An Untapped Energy Resource As much as 20 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day are flared from remote oil fields for lack of a commercially viable means of capturing, transporting, and marketing such gas. The magnitude of these gas flares can be put into perspective from an early satellite photograph (Fig. 1) which shows lights from the major cities of Russia and Eastern Europe dwarfed by the natural gas being flared in the Persian Gulf. Together, these wasted resources contain the energy equivalent of about one-half of the gasoline consumption in the United States today (Fig. 2). Additional trillions of cubic feet of natural gas are "shut-in" because of no economically viable means of commercial recovery. Methanol and liquified natural gas (LNG) are the only two practical fuel products which can be produced economically from these gas supplies. Many of these gas supplies are less than 500 million cubic feet of gas per day, making an LNG facility uneconomic. In contrast, barge-mounted methanol plants can economically convert billions of cubic feet of gas per day into safe, clean-burning methanol. The methanol approach offers the only economical route to transform vast, known reserves of natural gas into a highly versatile primary liquid fuel. Methanol Barges: An Innovative Solution The barges will be towed to suitable offshore and upriver locations such as Alaska, South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific Islands, as well as fields in the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean Sea. At the offshore production site, a barge will be anchored by a single point mooring buoy that will also serve as an entry point for natural gas feedstock and an offloading point for methanol (Fig. 3). At some sites the barge would be beached. Each barge will produce methanol and store it in internal tanks with a capacity of 18 million gallons. The methanol will be offloaded into conventional tankers and safely transported directly to market. Unlike LNG, methanol requires neither specially built carriers nor specially built receiving terminals. Once a particular gas field has been exhausted, the barge will be towed to another location to continue production. Each barge will measure 320 by 500 ft, approximately the size of four football fields, and will have the capacity to produce 1 million gallons or 2800 metric tons of methanol per day, from approximately 100 million cubic feet of natural gas per day (Fig. 4). The barges will use the highly successful "low- pressure" design developed by the Lurgi Company of Germany, a process proven in land-based methanol plants throughout the world during the last ten years. The decision to use Lurgi technology for "sea-trans- portable" methanol plants was based on the higher efficiency and greater operability of the technology compared to other commercially proven processes. The conversion plant will be designed to accept a wide variety of feed gas compositions, and will produce chemical-grade methanol for the broadest market base (Fig. 5). To minimize costs and construction time, the barge-mounted plants will be built in the high technology environment of a domestic or foreign shipyard. Selection of the construction site for each barge will be dictated by the location of the production site and by the relative construction costs. A number of shipyards have the capacity to build several barges per year. The detailed marine engineering to integrate the design of the processing plant with the floating platform can be performed by numerous major engineering companies around the world. Production Economics The barge-mounted plant concept not only assures large volumes of methanol, but it also keeps the overall production cost low by minimizing construction cost and providing access to low cost natural gas feedstock with no alternative or a negative value. Together, these advantages make the barge-mounted methanol plants economical today. The cost structure of a new barge-mounted methanol plant differs from that of existing methanol producers around the world (Fig. 6). For example, if a U.S. Gulf Coast producer is paying $4.70/MMBtu in 1985 for natural gas, the barge plant could afford to pay about $1.6O/MMBtu for gas and be able to deliver methanol to the Gulf Coast at the same price. At some future date such as 1990, a gas cost of $6.70/MMBtu for a domestic producer would have cost parity with about $3.60/MMBtu gas cost for the barge plant. In many foreign markets, feedstocks other than natural gas are used for methanol production (Fig. 7). For example, most of Japan's capacity is based on LNG while Western Europe uses residual oil or naptha. Because these feedstocks are substantially more ex- pensive than natural gas used by U.S. producers, the barge plants will compete even more favorably in these foreign markets. As crude oil prices rise, the value of methanol in each of these markets will increase. However, the hierarchy of methanol values in these markets should remain unchanged. Furthermore, the cost advantage for using methanol in these markets will improve as world energy costs increase since the value of remote gas should not escalate significantly.

