After some decades of lying low and being treated as a second rate fuel, coal is back in the news. Production is rising. Predictions are for an ever expanding use, and they differ only in their rates of increase. Even the FBI is involved in trying to stop fraudulent sales of non-existent coal lands and leases to the innocent. In short, we have a nearly chaotic boom on our hands. Obviously our energy production base is in the process of undergoing a major shift, and the process will present many problems. However, there is little doubt that the industry has the basic strength and organization to be able to deal with the new issues that will arise as a result of these shifts in production and use of coal. After all, it does produce nearly 800 M tpy now, and coal is the single biggest fuel for generation of electricity. This role of coal is illustrated in the table below, which shows the coal equivalent quantities of various fuels used in the production of electricity.

Following lip on a USBM-sponsored research project, the authors have utilized the knowledge-base structure and system concepts from the Sun Sparcstation-based worker scheduling system of the Mine Management Support System to develop a PC-based application. The new software adopts the nested-window concept to facilitate data collection and modification on personnel, their availability on a shift, and work priorities for a shift as well as to allocate manpower optimally on a work shift and delineate supervisory training responsibilities. The various components of the software are described in detail, along with enhancements made to the original system.

Mining is essentially a materials management process where materials are classified, excavated, moved to a desired location, processed at a cost and sold for a price hopefully to generate a profit. ?How much is that cost and can it be reduced?? is the age-old question. The requirement for a paradigm shift with regard to materials movement in search of low-cost production has not just happened by chance but, rather, has been driven by agents of change that include mining companies, consultants, governments and equipment suppliers. During the past 100 years of mining, surface mining technology has involved humans with hand tools, humans with machinery and unmanned automated equipment. In the past 50 years, surface mining technology has evolved and now takes the form of trucks and loaders (TL), in-pit-crushing conveying (IPCC) and autonomous haulage equipment (AHS).

Tool and cutterhead wear is a crucial issue in soft ground tunneling, especially because tool inspection, maintenance, and replacement are done under difficult conditions, and often under pressurized faces or under ?hyperbaric interventions?. Overall, tool inspection and changing is a time consuming and costly step, which needs to be quantified and the related costs accounted for in any construction contract for scheduling and costing of the tunnels at design stage or bid preparation. However, lack of a universally accepted index or measure for soil abrasivity in the geotechnical reports has made it difficult, if not impossible, to define cutter wear for this purpose. Soil abrasion and its impact on cutting tools for tunneling machines under dry or wet conditions have recently been under spot light due to construction claims in several of the recent tunneling projects. The objective of this paper is to examine soil?s physical, mechanical and tribological properties related to the interface of the soil and excavation tools and discuss ways to measure soil abrasivity in a quantitative and repeatable manner. The paper will discuss the efforts that are underway to develop a new soil abrasivity index and the fabrication of a new testing device for this purpose.

"70-foot deep rectangular-shaped bulkheads were built with sheet piles as launching and receiving shafts for a pipe jacking operation for new underground waterlines in a densely populated section of Los Angeles, California. The Press-in Piling Method was specified to drive 95-foot long sheets (a record for the method) to form the bulkheads for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s LA-29 (DWP) Connection Modification and Pipe Jacking. The piling was chosen because of its very low noise and practically vibration-free nature since the site is surrounded by houses, an apartment complex, and existing water lines. The out front areas of the bulkheads were grouted to let the TBM go through without major ground water leaks. Hydrophilic foam grout was also injected in addition to welding steel scab plates on the inside to seal them to achieve sufficient watertightness behind a few split interlocks. BACKGROUND This project was located in the Crescent Heights area of Los Angeles which is a few miles south of Beverly Hills. The project represents the completion of the last phase of the Stone Hollywood Trunk Line. This was an 8-mile long water trunk line that averaged 60 inches in diameter and was built to improve the reliability of the DWP’s major water system. This section of the project involved driving 2 deep shafts to allow for the installation of a 350-foot-long 72-inch steel casing using microtunneling construction. See Figure 1 for the shaft locations and the tunnel alignment. The challenge for the project was that this water line would have to pass beneath the Hollyhills buried box drain (15 feet high by 20 feet wide). Further complicating the construction was the soils beneath the drain. The DWP chose to drive the tunnel at a depth of approximately 65 feet to ensure that the ground conditions were uniform and suitable for the microtunneling equipment. There were two previous attempts to construct this work which failed because of poor ground conditions and very high water levels. This third attempt was critical because the DWP could not afford to have another failure due to the fallout with the residents being impacted by the project."

