INTRODUCTION At the time the 4th edition of this book was published in 1979, the coal industry had experienced a sharp upturn in prices for its product. From 1950 throgh 1969, steam coal prices had held almost flat at about $5 US per st (about $5.50/t). Thus, when considering the effects of inflation, the price of coal had actually been declining for two decades. The passage of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act in 1969 and its cost effects started an upward trend in coal prices which was rapidly accelerated by the effects of the Mid-East oil embargo in 1972. Prices of steam coal on the spot market eventually climbed to over $30 US per st ($33/t) and higher in some cases. Metallurgical coal prices skyrocketed in a similar manner and the industry at long last appeared assured of an adequate return on investment. Many companies did expend large sums of money to upgrade and expand their mining and preparation facilities. Unfortunately the bubble eventually burst, in great measure due to the downturn in the US domestic steel industry and the resultant decline in metallurgical coal demand, loss of export markets to other nations and even imports of large amounts of foreign coal to the United States, and more stringent environmental regulations which made many high sulfur coal measures uneconomical to mine. Compounding the problem was the rapid world decline in oil prices in the mid-1980s which encouraged many consumers to utilize oil rather than coal. During the 1980s, metallurgical coal dropped over 20% in price, which, when considering inflation, actually amounted to about a 40% decrease in value. Export coal decreased a similar amount in price. Steam coal prices held nearly constant, thus also losing considerable value when inflation is considered. All of these factors make it even more imperative than ever that the industry do everything in its power to make wise economic decisions and to examine carefully all existing operations and planned future expenditures to be certain that their full cost implications are understood and that they can be justified on the basis of an adequate return on investment. It cannot be assumed that the price of coal will increase. To the contrary, as indicated previously, when considering inflation, coal decreased in value in the 1980s, just as it also did in the 1950s and 1960s. The price surges in the 1970s merely were a catchup game, and in truth the true market value of coal is in reality even lower than it was in 1950. The Fence Lake Project is located in the Salt Lake coal field, an extension of the San Juan Basin. Geologic formations exposed in the Project area range in age from late Cretaceous to Quaternary. Coal is encountered in the Moreno Hill Formation (upper Cretaceous). Salt River Project (SRP) followed the basic textbook approach for the exploration, regional appraisal, detailed reconnaissance, detailed surface appraisal and three dimensional sampling (physical exploration). SRP is exploring this property as a potential fuel source for the Coronado Generating Station. Therefore, for the physical exploration stage, the quality sampling program was designed from a utility company viewpoint to determine possible impacts to the Station. Exploration drilling was completed in spring, 1982; September, 1982, and summer, 1984. Engineering, environmental, and land acquisition studies were added in the Summer, 1984 Program to more closely evaluate the potential Fence Lake Project coal supply option for the Coronado Generating Station. Studies, including drilling, are ongoing-at this time.

In this work, we propose to implement machine learning methods for the automatic classification of mining-related seismic data. The approach retained for the classification is based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) which has been tested and applied to two different mining datasets: the active ore mine of Garpenberg (Sweden), currently under exploitation, and the abandoned coal mine of Gardanne (France), where mining stopped in 2003. The first step of the approach consists in creating a well classified (manually) database of seismic signals separated in different classes as a function of the seismic sources. The selected database is then divided into two groups: train, containing the 70% of the signals, and test, which contains the remaining 30% of the signals within the selected database. The learning phase of the algorithm consists in creating a classification model based on the train group, which is further validated on the test group. The application of CNN for the automatic classification of Garpenberg and Gardanne seismic data shows, respectively, that about 88% and 98% of the seismic events of the two sites can be properly classified. These results demonstrate that machine learning could be a powerful tool for microseismic monitoring in mining and post-mining environments, which could be further extended to the whole automatic processing of seismic data, including signal’s classification as well as microseismic event’s localization.

Ground control analysis and groundwater inflow assessments for underground coal mines require in-depth field investigations including, but not limited to, geological and geotechnical core logging, downhole geophysical logging, laboratory rock strength testing, and packer (Lugeon) testing. Field and laboratory data collection are time consuming and expensive, and an initial understanding of the expected trends among various geotechnical and hydrogeological parameters can assist with the planning and optimization of geotechnical characterization studies and grouting plans. In this study, a comprehensive database is analyzed, comprised of important rock mass characteristics (hydraulic conductivity, rock quality designation (RQD), and lithology) for coal-bearing rocks in the Central Appalachian Basin. Statistical analysis of the data is completed to establish an enhanced understanding of geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions expected to be encountered as underground coal mining passes near and beneath streams and rivers. The results of the study provide valuable reference material for the coal mining industry for completion of shaft installations, mine stream crossings, environmental assessments, and grouting and mine dewatering designs.

