The plasticity of unalloyed P plutonium was studied by evaluating the strain-rate-hardening exponent, m, in the equation Values of m up to 0.33 and tensile elongations up to 680 pct were obtained for ß plutonium formed directly from the a phase. Casl bars that were cycled and tested had lower flow stresses and higher values for than uncycled bars , hut their total plastic elongations were not as great as expected because of premature failure at voids formed during cycling. Flow stresses were higher and m was lower (m = 0.15) for 9 plutonzutn formed from the y phase. ThE strain-rate-hardening exponent for plastic flow of p plutonium was determined as a function of strain rate, test temperature, and heat-treating history, and it was related to the rather large plastic elongation found previously for some plutonium tensile samples. Gardner and ~ann' obtained tensile elongations of up to 620 pct for P plutonium samples which had been completely transformed from the low-temperature a phase to the P phase before testing. Such a large percentage elongation is unusual for unalloyed metals or single-phase alloys.' The a phase is stable below approximately 112°C and (3 is stable between approximately 112" and 190"c.~ Both phases have mono-clinic structures. A temperature of 160°C is 0.58 of the effective absolute melting point, 475°C) of the p phase. The effective melting point is obtained by considering the enthalpy and entropy changes associated with the higher-temperature phase transformations and it is not the same as the experimental melting point of the highest-temperature allotrope of unalloyed plutonium. Nelson, Bowman, and Bierlein observed a striking difference between the ductility, as well as other mechanical properties, of p plutonium formed from the next higher-temperature phase (y) and the ductility of /3 plutonium formed from the a phase. The total elongation of /3 plutonium formed from the y phase was less than 5 pct. Earlier, the creep rate of 13 plutonium formed from the a phase was shown to be 200 to 500 times faster than the rate for 0 formed from y for the same test temperature and stress.

F. C. HENDERSCHOTT,* New York, N. Y.-I am going to take, as the text of what I shall discuss, a portion of the second paragraph of Mr. Stanford's paper. It read as follows: "The most vital need of the management is for more brains. The logical course for an engineer ;in charge of an industrial organization is, therefore, to direct whatever forces may be at his command toward the development, training and guiding of-all the brains in his organization. This is easier said than done, for it involves the carrying on toward two objectives, the maximum of productive work and the development of the individuals, who perform it;" and the last sentence of the paper; "Industry has no greater asset than an intelligent workman." The United States of America, at the outbreak of the present war, had the best equipment of any nation in the world. That statement holds not only for our -shops and our transportation systems and our stores and our farms and our homes, but it holds generally.. There was no other nation in. the world that had so good equipment as the United States. There was no other nation in the world that could be called progressive that has such poorly trained workers as the United States. Even Norway, Denmark, Sweden and New Zealand ranked ahead of us. Now that is the, problem, generally speaking, and there was recognition of that fact, a growing recognition which-took form, and one of its forms was what we call the corporation school. Now obviously a corporation has no particular educational functions, but as is said in the closing sentence of Mr. Stanford's paper, or as is implied, an industrial institution is, after all, the reflection of the aggregate of the efficiency of the individuals who compose that organization. There is no way of getting away from that. If your individuals, from your president down, are efficient, if your individual has developed his brains, if he is a trained man, you have got an efficient organization, and if you haven't that condition, you have got weaknesses and your organization is no stronger than those weaknesses. I maintain that the same thing holds for a nation; .a nation is as efficient as the collective efficiency of the individuals who compose the nation, and no more so.

