Controlled release systems delivering the required concentration of an effective bactericide over an extended time period have been developed by The BFGoodrich Company's ProMac® Systems group. The ProMac system is site-specific and includes a four-step approach to controlling acid mine drainage (AMD): (1) Diagnosing the problem, (2) Prescribing the treatment, (3) Supervising the application of controlled release bactericides, and (4) Honitoring the success of applied treatment. The success of the ProMac system is evidenced by improved water quality, healthy vegetation, a reduction in levels of acidophilic thiobacillus, and a corresponding increase in population of beneficial microorganisms.

Although most bauxite mined is used to make metallic alu¬minum, more than a million tons of bauxite is used annually in the United States in the manufacture of refractories, chemicals, abrasives, and cement. Raw material requirements are becoming increasingly difficult to meet because high-grade bauxite, required for some uses, is limited. The supply of raw material for high-alumina refractories is most critical because a low-iron bauxite is needed. Although there are substantial bauxite reserves in the world, bauxite suitable for use in refractories is limited to a few districts.

Conventional mine safety wisdom states that "the most efficient mines are also the safest." Since the 1980s, small mines (and contractors) have been targeted as the most dangerous because of their fatality records. However, statistical analysis of West Virginia safety and production data from 1993 indicated that, when considering the correlation between accident severity and tons mined per employee-hour worked, the most efficient mines were, with the exception of very small mines, not the safest operations. This paper presents the results of an extended analysis of West Virginia mine safety using 1993 and 1996 data and concludes with the method used to suggest current priorities for focusing interventions.

In the Western Coal Region, successful reclamation of surface-mined areas includes the protection of groundwater sources. To accomplish this, a complete understanding of the geohydrology of the affected area is imperative. Successful mine design also calls for careful attention to geohydrology. Because the Western Coal Region is semi-arid land used mainly for farming and grazing, groundwater is a particularly sensitive topic. It is especially sensitive where the lignite scheduled for mining is itself the aquifer supplying the farms and ranches. Such is the case throughout much of the Western Coal Region, particularly where there are no near-surface sand and gravel aquifers that are commonly found in the glaciated portions of the Region. Just as mining can adversely affect groundwater supply, so can groundwater adversely affect mining. Mine flooding and highwall instability are examples of this. But, mine operators must realize that procedures they use to remedy geohydrologically-related mining problems can have a dramatic effect upon ground- water conditions in areas adjacent to the mine. A logical precaution is to require the acquisition of complete baseline data prior to making the first cut. We recommend that the mining plan not only incorporate the reclamation plan, but that they be developed as one plan.

The concept and operation of novel shaft sinking systems utilizing roadheader-type cutter booms, including mucking, conveying, and hoisting installations, are described. Selection criteria, performance data, and economic considerations for various shaft excavators are presented. Various applications of this low-cost and flexible system for civil engineering and mining projects will be discussed. The cutter booms can work in both soft ground and competent rock. Furthermore, the novel excavator can operate in ground stabilized by grouting, cementing, and freezing. The flexible cutting system can be used both for excavation of shafts, foundation pits, slopes, and for tunneling (drifting).

In this paper a method is presented for estimating the specifications of sandstone-type uranium deposits which will be the minimum that can meet a company's economic requirements for investment. The method interpolates and extrapolates from available cost data for typical mines to provide the costs for a wide range of possible deposits. The range of deposits achieving the company's required discounted cash flow rate of return on investment at an estimated uranium oxide selling price is then calculated, thus giving the complete range of deposits which meet the minimum required specifications. Prospects are then evaluated by comparison with these minimum requirements.

