This paper describes the facilities at Pointe Noire, Quebec that Wabush Mines utilizes for the receipt, distribution, stockpiling and shipping of iron ore concentrate and pellets. The main topics to be covered will be: 1. - General description 2. - Concentrate receiving facilities 3. - Conveying circuits 4. - Stockpiling 5. - Vessel loading GENERAL DESCRIPTION The map of the eastern Quebec - western Labrador area as shown in Appendix #1 shows the location of Wabush Mines properties. You will note the Scully Mine located at Wabush Lake, Labrador, 235 miles north of the town of Sept-Iles, Quebec. Our neighbors, the Iron Ore Company of Canada have their properties further north at Shefferville, near by at Carol Lake and at Sept-Iles. To the Southwest, our other neighbors, Quebec Cartier Mining, have their iron ore processing facilities and their terminus on the St-Lawrence at Port Cartier. Concentrates are prepared at the scully Mine by mining, crushing, grinding, concentrating, drying and high tension separation for shipment by rail to Pointe Noire, Quebec. Pointe Noire is situated across the bay from the town of Sept-Iles, Quebec on the North Shore of the St-Lawrence River. The concentrate consists of 66% iron, 2 ¼ percent silica and practically no moisture, permitting the use of specially constructed railroad cars and handling facilities to convert the concentrate into pellets, the final product.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) has recently developed a series of models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study gas distribution around a continuous mining machine (CM) with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations in an exhaust curtain working face. CFD models utilizing species transport model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The study illustrates the gas distribution in the slab (second) cut. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face on the off-curtain side of the continuous miner; 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face, but divided equally to both sides of the machine; and 15% of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, with 85% directed into the return. These models were compared to a model with a conventional scrubber discharge where air is directed away from the face into the return. The models were validated based on experimental data and accurately predicted sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. One additional prediction model was simulated to consider a different scrubber discharge angle for the 100% redirected, equally divided case. This paper describes the validation of the models based on experimental data and the gas distribution results of the CFD models. INTRODUCTION To control methane gas and dust concentrations on continuous mining operations, it is important to provide sufficient quantity of fresh air from the end of tubing or curtain to the active face. In this region, operating machine-mounted water sprays and fan-powered, flooded bed scrubbers can significantly increase the amount of airflow reaching the face [1-3]. However, when an entry is large, especially in higher coal seams, the water spray configuration and the scrubber capacity may not be adequate to maintain sufficient forward airflow to confine the dust cloud to the face. Dust can roll back toward the machine operator as a result [4]. Currently, several coal mines having negligible gas emissions in higher coal seams (2.4 to 3.0 m [8 to 10ft.] thick) with exhaust tubing systems redirect the scrubber discharge back towards the face in an effort to improve dust collection. NIOSH studied the redirected scrubber exhaust techniques for dust and gas control in a full scale CM gallery to assess its potential for industry-wide application [5]. For a CM face, previous studies have concluded that the behavior of gas and respirable dust is a complex process. The distribution/dispersion and transport of gas and respirable dust after they are liberated at the face are governed mainly by their mass properties, the movement pattern of the ventilation air, and interactions with the mining machine and water droplets created by the external water spray systems used for dust control [6-10]. To understand these behaviors in a complex CM environment and to evaluate the effectiveness of various control techniques, numerical modeling has become a necessary supplement to laboratory experiments and field studies."