INTRODUCTION Radcont is a program designed by the author of this paper for the industry to use as an instrument for radiation contamination evaluation and ventilation planning system. Radiation in mines are associated with the mining of gold and gold bearing minerals, as uranium and thorium is incorporated in the mining of these minerals. Radiation contamination in South African mines is not a new concept as it was investigated by the Chamber of Mines in the early 1960's and found not to be hazardous at the time. Since some of our mines export scrap metal to customers abroad, it came to light (1991) that some of the scrap metal was radioactive. The authority that oversees the nuclear aspects in South Africa is the Council for Nuclear Safety (CNS). They investigated these matters and found that the mines needed further information regarding radioactive material and the handling of these contaminated materials. As the various mines were licensed (with various conditions incorporated) thereafter, the mines had to do their own investigations as to what extent their properties (Surface and underground) were radioactively contaminated. Some mines were found to be highly contaminated over the years of operation and controlling conditions were installed and measures installed to reduce the contamination levels. One of the conditions when issuing a licence by the Council for Nuclear Safety (CNS), is that a screening survey be carried out to determine the radiation exposure levels and corrective action to be taken if necessary. These surveys must be done by a person trained in the required procedures for such a survey. The person must also measure the risk correctly and assess the results properly. In such a survey, the internal and external exposure levels must be determined to assess the total exposure of persons working in those conditions and take appropriate action if necessary. When doing such a survey, hundreds and more likely, thou- sands of data points are recorded. In order to assess the data recorded, various integrated and difficult calculations need to be made, and takes up enormous amounts of time. (This excludes the interpretation of the results ) The following explanation of the program shows the different parts of such a survey assessment calculations to be done. The paper details the program layout and the different sub- sections within the primary program. It must be stated that the program, as with any other program, is as accurate as the data inserted into the data base. The program and details thereof are given under the following headings: 1. TOTAL EFFECTIVE DOSAGE WITH REGARDS TO: • GME required gravimetric results obtained (mg/m3) • Thick layer or total contamination measured (Bq/m2) • Dry condition surveys with dust loads taken as a Standard l0mg/m3 • Wet conditions survey with dust loads taken as l mg/m3 • Airborne long lived alpha and beta activities as determined by analysis in Bg/m3 • LTD (Thermoluminescent Dosimeter). Results as obtained from the SABS (South African Buro of Standards) are recorded in this section for each month of the year for each individual worker. An average dose is then determined at the end of the year. • Bucket measurements as recorded. • Smear samples (Loose contamination). As determined by Electra or by analysis • Occupational factors for Metallurgical and Engineering occupations in and around the Metallurgical facilities of your mine. • All underground dosage determination and calculations. (Radon and Thoron) 2. INFORMATION REQUIRED WHEN PROGRAM IS INITIALISED: As the program is started, it opens up on the contents page. Here there are various options to choose from, but one is cautioned as a beginner in operating the program, not to perform any tasks before carefully reading these instructions. Firstly, one must go to the 'Information required" pushbutton. Press this button. The information required page is shown where the cursor can be moved to the block where one can enter the specific mines name. To enter a mines name, put the cursor in the block provided and just insert the mines name with the normal keyboard keys and press the enter button on the computer keyboard. To enter the other information required such as Alpha and Beta instrument efficiency, ALI (Annual limit of intake) and probe area, one can either press the 'Data required" button for a dialog box information or enter it manually by just putting the cursor in the block provided and entering as did above. In order to insert all the required information for the pro- gram to calculate the information required, one must proceed further by entering the area names surveyed in the spaces provided. There are 20 spaces to enter 20 different areas surveyed. One must further also provide the amount of days worked in each area (i.8. 250) in the block provided. The de- fault is 250 days. Water only cyclones, sometimes referred to as hydrocyclones, are one of the newest types of coal processing equipment. These devices have achieved wide acceptance as fine coal cleaners in the past decade. Many metallurgical coal plants employ water only cyclones to process 0.5 mm x 0 size coal. Some of these plants have as many as 40 to 50 305-mm-diam units with each unit receiving as much as 9 t/h of raw feed. The growth in the utilization of hydrocyclones is due partly to the energy shortage, partly to the general increase in over-all coal preparation, and also because of a need for a simplified fine coal (0.5 mm x 0 size) gravimetric separator. Large diameter water only cyclones are also available and in use to process feed sizes up to 32 mm in size. However, the size normally employed for cleaning 0.5 mm x 0 coal are 356 mm or 305-mm-diam for single-stage circuits. In two-stage circuits, the secondary units are normally the same diameter as the primary units or smaller, such as 203-mm-diam. By using the small diameter cyclones and treating a closely sized feed, 0.5 mm x 0 only, it has been found that the probable error or imperfection of the water only cyclones is comparable to that obtained on the same size fraction treated in a large 610-mm-diam heavy media cyclone washing 38 mm x 0. The water only cyclone can approach the efficiency of a heavy media cyclone when cleaning fine solids because it creates its own dense media by accumulating high specific gravity particles in the wide angle conical section of the cyclone. A cut-away cross sectional view of a water only cyclone is shown in Fig. 1. It is also true that when treating a wide range of sizes (38 mm x 0) in heavy media cyclones, the smaller size particles (0.5 mm x 0) separate in proportion to the split of the media through the cyclone rather than by particle density.

