Giant Yellowknife is located 600 air miles north of Edmonton on the north shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. In its 24 years of operation some 7,730,000 tons of ore have been treated to yield $175,000,000 worth of gold.The gold ore occurs at irregular intervals throughout a fold-like sericite schist zone cutting Precambrian rocks. The ore is characterized by 40 to 80% quartz - carbonate and about 10% pyrite and arsenopyrite. Considerable amounts of stibnite and antimony sulpho-salts are also present. Gold is finely divided in the native state existing in complex association with the sulphides. In most instances stibnite is barren but minor values are evident on occasion. Visible native Fold, quite prevalent in the early operating years, is, practically non-existent today. It was readily apparent from mineral dressing investigations conducted in .1944 that Giant ore would be difficult to treat. By 1948 a flow sheet had been established and operations began. In the ensuing years, changing ore characteristics necessitated modifications to some process steps and complete abandonment of others. By 1962 the major metallurgical problems were solved and all that remained was the refining of operating performance to its highest level.With one or two exceptions today's operation follows the practice established by 1962 (Fig. 1 - Flowsheet).

Today, underground exploration is spotlighted as an infinitely developable area. For this purpose, many tunneling technologies were created. And until this very day, many techniques are being developed for more efficient underground movement. Although previous technologies have been developed and now being used in various forms like TMB, struck propulsion method and hydraulic propulsion method, it is hard to find a robot type exploring in small scale. But development of small scale underground exploration robot is a promising research subject for its usage in examination of soil, mineral, and subterranean resources, investigation of hazardous regions, and the military. So we developed a robot that can dig and move underground, inspired from the motion of earthworm and mole cricket. Earthworm and mole cricket dig the soil in the front and draw it off backward, so that they can move forward. We developed a mechanism that uses 2 rotating solid of revolution (bits) for pulverizing the firmly united soil in the front and put it inside the body. The bits rotate in the opposite direction of each other. While moving forward, the soil in the front moves along the spiral on the bit and is saved inside the body. The soil saved inside is taken out through an outlet in the back by a ventilation system. The ventilation system on the ground blows through a hosepipe connected to inner part of the robot and the air blows off the soil. The moving mechanism of exploring underground can be classified into 2 parts. One is to fix the blade link on the soil in a form of 4-bar link. The other one is to move forward rotating the whole link. When the blade link system for movement rotates a certain degree, one blade link is fixed, while the other one is folded in. When 2 blade links of different length rotate as it is, different torque is applied on each link. By the law of action and reaction, the link that has larger torque leads the rotation and movement.

The paper deals with three case studies: (a) the handling of wet concentrates (5 to 8 per cent moisture) through feed bins; (b) the handling of the same product in rail cars; and (c) the handling of dry concentrates (less than 0.5 per cent moisture) through feed bins. In each case, the paper discusses the problems of rat-holing. In each of cases (a) and (c), there is a discussion on the consequent extreme variations of feed rates coming from the feeders, making automation of process control difficult to impossible. Currently available bin-flow theory and flow property tests are used as aids in redesigning the bins. The paper concludes with illustrations of the final results after the redesigned hoppers were installed and tested. There is also a discussion on the advantages of the new mass-flow bins on adjacent feeder performance.

Introduction When the investigation of radioactive ores began at the Mines Branch about five years ago it was at once evident that improved chemical methods for the determination of uranium were essential. The published methods available were time-consuming and insensitive and were lacking in accuracy and precision. It was desirable to obtain methods which would be rapid, sensitive, and accurate. They should also allow for the possible presence of any interfering elements and should be adaptable to routine analysis by technicians. Chemical methods are necessary to provide standard analysed samples for counting and to check analyses by counter methods. Moreover, counter methods cannot be used, and only chemical methods are suitable, when the sample is not in equilibrium, as with weathered minerals and leach residues. As leaching processes are improved, more sensitive chemical methods are required for the increasingly lower content of uranium in the leached residues. When the leaching process reaches the plant stage, speed of analysis becomes more important, without sacrificing accuracy. The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly .the methods used at the Mines Branch for the chemical analysis of uranium in ores. These methods represent the results of investigations by a number of groups in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.

