This paper discusses the overall challenges to construct a two-lane highway tunnel located in southwestern Colorado on U.S. Highway 160 for the Colorado Department of Transportation by the Kiewit Western Company. The purpose of this project is to provide the excavation and temporary support for a highway tunnel 280 m (916 feet) long. The tunnel cross section is 14.3 m (47 feet) wide by 8.5 m (28 feet) high, 105 m2 (1,130 SF).Construction methods include conventional drill and blast excavation with rockbolt and shotcrete ground support. This unique tunnel is being constructed under alpine tunnelling conditions and in the immediate vicinity of active highway traffic.

Two cemented paste backfill (CPB) formulations containing pyritic tailings were leached in deionized water in flooded and alternating air-flooded environments and in a simulated acid rock drainage-type (ARD) solution. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), solid phase chemistry and acid-base accounting measurements documented the weathering characteristics of the CPB samples. Short-term exposures of the portland-CPB samples preferentially dissolved the cement binder to a greater extent than slag-Portland CPB mistures. In all cases, the added neutralizing potential provided to backfill by cement was short-lived and insufficient to neutralize the acid generating potential of the mixture.

Despite reef structures being relatively common in carbonate rocks around the world, tunneling experience in reefs is extremely rare. Impacts and risks associated with reef tunneling through these geologic features were also relatively unknown. A new reef was encountered during construction of the Lower Pogues Run Tunnel in Indianapolis, exposed over 5,000 linear feet along the alignment, resulting in adverse impacts on construction. Analysis of investigation data and construction from this encounter provide insight into the identification and characterization of reefs along tunnel alignments as well as the potential impacts on construction for future tunneling within reef structures.

During the past three years, coal samples covering a range of coal rank, ash content, size consist, grindability, and moisture content have been tested for their flow properties using a triaxial shear tester that measures the unconfined yield strength in a compressed sample of coal. The ratio of this unconfined yield strength to the sample bulk density is part of the equation used by handling system manufacturers to calculate the critical arching or critical ratholing diameter needed to ensure that coal will flow from bunkers or bins. This ratio also serves as an index to compare the flow tested. To test the applicability of the index to predicting problems with coal flow, a series of tests were conducted at CO Inc.'s Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) in Homer City, Pennsylvania. Tests covering ranges in size consist, moisture content, and ash content were conducted by first filling a small two-ton bin with coal and then emptying the bin at a pre-set discharge rate. The actual discharge rate from the bin under the various conditions tested was measured. Samples of the coal discharging from the bin were collected. One sample was analyzed for ash, moisture, and size consist; another sample was sent to the Iowa state University for trivial shear tests (supplying an index measurement). Actual flowability results from the bin were then compared to the measured index to determine the applicability of the handleability index in actually predicting coal flow problems. This paper describes the correlation between handleability index and bin flow and explains the next stages of the project.

This paper explores the impact of the significant difference between the number of geochemical assays conducted for grade estimation and the number of comminution tests performed for throughput and performance forecasting. Both grade and throughput are key factors in determining the project. We analysed 154 feasibility study reports to assess the impact of sample frequency for comminution test work on project revenue. This disparity in size between assay and comminution data arises because geological and resource-grade risks cannot be managed without extensive geochemical testing, whereas comminution risks are traditionally mitigated through design methods and the use of contingencies. This approach is partly due to the relatively high cost and large sample requirements associated with traditional comminution tests. Our analysis demonstrates that insufficient comminution sampling and testing leads to uncertainties in throughput forecasts, creating significant financial risks. Data from the feasibility studies show that a 1% change in mill throughput can result in up to a 5% variation in Net Present Value (NPV), underscoring the sensitivity of project economics to operational performance. Building on previous work, we reference studies that reveal how low frequency of comminution testing can increase uncertainty in mill throughput forecasts and increase financial risks. We propose an approach that optimises the number of comminution samples tested to enhance forecast accuracy and reduce NPV variance. By adopting this approach, mining projects can improve financial reliability and mitigate risks associated with underperformance in SAG and AG mill-based operations.

