The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory research to determine the applicability of heavy liquid separation to the evaluation of certain mica ores and plant products. After careful standardization of the particular mica ores and associated gangue, accurate analysis of muscovite content could be obtained from results of heavy liquid separation. Where applicable, the method should be particularly suited to the analysis of ores and control of plant operations wherein savings in time would be of considerable advantage. Specifically, there are many instances where a quick plant control method should enable the production of a more uniform grade of mica concentrate. The laboratory use of various heavy liquids for separating minerals of different specific gravities has been recognized for many years.1-8 Sink-float procedures have proven their utility as a rapid and moderately accurate means for determining the mineral content of ores, test products, and plant products in certain nonmetallic concentrating operations. A standard method of analysis for mica in ore samples has not been published or generally accepted by the mica industry. Recently, the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated methods for analyzing mica by heavy liquid separation. This report has been prepared to make the methods available to others who may need simple, relatively rapid methods of determining the mica content of ores and plant products. The heavy liquid method of mica determination has recently been adopted by one of the major mica producers for evaluating exploration and mill control samples. DESCRIPTION OF THE ORES AND HEAVY LlQLllD The weathered mica pegmatite ores used in the investigation were obtained from commercial mica op erations in Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. The major mineral constituents of the ores were muscovite, quartz, kaolin, and minerals of the feldspar group. The ores also contained minor quantities of biotite, limonite, and tourmaline. A comparison of the specific gravities of the major constituents of the ores (muscovite 2.76 +, quartz 2.65, kaolin 2.61, and feldspar 2.57), indicates that an effective separation of muscovite from the other minerals can be made in heavy liquids at a specific

Discussion of the paper of Charles R. Keyes, presented at the Spokane meeting. Bulletin o. 34, October, 1909, pp. 867 to 903. A. M. STRONG, Bishop, Cal: (communication to the Secretary*) The paper of Mr. Keyes gives us the most complete account of the geology of the borax-deposits in the Death Valley region that has yet been published, and is a valuable addition to the geological literature of a very interesting though little-known territory. During the past ten years I have been over much of the northern part of the country described by Mr. Keyes and the region immediately north of it. Mr. Keyes seems to give the impression that Furnace creek is the northern end of these borate-bearing deposits, but such is not the case. Of the seven principal marsh-deposits which for years furnished the greater part of the borax supply in the manner described by him, four are north of the boundary-line as given on his map. The entire territory immediately east of the Sierra Nevada is composed of a series of sinks, each with a well-defined drainage-area.. Of these, Death valley is the deepest, and its drainage-area one of the greatest. The section given in the paper is typical of any line drawn eastward from the Sierra Nevada. At the lowest point of each of these sinks is a marsh, which, in times of heavy rain-fall in the mountains, is converted into a lake. These marshes always contain borax, which is now considered to have been derived from the washing of the Tertiary lake-beds in the surrounding mountains, of which they form a considerable part. Additional territory which I have studied shows that the boundaries given on Mr. Keyes's map should be considerably extended to the north. This paper is concerned with the effect of propping-agent concentration on flow capacity of a fracture in the case in which there is embedment of the propping agent. Previous published studies have shown definitely that there is a relationship between fracture flow capacity and prop ping-agent concentration, and it has been shown that the theoretical results are confirmed by laboratory experiments. The problem of directly finding sand concentration for maximum flow capacity of a sand-propped fracture is solved, and formulas and charts are given to obtain this concentration under various conditions of effective overburden