The Duparquet mining camp situated along the Quebec segment of the Porcupine-Destor Fault was the site of gold exploitation from 1933 to 1956 and 1988 to 1991. Numerous gold showings and deposits straddle the fault. An ongoing regional metallogenic study by the Quebec Geological Survey has identified five main types of gold mineralization, each showing a distinct style, alteration, control, metal content, and timing. In order to maximise the impact of this study, a 3D regional common-earth-model was constructed along a critical segment of the Porcupine-Destor Fault with the gOcad® technology. The realisation of this model required the maximum use of the public SIGEOM numerical database, as well as the recovery of significant private data from exploration company partners. The 3D model is also a powerful new dynamic exploration tool, which can be queried using geological criteria characteristic of the different gold deposit types. This 3D model can be modified and improved continuously by adding data from new drilling, mapping or geophysical surveys. The case of the Porcupine-Destor Fault illustrates the importance of 3D common-earth-modelling in delivering refined technological geological syntheses likely to attract significant investments from the mining exploration industry, especially for deep exploration programs within mature mining camps.

In 1997, a group of Canadian mining companies met to review the Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) program and to consider future activities. They concluded that (1) that Canadian industry and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) should fund a small secretariat in Ottawa to support technology transfer in Canada and, (2) that it was important for industry to continue the momentum of MEND on an international scale. The need for the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) was strongly endorsed by consultants, company, university, and government experts from Australia, Canada, and the United States who convened in Vancouver in February 1998. The initial focus was the development of a solid knowledge base covering the collective experience of INAP?s members to promote the dissemination of successful practices, the identification of knowledge gaps, and the formulation of effective research proposals. The sharing of information on past successes and failures alone was viewed as sufficient justification for the formation of INAP. INAP was officially launched in October 1998, and is now an effective, industry-based initiative to globally coordinate research and development in the management of sulphide mine waste. Significant improvements in the management of sulphidic mine materials through knowledge sharing, research, and development of technology by INAP will reduce liability associated with acid drainage. Integrating seismic reflection, borehole geophysical, and physical rock property studies is an effective means of mapping lithological contacts and structures in the crystalline crust. At Les Mines Selbaie in the northern volcanic zone of the Late Archean Abitibi Subprovince, a high-frequency seismic reflection profile has provided the first images of deep crustal structures of this important polymetallic mine site. Physical rock property and borehole geophysical studies confirm that prominent seismic reflections can be caused by lithological contacts, faults and sulphide mineralization. At Les Mines Selbaie, the first two of these are shown by this study. Clearly identifiable reflection images from sulphide mineralization have not been demonstrated in analysis of the profile. The seismic images provide useful information about gross structure in the vicinity of Les Mines Selbaie. They can also place important constraints on the sequence of tectonic events and, therefore, can aid future deep exploration programs.

Nonlinear time-dependent response analysis of salt cavern under extreme loads in disaster mode is of great importance to the safety and disaster prevention of gas storage group. Uncontrolled blowout is one of the extreme conditions for compressed-air cavern operation. Based on the geological structure of Jintan salt deposit, China, the numerical model of the complete process of water solution, cyclic operation, and internal pressure runaway was developed. The effects of rapid unloading on the stress filed, the progressive failure of surrounding rock, the volume convergence of storage cavern, and the ground subsidence were simulated employing an elasto-viscoplastic damage constitutive equation for rock salt. The results indicate that the damage and failure zones propagate much larger in the mudstone interlayer than in the host salt. The volume of damage and failure zones surrounding salt cavern induced by unloading process is 5~6 times that of cyclic injection and withdrawal process. The average volume convergence rate of salt cavern reaches 0.012%/d~0.013%/d, which is 6~6.5 times that induced by cyclic operation. The ground subsidence exhibits a typical funnel curve. The affected region of ground subsidence due to rapid unloading in the blowout period is about two times the maximum cavern diameters. Furthermore, double cavern analysis reveals that the interaction between adjacent caverns may be ignored so long as the pillar width is larger than two times the maximum cavern diameters.