Reserves of Lake Superior Manganiferous Iron Ores Appendix-to paper by CARL ZAPFFE, presented at the Cleveland Meeting and issued, as Pamphlet No. 1664-C, with MINING AND METALLURGY, May, 1927. The author has made several test calculations on the basis of manganese units that are and may be involved. These are summarized here, as follows: On the basis of ore produced since 1902, the average annual requirement of manganese units would be 91,000 tons; on the basis of the production of the past 4 or 5 years, the requirement would be 145,000 tons; on the basis of the year 1925 only, the requirement would be 155,000 tons. Applying the percentage of increase for the next 20 years, as determined by the plat shown as Fig. 3, the total requirement for 20 years would be 3,254,000 to 3,572,000 tons, if one used either 145,000 tons or 155,000 tons as a starting point. We have the following interesting facts: (1) The Michigan ores contain only about one-half the manganese that the Cuyuna ore does; (2) the Cuyuna district now produces one-half the ore required; (3) the known tonnage of Cuyuna reserves is greater than the speculative reserve offered for Michigan; (4) at the present rate of production considered by tons, Michigan ores ought to be exhausted in 20 years or less while Cuyuna ores would last up to 44 years. We should now reduce the estimated reserves to a basis of manganese, units. Using the tonnages listed in Combinations 2, 3, 4 and 5, the reserves total 3,118,225 tons, 3,781,995 tons, 5,041,995 tons and 5,560,342 tons, respectively. Therefore, needing at the most 3,572,000 tons, as shown above, either Combination 3, 4 or 5 will not only suffice but will leave an excess-enough for 1 or 2 years for Combination 3, 9 or 10 years for Combination 4, and 12' to 13 years for Combination 5. This means that for Combination 5, without using tonnages obtained from beneficiating or from mixing poor ores, the reserves are ample for about 33 years.

As a result of the great demand for metallic aluminum and the scarcity of domestic bauxite, numerous processes have been proposed and developed to extract the oxide of this metal (Al2o3) from clays, shales, and other low-grade raw materials.1-4 An exploratory study was made to extract alumina with sulfuric acid from relatively impure coal-associated draw-slate and to establish an optimum calcination temperature for maximum recovery. Draw-slate is the term used to describe the hard, slaty material directly overlying many coal seams and may range from a few inches to a few feet in thickness. Alumina content of these draw-slates may range from as low as 15% to over 35%. Although the following results are limited in scope, some of the data should prove beneficial for further work. Coal-associated clay, shale, and gob heretofore have been considered nuisance products; any successful alumina extraction process would greatly enhance the worth of these almost limitless resources. This research demonstrated that an optimum calcination temperature for alumina extraction could be established for a coal-associated draw-slate and that this temperature was lower than those suggested in previous work with unspecified clay types. It should be noted that slightly higher acid concentrations and somewhat finer particle sizes were used in this series of tests as compared to previous work. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Essentially, alumina extraction proceeded in four steps: 1) grinding, 2) calcining, 3) acid leaching, and 4) precipitating of aluminum sulfate. An initial series of reference tests to determine the optimum temperature of solubility for alumina was run using relatively pure kaolin. Kaolin forming clays are hydrous aluminum silicates of the approximate composition 2H2O A12O3 2SiO and kaolinite is the mineral that predominates in most kaolins. 5 The kaolin was ground to -30 mesh and subsequently calcined at temperatures ranging from 100°C to 700°C. Each sample was calcined for 1 hr in a muffle furnace and in turn subjected to sulfuric-acid leaching (H2SO4, 9 molar) for a 2-hr period. Finances. : Income continues to increase the total for the year 1935, being $141,754 compared with $134,967 in 1934, and $121,689 in 1933, which was the lowest reached during the depression. The principal increases were $2000 in Current Dues; $2400 in Dues from New Members; $2000 for Advertising in the monthly magazine MINING AND METAL¬LURGY; and $1600 in Sales of Authors' Reprints and TRANSACTIONS volumes. Income from Dues in Arrears was $1000 less as a consequence of the fact that arrearages had been largely reduced during 1934, so that there were fewer from which to draw.

