This paper investigates the design approaches taken and the philosophy employed during the construction of the Metropolitan Airport Commission (MAC) storm tunnels, part of the Phase 4 Segment of the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project at Minneapolis St.-Paul International Airport, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. URS Corporation was retained to provide a design and Construction Management (CM)services for the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project. A case history of the design and construction challenges of the project is presented. The MAC storm tunnels consisted of the construction of twin 10-foot inside diameter (I.D.) tunnels within 7 feet of an existing 72-inch I.D. storm pipe at the base of a 70-foot high highway embankment. The analysis required during the design stage of the project is discussed. This analysis and our design approach provided a defensible framework and justification to make design decisions on relevant issues including: allowable spacing of new and existing structures; preferred order of construction; expected ground deformation behavior; response of lining types to adjacent construction; and effects of proposed changes to design at the submittal stage and during construction.

Lithium-ion battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12V, 24V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicated that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

The effect of Federal restrictions on Federal mineral estate in Alaska and the Western States is being addressed by systematic, State-by- State studies. The Bureau of Mines has inventoried and classified 3.5 million sq km (876 million acres) of land, section-by-section, according to 1) mineral ownership, 2) availability for mineral exploration and development as affected by Federal restrictions, and 31, areas containing mines and mineral resources. The availability of Federal land for exploration and development is spatially compared to areas containing mines and mineral resources. The methodology and overall results of the studies are presented.

This study examined rock failure in brittle rocks hosting the deep gold-bearing ore bodies on scales between millimeters and kilometres. This research study is part of the International Continental scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) project, “Drilling into Seismogenic Zones of M2.0-M5.5 earthquakes in deep South African gold mines” (DSeis). The broader ICDP-DSeis project aims include the examination of the extent of damage, the stress state around the fringes of the earthquake, and the potential existence of living organisms associated with deep-level earthquakes. Nevertheless, this study focused on two seismogenic zones – the Cooke 4 mine and Moab Khotsong mine. At Cooke 4 mine, the study examined the evolution of mining-induced fractures (M1-4) occurring ahead of the stope face during the extraction of the remnant shaft pillar. These fractures were monitored and delineated by a dense array of acoustic emission sensors that allowed hypocentres to be located with decimeter accuracy. Using this acoustic emission data, the DSeis team drilled and recovered the fractures, rock breccia and gouge using a sophisticated triple-tube drilling rig.

The most abundant fuel resource in the U.S.A. is also the most under-utilized. Proven reserves of bituminous coal, sub-bituminous and lignite constitute from 60% to 90% of our total fossil fuel reserves -- dependent upon the parameters used by the analyst making the estimate. Despite this ample supply, bituminous coal provided only 20% of U. S. energy consumption in 1967 and 1968, this dropping to 17.57 in 1971 and 1972. By 1978, according to my projections, 16.7% of the Nation's mechanical energy will come from bituminous coal. However, our energy needs are growing at such a rate that the 20.6% provided by bituminous in 1967 equalled 480 million tons while the 16.7% of U. S. consumption visualized for 1978 will require nearly 650 million tons. In order to view coal's position with perspective in this developing energy crunch, it is necessary to examine the total energy situation. To this end, I have prepared a couple of tables which you should have before you. I chose this procedure rather than slides because I would need to utilize an entire wall to make the data visible to an audience. Therefore, I refer you to the long sheet entitled "U. S. Energy Consumption - Trillion Btu - 1967-1978." As you can see from the heading, I am confining my treatment of the problem to the intermediate term. In the long run, if we are willing to pay the cost, we can do a lot of things, including the complete conversion of coal into a sulfur-free fuel.

Under normal conditions, a significant amount of pyrite is recovered in the froth during flotation of high-sulfur coal. In order to reduce this pyrite recovery, it is first necessary to determine the primary recovery mechanism, as different measures are required for reducing entrainment, locked-particle flotation, or true hydrophobic flotation. In this paper, evidence is presented which suggests that hydrophobic flotation is not the major mechanism for recovery of liberated pyrite, and that the bulk of the recovered pyrite is there either as a result of simple entrainment or by being physically locked with floatable coal particles.