The Salmita Gold Mine is located 240 air kilometres northea t of Yellowknife on the east shore of Matthews Lake. Salmita is one of several gold showings which are regionally associated with the steep easterly dipping contact zone between mafic, intermediate and fe lsic volcanics to the west and overlying finely laminated argillaceous sediments to the east. The volcanic assemblage forms a narrow 2 m to 7 m wide north to northwesterly trend ing Belt of Yellowknife Supergroup Archaen greenstone rocks. The contact zone exhibits exhalite character and the increased sulphide content provides a di stinct VLF-EM , IP/Resisti vi ty and/or magnetic signature. Gold occurs at or near this contact in three main settings: associated with si liceous vein-like structures; with finely disseminated sulphides within ericitic altered upper fe lsic tuffaceous unit ; or with quartz in narrow shear zones within the overlying sediment . The B-Vein is of the former type with free mi ll ing gold occurring within a highly sil iceous zone having an average widtn of 1.69 m. Alteration is intense within the immediately su rrounding host lithologies and includes the development of si lica, carbonate, sulphide, sericite and chlorite with minor graphite, epidote. tourmaline and scheelite. The mineable zone above the 4th level (-200 m) ha an average strike of 160 m and is divided into three south plunging ore shoots separated by the regional Salmita Shear Zone in the south and by a low-grade structural hiatus in the north. Production from the B-Vein commenced in August 1983 based on a diluted in situ ore reserve of 140,000 t grading 26.6 git Au . As of December 31, 1985, a total of 131 ,537 t grading 27.8 git Au have been mined at a ra.te of 160 t per day and a 96.4 percent recovery, to produce 3,522 ,000 g (113,227 ounces) of gold . Current (January I, 1986) reserves total 45,500 t grading 37 g/t Au down to the 10th level (-500 m) .

To meet the business objectives of a metallurgical project, there is often a need for new and untried technology or equipment, whose very novelty can present serious risks to meeting those objectives. The key risk management approach is a rigorous stepwise progression from theoretical evaluations and laboratory tests to pilot plant trials. These must be followed by demonstration-scale trials before final construction of a commercial scale plant, paying particular attention to the magnitude of the scale-up between phases. Success depends on following a well-defined program, not eliminating any steps, and ensuring adequate resources are available to the development team. Chapter 6 discusses the nature of technology risks to metallurgical plant projects, and the rigorous management practices needed to identify, analyze, evaluate, and avoid or mitigate them.

ABSTRACT: Despite many years of practical applications in mineral processing plants, the potential of column flotation has still not been fully exploited. The challenge in measuring some key variables is certainly an important contributing factor to this situation. Reliable online measurement of variables, such as the froth depth, bias, gas hold-up, frother concentration, bubble surface area flux, and bubble size distribution, provides opportunities for the application of various advanced control strategies and real-time optimization based on an economic criterion. For several years, Université Laval’sLaboratoire d’observation et d’optimisation des procédés researchers have been working on these opportunities. This paper describes the most recent advances and current research trends.

"This paper reviews the installation, start-up, and operation of a comprehensive monitoring and targeting management technique in which all plant utilities (i.e., electricity, natural gas, compressed air, and water) are managed as controllable resources in the same way that raw materials, mined ore, personnel and capital are managed.The essential elements of monitoring and targeting (M&T) include:•gathering in a systematic, disciplined way the utility information by energy account centres;•closely monitoring the utilities used in each centre and comparing them with production on a common time base (e.g., kWh/ton per day);•bench marking and target setting to pro-vide attainable energy reduction goals which can be further refined as they are achieved; and•establishing an implementation plant that may provide efficiency enhancing benefits to various operating areas within the plant.The M&T system will reduce utility consumption per unit of production on a continuing basis.This would translate into sustained operating cost and waste. M&T will also provide better information for assessing the plant operation and progressively implementing further enhancements."

Estimation of gas holdup from electrical conductivity measurements has been used in lab and industrial installations. The approach is based on the application of Maxwell's model, which relates the concentration of a dispersed phase in a continuous medium to measurements of the electrical conductivity of the dispersed phase, continuous medium and the resulting mixture (dispersion). When applied to inferring the collection zone gas holdup in a three phase system and to facilitate real-time on-line measurement, the slurry is assumed to behave as the continuous medium and gas bubbles as a nonconducting dispersed phase. This article derives an equation for estimating gas holdup in a three phase system, eliminating the assumption that the slurry behaves as a continuous medium but rather as a dispersion of non-conducting solid particles in water. In this formulation only water behaves as the continuous medium in the sense of Maxwell, and gas holdup in a three phase system is then calculated from the application of the Maxwell model twice: (1) to determine solid content in a two-phase system, and (2) to determine solid plus gas holdup in a three phase system. To validate the new equation and quantify the errors incurred by assuming slurry is the continuous phase a laboratory flotation cell was instrumented to continuously measure the conductivity of two and three phase dispersions with known solids contents. As the amount of gas in a lab flotation machine is difficult to measure directly or by another indirect technique such as using pressure signals, 2.5 mm dielectric plastic spheres having a density of ca. 1.3 g/cm3 were used instead of air bubbles for validation. Experimental results demonstrated that the continuous medium assumption underestimates gas holdup and that the resulting bias error increases linearly with the solid content and decreases with the magnitude of gas holdup.