The need for a practical method of deciding upon new alloy steel analyses to widen its markets was the problem facing the Chrome Steel Works at the beginning of 1927. In addition to determining the physical properties of the alloys under consideration, it was necessary to test their value in service. Small melts of steel in a crucible, from which test specimens could be made, were insufficient to determine more than physical properties, therefore actual castings and ingots had to be made before the products could be placed in service. Furthermore, to save further experimental work, it was desirable that these heats should be made on a "pilot" basis; that is, actually duplicating regular open-hearth furnace practice. Therefore a one-ton (2000-lb.) acid open-hearth furnace was built. Furnace Design There are no special features in the design of this furnace. Standard acid open-hearth practice is followed, with the reproportioning of the dimensions necessitated by its small size; notably, a considerably increased length in proportion to width in order to get proper flame propagation. After the first heat was made it was found that the check-ers were insufficient. The checker chambers were increased in size and the checker openings were made much smaller. The furnace was started late in March, 1927, and made 65 heats. Experimental work was then stopped unti1, the data accumulated could be worked up and summarized. The run was resumed in November and the furnace is still operating, having made at this writing 60 additional heats. For the last series of runs, there was some rebuilding of both the furnace itself and the checkers. Slag pockets were added. Fig. 1 shows details of construction; Fig. 2, the general appearance. All designing was done by the operating and engineering staff. Construction materials were those available around the plant. The reversing valve is a standard butterfly type taken from an old furnace. The slag pockets and checkers are cleaned by digging down to arched openings which have been bricked up.

Admiralty nickel is a new corrosion-resisting and heat-resisting white metal alloy composed of 70 per cent. copper, 29 per cent. nickel and 1 per cent. tin. It has been given the trade name "Adnic." In 1924, Wm. B. Price' described this alloy and its successful use as a diaphragm metal. The physical properties of Adnic at ordinary and elevated temperatures were given in Mining & Metallury.~ A patent3 was granted on Adnic, April 28, 1925. Work was first started on this alloy during December, 1921. An investigation of the patent situation in this country and abroad, and also a search of the literature, did not reveal any work on the ternary diagram, copper-nickel-tin; and the only wrought copper-nickel-tin alloy found was that known as "Newloy," composed of copper, 64 per cent.; nickel, 35 per cent.; tin, 1 per cent. This was being manufactured and sold by Wm. Gallimorr & Sons, Ltd., Sheffield, England, for unplated spoon and fork stock, and first came to our attention in January, 1922. The preliminary work in connection with the development of Adnic was started by casting four binary copper-nickel alloys of the compositions shown in Table 1. Various a~ilounts of tin were added to each of these mixtures, to produce the series of ternary copper-nickel-tin alloys also given in Table 1. A 200-gm. sample of each of these was cast by iiielting in a clay graphite crucible and allowing the melt to slowly cool with the furnace. A longitudinal section from each of thcsc castings was polished and etched for examination. DESPITE the fact that a combination of metals-aluminum-zinc-tin, and sometimes aluminum-zinc-cadmium-is extensively used for aluminum solders, as well as for die-castings, the constitution of these alloys has not yet been made clear. I. BINARY SYSTEMS The system aluminum-zinc is the basis of the ternary alloys under consideration. Their composition was made sufficiently clear by the investigations of Rosenhain and Archbutt,1 Bauer and Vogel,2 Sander and Meissner,3 Hanson and Gayler4 and Isihara.5 Only the temperature of decomposition of the crystals 0 seems still to be doubtful, whether it is considered as a compound of Al2Zn3 (according to Bauer and Vogel) or as an intermediate phase of variant composition (according to Hanson and Gayler). This temperature is given by most of the authors as in the neighborhood of 256° C., only Isihara giving 280° C. As its accurate determination is of special importance in the study of the ternary alloys under consideration it was experimentally controlled in the following manner: An alloy corresponding in composition to the formula Al2Zn3 was made, in which the temperature effect was found to be the greatest. This was drilled and a silver-constantan thermoelement inserted into the cavity so as to be in direct contact with the alloy. The whole was then very slowly heated and the heating and cooling curves determined. The transition temperature from the heating curve was found to be 281° C., whereas from the cooling curve it was 252° C.