"Nearly every input to a mine plan is based on an estimate. The estimates may be from sample data, historical information, models, or personal opinion, but in all cases, these values are simply expected values (means). In real life, we do not get to iterate the exact conditions at our mining operation many times to ensure that that average value is attained. The expected value also tells us nothing about the spread of values that that input might take on. The result is a significant amount of unquantified uncertainty in our mine plans. Unfortunately, it is often too expensive or time consuming to update planning processes and software. This paper presents a proof of concept spreadsheet scheduling tool that can be utilized to incorporate many geologic realizations (simulated models) into the mine scheduling process. While this POC is not intended to be a detailed model of uncertainty, it is to show that there are stepping stones available for mine planners to begin to embrace uncertainty and produce more achievable plans without requiring a significant change in their planning process. INTRODUCTION Mining companies have included quantifying uncertainty, or at least risk, as a requirement of project justification for many years, however many times this process lags behind the traditional mine planning process and the results are rarely used to improve the plan. Nearly every parameter used in a mine plan is an estimate and the mine planning engineer should recognize and even embrace the inherent uncertainty in those parameters and its effect on their forecast results. While many of the uncertainties are beyond the scope of the traditional mine plan (e.g. global market uncertainty, socio-political uncertainty, environmental uncertainty), some uncertainties can, and should, be included in the mine planning process. Many mining engineers have incorporated techniques such as Monte Carlo Simulation or Discrete Element Simulation to understand the range of productivity that can be expected for an operation but most still rely upon one estimated model for what is likely the critical component of technical uncertainty, the geologic resource. Modern geostatistical methods can provide multiple ore body realizations to provide a thorough unbiased “picture” of the geologic uncertainty but most traditional mine planning techniques are not formulated to allow for multiple (100-200) realizations of each material quality/grade parameter. Commercial software companies and research groups are progressing with development of tools that can incorporate geologic uncertainty, and even optimize extraction plans in the uncertain environment. Unfortunately, this author believes that a significant number of mining operations will not be able to adopt these techniques due to the computational requirements of the advanced techniques and the costs associated with implementing proprietary software. In an attempt to encourage mining engineers to embrace the inherent uncertainty in their mine plans, this paper presents a cost-effective alternative that can be developed in-house, at any mine, to schedule mid to long-term mine plans while continuously monitoring the uncertainty in the results. The author hopes that by demonstrating the usefulness of such a system that mining companies will encourage engineers, geologists, and geostatisticians to find ways to incorporate this powerful data into their processes and procedures."

"As ores degrade, mining techniques and chemistries change to meet market demand and maintain product quality. The balance of recovery and grade is a significant challenge in the Crago Process where an anionic collector is used to float phosphate, followed by acid scrubbing, then an amine float to improve product grade. As the grade is a requirement for DAP and MAP production, recovery is the criteria to suffer. Phosphate losses in the amine float can bring overall recovery down by as much as 18%, creating a growing need to think outside the box to improve recovery. This paper will focus on the theory of amine tail recycling and the best methods to optimize the overall phosphate recovery by recycling the tails from the cleaner flotation step. INTRODUCTION In 2014 the total US phosphate production was down 13% over the prior year, from 31.9 to 27.1 Mt, which accounts for 12.32% of the world’s phosphate rock production. Florida and North Carolina phosphate production accounted for 80% of total US phosphate production, which was down from 85% the previous year. This decline is due in part to the closing of the last phosphate mine in Polk County, FL - which had an operating phosphate mine for over 100 years (Gurr, 2015). Another factor contributing to the reduction in contribution from FL & NC is the increasing challenges in beneficiating the remaining ore deposits. The Central Florida mining district has historically been in the Bone Valley deposit, where raw apatite was abundant with P2O5 values as high as 15%. The Bone Valley ore also had characteristics favorable to beneficiation to 27.5-29.7 %P2O5 while achieving recoveries above 86%. The move southward into the Hawthorne Formation has seen the ore feed grade hit some historic lows, and the matrix characteristics pose more challenges to phosphate producers. The Hawthorne Formation experienced lateritic weathering after the Bone Valley formation which altered the apatite to aluminum phosphate minerals, and alteration of montmorillonite to kaolinite, releasing MgO that caused the dolomitization of the top of the Hawthorne limestone (Cathcart, 1966). Elevated levels of dolomite can yield an increase in slurry viscosities, reduce production rates, and increase energy costs in the wet-acid fertilizer process. The MgO will also act to dilute grade, making it more difficult to achieve a standard 18-46-0 product (McHardy, 1981)."

The world's largest fluidized bed steam generator located at Rivesville, West Virginia is currently undergoing initial operation. This unit is designed to generate 3708 kg/s (300,000 Ib/hr) equivalent to 30 MWe of superheated steam while firing coal in a fluidized bed of limestone. Coal was first fired in this unit in December, 1976 and start up operation is progressing.

INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid, combustible mineral substance resulting from the degradation and alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. In this natural process of coalification, some non-combustible mineral matter is always associated with the combustible material. Coal preparation or cleaning is the process of removing this inert mineral matter from the coal. Preparation is highly successful in removing the large fragments of inert material, but is not very effective in removing the fine inorganic mineral matter intimately associated with the coal. Of the 600 million tons of coal produced in the United States every year, approximately one-half is produced by coal cleaning methods (1). The bulk of this tonnage is cleaned by coarse or intermediate gravity preparation methods (5 inches to 28 mesh, Tyler). Fine cleaning, say, -28 mesh, is done by shaking tables, washing cyclones, and flotation, or, until recently, the fines were either incorporated into the clean coal or simply discarded--not infrequently, the latter. In 1972, only 13 million tons of raw coal were cleaned by flotation in the United States, and from this 8.4 million tons of clean coal were produced (1). The percentage of clean coal produced by flotation in Europe (England, West Germany, Poland, U.S.S.R., etc.) is substantially higher. However, coal flotation has grown rapidly in the United States from only a few plants in 1950 to 31 in 1960 (2) and 66 in 1970 (1). Virtually all new preparation plants incorporate flotation into their basic flowsheet. "INTRODUCTION DC Water’s First Street Tunnel (FST) is comprised of a collaborative effort between DC Water, DC Water’s Project Consultants Organization (PCO) led by Greeley & Hansen and McMillen Jacobs Associates and the design-build team of Skanska, Jay Dee, and Parsons Brinckerhoff. The fast-track project includes elements that were designed by the PCO and released for construction by DC Water prior to Notice to Proceed (NTP) and elements designed by the Design-Builder from 30% to released for construction after NTP. This required effective communication and technical coordination for integrated engineering and efficient construction. The project, constructed in an urban residential neighborhood, included innovative construction methods such as multiple location ground freezing, utilizing a centralized freeze plant, to minimize community impact. The means and methods chosen for cast-in-place shaft linings, precast segmental tunnel lining, microtunneling, sequential excavation method (SEM) adits and near surface elements reflected the immediate and sensitive surroundings, which varied by construction staging area (CSA). Technical aspects of the project, relative to the evolution from pre-bid to construction documents, are discussed along with modified designs to suit means and methods. SCOPE OF WORK In 2012, four major storm events swept through the District of Columbia and hit the Northeast Boundary sewer shed particularly hard with the neighborhood experiencing severe flooding. The extreme nature of the flooding, the damage to private property, and the health risks associated with exposure to sewage led to a multi-agency response and community calls for answers and action. The Mayor assembled a Task Force to evaluate a range of potential actions to address combined sewer flooding including engineering, regulatory, code revision, and management improvements. The Northeast Boundary Neighborhood Protection Project was the outcome of the Mayor’s Task Force; it is a three-step infrastructure initiative designed to offload the undersized sections of the existing collection system that serves the Northeast Boundary drainage area by implementing the McMillan Stormwater Storage Project, First Street Tunnel Project and the future Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project. Until the Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project is completed, the First Street Tunnel Project will add 8 million gallons of combined temporary sewer storage in a new tunnel under First Street NW to relieve undersized sewers that traverse the Bloomingdale neighborhood."

Coal is defined as a combustible rock that originated in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man's earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks returned to earth continue to provide some answers to questions concerning the earth's origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust and upper mantle of the earth are made up of several large plates along which difEerentia1 movement (primarily horizontal) takes place. Such movements, although small, are occurring today. These horizontal movements are accompanied by vertical movements causing important changes in the relative position of the continents and oceans. Low-lying coastal swamps with favorable climates are ideal locations for coal accumulation and burial by river-borne sediments, and large areas are affected by relatively minor vertical movements of the shoreline. The large plates have continually or intermittently moved throughout the geologic past, resulting in various configurations of the continents and oceans, and coal-forming conditions have occurred at numerous times and places. Vast areas of our continents have been repeatedly inundated by shallow oceans and only relatively small parts of the present continents appear to have been above sea level throughout geologic time. Great forces acting principally along plate margins have folded and broken the crustal rocks, forming large belts of mountains.

