Learning is an iterative process, and we might reasonably expect that after more than a century of mining during an era of sustained technological development, (following a millenium or two of unrelieved hard physical graft), that the more obvious physical hazards could by now be competently managed. It is perhaps a reflection on the perversity of human nature that we have not fully learned our lessons in this exacting environment, and that worse, we have still too often failed to profit by the experience of those lessons. The more obvious underlying factors which impact on this situation are examined briefly, as a prelude to consideration of some outstanding examples of recurrent problems experienced in recent years. Reasons for the continued existence of sub-standard practices are outlined, with a focus on the human element, and finally proposals for appropriate remedial strategies are summarised. This paper therefore seeks to examine and discuss some of our deficiences and to suggest some directions for the way ahead.

The Water Board has been involved in the development and ipgrading of sewerage facilities in the Blue Mountains since 1980. In 1984 the Board prepared a report that dealt with the Blue Mountains Sewage Effluent Management study. Successive 3ovemments have been concerned about development in the 3lue Mountains and the effect this development is having on the luality of the streams flowing into the Blue Mountains National ?ark (presently up for World Heritage Listing).

The problem of long-term open pit mine planning is a large combinatorial problem, which canÆt be solved easily by mathematical programming models because of the large problem size. In this paper a new metaheuristic algorithm, which has been developed based on the ant colony optimisation (ACO) and its efficiency, have been discussed. To apply the ACO process to a mine planning problem, a series of variables is considered for each block as the pheromone trails that represent the desirability of the block for being the deepest point of the mine in that column for the given mining period. During implementation several mine schedules are constructed in each iteration. Then the pheromone values of all blocks are reduced to a certain percentage and additionally the pheromone value of those blocks that are used in defining the constructed schedules are increased according to the quality of the generated solutions. By repeated iterations, the pheromone values of those blocks that define the shape of the optimum solution are increased, whereas those of the others have been significantly evaporated. By using this algorithm a high degree of complexities could be considered in objective function and constraints of optimisation model. In addition it can improve the value of the initial mining schedule up to 34 per cent for some cases in a reasonable computational time.

At Pasminco Mining's South concentrator. which was commissioned in 1952. an expansion. modernisation and efficiency improvement program commenced in 1986 with a coarse ore stockpile and grinding circuit expansion. the replacement of small flotation cells and the upgrading of reagent mixing and metering equipment. The program continued with the installation of a TDC 3000 based process control system (1988) and concentrate thickeners (1990). By mid-1991 a further grinding expansion and the installation of zinc flotation feed regrind ball mills and zinc recleaner column cells will be complete. leaving the use of ceramic disc fillers and development of process control strategies as probably the remaining major avenues for improved process efficiency at present.

An intensive safety campaign at Mount Isa Mines Limited from 1956 to 1966 saw the lost time accident frequency rate fall to half its original level. A review of the safety programme was carried out in 1967 and in 1968 the Five Point Safety System was introduced. The seven years since its introduction have been years of significant achievement both in production and safety. Improving safety is a fundamental part of Mount Isa Mines Limited's policy and this system has been a major tool in implementing that policy. To be successful personnel need to be prepared and trained for its introduction and subsequently counselled on its use. A carefully prepared programme is required to phase in various aspects of the system and to make use of complementary steps. The system has been a success and it is anticipated that the continued drive to improve the use of principles of the system will further improve safety. It is hoped that this paper will be of value to those personnel concerned with industrial safety in Australia.

Prospecting in arid terrain can produce substantial environmental impacts, comparable to or greater in magnitude than the impacts associated with actual mining or petroleum production. Impacts are likely to be particularly severe where prospecting involves intensive geophysical exploration, especially in areas which have escaped degradation by other land uses such as pastoralism. With appropriate environmental planning and management, however, the environmental impacts of prospecting in arid terrain can be greatly reduced and mitigated, at low cost. In many countries, prospecting licences, exploration leases and associated tenements now carry a range of conditions relating to environmental protection. The assessment, avoidance and mitigation of environmental impacts is therefore an important component of and-zone exploration. My aim here is to give an overview of some of the main aspects of an environmental planning and management (EPM) programme for prospecting in arid terrain (PAT). Detailed operational prescriptions for environmental protection procedures are necessarily specific to particular areas and types of prospecting: see. e.g., Buckley (1982a, 1984, 1985a, 1986a), Klepacki et al. (1985) and Stone (1986). The intention here is to provide a checklist rather than a recipe book: as an aid in incorporating environmental aspects into the overall planning and management of an exploration programme, and in liaison with company environmental staff, consultants and regulatory bodies. I also hope to show that whilst some of the techniques used in particular environmental disciplines certainly require specialist expertise, the overall design of an EPM programme is not in the least esoteric, but simply an exercise in straightforward common sense. Perhaps this paper could be subtitled: "Demystifying environmental Planning".