The field-emission microscope has been adapted for the study of microcrack growth during the early stages of fracture in metal wires. Cracks as small as 6 1 in length can be detected and their growth can be followed to specimen failure. The system is quite useful in searching for microcracks since only sharp-edged surface defects will emit electrons under the experimental conditions. THE conditions leading to brittle fracture were discussed a number of years ago by Griffith1 and the term Griffith Cracks is often used for the small surface cracks which are responsible for brittle fracture. Griffith's theory has been modified by stroh2 and more recent results on metals are discussed by Allen,3 pp. 123-40. At present the phenomenon is not completely understood but there is general agreement that at least in certain materials the sequence leading to brittle fracture involves several stages. The initial microcracks are present because of cooling or working stresses, Hahn et al.,3 p. 95. When a stress is applied to the specimen the cracks grow slowly until the release of stored elastic energy is large enough to accelerate the crack and provide the necessary surface energy for crack growth. At this point the growth rate appears to increase rapidly to some new equilibrium velocity, and failure occurs. Since the microcracks are usually about the size of a single metallic grain (Ref. 3, p. 99) it is not easy to find them and it is very difficult to follow their growth under stress. This paper will report on the use of a cylindrical field-emission microscope for observation of the formation and growth of microcracks. I) THE FIELD-EMISSION MICROSCOPE The field-emission microscope (FEM) has a high magnification and resolution and is almost uniquely suited for observations of microcracks. Since the FEM is relatively new as a metallurgical instrument, a short description will be given here. Normally metals at room temperature do not emit electrons; however in the presence of a strong electric-field gradient, electrons can tunnel out through the reduced potential barrier. Since this tunneling is a function of the local field gradient and the local work function, the emitted electrons can be used to produce a highly magnified image of the surface by allowing them to strike a phosphor screen. Because the electron emission is dependent upon the local field gradient, smooth surfaces emit few electrons except at very high fields. On the other hand cracks, extrusions, or other surface defects, having sharp edges, emit strongly since the field gradient is very high in the vicinity of these defects. This indicates that the FEM should be most useful for detection of microcracks on otherwise smooth surfaces. A field-emission microscope was first used by Muller4 in 1936 for observation of metal surfaces, and recent reviews have been given by Muller5 and Gomer.6 The instrument has been used for metallurgical studies in the area of surface diffusion,= recrystallization,7 and grain growth 8 (Ref. 8 is directed specifically at metallurgists). In the work of Muller4,5 and Gomer 6 the specimen was in the form of a sharp metal point at the center of a phosphor-coated glais sphere. The impact of the emitted electrons on the phosphor produced a highly magnified image of the specimens. Such a system is not practical for applying a controlled stress to the specimen and a cylindrical geometry has been used in this investigation. This allowed the application of a controlled tensile stress to the wire specimen. Normally a cylindrical FEM geometry produces magnification only in the radial direction. This is the case because a smooth wire at the center of a cylinder produces a purely radial electrical field. However, if there is a break in the smooth surface of the inner cylinder, the field near the break becomes three-dimensional and the area of the break is highly magnified. The reason for this is clear if it is recalled that the field gradient depends on the relative radii of the inner and outer cylinders; if a crack forms, its edge radii are of atomic dimensions and a very high field gradient is formed near these crack edges. Since the electrons receive most of their acceleration near the crack edge and are always traveling perpendicular to the field lines, they tend to spread out and produce the magnified image observed in the cylindrical field-emission microscope. 11) BRITTLE-FRACTURE STUDIES A) Experimental Apparatus. The production of oil in Mexico during 1945 was 43,402,852 bbl., or a daily average of 118,912 bbl. In March 1938 most of the oil properties were taken over by the Mexican Government and since then have been operated by Petroleos Mexicanos, an agency of the Government. The variations in the production during the last 8 years have been due to- fluctuations in the export market demand for Mexican oil rather than to the productive capacity of the fields. (communication to the Secretary†):—I observed (Trans., xxxvii., 585) that to obtain tenders from several American mills, the foreign engineer should modify his maximum phosphorus to 0.10 per cent., not as Mr. E. Windsor Richards quotes me, that no American rail-maker can produce rails under 0.10 per cent. of phosphorus. Mr. Richards claims that no English engineer would agree to accept 0.10 per cent. of phosphorus on any terms whatever. Mr. Webster writes that only after an engineer has .been convinced that rails can be made in America equal in every respect to those he is getting abroad, should he be asked to modify ally conditions in his specifications. I know it to be a fact that during recent years in many cases, as, for instance, When delivery could be secured more promptly in the United States than in Europe, the consulting engineers of several British and colonial railroads have frequently agreed to modify their phosphorus requirement to a maximum of 0.10 per cent., and the rails delivered' under these modified specifications have, under like conditions, given just as satisfactory service and proved to be no more brittle than similar sections of 0.07 per cent. phosphorus rails, rolled in England under the same specification except without modification as to phosphorus. The name for this new method of mining is derived from a composition of Horizontal, Radial, Diamond, and the drilling is from raises. This method, worked out at Copper Mountain, B.C., is believed to be distinct in many features from other known methods. Geology The ore deposits of copper Mountain are related to the copper Mountain stock, which is an ideal example of the magmatic in in