In the spring of 1993, construction began on an ambitious building project in Boston, Massachusetts. The Shriners organization committed to offer state-of-the-art adolescent burn treatment and rehabilitation in its Boston facility by expanding in a most unusual way. In short, the concept included installation of caisson foundations and perimeter slurry wall panels to enable construction of a completely independent structure around and above the existing, continually functioning, hospital. Two distinct phases of work were detailed in the Contract Documents. At the completion of the first phase, patients will be moved into the new building, above, and demolition of the old structure, beneath, will be performed. In Phase I, sections of the slurry wall and caissons, located outside the footprint of the existing building, were planned. The next phase of the work includes the installation of the remaining caissons and slurry wall. Once excavation is completed, the balance of the new hospital structure will be constructed from the bottom upward, connecting to the under side of the new structure.

Micropiles are ideally suited to seismic retrofit applications. Their high tensile and compressive capacity can sustain the large concentrated loads induced during seismic events. Micropiles can be drilled through and grouted into the wide variety of soil and rock materials encountered in seismically active zones, using equipment that operates effectively within existing structures. Micropiles have seen increased acceptance and are now widely specified for retrofit work in the San Francisco Bay Area. While installation equipment and the structural configuration of micropiles have been largely unchanged since the early 1990?s, market forces have pressured both engineers and contractors to continually optimize the cost and performance of seismic upgrades. Instead of the contractor simply developing stronger, stiffer and cheaper micropiles as isolated structural elements in response to a specification, focus has shifted to maximizing the efficiency of micropiles within the overall foundation system. The case history of seismic retrofit project in Berkeley, CA is presented to illustrate the collaboration between designers and drilling specialist which resulted in a structurally efficient and cost effective design. The seismic retrofit program for this 6-story concrete building was developed through careful consideration of the geotechnical and structural mechanisms of resistance, in combination with the deformation response of high capacity micropiles (2670 kN) under ultimate loading conditions. This case history describes the interactive project development emphasizing performance-based design and field testing to optimize the micropile foundations and the overall structural system.

Currently, deep foundation designs for the service limit state are deterministic in nature. The settlements and lateral deflections of deep foundations are calculated by means of numerical techniques whereby the foundation-soil interactions are characterized by discrete load transfer curves such as t-z or p-y curves. The noted deficiency of the deterministic approach is that the uncertainties arising from various sources, such as soil properties and model errors are not considered. To address this deficiency, a performance-based reliability design methodology is developed using Monte Carlo statistical methods. The performance based design criteria are defined in terms of the specified allowable displacement. The input to the numerical solution techniques, including the soil strength parameters, unit weight of the soil are relevant to the generation of the load transfer curves are treated as random field. The well established random field generator algorithm, local averaging subdivision, is used to generate random samples of input, where the mean values, variances, the probability distribution, and correlation structures are required statistical parameters for these random variables. The objective of the performance based reliability design is to determine the optimized foundation dimensions so that the probability of failure is less than the target probability of failure. The probability of failure by the Monte Carlo approach is simply the ratio of the number of unsatisfactory performance to the sample size. A numerical example for laterally loaded drilled shaft is given to illustrate the application of the methodology. The incorporation of the correlation length is shown to be critical for properly accounting for the site soil spatial variability.

