behavior of lithium, a lithium-rich red mud was neutralized with hydrochloric or oxalic acid and then leached with acetic acid. When red mud was neutralized using dilute hydrochloric acid, about 58 to 60 percent of lithium was leached with 25 percent acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min, while more than 95 percent of sodium and 85 percent of calcium were dissolved in the leachate solution. When oxalic acid was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lower lithium leaching efficiencies of about 42 to 47 percent were observed. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the same conditions. In this study, 25 percent (v/v) of acetic acid at 85 °C for 60 min was demonstrated to be the optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid-neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results are useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is researching the application of solvent extraction technology to highly acidic (pH < 1) copper leach liquors. As increasingly complex copper ores are mined for leaching, use of highly acidic leach solutions maybe necessary to effectively recover the contained metal values. A mixture of two commercially available extractants, based on aldoximes and substituted 8-hydroxyquinoline, which has a high transfer efficiency has been identified. A synthetic leach liquor, containing 5 g/L Cu at pH 0.9 was processed utilizing the mixed extractant and a laboratory SX circuit. The loaded organic was stripped with a synthetic barren electrolyte compatible with electrowinning technology.

Tg Soda Ash operates an underground trona mine located In southwestern Wyoming, which utilizes continuous mining machinery to produce 2.OM tpy (2.2M stpy) by shortwall and room and pillar methods. As the mine developed, the Increasing distance from the shafts caused travel times to be a significant factor in planning for mine emergencies. It was decided to construct a barricade chamber, a modified refuge chamber, to Increase safety and to provide an additional escape option in the case of a mine emergency. Fortunately, there has been no need to use these facilities during the last 9 years, but mine emergency planning has been greatly improved.

Barrick closed the Bullfrog Operation in November 1999.During its life, the Bullfrog produced ore from three open pit mines and an underground mine; 32,000,000 tons of ore were processed at the 9,000-ton per day oxide mill. The mill tailings were deposited in a 320-acre tailings impoundment. When operations ceased, an estimated 750,000,000 gallons of water remained to be removed from the tailings impoundment. During operation, the drain down water from the tailings impoundment was pumped back to the mill for reuse; since closure of the mill, the drain down water has been managed by a combination of passive and forced evaporation.

The City of Toronto’s Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. This paper describes progress on the project to date and reviews the risk mitigation measures utilized on the project to move the project forward through tough geological conditions during shaft excavation and tunneling phase of the project.

Nickel demand is increasing along with the rising need for stainless steel and other alloy steel/iron. The small addition of nickel in such materials can improve impact strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. Nickel is generally obtained from nickel sulfide ores (nickel associated with sulfur) and nickel laterite ores (nickel associated with iron and magnesium silicate). Almost 60 percent of nickel is now produced from sulfide ores, despite its existence in sulfide ores being less than in laterite ores. However, the depletion of sulfide ore reserves makes the mastery of nickel laterite ore processing of important and immediate concern. Selective reduction followed by magnetic separation has been in development in lateritic nickel ore processing to overcome the issues of high energy consumption and pollution associated with conventional pyrometallurgy methods such as blast furnace and rotary kiln electric arc furnace (RKEF).

Following three major mining accidents in 2006, the MINER Act of 2006 was enacted by the U.S.Congress. The U.S. Mining Safety and Health Administration subsequently released the Final Rule on Refuge Alternatives for Underground Coal Mines, which required every underground coal mine to install refuge alternatives to help prevent future fatalities of trapped miners in the event of a disaster. The following paper documents the research that was performed on a structural wall to be used in conjunction with a breathable air system to create a refuge alternative. A 103.4-kPa (15-psi) safe haven polycarbonate wall for use in underground coal mines was designed and modeled using finite element modeling in ANSYS Explicit Dynamics. The successful safe haven wall design was modeled for an actual underground coal mine environment using the explicit finite difference formulation program FLAC3D to determine the responses of the wall and surrounding strata within a mine. A full-scale design was fabricated and installed in an underground coal mine to determine any construction constraints and as a final step in proof of concept for the safe haven wall design. This paper is meant to introduce the reader to a new wall concept to be used in conjunction with current technology.

