A longwall coal mine in southwestern Virginia mining the Pocahontas #3 Coal Seam experienced a history of mining-related seismic events. The events were never large enough to cause concern until three major events occurred recording 3.4, 4.3, and 3.4 ML in 2005, 2006, and 2007 respectively. Two of the seismic events generated an air blast which damaged stoppings which fueled a mine fire in 2005 and 2007. The mine responded to the events by narrowing the longwall widths, changing ventilation controls, installing a 7-sensor seismic system around the active panel, and creating a mining hazard map to avoid similar geology in the future. All of the actions taken have prevented seismic activity from impacting mining operations, but it did not prevent other large seismic events from occurring (Van Dyke et al., 2018). In 2016, another large seismic event, measured at 3.7 ML, occurred in the gob that was reported by the local media and recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). While the event did not directly impact mining operations, mine management wanted to know where and under what conditions could large seismic events occur in the future. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) became involved to help understand what conditions precipitated these events so that future mine design could more accurately assess seismic hazards and reduce the risk to mine worker safety. Researchers at NIOSH and mine management created a seismic forecasting map that combined three factors: (1) overburden thickness, (2) sandstone thickness, and (3) the expected caving height of the gob. The criteria were developed based on the geologic data the mine collected from core drilling, e-log analysis, and fiberscope observations. The forecast map was able to provide an accuracy of 72%–85% of events 1.5 ML or greater and 100% accuracy of events that were 3.0 ML or greater based on historical data. The seismic forecasting map was applied to the entire future mining area to show areas where seismic potential could be the greatest based on current mine design planning, ultimately improving the ability of the mine operator to assess the seismic hazards surrounding active and future mining areas (Van Dyke et al. 2018). Following this research, the seismic forecasting map was implemented into the mine’s hazard recognition program and is continuously updated and evaluated prior to mining each longwall panel. This paper will cover in more detail how the seismic and lithologic data was processed and how the mine implemented a new seismic mitigation program based on the forecasting results.

"Sustainability is a concept that involves several aspects like social, economy and environment. For the concept of sustainable mining is an action that involves to do more in social acceptance, distribution of welfare, an stable economy and the environment. Understanding the mining operation that creates a new state that is necessary to prepare and conduct searching for the best results in sustainability. The results of sustainable mining could be directed to achieve less net environmental impacts, more economic development through the transformation of the natural capital and the social acceptance as the result of good negotiations with the communities in the surroundings. To do that, one option is to create frameworks to planning the regional mining developments that allows the stakeholders to decide and develop different strategies to addresses the sustainability in a mining environment. Strategies based on the understanding of the whole mining business, the environment in which it operates, composed for a natural resources network that interact in a complex system, social system composed by different groups, communities and economies that could be subject to big transformations. INTRODUCTION The mining sector represents one of the most significant challenges for sustainable development, given the magnitude of the impacts that it has on the social and natural systems and the potential to generate welfare associated with its exploitation. Some of the main challenges of mining to contribute to sustainable development are the reduction of the environmental and social impacts of mining operations, to advance in the distribution of benefits in the community and the investing in the development of substitutes. To help in this direction it is necessary to integrate more actors than those who have been considered traditionally in the development of the mining business, and consider the natural environment, communities and the several dynamics generated by the interaction of these elements that contribute to sustainable development. This work provides some useful considerations for sustainable development of mining operations in regions with mining vocation, through the convergence of objectives and the finding of synergies between the existing conditions in the territories and the potential conditions that are generated by new mining developments. A DEFINITION FOR SUSTAINABILITY IN MINING The definition of the Brundtland Commission in 1987 established that sustainable development is ""the ability to ensure that it meets the needs of the present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs""."