"Malaysian offshore and surrounding region are favorable to the installation of driven piles. During the design phase, pile driveability analysis plays a major role in pile make-up design to suit and selection of the feasible hammer, besides defining acceptance criteria to ensure a certain level of confidence of its fitness for purpose. The accuracy level of driveability analyses depends substantially on the selection of its parameters that best represent the in-situ scenario. The most uncertain of the parameters are those related to the soil model. It is noted in various projects in the region, that the consideration of suitable soil resistance to driving, coupled with soil dynamic parameters, significantly affects driving sequence planning, design, material, hammer selection and most importantly pile acceptance criteria. This is particularly relevant for a region that contains predominantly clayey subsoil resulting in large diameter, long friction piles susceptible to driving disturbances and slow strength recovery. Various researchers suggested suitable dynamic parameters and soil resistance during driving calibrated to specific regions. Regional experience suggests a set of soil degradation and parameters to suit the different stages of driving which is corroborated by pile monitoring records during continuous and delayed driving scenarios. The most sensitive amongst all dynamic soil parameters is the skin damping in clay. Smith’s wave theory approach considers a conservative assumption in selecting the parameters in absence of site-specific data, while a different approach may be adopted based on consistency of the clay for a site where the geotechnical parameters are well defined. This paper summarizes some independent studies on the effects of variations in dynamic parameters and resistance at different stages of driving and suitability of choices of different pile make-up and hammers for an optimum design. Similar experiences, coupled with simulation studies and back-analyses of available driving records suggest a reasonable judgment for the region.INTRODUCTIONFixed structures are generally supported in the in-place condition on a pile foundation those may either be driven or drilled & grouted piles depending on the subsoil. The piles may be driven inside the jacket legs or drilled through individual skirts normally grouped in clusters at the base of each leg. The types of subsoil dealt with in the Peninsular Malaysia and Gulf of Thailand surrounding region are conducive to the installation of driven piles only. The design of an offshore pile is fundamentally the optimization of pile length, size and make-up those are suitable to the requirement and supply. An interactive effort combining aspects related to geotechnical, structural and constructability are required to converge into a feasible, safe and economic solution. Other than the checking of the installation feasibility using a set of hammers in a given environment, driveability analysis is also used to define acceptance criteria for a majority of the offshore piles. Unlike short and end bearing piles in sand/soft rock, the piles in clayey subsoil regime often could not be rested on a dense strata where it could be met by a definite set criteria. Usually a measurement of blow counts determined and defined by driveability analyses forms the acceptance criteria to ensure a certain level of confidence of its fitness for the purpose coupled with an optimum penetration. While softness and uncertainty of the soil strata at target penetration may be resulted in possible overdrive, an unusual delay or the presence of an unidentified cemented layer or a boulder may cause early refusal or underdrive scenario. Hence, accuracy of the investigation, driveabilty study as well as the precautionary measures to avoid delays during driving are of equal importance."

This places a high gamble on the bidders and the Lump Sum Price will be higher. B. Inaccurate elevations on soil reports. a. Surprises in depths - over or under design bid bottom elevations. 1. Requires backfill and extraction of casing that is too short for the greater depth of the drilled shaft. 2. Redrill utilizing longer casings. 3. Softer earth (backfill) can cause difficulties in redrilling such as less quantity extracted on the auger and maintaining plumbness. 4. Greater concrete overrun. b. Extreme under depths. 1. Excessive concrete is placed as a result of planning for a deeper shaft. c. Geotechnical report that does not supply a layout of boring locations. d. Design Engineer does not have a basic knowledge of how a caisson is installed.

In order to get a clear overview of the grouting works carried out, to avoid misinterpretations of the data and functions shown on the display of the grout monitoring device, it is recommended to keep the flow rate as constant as possible. Obviously, at the beginning of the process, the flow rate will increase from nil to the selected "basic" value. An important question frequently addressed is also how to reduce the flow rate in nearing the GIN limit so to finally reach the target intensity. Depending on the actual conditions, there are different manners to proceed. However, the following one appears to be the most convenient. It is represented on Figure 25. Being GIN the target intensity, two new limits at, let's say, 0.95 GIN and at 1.05 GIN as shown in the figure should be defined. The selected basic grout flow rate "q0", is kept as constant as possible all along the grouting process until the 0.95 GIN limit is reached. The flow is then reduced step wise to 2/3 q0, 1/3 q0 and zero at crossing each of the three limits. A similar rule can be used in respect to the maximum pressure, while for the maximum volume the process can be stopped at one time. Obviously the number of successive limits and thus the number of steps in reducing the pressure, as well as the width of the fringes defined in said way may be adapted to the local conditions.

It is my understanding that the Scandinavians have done some fundamental work on durability. I have seen a study published whereby the author, Helen Anderson, comments on the durability of polyurethane grouts and there was -if I am not mistaken- a reference made to another Scandinavian testing institute comparing durability of the polyurethane to cement grout under the same type of circumstances. Circumstances are important so we should actually ask the gentleman to shed some light on this particular method because apparently Scandinavia is the place where durability has been taken very seriously and has been well researched.

When emptying the drilling tool, the clamp cylinders are opened and the complete unit is swung sideways."