that it grades from a basic gabbro at the border to an almost pure orthoclase-pegmatite core. The "contact" ore bodies lie along the contact of the gabbro and an older complex of volcanies and sediment termed the "Wolfe Creek" formation. These older rocks, collectively referred to as greenstone, had been fractured prior to the intrusion of the stock and were highly metamorphosed during the intrusion. The "outlying" ore bodies are somewhat different in character, though a similar structural pattern prevails. It is believed that a deep-seated magma of which the Copper Mountain stock is a part has given off solutions that caused a partial graniti-zation of some of the volcanies. Mining problems are caused further by the presence of a series of soft barren dikes intersecting a great many of the ore bodies, which are about 30 ft. wide, strike north-south, and dip at a high angle to the east; and are further increased by the presence of four major faults, with a great many minor faults running at acute angles from them. Fault zones average 8 ft. in width, and consist of gouge and breccia. They strike northeast and dip steeply to the northwest. The faults cut through the ore zones and the dikes, and continue on into the gabbro. The general mine structure with two types of Ore bodies, bounded by weak walls and intersected by several series of soft barren dikes and major faults, indicated that a method of mining should be devised that would remove the ore at low cost with the least disturbance of the waste walls and dikes. , Theoretical Estimate of Stoping with the Diamond Drill After consideration of various methods, the most suitable one appeared to be horizontal drilling to break the ore in a manner similar to shrinkage stoping Drilling vertical holes or rings from a bench and breaking to an open slot was eliminated because the weak walls of ore, dike or waste would not permit this type of opening. It was then decided to drill either horizontal radial holes from a raise or parallel holes from a slot cut across the ore body. GEOCHEMICAL prospecting extends the age-old method of searching out lodes with a gold pan and rationalizes the prospector's hunch that certain plants are associated with ore. It uses sensitive but cheap and rapid analytical methods to find the diagnostic chemical variations related to hidden mineral deposits. Exploration geologists can gain tremendous assistance from this new tool, although its optimum use is not simple. To bring out the geochemical pattern that reveals the presence of a hidden ore deposit with a minimum number of samples requires a combination of shrewdness, chemical knowledge, and exploration geology. The use of sensitive analytical methods for prospecting had its start in the 1930's in northern Europe, where Scandinavian and Russian geologists had some success in these early efforts. Very little geochemical prospecting was carried on in the United States at this time, and no sustained interest was manifest until the close of World War 11, when geochemical investigations were started by the Mineral Deposits Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey. The purpose of these investigations was to apply geochemical principles and techniques to surface exploration for mineral deposits. Both the research on analytical methods and the routine trace analyses for field investigations were at first conducted by a single group, but it later became apparent that the trace analyses could be done by men of less experience than that required for successful research on methods. For the past several years there have been two groups of chemists, and although their functions overlap, three of the chemists are chiefly concerned with research, while four to six other men make the trace analyses for field projects. The chemical investigations, as well as the field projects of the Geochemical Exploration Section, concern only those phases of the subject that are appropriate to a government organization; every effort is made to help private industry, but not to compete with it, in finding orebodies. The chief aim of the Section, therefore, is to develop new analytical techniques and publish the results promptly, to carry out field investigations of the fundamental principles of geochemical dispersion, and to field test promising- techniques under controlled conditions. Some routine geochemical exploration work is carried on in connection with DMEA loans, and in district studies where the project chief wishes geochemical information on certain areas for his report. It should be emphasized, however, that geologists of the Geochemical Exploration Section are primarily concerned with fundamental principles underlying the distribution, migration, and concentration of elements in the earth's crust. To facilitate the use of geochemical methods the USGS has published much information on its methods of analysis and has provided opportunities from time to time for qualified professional personnel to study these methods, to work in the USGS laboratory, or to attend demonstrations of the analytical techniques at the Denver Federal Center. Typical of the research carried on are the problems now being investigated: 1) Development of rapid and sensitive analytical methods suitable to the determination of traces of metals and other minor elements in various materials, such as rock, soils, plants, and water. At the present time attention is being concentrated on U, Bi, Cr, and Hg, and satisfactory rapid trace analytical methods are virtually perfected for U and Bi. Good methods are also available for: Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Co, As, Sb, W, Mo, Ag, Nb, Ge, V, Ti, Fe, Mn, S, and P. 2) The relation of geochemical anomalies in plant materials to the geochemical distribution of elements in soils surrounding the plant. 3) A study of the dispersion halos in transported sedimentary cover such as glacial drift and alluvium over known orebodies. 4) A study of the behavior of ore metals in the weathering cycle. 5) A study of the behavior of the ore metals during magmatic differentiation. This requires a study of the distribution of minor metals in fresh igneous rocks and their component minerals in a well established differentiation series and in adjacent country rock. 6) A study of the dispersion of metals in primary halos in the wall rock surrounding orebodies. 7) Regional and local studies of the metal content of surface and groundwater in mineralized and barren areas. Many field projects of the Mineral Deposits Branch also require the services of USGS chemists during their investigation of the geochemical environment of ore deposits. From the work that has been done certain general principles have emerged. Concentrations of an element that are above the general or background value of barren material are called positive geochemical anomalies or simply an anomaly, whereas values less than background are called negative anomalies. The anomalies most commonly investigated in geochemical prospecting are those formed at the earth's surface by agents of weathering, erosion, or surficial transportation, but more and more attention is being given to primary anomalies found