BHP Billiton’s Area C iron ore operation has been in production since 2003. During 2010, below water table mining in the Marra Mamba formation commenced and dewatered ore has been successfully processed through the plant.The ability to mine below water table material increases reserves. Pits can be dewatered using a combination of ex-pit and in-pit bores. Critically it is important to allow suffi cient lead time to dewater. For Area C, in-pit bores yield the most water which presents challenges in every day operations when mining around bores. Operationally there are steep learning curves in obtaining equipment, training personnel and setting up infrastructure. Core risks include lifting, refuelling and maintaining gensets. The pipework, extraction and re-establishment work can be very manual.The challenges include blasting, mining, stockpiling, processing, water balance and disposal. Maximising up time on bores whilst minimising impacts to blast practices have evolved. Blast practices now align bores to the edge of patterns. Protecting bores have evolved from stemming bores with rock and re-drilling to using gas bags which require no drills. Based on moisture and material properties, mining of dewatered material can be categorised into three groups:1. normal,2. sheeting, and3. sheeting and top loading.Ore can go straight to the plant ore to drying pads where it takes between one and three months to drain.Stock management of these piles is important to ensure efficiency of the plant. Rules have been established for blending wet material to maintain feed capacity and some modifications to plants have been made. Dewatering of pits poses a challenge for water use. Initially turkey’s nests were established to capture water and use for dust suppression. As water abstraction has increased methods of management include using exhausted pits for storage and evaporators. Managed Aquifer recharge and use in potable water are being considered. An over arching coordination of the capacity and use are required.Important elements in dewatering include:• capacity models,• capital,• long to short planning,• day to day coordination, and • water level monitoring and balances. A two-stage stochastic mixed integer non-linear program is formulated for a mining complex to optimise strategic and tactical plans. The objective is to find the near optimal decisions for a mineral supply chain in the context with uncertainties in both ore supply and the commodity market (price and demand). The endogenous spot price in the commodity market and long-term sales contracts are considered in the formulation of the mining complex’s optimisation model and an ad hoc heuristic is developed to deal with the throughput – and head-grade-dependent recovery rate in processing plants. Numerical results indicate that the proposed heuristic is effective and efficient in numerical tests. Based on the proposed model and heuristic, a long-term contract design strategy is proposed for making decisions on the contract price and strategic investments. MIM Holdings Limited (MIM) committed to a long-term future in copper in the Carpentaria Mineral Province in 1996 with the development of the Enterprise and Ernest Henry mines, and an upgrade of MIMsÆ copper smelter in Mount Isa, and copper refinery in Townsville. The upgrade of the copper smelter will enable the smelter to produce 250 000 tpa of copper with a single primary smelting unit, the copper Isasmelt furnace installed in 1992. The copper Isasmelt furnace currently smelts concentrate containing 145 000 tpa copper. To reduce the risk associated with the copper smelter upgrade, and shorten the ramp up time of the upgraded smelter, two high-rate trials were undertaken in 1997 to demonstrate that the copper Isasmelt furnace could, with an additional 525 tpd of tonnage oxygen, treat concentrates containing 250 000 tpa copper. During the trials the concentrate feed rate to the Isasmelt furnace was increased from its average rate of 100 tph of concentrate to 150 tph of concentrate. The increase in the capacity of the furnace was achieved by: supplementing the installed tonnage oxygen capacity of 595 tpd with an additional 300 tpd supply; reducing variability in the furnace feed rate from ¦25 per cent to less than ¦5 per cent; and reducing tramp air. The Isasmelt furnace smelted concentrate at a rate of 140 to 150 tph for four hours 25 minutes during Trial 1, and at a rate of 150 tph of concentrate for five hours and 30 minutes during Trial 2. The oxygen utilisation was 100 per cent during the trials with the process remaining under control. As a result of the development work for the trials the average treatment rate of the furnace under normal conditions increased by ten per cent.

Uncertainty and debate currently pervade the mining industry in New Zealand. The operational uncertainties, whether external (eg gold prices, the exchange rate), or internal (eg coal expansion difficulties), are large. In addition, many wider factors which influence mining are in a state of flux. State Coal Mines, the operating branch of the Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy I may be made a state corporation, with the remaining Mines Division functions being revamped. The agencies administering environmental legislation are to be restructured. Mining legislation amendments have been proposed and then dropped, and the area is now to be reviewed (The Press, 31 July 1985). Some mining licences have been withdrawn, and become the subject of heated debate in the community (The Press, 19 July 1985, and subsequent letters to the editor).