Confirmation of the relationship noted above was provided by fitting experimental stress-strain data5 for 304 stainless steel (total strain from 0.072 to 1.15) at room temperature at a true total strain rate of 4 x 10-3 sec-1 to Eqs. [I] and [3]. In this study nonlinear regression analyses were used to evaluate the equation constants. The results of this evaluation are presented in Table I. When these constants are used in Eqs. [I] and [3] the curves obtained are coincident. It will also be noted that the value of n is equal to YE,, the value of a is equal to so, and the value of b is equal to (s8 - so)/Ec. These equalities are illustrated in Table I where the Voce constants in parentheses were calculated from a, b, and n values. Excellent agreement is seen to exist. It is concluded, therefore, that the Voce equation is, indeed, identical to the linear expression involving generalized strain. In applying the generalized strain concept to stress-strain data, it has been noted3 that data within what was termed the transition region (first few points in the plastic flow region) must be excluded from the analysis in order to obtain the linearity in Eq. [3]. A similar exclusion applies in the use of the Voce equation since an expression which would describe the strain-hardening region would usually be found to be not too effective in the elastic-plastic fillet2 which connects the elastic line to the strain-hardening region. These considerations further substantiate that Eqs. [I] and [3] do indeed describe identical behavior. Note added in proof. Since this manuscript was submitted for publication, correspondence with Professor S. R. Davies, University of Edinburgh, (of Ref. 3) indicated that his associates have also confirmed the identity between the Voce equation and the generalized strain concept. It is sometimes desirable to obtain a small grain size in super-purity metals. Unfortunately, the absence of impurities, the low recrystallization temperatures, and the low activation energies for boundary motion result in rapid growth of relatively few grains when conventional recrystallization practices are used. For example, Arajs et al.1 were unable to obtain a mean grain diameter less than about 0.4 mm in iron containing 38 at. ppm of impurity. The <1 at. ppm purity range in many modern superpurity metals results in yet larger limiting grain sizes. It is the purpose of this communication to describe a technique by which mean grain diameters as small as 30 µ have been produced in aluminum having an impurity content < 0.5 at. ppm. The technique should be applicable to superpurity metals other than aluminum and has potential applications to grain refinement of commercial alloys. The necessary and sufficient requirements for production of a small grain size are as follows: a) a large number of potential nucleating sites must be created randomly within the cold worked material, b) sufficient thermal energy must be provided at a rate that will simultaneously activate a large fraction of the potential nuclei, and c) the grain growth must be stopped shortly after grain impingement.&apos; A high density of potential grain nuclei may be cre-

During the second year of America&apos;s active ia in the war the inain objectives of the petroleum-refining industry were again to provide the four most important product needs for war: 100-octane aviation gasoline, toluene for T.N.T. production, high-quality lubricating oils for the needs of aviation and the armed forces, and petroleum chemicals for synthetic rubber manufacture. All other materials supplied by the petroleum industry took an inferior priority ranking, depending on the degree of essentiality. To accomplish the above objectives the industry initiated and carried on a building program during 1942 and 1943 which will put those two years down in petroleum-refining history as the greatest construction years of all time, a record which will hold for decades to come. Led by an estimated total of $ 900,000,000 going into 100-octane and contributory plant investment, it is easy to picture a total of two billion dollars and more going into additional refining-industry plant investment during 1942 and 1943, most of it privately paid for, but a substantial part covered by R.F.C. Government money financing. Some of the new plants will not be completed until 1944, but a large proportion of the program was finished and put into operation, adding substantially to the output of the four principal products during 1943- lne most important and spectacuiar activity of the refining industry is of course the 100-octane gasoline program necessitated by the fact that nearly 90 per cent of the requirements of the United Nations is being furnished by the United States. Recent P.A.W. figures mention $goo,-ooo,ooo as the cost of the construction looking to increasing the output of this all-important munition. Thirty-four major plants have been completed, 11 of them during the last quarter of the year. Thirty-eight more will be completed and put into operation during the first four or five months of 1944. Twenty-two additional plants authorized during 1943 are already well under way and scheduled for production late in 1944. Early in 1942 the aim was to treble the capacity for making 100-octane gasoline then existing; later, plans were to make it five times as great, to match the increased warplane building program; and toward the end of the year the sights had been set at a still higher but unannounced target, representing six to seven times the early 1942 figure. Comparative figures issued at the end of 1943 enable one to guess a program by the middle of 1944 of eight to nine times the former production, with an ultimate production in 1944 of eleven or more times the early 1942 output. Dilute alloys of silver and of thallium in tin have been solidijzed unidirectionally under controlled conditions, to study the segregation associated with a cellular interface under conditions where