pressure, medium sand-grain diameter and rock properties. It is shown that, for the same effective overburden pressure and the same rock characteristics, optimum sand concentration in pounds per gallon does not depend on medium sand diameter. For conditions met in bydraulic fracturing operations, it is found that sand concentration in grains per square inch for maximum flow capacity varies within a wide range of values; this indicates the convenience of using data of fracturing pressure and rock characteristics for calculating sand concentration in order to achieve the best results in fracture treatments. INTRODUCTION It has been pointed out in the published literature1 that one important factor controls the success of a hydraulic fracturing operation — the propping of the fracture. The main effect of the propping agent is to hold the fracture open by means of the reaction forces that oppose the pressure due to the overburden. It is assumed in this paper that the propping agent is sand, that the grains are spherical and uniform in size, and that this sand is distributed in a monolayer in the fracture. The existence of a sand concentration value for maximum fracture flow capacity has been recognized since the publication of one of the first studies on the subject.2 In the reference cited, flow capacity was assumed to be proportional to the cube of the fracture volume per square inch not filled by sand. The obtained experimental curves relating to flow capacity and sand concentration had the same appearance as the curves obtained with the afore-mentioned assumption. Recent work3 has shown that fracture permeability, in the case of a monolayer, can be calculated accurately by means of a modified Kozeny-Cacman equation; thus, it can be shown that fracture pqmeability is a function of free volume in the fracture and of the rock and sand wet surfaces. The flow capacity of a fracture is dependent on the permeability of the fracture and on the fracture width. If all excessive quantity of sand is present in the fracture, its width may be large but its permeability i:; low due to the greater flow resistance; too few grains of sand per square inch are present in the fracture, sand embedment in the rock is greater and the width becomes small enough to appreciably decrease the rate of flow. To determine optimum conditions of flow, therefore, it is necessary to know the dependence of fracture width on density or concentration of propping agent. This relation is given in a study4 in which the approach to embedment is similar to the one made in a penetration hardness test of metal. With the equacions presented by Darin and Huitt,3 the number of sand grains per square inch that results in maxirnum fracture capacity can be determined graphically by plotting fracture capacity vs sand concentration. Since the relationship between fracture capacity and sand concentration may be considered known, one is led to formulate the analytical problem of directly determining sand concentration for maximum fracture flow capacity, in order to study the effect of the various quantities that come into the process. The solution of this problem appears to be interesting both from the viewpoint of fluid mechanics and from the practical viewpoint of oil production in hydraulic fracturing treatments. A considerable saving in time and money has been effected by use of a specially designed stainless steel container for laboratory drilling mud test work. This container involves use of a standard tall-form stainless steel beaker for service in which the mud sample is heated to an elevated temperature and maintained there for protracted periods of time, while undergoing agitation to facilitate mixing of mud components. Agitation is accomplished by rotating the filled containers on motor-driven rollers within an oven. Several porcelain balls are generally placed in the containers to further improve agitation. Soft glass containers (.Mason jars) were used in this service in early work, and were found to be unsuitable for the following reasons: 1. Poor resistance to thermal shock. 2. Containers could withstand only relatively low pressures. 3. Accidental breakage in handling. 