Tremendous strides have been made in front end loaders in the last fifteen years. Fifteen years ago a 2; cubic yard front end loader was the largest standard machine you could purchase. Today there are two commercially available 15 yard front end loaders and many 10 yard front end loaders. The estimated total worldwide market for all front end loaders over one cubic yard has increased to over 30,000 units yearly. The trend for front end loaders, in general, and for the mining market, in particular, is to larger and larger loaders. Today there are 18 cubic yard and a 24 cubic yard front end loader in prototype form. It is not inconceivable that within another fifteen years that there will be front end loaders in the 50 cubic yard class with design features quite different from today's. These larger loaders are being designed at the demand of the mining industry and the design criteria are being directed at this market area. The costs of these larger loaders will be greater per unit of capacity, and it is the intent of the various manufacturers that they will be more reliable, be easier to service, give greater availability, live longer, and cost less to maintain, than previous loaders. It is also the intent of the manufacturers to compete directly with the large mining shovel as the front end loaders become appropriately larger and more reliable. There has been some trend in this direction in the past with smaller shovels and loaders. In Figure No. 1 are data for U.S. production of front end loaders (5-6 cubic yard class and 10 cubic yard class) and U.S. production of cable operation, crawler mounted power shovels, draglines and cranes (1; to 5 cubic yard class) for the years 1965 and 1970. "INTRODUCTION The recent drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a co-product of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut-off 10% of the world’s vanadium output. Earlier in February, 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation. This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries namely, China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 98% of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains by far the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage. This paper summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal. TREND IN VANADIUM EXPLORATION The most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grade than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers. The 10% shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the State of Bahia in Brazil, which commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to reach design capacity of 11,400 tonnes of vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) by the end of 2015. The estimated production1 for 2015 is 6,500 tonnes of V2O5 at a target production cost of $3.60/lb. This is the first vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in over 35 years."

"Estimation of rock drillability is vital for mining and boring operations. For this purpose, many researchers have developed various models and equations to estimate rock drillability. Most of these models aim to determine the drillability of rock and the penetration rate by using the physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Although drillability primarily depends on rock properties, other parameters have an impact on drillability as well. One of these parameters is the rotation speed of the bit. This study investigates the effect of rotation speed of the bit on drilling performance. Drilling tests were performed in the laboratory using rotary core drilling and a diamond drilling machine. The relationships between the physical rock properties and the penetration rate were investigated on 15 different rock types and four different rotation speeds were applied to determine the effect of rotation speed of bit on drilling. The uniaxial compressive strength, density, and P wave velocity show strong correlations with the penetration rate. In addition, if the values of the physical and mechanical properties of the rock increase, the effect of the rotation speed on the penetration rate decreases, i.e., increasing the rotation speed of the bit slightly affects drillability on hard and solid formations. 1. Introduction Drilling is one of the most essential operations in the mining industry, beginning from the exploration phase and continuing throughout all stages of production to the end of mine life (Taheri et al. 2016). In addition, drilling is widely using in the construction industry and other engineering operations. Various drillholes (blastholes, injection holes, borehole, diamond wire holes in natural stone mines, etc.), are needed during development and production activities in underground and open-pit mines as well as in dam, tunnel, road construction and sewage systems. For effective drilling operations, it is first necessary to gather information about the formation to be drilled. Drilling should then be performed after selecting appropriate drilling equipment and drilling parameters (thrust, pressure, rotational speed, flushing). Prediction of the drillability of rocks is vital for planning and performing the drilling process. Although, drilling is affected by several factors, the most important ones are related to the geological and mechanical properties of formation (Protodyakonov 1963, Paone et al 1969, Tandanand and Unger 1975, Pathinkar and Misra 1976, Rabia 1985, Perrin et al 1977). Determining the penetration rate is vital for planning a project and calculating the operation costs. The prediction of drilling affects the selection of drilling equipment, the efficiency of drilling equipment, project costs and the process of drilling operations."

