What is your assessment of the current state of the minerals industry? It is no understatement that domestic mining is facing a severe crisis at this time. The sharp decline in commodity prices and demand is putting a great strain on domestic and worldwide mining, causing major declines in profits and market capital of mining companies. This, in turn, has lead to major production cuts, layoffs, shut-downs of operating properties, and the deferral of new and expansion projects. These changes in the minerals industry have played a major role in the health of the economy. Operationally, the industry continues to develop new technologies that are making our work more efficient, more cost effective and more environmentally acceptable and safe. During downturns like this, companies generally pay closer attention to operational efficiencies and process optimization. Historically, new technologies and processes tend to be developed during down markets, and I believe we will see the same thing as companies strive to preserve liquidity and maintain or improve their margins. On the positive side, the drop in commodity prices has resulted in a reduction in operational costs, as the costs for fuel supplies and construction materials have decreased.

A coal-fired fluidized bed combustion (FBC) system will be installed at the Owatonna Tool Company, Owatonna, Minnesota. Two FBC combustors will burn solid fuels: coal, petroleum coke, and wood and paper wastes. Crushed dolomitic limestone will be used to control sulfur emissions to EPA limits. The combustors will supply indirectly heated hot air and hot water for paint drying operations, washing processes, and space heating. The program is sponsored by the United States Department of Energy and the Owatonna Tool Company, and is one of five programs designed to demonstrate industrial applications of coal-fired fluidized bed equipment. The paper will describe the combustion system and the results of development tests with dolomitic limestone for sulfur emission control.

Over the past 14 years, the efforts of 2 companies and several individuals have outlined a major solfataric gold ore body in the Summitville district in the southeast San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The hard work of these years could not have flowered without a dedication to modern exploration methods, an intense interest in new theories of ore genesis, and a relentless discontent with the accepted geology of the Summitville area. To set the stage for this discovery period, it must be noted that it began 100 years after gold was first found at Summitville. It was the height of the "porphyry copper" era and gold was still not a part of the explorationists' portfolio. It was also a time of great intellectual stimulation. Theories were rapidly developing to relate different types of ore deposition and to place ore genesis within the fabric of plate tectonics. Summitville itself had just been linked to the newly discovered Platoro caldera complex and the Platoro lineament. This in turn related Summitville to the other San Juan volcanic field caldera ore deposits.

Throughout the 1960's and 1970's world trade grew rapidly, reaching a peak of USS1.8 trillion in 1980. Since then the world recession of the early 1980's shrunk trade to about US$1.6 trillion. The reduced cash flow to developing economies made it difficult to service their huge international debts, Nowadays lenders are reluctant to grant Third World countries additional credit. The shortage of export financing, plus trade barriers set up by developed countries, is further inhibiting international trade. Therefore, countries are turning to new and creative alternatives to financing imports of consumer as well as of investment goods. Non-cash transactions, including different forms of countertrade, are rapidly growing alternatives to traditional trade financing patterns. In 1983 about 30% of international trade, or close to US$600 bill ion, were presumably done by non-cash transactions, up from barely 2% in 1976. By year 2000, half the world trade is likely to be conducted on basis of barter. As of mid-1984 some 88 nations used countertrade regularly and Governments of at least 15 Latin American countries had arranged or mandated commercial countertrade.

My first regular job nearly fell through. My parents were spending the summer in California and I joined them at Lake Tahoe where we were guests at the lovely summer home of the Reids of Belmont. The time went quickly but I was eager to start work so I left for Bisbee a few days earlier than I had arranged. This was lucky, as just after I left a letter came from Gene Whitely, chief engineer of Calumet and Arizona, saying that because of the depressed copper industry there would be no job. I reached Bisbee on a Saturday morning, a day or two before my 23rd birthday, July 27, 1907. The brown plastei four-story Copper Queen Hotel was only a few steps from the station where the branch railway ended. I rented the cheapest room on the top floor and, of course, there was no elevator. I soon learned how to walk up the mile of switching tracks to the Calumet and Arizona office at the Irish Mag mine. I was horrified when Whitely told me about his letter telling me not to come, but since I had not received it he relented and said I could work for a short time anyhow. I was to start at 7:30 the next Monday morning, "holding the ignorant end of the tape”-in other words being surveyor's assistant, at $100 a month. Hours were from 7:30 to 5: 00, seven days a week. I spent Sunday walking around the town. I rented a room at the Royal Lodging House, which was cheaper than the hotel. It smelled strongly of carbolic acid but that meant no bugs. Compared with Cobalt or Cripple Creek, Bisbee didn't seem unattractive. The main street, with one or two-storied stores and saloons, followed the bottom of the canyon with high steep hills on both sides. Estimation tools and models are now available to estimate fragmentation, but some variables have yet to be studied to understand their effect on the fragmentation process. One such variable whose mechanisms have yet to be studied is the residence time, which in block caving directly depends on the distance that fragments travel from their original position in the broken ore to the drawpoint. In this study, granular material fragmentation was characterized during its flow to understand its characteristics and mechanisms. The results show that the breakage of fragment singularities occurred mainly within medium and smaller sizes, increasing fine material during flow. Thus, the main fragmentation mechanism in experiments was identified as abrasion between rock fragments where fine material continuously increases as distance increases in spite of the high rock strength and the piston flow movement used. The results presented here can be applied to incorporate fragmentation during flow of large travel distance of ore such as in block caving.