both thermal and solute convection are present. Autoradiography and radioactive tracer counting techniques were combined with electron-probe microanalysis to study both macro- and microsegregation. It was found that, for concentrations giving only small amounts of constitutional supercooling, cell formation had little effect on the macroscopic distribution of solute along the specimen. At higher concentrations the effective distribution coefficient was higher than that expected for a smooth interface. Node spacing was independent of initial solute content at lower concentrations, becoming greater as keff increased. Silver content at the segregation nodes of silver in tin alloys was independent of initial concentration and considerably in excess of the eutectic composition. SINCE the investigation of cell formation at advancing solid-liquid interfaces by Rutter and Chalmers,&apos; a large volume of work has been dedicated to the determination of solidification conditions under which a planar interface will break down into cellular form. Early experiments were explained satisfactorily by the concept of constitutional supercooling,2 but, due to poor measurement of temperature gradients in the liquid, lack of accurate data on liquid diffusion and equilibrium distribution coefficients, and uncertainty about the effects of thermal and solute convection, these experiments cannot be used as proof for the theory. More recent work, however, has shown that under conditions where convection is eliminated or can be ignored good correlation is observed.3,4 Investigations into segregation at cell caps5 and at cell nodes6-&apos;&apos; have been made, but no measurements appear to have been done on the overall, macroscopic segregation down a unidirectionally solidified rod of material which has solidified with a cellular substructure. This has practical importance in casting, where regions of material with cellular substructure are often encountered, and also in zone refining where the thermal conditions necessary for a planar interface are unattainable. Further, as will be shown, the macroscopic segregation can give information on the following question. Granted that a cellular solid-liquid interface develops from a planar one when the conditions for constitutional supercooling are exceeded, how much supercooling is present after the cells have formed? EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS Specimen Preparation. Specimens 25 cm long with a square cross section 0.6 by 0.6 cm were grown in graphite boats by solidification from one end. Alloy compositions are given in Table I. Two specimens of each composition were grown. The tin was 5-9 grade and the silver and thallium both 4-9 grade. Ag110 and Tl204 were used as tracers. Each composition had the same quantity of tracer so that auto radiographs of specimens containing different concentrations of the same element could be easily compared. Thermocouples inserted through the lid of the boat into a dummy specimen showed that, over the first 10 cm of growth, thermal conditions were quite steady, with a rate of interface advance of 5.8 cm per hr and a temperature gradient in the melt ahead of the interface of 3.0°C per cm. The specimens were seeded from tin crystals of a common orientation to eliminate orientation effects. Dilution of the specimen by seed material was minimized by the provision of a narrow neck between specimen and seed crystal. Macrosegregation. After growth, the specimens were sectioned with a spark cutter. The rods of silver alloy were cut into 1-cm lengths and analyzed for Ag110 using a y -ray counter with fixed geometry. The specimens containing thallium were cut into 2-cm lengths and analyzed for T1 204 by taking 13 counts from each end of the cut lengths through an aperture in lead sheet approximately 0.4 cm square. The results are summarized in Figs. 1 and 2. To find the effective distribution coefficient for the silver in tin alloys under smooth interface conditions, the region of substructure at the bottom surface of one of the 10 ppm specimens, see Fig. 3, was removed by spark machining before counting. Autoradiography. For both alloy systems the samples were polished on sections taken alternately parallel and perpendicular to the growth direction, and autoradiographed by placing the polished surfaces in contact with Kodak "Process Ortho" film. Figs. 3 and 4 show the structures revealed. The alloy containing 10 ppm Ag showed substructure only after a few centimeters of growth, and then substructure was limited to a narrow layer at the base. The "speckled" substructure reported previously in this system4 is here clearly seen to be an intermediate stage between planar and cellular interface conditions. Chemical mining may be defined as the use of chemicals in extracting metal values from in situ broken or unbroken ores within a mine. The present means for the generation and regeneration of sulfuric acid or sulfuric-ferric sulfate solutions are inadequate for most applications. This report describes a pressure oxidation process for the generation and regeneration of these solutions from pyrites and spent iron sulfate leach liquors. While recent mining developments such as solution injection, caving, and conventional and nuclear blasting, have provided new and better means for the per-colation of leach solutions through rock masses, little has been done to reduce cost and improve the quality of the leach solutions that are required. A leach solution for chemical mining should meet certain requirements. It should be 1) inexpensive on either a small or large tonnage basis, 2) capable of selectively leaching the desired ore minerals contained in a particular ore, 3) of the proper strength or quality to do the job of leaching in an underground environment and 4) amendable to simple and inexpensive metal recovery steps. It is also important that the capital investment be low for the solution generation and; or regeneration plant.

