The recent discoveries of important new gold-districts in limestone, granite, sandstone and porphyry have awakened the more intelligent class of prospectors to a realization of the fact that ally rock may be gold-bearing; that from the appearance of a rock it is impossible to judge whether it carries gold or not; and that gold-ores may occur in any geological formation. As a rule, the professional prospector limits his search to ores and conditions with which he is more or less familiar, and to formations which he regards as favorable to the occurrence of such ores. Hence it often happens that while the very thing he is searching for is in plain sight, he fails to recognize it, and some other individual, possibly less intelligent but more lucky, stumbles blindly upon it. Beginning with the discovery of the California placers by the finding of gold in the tail-race of Sutter's saw-mill—a tale so often told that nearly all have read it in some form—and following the discovery of district after district down to the present time, one is forcibly impressed by the fact that many of the important districts have been discovered by accident; that many such discoveries have been made by unskilled or inexperienced prospectors, and some by persons having no knowledge whatever of prospecting. Thus, the recent Klondike discoveries are said to have been made by a poor salmon-fisherman, who, with his Indian wife, was hunting, not for gold, but for good fishing-grounds; the Comstock lode is said to have been accidentally discovered, and the Ragged Top district in the Black Hills and the Pearce mine in Arizona* are recent notable instances of the same kind.

Maintaining smooth haulage roads is a key to significant cost savings at Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Bing- ham Canyon copper mine, located near Salt Lake City, Utah. The truck operations section of the mine moves an estimated 300,000 tpd of waste plus some ore to maintain a balanced production cycle. A three-year truck replacement program has produced a dramatic new look in both size and capacity of the truck fleet. Currently there are 95 haulage trucks in the Bingham fleet with capacities up to 150 t. The trend towards the larger haulage units places greater importance on overall truck availability. The impact of a 150-t truck being out of service is far more critical than with the former 65 or 85-t units.

Nearly all of the present schemes for treating complex (i. e. lead-silver-zinc-copper) ores are based on the idea that lead holds, and will hold for some time, the strongest economic place from the viewpoint of supply and demand of all the non-ferrous metals. Copper, it is thought, will come back to its own when European affairs are stabilized, although at that time competition from Chile, Peru, and Katanga, in particular, will be more severe than in pre-war days. The future for silver and for zinc is uncertain. New uses are developing for zinc, and the market has remained better than many expected, but the stabilization of world markets will bring in foreign competition instead of relief. The cost of producing zinc from simple zinc ores, by the retort process, will, from the nature of the labor required and the increasing cost of fuel, increase steadily. As a result, the small producers of purely zinc ores around Joplin are shutting down their mines, even with a good market price for zinc; on the other hand, the producer of lead from complex ores, in the Rocky Mountain states, is confident of a profit from the sale of his lead, and is seeking means to make the zinc in his ore pay some part of the cost of treatment. However, the tonnage costs for mining and ore dressing are much higher in the Rocky Mountain states, as may be seen by comparing tax-return statements from the various states. Even before the recent drop in the price of silver, many mines were operating on a very slender margin of profit; labor and supplies cost more. Mining at greater depth has shown most orebodies to grow increasingly more complex, so that improvements in mining and ore-dressing practice have not been sufficient to compensate for the additional expense involved in beneficiating these ores. A large proportion of the work performed in wet-crushing silver mills is devoted to the handling and re-handling of pulp between the battery and the pans. There seems to be no generally applicable substitute for the settling-tanks, and in the present system of constructing mills the tanks involve an amount of labor which may be regarded as disproportionate and unnecessary, in view of the automatic improvements which have been introduced in other directions. This diffculty has been met, however, by Boss's continuous process, in which the pulp flows directly from the mortars to the first of a series of constantly working overflow-pans. This method has been adopted at the Noonday mill, Bodie, California; the Harshaw, Arizona; the Sierra Grande, New Mexico ; and the Prietas, Sonora. The continuous process, while giving excellent results with special ores, and under peculiar local conditions (such as a deficiency in water supply), is not, I believe, claimed to be available for all raw-amalgamating mills, notwithstanding its well-merited popularity for certain work. Some trouble has been experienced from the tendency to concentration in the pans, though this can be avoided by skilful manipulation. It has also the disadvantage inherent in combinations of distinct operations ; it requires a very nice adjustment of the water supply to obtain full battery efficiency without running the pans too thin, though the latter defect is partially compensated for by the gradual thickening of the pulp as it proceeds through the series of pans. The objection is similar to that which holds in a parallel duplex process, that of combining roasting and smelting in a single furnace, where each operation is injuriously affected by the necessity of fitting it in with another and entirely different one.