A study of the effect of small amounts of interstitial impurities on recovery and re crystallization in high-purity iron (99.995 pct) has been undertaken. This paper gives results on the effect of carbon, introduced in small-dosed amounts @om 0.0005 to 0.0086 wt pct) by heating iron specimens of high purity m a static atmosphere of CO + ,. The materials prepared in this way, cold-worked 80 pct and subjected to a series of isochronal and isothermal annealings, were submitted to examinations by X-rays, micrographs, and hardness tests. It was observed that effect of carbon is remarkable in the sense of blocking recovery of mechanical properties up to the temperature at which re crystallization begins. On the contrary, carbon has a negligible effect on primary re crystallization temperature, when compared with the known effect of substitutional impurities. This is in agreement with the high mobility of interstitials. In effect, only a slight decrease, -20 pct, of the grain-boundary motion rate was noted, due to the interaction between the grain boundary and the carbon atoms. On the other hand, in the samples in which the carbon content is above the solubility limit at the temperature at which re crystallization occurs, a slight increase of nucleation frequency is noted due to the presence of precipitated carbides. ThE effect of purity on recovery and recrystalli-zation phenomena has been known for a long time; however, recently, new attention has been given to the problem since new methods for obtaining metals with extremely low impurity contents have become available. Most of this research work essentially concerns the effects of impurities which cause precipitates or give rise to substitutional solid solutions. The works of Bolling and winegard1 and Aust and utter' on lead, and Vandermeer and orddon' on aluminum, 01sen4 on nickel, and Abrahamson and Blakeney on iron should in particular be referred to. On the effect of this type of impurities a quantitative theory has been formulated by Detert and Lucke6 and has lately been discussed critically by Cahn7 and Gordon and vandermeer.' Interstitial solid solutions in iron have not as yet been studied. As the study of the effect of interstitials is of great interest both from a theoretical and practical standpoint, it was deemed useful to examine the effects of carbon, nitrogen, and boron on recovery and primary recrystallization of iron. There already is some work by Chaudron et al.,1-" on the effect of interstitials on iron; their work, however, mainly concerns secondary recrystallization. The present paper refers in particular to the effect of carbon. EXPERIMENTAL PART Preparation of Materials. The pure iron used for this research was obtained from FeCIS recrystal-lized and purified by extraction with isopropylic ether. From the ferric chloride purified in this manner, hydroxide was precipitated with a solution of very pure ammonia, and, by calcination in pure sintered alumina crucibles, oxide was obtained. Reduction of the oxide to iron sponge was performed in sintered alumina tubes with very pure hydrogen at 650°C; at the end of the operation temperature was increased to 900°C. Specimens for the experiments were obtained by sintering the sponge at 1480°C in pure Hz after a pre sinter ing treatment at 900° C. It is important to note that the treatment at 1480°C in Ha produces a further purification from more volatile elements such as zinc, cadmium, arsenic, lead, and tin. Details on the preparation and characteristics of this type of very pure iron are given in a previous work.'' Only the complete analysis performed by neutron-activation methodsz3 is given here, Table I. Some of the specimens prepared in this way were carburized in the 0 region with very low amounts of carbon by treating them at 700°C in a static atmosphere of Ha containing a definite amount of CO. NO ONE could fail to be gratified to receive so profound an approbation in his calling from the members of one's own profession. To have re-ceived this distinction from men, many of whom have been professional associates and friends over more than a quarter of a century, warrants a pride. and satisfac-tion that could come from no other source. It has often been said that men are really known only to their brothers in labor and in profession. The long friendship I have received from Mr. Saunders and the distinguished service that he has contributed to the mining industry add to my appre-ciation of this event. Mr. Kelley's remarks bring my mind easily to the beginning of that period of great advance in the engineering, profession of forty years ago. Three great forces contributed to the development of the profession. The first was the era of intense development of minerals, metallurgy; and transportation in our great West. It greatly stimulated invention; it made a demand for training and skill on the part of our engineers. The pressure of national development advanced our American practice beyond the rest of the world. Moreover, the skill of our engineers of that period owes a great debt to American educators. The leaders of our universities were the first of all the educators of the world to recognize that upon them rested the responsibility to provide fundamental train-ing in, the application of science to engineering under the broadening influence and cultivation of university life. They were the first to realize that engineering must be transformed into a profession in the highest sense, not only in the training and character but that the essential quality of a profession is the instillation of ethics. That implies not alone the job but the responsibility of the community for the job. Our uni-versities poured into our development a great stream of men with this background and training. A third distinction that grew in American engineering was the transformation from solely a technical profession to a profession of administrators-the business manager with technical training.