Three magnesium alloys were processed in various ways to exhibit a wide variation in the ratios of yield strength and tensile strength in the rolling direction compared to the cross-rolling direction. Basal-plane pole figures were prepared from several specimens. A fair correlation was observed between the property ratios and the ratio of percent of poles oriented in the cross-direction quadrants compared to the percent oriented in the rolling-direction quadrants of the pole figures. THE modes by which magnesium crystals deform are such as to lead to marked preferred orientations in all forms of wrought products. The effect of the active modes at room temperature, coupled with these orientations, is often to produce a lower compressive yield stress compared to the tensile yield stress. The phenomenon is due to easy twinning in compression, and has been well-related to the preferred orientations as described by basal-plane pole figures of the hcp magnesium single crystal. The literature contains some information on the variation with test direction of the tensile properties of sheet, but no quantitative relationship to the observed pole figures has been established. These effects have been reviewed in the few com- prehensive treatises in English which have been written on magnesium technology and metallurgy.1°3 Roberts presents several pole figures, but no tensile-property data in the plane of the sheet. Raynor has no pole figures, but quotes Frommer&apos;s4 results. The information in Beck&apos;s compendium more or less parallels the results of Jones and powell.5 In both a Mg + 1.5 Mn alloy and a Mg + 4.6 A1 alloy, cold rolling was found not to change the general situation of higher properties in the cross-rolling direction,* than in the rolling direction. Thomas&apos;6 X-ray studies of Jones and Powell&apos;s specimens did not permit correlation of properties and preferred orientation. Ansel and Betterton7 report tensile and compressive properties on three other alloys as a function of degree of cold rolling, plus a recrystallizing anneal. As rolled, there was a change in anisotropy with degree of reduction, but all alloys were reasonably isotropic in tension when annealed. X-ray diffraction photograms illustrated the kinds of orientations present, but were not correlated with the properties. Bakarian8 has described a method of determining quantitatively a preferred orientation, and illustrated the method by applying it to pure magnesium and two of its alloys. This method was used in the present work as a basis for correlating the strength properties with the texture.

tested without knowing anything of their chemical composition. I had these pieces separately placed upon 10-inch bearings under a 7-gross ton lianlrner, a piece of 2½-inch round iron laid upon them as a fuller, and the hammer allotved to fall from 20 inches above the fuller, which, according to Haswell, gave a ldow of 67.75 gross tons. The pieces were then turned orcr, the fuller placed upon the convex surface, and the harnnler allowed to fall from 13 inches above the fuller, giving a blow of 58.46 gross tons. You will see that the rails do aot show ally bigrls of ruptnre, and their color at the points of torture prove them to have been absolutely cold when the test was made. I thirk these rails ought to be reasonably safe in the track. As you see by this piece of the head of one of these rails, I had it plarred, and then some teeth cut in it by a cold clrisel, and one-half of them pounded down with a hammer. The teeth of my rack did not break off. The analyses of these rails substquently made are: I. 11. Carbon,... 0.110 0.880 Silicon,..0.050 0.058 Phosphorus ,..0.086 0.082 Manganese,.. 0.042 0 840 In conclusion, I will say that Dr. Dudley&apos;s paper as a contribu tion to our knowledge of steel rails is valuable and interesting, but I protest against his conclusions king reoeived as manufacturing or comtnercial axioms. From its being presented in the form-of a report to the leading railroad of the country from one of its trusted officers, as well as from the tone of the concluding deductions, it is liable to be so received by railroad men. If any railroad com pany desires rails made under either of Dr. Dudley&apos;s formulas, and are willing to pay a price large enough to cover the loss in making them, dl and good; but so long as the rail makers are compelled to gwrrantee the wear of their rails for a given number of years, justice reqnires that. the composition of the steel from which these rails are made should be left to them. To know the rate of decline of oil wells is very important, yet ordinarily we are prevented from getting this rate because the oil from several wells is put into one or a few tanks as soon as the wells have been connected to the power. The object of doing this is economy of tanks, pipes, labor and accounting. FIG. 1. But we are making a great sacrifice for this small economy. The advantages of the individual records are that we would know better: 1. When the well has ceased to be profitable. 2. When a well has gotten into bad condition. 3. The real record of the yield per acre and the rate of decline of the wells. The lease total is too mixed as to age of the wells for existing records to have much significance. To obtain such individual well records and more accurate logs are the great desiderata of satisfactory management of oil properties. 4. Which wells show the slowest decline-information which is valuable in locating new wells or purchasing adjoining leases.