4. Chemical deterioration and subsequent mud contamination from reaction of high pH muds with the glass at elevated temperatures. Pyrex containers were also considered, but, inasmuch as they provided improvement only in items 1 and 4 listed above the additional cost was not believed to be justified. THE object of this paper is to make a brief comparison of the out-lines of several forms of ports for steel-melting furnaces, in reference chiefly to the proper mixture of the gas and air, and to the direction in which the flame is thrown down into. the interior of the furnace. In the illustrations on the accompanying plate, Fig. 1 shows a form of port designed by M. Pernot, of St Chamond, France. This is used with the dome roof preferred by him for the revolving bottom that bears his name. From No. I has been derived No. 2. This is shown on the plans of Mr., A. L. Holley, and from them three large furnaces have been built and put into operation by the Springfield Iron Company. Fig. 3 shows an outline proposed by Messrs. Richmond & Potts for the Pernot furnace. In this the ports are brought in under an arched. roof of nearly the ordinary form., instead of over the top of the roof, as with the done of M Pernot, Fig. 4 shows a furnace as built by Krupp of Essen, Prussia, for fluid refining, or “washing” -to use the briefer French term. PUBLIC lands in Florida were first withdrawn from entry by President Taft on July 2, 1910, as a conservation measure because of their possible phosphate content. The reserve thus established was subsequently modified by further withdrawals and by restorations, so that on Jan. 1, 1934, it contained 66,796 acres, of which only a small part had been definitely classified. The reserved land was in scattered parcels, ranging from less than 40 acres to 320 or more, distributed in many counties. For administrative purposes and for final disposal of any of the numerous parcels, mineral classification of the land is legally necessary. In 1934 and 1935 the United States Geological Survey, under two successive grants from the Public Works Administration, prospected some 83 tracts of these lands in Polk County, comprising in all about 3300 acres, and six tracts comprising 240 acres in Citrus and Marion Counties. The tracts in Polk County were all in the so-called land-pebble field and the others in the hard-rock field. The Survey field party was under the direction of P. V. Roundy, from whose unpublished report the material in this paper is largely taken. The foreman of the prospecting crew was J. H. Wingate of Zephyrhills, Fla. The individual tracts were identified through the cooperation of the General Land Office, by transitman Hugh B. Crawford. This prospecting work fitted well the classification adopted for Public Works projects in general: it could not be done on any considerable scale under the Survey's usual appropriations; it gave employment to unemployed labor; and it may be expected ultimately to repay the Government in royalties more than the cost of the exploration. THE derivation of the word tire (or tyre, as it is spelled in England) is obscure. Some dictionaries suggest that it is the aphetic form for "attire, covering," so called as being the outside covering or band of a wheel; also as a corruption of "tier," the band which holds, or "ties," the rest of the wheel together. One dictionary states: "The supposed derivation of the word is that bands were first used on wheels in the City of Tyre, Syria. " In the infancy of railroads, the tracks consisted of flat baits of iron, spiked or bolted to the upper surfaces of longitudinal timbers, which; in turn, rested upon masonry foundations. Stone blocks installed for this purpose on the old Germantown & Norristown Railroad, now the Chestnut Hill branch of the Philadelphia & Reading Railway, were to be seen for many years on the right-of-way, north of what is now. Wayne Junc-tion, Philadelphia, Pa. The "cornerstone" of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was laid Apr. 4, 1828, and the first locomotive in America was built by Peter Cooper at the St. Clair Works, Baltimore, Md., in 1829 "to demonstrate its adaptability to a curved road." It is believed that the first successful locomotive was built in Philadelphia by Tyler & Baldwin in 1832 for the Germantown & Norristown Railroad. Rufus Tyler-and Matthias Baldwin were brothers-in-law; the latter's name will he identified with American locomotives until locomotives are forgotten. The Wheels on these first locomotives, designed to run on this primitive rail, were shod with plain iron bands, bent and welded. The flanges consisted. of separate iron bands, bent sidewise, welded, and, bolted to the sides of the wooden follies, or rings. Before many years had elapsed the tires were fabricated of iron bands, rolled in one, piece with the flange projection on the side. The tire for each wheel was bent and welded and subsequently attached to the wheel center by shrinkage, bolts, rivets and various mechanical devices.