"Grouted helical piles allow significant increase in pile capacity with low additional cost over that of conventional helical piles. They can be particularly advantageous in sites where installation disturbance can reduce or even eliminate the pile shaft resistance. For helical piles with slender shafts, a grout column offers increased buckling resistance under compression loading, and may reduce the potential settlement required to mobilize the bearing component of their plates. This paper investigates the performance of grouted helical piles installed in loose sand. Grouted helical piles were constructed and tested in a controlled laboratory environment. Helical piles with hollow pipe shaft and single helix were grouted during installation. The grout was injected into the soil under high pressure through two nozzles placed above the piles helices. The load test results showed significant improvement in the performance and load carrying capacity of the helical pile due to the formation of a cylindrical grout column along the entire shaft leading to a higher shaft resistance contribution to the total pile capacity. The results suggest that grouted helical piles with slender hollow shaft could be used to support large structural loads. INTRODUCTIONHelical piles are widely used as a deep foundation system for different engineering applications. They represent an attractive foundation option because of their cost effectiveness, ease of installation even in limited access areas, low levels of noise and vibrations, and their ability to be installed through ground water without casing. In addition, they allow immediate loading upon installation. Helical piles are installed into the ground by applying a mechanical torque to the pile head. The installation torque monitoring provides a kind of quality control during the construction of helical piles. It could be used in predicting the ultimate pile capacity using several capacity-torque correlations (Livneh and Elnaggar 2008; and Hoyt and Clemence 1989).However, helical piles installation can cause soil disturbance within the annular zone affected by the pile helices. This disturbance can introduce fissures within the pile cylindrical failure surface (Vesic 1971; Mooney el al. 1985; and Zhang 1999). Thus, the shear strength of the soil decreases along the affected zone. Bagheri and El Naggar (2013) evaluated the installation effects of helical piles in sand. They reported that as the helical blade proceeds into the ground, sand within the cylindrical path circumscribed by the helices experiences torsional and vertical shearing accompanied by sand displacement and stress changes. This process is more pronounced in the case of multi-helices and large diameter anchors. Bagheri and El Naggar (2016) evaluated the installation effects of helical piles in structured clay. They indicated that the behavior of the helical pile and its capacity are significantly affected by the degree of soil de-structuring induced by the penetration of the pile shaft and helices. In addition to the installation disturbance, helical piles have other drawbacks including; high potential settlement required to fully mobilize the bearing component of their plates, low buckling resistance of their slender shafts, and the incomplete rigidity of the coupling joints along the pile shaft that allow some lateral movement under compression loading (Vickars and Clemence 2000)."

Welcome to DFI45! our first on-line annual meeting. We cannot deny the severe impacts that the COVID19 pandemic is having in our industry and our lives. We extend our support to all of our members that have been impacted in many different ways. But through the middle of this difficult and challenging times, our beloved annual conference emerges, trying to re-unite our industry and remind us why we love what we do so much. DFI45 was not originally planned to be delivered virtually, but as our world changed, we adapted. Adversity became an opportunity to re-invent our annual conference. Thanks to the vision of our Organizing Committee, we saw the amazing new possibilities and DFI45 is today a reality. Our theme for this year is People + Purpose + Passion. This theme was decided before the COVID 19 pandemic started, but today it is more relevant than ever before. We are a group of very diverse people at DFI. Our organization includes Contractors, Consultants, Suppliers, and Academics just to name a few sub-groups. But we all have a common purpose and try to find common ground. We are all extremely passionate about what we do, and this excitement is really what makes this organization what it is today. This conference celebrates this passion as you can see in our three main Keynote Sessions. On a local scale, we want to go back and remember the contribution of our industry to our beloved National Monuments in Washington D.C. On a national scale, we want to explore and recap the development of Government Guidelines and Specifications that became the world standards. And finally, we want to close the conference with a session celebrating the family legacy and share amazing stories of families with multiple generations working in our industry. Besides our Keynote Lectures, the conference is full of exciting content such as several case histories, experimental research in deep foundations, applications of new technologies, business aspects and risk management considerations for deep foundations, just to list a few. We also have our now traditional events such as the Hal Hunt Lecture, Awards Reception, DFI Educational Trust 5K Fundraiser, etc. For the first time, all this content will be delivered using different virtual formats, including on-demand presentations, plenary sessions, interactive chat rooms, etc. We are excited about these possibilities. To conclude, we need to recognize the people that against all odds made this conference a reality. First our sponsors, they adapted to the most abrupt change never thought before, and they always stayed there with us, providing unconditional support. Without them no conference is possible. Next, our Organizing Committee that re-invented the concept of an annual conference and found new and exciting ways to make this happen! Our Technical Program Committee led by our Technical Program Chairs, Jennifer Nicks and Gregg Piazza, showed us that nothing is impossible. And last, but not least, the amazing DFI staff that make dreams reality. It has been an honor to serve as the Conference Chair for DFI45. Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) technique represents an important technological advance in the construction of piles in soft soils. The possibility of excavation under the water table with no need for drilling fluids, along with high productivity, have resulted in this technique?s becoming widespread in many countries. However, CFA technology has limitations because of its difficulty in penetrating hard layers and cross strata with cobbles and boulders. In these situations, pile verticality may be an additional problem. The Cased Augered Pile (CAP) technique consists of penetrating the soil with an auger housed in a casing. Two independent rotary heads sliding along the rig mast operate the auger and the casing. By adjusting the height of the casing shoe and auger bit according to soil type, it is possible to drill piles in very severe conditions - in the presence of cobbles and boulders - and to socket the pile into the rock. The use of a steel casing enables improved pile verticality. Therefore, the CAP technique is also used to construct secant piles to be used as diaphragm walls. The limitations of this technology are the depth, usually no more than 27 m (88 feet), and the size of the rig that supports the drilling tool, no less than 70 t (77 short tons) in working conditions. This paper illustrates CAP technology, the drilling system, and the characteristics of concrete and steel reinforcement and offers a case study of the Palermo-Carini second railway line, which used CAP to construct the new 30 km (18.6 mi) railway line, 20 km (12.4 mi) of which passes through the very congested downtown area of Palermo. More than 300,000 m (186.4 mi) of piles have been drilled in dense calcarenite formations with unconfined compressive strength of 15-25 MPa (2,200-3,600 lb/inch2), soft clay, and silt formations.

