The inability to economically separate Fe3+(aq) from a variety of liquid effluents is a major Concern for the primary metals industry. A unique solvent extraction process, galvanic stripping, has been developed to address this problem. The galvanic stripping of iron from D2EHPA using only a 5~10 g/L H2SO4 solution is achieved after Fe3+ is directly reduced to Fee, in the organic phase using zinc metal additions. To date, the primary focus of the laboratory research has been on optimizing the parameters that control iron removal. The results from these studies have now been, used to make a preliminary design for a continuous flow process that is envisioned for zinc industrial applications. Specific quantitative data are shown for the use of a Zn-Ph cellos° in the iron-reams al process. Some introductory results on electrochemical potential measurements and impurity distribution with solution cycling are also giiven.

Up to now, the hands-on approach to construction has been stressed. This chapter reviews the basic tools available for construction design and monitoring of a construction project. It is divided into three discussions, all under the general title of computer aids, since the trend for using these tools-is via the computer. In the context of our discussions, the focus for computer aids will be on the use of evaluation and analysis techniques for coal mine construction applications, including mainframe programs, CPM techniques, as well as mini and microcomputer applications. Although the presentation of material in this chapter may be detailed at times, by no means does it cover the entire field of computer applications for design or project scheduling and monitoring. It is only an attempt to illustrate the possibilities that are available to construction and mine engineers. Interested persons can pursue computer applications for coal mining by reviewing Computer Methods for the 80's. by Alfred Weiss, editor, published by SME-AIME.

The conditioning of phosphate flotation feed with anionic flotation reagents was identified as a high- priority research topic during a beneficiation work- shop sponsored by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR). FIPR subsequently solicited research proposals to identify the mechanisms of reagent adsorption, to determine scale-up relationships for conditioner design, and to investigate the effect of conditioning variables on reagent adsorption and flotation performance. The two-year research project was awarded to Jacobs Engineering. Somasundaran, Inc., the University of Florida Mineral Resources Research Center, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines assisted Jacobs. Two mechanisms of anionic collector adsorption were detected by spectrographic analyses and confirmed by microcalorimetric measurements. The mechanisms provided a sound technical basis for the empirical practice of conditioning phosphate flotation feed at a high percent solids. Tests performed in laboratory and pilot-scale agitated tanks indicated that power intensity may be used as a reliable scale-up parameter for anionic conditioning of phosphate slurry. Excessive agitator speed during conditioning was found to be detrimental to anionic flotation performance. Some dimensional ratios of anionic conditioners were found to be consistent with good utilization of agitation energy. Laboratory conditioning and flotation tests demonstrated that adsorption of collector onto phosphate and the subsequent recovery of phosphate in anionic flotation were significantly influenced by the quantity and quality of water used in conditioning. Conversely, the quality of water used in flotation was more influential on the recovery of quartz in the concentrate. A comprehensive survey of anionic conditioners and conditioning practice in the Florida phosphate industry was also performed during this project. The study clearly showed that flotation testing with laboratory conditions typical of scientific research gives different results than laboratory testing with simulated plant conditions. The effects of test conditions on laboratory test results should be carefully considered by investigators planning and conducting applied research.

This paper presents the results of a recent study on the development of an in situ testing method for determining coal strength in mine pillars. The strength testing is performed in the horizontal holes drilled into the coal rib using a penetrometer, which is an hydraulically powered device that uses an indenter to press on the surface of the borehole until the load reaches the failure point of the coal. The pressure and the penetration of the loading pin are recorded by a data-acquisition unit. The results collected from several coal mines indicate that this testing method is ideally suited for the realistic coal strength measurements. The new testing system not only improves the accuracy of the pillar-strength determination, but it is more cost efficient than the conventional method.

Experimental designs are data acquisition plans which, if followed exactly, will quickly provide process engineers with information to assess statistically the individual and joint influence of factors on responses to permit of rapid decision making. Methodology employed to construct data acquisition plans is described in some detail. In production environments, factorial designs are appropriate for most purposes. Use of two level factorials to make decisions is described for a grinding circuit.

Ultrasonic anemometry is a relatively new method of measuring the air velocity in underground excavations and is not widely used. The method has been mainly used for surface applications, such as meteorology and fluid flow measurement. Several instruments were looked at to determine their applicability for continuous underground monitoring systems. The units fall into two main categories: variable distance units and fined distance units. The method relies on the acceleration and deceleration of ultrasonic pulses transmitted through a moving airstream. This study presents some of the results of the testing of variable and fixed distance ultrasonic anemometers in a wind tunnel and a mine drift.