"This paper will share my ‘shift in career direction’ journey from corporate mine engineer, with 31 years of mining various commodities with a wide range of responsibilities in a variety of countries, to the world of academia. There are times in one’s career that a change is required, albeit perhaps not as drastic of a change as moving to teaching. This paper will share how the transition arose, the decision to make the change, the challenges of the first year in academia, and the journey within academia going into the second year. INTRODUCTION As a graduate of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology (Montana Tech) with a B.S. Mining Engineering degree in May of 1982, my first job with Utah International in the Farmington area took me back to my home state of New Mexico. Some of you will remember that the early 1980’s was not a period of prolific opportunities for mining engineers; given low commodity prices, especially for copper (for example, Anaconda Company had been taken over by Arco and was in the midst of closing down its Butte operations). Coal was good and the learning opportunities abounded with Utah (which became BHP and then BHP Billiton). Gold was taking off in the mid to late 1980’s thanks to use of cyanide and heap leaching technology improvements, coupled with deregulation of the gold price, so I ventured off to work in the gold industry with a (then) junior Canadian company called Barrick at a new acquisition of theirs known as Goldstrike. That same gold surge was causing a shortage of iron ore mining engineers in Australia so after a few years in Nevada, I uprooted the family and left for a little town in the Pilbara of West Australia, known as Newman, to work in the iron ore industry with BHP Iron Ore. An initial short overseas posting turned into six plus years before transferring to BHP’s Indonesian steam coal mines in Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. BHP was going through a rough period following some ill-fated projects (Magma copper purchase, Beanup and HBI) and was reviewing assets and staffing so internal opportunities became scarce. Employees were encouraged to ‘leave the company and find work elsewhere.’ So, off I go to Argentina to try copper mining in the Andes with Minera Alumbrera. This short stint in South America was followed by a move to another mining town, Morenci, Arizona, and a posting with Phelps Dodge (now Freeport McMoran). After 12+ years without living close to snow we moved to the Denver area in a new position with Newmont Mining Corporation. Along the way I became a Professional Engineer (Nevada) and completed a Masters in Project Engineering and Management. After 11 years with Newmont, I moved to Butte, Montana where I accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Mining Engineering."

Mount Isa Mine should be regarded as a large mining complex rather than one mine. This arises from the geography, variety and extent of the orebodies, the mining methods, and the use of 14 shafts for ventilation distribution. A brief resume is presented here since comprehensive descriptions of lead-zinc mining methods {11}, copper mining methods {2 }{3}, geology 241, stope fill {5} and ventilation techniques {6}{7}, have all been published in the last five years. Mining extends over a north-south strike length of 2.5 miles (4 Ian) with a maximum width across dip approaching 3 200 ft (1 Ian). Current mining is to a depth of 3 150 ft (960 m) with the ore hoisting shafts extending 660 ft (200 m) deeper. The composite longitudinal section, Figure 1, shows a representational disposition of the copper and lead-zinc-silver orebodies in the central shaft complex where the main service and hoisting shafts are located. To the south the X41 man and materials shaft provides access to the copper area. The mine layout is typical of high tonnage track- less mines, utilising a large diesel fleet, raise- borers and some large diameter hole stope drilling. Mining methods include sublevel open stoping, slot and massfire, and a trial vertical crater retreat in the copper ore, and sublevel caving, sublevel open stopes with and without rib pillar recovery, and mechanised cut and fill in the numerous lead orebodies. All ore reports to one of the three crushing systems located below 19 level in the central shaft complex. Copper ore is hauled exclusively along the 19 level computer assisted Rockflo haulage system, and lead-zinc-silver ores report via central orepasses from Granby haulages on 13 level and 15 level. Tonnages hoisted during the 1977178 financial year were 5.0 million for copper at 3.2%. and 2.3 million for lead-zinc-silver at 7.8%. 6.3% and 7.06 oz/ton (216 g/tonne) respectively.

With passage of the Federal coal' Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, many challenges have been directed to the industry's mining and safety engineers. The most critical challenge is that of ventilation. The language concerning ventilation in many sections of the Act could very well deprive or limit the mining engineer in planning the ventilation for new mines, since the Act requires federal approval of all ventilation plans. Dependent upon approval and of course application of the law, this could, due to economics, prohibit the opening of new mines in some cases. Petitions for modification of some mandatory standards relating to ventilation have already been filed under Section 301(c). It is quite possible that many of these standards may be modified.

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a series of laboratory tests to investigate the effectiveness of using a flooded-bed scrubber with exhaust ventilation in deep-cut faces. An experimental test program to determine the impact on respirable dust levels resulting from changes in face airflow, curtain-setback distance, operator positioning and operating parameters of the external spray system on the miner was completed. Gravimetric sampling was conducted in the immediate return and at three sampling locations on the off-curtain side of the entry. Statistically significant differences in dust levels, on the order of 0.5 to 1.2 mg/m3, were observed between specific sampling locations and changes in several test parameters. Dust sampling results indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber and exhaust ventilation can be a viable dust-control system for extracting deep cuts up to 12.2 m (40 ft) in length. The impact on methane was not evaluated.