In the mining industry, conversion of fine particles into a slurry is often part of the normal processing of the ore. Therefore. from a system's point of view, slurry transportation would be considered as a natural alternative, all the way from the working face to the final processing. In underground mines, there is sometimes a considerable inflow of ground water that has to be pumped out. When the mine dewatering installations are integrated with a hydraulic hoisting system, the cost of power needed to pump out the ground water can be excluded from the cost of hoisting, compared with other modes of transporting the solids to the surface. The chief advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the hoisting capacity can be increased at comparatively low total cost without necessitating the sinking of new shafts. Alternative examples include deepening of the existing mechanical hoisting system, truck, or conveyor belts transport in ramps to the present level. These often become very expensive. The economic effectiveness of hydraulic hoisting and hydraulic design considerations have been discussed by Kostuik (1965) and Sellgren (1985, 1986) for both small shallow mines and large deep underground mines. Objective and scope The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasibiliy of hydraulic hoisting in hypothetical examples of mine deepening. Underground grinding to a maximum particle size of about 700 um (about 25 mesh) is considered. The pumping of ground ore products with positive displacement plunger or membrane type of pumps at working pressures of up to 15 MPa (2200 psi) is a thoroughly tested technique (Venton, 1986). Hydraulic hoisting system A hydraulic hoisting system is described schematically in Fig. 1. The ore is mined, handled, and crushed conventionally. It is then ground wet underground. The slurry is then temporarily stored in an agitated tank and pumped to an agitated receiving tank on the surface. The ore is then further processed in the concentrator. The capacity of a pipeline is very high. For example, an annual production of 500 Kt (550,000 st) of ore can be handled in a 100-mm-diam (4-in.-diam) pipeline. Systems layout - economic effectiveness Schematic mine layouts are presented that represent situations where hydraulic hoisting often is the most economical alternative. A situation where the ore is trucked to the level of the existing hoisting system is shown in Fig. 2 (following page). With hydraulic hoisting, only a shaft for ventilation, pipe- line, and personnel are needed. In a first phase (Fig. 2). a hydraulic hoisting installation with crushing and grinding units, storage facilities, and pumps has been located at a level of about 400 to 600 m (1310 to 1970 ft) below the surface. The problem of increasing underground mine ventilation efficiency is still of top priority. The complication of geological conditions with the depth of underground mining processes and reinforcement of requirements to technological and ecological safety are extorting the necessity of solving this complex problem with using of new information technologies. There exist different approaches to the ventilation problem. One of them, which the authors adhere to, is based on the concept of monitoring (under special mining and geological conditions-automatic control) of mining atmosphere and operative re-distribution of underground mining air among consumer , in accordance with the criterion of optimality [ 1.3 1. ] The set of tasks which should be decided in the frame of con- crete ventilation system depends on the peculiarities of deposit, technological schemes and so on. Nevertheless, some ventilation tasks such as: defining of ventilation network parameters; finding of dependence between these parametrs; operative redistribution of air streems, could be interpreted as universal ones. Main aspects of practical solving of different ventilation problems and their classification were investigated and considered in detail before [I ,2 ]. Some years ago we have began our investigations to develope quite simple and effective methods for decision of ventilation tasks on the base of neural network technology. It is well known that ventilation net, formed by various mine workings, is the main component of underground mining ventilation system. In general, network air distribution may be described by some functional F(Q,R,H), where Q- is a vector of air consumptions; H- is a vector of depressions; R- is a vector of airdynamic resistences. (Q,R,H) - are the informative entities , characterising every branch of the net. There exist some fundamental tasks which should be decided during the process of control of mining ventilation: calculating of natural air distribution Q = Q,{R, H,}, or Q = Q2(R, Q?}, where H, - is the maximal depression of the ventilation net, Q, - is the air consumption in the ventilation shaft; identifying of airdynamic resistance for some branches on the base either of air-depression removal or operative monitoring: [ ]

As was the case with many other mining companies, the management of Tennessee Copper Company' viewed with some interest reports in various trade and technical journals of the successful use of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures as an explosive in coal stripping., construction, open pit mining and finally in underground salt mines. The apparently simple transition from the "interested" stage to a point where in excess of 80% of the ex¬plosives used is ammonium nitrate may be of interest. The Tennessee Copper Company operates five mines in the "Copper Basin" of Polk County which lies on the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee. The ore is a massive sulfide principally pyrrhotite and pyrite with some tough lime silicates as gangue while the walls are greywacke interbedded with schist. Average total production is 28,000 tons per 5-day week and an average of 422 feet of development per week. Development work consists of 8'x 8?, 6?x 7?, 5'x 7? and 4'x 6? drifts driven with drifter drills using 1-5/8" carbide detachable bits and 5'x 5' raises driven with stopers using 1-5/8" bits.

This paper describes an integrated procedure for the very short term production planning of an open pit and the execution of this plan: the truck dispatching. Integration of plan and dispatch means that the plan is realistic so that its objectives can be realized by the dispatch. This realism is obtained by supplying the plan optimization, which involves mixed integer programming, linear programming and non-linear programming, with experimental O.R. models of waiting and blending. The arrangement of these models in the computer programm has made it possible to obtain very short computing time for the planning in spite of the width of the optimisation. The dispatching of a truck is made by solving a classical assignment problem for each dispatch over a horizon of the expected*next 10-15 trucks to request dispatches. This deep-reaching dispatch procedure uses the continuously arriving information about trucks' positions and shovels situations and models by probability functions the expected waiting time of shovels and trucks. In this manner trucks and shovels are synchronized and last moments' opportunities for productivity gains can be obtained. The dispatch procedure takes .5 second on PDP11. This integrated planning and dispatch procedure gives high productivity while ensuring good blending. Results from the Mount Wright mine of the Quebec-Cartier Mining Co., where the integrated procedure has been installed on the existing computer equipment PDP11, are included.