INTRODUCTION The stress redistribution accompanying the excavation of a deep tunnel may induce failure of the rock. The role of the support system is to control the extent of the failed region and hence to limit closure of the tunnel within an allowable amount. In such circumstances, the design of the support system is generally based on the Ground Reaction Curve (GRC). The GRC is the relationship between the support pressure and the induced displacement at the tunnel wall for a circular tunnel under hydrostatic loading. In the calculation of the GRC (see Brown et al. (1983) for an exhaustive list of reference), the rock is generally treated as an elastoplastic material characterized by cohesive-frictional yield strength and by dilatancy during plastic deformation. A recent analytical development (Detournay, 1983) has allowed the generalization of the GRC concept for some cases of non-hydrostatic in-situ stress fields (Detournay and Fairhurst, 1982). As an application of that development, this paper describes design charts that provide powerful means of performing parametric analysis for tunnels subject to non-hydrostatic loading. BACKGROUND The in-situ stress in a plane perpendicular to the tunnel axis can be decomposed into mean and deviatoric components, Po and So (see Fig. 1). Since it is assumed that the rock is characterized by a Mohr-Coulomb yield strength, the deviatoric invariant So must be less than the limiting value Sl0 given by

One of the difficulties encountered in the preparation of titanium specimens for transmission electron microscopy is the formation of a surface hydride phase during the thinning operation at ambient temperatures. This necessarily destroys contrast, obscures features of interest, and often leads to misleading results. By cooling the polishing solution to temperatures below 0°C this problem has been overcome in the past.' However, since the cooling procedure is somewhat inconvenient, a technique was developed at this laboratory for thinning titanium at room temperature. The material examined was A-70 grade commercial-purity titanium purchased from the Crucible Steel Co. of America. The mechanical and thermal treatments, described elsewhere,* yielded a recrystallized grain size of 4 to 5 p. A slice, 0.5 mm thick and 1.5 mm wide, was cut from a bulk specimen2 using a diamond cut-off wheel. The sample was then coated with paraffin wax. Two concentric holes, about 0.03 in. in diam, one at each broad face, were scribed through the wax to the surface of the metal. Subsequent polishing for several minutes resulted in a preferentially thinned or "dimpled" region. Thereafter, the wax was removed and the entire specimen polished to the point of breakthrough at the base of the dimple. Polishing was effected chemically in a solution comprised of 30 pct HF and 70 pct HN03 by volume, kept at room temperature (20" to 25OC). The specimens were mounted in a stereo holder and examined at 100 kv in a Philips l00 B Electron Microscope. A micrograph from a foil prepared in this way is shown in Fig. 1. Several points are noteworthy. This electron micrograph shows neither evidence for the formation of a hydride phase due to specimen preparation nor, moreover, any obvious surface contamination in electron-transparent areas of a freshly prepared foil. Localized variations in foil thickness observed in some specimens seem to be a characteristic of this chemical polish but do not seriously detract from foil quality. With care, the lifetime of a good specimen exceeded 2 hr in the beam. On the other hand, the exposure of a sample to air at atmospheric pressure, when still warm from the beam, clearly resulted in the deterioration of a formerly clean area just previously in the field of view. An example in Fig. 2 of a contaminated region reveals features, and "spots", not unlike those observed in much purer material by Yamane and Ueda. Consequently, one can conclude that: 1) titanium can be thinned satisfactorily in a solution at room temperature for transmission electron microscopy; 2) large-scale precipitates, >50A in diam, are absent in commercial-purity, recrystallized, furnace-cooled, A-70 titanium containing about 3800 wt ppm interstitials and the same amount of iron; 3) care must be taken not to attribute surface contaminants to precipitates. At the close of the year, despite a` number of unexpected decreases in receipts, it had proved possible to accomplish substantially all the work laid out and close the books with the usual transfer of initia¬tion fees to the General Reserve, and still only reduce the cash balance $2,074 54. This was made possible by the hearty and loyal cooperation of the whole staff of employees and the extremely large amount of gratui¬tous service rendered by the officers, the members of the Divisions and technical Committees, and the membership generally Even so it was impossible, because of limitations of funds, to undertake many things it is highly desirable for the Institute to do, and it was necessary to refuse the publication of important papers and committee studies, because of the lack of funds.

In the Mitsubishi beneficiation process of ilmenite, chlorine is regenerated in the dechlorination furnace where the gases produced from a selective chlorination of ilmenite are directly introduced. The present paper describes a reaction mechanism and mixing characteristics of the reactant gases for dechlorination of ferric chloride with oxygen. A furnace of a small diameter where the reactant gases passed through in the state of nearly plug flow was used for determination of the effects of temperature and of partial pressures of ferric chloride and oxygen on the rate of the reaction. The experimental data of the reaction rate were applied to various models for calculations of the rate equations and the most suitable reaction model was determined. The results of the experiments also showed that effects of gas mixing onto the reaction rate could not be ignored, so that experiments of gas mixing was carried out. Gas flow patterns and scale effects were observed with use of transparent model furnaces of different sizes.

