THE discussion at the annual meeting of the paper on "Devices for Detecting Dangerous Gases in Mine Air" (published in. MINING AND METAL-LURGY, February 1, 1927, p. 69) was prefaced by the following description of a new portable methane indi-cator, presented by D. C. Ashmead: Two comparatively recent disasters in Utah are directly responsible for the perfection of the new methane detector. The first of these occurred on May 1, 1900, when 200 work-men lost their lives. The second disaster did not occur for more than two decades, when, on March 8, 1924, at the Castle Gate Mine No. 2, 172 workmen were killed. A dis-sembled safety lamp was later found at the seat of the ex-plosion. This indicated, as a possible cause, that the safety lamp had gone out and the fire boss had tried to relight it. These two disasters brought, the mine operators of the State of Utah to the concentrated attempt to end the loss of life through mine explosions. The Governor of the State appointed a committee, known as the Utah Mine Op-erators Committee, to study the phases of the problem, and this Committee in turn enlisted scientists all over the country in cooperative research. One group, under the direction of E. K. Judd, of the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, of Long Island City, New York, concentrated its efforts on develop-ing a methane detector which would be completely ade-quate. This is now successful, since in laboratory as well as actual coal-mine tests the apparatus has instantaneously and accurately detected the presence of extremely small amounts of methane.

The plasticity of unalloyed P plutonium was studied by evaluating the strain-rate-hardening exponent, m, in the equation Values of m up to 0.33 and tensile elongations up to 680 pct were obtained for ß plutonium formed directly from the a phase. Casl bars that were cycled and tested had lower flow stresses and higher values for than uncycled bars , hut their total plastic elongations were not as great as expected because of premature failure at voids formed during cycling. Flow stresses were higher and m was lower (m = 0.15) for 9 plutonzutn formed from the y phase. ThE strain-rate-hardening exponent for plastic flow of p plutonium was determined as a function of strain rate, test temperature, and heat-treating history, and it was related to the rather large plastic elongation found previously for some plutonium tensile samples. Gardner and ~ann' obtained tensile elongations of up to 620 pct for P plutonium samples which had been completely transformed from the low-temperature a phase to the P phase before testing. Such a large percentage elongation is unusual for unalloyed metals or single-phase alloys.' The a phase is stable below approximately 112°C and (3 is stable between approximately 112" and 190"c.~ Both phases have mono-clinic structures. A temperature of 160°C is 0.58 of the effective absolute melting point, 475°C) of the p phase. The effective melting point is obtained by considering the enthalpy and entropy changes associated with the higher-temperature phase transformations and it is not the same as the experimental melting point of the highest-temperature allotrope of unalloyed plutonium. Nelson, Bowman, and Bierlein observed a striking difference between the ductility, as well as other mechanical properties, of p plutonium formed from the next higher-temperature phase (y) and the ductility of /3 plutonium formed from the a phase. The total elongation of /3 plutonium formed from the y phase was less than 5 pct. Earlier, the creep rate of 13 plutonium formed from the a phase was shown to be 200 to 500 times faster than the rate for 0 formed from y for the same test temperature and stress.

TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS for nothing at all except a sheepskin. That to me is the effect of the New York State law for registration of engineers and the same may be said of any of the state licensing laws. Of course, if one has to practice in more than one state, he must pay a more or less equal amount for every state he works in; and yet there has been little effective protest against these laws. It would seem that the spirit which animated the Boston Tea Party is non-existent amongst engineers. Undoubtedly a good many consider, through their failure to understand the law, that the matter does not affect them. In New York State it is provided that "any person practicing or offering to practice profes-sional engineering or land surveying . . . shall be licensed as hereinafter provided." To quote further from the law: "A person practices professional engi-neering . . . who holds himself out as able to do, or who does, the work that an engineer does . . . " The cunning of the wording of this article can only be appreciated by considering that anyone calling himself an engineer falls within the definition; its liberal inter-pretation (I have not quoted the whole of it) would embrace many who do not consider themselves engi-neers. The state authorities may not construe it to include such individuals; indeed, they may possibly consider it inexpedient to extend it to include engineers of subordinate grade, but the possibility is always there and, even though an engineer be of the grade of assis-tant, he may at any time be called upon to substitute for his principal in responsible charge of the work. It is therefore clear that anyone calling himself engineer and practicing engineering must, for his own protection, apply for registration or run the risk of violating the law. Now, what is the sense of all this? We have done very well without such restrictions on the means of gaining our livelihood. If one only stops to think, there is hardly a minute of his modern existence when he is not dependent for his safety on the engineering by engineers of yesterday or today. How often is one in jeopardy through failure of engineering works, work done under the supervision of those same engineers? If all of us had to wait for our ends by such means, our average life would probably be some thousands of years. Where, then, is the point to the object declared in all these laws that the need for licensing is "to safeguard life, health and property?" Bosh!