In this study, the Reddy-Blander model was applied to predict the sulfide capacity (CS) values of FeOx-CaO-SiO2, FeOx-MnOx-SiO2 and FeO-MgO-SiO2 ternary slags, which were experimentally studied in the literature within the temperatures between 1,673 and 1,923 K. As expected, sulfide capacity values of the slags increased with increasing temperature and decreased with increasing acidic content. The model was found to be in agree-ment for all slag systems at the temperature range of 1,773-1,923 K. However, a disagreement occurred when the basic content was relatively high, at 1,673 K for FeOx-CaO-SiO2 and FeO-MnOx-SiO2 slags. The effect on the CS of high amounts of Fe+3 and Mn+3 in the slags is discussed.

Numerous worthwhile benefits accrue to the industrial organization that is supported by a maintenance organization performing at a world class level. That organization will be favored with consistently reliable production equipment. It will be assured of meeting production goals. Its product will exceed marketplace standards. Its customers will see them as a quality organization. Its employees will enjoy job satisfaction and the plant will realize continuing profitability. Every industrial plant aspires to achieve ?world class? status knowing it can compete favorably with the best, most profitable organizations in the world. The trick is to achieve the attributes that qualify your organization for world class status. But there are no world class maintenance organizations. Rather, there are world class industrial organizations that include a world class maintenance organization. Maintenance, by itself, is a service provider, dependent on the support and cooperation of other departments. When that service is exceptional, it is made that way because maintenance is operating in a plant environment that requires it to be exceptional. Managers have created an environment in which maintenance can be exceptional. The plant, mine or facility manager must acknowledge from the start that maintenance is not a stand-alone effort of a plant maintenance department. It will require the joint efforts of all plant departments. Quality material support and full cooperation from operations, for example, are among the essential requisites for effective maintenance and achievement of world class maintenance status. When attributes such as these are reinforced by dedicated plant managers, profitability soon follows.