Introduction Occurrences of platinum group minerals (PGM) in mafic and ultramafic rocks in association with Cu-Ni mineralization are well known. Yet for the Duluth Complex, a large body of dominantly mafic igneous rocks in northeastern Minnesota with significant Cu-Ni mineralization (Bonnichsen, 1972; Boucher, 1975; Watowich, 1978; Weiblen and Morey, 1980), little has been published concerning its platinum group element (PGE) contents and mineralogy. In a previous study of massive sulfide rock, sperrylite (PtAs2) was found in nickel arsenide and recovery of arsenide minerals by flotation has been investigated (Iwasaki et al., 1986; Ryan and Weiblen, 1984). Recently, an announcement was made of the discovery of significant quantities of platinum and palladium [peak assay values of 9 g/t (0.27 oz per st)] in an interval of a drill core with disseminated sulfide mineralization 16 km (10 miles) southeast of Ely, MN (Anon, 1985; Sabelin, 1985). This paper describes PGM from the Pt-Pd-enriched zone and evaluates their potential for concentration. Geologic setting The Pt-Pd zone occurs in the South Kawishiwi in¬trusion near its basal contact at 734 to 737 m (2408 to 2418 ft) depth. The South Kawishiwi is one of several minor mafic intrusions that constitute the western margin of the Duluth Complex near Ely, MN (Fig. 1). It is com¬prised of a 70.1- to 350.5-m (230- to 1150-ft) thick sul¬fide-bearing basal unit of troctolite with minor amounts of anorthosite, norite, picrite, and oxide layers overlain by a troctolite unit with interlayered anorthosite (Bonnichsen et al., 1980; Foose, 1984; and Foose and Weiblen, 1986). The basal unit, in which the Pt-Pd zone is found, is markedly heterogeneous in rock type, lacking any coherent internal stratigraphy, and shows evidence of both pre- and post-consolidation faulting (Foose and Weiblen, 1986). Geochemistry Chemical analyses were made on 0.3-m (1-ft) intervals of crushed drill core material (1/4 core, BX size) at 731.5 to 740.7 m (2400 to 2430 ft) depth and the results are presented in Fig. 2. The analytical techniques used were atomic absorption spectrometry for silver, chromium, copper, and nickel; a coulometric titration method for sulfur; and a combined fire assay-DC plasma technique for gold, palladium, and platinum. Figure 2 shows the significant enrichment of platinum and palladium at 734 to 737 m (2408 to 2418 ft) depth; it corresponds to a stratigraphic interval rich in oxide minerals. Average values for platinum and palladium contents over the 3-m (10-ft) interval are 2520 and 2580 ppb, respectively, or 5.1 g/t (0.15 oz per st) platinum plus palladium. Platinum plus palladium contents from individual 0.3-m (1-ft) intervals are as high as 9120 ppb or 9.1 g/t (0.27 oz per st) and average 7.4 g/t (0.22 oz per st) in a 1.5-m (5-ft) interval in the richest part of the zone. The Pt-to-Pd ratio is nearly 1:1 over the entire 9.1-m (30-ft) interval and the platinum and palladium correlate closely with chromium, which ranges from 1.9% to 5.3%. Copper, nickel, and sulfur contents for the drill core interval are also given in Fig. 2. In¬terestingly, the Pt-Pd high corresponds to a depletion in copper, nickel, and sulfur. When studying the feasibility of using autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding, operating and engineering companies frequently request assistance from the mill manufacturers in three areas - 1. Recommendations for studying the suitability of autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding for the specific ore. 2. Mill sizing, to accomplish required grind. 3. Recommendations on mill design and operation. Rod mills and ball mills are selected by the use of bench scale standard grindability tests and established calculation procedures, of which the most frequently used are the Bond Grindability tests and the Bond Work Index equation(1). The accuracy of these have been reviewed by C. A. Rowland in his papers, showing the correlation of work indices calculated from plant operating data and laboratory grindability tests(2)(3). The selection of autogenous and semi-autogenous primary mills has not reached the stage where mill size selection can be made from bench scale tests. Considerably more extensive testing will be necessary than required for selecting rod mills and ball mills.