Induced seismicity is deeply related to various engineering projects entailing anthropogenic in-situ stress change in deep underground. Hence, there is a persistent demand for estimating and mitigating the risk. Significant efforts have been made in simulating induced seismicity with a variety of numerical simulation techniques; however, there are still discrepancies between characteristics of induced seismicity numerically simulated and observed in the field. One of such discrepancies is the simulation of triggered seismicity defined as seismic events caused by an infinitesimal amount of anthropogenic stress change, which is frequently observed in geological structures. The present study aims to develop a methodology to simulate triggered seismicity whilst reproducing a complex stress state in a fault zone. For the purpose, a discrete fracture network within a fault damage zone is first generated. Then, an equivalent continuum model, in which each zone has a different anisotropic compliance tensor, is constructed by employing the crack tensor theory. A fault core is simulated at the center of the model with interface elements. Using the equivalent continuum model, an initial stress condition is simulated with the boundary traction method, which results in a very complex stress state with stress anomalies due to the stiffness anisotropy and heterogeneity. Subsequently, the effective normal stress on the fault plane is decreased in a stepwise manner to induce slip. The result demonstrated that many seismic events are induced on the fault plane with a slight decrease in the confining stress, thus being regarded as triggered seismic event. Further analysis on this seismic activity shows that the magnitude of triggered seismic events is inconsistent with the amount of shear stress drop, implying that a relatively small triggered seismic event could produce a large stress drop, generating locally intense ground motions and thus inducing severe damage to the nearby rock mass.

The amount of fine material (minus 60 Tyler mesh) generated during calcination and/or handling of calcined abrasive grade bauxite from Alcoa's operations at Moengo, Suriname, has recently increased relative to past production experience. Bulk samples of raw abrasive grade bauxite from three deposits in the Moengo area have been studied in order to determine the factors controlling the generation of fine material samples from the Jones IC and Tapira deposits, which generate excessive amounts of fine material, have been compared with reference samples from the Begi Gado deposit, which does not generate excessive fine material. Additional type samples of abrasive grade and marginal abrasive grade bauxite from deposits in the Moengo area which represent different bauxite textures found in the Jones IC, Jones I, and Begi Gado deposits have also been studied. Field observations in the Moengo area have indicated that abrasive grade bauxites with a dull, earthy appearance generally do not generate excessive fines. On the other hand, excessive fines are generally associated with coarsely crystalline bauxite in which the gibbsite crystals appear to sparkle in sunlight.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the various designs and design alternates available for large fine crushing plants, and to discuss objectives and criteria upon which these designs are founded. Common practice for size reduction of run-of-mine or run-of-pit ore in preparation for subsequent treatment utilizes a three-stage system. First stage, or primary breaking is generally carried out with jaw or gyratory crushers. The usual output from this stage provides a feed for fine crushing in the size range of 6 to 10 inches. This discussion is limited to the process of fine crushing, and we will further limit it to what is commonly called secondary and tertiary crushing. We define a large crushing plant as one with a minimum capacity of 2,000 tons per hour. Generally, these plants utilize cone type crushers to reduce ore for rod, ball, or pebble mill feed.

In recent years increasing attention has been given to improving both the chemical and physical properties of sinter. The first step toward this goal was the production of a self-fluxing-sinter. More recently, blast-furnace operators have found that significant improvements in blast-furnace performance can be achieved by improving and controlling the physical size of the sinter. The results of full-scale blast-furnace tests have shown that blast-furnace production can be improved by using a closely sized agglomerate. The improvements obtained by the use of pellets, a closely sized agglomerate, are well known. In contrast, blast furnaces charged with sinter having a wide size spectrum have generally not yielded results as satisfactory as those from furnaces 1) * charged with pellets. Beginning in 1958, Appleby-Frodingham charged plus 3/8-inch sinter to their blast furnaces. Further tests by other companies in Canada, 2) the United States, 3) and Australia showed that blast-furnace production could be improved by about one percent when the plus 3/8-inch material in the burden was increased by one percent. Because of the promising results obtained with screened sinter, an extensive test program was initiated to determine an effective means of producing sized sinter in U. S. Steel's sinter plants. This paper describes the work done by the Applied Research Laboratory in this program.