When we see the magnificent passenger-trains of from 8 to 12 coaches, drawn by locomotives weighing from 100 to 110 tons, at speeds of from 50 to 60 miles per hour between terminals, to make a schedule of 45 miles per hour, and freighttrains of from 50 to 75 cars of 60,000 pounds capacity, drawn by one locomotive, it is hard to realize that it lacks a few months of fifteen years since my pioneer 5-inch 80-pound rail for the United States was laid by the New York Central aid Hudson River Railroad Co., in July, 1884, on the Harlem line. Shorter passenger-trains, of from 4 to 5 coaches, are run much faster, notably the Empire State Express, the schedule of which for the 440 miles between New York and Buffalo requires 53.3 miles per hour, calling for a running-speed, for much of the time, of from 65 to 75 miles per hour, while higher speeds are very common. On other railroads laid with my 5 1/8-inch 80-pound rail, speeds of from 60 to 75 miles per hour obtain in daily practice. On many of the important railroads east of the Mississippi high speeds of from 60 to 70 miles per hour are part of the daily service. So many instances of speeds of 90, and even 100, miles per hour have been recorded that they must be considered as likely to occur on important lines, and provision must be made for them in the track. Solid mail-trains of from 6 to 8 cars are run from New York to Chicago, 1000 miles, in twenty-four hours; and, commeneing with the present year, shorter trains are running from Chicago to San Francisco, 2000 miles, in three and one-half days. TOTAL global war is making extraordinary demands on the oil industry. Huge quantities of 100-octane gasoline, extreme service lubes, toluene and other miscellaneous products are required. 100-octane gasoline is blended from isopentane, base stock, and alkylate. Isopentane is fractionated from natural or refinery gasoline; but since only limited quantities of base stock can be made in this way, catalytic cracking is rapidly becoming the major source of base stock. Alkylate, the most important component, is synthesized from isobutane and an olefin. Extraordinary demands are forcing the full utilization of all present sources and the development of new supplies of feed stocks. Fortunately, the United States finds itself with well-developed processes already available, and this is true of the manufacture of lubricating oil as well. Toluene is now being produced by new methods from special cuts fractionated from selected crudes or from catalytically processed naphthas. Designers of refinery equipment are modifying past practices to conserve every bit of material possible.

Some fifty years ago, iron-ore was discovered near the town of Sheldon, Franklin County, Vermont, in a vein out-cropping on a knoll near Black Creek, which empties into the Missisquoi River a couple of miles away. A short time after this discovery, the owners, Mr. TV. 0. Gadcomb and Hon. Lawrence Brainerd, both of St. Albans, commenced mining (mostly by open cut), and also erected a Catalan forge, from which iron blooms were produced, most of which were worked into bar-iron and used in the neighborhood of the forge, while some were shipped by Lake Champlain to Troy, Albany and New York. But by reason of the lack of any railroad connections, and an insufficient demand for the blooms, this forge was subsequently abandoned, and the material used in its construction removed to other places. Mr. Keith, of Sheldon, used for many years a mixture of this ore with bog-ore from Swanton, in a charcoal blast-furnace, the product of which he consumed partly in his own foundry, shipping, however, a considerable amount to Troy and New York. Accurate data as to this enterprise are not at hand. The same vein has since been traced for some 20 miles, and some prospecting has been done 011 its outcrops at Berkshire, Enosburg and a few miles east of St. Albans; but the vein being small, only a few car-loads of ore were taken out from these places. The commencement of the St. Albans Iron and Steel Works in 1872, and the erection in 1877 of a ten-ton Siemens open-hearth furnace for the manufacture of steel rails, opened a new use for this ore. For many years, geologists have inferred a connection between the evolution of the earth's crust and ore deposition, a connection coming under the heading of metallogeny. In recent years the concept of metallogeny has assumed major importance in the exploration planning of Russian geologists in their quest for new mineral sources. As defined by Radkevich, metallogeny is "the science which studies the laws governing the distribution of ore deposits in the earth's crust." However, since it can be argued that metallogeny does not contain enough certitude to be classified as a "science," it would be more appropriately defined as the study of metallogenic provinces, and metallogenic epochs.