Cupreous pyrite deposits in Cyprus have many geologic similarities to Canadian massive sulphide copper-zinc ores as well as certain significant differences. A comparison of the Cyprus and Canadian deposits indicates a complex genetic history for the latter and suggests that their origin should be re-examined. The Cyprus ores occur in subaqueous extrusive rocks near and at the top of a Cretaceous volcanic pile or igneous complex. The rocks have not been deformed, nor have they been deeply buried or deeply eroded. Apparently the ores formed near or at surface in the top of the volcanic pile by a volcanic-exhalative process and from an ore-fluid of volcanic derivation. The Canadian deposits are of comparable composition and have similar geologic set-tings, but occur in the most ancient Precambrian rocks. Their enclosing Keewatin greenstones have, in most places, been deformed, regionally metamorphosed and invaded by granitic intrusions. Comparison suggests that the Canadian ores also formed initially near surface in ancient Keewatin volcanic complexes by a syngenetic, volcanic-exhalative process. "Much progress has been made over the last several years in the ability to measure flotation cell hydrodynamic parameters in both the laboratory and plant. These techniques have allowed fundamental research to proceed to determine the effects that frother chemistry has on the main hydrodynamic parameters (gas hold up, bubble size) as well as on the amount of froth generation and water content of froth. A research program was begun that brought together a team consisting of private companies and a University with expertise in hydrodynamic characterization (McGill), flotation reagent applications (Flottec) and chemical synthesis (Sasol N.A.) with the purpose of characterizing frother chemistries with two goals in mind: Determine which frother chemistry can provide optimized cell hydrodynamics; and, create new frother chemistries with specific hydrodynamic properties.This paper describes the key steps that were taken that led to the development of new frother chemistry for use in flotation.The first step was the characterization of the major frother chemical families in a two phase system. The parameters measured were gas hold up, bubble size, froth height and water carrying rate at different concentrations and gas velocities.Analysis of the data indicated that definite patterns existed between frother chemistry and hydrodynamics and showed that frothers could be grouped into classes. More importantly, by modifying known frothers through chemical reaction it was shown that these frothers could be moved from one class to another. As a result of this better understanding of the interdependence of hydrodynamic and chemical properties, a new frother chemistry was proposed that was predicted to perform similarly to MIBC.The new frother was synthesized and hydrodynamic testing confirmed that the chemical performed similar to MIBC. Laboratory flotation tests were conducted on two different ore types that also confirmed the similar performance of the new chemical and MIBC. Subsequently, the new product was placed on a plant for a short period of time. The results showed that the product was an excellent frother but increased the flotation rate slightly more than MIBC at the same addition rate.Further research showed that the new frother chemistry was a family of products. By changing the reaction the resultant products could be made to be slightly weaker or stronger than MIBC but that this chemistry cannot provide hydrodynamic/froth characteristics similar to strong frothers like glycols and glycol ethers. Further work is planned to conduct longer plant trials to confirm the efficacy of this new frother family."

Introduction Since the discovery of a major oil pool at Leduc, Alberta, on February 13th, 1947, the long spell of 'oil drought' in Western Canada is now being turned into an oil and gas flood which requires immediate action to obtain the optimum economic benefits. The Woodbend, Section 9, and Okalta extensions of the Leduc field itself have been established; the Redwater pool, lying thirty-seven miles northeast of Edmonton, has been discovered and is being drilled up, and the Imperial Schoepp No. 1 or Golden Spike discovery holds promise of something phenomenal in view of the 500 feet of oil-saturated coral-reef porosity whose areal extent is not known. Imperial Stanolind Barrhead No. 1, northwest of Edmonton, revealed the presence of oil in the Madison, and just recently Gulf N.J. Ellis No. 1, some sixty miles southeast of Leduc, found commercial production in the Leduc D-2 discovery zone. In addition to these Paloeozoic discoveries, gas and oil reserves have also been established in the Upper and Lower Cretaceous, which must be penetrated by all tests on the way through the geological column to the Devonian. If ever there appeared to be an index of 'things to come' in the oil industry, this is it. However, without these recent discoveries the picture in Western Canada does and always did, look very promising indeed. A brief survey of the geological setting in Western Canada is the object of this contribution.