Climate change presents risks to mine infrastructure, operations and long-term obligations to protect environmental conditions. Management strategies and design of infrastructure and containment systems based on past or current climate conditions may be inadequate in the future if changes in climate are not taken into account in planning for mine operations, decommissioning, closure and post-closure. Data-driven assessments using climate model projections of the future can be used to quantify: • Changes in site-specific risks to mine structures, access, containment facilities, operations and staff safety. • Changes in vegetation and water balance/chemistry, and potential for acid mine drainage, erosion and design failure. Climate- and weather-related risks are a serious threat to the mining industry, but risk transfer solutions can alleviate these vulnerabilities. Mining companies can protect themselves through bespoke solutions which provide operators, investors and buyers with protection against weather-related disruptions to operations by hedging to smooth revenues. Using risk transfer structures to mitigate climate risks is a mechanism that is available to all types of mining operations world-wide. In this paper, we describe methods for evaluating site-specific climate change impacts and developing risk transfer solutions to mitigate their effects. EVALUATING MINE RISKS FROM CLIMATE CHANGE The best available tool for understanding potential future changes to the earth’s climate system are global climate models (GCMs) (IPCC, 2014). GCMs are computer simulations of the climate system which include the atmosphere, ocean, land surface, cryosphere and biosphere. Because of the computational demands of running a global model for many decades, the spatial resolutions of the GCM grids are necessarily coarse, typically on the order of 100-300 km. GCM data are therefore suitable for evaluating future physical risks on global or continental scales, but may not be appropriate for evaluating location-specific risks (e.g. Kotamarthi et al., 2016). For site-specific, quantitative physical risk assessment, GCM projection data are “downscaled” or adapted for use at the local level using statistical techniques together with observed data (statistical downscaling) or using high-resolution regional climate models (RCMs) that focus on a single geographic region and have spatial resolutions of 10-50 km (dynamical downscaling). Downscaling bridges the gap between the GCM scale and regional/local scale. Through the downscaling process, new information is added to the GCM output from observations and/or RCMs, resulting in patterns for weather variables that are more consistent with local terrain and weather influences. Downscaled climate change projections for the mine site are selected considering mine location and geography, the availability of local observations, and the performance of the downscaling method and global/regional models used to develop the projection in simulating the variable under study. Where possible, we use projections from an ensemble of global and regional model runs spanning a range of future greenhouse gas (GHG) scenarios.

In open pit mining every effort is made to maintain as steep a pit slope as possible. Pi t slope angles are influenced by numerous factors some natural that are amenable to limited or no control at all and other mining technology related where a greater degree of influence can be exerted by the engineer. One such area where control is possible is the method of drilling and blasting in the pit. This paper discusses the influence of blasting techniques on the economics of pit slopes and demonstrates how balanced blasting can be used with advantage to pit wall control and improve fragmentation (thus reducing material handling costs). Microprocessor based instrumentation to monitor drill and blast performance has also been described.

Microwave pretreatment can improve grindability by weakening brittle particulate material prior to size reduction. The differential thermal expansion experienced by multiphase materials during rapid heating can also promote damage in the grain-boundary region, which may ultimately translate into enhanced liberation. The effect of microwave pretreatment on the breakage characteristics of different ores has been studied using the Ultrafast Load Cell. The energy accumulated during impact (fracture energy) and the particle stiffness have been measured for untreated and microwaved ore samples. It has been observed that microwave pretreatment can weaken brittle multiphase particulate material, as observed by reductions in fracture energy and increase in damage.

As an advanced method of rock engineering construction safety monitoring, microseismic monitoring technology can monitor the micro-fracture of rock masses within an effective range, and then perform forecast analysis of rockburst, cracking, falling blocks and other disasters. Although the application of microseismic monitoring technology has become more mature, how to improve its application efficiency remains to be further studied. At present, artificial intelligence has been extensively developed, and the use of intelligent algorithms to improve the efficiency of rockburst forecast can provide a valuable reference for the safe construction of underground engineering. To this end, this paper proposes a microseismic multi-parameter rockburst early warning model based on dynamic Bayesian networks. First, the sensitivity of microseismic source parameters to rockburst forecast is analyzed based on microseismic monitoring data and actual rockburst information of a hydropower station. Second, the main seismic source parameters and their data are selected and imported into a dynamic Bayesian network for learning to obtain the rockburst forecast model. The model is confirmed in its self-validation and K times cross-validation, and the receiver operating characteristic curve of the model is also analyzed, it is found that the area under the curve is close to 1, indicating that the model has good accuracy. Finally, the analysis of the influence strength of the parent and child nodes in the model reveals that the moment magnitude and source scale are the most sensitive parameters, which can be used as an important reference for rockburst forecast.

In the Frick District of U, So Steel Corporation, we have had more than 37 years of experience in the use of multiple-fan ventilation systems, in our coal mines. In our Colonial field, with a long belt installation, we have mined 85 million tons of coal with the use of the multiple fan system of ventilation. In our Palmer field, with the use of the same arrangement, we have mined 90 million tons of coal--a total of 175 million tons without one accident attributable to improper mine ventilation. The same system, fundamentally, has been installed in our expanding Robena operations and at its present stage of development we are using eight fans to ventilate this area. To date we have mined 55 million tons of coal with very encouraging results and again without any accidents attributable to ventilation.