F. C. HENDERSCHOTT,* New York, N. Y.-I am going to take, as the text of what I shall discuss, a portion of the second paragraph of Mr. Stanford's paper. It read as follows: "The most vital need of the management is for more brains. The logical course for an engineer ;in charge of an industrial organization is, therefore, to direct whatever forces may be at his command toward the development, training and guiding of-all the brains in his organization. This is easier said than done, for it involves the carrying on toward two objectives, the maximum of productive work and the development of the individuals, who perform it;" and the last sentence of the paper; "Industry has no greater asset than an intelligent workman." The United States of America, at the outbreak of the present war, had the best equipment of any nation in the world. That statement holds not only for our -shops and our transportation systems and our stores and our farms and our homes, but it holds generally.. There was no other nation in. the world that had so good equipment as the United States. There was no other nation in the world that could be called progressive that has such poorly trained workers as the United States. Even Norway, Denmark, Sweden and New Zealand ranked ahead of us. Now that is the, problem, generally speaking, and there was recognition of that fact, a growing recognition which-took form, and one of its forms was what we call the corporation school. Now obviously a corporation has no particular educational functions, but as is said in the closing sentence of Mr. Stanford's paper, or as is implied, an industrial institution is, after all, the reflection of the aggregate of the efficiency of the individuals who compose that organization. There is no way of getting away from that. If your individuals, from your president down, are efficient, if your individual has developed his brains, if he is a trained man, you have got an efficient organization, and if you haven't that condition, you have got weaknesses and your organization is no stronger than those weaknesses. I maintain that the same thing holds for a nation; .a nation is as efficient as the collective efficiency of the individuals who compose the nation, and no more so.

Reserves of Lake Superior Manganiferous Iron Ores Appendix-to paper by CARL ZAPFFE, presented at the Cleveland Meeting and issued, as Pamphlet No. 1664-C, with MINING AND METALLURGY, May, 1927. The author has made several test calculations on the basis of manganese units that are and may be involved. These are summarized here, as follows: On the basis of ore produced since 1902, the average annual requirement of manganese units would be 91,000 tons; on the basis of the production of the past 4 or 5 years, the requirement would be 145,000 tons; on the basis of the year 1925 only, the requirement would be 155,000 tons. Applying the percentage of increase for the next 20 years, as determined by the plat shown as Fig. 3, the total requirement for 20 years would be 3,254,000 to 3,572,000 tons, if one used either 145,000 tons or 155,000 tons as a starting point. We have the following interesting facts: (1) The Michigan ores contain only about one-half the manganese that the Cuyuna ore does; (2) the Cuyuna district now produces one-half the ore required; (3) the known tonnage of Cuyuna reserves is greater than the speculative reserve offered for Michigan; (4) at the present rate of production considered by tons, Michigan ores ought to be exhausted in 20 years or less while Cuyuna ores would last up to 44 years. We should now reduce the estimated reserves to a basis of manganese, units. Using the tonnages listed in Combinations 2, 3, 4 and 5, the reserves total 3,118,225 tons, 3,781,995 tons, 5,041,995 tons and 5,560,342 tons, respectively. Therefore, needing at the most 3,572,000 tons, as shown above, either Combination 3, 4 or 5 will not only suffice but will leave an excess-enough for 1 or 2 years for Combination 3, 9 or 10 years for Combination 4, and 12' to 13 years for Combination 5. This means that for Combination 5, without using tonnages obtained from beneficiating or from mixing poor ores, the reserves are ample for about 33 years.