The Fabian ore body near Malmberget, Sweden, has an ore reserve of 5 Mt of predominately low grade iron ore, containing 40-55% Fe. Mining began in 1971 with a new method called slot block caving. About 2 Mt were mined, but poor fragmentation resulted in too much secondary blasting. This decreased mucking efficiency to such an extent that the method was abandoned after only 40% of the ore volume had been mined. At this stage a large stope (180 x 30 x 100 m) had been excavated. Although the exposed area was quite large, no caving action occurred in the hanging wall or in the ceiling. LKAB decided in 1977 to introduce sublevel stoping using 105-mm-diam holes. This was the first time large diameter holes were used underground in Sweden. The method had been evaluated in collaboration with the University of Luleå (LuH), the Swedish Detonic Research Foundation (SveDeFo), and the Swedish Mining Research Foundation.

A study was conducted to control iron in copper electrolyte streams using Eichrom Industries' new monophosphonic/sulphonic acid resin. The resin strongly and selectively extracts ferric ion over copper and cobalt from highly acidic copper electrolytes. The resin has a loading capacity of 27-g/L iron and can be readily regenerated. In addition, the new resin can easily be synthesized using commercially available starting materials. This paper presents the experimental results for iron control in copper electrolyte streams using the new resin and discusses its potential applications to other hydrometallurgical streams.

Bioleaching is an environmental friendly process that has gained much interest for the production of metals from metal-bearing wastes or materials. The process decreases carbon footprint by reducing consumption of fossil fuels. Iron is a key factor in acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria’s activity, which is used extensively in the bioleaching of sulfide minerals. In the present study, the effect of different iron sources is investigated on sphalerite (ZnS) bioleaching. For this purpose, the effects of FeSO4  .7H2O, Fe2(SO4  )3 and FeS2 (pyrite) were studied on bacterial activity, and zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) dissolutions were monitored from a ZnS concentrate. Under optimum conditions, the dissolutions of Zn, Pb, Cd and As were found to be 39.8, 0.1. 0.03 and 10 percent, respectively, in 25 days.

In the past decade, numerous urge scale drilling projects have made use of reverse circulation air lift methods. Reverse air lift pumping can be established by injecting gas into a column of liquid; the subsequently decreased density of the gas-liquid mixture allows atmospheric pressure outside the lift conduit to establish flow. The rate of flow can be controlled by varying the gas to liquid ratio. A typical reverse circulation air lift system is depicted in Figure 1. Allen1 has described a number of reverse air lift drilling projects. Although cited examples are generally related to large diameter holes, the method has seen use in other applications such as sand dredging, chemical pumping, water well pumping and continuous coring. One particular benefit obtained with enclosed reverse circulation drilling is elimination of lost circulation. The required air/water ratio for pumping at a given submergence and lift has been established experimentally by Gibbs2. His data, however, do not reflect sensitivity of flowrate to air/water ratio. Further, in Gibbs' work, air apparently is injected continuously along the column of water. This configuration differs from that used in reverse air lift drilling where air is injected at discrete points only. Gas lift theory has received considerable attention over the past decades. Orldszewski3 defined flow regimes in two phase flow. Griffith and Wallis4 determined relative velocities of gas to liquid. Two-phase flow has been studied extensively for oil transport in inclined and vertical pipes by Chierici et a15, Beggs and Brill6, and Gould, Tek and Katz.7