When we see the magnificent passenger-trains of from 8 to 12 coaches, drawn by locomotives weighing from 100 to 110 tons, at speeds of from 50 to 60 miles per hour between terminals, to make a schedule of 45 miles per hour, and freighttrains of from 50 to 75 cars of 60,000 pounds capacity, drawn by one locomotive, it is hard to realize that it lacks a few months of fifteen years since my pioneer 5-inch 80-pound rail for the United States was laid by the New York Central aid Hudson River Railroad Co., in July, 1884, on the Harlem line. Shorter passenger-trains, of from 4 to 5 coaches, are run much faster, notably the Empire State Express, the schedule of which for the 440 miles between New York and Buffalo requires 53.3 miles per hour, calling for a running-speed, for much of the time, of from 65 to 75 miles per hour, while higher speeds are very common. On other railroads laid with my 5 1/8-inch 80-pound rail, speeds of from 60 to 75 miles per hour obtain in daily practice. On many of the important railroads east of the Mississippi high speeds of from 60 to 70 miles per hour are part of the daily service. So many instances of speeds of 90, and even 100, miles per hour have been recorded that they must be considered as likely to occur on important lines, and provision must be made for them in the track. Solid mail-trains of from 6 to 8 cars are run from New York to Chicago, 1000 miles, in twenty-four hours; and, commeneing with the present year, shorter trains are running from Chicago to San Francisco, 2000 miles, in three and one-half days. THE discussion at the annual meeting of the paper on "Devices for Detecting Dangerous Gases in Mine Air" (published in. MINING AND METAL-LURGY, February 1, 1927, p. 69) was prefaced by the following description of a new portable methane indi-cator, presented by D. C. Ashmead: Two comparatively recent disasters in Utah are directly responsible for the perfection of the new methane detector. The first of these occurred on May 1, 1900, when 200 work-men lost their lives. The second disaster did not occur for more than two decades, when, on March 8, 1924, at the Castle Gate Mine No. 2, 172 workmen were killed. A dis-sembled safety lamp was later found at the seat of the ex-plosion. This indicated, as a possible cause, that the safety lamp had gone out and the fire boss had tried to relight it. These two disasters brought, the mine operators of the State of Utah to the concentrated attempt to end the loss of life through mine explosions. The Governor of the State appointed a committee, known as the Utah Mine Op-erators Committee, to study the phases of the problem, and this Committee in turn enlisted scientists all over the country in cooperative research. One group, under the direction of E. K. Judd, of the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, of Long Island City, New York, concentrated its efforts on develop-ing a methane detector which would be completely ade-quate. This is now successful, since in laboratory as well as actual coal-mine tests the apparatus has instantaneously and accurately detected the presence of extremely small amounts of methane.

Some fifty years ago, iron-ore was discovered near the town of Sheldon, Franklin County, Vermont, in a vein out-cropping on a knoll near Black Creek, which empties into the Missisquoi River a couple of miles away. A short time after this discovery, the owners, Mr. TV. 0. Gadcomb and Hon. Lawrence Brainerd, both of St. Albans, commenced mining (mostly by open cut), and also erected a Catalan forge, from which iron blooms were produced, most of which were worked into bar-iron and used in the neighborhood of the forge, while some were shipped by Lake Champlain to Troy, Albany and New York. But by reason of the lack of any railroad connections, and an insufficient demand for the blooms, this forge was subsequently abandoned, and the material used in its construction removed to other places. Mr. Keith, of Sheldon, used for many years a mixture of this ore with bog-ore from Swanton, in a charcoal blast-furnace, the product of which he consumed partly in his own foundry, shipping, however, a considerable amount to Troy and New York. Accurate data as to this enterprise are not at hand. The same vein has since been traced for some 20 miles, and some prospecting has been done 011 its outcrops at Berkshire, Enosburg and a few miles east of St. Albans; but the vein being small, only a few car-loads of ore were taken out from these places. The commencement of the St. Albans Iron and Steel Works in 1872, and the erection in 1877 of a ten-ton Siemens open-hearth furnace for the manufacture of steel rails, opened a new use for this ore.