Mining activities have recently been taken place in Vourinos mountain, northern Greece, exploiting the so-called ?olivinite?. A representative sample was collected from this mining area. Mineralogical analysis was conducted using X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD). A thin section was prepared and analyzed under optical microscope. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) was employed for the chemical analyses of major, mi-nor and trace elements. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis system (ESEM-EDX) was also applied for the characterization of the sample. Forsterite (Mg-rich olivine) and enstatite (Mg-rich orthopyroxene) were the main mineral phases determined by XRD, with a 56% and 44% content respectively. Trace amounts of chromite spinels were also determined. Based on this characterization, the industrial rock proved to be a hartzburgite (a type of peridotite in petrological terms). Optical microscopy and ESEM-EDX provided similar observations and confirmed the above-mentioned results. XRF revealed a composition of 43.31 MgO, 44.25 SiO2, 9.98 Fe2O3, 1.40 CaO, 0.67 Al2O3, 0.22 MnO, 0.01 TiO2 and negligible amount of LOI (<0.1%). Trace elements with high concentrations were Cr (2678 ppm) and Ni (2044 ppm). The comprehensive characterization of this mining product suggested the suitability for various uses, such as refractories, foundry and slag conditioner. Additional experiments are being carried out for environmental applications, e.g. wastewater treatment.

In April, the US Synthetic Fuels Corp. broke a three-year silence and made its first financial award by approving a $820,750 loan for the First Colony peat-to-methanol project in North Carolina (ME, May, page 403). Peat Methanol Associates (PMA), a partnership between Koppers Co., ETCO Methanol Inc., Transco, Peat Methanol Co., and l. B. Sunderland, broke ground at First Colony last year and plans to begin production in Dec. 1985. Although the award is only a small part of Synthetic Fuels Corp.&apos;s $15-billion budget, it does signal the corporation&apos;s intention to move aggressively ahead. It also is a positive indication that First Colony will be completed and operated successfully. This article describes the methods and equipment that will be used to harvest peat at First Colony, as well as how the peat will be converted to methanol. Introduction Peat deposits found along North Carolina&apos;s coastal plain contain high-quality fuel-grade peat with an average heating value of more than 23.3 MJ/kg (10,000 Btu/lb) (dry), with a low sulfur and ash content. The deposits differ from other US peats in that they contain large, sound Atlantic White Cedar and Cypress logs, stumps, and roots that may extend throughout the full depth of the deposit. A second difference is that these deposits are much more highly decomposed and, in the raw state, have the appearance and feel of a heavy, reddish-brown grease. These factors make it impractical to use standard production equipment so a new line was developed. Also, because of these conditions, techniques were modified to facilitate production. First Colony Farms, located near Creswell, NC, developed and evaluated a milled peat program. Equipment for this production method was designed and built, production rates were established from field operations, drying rates were established, weather data were analyzed, and total operating and capital costs were estimated. The method depends on the sun and wind for drying peat to the desired moisture content, in this case around 40%. Therefore, field preparation is actually the construction of a large solar collector to dry the peat so it can be harvested and stockpiled. It is essential that this collector be properly profiled initially and maintained during production to prevent precipitation from ponding. Initial Field Preparation Initial field preparation includes cleaning existing canals and constructing ditches and water control structures for proper drainage of rainwater run-off, building adequate roads for site access, removing surface vegetation, and profiling and sloping the fields. At First Colony, the 60.7-km2 (15,000-acre) harvesting area was divided into 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) blocks about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and 805 m (0.5 mile) wide. This was accomplished by cleaning main outfall canals with adjacent roads built from canal spoil at 1.6-km (1-mile) intervals. Existing intermediate canals that feed into main outfall canals at 805-m (0.5-mile) intervals also are cleaned. Headland roads are constructed from canal spoil along each side of each intermediate canal. This 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) block is then divided into 32 harvest strips by small V-ditches constructed at 50-m (165-ft) intervals. At the end of the field with the lowest elevation, corrugated steel pipe culverts are installed under the headland road in each V-ditch to control rainwater runoff into intermediate canals. Runoff water from the fields is diverted to a holding pond to prevent any increase in peak water runoff rates and to allow for more uniform drainage rate than experienced to date. After the drainage system is installed, harvest strips are ready for grinding and sloping operations. Surface vegetation, made up of small, waxy-leafed shrubs such as Gallberry, Bayberry, Magnolia, and scattered pond pine, can be effectively ground and incorporated into the upper surface of the peat layer. Here, it will rapidly decompose and have little effect on overall peat quality, thus eliminating the standard practice of pushing the vegetation and upper wood layer into long windrows with bulldozers and hauling this debris from the fields. Incorporating vegetation into the upper surface is known as the initial 102-mm (4-in.) surface vegetation grind and is accomplished by using a modified Bros Rota Mixer. Following this operation, and by using the same unit, a sec¬ond grind with a depth of 200-255 mm (8-10 in.) is made. This reduces the debris to a finer consistency, mixes it with the upper peat layer, and grinds any wood found in the upper 200-255 mm (8-10 in.). In 1971, during the planning and design stages of a $300 million expansion, the Iron Ore Company of Canada Ltd. through its Engineers, Canadian Bechtel Ltd., came out with a preliminary request for two (2) 10,000 LTPH belt conveyor scale systems. These Systems were to provide weighing accuracies within 2.5% of the iron ore pellets and concentrates in transit on two (2) 72" wide conveyors from the stockpiles to the ships. Each conveyor system would be fed by a rail mounted bucket wheel reclaimer, with the conveyed material moving directly to the ship loaders with no inter- mediate surge and/or storage bins between the stockpiles and the ships. The bucket wheel reclaimer discharge rates would vary from 0-9600 LTPH in cyclic periods, with the periods varying from 1-5 minutes - dependent on the level of the reclaim buckets in relation to the stockpile as well as the slewing rate of the reclaimer. There would be frequent interruptions for bucket wheel repositioning (laterally and vertically), changing ship holds, and trimming ship holds. These frequent zero flow conditions, approximately 500 per 150,000 ton ship, could last 1-5 minutes. In addition, the conveyors on which the scales were to be mounted would be over the water and subject to the wind and cold of Northern Quebec. These Systems would be in use 350 working days of the year and would load 30,000,000 LT/yr. (An average of 90,000/working day).