THE TRANSACTIONS of the Institute for the early years display but Little interest in physical metallurgy-indeed, it is striking how thoroughly process metallurgy absorbed attention until quite recent years. The first volume carries no article that can be strictly described as physical metallurgy, unless one on the rolling and hammering of ingots be doubtfully so described. Nor does the second volume contribute more the interest then was in mining, and in production methods, both ferrous and nonferrous, with much attention to the new methods of making steel. The third volume records papers on: the condition of carbon in gray and white iron, a paper devoted to chemical rather than microscopic analysis; the annealing of spiegeleisen; phosphorus and carbon in iron and steel, similarly chemical. Much attention was given, and continued to be given for years, to the manufacture and behavior of rails. The question of the nature of steel appeared early (Vol. 11)-What is Steel, by A. L. Holley-where arguments on nomenclature were already active; and Holley also bemoans, in modern spirit, the Inadequate Union of Engineering Science and Art; Pearse wrote on cast iron for guns (reflecting again the ironic beneficence of war in metallurgy), and said that Captain Walbach was the first to insist on chemical analysis of gun irons; he quotes Major Wade's study of comparative hardness, using penetration hardness measurements (Brinell was to come later), and quotes the important Reports on the Strength and Other Properties of Metals for Cannon, by H. C. Baird, Philadelphia, 1855, in which the advanced state of tensile testing at the time is shown. Theoretical considerations by one of the authors have ledl to the prediction that the dynamic internal friction of annealed metals has a broad maximum at a certain grain size. This prediction they have verified2 for alpha brass. In the present paper the theory is extended to include the precise manner in which the internal friction varies with grain size on either side of the maximum. New experimental data are presented to test this extended theory. The physical basis for the type of internal friction that is being investigated lies in the interplay between stress and temperature. Just as local fluctuations in temperature give rise to local fluctuations in stress, so likewise fluctuations in stress give rise to fluctuations in temperature. But temperature gradients give rise to necessarily irreversible thermal currents, and hence to internal friction. The theory for this type of internal friction has been developed quantitatively,³ and has been experimentally verified,4,5 for the particularly simple case of the transverse thermal currents accompanying transverse vibrations. Of more fundamental importance are the intercrystalline thermal currents accompanying all types of vibration. The variation in stress across grain boundaries arises from the elastic anisotropy and at least partial random orientation of the individual crystallites. An exact quantitative treatment of the internal friction due to these thermal currents is of course out of the question. However, much information can be obtained from general arguments.1,6 Thus when the frequency of vibration f is low, or when the grain size d is small, adjacent grains remain nearly in thermal equilibrium, and vibration proceeds isothermally with little internal friction. Again, when the frequency is high, or the grain size large, the heat flow per cycle is small, the vibration proceeds adiabatically with little internal friction. It is a pleasure to talk to you about the world economics of industrial minerals on this occasion of AIME's 100th anniversary. In order to fit this topic into the time and tenor of such a session as this where you are hearing subjects equally broad in scope one after the other, I will deal with the subject through the medium of eight minerals selected to illustrate import- ant economic factors. I must admit to some bias in the selection, since I picked personally familiar ones to elucidate facts of life in the industrial minerals business. It is a very interesting field, different in many respects from metals and certainly far different from petroleum. The minerals chosen are celestite, diamond, fluorspar, salt, sulfur, ilmenite, rutile and zircon. Celestite The market for celestite is mainly in the U. S. where it is consumed in the manufacture of strontium compounds for red-colored flares and other pyrotechnics, for the production of electrolytic zinc, for glass manufacture, and for the manufacture of ceramic ferrites. Smaller markets exist in Europe and Japan. Production comes from England, Mexico and Spain, and a new mining operation is being started in Nova Scotia. There is no significant production in the U. S. nor in the other principal consuming countries, except England; so it is mainly an international commodity. Celestite illustrates many of the factors important in the economics of industrial minerals. To have a marketable product, grade and freedom from deleterious elements are important for materials used by the chemical industry. In the celestite used to make strontium nitrate, calcium is the most objectionable of the commonly associated cations. Selling price is adversely affected because nitrate manufacturing costs are greatly increased if calcium is pre sent, hence less can be paid for the raw material. Meeting specifications can add significantly to the vendor's cost; hence a balance must be struck between the producer's capability and the consumer's requirements, permitting a reasonable profit for both. THE safety of mine workers has received more attention from both State and Federal law-making bodies than any other industry, a fact that shows clearly the hazardous nature of the industry. The last, but by no means the least, of the measures adopted for the protection of mine workers, is workmen's compensation legislation. This is proving to be a powerful instrument for greater safety