M.J. McPherson Having worked on the thermodynamics of air/liquid-water mixtures passing through the surface fans of deep mines, I find this paper of great interest and congratulate the authors on producing it. There are two matters, however, deserving discussion. First, the authors have described the classical theory of fog formation with fogging occurring at "supersaturation." In fact, the process of fog formation begins well below 100% humidity. The more strongly hygroscopic nuclei in the atmosphere will attract water molecules and begin to grow at a relative humidity perhaps as low as 70%. The process is a dynamic one with both condensation and evaporation taking place throughout the mixture on microscopic liquid surfaces. As saturation is approached, the rate of condensation accelerates rapidly producing the familiar reduction in visibility. Hygroscopic nuclei are present in all natural atmospheres and under the appropriate conditions of pressure and temperature, will produce clean fogs. However, if the air is polluted by particulates from combustion or other processes then the resultant coagulation with growing liquid particles may produce dense (and sometimes photochemical) smogs. It is this process that is likely to occur in underground mines when moist air is cooled below dew point. Second, the authors have summarized very well the individual measures that might alleviate the problem. In particular, I agree that neither heating nor refrigerating the air, by themselves, provides a satisfactory solution. However, there is a combination of these that provides a neat and effective control of fog formation. This involves a small, self-contained refrigeration unit within a duct but without the usual external heat rejection facility. The air is cooled below dew point and, hence, dehumidified on passing over the cold evaporator coils. The heat from the condenser is rejected back into the air downstream from the water eliminator, as shown in Fig. 1. The duct configuration can be designed to create good mixing at the outlet. I have used a climatic simulation program to illustrate the effect, assuming a 500-m (1,640 ft) long airway of cross section 60 m2 (645 sq ft), an airflow of 9 m3/s (318 cu ft per sec), inlet conditions of 19/19.25°C (66/67°F) wet bulb/dry bulb temperatures, a virgin rock temperature of 17°C (63°F) and typical rock thermal properties for a hard-rock mine. I have also assumed that 10% of the rock surface is wet. Figure 2 shows the variation in temperatures along the airway if no measures are taken. The relative humidity remains close to 100% and condensation will occur throughout the length of the airway. Before any such installation is designed, the exercise must, of course, be repeated for each location with accurate data. However, this example demonstrates the potential of the system. The idea is not new - the principle is sometimes used in air-conditioning plants for buildings. Figure 3 shows the effect of removing 30 kw of heat by evaporator coils sited 40 m (131 ft) along the airway and rejecting that heat (plus another 10 kw of compressor and fan power) into the air at 60 m (197 ft). Condensate water is produced, at a rate of 0.45 L/min (0.12 gpm). The result of this sequential cooling/dehumidification/heating process is to separate the wet and dry bulb temperatures along the length of the airway. The relative humidity increases from 80% at the duct outlet to 92% at 500 m (1,640 ft). The airway is maintained free from fog.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as black lung, is caused by the inhalation of respirable coal mine dust and is a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease with no cure. Historically, CWP has taken a tremendous human and financial toll on the U.S. coal mining industry. Recent health surveillance data indicate that CWP continues to occur at elevated levels. Respirable coal dust exposure must be controlled to prevent the development of CWP. The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts laboratory and mine-site research to identify control technologies that can be used to successfully reduce respirable dust levels. Various technologies, using multiple methods of control, can be applied to reduce dust levels. An overview of CWP’s impact and a general methodology for controlling respirable dust in underground coal mines are discussed in this paper.

[INTRODUCTION] The significance of gamma exposure to uranium miners has been recognized only in the last few years. Most ore deposits which have been underground mined, were 1% or less U308. Full-time mining of this grade ore can result in exposure exceeding 1 Rem per year. Several companies in Saskatchewan are planning to mine recently discovered ore bodies which contain ore pods in excess of 10% U308. The purpose of this paper is to present dose data which can be used to estimate gamma exposure from high-grade ore deposits, and to present mining techniques which will minimize miner exposure. [Dose Estimates] When one has a point source of radiation, the conventional laws of isotropic emission and the fall of dose with square of the distance, make dose calculations relatively easy. However, if one has an area source of infinite thickness, the assumption must be made that a uniform gamma flux is being emitted from all faces of the source (Figure 1). Dose from gamma emission would fall off only due to air attenuation up to such a distance at which the source can be considered to be a point source (usually 10 times the largest dimension of the source). For short distances, such as to the cab of ore-moving equipment, the dose reduction would be negligible. Assumptions: 1) Radium and gamma-emitting daughters are in secular equilibrium with uranium. 2) All gamma radiation is emitted from radium and its daughters. 3) Average gamma energy of 0.8 MeV. 4) Uranium ore has a linear attenuation coefficient of 0.212 cm-1, similar to that of Si02(sand). 5) Uranium ore density of 3.0 gm/cm3. 6) One curie of radium emits 6.84 x 1010 photon/sec(l). 7) One percent uranium ore contains 1 x 10-8 Ci/cm3 of radium. 8) Each MeV of 0.8 MeV photon results in a dose of 2.10[ ]10-3 mRem/hr. per MeV/cm2 -sec. 1) 9) Minimum ore depth 100 cm. 10) Linear attenuation coefficient instant for radium gamma of 0.374 cm -1 [ ] The photon flux from a radioactive slab is computed as follows: [Flux = photon/cm3 3(1) 2u S] [where, us is the linear absorption coefficient of s the source (uranium ore).] Thus, 1% uranium ore, in the form of an infinite slab, emits 1613 photon/cm2-sec, which results in a dose rate of 2.71 mRem/hr. Since the dose from an infinite slab is the same as a dose from an infinite radius right circular cylinder, the only correction needed from the above dose rate is for finite radius and point of dose above the end of the cylinder (Figure 2) [Dose = mRem/hr. {E2(bl) - E2(b3) - [(E2(b1sec[E] -E2(b3sec[E]]cos[O](1)]