As a result of the great demand for metallic aluminum and the scarcity of domestic bauxite, numerous processes have been proposed and developed to extract the oxide of this metal (Al2o3) from clays, shales, and other low-grade raw materials.1-4 An exploratory study was made to extract alumina with sulfuric acid from relatively impure coal-associated draw-slate and to establish an optimum calcination temperature for maximum recovery. Draw-slate is the term used to describe the hard, slaty material directly overlying many coal seams and may range from a few inches to a few feet in thickness. Alumina content of these draw-slates may range from as low as 15% to over 35%. Although the following results are limited in scope, some of the data should prove beneficial for further work. Coal-associated clay, shale, and gob heretofore have been considered nuisance products; any successful alumina extraction process would greatly enhance the worth of these almost limitless resources. This research demonstrated that an optimum calcination temperature for alumina extraction could be established for a coal-associated draw-slate and that this temperature was lower than those suggested in previous work with unspecified clay types. It should be noted that slightly higher acid concentrations and somewhat finer particle sizes were used in this series of tests as compared to previous work. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Essentially, alumina extraction proceeded in four steps: 1) grinding, 2) calcining, 3) acid leaching, and 4) precipitating of aluminum sulfate. An initial series of reference tests to determine the optimum temperature of solubility for alumina was run using relatively pure kaolin. Kaolin forming clays are hydrous aluminum silicates of the approximate composition 2H2O A12O3 2SiO and kaolinite is the mineral that predominates in most kaolins. 5 The kaolin was ground to -30 mesh and subsequently calcined at temperatures ranging from 100°C to 700°C. Each sample was calcined for 1 hr in a muffle furnace and in turn subjected to sulfuric-acid leaching (H2SO4, 9 molar) for a 2-hr period. THE year 1923 was one of great importance in northern Louisiana and southern Arkansas, so far as the' development and expansion of previously discovered oil and gas fields were concerned. However, the search for new fields failed to produce a single discovery that led to important development during the period; in this respect, the year was one of discouragement to the prospector. During the winter and spring months, an especially active "wildcat" campaign was in. progress in southern Arkansas, and a large number of tests were drilled in northern. Louisiana but this activity subsided during the summer and fall. By the close of the year, only routine drilling was in effect in the fields; and only two new areas-Cotton Valley, in Webster Parish, and an area in Union Parish, La.-were showing any important activity because of favorable oil showings. Further drilling is contemplated in both of these areas, and the present feeling is that one or the other may produce the next oilfield in this territory. Briefly, the development of the Smackover field was the overshadowing event of the year. In. southern Arkansas, important development also took place in the East El Dorado, Stephens, and Irma fields; but all of these were relatively small. In northern Louisiana, many new oil wells were drilled in the Bellevue field, and many new gas wells in the Monroe field. In the old Caddo field, a large number of the deep Woodbine wells were plugged back to the "chalk rock," where a high gravity oil is obtained. In the other fields, only a few small wells were drilled. Therefore, Arkansas, furnished the real development of the year in this area. The production for the year showed a material increase over that of 1922, due, chiefly, to Smackover, and practically altogether to the Arkansas fields. In Louisiana, every field, except Caddo, Bellevue, and Elm Grove, showed slight to marked declines; while in Arkansas, El Dorado was the only field that declined throughout the year.

THIS paper was prepared upon request as a contribution to a symposium covering the manufacture, properties, and uses of the important non-ferrous metals. In approaching a subject as broad as this, there is a natural desire to build up a comprehensive and finished production which shall constitute a dependable source of information on all questions properly belonging to this branch of metal technology. There are, however, a number of circumstances, apart from the mere routine of labor and thought involved, which operate rather effectively against the possibility of completing such an ambitious program at the present time. First of all, as far as any public record of results is concerned, the commercial rolling, drawing, and forming of zinc with relation to changes of structure and properties-and this we consider to constitute the elements of metal technology-might as well be an unpractised art. We have never seen a published photomicrograph showing the structural characteristics of either hard or soft sheet or strip, although the structure of castings has been frequently described, and other coarse-grained structures resulting from hard-hammering and annealing have been reproduced. Thus, an author in this field must proceed to his task without much assistance from the literature, and the outcome can represent only a personal estimate of principles, facts, or findings, and not a summary