in the industries, from the fact that special stress is laid not on how the accident happened or who may have been responsible for it, but on how badly the employee is hurt by it. The injured person does not have to employ lawyers to prove his case, because the mere fact of his employment is proof of his right to compensation. The immediate effect of such legislation is the certainty confronting the mine operator that he must pay out large sums for every accident, regardless of its cause, thus adding materially to the cost of the production of his coal. This fact furnished to the operator the strongest incentive to reduce the causes of accidents; not that the operator has ever lacked reasonable consideration for the welfare of his employees and a proper humane interest in their safety, but his engrossment in earning his daily livelihood has been so great that he has not felt that he had the time to devote to the safety of the operation. This time he must now find because of the actual-cash value of the prevention of accidents in his mines. This agency alone proved inadequate to bring about a material improvement because operators have always been willing enough to improve safety conditions when possible to do so within reasonable limits of their financial ability. The requirement in the Workmen's Compensation Laws of several of the States, that the mine operator shall insure as a guarantee of his ability to meet his compensation obligations, has furnished the needed incentive, moral and financial, necessary to the prompt and effective dissemination of a more general knowledge of the causes and

In ingots of silicon-killed carbon steel-made without addition of aluminum, transparent spherical or nearly spherical inclusions, up to about 0.15-mm diameter, are generally present. They may be glassy or crystallized, wholly or partially In steels of high carbon contents they consist of silica,4,12 in steels of lower carbon contents and, in consequence, higher oxygen contents, of iron-manganese-silicate with higher iron and manganese contents the lower the carbon content. Small silicate inclusions, about 0.01 mm or smaller, may occur, just as sulphide inclusions do, in portions that have been the last or nearly the last to freeze,l0,12,17 this location being verified by primary etching.10 Hence, it may be concluded that they have separated from liquid steel that has become enriched in oxygen through segregation during freezing. Silicate inclusions with a diameter larger than about 0.02 mm appear, at least in ingots of moderate size, to be distributed at random in relation to the primary structure and therefore may be assumed to have existed as droplets in the liquid steel before freezing started at the point in question. The average size of such large inclusions has been found to increase toward the axis1' and their amount to increase from the top downward in the axial region.2,10 It has been assumed that this accumulation is a result of the droplets being brought down by the slowly settling metal crystals.2 It has been suggested that large silicate inclusions generally form,6 or may form,'' by coagulation of smaller ones, or by small drops being caught by larger ones during the rising of the latter.9 The occasional occurrence of a large inclusion surrounded by a swarm of small ones has been taken as a proof of this mechanism but, as suggested later, may be explained in another way. On the basis of metallographic and cooling-rate studies of 15 U-Zr alloys, a new version of the 6 phase region of the U-Zr phase diagram is proposed. IN several published diagrams of U-Zr alloy system:' there is good agreement that at elevated temperatures complete solid solubility exists between y uranium and ß zirconium. Similarly, there is reasonably good agreement concerning the uranium-rich and zirconium-rich ends of the diagram. However, there is no agreement concerning the nature of the diagram at intermediate compositions and at temperatures below about 650°C. The early work of Saller et al.8 hows an intermediate phase, 6. In a later diagram by Saller and Rough' shown in Fig. 1, the d phase field is drawn with dotted lines, indicating doubt that this phase exists. The diagram of Summers-Smith2 does not show the d phase. More recently Holden and Seymour' have shown that in the composition range 40 to 60 wt pet Zr, the high-temperature ? phase, which is body-cen-tered-cubic, transforms to an ordered structure, 8. They found that the order-disorder transformation occurs between 595° and 610°C, and presented a diagram based on the study of four different alloy compositions. Most recently Saller et a1.5 presented a new diagram which differs with respect to the composition limits of the 8 field from the others proposed by these authors. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the boundaries of the d phase field. Experimental Procedures and Results Alloys—Buttons, weighing 80 g of 15 different alloy compositions were prepared by arc melting Mal-linckrodt uranium and iodide-process zirconium in a water-cooled crucible. A controlled atmosphere of argon and helium was maintained in the furnace. Prior to making each button, a sacrificial button of zirconium was melted to increase the purity of the furnace atmosphere. Each alloy was then melted six times to improve its homogeneity. Subsequently the alloy buttons were jacketed in copper and hot rolled to slabs at 775°C. From these slabs, specimens were machined for chemical, thermal, and metallographic analyses, Table I gives both the estimated chemical composition of the alloys, and the values which were obtained by analysis. The oxygen contents varied from 0.013 to 0.032 pet, nitrogen from 0.0014 to 0.014 pet, and carbon from 0.0013 to 0.011 pet. The purity of the alloys ranged from 99.947 to 99.975 pet. Thermal Analysis—The specimens for thermal analysis were blocks 11/4 x 1/4 x % in. The bead of a calibrated thermocouple was placed between two of these blocks and