Mineral policy in Canada has been in a state of transition and change over the past several years. 1976 has witnessed some settling of troubled waters and the pattern of the currents of change is becoming more clear. The provinces play a key role in this process and have provided much of the thrust for new initiatives. On the other hand, the federal government in Canada in recent years has taken a much more active interest in mineral affairs than previously and has asserted its powers on a number of key policy questions. Some of the initiatives from the two levels of government in Canada have come into conflict with each other and, thus, contributed materially to a state of affairs that includes change, uncertainty and conflict.

Under drastically deteriorated situations, diesel equipment was introduced to some of local coal mines, aiming at higher productivity and better safety. To accommodate various diesel equipment in conventionally developed mines, mining system itself had to be modified; much larger trackless haulage ways were excavated. Possible health hazards of diesel not taken into account at the beginning become a serious concern and effective control measures are being searched for. The purpose of this paper is to study the diffusion characteristics of diesel exhaust in local coal mines. One of the parameters affecting dispersion of diesel contaminants is the coefficient of turbulent diffusion. Since CO2 is known to be closely correlated with other contaminants such as CO, NO, NQ, SO2 and RCD, it was chosen as a tracer gas in a series of dispersion experiments. A large diesel passage as well as a conventional track haulage way were the sites for the experiments. Rectangular dispersion pulses were generated for 30 ~60 seconds and CO2 concentrations were recorded at several locations 50~190 m downwind. The diffusion coefficients calculated graphically vary between 0.10~0.48 m2/s at both haulage ways. The results are analyzed to find any correlation with the air velocity and the distance from the disperser. INTRODUCTION This method is a variation of cut-and-fill mining where either the wall rock or the vein is too unconsolidated to permit safe mining by conventional cut-and-fill methods. Basic development consists of driving a 2.4 x 2.7-m (8 x 9-ft) haulage heading laterally in the footwall side of the vein. Crosscuts are driven over to the vein at 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Then the vein, at each inter¬section, is mined out to a distance of about 9 m (30 ft ) above the track level. After the installation of an ore chute, scrams or intermediate drifts are driven in both directions along the vein. Mining then starts imme¬diately below the level bounding the upper limit of the stope. A cut varying between 3 and 4.2 m (10 and 14 ft) in depth and mined for a distance of 45.7 m (150 ft )along the strike is taken from the orepass in each direction (Fig. 1). In this mined-out void, the floor of the cut is equipped with 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) caps hitched into the wall with steel saddle hitches installed on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers. Double wood stringers, 152.4 x 152.4 mm (6 x 6 in.), are then installed on 1.2-m (4-ft) centers longitudinally down the length of the stope. Reinforc¬ing wire mesh is also placed, overlying each mat of timber. Directly above the stringers, stulls are installed from hanging wall to footwall to hold the timber in place during the sand-filling operation. Then a cement¬sand mixture in a ratio of about 1:10 weight is poured to a depth of about 2.4 m (8 ft). The entire cycle is then repeated down to the scram drift. Another variation of timbering is illustrated in Fig. 2. There is a vein width of approximately 5.5 m (18 ft) with the same unconsolidated ground conditions. The primary difference between handling this situation and the previously described undercut-and-fill method is that standard timbered sets are installed in each excavated stoping void rather than stulls. Once again the basic method is to work down the ore block from an upper timbered drift to a lower timbered drift. Cuts are taken from a timbered raise with a chute on the stope side. Each piece of ground excavated is essentially two sets high, 5.5 m (18 ft), by two sets wide, 5.5 m (18 ft), by the length of the cut along the strike of the vein. The timbered sets are 2.4 x 2.4 x 2.4 m (8 x 8 x 8 ft). The net result is, therefore, two sets of timber on a top floor separated by doubled-up 76-mm (3-in.) lagging from