Studies of roof and floor movement are of interest to those actively engaged in mining. This is especially true in the case of an entirely new area where there is no precedent for guidance. The potash deposit being mined is in the southeast corner of New Mexico, about 20 miles east of Carlsbad. The deposit was formed by the land-locked, shallow, Permian Sea that extended through parts of western Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, southeastern Colorado, and eastern New Mexico. The saline deposits vary from 500 to 4000 ft. thick. Neither of the companies operating in this area has delimited its commercial ore bodies. As all production so far has been from Federal and State leases, the Department of the Interior and the State of New Mexico have a direct interest in the development and extraction of these ore horizons. The ore is composed of an intimate mechanical mixture of sylvite (potassium chloride) and halite (sodium chloride). It lies generally in a horizontal bed varying from 5 to 12 ft, in thickness, and has a cover of approximately 1000 ft., consisting of about 500 ft. of salt beds and 500 ft. of sediments. The immediate mine roof for several feet is principally salt with some potash and clayey material. The next 500 ft. above, from the standpoint of structure, may be considered rock salt with a few inter-bedded potash members. The upper 500 ft. is of sedimentary (Permian and Triassic) origin and contains several water-bearing formations with flows varying from 10 to 500 gal. per minute. This water intensifies the interest in convergence problems as the ore and surrounding formations are water soluble. Potash salt (sylvite) and rock salt (halite) are plastic minerals. Plasticity is defined as a "property of solids by virtue of which they hold their shape permanently under the action of small shearing stresses but are readily deformed, worked, or molded under larger stresse."1

Finances. : Income continues to increase the total for the year 1935, being $141,754 compared with $134,967 in 1934, and $121,689 in 1933, which was the lowest reached during the depression. The principal increases were $2000 in Current Dues; $2400 in Dues from New Members; $2000 for Advertising in the monthly magazine MINING AND METAL¬LURGY; and $1600 in Sales of Authors' Reprints and TRANSACTIONS volumes. Income from Dues in Arrears was $1000 less as a consequence of the fact that arrearages had been largely reduced during 1934, so that there were fewer from which to draw.

The outstanding event of the year 1929 in the Appalachian area was the intensive drilling activity in the Bradford and Richburg pools of northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York State, particularly the former, in connection with the continued extension of the five-spot system of water-flooding. More new development work was undertaken and completed than during any previous year since reclamation methods were first applied. This was due in part to an excellent price for oil and in part to discovery of the fact that more intensive methods (five-spotting) yielded greater profit. While several oil wells of comparatively large initial production were completed, no new oil pools of significance were discovered in the Appalachian area during the year. A number of small gas pools were opened in areas already surrounded by producing wells and at least three others in areas located some distance from any producing pools. Petroleum Development According to statistics of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, 33,7,57,000 bbl. of petroleum were produced in the Appalachian field during 1929 as compared to 31,060,000 bbl. in 1928.' Of the total 1929 production, 23,391,618 bbl. consisted of Pennsylvania grade oil as compared to 21,096,710 bbl. in 1928. The 1929 Pennsylvania grade production represents an increase of 37.4 per cent. over that of 1924. This increase can be attributed largely to the rapid development of water-flooding in the Bradford and Richburg pools. The Bradford field of northwestern Pennsylvania and adjaccnt portions of New York State experienced the busiest year since the boom days of the early eighties. Wells completed during the year totaled 2679.2 In spite of the high prices asked for acreagc, which in some of the choicest territory has been as high as $6000 an acre, a considerable number of properties changed ownership during the year. There is at present a pronounced tendency to consolidate the great number of small individually operated properties into larger units.

THE notched-bar impact test has proved worth while in certain applications as a test for control of the quality or the heat- . treatment of steel. In view of the serious thought that even so simple a test as the tensile test, has evoked during the past years, it is not surprising that the notched- bar impact test should have inspired much experimental work. The correlation of the great number of data has not been successful, although steady progress has been made toward a better understanding of this test. Progress has been made, especially, in the isolation of the effects of the many variables that control the results. The stress system imposed on a specimen with a notch is so complicated and un- predictable that no simple evaluation of the test has been possible. Because of this uncertainty, many engineers hesitate to use the notched-bar impact test, and this attitude may well continue until a better understanding of the effects of the variables in the test are available. Without doubt, any additional data that may be presented should be accompanied by as complete a description of the details of test as possible, so that it may be added to the general fund of information that is to serve as the basis for the theory of the notched-bar impact test. The many factors that may control the test results have been pointed out repeatedly. The importance of the effect of the type and dimensions of the specimen has been recognized. Most of the work reported by American investigators has been limited to small- size (Charpy) specimens tested as a simple beam; two types of notches (Fig. I) have been commonly used. Considerable data have also been presented by many investigators using a small specimen tested as a cantilever beam; this commonly being called the Izod test. Here, however, a shear component of stress makes the stress system even mare complex than that present in the simple beam type of test, hence a critical analysis is difficult. Much work has also been reported by investigators using the tension type of specimen. A second variable that must be con- trolled is the testing temperature. An indication that the tests were performed at room temperature is not sufficient, since in many steels a variation of a few degrees in the actual testing temperature may be sufficient to give an entirely different range of results. Other factors. such as the com- position and condition of the material being tested and the speed of test, should also be considered. Many investigators have contributed data and theoretical discussions on the problems encountered in notched-bar test-