Open pit mining is the strong sector of the American mining industry. In the middle of the 60's. 17-18% of the ore in metal mines was mined with underground methods. From the middle of the 60's to 1980 the production in open pit metallic mines increased from about 400 to close to 600 million short tons while at the same time the underground mine production decreased a little, from about 90 to about 80 million tons. Less than 15% of the ore prodction now come from underground mines. Large amounts of waste rock were also handled in the open pits. In the middle of the 60's about 600 milion tons were handled, in 1980 1,200 million tons were moved. This means that the average stripping ratio increased from about 1.5 to over 2.0 tons of waste rock per ton of ore, figure 1.

Anenopyrite, both pure and in some cases associated with pyrite, was laboratory roasted either isothermally or at a constant heating rate, at temperatures mainly between 723 and 923 K and under environments of air, sulfur dioxide, oxygen and argon, as well as S02/02/H20/N2 mixtures. The mineralogy, arsenic contents and in some cases surface areas of the calcines were evaluated so as to provide an enhanced understanding particularly of the conditions under which the important transformations to pyrrhotite and magnetite occur. A thermodynamic analysis is also undertaken to rationalize the observations and provide some guidance for the operation of commercial roasters.

Emerging drilling fluid technologies will demand environmental considerations from mined components with additional emphasis on cost and performance criteria. Drilling fluids providers continue to search for and identify environmentally sensitive components which meet or exceed the performance of their more toxic predecessors. These changes have and will impact the components of drilling fluids that are mined.

Public Law 75-87, the Surface :mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), Section 516(b) requires the underground coal mining operator to "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material carnage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonably foreseeable use of such surface lands, except inn those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner . . .?. The Congress also directed the Secretary of the Interior to promulgate regulations to implement the law. As a result, the control of subsidence from underground coal mining to minimize surface damage has become the mandate of a Federal law. This paper discusses the mechanics of subsidence and the effects of subsidence on ground features and also summarizes some of the measures which have been used to minimize the possibility of damage to surface structures as a result of subsidence due to underground coal mining.

Over 95 percent of the world's refined copper is now produced by electrolytic processes. The bulk of this electrolytic copper comes via the conventional route for sulfide ores of concentration, smelting and electro-refining. A rapidly increasing percentage of world production is now achieved using hydrometallurgical routes involving dissolution of the copper values from minerals, purification of the resultant leach solution by solvent extraction and finally deposition as cathodes by electrowinning. The technology can now be considered mature and this paper endeavors to summarize recent developments which, from the authors' perspectives, are important.

Lightweight concretes date back to before the Roman Empire. The earlier concretes were made by combining a burnt lime for cementious material with pumice or volcanic rock for aggregate. Although structural value was limited due to its primitive nature, many structures were able to withstand the test of time. The rotary kiln expanded shale industry had a slow start that began around 1908. The industry was founded by Stephen J. Hayde of Kansas city, Missouri. Mr. Hayde noticed that the bloating effects of some aggregates were undesirable by the brick industry. Material of this type was considered waste and avoided in brick production, but he realized it had all the qualities and basic requirements for a concrete aggregate that would reduce weight and still retain structural value. It came into national attention by use in ocean-going vessels through a shipbuilding program undertaken by the united states Fleet Corporation. This research was brought about by the need to find a suitable material to replace high-grade plate steel due to a shortage created by World War I. The need prompted the government to supply the reserves that Stephen Hayde desired to continue and complete research into producing a uniform lightweight aggregate. His results pointed to the rotary kiln method for which he was granted a patent in 1918. One of the most famous and largest concrete ships built through this program was the U.S.S. Selma. Good morning, it is truly an honor to have been invited to speak before you today Before I begin my update on MSHA's activities, I?d Like t o quickly say a few words about the American mining congress and its mission in Washington, AMC is a national trade association representing most of the producers of the nation's metals, nonmetals and coal, we also represent the manufacturers of mining equipment and supplies and the financial and consulting institutions which service the mining industry. It is the diversity of our representation which gives us our greatest strength in our petitioning efforts, the administration and the members of congress know that an AMC position is the result of the careful consideration of a vastly diverse group of mining concerns. Our president, Al Overton, perhaps has the best description of AMC when he speaks of us as "the mining industry's eyes and ears and its collective voice in Washington."