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with an American firm, has been contributing toward the creation of a new highwall mining system for extracting coal in active, unreclaimed contour strip mines in the United States. The prototype system features the computer-based, remote control, video operation of a thin-seam continuous miner. Haulage is accomplished remotely also with a 76-m (250-ft) long multiple-unit continuous haulage (MUCH) conveyor system on rubber-tire vehicles. One aspect of this multi-faceted effort has been to design a ventilation system for removing dust generated at the face during the extraction process. The remote mining system eliminates the need for personnel in the mined workings. Ventilation is required to remove visible dust from the area inby two video cameras. These cameras are located approximately 6 m (20 ft) from the face, one on either side of a modified Jeffrey 102HP continuous miner. Removing the dust from this area provides the remote operator with constant visual monitoring of coal extraction at the face and thus, insures the effective operation of the mining system. A ventilation system was designed for use in a mine opening with a maximum cross-sectional area of roughly 4 sq m (44 sq ft) excluding the mining machinery. This paper describes the ventilation system and discusses how it was developed in view of the constraints imposed by the mining equipment, mining conditions, and the extraction process.

Lack of selectivity in mixed mineral flocculation can be attributed to one or more of the following factors: dissolved ion interference, heterocoagulation, mechanical entrapment in flocs and entrainment of fines between flocs. In a study of apatite- dolomite system, it was determined that dissolved ions do not have a significant effect on selectivity. Heterocoagulation was minimized by choosing proper process conditions and addition of a dispersant. Mechanical entrapment was proved to be insignificant and efforts were made to reduce entrainment by choosing an appropriate method of separation of flocs from fines. A new factor termed "polymer induced entrapment" which occurs due to limited affinity of the polymer to the mineral which is not flocculated is postulated to be the cause for the loss of selectivity.

In recent years the procedures for functionally designing bulk storage bins and hoppers have evolved from qualitative guess and try methods to a quantative method based on theory and tests of the bulk solid to be stored. This quantative method, developed and implemented by Dr.&apos;s A. W. Jenike and J. R. Johanson as with any new design, must prove its effectiveness and validity in the actual operation of the finished equipment. How accurate are the theoretical predictions? Is it possible to extrapolate from bench size tests on a small ample of the bulk solid to the full scale bin design? Can the theoretical designs be economically translated into working hardware? In this paper the answers to these questions are discussed in light of actual bin operations.