The objective of the research is to determine whether solid-solution strengthening effects observed in dilute solutions of silver can be accounted for by the influence of the solute addition on the dislocation structure oj- the crystals. The additions of both tin and indium produced only small changes in the dislocation densities and arrangements in silver crystals. However, as found previously, small solute additions have large effects on the tensile properties; the inj-luence of the tin and indium additions on the temperature dependence of the flow stress and the easy-glide range is especially strong; It is concluded that the indirect strengthening effect of the solute due to variations in the dislocation density as proposed by Seeger is of minor importance and that solute atom-dislocation interactions are responsible for the observed strengthenirzg effects. The experimental results were combined with those of Rogausch to test the concenlvatiorz dependence of solute strengthening. Both the first and one-half power dependences of the critical resoleed shear stress on concentratiorz fail in very dilute solutions. THE objective of the research is to determine whether solid-solution strengthening effects observed in dilute solutions of silver can be accounted for, at least in part, by the influence of the solute addition on the dislocation structure of the crystals. It is recognized that the addition of solute atoms may influence the strength properties of a metal through both "direct" and "indirect" effects. The former refer to the strengthening mechanisms that result from the interaction of solute atoms with dislocations; in the latter case, the strengthening effects arise as a result of solute's influence on quantities such as dislocation density, dislocation arrangement, stacking-fault energy, diffusivities, the elastic constants, and so forth. It is clear that the correct interpretation of solid-solution strengthening phenomena cannot be given until the importance of indirect strengthening effects is properly evaluated. In the particular case of close-packed metal crystals, Seeger showed that solute strengthening effects in dilute solutions of copper and silver might be accounted for by an increase in dislocation density due to the addition of the solute. Seeger's argument was that the strengthening effects extrapolated from more concentrated solutions indicate that small concentrations of impurities raise the critical resolved shear stress much more than is predicted by a concentration-independent dislocation density. The above idea was a very reasonable one. The dislocation theories of work hardening of Taylor,2 Cot-trell, 3 Mott, 4 and seeger5 had already associated the increased flow stresses with increased dislocation densities in deformed metals; investigations of the dislocation structure of metal crystals had provided a logical basis for expecting an increased dislocation density in crystals containing impurities (see for example, Ref. 6). The numbers involved seem reasonable, too. It can be expected that the flow stress of the crystal would increase as the one-half power of the dislocation density.' Solute additions of 1 at. pct to metal crystals result in strength increases by factors in the range of three to ten. If one assumes that the strengths of the pure metal crystals are determined by their dislocation densities, then dislocation-density increases of one to two orders of magnitude as a result of solute addition would be required to account for the observed strengthening—not an unreasonable expectation. In addition to the effect of the solute addition on dislocation density, one might also anticipate important strengthening contributions to result from the solute's influence on the dislocation arrangement. Parker and washburns have reviewed a number of experimental evidences which show important strengthening effects due to the presence of subboundaries. Further, lattice strains due to impurity segregation would be expected to influence the distribution as well as the dislocation density of the as-grown crystal. As pointed out in the reviews of Chalmers,6 Elbaum,9 and winegard,lo micro segregation of impurities occurs at all interfaces of crystals in cellular growth; the impurity gradient results in lattice strains which can be reduced with the presence of dislocation arrays in the region of the impurity gradient. Hence, one would expect the presence of a solute to favor the formation of dislocation subgrain structures and that the subgrains would have an important influence on the strength of the crystal. The experimental observations that concern the possibility of an important strengthening contribution through the influence of the solute on the dislocation density or arrangement are not in agreement. Haasen has reviewed the observations of Meakin and Wils-dorf,12 Howie,13 and Bocek 36 and concluded that the solute's influence on dislocation density is not sufficient to account for strengthening effects in concentrated solutions but might, as seegerl suggested, make an important contribution in very dilute solutions. On the other hand, Hendrickson and Fine 14 concluded that changes in the dislocation density and dislocation width accounted for the solid-solution strengthening effects observed in silver-based aluminum solid solutions. Steps were taken for a permanent organization of the scientific and technical employees of the Government at their mass meeting on May 8. This was the result of an informal meeting on Apr. 23 of thirty representative Government scientists and technical men who organized the preliminary committee and called the mass meeting. This subject has been widely discussed during the last year and was brought acutely to the fore by the work of the Joint Congressional Reclassification Commission, because that Commission has stated that it wished to deal with employees only through organizations. Rodney H. True of the Department of Agriculture was Acting Chairman. He pointed out that the principal advantages that were expected to be derived from such an organization were: (1) Improvement of conditions and facilities for more effective scientific and technical work; (2) adequate presentation of the needs. and results of such work to the public and to legislative and administrative officers; (3) -greater freedom in both official and non-official activities; (4) just and reasonable salaries based on service performed and the economic and social conditions which prevail; (5) greater public recognition of the aims and purposes of research; (6) advancement of science and technology as an essential element of national life. Three plans of organization were offered to the meeting, which covered the fundamental principles which could be utilized by these Government employees. The first plan would have permitted the new organization to work only through existing scientific organizations. This is the plan that scientific and technical Government employees in England have adopted and an outline of the English plan was read to the meeting.