This article proposes a physical model for an idealized binary mineral system and for the process of liberation by size reduction. Based on this model, equations are derived relating the amount of each component liberated as a function of the ratio of the volumetric abundance of the two mineral components and the ratio of the mineral grain size to particle size. A definite relationship is shown to exist between the mineral concentration within a locked particle and the frequency of occurrence of such a particle. These relationships are used to obtain theoretical expressions for the concentration-recovery diagram. Physical mineral beneficiation processes are based on breaking a mineral aggregate to liberate the dissimilar mineral grains and then making use of their physical properties to separate the mixture into its components. The effectiveness of the process is therefore dependent on how well the minerals are liberated and how efficiently they are separated. Although a substantial amount of work is being done to improve our understanding of mineral separation processes, the study of mineral liberation itself has been almost completely neglected. The purpose of this theoretical study is to shed some light on the liberation phenomenon by: 1) proposing a physical model for an ideal binary mineral system, 2) treating mathematically the fracture of this system into liberated and locked particles, and 3) deriving an expression for the liberation characteristics of this system. The results of this study are useful in understanding the effect and importance of various parameters in liberation, and provide a basis for comparison with real mineral systems. 'RANDOM' MODEL It is recognized that liberation can be caused by detachment which results from fractures occurring at the mineral grain boundaries, or by size reduction which restricts the occurrence of dissimilar mineral locking to a portion of the resulting particles. The detachment effect is dependent on the relative strengths of the mineral grains and the bonds between them, and must be treated empirically for each mineral system. The size reduction effect, however, can be treated analytically if certain assumptions are made concerning the shape and geometrical arrangement of the mineral grains.

It is a pleasure for me to keynote this first Western Regional Minerals and Coal Conference here in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is pleasing for two main reasons. First, Homestake Mining Company has been associated with the Black Hills since 1875 when gold was discovered following Custer's trek through the Hills during 1874. Second, the future mineral development of the Black Hills will depend, to a great extent, on minerals and metals covered in this conference. The metals and minerals that are featured in this conference have unique similarities--and important differences--and therefore, will be of great interest to all who are involved in our industry in this area of the country. Precious metals have always been, and likely will always be, subject to political influence; they are only partially affected by the demands of our industrial economy. Energy minerals, while more directly affected by industrial stimulus, are also politically sensitive. In this regard, the need for a minerals policy affecting the energy sphere has been made very clear to us in the last five years. More importantly, the lack of a national policy and purpose relating to our total future energy needs has severely affected the overall economy and security of this country. Very briefly today, I would like to outline for you my thoughts on the future of these most important minerals. I will start by a discussion of precious metals, primarily my favorite precious metal, gold. A brief history of gold will be helpful in setting a perspective for forecasting its future although it is difficult to give a brief description of a metal that has been prized by man for over 6,000 years. Pressure information for use in material-balance calculations is obtained, where possible, from pressure build-up surveys in shut-in wells. Using proper extrapolation methods, static pressures are obtained which, by averaging, give the field static pressure. Often, particularly in fields with a large number of wells, only spot pressure readings are available. A graphical method is presented here which enables the determination of the corrections which must be applied to the spot readings to give an estinzate of the static pressure. Although the static pressures thus obtained are not so reliable as those from build-up surveys, they are more nearly correct than the spot readings themselves for use in material-balance calculations. INTRODUCTION The average static pressure in a bounded reservoir is determined from a number of individual-well pressure measurements. Where pressure build-up curves are available, extrapolation methods such as described in Ref. 3 may be used to determine the static pressure in the drainage area of each individual well. The possibility of