Introduction The Vernal Phosphate Operation is located in northeastern Utah, about 18 km (11 miles) north of Vernal, about 280 km (175 miles) east of Salt Lake City, UT. The plant began initial operations in 1961 under the name of the San Francisco Chemical Co. In 1981, Chevron purchased the operation from Stauffer Chemical Co. In 1982, plant capacity was doubled to about 72.6 kt/a (800,000 stpy) of phosphate concentrate. From 1984 to May 1986, another expansion increased the capacity to 1.2 Mt/a (1.3 million stpy) of concentrate. It also incorporated a number of equipment and process changes designed to increase the overall plant phosphate recovery. A 150-km (94-mile) slurry pipeline, the world's longest phosphate pipeline, was also constructed from the Vernal plant to a new Chevron Chemical and Fertilizer plant near Rock Springs, WY. Over the past five years, plant expansions and the pipeline construction have been accomplished without missing a single concentrate shipment.

Recently passed federal strip mining legislation officially emphasizes that the increased coal production required by this country through surface mining is going to be obtained only with stricter environmental standards. Dozing overburden down the hillside in Appalachian contour mining or leaving drag1ine spoils in area mining is now taboo and it is now or will soon be necessary to return the disturbed land to as good or better condition than before mining. These new restrictions will create a need for new and better ways to do the job. This paper describes one approach for utilizing scrapers and dozers to strip all of the overburden and to replace that overburden in an environmentally satisfactory fashion. The objective was to do this at a lower cost than that possible with the traditional dragline system using dozers and scrapers for reclamation and topsoil handling. In area stripping, the dragline has been able to move overburden at an extremely low cost. Operating costs of 8-13¢/bcy are typical in many operations where rehandling is not required. However, the cost of leveling the spoil piles and rehandling topsoil add considerably to the low basic cost of drag1ine stripping.

Good afternoon gentlemen. To begin, may I say ?thank you? to the AIME for the invitation to be here today to talk about my company's experience with shovel, truck, pocket, to car loading. The other author of this paper is here today. (Introduce John Sweet). Before we get to the details of this paper I want to tell you a little about Erie Mining Company. Erie Mining Company is located on the east end of the Mesabi Range in northern Minnesota and is engaged in the business of processing taconite rock into iron ore pellets. In 1970, the twelfth year of production, Erie will produce its rated capacity of 10.3 million tons of high grade iron ore pellets. The plant is the first of five iron ore pelletizing operations managed by Pickands Mather & Co. with a combined annual production capacity of 21 million tons. This plant began producing high grade iron ore pellets in 1957 placing it among the earliest of taconite production facilities in North America. Historically Pickands Mather & Co. had been a leading natural ore mine managing firm in the Great Lakes region for more than 70 years. Pickands Mather & Co. moved into the new field of taconite mining and processing with management and operational experience from the open pits and underground mines. We were to learn much of volume taconite handling requiring new equipment and new procedures. A trial and error period through the early years of taconite processing developed through the operation of an experimental sized preliminary plant near the present Erie Mining Company site.