Coalbed methane (CBM) is currently being produced from a relatively small area in the Dunkard and Pocahontas basins, in the northern and central parts of the Appalachian Basin, respectively. In general, much of the production occurs where the coal beds are beneath 500 feet or more of overburden, where the rank of the coal is high-volatile B or greater (%Ro >0.8), and where the natural fracture system is enhanced by structural deformation. It is anticipated that near-term CBM development will continue within these areas and will expand in the Appalachian basin as technology improves and as the price of gas rises.

"Highwall miners have been widely used to extract additional coal reserves from existing surface operations, particularly on contour operations in the Appalachian coalfields. Using a continuous miner cutting head, coal may be extracted from significant depths (such as 150 m), leaving behind an array of web and barrier pillars with the purpose of maintaining highwall stability. This method inherently involves elevated risks to both equipment and personnel due to proximity to and increased exposure time near highwalls. As a result, modern operations should actively design web and barrier pillars to maximize extraction while providing adequate stability. The ARMPS-HWM software, an empirical-based program created for the design of web and barrier pillars at highwall mining operations, is one such approach. The calculated stability factor is compared with empirically established guidelines produced from examining case histories.The ARMPS-HWM program is a handy tool for initial design, but understanding the site’s structurally significant geologic features and geomechanical behavior is important and may potentially increase extraction. We created a two-dimensional numerical model using FLAC3D and calibrated it to ensure pillar strength, closely following the Mark- Bieniawski formula for a typical range of pillar geometries and overburden properties. The development of pillar stresses along a highwall panel was then numerically investigated as mining progressed, and the stress distribution between barrier pillars was found to be asymmetric, which can result in an over-design of the closeout web pillars if tributary area loading is assumed. Finally, the importance of adequate barrier pillar stability is highlighted."

Since early 1973, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has been actively engaged in the utilization of coal mine refuse in the design and construction of highway embankments. The Soils and Geological Engineering Division of the Bureau of Materials, Testing and Research has the task of managing the program which includes field investigations, laboratory testing, engineering evaluation, planning, coordination, implementation, construction control, and review of construction performance. The objectives of the utilization program, in removing colliery refuse banks and utilizing the material in construction, are the environmental and aesthetic rehabilitation of those areas in the Anthracite and Bituminous coal fields which have been plagued for such a long time by air and water pollution, and unsightly landscapes; and the economic rehabilitation of those areas occupied by refuse banks by providing usable land which can now be developed as residential, business, or industrial sites.

The microstructural relationships in dolomitic fluxed taconite pellets were studied. The influence of basicity (in the range 0.75 to 2.1) and firing temperature (to 1340°C) on the grain structure, macrostructure, and mineralogical phase relationships are described. Extensive slag bonding of hematite grains begins at temperatures between 1220 and 1230°C, and results in fundamental changes in grain structure. Successive temperature increases result in little change in grain structure until 1340°C, when extensive coalescence of the hematite grains begins.' Increasing flux additions have little effect on grain structure but greatly influence pore character. The compressive strength decreases with increasing flux addition, increases with increasing firing temperature, and is related to the macrostructure of the pellet. The compositions of the slag phases are represented on the CaO-Fe2O3-SiO2 phase diagram, and the compositional path of slag development is described.

The conversion of organic matter to petroleum by hydrothermal activity is an easy process, occurring in nature in many types of environments. Geologically immature organic matter of marine sediments is being altered by this process in Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California), Escanaba Trough and Middle Valley (northeast Pacific), Bransfield Strait (Antarctica), and Atlantis 11 and Kebrit Deeps (Red Sea). Contemporary organic detritus and viable microorganisms are also converted in part to petroleum-like products by the same process when present to become entrained, as for example on the East Pacific Rise at 13o N and 21o N and on the mid-Atlantic Ridge at 26oN. The hydrocarbon products (methane to asphalt) generated in all these areas have been elucidated in terms of composition, organic matter sources, and analogy to reservoir petroleum. This petroleum represents a major input of carbon to the primary chemosynthetic productivity of hydrothermal vent systems and may be important to interactions with metals in hydrothermal ore formation.