using pressure build-up curves presupposes that each well being surveyed is closed in during a certain period and that, during this time, a pressure recorder is left suspended in the hole. For surveys in fields with a large number of wells, this is usually not feasible for economic and other reasons. Either a large number of pressure recorders would have to be used simultaneously or, using a limited number of recorders, the time interval needed to complete a field-wide survey would be too long. The data obtained for this incomplete coverage are insufficient to permit reliable averaging of the few calculated static pressures over the entire reservoir. In many such cases another type of pressure information is available, i.e., spot pressure readings. During this type of pressure survey all wells are closed-in simultaneously and, after a reasonable shut-in time (e.g., three days), pressure readings are taken by running the recorder in and out of each successive well. These surveys, which are less expensive, are often taken at regular intervals, say once or twice a year. In fact, such surveys are required by the state regulatory bodies in many portions of the united States. These spot readings are normally lower than the static (fully built-up) pressure due to the relatively short shut-in time. No direct means of extrapolating such a reading to the static pressure is available because no pressure build-up record is obtainable. Consequently, these data are inferior to pressure build-up information as a basis for estimating the stabilized reservoir pressure in the drainage area of a specific well. For the common case where abundant spot readings but only a few pressure build-up surveys are available, our studies suggest that it may be possible to design a program which will combine the two types of information and provide an estimate of the average reservoir pressure that is more reliable than that obtainable solely from either set of data. in time) gives a point marked p. Portions of this paper repeat in substance the statements made by me in an address before the meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials, held in June, 1903, at Delaware Water Gap, Pa. The views I then expressed, I still hold and believe to be pertinent to the present discussion of this subject. In doing my part, therefore, at the request of our Secretary, towards the further consideration by the Institute of the Physics of Cast-lron from a commercial as well as a theoretical standpoint,—a theme which received interesting treatment in our meeting some years ago, but has been somewhat neglected recently,—I make no apology for reiterating the views I have expressed elsewhere. Indications all point to the substitution of classifying pig-iron by chemical analysis for the old-time method of grading by fracture. Commencing with the larger users, and the makers of specialties, who require more positive information as to the composition than is afforded by the fracture; the use of pig-iron, guided by analysis, has spread with much greater rapidity to all classes of foundry-work than the most sanguine expected. Grading by fracture, as guided by experience with any particular brand of iron, has some points in its favor. T HE creep behavior of many polycrystalline metals at moderate stresses can be described by the empirical relationship: where Em is the minimum creep rate, A is a constant, a is the applied stress, E is the average elastic modulus at the test temperature, and D is the self-diffusion coefficient.&apos; This equation is generally applicable for strain rates of less than around 10-5 per sec and temperatures greater than about one-half the melting point in absolute units. Under these conditions atomic mobility plays an important role in the deformation process, and steady-state creep occurs when a dynamic equilibrium is reached between the generation and recovery of dislocation substructure. Although several theoretical mechanisms have been proposed to explain the creep of polycrystalline solids,2"4 the dislocation climb model2 is in accord with most experimental observations. The majority of creep data used to develop Eq. [1] came from metals with either the fcc or hcp crystal structures. However, on the basis of results for a and 7 iron as well as those for a and a thallium, Sherby concluded that the high-temperature deformation behavior of close-packed metals and bcc metals is probably the same.