Blending inevitably occurs to some degree during mining and mineral processing operations. Traditional mine scheduling assumes that all variables average linearly, which allows the calculation of the blended material properties as a linear weighted average. However, metallurgical properties such as metal recovery and Bond Work Index (BWI) are known to average nonlinearly. The nonlinear properties of the blended material can be calculated using nonlinear blending models. A simulated annealing algorithm is developed and applied to a short‐term mining face optimization problem to maximize the total metal recovered considering nonlinear blending. Compared to a standard schedule plan, the optimized one shows relevant improvements in synergistic and antagonistic blending behaviors.

We have heard a lot during the recession about the mining industry now competing in a world market for sales of such commodities as copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, iron ore, and phosphate. If the US mining industry is to survive, do we not have to reduce direct operating costs to a minimum? How significant is labor cost compared to consumables, electricity, fuel, maintenance, materials, and transportation? Ore grade is ultimately the dominant factor; but can we offset its dominance by improving productivity? Is the US mining industry perhaps only 25-30% as productive as it might be? What prevents the industry from being more productive? Can we retrofit older plants to be more productive or does it take a new plant with the largest equipment available for each unit operation? Present Productivity A copper industry study a few years ago covering 13 US copper concentrators ranging from about 10-45 kt/d (11,000-50,000 stpd) showed that productivity did not vary with capacity above 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). Operating productivity varied significantly, however, from about 180-635 t/d (200-700 stpd) per operating hourly worker in most units, but one operation had 900 kt/d (1,000 stpd). Concentrators with more than 545 t/d (600 stpd) per hourly worker were in the 23 kt/d (25,000 stpd) or more category. Maintenance productivity covered about the same range, but most concentrators were in the 270¬635 t/d (300-700 stpd) per hourly maintenance worker. Again, one company stood well above others by exceeding 1 kt/d (1,100 stpd). Total hourly productivity ranged from 125-280 t/d (140-310 stpd) per hourly worker for most concentrators. The company with the most productive operation, however, was above 455 t/d (500 stpd). Salaried worker productivity for most operations was in the 725 t/d to 1.2 kt/d (800-1,300 stpd) per salaried worker range. The best operation was 2.2 kt/d (2,400 stpd). The end result is, of course, tons per day per total personnel. Most operations fell in the 110-220 t/d (120-240 stpd) range with the best operation at 400 t/d (440 stpd). This is the productivity definition that is most directly related to unit costs. Many of these operations have made some productivity progress

"The construction of mechanized tunnels in soft ground has evolved significantly over the last 20 years, especially in the control of the face pressure and the closure of the soil-lining void to reduce the induced settlements. On the other hand, several mechanisms of the TBM excavation cycle are still not taken into account for routine design calculations, such as the increment of water pressures in front of the tunnel face, the flow of excavation fluids around the shield, the dynamic equilibrium between the grout pressures and the excavation convergence, among others. This paper discusses specifically the issue of face pressures and how several mechanisms, which are routinely not considered, can be easily verified and incorporated into the state-of-practice of design. INTRODUCTION The stability of underground excavations is traditionally assessed through analytical solutions based on the lower bound theorem of plasticity (Atkinson and Potts 1977; Mühlhaus 1985) or the limit equilibrium method (Anagnostou and Kovári 1994; Messerli et al. 2010). These methodologies depend on the tunnel geometry, certain ground parameters and the support pressure. When conventional construction methods are used, the internal support pressure is an abstract representation of the combined effects of partial excavation, ground reinforcement, and the different support elements. The use of closed-face tunnel boring machines (TBM) changed this perspective, as the magnitude of pressures acting on the excavation boundary could be controlled in a more direct way. In front of the TBM the ground is excavated as the cutterhead rotates and the cutting tools scrape the ground from the tunnel face while additives are injected to condition the material. Water, polymers, bentonite, and foam can be used as additives under different conditions (Thewes et al. 2012). The loosened ground with additives, herein referred to as the mixture, flows through the openings at the cutterhead and into the excavation chamber. This mixture is kept pressurized to support the face."

Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. is actively involved in improving the reliability of mining and processing equipment through the use of failure analysis and condition monitoring activities. Program results include an increase in equipment capacity and an overall reduction in operating costs. The identification of equipment failure modes and the development of associated capital asset management practices can minimize failure consequences. Successful programs have included; alterations to management practices, equipment modifications, and/or the implementation of condition monitoring programs. By controlling or minimizing the effects of incipient equipment failures, corrective actions can be taken earlier in the failure cycle, resulting in an associated reduction to repair costs and equipment down time.