13.1-SUBSIDENCE AND GROUND MOVEMENT ROBERT STEFANKO 13.1.1-SUBSIDENCE AND FAILURE This treatment of subsidence and ground movement will be confined to subsidence control for limiting surface damage by assessing the significant parameters affecting ground movements during mining to optimize mining techniques. The material will be equally applicable to evaporite mining as well as coal but will not deal with block caving or similar systems where failure is deliberately induced and surface protection is not necessary or provided. When an underground opening is established, the original equilibrium is disturbed with resultant stress concentrations. While many factors are involved in opening stability, the span (W) undoubtedly is one of the most important factors in failure. Assuming it is relatively small, the overlying rock strata can bridge across the opening and little if any movement or convergence of top and bottom will occur. However, as the span increases, a point is reached where the stress in the overlying rock strata exceeds some strength value of the rock, and the top breaks. If the opening span is limited to some subcritical value (-We) and/or is at great depth (D), a pseudo-arch will form, achielring stability before rupture occurs to the surface. The boundary of this arch is thought to approximate an ellipse in form with the major axis vertical and equal to four times W, although there has been little field research to substantiate this theory. However, if the width of this opening is increased at this horizon to some critical value (W,) or the same span is created in a shallower seam, the overlying strata ill progressively rupture to the surface and the characteristic subsidence trough is formed (Fig. 13-1) The area of the surface affected is much greater than the area of the seam extracted, depending on the "angle of draw" (a), which is the angle between a vertical line from the edge of the opening and another line extended to a point at which subsidence tails out to zero. This angle has been found to be about 35° in Europe but is rather academic, being a function of instrument precision in detecting subsidence. Since the subsidence effect is so small at any point beyond n 25° angle, this latter may be considered the practical limit of subsidence. Further- more, indications are that the angle of draw varies with depth and nature of the strata.' In a field study over a 1,000-ft-deep potash mine in New Mexico, the maximum angle of draw was found to be 51.5°.2 So far, only a single opening has been considered. However, the width of the excavation applies to any complex mining system of entries, rooms and longwalls as long as the seam has been fully extracted and the width represents the distance from one solid rib to another. It will be noted that the amount of vertical displacement varies from point to point on the surface (s), but the maximum subsidence for a given trough occurs at the center (S). This latter value may not he equal to the maximum possible subsidence (Sm) which occurs only if a critical or super- critical (+W,) width has been exceeded (Fig. 13-1). Substantial surface damage can result when subsidence occurs. Factors affecting the amount and type of ground movement are: thickness and properties of the seam, angle of draw, width of excavation, depth and type of overburden, inclinations of strata and surface, and the amount of support left in the gob. Seamounts, submarine banks, volcanoes and undercurrent channels are prominent geomorphic features that have become an important target for minerals research and exploration with the goal of future exploitation. Polymetallic ferromanganese deposits are common types of mineralization on these settings. Co-rich ferromanganese crusts are important as potential resources of Mn and Co, but also Ti, Ni, Tl, REEs, PGEs, and other metals. Many seamounts and channels along the Atlantic Spanish continental margin are known to hold mineral deposits but are poorly studied. This work presents and briefly describes the most recent activities of the Spanish Geological Survey (IGME) on exploration and investigation of ferromanganese deposits along the Atlantic Spanish continental margin. Different submarine areas from the northwestern margin of the Iberian Peninsula to the west off Canary Islands have been surveyed by geophysical, sampling and underwater observations from 89 to 4000 m water depth. The mineral deposits cover a large diversity of submarine geological and geomorphical features: mud volcanoes and diapirs related to hydrocarbon seeps, seamounts associated with hot spot volcanism, hydrothermal vents in active magmatic volcanoes, structural basement highs and banks or contourite channels. Considering the collected dataset, we present the preliminary results of the study of these mineral deposits, including ferromanganese nodules and crusts and phosphate pavements and nodules, which can be considered as potential sources of raw materials.