Extensive deposits of kyanite occur in the southeastern United States, The reserves of these deposits, if developed, are adequate to supply the United States with 35-mesh kyanite concentrate:; for many years at the present-rate of consumption, According to Espenshade and Potter,1 the kyanite-quartz rock type deposits in this area contain about 100 million tons of ore averaging 10 to 30 percent kyanite. The tonnage of kyanite-bearing gneiss and schist is, much larger than the tonnage of kyanite-quartz rock, but the kyanite gneiss and schist are appreciably lower in grade. The largest deposits of kyanite-quartz rock are in the Farmville district, Virginia, and Kings Mountain district, North Carolina South Carolina, and at Graves Mountain, Georgia. Of the known deposits, only four were being mined for kyanite in 1967. These deposits are near Farmville and Dillwyn, Va., Clover S. C., and Washington, Ga. Production of kyanite and synthetic mullite increased substantially in 1965.2 Output of, domestic kyanite concentrate increased by 14 percent in 1965, establishing a record high for the fifth consecutive year. Estimated annual consumption of kyanite minerals and synthetic mullite was in excess of 100,000 tons. The manufacture of mulatto refractories accounts for most of the kyanite minerals consumed annually, but non-refractory uses are expanding.3 Most mullite refractories are used as furnace linings in metallurgical and glass manufacturing furnaces. The remainder is used largely for kilns, kiln furniture, and saggers by the ceramic industry. Small quantities of kyanite without calcination are used as a source of alumina in the manufacture of glass, electrical and chemical, porcelain, pyrometer tubes, and in the form of kyanite concentrate to increase the alumina content of fireclays. Kyanite is used to improve workability, increase strength, and to compensate for firing shrinkage in floor and wall tile and other ceramic products.

It is generally agreed that standing support should be installed in roadways that will for various reasons, be holed through with a longwall. Considering the magnitude of the associated abutment loading in conjunction with the need to ensure that the material used is cuttable, some form of cementitious support is often used.

A conventional paddle-type mixer and a gravity flow mixing device were evaluated for conditioning of phosphate ore with fatty acid and fuel oil, and for acid scrubbing prior to cationic flotation. Gravity flow mixing required less residence-time, but slightly higher reagent concentrations to achieve recovery levels similar to conventional conditioning. Grade was less sensitive to reagent concentration using the gravity flow mixer. For acid scrubbing, the gravity flow mixer proved equally effective. In this paper, the effect of time, pulp density, reagent concentration, and emulsification on conditioning and acid scrubbing efficiency of the two devices will be discussed.

Significant quantities of waste rock at abandoned uranium mine (AUM) sites in the western United States require removal from steep slopes exceeding 45 degrees in remote locations. This prevents the use of traditional excavation equipment and poses significant challenges for safe, effective material removal. A pilot study was conducted using a spider excavator to demonstrate the feasibility of removing waste rock and transporting it to areas where conventional equipment could be employed. The spider excavator was evaluated for its effectiveness in excavation, material movement and control, container usage, dust mitigation, and ensuring human health and environmental safety. The study established constructability and engineering parameters for implementing spider excavators in these challenging environments. Key outcomes include the preservation of existing vegetation, improved waste movement control, and enhanced safety measures for workers, nearby residents, and the environment.