Ventilation characteristics of a three h -nc longwall development panel in a 1/100th tale hydraulic model using dispersion mechanics are the first applications of its Find in ventilation. Dispersion mechanics gives additional and important ventilation parameters such as degree of mixing, bypassing, -ecirculation etc. These are not obtainable the traditional pressure-volume methods. Experimentally, the model work investigates entilation characteristics of different stopping layouts, including leaky stopping,, cut-throughs and return roadway, brattice tyre ventilation and the effects of flow rate reduction on air distribution in the headings. Additionally, a model of methane generation at the face provides results used to calculate the dispersion characteristics in the return airways. It is concluded that the model resui,s -trongly suggest that dispersion mechanics could be applied to mine ventilation surveys to provide quantitative flow pattern data and details of effective dispersion '?_C!,r riro ò `b' eritilat.ing air.

Pre-Miocene igneous rocks from the Phili pine island arc are characterised by 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd ratios typical for intra-oceanic island arcs where sediment involvement in the magma genesis was minor. Lead isotopic ratios are similar to Indian Ocean MORB (Mukasa et al., 1986a,b). Pliocene to recent volcanics, however, have more radiogenic Sr and Pb and less radiogenic Nd, except for the volcanics of the Bicol Arc, which have similar isotopic signatures as the Pre-Miocene rocks. We suggest that Pre-Miocene magmas and Bicol-Arc magmas have been generated in response to the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate, their isotopic characteristics reflecting the composition of Philippine Sea crust. The Bataan arc magmas may reflect the larger amounts of sediments available for subduction in the South China Sea, while magmas of the Mindoro Arc, which are characterised by the most radiogenic Sr and least radiogenic Nd, may have been contaminated by slivers of the Mindoro-North Palawan terrane, which have been carried down to mantle depths after the collision of this terrane and the Philippine arc in Miocene (McCabe et al., 1982). This interpretation implies that Nd (and by inference other REE) can migrate from the subducted slab to the mantle wedge. Thus, variable Nd-isotopic ratios in island arc magmas (e.g. Sunda, Lesser Antillas) may not he a primary feature of the mantle wedge but a consequence of the release of Nd from the subducted slab.

Mining is inherently a risk-based business and risk governance is an integral part of corporate assurance and business decision-making. Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves are the key assets for a minerals company and senior management/company boards require assurance regarding the likely accuracy of estimated and reported technical information. Reviews and audits improve the level of assurance in the reliability of estimated short-term (grade control) estimates, reconciliation, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves.Peer reviews and audits contribute not only to governance processes, but also provide valuable technical improvement opportunities, as well as mentoring and professional development guidance to those whose work is being reviewed. Technical review is particularly crucial at a time in the industry when companies are running lean or perhaps inexperienced teams, with limited technical or management oversight.Despite both industry guidance and some companies’ standards expecting or requiring reviews and/or audits of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve generation and reporting processes, it is surprising how infrequently or ineffectively these are actually carried out. Examples of governance systems are presented, which include appropriate peer review processes that if effectively applied, can identify shortcomings in technical processes and provide timely correction to prevent, or mitigate against, erroneous outcomes.Peer reviews are ideally carried out concurrently with the preparation of data, selection of estimation procedures and validation of outputs from Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation prior to the handover of results between disciplines, or the final reporting of results. Audits, on the other hand, are generally retrospective reviews by independent and/or external reviewers who rate the risks inherent with an already completed process, identifying opportunities for improvements in the future.This paper outlines the main components of peer reviews and audits, discussing how a combination of these can provide a structured and objective assurance system leading to systematic and disciplined processes to improve the effectiveness of, and confidence in, grade control, reconciliation, Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve risk management, and support good governance.CITATION:Noppé, M A, 2017. International mineral disclosure standards and guidelines aligned with the CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards) template were developed to inform stakeholders about the relative accuracy and confidence levels of publicly reported information and to support investment decisions, particularly when advancing projects through different development stages. The traditional stages range from early to advanced exploration, through pre-development (with Mineral Resources and pre-feasibility and/or feasibility levels of study) before the final development stages, where a decision to proceed with construction or production (or both) is made. The traditional definition of Mineral Resource and Ore/Mineral Reserve classification categories and techno-economic study levels (including Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA), Scoping Study (SS), Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and Feasibility Study (FS)) were defined with pre-development project assessment in mind. As such, these definitions are not necessarily well aligned to the reporting structures required by operating mines which need to consider a range of timelines spanning short to long-term operating conditions. However, the same terminology and definitions are used, or expected to be used, by both project developers and mine operators when reporting resources, reserves and techno-economic study outcomes. This paper discusses how various stakeholders in the minerals industry (including competent/qualified persons, mining company leaders, investors, lenders and regulators), generally interpret the definitions of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve categories in terms of the relative accuracy of the estimates, their link to techno-economic study levels and their contribution to life-of-mine (LOM) schedules. The paper examines the degree to which mining companies recognise, and apply, enhanced operational knowledge to reflect short-term views of the relative accuracy and confidence levels associated with publicly reported Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates and forecasts. Furthermore, this paper explores how this knowledge is applied to support ongoing Mineral Resource, and particularly Ore Reserve, generation and reporting. This paper is informed by public data and responses to an internal survey prepared by the authors and completed in 2021 by several mining companies.