The Fifth Annual National Exposition of Chemical Industries will be held in Chicago at the Coliseum and First Regiment Armory during the week of Sept. 22. It was decided to hold the exposition in Chicago, this year, for two reasons: The U. S. Army commandeered the Grand Central Palace Exposition Building in New York, immediately on the close of the last exposition and converted it into a receiving hospital, the use for which is now, happily, nearly ceased; and it was thought that the Exposition would succeed in bringing about a greater development of chemical industries in the Chicago district and the adjoining states. THE form of dip chart here presented for the use of the profession was devised by the author when he was confronted with a particularly heavy job of geological section making and. did not have any of the usual tables or charts at hand. This was at the property of the Teziutlan Copper Co. in Puebla, Mexico, where the orebodies are much faulted and lie conformably with a slightly inclined and. much folded schist. Because of the low dip and the folding of the orebodies, the engineering, and geological data respecting them were best represented on vertical cross-sections quite closely spaced. A less finished form of the chart was published in the Mining & Scientific Press of Aug. 6, 1921, with an explanation of its use. I have checked the new drawing for accuracy against the calculated table given, and constructed an explanatory diagram beneath. As some geologists are accustomed to using the table, I have included it, since no advantage is obtained by mere interpolations from the chart to get the required angle, except as it gives a mental picture of this angle. The chart gives a more rapid and much easier solution when cases multiply so that it becomes desirable to eliminate the tedious manipulations of a separate protractor. In fact, using the parallel ruler as des-cribed, it is not even necessary to make note of the angle sought. It is brought out graphically, leaving the mind free to note the correlations. The chart itself may be made more convenient by reproduction on celluloid with a slot running on the zero line of the protractor.

The paragraphs quoted, regarding Mr. Hoover's appointment as chairman of the newly organized food board of the United States, are taken from the editorial page, of the New York Times for April 13: ?The country is fortunate in commanding the services of Herbert C. Hoover as Chairman of the newly established Food Board. This is n, problem of first importance. Few realize the extent to which American food stuffs will enter into the decision of the war, and it is doubtful if it has occurred to many minds as yet that we shall have to deny ourselves what we have regarded as necessaries in order to keep our European allies supplied. " Mr. Hoover is one of the leading mining engineers of the country. At the outbreak of the war he put his private affairs aside to become the head of the American Commission for Relief in Belgium. He has had an experience that perhaps no other man has ever had, covering the raising of money and the purchase and distribution of supplies on a large scale; He has been brought into close relations with the neutrals and the belligerents on both sides. By them all he is recognized is one of the best executives brought to the fore by the mar. Mr. Hoover is in a position now to place abilities and experience at the service of his country. He will come back with comparative data that will enable him to measure resources and deficiencies accurately. This appointment gives renewed assurance of our Government's grasp of the problems of war and its resolve to apply, business principles to their solution."