Corrosion and product contamination have been difficult problems for extractive metallurgy industries in the U.S. because of the highly active chemicals used. During the past twelve years, other industries, particularly the chemical and paper segments, began to combat this problem with some degree of success using newer materials of construction, including reinforced plastics. These materials are made by combining a corrosion resistant thermosetting resin with a glass fiber reinforcing material and are used to con¬struct hoods, stacks, blowers, tanks, towers, pipe, and equipment of the most complex configurations. For service in contact with aggressive chemicals, the equipment is most often fabricated with the bisphenol-A fumarate polyester resins because of their resistance to corrosive attack. Data from both laboratory work and case histories of field applications are presented-for many common chemicals found in extractive processes. Information is also presented concerning design standards and recommended construction procedures

The Geomechanics Classification (Bieniawski, 1979) was modified for entry and roof support design in underground room-and-pillar coal mines. Adjustment multipliers were introduced to incorporate the influence of strata weatherability, high horizontal stresses, and the roof support reinforcement factor into the existing classification system. Sixty-two case histories of both standing and fallen mine roof were collected from two mines in the northern Appalachian coalfield. Twenty-seven engineering and geologic parameters were recorded for each case. A partial correlation analysis was carried out on the cases to establish which parameters have a significant impact upon the supported stand-up time of coal mine roof. Survival analysis, a statistical technique used in medical research to assess the effect of a drug or treatment on a patient's life expectancy, was conducted together with stepwise multiple regression to derive values for the adjustment multipliers. A practical example is included to illustrate the application of the modified Geomechanics Classification to underground coal mine design.

The purpose of this work is to determine the influence of sample length or size on the value of variance (Semi-variogram) to select the suitable length that is required to the geostatistical computations of ore evaluation. Three cases in Ghorabi Iron Ore were studied. The first one was on the iron fraction (Fe\) at which the semi-variogram gave an evidence to good continuity of the fraction in the ore. In this case, the length of sample has not important influence. The second case was for the Mn\ component of the same area where the semi-variogram has a nugget effect. The selected length for this case was 4 meters. The Cl fraction of the ore was the third case where the anisotropic phenomena was appeared and the suitable length is 3 meters.

The industrial practice of concentration of solids and production of clear solution by gravity sedimentation is an old technology. Through the years, many devices have been designed and built to aid this process. One of the more significant developments was a revolving rake mechanism to convey settled material to a central discharge point of a circular tank, patented in 1907(1). In recent years, clarification systems employing parallel inclined plates have appeared on the market; the original device utilizing this principle was patented in 1886(2). Numerous other methods have been invented, tested, discarded and sometimes re-invented, all with the specific intention of improving the capacity of a particular settling area. Sedimentation theory, as expressed in Stokes' Law, shows that the rate of settling of a particle is directly proportional to the difference in density between the particle and the surrounding liquid and, more significantly, proportional to the square of the particle diameter. Anything that can increase the latter will greatly assist sedimentation and, as a result, flocculation always has been an integral part of sedimentation. Most materials suspended in aqueous media are naturally flocculent to some degree and, hence, are readily concentrated by sedimentation, although sometimes very slowly.

Particle shape characterization is a complex task made more difficult because of the human eye's sophisticated recognition of shapes, giving rise to the assumption that shape analysis is considered a simple problem. Further exacerbating the problem is the question of whether particles have a general shape. Old and new shape measuring techniques are discussed, particularly the new image analysis methods techniques such as Fourier, Haar, Walsh and Delta. Problems with the current image analysis equipment and future research equipment needs are presented.

Production began in the Deep 1 zone of Goldex mine in 2017 at a depth of 1,200 m. Stope dimensions are 50 m high by 22 m wide (along strike) and the panel thickness varies between 22 to 35 m. The Deep 1 orebody is 350 m high by 400 m along strike and 200 m from hanging wall to footwall. The mining method is longhole with paste backfill with a three dimensional primary/secondary sequence advancing upwards in a typical chevron approach and retreating from hanging wall to footwall in a V-shape from a central panel. Mining at a depth of 1,200 m in massive granodiorite brings challenges related to seismicity.