A high-nugget effect and presence of coarse gold characterises many styles of gold mineralisation. The effective sampling of these deposits is often difficult because of the relatively low concentrations involved and erratic nature of the gold or other minerals. Geometric and/or metallurgical complexities often compound this effect. Underground development, in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining are generally required to delineate Ore Reserves. Similarly expensive definition strategies often apply to surface mining in complex orebodies of gold and other minerals, including precious stones. Development, particularly winzing is a historical technique that was used to gather geological, grade and metallurgical data during underground and near-surface exploration. It permits access to the mineralised structure below the surface datum to determine viability. Winzing has always been considered an arduous and dangerous task. Modern winzing technology has led to the development of the Mobile Supersucker – essentially a giant vacuum cleaner with underground and surface capabilities. By the elimination of shovel-loaded blasted winze material into a kibble and hoisting, this system permits safe and highly efficient winzing activities, and allows the collection of bulk samples for grade and metallurgical evaluation, as well as access to the mineralisation for geological and geotechnical mapping. Bulk samples from horizontal development have long been collected to help define mineable grade via pilot processing. However, when defining blocks below current development, there has been over-reliance on ineffective ‘small sample’ drill data. The Mobile Supersucker permits the development of winzes and off-winze sub-levels. These provide critical information to a mine technical team when trying to justify capital to go deeper or commence or deepen an existing open pit. CITATION: Biegaj, K and Dominy, S C, 2018. The author describes 1. The classification and characteristics of various thick seam mining techniques in various Japanese coal mines. 2. Practices of thick seam mining methods experienced in Taiheiyo Coal Mine. Currently, thick single lift, simultaneous multi lift and non simul- taneous multi lift mining methods are adopted as underground flat thick seam excavations in Japan. These are now reliable and effective in increasing the extraction ratio. At Kushiro Colliery of Taiheiyo Coal Mining Co., these three thick seam mining methods have been used. According to the results, if solidification of the top lift goaf is essential, the non simul- taneous multi lift mining method is the most effective in increasing the extraction ratio without minimising productivity of each lift and it points out that further development of this method is necessary.

Having successfully applied computer techniques to open pit mining applications, many software developers are now using their skills to tackle the much harder areas of underground mine design, planning and production.Dramatic improvements in the performance to price ratio of hardware (including high resolution graphics screens), a better understanding of the techniques of surface and solids modelling (and their subsequent display), moves towards standard user interfaces and advanced concepts of representing grade distribution in the ore body have all contributed to the recent increase in underground mining software activity.This paper details the general requirements of a workable underground mining software system, providing a minimum checklist of desirable features and emphasises the importance of ease of use, flexibility and intuitive feel. Some relevant trends in hardware, software and application techniques are highlighted and comments made on areas which require further development or are only available in a small number of packages.Finally, a comment is made on the role of computer models to provide a unifying medium for tying together all aspects of underground design, planning and production.

The history of gold dredging in New Zealand, leading to the develop- ment of the `New Zealand Type' dredge is considered. Much of this infor- mation has come from contemporaneous publications by the New Zealand Department of Mines. Alluvial gold production declined after 1902, and ceased completely in 1982, but is now rising again. The progress of the New Zealand alluvial gold mining industry is considered, together with some of its more exceptional successes. Recent developments are com- pared to those of the past.

The problem of metering fine particulate material at low flowrate is often encountered in metallurgical experiment. This note describes a feeder which wa developed to provide metered flows of copper sulphide concentrate in the range of 0'1-0'7 g/min.It is believed that the present device is easier to operate than previously described feeders (e.g. Hamor and Smith, 1971). It may have applications in the field of analytical chemistry, as well as in metallurgical investigations.