&apos; The greater creep resistance of fcc and hcp metals and alloys on a relative temperature scale was attributed to lower diffusivities in the close-packed structures. To further compare the creep properties of fcc, hcp, and bcc metals, creep data for all six bcc refractory metals were analyzed according to Eq. [I]. The results are shown in Fig. 1. The sources of information for the quantities used to prepare this figure are listed in Table I, except for high-temperature elastic moduli. The latter data were obtained from Refs. 28 and 29. The dashed lines in the figure represent the range and breadth of data analyzed by Sherby for fcc and hcp metals. In general, the deformation behavior of all of the refractory metals, ex- cept possibly that of tungsten, can be represented by Eq. [1]. This correlation is strong evidence of the similarity that exists between creep of pure close-packed metals and creep of pure bcc metals. At (Em/D) < 108, the results of Flagella and Tarr on tungsten (W-1 in Fig. 1) agree with the five-power stress law, while those of Green (W-5 in Fig. 1) show a seven-power stress dependence. Where (Em/D) > 108, the stress exponents for other data on tungsten were in the range 10 to 15. It is possible that the creep rate dependence on stress in this region is not a power law but exponential (i.e., Em - eßo). However, it was not feasible to differentiate between these two cases because of the steep slope and scatter in the data. Note the inflection point in the curve for the data of Flagella and Tarr (W-1 in Fig. 1). The slope of the line changes from 5 to around 10 at Em/D = 108. The breakdown of the fifty-power stress law at high stresses is not uncommon in other metals, and this phenomenon may result from nonequilibrium conditions in the material such as excess lattice vacancies produced by rapid straining.30 The mechanical strength of a polycrystalline metal is related to its microstructure. Attempts to establish the influence of grain size on the creep rate of metals and alloys have led to a wide variety of results. For example, the following effects have been observed: creep rate decreases as grain size increases;31&apos;32 creep rate decreases as grain size decreases;&apos;,33 creep rate is a minimum at some critical grain size and increases with either an increase or decrease in

Studies of the adsorption of dialkyldithiocarbamates at the surfaces of galena and sphalerite have shown that characteristic contact angles are obtained at galena surfaces in the 7-10 pH range, whereas lower angles are obtained at unactivated sphalerite surfaces even at pH 71 Further, the angles at sphalerite surfaces progressively decrease with increase in pH. However, when sphalerite is activated with cupric sulfate, characteristic contact angles are obtained at pH 7 and beyond. This shows that galena and sphalerite can be selectively floated with dithiocarbamate collectors at pH 7 and beyond. Experimental Materials Ore: The lead-zinc ore for the present study was obtained through the courtesy of the Geological Survey of India from Dariba, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. The average ore analyzed 15.5% lead, 11.6% zinc, 6.7% iron, 15.6% sulfur and 36.6% acid insolubles. The ore was crushed in a Denver laboratory rod mill and sieved in a Denver automatic sieve shaker to obtain a -200- to +250-mesh (Tyler standard) fraction. This particular size was chosen because it was conducive to good liberation of sulfide minerals, both from one another and from gangue minerals. Collectors: Dimethyl, diethyl, diisopropyl and diisobutyl dithiocarbamates were prepared and purified by the methods described by Klopping and Van der Kerk.2 A freshly prepared 0.03% dithiocarbamate solution in distilled water was used for flotation studies. Frother: A 0.03% solution of pine oil in ethyl alcohol was employed. Activator: 7.3 g of cupric sulfate pentahydrate were dissolved in 1 1 of water and used for the activation of sphalerite. Depressant: 16.0 g of zinc sulfate heptahydrate were dissolved in 1 1 of water and used for the depression of sphalerite.

A proposed technique for improving coal-mine roof stability by softening parts of coal pillars along the sides of entries developed from structural analysis is presented. This technique is based on the transference of the high stress concentration in the roof near the upper corners of a rectangular opening to the roof rock and coal over the solid away from the opening. This transferral is accomplished by softening parts of the coal pillars by drilling a series of parallel holes into the coal in the ribs and face of the entry prior to advance. The effectiveness of the pillar softening in terms of reducing the opening width (so that the stress in the roof near the corner is equivalent to that of a narrower opening) ranges from 3 to 5 ft for a 16-ft entry using a series of 4 to 5-ft-deep parallel drill holes of 3 to 6-in.-diam on a 1 to 2-ft spacing for a particular geology. Pillar softening should be highly effective in controlling roof where cutter-roof cave conditions exist, because this technique reduces the high stress concentration in the roof at the upper corners of the opening. It may also be effective for reducing tensile roof failure and coal rib sloughing for certain specific geological conditions. This technique appears to be a simple, effective, and practical method that can be used to supplement conventional roof support methods of roof bolting, timbering, roof truss, and other existing methods in underground coal mines. The authors consider the technique feasible and believe that it merits underground trials.