The TRJV Mine is located approximately 43 miles northeast of Winnemucca, along the east flank of the Osgood Mountains in the Potosi Mining District, Humboldt County, Northwest Nevada (see Figure 1). The Turquoise Ridge Mine is an underground mine, and is a 25% joint venture partner with Newmont Mining. The TRJV mine utilizes the underhand cut-and-fill mining method due to the relatively low rock quality in the ore zones and the relatively shallow dipping 25-45 degree ore body geometries. This paper defines a rehabilitation risk rating system (RRRS) for prioritizing rehabilitation of drifts damaged in the mining processes including long term development drifts providing access to the mining areas. The ultimate use is as a mine planning tool for the organized scheduling of rehab in a timely manner. A few case studies of the most needy rehab areas identified by the RRRS mapping system is presented, and the type of rehab completed design for these areas. Suggestions on improving the rehab risk mapping system include the use of support history and rock mass strength rating factors.

The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially in this area: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia; historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to/the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills; on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon; and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape face or is of major importance in this area; and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type.

Deregulation, as authorized by the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (PL102-486) allows free-market competition in the electric-utility industry. As the act unfolds, though, uncertainties abound about the type, degree and direction of impacts throughout the affected economy — from fuel suppliers to electricity generators and from power distributors to energy consumers. Instead of having a familiar base of captive customers and electricity prices fixed by negotiation with state public utility commissions, utility companies are preparing for open, free-market competition. They are looking at all areas, including fuel supply, to cut costs to remain competitive. Humorous anecdotes are told about utility companies shunning insiders for senior executive positions. Instead, they are opting for people from the telephone or other industries with deregulation experience. And there are light-hearted stories about a trend away from traditional electric-company names, such as the name of a city or state followed by Edison or Power and Light, to space-age names, such as Ameren, Entergy, Illinova or Unicom. No one wants to be left behind or be perceived to be left behind.

Lignin, the second most abundant natural polymer and bi-product of the pulp and paper industry, has been commercially available in a number of forms since 1940. This growing industry is fueled by demand in traditional applications. Reagents that offer unique solutions in various mineral process applications are examples of advanced uses that also fuel growth. These applications include flotation reagents in fluorspar, bastnäsite and potash, as well as in the zinc pressure leach process. Due to the fact that no concerted effort has been made to find applications for modified lignosulfonates, it is quite possible that this natural material will find use in other benefication processes.

Dust control in high production longwalls is a major problem requiring, among other things, careful attention to the design of operating practices, and ventilation schemes. Several studies have shown that the shearer is the major source of dust on a longwall face. Support movement has not been regarded as a major source of dust in U.S. longwalls; yet under certain conditions, 31 percent of the shearer operator's dust exposure can be due to support movement. Several methods have been developed for the control of shield-generated dust. Yet the need for better methods is apparent. In this paper, the amount of airborne respirable dust generated per shield move is estimated from specially designed experiments on longwall faces. A total of ten experiments were conducted in five longwall faces in four different mines. Each experiment involved one face visit and lasted three to six hours. The contribution of shield movement to the airborne respirable dust concentration immediately downwind of the shield moved, varied between 0.12 and 1. 75 mg/m3 in the five longwall faces. The mass of airborne respirable dust generated by shield movement was found to vary between 39 and 386 milligrams per shield move. The results from this study reveal that control of dust from longwall shields requires a combination of approaches involving alternative operating practices, reducing shield dust generation rate, increasing face air flow, and decreasing personnel exposure.