The meaning of the title, "Blank Piece of Paper," refers to the need for management to take a completely fresh viewpoint to the problems facing our industry. These problems are so severe and some so new that conventional thinking may not be adequate to resolve them. Innovation has to be a part of every company's approach to the solutions, our concept is to start with a "Blank Piece of Paper.' The objective of 'this paper is to outline steps which can be taken to improve the profitability of a mining business. This is not an examination of technical solutions to individual problems, but rather recommendations for overall change in management thinking. This philosophy is based on our actual, hands-on experience in major open pit operations worldwide over the past 25 years.

The lining of a mine shaft is one of the most important considerations in the planning and operation of an underground mine. Generally, the function of a shaft lining is to preserve the shaft opening in a manner compatible with the expected mine life and -the other shaft operations. Where shafts are the only means of surface access in a mine, they also serve a critical function for the safety of the entire underground operation. Routine repairs and maintenance work on the shaft linings are only possible in stable strata with only minor interruptions to the shaft operations.

An article entitled "The Rule of the Geologist in the Industrial Mineral Field" by G. R. Gullet, was published in the August, 1967, issue of the Canadian Mining Journal. Mr. Gullet defined industrial minerals as follows: "Industrial minerals are largely non-metallic minerals and rocks that find value because of their physical or chemical properties." This definition is brief, but all-inclusive. Mr. Gullet continues, "They include all useful minerals and mineral commodities except those used as fuels and those from which metals are extracted. Factors in the evaluation of an industrial mineral deposit are generally as different from those used in the evaluation of a metal deposit as is the assessment of a potential oil field. The key to the successful development of an industrial mineral, deposit is more often a balance of accessibility, transport, and proximity to markets than to any natural quality advantage of the deposit itself."

Using computer applications to solve mining problems began in the early 1960s, utilizing the large (for that day) centralized computing facilities at a few universities and major mining company headquarters. Many years passed before technology was adequate to allow any of those applications to be run at the mine sites to provide immediately available solutions. One of the first mining applications attempted was for ore reserve analysis and long- to medium-range mine planning. As these are among the most frequent and familiar minicomputer applications at the mine site, it is interesting to follow the evolution of computing and communications hardware which has finally allowed effective transfer of this technology.

This paper describes the recent application of gasketed, precast concrete segmental lining design that has improved tunneling productivity and quality. The speci?c segment arrangement includes: six-piece ring with equal 60 degree gasketed segments, juxtaposed key and counter-key segments, trapezoidal and parallelogram shaped segments, inclined and skewed radial joints and plastic circumferential joint connectors. This allows rapid, but accurate ring erection, reducing mine cycle times. The design avoids cruciform joints, minimizes potential gasket damage and eliminates the need for separate left and right ring molds. The implementation on the Los Angeles ECIS and NEIS sewer projects is described.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, WMATA, has constructed over 92 revenue miles of rapid transit facilities including some 14 miles of rock tunnel and 12 miles of earth tunnel. The system map is shown in Figure 1. During construction it is not unusual for contractor to encounter ground conditions resulting in major problems and extra cost. Problems such as major rockfalls and a "stuck" boring machine in squeezing rock are not unusual. In recent years, faced with additional tunnel construction projects, the Authority has sought newer tunneling methods which might be less costly. One new method which has been tried is NATM, the New Austrian Tunnel¬ing Method. NATM, which is applicable to both soft ground, mixed face and rock tunneling, relies on miners and comparatively small machines to excavate in conventional ways, but it is unique in its methods of obtaining "stand-up" time at the excavated face and its method of using shotcrete as an initial lining, frequently with a drainage system to reduce hydro-static pressure on the final lining. Lower costs result from use of a cast-in-place concrete liner, and from a reduction in the number of work operations at the mine heading which provides better daily production. WMATA has recently completed three twin bore tunnels constructed by NATM technology. The first was the Wheaton Tunnel and Section, followed by the tail track tunnel to total some 4200 linear feet cut through jointed rock up to 270 feet below ground surface, and the last was in soft ground at Fort Totten. New mining health and safety training modalities are becoming increasingly prevalent in the underground mining industry. Various digital training tools have been developed over the past several years, but the extent of their use remains unclear. Advances in gamified training by way of computerbased video games and virtual reality (VR) have opened a new avenue for mine rescue and self-escape training, but these methods have not been widely adopted across the mining industry. Mine rescue and self-escape situations require a mix of in-classroom training as well as live drills, but it is important to assess the extent of and effectiveness of new training modalities. The Mine Rescue and Self-Escape Survey (MRSES) was distributed to underground mining operations to collect perceptions of current training effectiveness as well as willingness to adopt new training methods as a complement to live rescue drills. Responses from the MRSES indicate that adoption of digital training technologies has been slow-going despite an interest in their use. Further, there appears to be no meaningful connection between more frequent escape and rescue training and feelings of emergency preparedness. With relatively little use of already developed digital training tools but an interest in their adoption, it may be time to reassess current emergency preparedness training philosophies.