The intersections of numerous joint sets at the surface of tunneling region of Abu-Tartour-Project in Egypt create blocks with irregular shape and size in the rock mass. Most of these blocks are not able to move into the free space of the tunnel. Few key blocks are in a position to move and as soon as they begin so, some restrained blocks will be liberated. The aim of this work is to find the (removable) key blocks for walls, floor, roof and corners of a portion of the tunnel under jointed surface rocks; and then determine the best tunnel direction.

"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. About 0.6–0.7 billion metric tons of coal come from longwall top-coal caving panels every year. The maximum annual production is 15 million metric tons per panel _The mining method employed in such panel is a combination of top-coal caving mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique, which is suitable for seam height between 12–20 m, as shown in Figure 1. The major role of financial institutions in the free world in the development of mineral resources is to provide the necessary capital in the form of loans to underwrite the development of these resources by the industry on a stable and continuous basis. This capital provided by the depositors to the bank must be invested in sound projects where the degree of risk is relatively small, the return on the investment is reasonable and the time to retire the loan is of short duration. Money is, therefore, one of the important ingredients along with technology, manpower and an exploitable resource that will provide a sound economic base in this region of development. Canadian banks are similar to banks of other western nations, although each country has some differences in their banking systems. The basic difference between the American and Canadian systems is that the former employs unit banking while the Canadian utilizes the more mobile branch system, which is prohibited or restricted in the United States and some other countries. Canadian banks are the subject of this paper, so, subsequent material will relate to Canadian banks unless indicated otherwise. It will be realized by everyone that the mineral industry is only one area of the economy in which the banks are interested and to cover the subject matter in the time allowed, the topic is restricted to mineral resource development. In Canada this is a vital sector of our economy and before we outline some of the details of financing and services involved in various aspects of mineral development, a review of the Canadian mineral industry is a necessary part of the sequence of presentation. The writer presents this material as a resource engineer advising a major bank in mineral matters, so the presentation may relate more to the financial problems of the developer

The production processes that are developed in the mining and minerals industry are manufactured to be exposed to very aggressive environments. Chemical, abrasion, and impact expose structures and equipment, steel or concrete, to a significant deterioration. This causes damage and adds high costs to operations that can be reflected in the destruction of equipment and structures in the arrest of the production process, which becomes very costly. Also, there is the potential for personnel accidents, which would require large sums of compensation for an employee, thus directly harming the image of the mining operation and company. Manufacturers of paints and coatings that have major centers for research and development (R&D Labs) distributed globally have developed high-tech products for durable protection from the elements for structures and equipment used in the mining industry. The difference between these paintings and coatings and what is normally known as conventional paints (e.g., those called domestic or decorative), is its chemical composition, structured around polymeric components that have highly resistant, chemical and physical properties to cope with extreme conditions to which they are exposed. With this, and only this, longer life of components can be achieved for equipment and structures used in the production processes of the mining industry. Today, in addition to the important features mentioned, some manufacturers of the paints and coatings dedicated to this highly modernized process have invested large sums of money in developing new products that add operational elements to the painting process. These coatings provide added value and significant performance to companies mining operations and that we can describe in three fundamental concepts:

The first step in the quarrying of granite, following removal of any overburden material, involves the freeing of large blocks from the formation. For many years the use of explosives was the accepted method of obtaining these blocks. Even today there are operations where this is considered to be the most economical method even though it does result in a high percentage of damaged stone. In more recent times the preferred procedure at most quarries has been to produce a continuous vertical cut or slot completely around the block to be separated. Originally, this was done by drilling a series of closely spaced holes around the block and breaking the web between the holes with a chisel-like tool known as a broaching bar. The machine used in this mechanical method of producing the relief slot is known as the channel bar. The modern day approach to the production of continuous channels was introduced to the industry around 1955 by the Linde Division of Union Carbide Corporation. The method employs a small rocket - jet burner producing a high temperature, high velocity exhaust flame which when directed against the granite causes it to disintegrate. This method, which has come to be known as "Jet Channeling", is now used by practically every major granite producer in the United States and Canada.