"A survey of 281 mineral exploration agreements examines the ratios among three ways that may be used to purchase an interest in a mineral property, viz: pay cash, pay shares and make future expenditures on the property.The dollar value of the future expenditures exceeds that of cash or shares by about nine times in most of the 110 agreements that contain cash-expenditure or share-expenditure components. Results suggest that cash and shares are treated about the same in terms of value.Buyers and sellers have opposing priorities for the way that they prefer to purchase a mineral property. These opposing priorities should give rise to a perceived 50:50 balance between cash/share payment and future expenditures to satisfy the idealized situation described by most definitions of fair market value (FMV). This balance between cash/share payments and future expenditures appears to be rationalized in negotiations to a FMV when expenditures are nine times greater than cash and/or payments.On this basis, it is proposed that the FMV of a property may be determined by aggregating the dollar amount of the cash/share payments plus one-ninth the dollar value of future expenditures, as set forth in the respective purchase agreement, and proportionately applying such aggregate to full property value."

Yukon, one of the most potentially accessible, relatively undeveloped, regions of Canada, has major mineral possibilities. The Klondike placer gold fields and the Mayo silver-lead ?district are the sole major producers but large base-metal re-serves have been discovered in re-cent years and important asbestos deposits are now being explored. Several major exploration companies are active in this region despite short seasons, permafrost overburden, remoteness, lack of transportation, and resultant high costs. Pro-posed new roads can be expected to accelerate development. At ?present the major future mineral possibilities are considered to be lead-zinc, copper, aslbestos, silver-lead, gold, and mineral fuels. These and other mineral possibilities are outlined for various geological subdivisions of Yukon. Major favourable metallogenic features of Yukon include complexity of rock types and structures, widening of the Cordillera with cross-trends, and variety and quantity of mineralization found even with limited prospecting. Comparisons with southern 'British Columbia and the U.S. Cordillera suggest that further exploration will result in discovery and development of more major ore deposits and reserves which will eventually revolutionize economy of mining in Yukon. Such mineral resources, with interior petroleum and natural gas possibilities, and ?huge coastal hydroelectric power potential, are the foundations of a much larger future mining industry in Yukon.

"Introduction This paper will discuss the current operations of Westar Mining Ltd. and give a brief history of the company and of the Crowsnest Pass area. Westar is an integrated company involved in mining, processing and marketing coal from its mines in southeastern British Columbia and shipping coal from Westshore Terminals at Roberts Bank, located just south of Vancouver, B.C. It is two-thirds owned by the B.C. Resources Investment Corporation and one-third owned by the Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan and a consortium of Japanese coal consumers. Operations in southeast British Columbia consist of four coal mines and two processing facilities (Fig. 1). The Elkview Coal Processing Plant near Sparwood, B.C. receives its raw coal from Balmer operations (Harmer open pit), Balmer South (Panel 6) an underground hydraulic mine, and Balmer North an underground room-and-pillar mine. The fourth mine, Greenhills, an open-pit operation, is located near Elkford, B.C. and has its own processing plant. The Balmer mining and processing complex is the largest metallurgical coal facility in Canada producing up to 7 .5 million tonnes of clean coal per year. The Greenhills operation, completed in mid-1983, has a capacity of 2.8 million tonnes. The high-grade metallurgical and thermal coal produced is primarily for export markets. The major customers are Japan, Korea, Brazil, Pakistan, Chile and Taiwan.Our coal and that produced by other mines in Alberta and British Columbia is shipped to the international markets through Westshore Terminals Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary. Westshore will have an annual capacity of 22 million tonnes of coal and accommodate ships of up to 250,000 dead weight tonnes by 1984 when its current expansion program is completed."

With the opening up of new mines in Western Canada and the increased mechanization of underground coal mines, the study of gas emissions is of increasing importance in providing safe working places underground.