molybdenum wire was wrapped around the assembly. Each assembly was sealed in a quartz capsule having an argon atmosphere. The capsule was placed inside a refractory crucible which was heated in a furnace. The creation of unsymmetrical vertical or horizontal fractures in a producing well will result in a unique distortion of the normal shut-in pressures existing at the four surrounding wells. An electrical model study has been made to show how the shut-in pressures at the wells surrounding the fractured producing well may he used to estimate the size and orientation of vertical or horizontal fractures. The pressure differences at the four surrounding wells are recorded during production from the fractured well. The resulting pressure dato are matched from a table of several hundred possible fracture combinations. The table refers to the figure showing the effective size and orientation of the commercially created fracture. INTRODUCTION The creation of commercial fractures about oil and gas wells has led to considerable speculation as to the size and shape of the fractures. It is important that the size and shape be known in certain instances, especially when pressure maintenance programs are to be initiated. It was shown that if knowledge of a vertical fracture could be found that such information may be utilized in planning a waterflooding or gas cycling program and that in some cases the fractures might be utilized very effectively.' Other work showed that it may be desirable to create "pancake" fractures in certain reservoirs but that they should exist in a desirable range.' If the fractures are too large, they should be plugged prior to initiating a pressure maintenance program. If an irregular shaped "pancake" fracture is created, it is desirable to know the orientation of this fracture because similar but unreported studies have shown that "pancake" fractures may or may not substantially affect the sweep efficiencies and performance of the flooding or cycling program. Consequently, it may be desirable in some instances to estimate the effective size and orientation of the fracture. ANALOG An electrical model was used in making this study. The electrical model consisted of a circular reservoir approximately 8 in. in diameter, 1 in. thick and was filled with a dilute salt solution. A copper band formed the periphery of the reservoir. A vertical fracture was simulated by a copper strip soldered to the wire well located in the center of the reservoir. Vertical copper strips of various lengths and orientation were soldered to the wire well to represent vertical fractures in the reservoir. In studies reported here on vertical fractures it was arbitrarily assumed that two fractures originated at the well and extended out into the reservoir. An electrical potential was imposed between the wire well and the periphery of the tank. Plots of the iso-potentials are shown in Figs. 1 through 9. This model provides the steady-state isopotentials existing in a uniform, homogeneous circular reservoir having a vertically fractured well at its center. The permeability of the fracture is much greater than the permeability of the matrix proper. The effects of gravity are neglected. The Fry cocurrent in situ combustion project was carried out in a 3.3-acre portion of a lenticular body of Robinson sandstone of Lower Pennsylvanian age. This particular sand body is about 12,000 ft long and 3,500 ft wide; it varies in thickness from 0 to 55 ft, trends northeast-southwest, and occurs at depths between 880 and 936 ft. The reservoir is made lip of three distinct types of sandstone, each having characteristic reservoir properties. (See Table I.) Textural gradients, sedimentary structures, erosional basal contact, absence of marine fossils, and geometry of the sand body all indicate that the sandstone is of fluvial origin and part of an extensive complex of river-deposited sedirnents. Geographically oriented cores reveal that the direction of depositing currents was to the southwest, parallel with the sand-body trend. Directions of maximum pernleability also parallel the northeast-southwest trend. The layered nature of the sandstone reservoir and its directional properties have controlled the areal distribution of produced gas, the ignition behavior, and the vertical profile and horizontal extent of the conbustion zone. INTRODUCTION This paper is the first of a series of three papers that describe Marathon Oil Co.'s Fry in situ combustion test. This first paper contains the results of a detailed study of the geology and reservoir characteristics of the Robinson sandstone reservoir in which the Fry test was conducted. The second and third parts of this series report on the field operations' and performance. The geologic work reiated to cores cut through the combustion zone, and to the effect of reservoir properties on the combustion process is included in the third paper.' GEOLOGIC STUDY OF THE FRY RESERVOIR The close spacing of continuous cores in the Fry combustion site provided an unusual opportunity to study the details of distribution of lithology and reservoir properties within a petroleum reservoir. The objectives of the study were: 1. To determine the distribution of rock types within the Robinson sandstone in the Fry area; 2. To determine the relationship of porosity and permeability to rock properties and establish the distribution and homogeneity of reservoir properties; 3. To determine the origin of the Robinson reservoirs so that attempts could be made to predict the size, shape, distribution, extent and continuity of Robinson reservoirs; and 4. To determine what effects, if any, the reservoir rocks might have on the combustion process, so that the process might be better evaluated. AVAILABLE MATERIALS Continuous cores were cut from 14 wells in the vicinity of the Fry site. Ten of the cores are from within the 3.3-acre pattern; six of the 10 were cut prior to combustion, and four were cut through the combustion zone.