IN the past few years several papers have appeared dealing with different aspects of the oxidation of dilute alloys, especially with respect to the formation of internal oxides or subscales. Subscale has been defined1 as that layer or zone of oxide particles precipitated in a matrix of metallic metal in which the oxide particles are dispersed uniformly and occur by diffusion of the oxygen inward from the metal surface. Alloys composed of a solvent metal more noble than the alloying elements are subject to subscaling or internal oxidation. In these alloys the solute must be present in such quantities that if the alloy is exposed to an oxidizing atmosphere at elevated temperatures, the rate of diffusion of the oxygen into the metal will be greater than the rate of diffusion of the solute outward. There is a composition range of the iron-silicon system that falls into this classification. Knowledge of the nature and rates of oxidation of iron-silicon alloys is of great commercial importance, but very little information of this nature is available. Darken2 recently has made calculations to show the limits of concentration of silicon for which subscales are produced in iron-silicon alloys; however, the main thesis of his paper was to analyze and to explain the already existing data. The purpose of this paper is to present the effect of com position, temperature, time, and atmosphere on the type of scale-metal layer obtained and to give some qualitative indication of the effect of these variables on the rates of oxidation. Since this paper is a study of silicon steels that are available commercially, extremely low-silicon and high-silicon alloys are not included. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in the experiment were taken from heats of silicon steel that ranged in analysis from 0.70 to 5.8 per cent silicon. This composition range takes in most of the commercial silicon steels. In Table I are listed the compositions of alloys used. Other than iron and silicon, the alloys normally contained approximately the following impurities: carbon, 0.03 per cent; manganese, 0.07; phosphorus, 0.008; sulphur, 0.02; copper, 0.07; tin, 0.01, and from nil to a trace of chromium, nickel and copper. All of the alloys used were melted in open-hearth furnaces, except where otherwise noted, and were hot-rolled to 0.100-in. plate. Samples approximately 1/2 in. square were then cut from these materials. So that the surface conditions of the samples used for oxidation would be standardized, each sample was ground through 000 emery paper immediately before oxidation. Two different techniques were employed in carrying out the oxidizing treatments. One consisted simply of heating the samples with free access to air. ROTARY kilns, varying in construction, are used in a variety of processes. Products differ and operating conditions vary according to economic requirements. All of these variables influence the degree of instrumentation and type of control necessary or profitable to install. Products fired in rotary kilns are the results of combined temperature and time treatment and the interrelation of these two factors should be kept constantly in mind in the perusal of this paper. MEASUREMENTS OF KILN TEMPERATURE The securing of proper temperatures within the rotary kiln, either of the charge or of the kiln lining in the high fire zone, are basic objectives of kiln operation; therefore the measurement of these high-temperature conditions merits first consideration.. For these measurements, radiation pyrometers, properly designed and protected, have proved adequate, particularly where records or automatic control are desired, while optical pyrometers may serve as portable indicators. Light-sensitive devices or photoelectric cells in this service are capable of producing records as well as certain forms of automatic control. High-temperature measuring devices for rotary-kiln work should have the measuring unit protected from dust, as a continued accumulation of deposit would lower the readings. Fig. I shows a typical application of radiation equipment to a rotary kiln, mounted far enough away from the sighting hole through the kiln hood to be protected from puffs or stingouts and with a sighting tube having a series of settling chambers, to prevent dust from reaching the lens. Although dust conditions inside the kiln itself usually fluctuate considerably and have their effect upon the readings at that moment, such effects are not cumulative and show as a continuous fluctuation in the temperature indicated, provided the radiation unit and recorder are responsive to such slight and rapid temperature fluctuations. The ambient temperature to which a measuring unit is subjected fluctuates from possibly o° to over 200°F., therefore these changes should have no effect upon the final reading or upon the life of the measuring unit. A very narrow sighting angle is desirable, so that measurement of temperature may be made as far as possible into the high fire zone without. effect of the flame temperature. There should be some sighting means on the measuring unit, so that the proper field may be viewed. Measurement of wall temperature taken at a point where the charge has just left the wall is less affected by dusting conditions than when taken elsewhere.