At this 5th U.S. Mine Ventilation Symposium I would like to focus your attention on safety and the contribution of the ventilation engineer over the past 50 years. This conference affords us the opportunity to express, to listen, and to learn. As ventilation engineers it is indeed an exciting time--a time that not only stimulates our imagination but also pin points our aims in our quest to obtain zero fatalities by the year 2000, the goal expressed by William J. Tattersall, Assistant Secretary of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration. In the past, coal mine ventilation has often been unfortunately synonymous with explosions and resulting fires. Those not familiar with us do not recognize the painful evolution of the coal mining industry and particularly the evolution of mine ventilation. To put my presentation into perspective, I recently reviewed a U.S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 586 - "Historical Summary of Coal-Mine Explosions in the United States 1810 - 1958 prepared by H. B. Humphrey Mining Health and Safety Engineer. This bulletin was published in 1960. Mr. Humphrey stated "In 1946, factors contributing to the explosions occurring from 1941 to 1945 were: (1) The rapid increase in the use of electrical equipment at face regions where gas and dust are most likely to be found; (2) the increased demand for coal with the desire to obtain maximum tonnage per machine at minimum cost, which in many mines has resulted in neglect of even rudimentary precautionary measures; (3) multiple-shift operation without provision of time for adequate maintenance of equipment, effective rock dusting, and testing for gas; (4) decrease in supervision owing to demands on supervisors for maximum tonnage and loss of competent supervisors to other employment; (5) lack of effective supervision, owing to numerous new conditions, some of them war-connected; (6) inability to obtain adequate equipment repair and replacement parts; (7) shortage of labor and inadequate training of coal-mine workers; and (8) failure of both miners and mining officials to show regard for safety in changing from hand-loading to mechanized methods". Most of the eight factors listed by Mr. Humphrey continue to affect our work lives as mining engineers. The increased demand for coal with the desire to obtain maximum tonnage per machine at minimum cost has never changed. The local and regionalized coal industry of the 40&apos;s is today competing against the world coal market. Our mines work or shut down based on cost. This has always been the case. During the five year time-frame Mr. Humphrey was documenting, 345 miners were killed in major explosions. A major explosion was one in which five or more miners were killed in a single accident. In addition, 105 more miners were killed in minor explosions for a total of 450. What a wanton waste of life. What fears, anxieties, miseries, and sufferings were created by these accidents. However, we must remember and keep in mind that the coal mining company officials, engineers, and foremen, the governmental agencies- federal, state, and local - were using the technical tools and knowledge available to operate the mines as safely as they could. This paper will explore the technology behind and applications of smart motor control centers (MCCs) being used today in mineral processing facilities. The two technologies to be discussed are solid-state motor controllers that can be installed in MCCs and the complementary digital communication networks that can transmit operational parameters of the solid-state devices to the supervisory system. The toughness and reliability of solid-state technologies have led to a dramatic increase in their usage throughout the mining industry. Products such as solid-state motor protectors, controllers, and variable frequency drives have demonstrated greater flexibility and performance in a variety of applications than their electromechanical and mechanical counterparts. The three key trends apparent in the solid-state devices are: 1. A shift to smaller, smarter, more integrated devices, which allows a single solid-state device to serve the purpose of multiple electromechanical devices but in a much smaller form factor. 2. Distribution of control logic in motor control devices rather than conveyed through a hard wired connection to a central automation system. 3. Embedded network communication that allows supervisory systems to have an expanded view into critical loads and sensors. In applications, the use of smart actuators and sensors with integral local intelligence and communication allow a supervisory controller to send high level commands and let the smart device coordinate its own work The ability of smart field devices to return noncontrolled, nonpoled information opens a whole array of new capabilities for preventive maintenance and diagnostics and forms the basis for an effective motor management program. The smart motor control devices this paper will explore are the smart motor protectors (SMP), smart motor controllers (SMC), and variable frequency drives (VFD).

Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use theirs in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 m (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two¬seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al.( 1990), surprisingly, does not give any geologi¬cal interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics. It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimen-

Electronic ore sorting has been in use for over 15 years at many mining operations worldwide. Photometric ore sorting, which operates on the basis of measuring light reflectance levels of a rock surface, is in use at various locations on ores such as limestone, magnesite, gold, talc, spodumene, tungsten and coal. Radiometric sorters have been employed on uranium deposits in the western U.S.A. as well as at certain South African go1 d mines where preconcentrating gold is achieved using uranium association as a detector. A new ore sorter, employing two sensing parameters has been developed. Utilizing both photometric and conductivity sensing modes, this system has application to many gold ore types of North America. The first production machine has been installed at a gold mine near Beardmore, Ontario for the purpose of preconcentrating ore both from waste dumps from past production as well as within the ongoing mining operation.

The Bellavista Gold Deposit lies 75 Kms north west of San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, Central America and 3 Kms north east of Miramar, in the Province of Puntarenas. The total road distance from San Jose to the deposit is 120 Kms all paved road except for a 2.5 Km graded, gravel road on the property (Figure 1). Infrastructure services in the Miramar-Puntarenas area are well developed with electrical power distribution, a modern port facility and community services being available. The deposit lies on the south west flank of the Tilaran Mountain Range between an elevation of 550 and 800 meters above sea level. The local topography is steep, originally covered with pre-montaine, tropical wet forest vegetation which has been largely destroyed due to clearing for cattle grazing. The annual rainfall is approximately 2,950 mms, 90% of which occurs between May and October.