Marketing is the linchpin of the industrial-mineral (IM) industry. Without markets and consumers for IM products, all other associated IM activities are superfluous. The simple existence of an IM deposit does not mean that it can be exploited. A dynamic interaction between exploration (geology), mining, processing, transport, marketing, sales, and consumers is required for profits. Geology dictates the existence of a deposit, but markets dictate its development, and transportation provides the connection. This is true to such an extent that marketing commonly is called the exploration phase of IMs. Marketing is strategic and includes long-range market-development and planning activities, whereas selling is tactical and more focused on day-to-day consumer interactions. Each will help the other when properly done. Many producers of IMs have failed because of inadequate marketing skill, information, and practice. Over many years at the Montana Bureau of Mines, the many developers seeking technical assistance to find an IM deposit, but who had no marketing plan, always failed. In contrast, the few who sought assistance first on marketing, with the IM deposit to be found later, always succeeded (Richard Berg, personal communication, 1998). Marketing has many facets helped by geologists who must be aware of what marketing is attempting to do. A geologist needs to understand many aspects of IMs: location (deposits, plants, consumers), processing (specifications), transportation (truck, rail, barge, ship), competition (local, regional, national, international), substitutes, pricing, and new developments and market forces of all kinds. Some needed skills are not taught formally to geologists, so well-rounded self-education and on-the-job training are the way a geologist normally enters into IM marketing. The IM geologist generally is associated with marketing either by helping to prepare a market study or by acting on the results of one. Preparing a market study is a two-part process. The first part is relatively simple but requires a time-consuming collation of data into an IM survey (mostly past-and present-oriented). The more difficult and much more important second part entails expanding the IM survey into a market evaluation (mainly future-oriented) that emphasizes forecasting, timing, location, and specific products. A market evaluation generally boils down to formulating the right questions to ask of the right persons. One very good question to ask is, "What could be the market for this specific IM?" while thinking for yourself without excessive recourse to gossip, rumors, promoters, developers, or (at times) IM experts. The evaluation must prove that market potential exists and suggests a marketing plan. Effective marketing is an ongoing process, with the initial marketing plan modified over time, using wide and continuous input to avoid tunnel vision. Industrial-mineral markets are based either on commodity (lower-priced, basic-processing) minerals or specialty (higher-priced, value-added) minerals. IM marketing methods are either product-driven (commodity minerals), a more traditional approach, or market-driven (specialty minerals), but these are neither mutually exclusive nor is one always better than the other. Focusing too much on specialty minerals can lead to problems. A blend of commodity products with specialty products commonly lowers risk and enhances long-term profits. The highest profits occur in specialty minerals at the cost of higher risk and complexity and require intelligent marketing, versatile technical services, and creative research and development. Industrial minerals are best served by an industrial-marketing approach rather than a consumer approach. Modern industrial marketing emphasizes the consumer using the "marketing concept." The marketing concept focuses all management and operational activities on total consumer management and satisfaction similar to the total quality management approaches to excellence.

Conventional round tank thickeners have been widely used in the mining industry for many years. The mining industry was well satisfied with the ability of conventional thickeners to improve minerals beneficiation operations. However, development of improved flocculants (the polyacrylamides) made possible much more rapid settling rates, since polyacrylamides produce large flocs rapidly (unlike starch or inorganics). Traditionally considered to be a slow operation if maximum underflow density was achieved, and therefore there was some justification for the expense. Thickeners required large volumes to permit sufficient time for settling. The oversize not considered a drawback but the initial capital cost was. In high rate thickeners, a bed of thickened material is allowed to build around the feedwell, even above the bottom of the feedwell. The slurry is fed directly into the bed at a velocity that allows the material to be evenly dispersed over the thickener area This more efficient use of settling area allows a higher solids throughput per unit surface area (rise rate). In this paper, high rate thickener rise rates and polymer consumption are compared.

The production of nickel coated mica composite powder by hydrogen reduction of a nickel ammine sulphate solution, followed by the production of molded plastic samples containing Ni/Mica is described. Sample preparation by injection or compression molding is outlined and the better results in compression molding are explained by the combination of better particle-to-particle contact, less particle breakage during processing, and more random particle distribution in the plastic. Three volume resistivity measurement techniques are described and compared. Two of them (conductive paint and silver-rubber electrodes) are found reliable and are used throughout the work. The influence of nickel content and particle size of Ni/Mica on volume resistivity is evaluated and the optimum product defined. One of the most important assets of Ni/Mica, its ease of injection molding, is demonstrated by the good electrical properties obtained with little optimization of the injection molding process. Surface roughness of molded plastics with and without Ni/Mica is briefly discussed. Shielding effectiveness of Ni/Mica in four plastics (PP, ABS, PBT and PC) is presented and correlated to volume resistivity data for the same materials. The addition of 15 to 50 weight % Ni/Mica (3 to 16 volume %) to plastics and subsequent injection or compression molding produces composite materials having low volume resistivities (0.03 to 1 ohm.cm) and high shielding effectiveness (40 to 70 dB).

The Gross Rosebel gold deposits are located in the Guiana Shield of north central Suriname. Initial discovery of surficial gold in 1880 by local artisanal miners preceded small-scale mechanized mining from 1885 to 1939. The first systematic exploration program was carried out by Placer Development from 1974 to 1977. In May 1992 Golden Star Resources optioned the property. Initial shallow reconnaissance diamond drilling of the extensive surface geochemical anomalies intersected sporadic gold mineralization with no apparent continuity between drill sections. Successive deep augering, trenching and systematic grid drilling based on information from surface mapping allowed development of a preliminary geological model. Further drilling of specific structural-lithologic targets and more complete synthesis of geological data from the trenching and deep auger sampling added to the geological model and defined the multiple controls of gold mineralization. Carefully planned infill drilling on a tighter grid spacing resulted in progressive definition of reserves within six discrete gold deposits. In a complex geological setting, the key to success at Gross Rosebel was persistent, systematic exploration, detailed mapping, careful core logging and perceptive geological interpretation. Reserves now stand at 48.6 Mt at 1.6 glt Au, or 2.4 million ounces of gold. The purpose of this paper is to describe the progression of exploration activity that led to the definition of substantial gold reserves and to summarize the geology of the deposits.