Mineral carbonation is the reaction of carbon dioxide with mineral silicates to form solid, carbonate compounds. The carbonate ion holds carbon in a low energy state – lower than in carbon dioxide. Thus the reaction of carbon dioxide to produce mineral carbonates captures the carbon in a stable, solid form. The University of Utah is investigating the carbonation of silicate minerals by mechanochemical processing, which has the potential of being much less expensive than other methods. Tests to date have shown that a marked change takes place in the lizardite variety of serpentine after 15 to 20 minutes of intense grinding in the presence of gaseous CO2. Further testing is in progress.

In designing a gold extraction circuit utilising carbon­in-pulp (CIP) technology a number of process options can be considered. These include various combinations of leach or pre-leach, CIP or carbon-in-leach (CIL) and conventional counter-current or carousel CIP (or CIL) circuits. Factors affecting the process selection include the project's sensitivity to capital and working costs, the project life, and the mineralogy and head grade. Each process option has it's own advantages and disadvantages. This paper compares both the financial and technical aspects of the flow sheet options. The flow sheet, design aspects and operating performance of Anglogold's West Wits No. 2 and 3 Plants which are leach, pump-cell circuits are described.

Accurate modeling of the semivariogram is an extremely important step in the geostatistical analysis of mineral deposits. Automatic fitting of a mathematical model is often possible but not necessarily desirable. Significant geologic and statistical information must be taken into account in the fitting process, which is not always available to the computer. Manual fitting of the model is, on the other hand, extremely time consuming. Interactive graphics are best suited to optimize the process. A number of interactive methods are described, which are adapted to the modeling of semivariograms in one-, two-, or three-dimensional environments.

In straight-talk fashion this paper sets forth fundamental differences between good project leaders and bad ones, on topics ranging from client relations, design management, and scheduling, to use of the whiteboard, and everything in between. Broadly applicable to all corners of project delivery, this paper will resonate with project leaders from around the world and help identify skills necessary to succeed in the management of underground facilities. A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS This is a training document, and not really a “paper” per se. We have attempted to tackle some big and potentially complex topics using bite-sized paragraphs, each of which are intended to promote thoughtful introspection and dialog. So please feel free to skip around, or even set this document down while you reflect on your own personal experiences, tactics, and philosophies. We have found that providing examples of “what not to do” is oftentimes more instructive than simply listing “what to do”, hence the Good/Bad format of this document. Reliable prediction of wall pressures in a coal silo demands careful characterization of the stress-strain properties of the coal. This paper describes the results of triaxial compression tests on a typical fine-ground coal used in power generation and describes the fitting of several different constitutive models to the data. The fitted parameters for the constitutive models are well suited to application infinite element analyses. The different models are used to give the reader flexibility in choosing a model and to show the shortcomings of some models. To explore the quality of the fitting process, the fitted results are compared with finite element predictions of the triaxial test itself.

1.1 Biological Process Description Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) has developed and in partnership with their clients in the mining industry has applied biological remediation processes for detoxification of spent ore and process solutions from heap leach operations. Contaminants that are treated to mine closure levels or drinking water standards include cyanides (weak acid dissociable and total cyanides), thiocyanate, nitrates and heavy metals. Biological processes are both site-specific and ore-specific processes. PSI specializes in isolating indigenous microorgan­isms from spent ore and process solutions and augments them in the laboratory for enhanced bio-detoxification in the field. Bioaugmentation in the lab is a key to successful heap bio-detox in the field. In PSI's bioaugmentation processes native microorganisms are isolated from the spent ore environment and are tested for contaminant remediation capacity. A majority of the indigenous microbes will be tolerant of the spent ore environment but will not contribute to contaminant metabolism. Indigenous enrichment or biostimulation of these non-working microbes by adding trace nutrients can competitively inhibit the working microbes. For this reason PSI focuses on the bioaugmentation process where non-working microbes are discarded and the working population is enhanced through stress, mutation and exogenous enrichment before it is re-introduced to the heap and process solutions.