The field studies conducted at the experimental-production sites allowed to develop the technology of arranging drilling piles in loess subsiding grounds over 25 m deep and over 250 mm in diameter, to select optimal compositions of flush fluids, to assess the carrying capacity and field of use of the piles under test and to produce a special equipment. The dependence of the ultimate axial pressing-in load on pile driving into the non-subsiding section, its diameter and method of fulfillment, as well as the ground moisture dependence of the specific ground resistance along the piles' side surface within the limits of the subsiding section were determined. The study results allowed to reduce the length of the work piles and the number of bars in the reinforcement frames. The obtained experimental data enable to give a preliminary assessment of the piles' carrying capacity under complicated engineering-geological conditions of subsiding grounds.

The redevelopment of Bow Bells House in London has thrown up a number of challenges that will increasingly be faced by developers of congested sites. In the context of pile reuse this paper examines four key issues: 1. The Developer?s perspective on sustainability, cost, programme and risk management. 2. The nature of pile testing including timing, the balance of extent of intrusive works whilst retaining the existing piles and identifying representative levels of testing. Four key elements of investigation; geometry, integrity, durability and capacity are evaluated. 3. In terms of design this paper supports the adoption of alternative probabilistic methods aligned with communicating to Clients in terms of acceptable ?probability/risk of failure? in place of a factor of safety approach. 4. The project also highlights a number of issues that will require greater attention to maximise the future reuse potential such as foundation load transfer platforms and promoting developments based on early collaborative framework design and contracting across the supply chain.

This paper presents the design and construction of the foundation for a major high-rise real estate development on the west side of Manhattan. Arup was retained by Underpinning and Foundation Skanska to design a secant pile wall as excavation support for a proposed two-level basement of a new 23-story residential building located at 100 11th Avenue and West 19th Street. The secant pile wall will also act as the permanent basement retaining wall for the new building. The site is bounded on two sides by existing structures and is underlain by a thick deposit of very soft organic silt and clay. Therefore, the potential for ground movements and their impact on an adjacent structure bearing on shallow footings were of the utmost concern. This paper addresses the design and construction considerations associated with this secant wall, as well as installation details. Measured wall movements are also used to assess the validity of the pre-construction soil strength and stiffness design parameters.

I would say mainly the cost. I showed only 3 cases. One of them was the one that Allen just described and there were two other cases. In those cases it was fairly easy to develop a solution using limited mobility grout to treat the soft soils suitable for the limited bearing pressures required by the structures. LMG readily provided a fairly reliable system for the foundation support at a reasonable cost.