The Coastal Water Authority's 2,740mm/2,590mm (108 in./102 in.) pipeline, known as the Northwest Lateral Project, will transport raw water from an existing pipeline over 14.3 km (8.9 miles) to the City of Houston's East Water Purification Plant. The new pipeline crosses under Houston Ship Channel and Greens Bayou in tunnels at approximately 30.5m (100 feet) and 25.9m (85 feet) depths, which present unique experiences in tunneling under open bodies of water in the Gulf Coast's soft ground conditions. An earth pressure balance TBM is being used for the deep tunnel sections where the ground demonstrates high overload factors and variable conditions ranging from clays to silty sands. This paper discusses the design approach for the tunnels and shafts, ground conditions, constructability, and selection of the primary lining system.

The stable domestic supply of gallium, indium, and germanium has been identified as a critical need for the United States. Electric arc furnace dusts, processed to recover zinc, produce a residue that could be a potential source of these critical materials. An industrial zinc leach residue was characterized to determine its particle size, chemical composition, and predominant mineral phases. Heated, atmospheric, agitated leaching using sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid was examined to determine the extractions of gallium, indium, and germanium as a function of concentration and temperature. Extractions of gallium were found to be similar to iron in all experiments. The maximum percentage of Ga, Ge, and In leached into solution were 71%, 63%, and 48%, respectively.

During the past five years the use of all-hydraulic drilling equipment has increased rapidly, and we have now reached a point where the hydraulic drill has become an alternative to be seriously considered for every drilling operation. The hydraulic drills have many advantages over pneumatic drills, but they also have certain characteristics, which makes a potential user hesitate before making the switch. And when the decision to use hydraulic drills has been made, the user then faces another choice of equal difficulty: the choice between different hydraulic systems. This paper discusses some of the factors to be taken into account when considering hydraulic drilling equipment for rapid tunneling in hard to medium hard rock. THE CHOICE BETWEEN HYDRAULIC AND PNEUMATIC EQUIPMENT The choice between a hydraulic and a pneumatic drill is much more than just that: It is a choice between two different systems. The choice is usually based on the productivity, economy or ergonomy of the system. However, also other factors should be considered, such as service capabilities and training requirements. And finally the choice will be influenced by the need to acquire know-how in the new technology. Porphyry type copper ± molybdenum deposits typically occur in the Phanerozoic rocks and have been well documented. During the past two decades a number of porphyry type Cu ± Mo deposits which range in age from 1055 ± 35 Ma to 2970 Ma have been identified in the Precambrian rocks of Australia, Canada, China, Finland, India, Namibia and Zambia. Kalanjkhand porphyry copper deposit M. P., India which is estimated to contain 789 million tonnes averaging 0. 83 percent Cu (millhead-grade); 0.004 percent Mo; 0.2 gm/t Au; 6 gm/t Ag and a cap of 7.532 million tonnes of oxide are averaging 0.8 percent Cu. The economic potential of the expanded copper mining milling, smelting and refining complex to be built in the future at Kalanjkhand, which is the largest porphyry copper deposit discovered to date in the Precambrian rocks of the world is presented.

At present, there are two known cobalt deposits in the 48 contiguous states. This paper is a brief description of one of these deposits. It is a Mississippi Valley type deposit, but somewhat atypical in that the metal of greater interest is cobalt as opposed to lead, zinc, and copper. The history and present work are outlined along with a discussion of the geology and mineralogy.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis to investigate the bonding mechanism which occurs during the dewatering of clay slurries. High molecular weight polymers are used as flocculating agents in these processes. This investigation presents the results of an FT-IR study of calcium-exchanged montmorillonite treated with polyacrylamide (PAM) and polyethylene oxide (PEO). Both thin film and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectroscopic techniques were employed to study this clay-polymer system~ Results suggest PAM is adsorbed to the clay via the nitrogen atom of the polymer. A water bridge is involved in the bonding between the clay and PE~. Evidence also suggests that PEO may be adsorbed directly onto the surface of the clay.