IT would be a difficult matter to trace from the beginning the very few improvements made in the burning of fuels prior to 1860. Doubtless the crossing of the sticks of wood in building a, wood fire early appealed to our savage ancestry as a means of expediting its effectiveness for their crude culinary purposes. Stones and andirons came later in assisting the admission of air to the under part of the fuel bed, while beacons and cressets utilized metal bars as supports for the same purpose. It is probable that Tubal Cain owed his success to the use of bellows making possible the use of mixed fuel and charge upon a hearth. With the development of working in east iron, grate bars cane in, and they are still with us doing duty in every household and almost every art where heat is a factor. Little was done beyond these crude methods prior to 1860. With the advancement of knowledge came the fuel-gas producer, a. natural child of the retorts employed in supplying illuminating gas. It is only within the last 15 years that the conclusion became general that complicated systems for saving heat would not remedy deficiencies in its primary development, and within that tine there has been great advancement in the means of producing initially fire of high efficiency, so that to clay we are moving rapidly toward loth high development and high absorption, with the resultant of high efficiencies. In studying the subject of the availability of pulverized coal as a fuel, it may occur to ask, why has this not come up earlier? This question would be naturally prompted by recalling the fact that Thomas Crompton&apos;s English patents upon his methods were issued to Min nearly 40 years ago. A conclusive answer to this, however, is that Crompton at that time had very crude facilities for raking what was at best a, very imperfect pulverization of the coal, and the expense of preparation was very great. IN 1940, when it appeared that the United States soon might be cut off from foreign sources of high-grade manganese ore, the Bureau of Mines began an extensive series of investigations on the production of ferrgrade products from low-grade domestic ores by ore-dressing, pyrometallurgical, and hydrometallurgical methods. Among the hydrometallurgical processes for oxide ores investigated was a sulphur dioxide process in which the manganese was recovered from solution by precipitation with lime;1 this process is essentially as follows: The ground ore is suspended in water and leached with SO2 gas to extract the manganese as manganese sulphate. Calcium chloride is then added to the slurry to precipitate calcium sulphate and form manganous chloride solution, and the resultant slurry is filtered to remove the calcium sulphate together with the in- soluble portion of the ore. Calcium hydroxide is added to the filtrate and the mixture is agitated with air to precipitate hydrated oxides of manganese and regenerate calcium chloride. The precipitate is calcined, and the calcium chloride is recycled. To determine manganese extraction, reagent consumption, grade of product, and similar data for this process, a laboratory investigation was started. Two minor modifications in the process were soon made: (I) the ore was suspended in calcium chloride solution instead of in water in order to extract the manganese and precipitate the calcium sulphate in one step, and (2) the agitation with air after the addition of slaked lime to the filtrate was omitted because manganese hydroxide is readily precipitated without air agitation and can be nodulized or sintered to a satisfactory product. When the process was carried through a series of cyclic tests, it was noted that the concentration of dithionate ion (which is one of the products of oxidation of SO2 by MnOz) in the cycled solution gradually increased; at the same time the chloride content of the solution gradually decreased, owing to soluble losses in the leach residue and in the precipitate. After a number of cycles, the calcium chloride became virtually completely replaced by calcium dithionate, the quantity of dithionate ion formed during the leach being more than enough to make up for the losses of dithionate in filtering. The calcium chloride process thus developed into a calcium dithionate process. Since the latter eliminated the need for make-up calcium chloride, and the dithionate solutions appeared much less corrosive than the chloride solutions, work on the calcium chloride process was dropped in favor of the calcium dithionate process.