The effect of 1ow-temperature stabilization anneals on the structure of the 0 phase Au-Cd alloys and on the diffusionless transformations observed in these alloys was examined by X-yay diffraction techniques. A phase separation in the ß-phase region was proposed to account for the experimenta1 results. The effects of quenching from elevated temperatures on the transformation behavior of these alloys were shown to be consistent with the proposed mechanism. IT has been shown that the high-temperature ß phase (CsCl structure) of the Au-Cd alloy system transforms to a phase having an orthorhombic (D2) ß&apos; structurel1-3 for compositions near 47.5 at. pct Cd and a tetragonal (4/m, m, m) ß" structure* in the vicinity of 50.0 at. pct Cd. Both transformations are diffusionless, crystallographically reversible, and occur on cooling at about 60° and 30°C respectively. The temperature interval from the beginning to the end of the transformation is of the order of 5°C in each case. Although the transformations are normally athermal, some of them have been reported to occur isothermally.= wechsler6,7 has shown that the effects of quenching a 49.0 at. pct Cd alloy from elevated temperatures are consistent with the retention of a nonequilibrium number of lattice vacancies. Annealing of these quench effects results in a broadening of the X-ray reflections.8 After a suitable quench, the 47.5 at. pct Cd alloy transforms to a phase having not the p&apos; orthorhombic structure but another structure which has properties similar to that of the ß" tetragonal structure.5.9 This change in the type of transformation has also been obtained after long anneals in the ß-phase region at about 70oC10 The present investigation was primarily concerned with the structural changes accompanying the above transformation phenomena. The change in transformation product and accompanying physical changes during an anneal in the ß phase have been termed stabilization effects. Experimental Procedure —The results reported in this investigation were obtained with the use of a Norelco diffractometer fitted with a temperature-controlled cryostat. The specimen temperature was controlled to better than ± 0.l°C during the measurements. CrKa radiation monochromated electronically with the use of a scintillation counter and pulse height analyzer was utilized. Specimens containing 47.5 and 50.0 at. pct Cd were prepared by sintering filings obtained from homogenized ingots of the proper alloy composition. (Gold of 99.999 pct purity and cadmium of 99.98 pct purity were used). All heat treatments were carried out with the specimens capsulated in vacuum ( < 10 % mm Hg) or in a He-H gas mixture. The quenching technique used in these experiments was to drop the pyrex capsule which contained the specimen from the annealing furnace into water, the temperature of which was controlled. The pyrex capsule shattered on contacting the water resulting in a relatively rapid quench. After the heat treatment, the specimens were mounted in the diffractometer and were left undisturbed in the diffractometer specimen holder during each sequence of measurements. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Low-Temperature Annealing—The transformations which were considered "normal" for these alloys were those obtained athermally during furnace cooling at approximately 50°C per hr after an elevated temperature anneal. Under these experimental conditions, the specimens were observed to transform to phases having structures whose diffraction patterns could be indexed as the ß&apos; orthorhombic structure for the 47.5 at. pct Cd and as the 0" tetragonal structure for the 50.0 at. pct Cd alloys. The transformation temperatures on cooling were approximately 60" and 30°C, respectively. Under the "normal" conditions both transformations were observed to go to completion, i.e., the entire volume of the ß phase was transformed to the product phase. In some specimens an extremely weak ß 110 reflection was observed at 20°C indicating that a small amount of retained ß was present. The effect of low-temperature annealing on the nature of the diffusionless transformations was examined for the 47.5 and 50.0 at, pct Cd alloy. The specimens were annealed in evacuated capsules at temperatures in the vicinity of 600°C (as specified in Table I) for 24 hr and were then cooled to 100°C at a rate of 50°C per hr. The specimens were then removed from the capsules and mounted in the diffractometer without allowing the specimen temperature to drop below 80°C. Annealing at the low temperatures was accomplished in the diffractometer by means of the cryostat which was mounted around the specimen. During the low-temperature anneals the lattice parameter, integral breadth of the reflections, and ratios of the integrated intensities of the fundamental and super lattice reflections for the 0 cubic phase were periodically determined. After annealing for the required time, the specimens were slowly cooled in the diffractometer and the diffraction patterns were recorded as a function of temperature. The specimens were cooled until the phase transformations were completed, following which the specimens were heated and diffraction

In May 1957 a diamond drill hole intersected 40 ft of magnetite and chalcopyrite assaying 2.55% copper and 51.6% iron on the claims of Craigmont Mines Ltd. near Merritt, southern British Columbia. The subsequent drilling indicated the presence of a multi-million ton orebody averaging over 2% copper and 18% iron, the latter present for the most part as magnetite and specular hematite in approximately equal proportions. This orebody, although under shallow cover at its eastern extremity, did not come to the surface and the early drilling was done on the basis of strong coinciding magnetic and geochemical anomalies. After 4 ½ years of intensive exploration and development the property was put into production in September 1961. The new ultramodern concentrator has a design capacity of 4000 tpd but is consistently treating well over this amount. Production is currently coming from that portion of the deposit which is amenable to open-pit mining methods. By mid-1958 information regarding the importance of the Craigmont find became fairly wide- spread, and exploration in the Merritt area was greatly intensified. Numerous magnetic and geochemical anomalies have been tested by drilling with notable lack of success. Detailed geological studies of the deposit and of the area have been made by Government agencies and by private companies and such studies are continuing. Many types of geophysical methods have been employed over the Craigmont deposit in an effort to develop knowledge which would assist in the search for similar mineral concentrations in the environment in which it occurs. This paper will discuss the results of the various geophysical surveys in relation to geological conditions and ore outlines insofar as they are now known.