[Currently the cost of carrying out 'in situ' geotechnical investigation programmes or installing and operating monitoring systems at construction or mining sites is rising var." rapidly. This is primarily because of our ever increasing labour rates. As a result of this problem efforts are no,, being made develop techniques for the economical; collection of large quantities of geotechnical data relating, to such problems as done stability evaluation, the behaviour of underground openings, or 'in situ' testing procedures. The efforts to reduce the labour content. are particularly apparent in those procedures which have traditionally been manpower intensive e.g. 'in situ' permeability testing where an entire drilling crew and their associated eguipment have been on standby while testis has been carried out; or data collection in underground construction operations where much tine is typically wasted obtaining or maintaining access to instrument sites. In an attempt to illustrate one specialist consulting company's approach to the problem of reducing investigation costs, this rarer examines four recent developments in the field of geotechnical investigation and monitoring which have come about during the last two Years as a result of cur research and development programme. Although these techniques and devices have been developed for specific projects, they all have broad applications in the geotechnical field and they are indicative of the direction in which this company feels developments will take place.]

Located in Central Nevada, The Round Mountain Gold deposit has been continuously mined since 1977. Present proven and probable reserves are 226 Mt (250 million short tons) at 1.1 g/t (.032 oz per short ton). The current open pit mining rate of 118 Kt (130,000 short tons) per day is producing 41 Kt (45,000 short tons) per day of ore to be processed by heap leach methods. At this rate, the current reserves provide a 16 year mine life. The high mining rate and strict ore delivery requirements mandate comprehensive and realistic mine planning. The mine planning process is described in three general steps: Deposit Modeling; Mine Design; and, Production Coordination and Support.

"To Sink or Not to Sink"; this play on the Bard's words sums up the considerations and problems that face the owner on every potential shaft sinking project. The growing demand for access into the earth is pressing construction into new areas and to greater depths. The following discussion will entertain some of the effects of these new and unknown aspects upon the approach to designing and sinking of deep shafts. We will also look at the current shortages of equipment, materials and skilled manpower, and their effect upon the planning and sinking of shafts. Particular emphasis will be placed upon equipment selection, and we will discuss how economics, while always a prime consideration, is now, more than ever, both an incentive and a detriment to the industry. FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS Shaft construction is assuming ever increasing importance both in mining and civil endeavors. The rapid depletion of near surface mineral reserves is requiring the mining industry to look deeper into the earth for new sources. These greater depths increase the exposure to unfavorable geological conditions; heavier ground, high water pressures, and high temperature. South African gold mines have now reached depths of 12, 000 feet, where the rock temperature is 1380 and water bursts from the fissures. Introduction Hard rock mine closure (often referred to as decommissioning), mined land reclamation and financial assurance requirements are receiving considerable attention by governments and organizations around the world. In the United States, federal agencies and the states continue to consider and make changes to laws governing mine closure and mined land reclamation, most of which were originally enacted in the mid-1970’s through the mid-1990’s. Internationally, a number of prominent groups and various countries currently are considering new laws, regulations and policies for mined land reclamation. For example, the European Union has conducted a review of existing European laws concerning mining wastes and mine water and is considering new directives concerning mine waste and mine water management and liability schemes that are likely to significantly impact mine closure and mined land reclamation. Many countries, particularly those outside of North America, Europe, and Australia, have recently adopted or are considering new mine closure and reclamation legislation and regulations. These include significant hard-rock mining countries such as Chile, Peru and South Africa. This paper identifies recent developments in hard-rock mine closure and mined land reclamation laws in the United States, focusing on several of the more significant and controversial developments. It also discusses some of the more significant international efforts to consider mine closure and mined land reclamation laws and policies and some of the notable conclusions and trends from those efforts. The focal issues discussed in this paper include requirements for the reclamation of open pit mines, including backfilling; consideration of and measures to address the mining of sulfide ores and potential for acid mine drainage; and new requirements for the estimation of closure and reclamation costs and for financial assurance for closure and reclamation.

Digital image analysis systems to quantify particle size of crushed materials have successfully been applied in large-scale mining operations throughout the world. Particle size measurement at various crushing and sieving stages, especially in aggregate production, will facilitate the industry’s desire and need to achieve higher levels of process control and automation. This paper will 1) summarize applications of digital image analysis in the industrial minerals industries and introduce the Split-Online technology; 2) detail an actual recent test application of digital image analysis that ultimately lead to the installation of an automatic, non-invasive particle size distribution monitoring system; 3) document how this information is being applied: and 4) summarize the new Split-Online Aggregates Module now available.

Many studies have been made of the microflotation of quartz (1,2,3,4,5,6) and alumina (3,5,6, 7,8) using various anionic and cationic hetero- polar hydrocarbon surfactants as collectors. A few studies have been made on these minerals using amphoteric hydrocarbon collectors ( 9,10, 11,12) and only a few studies have been made on the use of fluorocarbon surfactants as flotation collectors (13,14). The present investigation compares microflotation response of the two minerals in hydocarbon and fluorocarbon collector systems of the anionic, cationic and amphoteric types. An attempt is made to relate flotation response of the minerals to their electrokinetic behavior and the pKa values of the collectors.

Earlier work at Mintek on the development of gold-selective resins culminated in a plant-manufactured batch of the first generation of Minix resin. A subsequent pilot-plant campaign at a South African gold mine identified some problems with that resin. These included lower capacity and selectivity for gold compared with the laboratory prototype, and a slow but progressive loss in capacity as the resin was eluted and reloaded cyclically. These problems were overcome by chemical modification of the resin structure. Examples of these improvements are presented. The commercialization of a new resin for a new metallurgical application presents problems, which are exacerbated by the initial lack of demand for the resin because the process is unfamiliar to the mining industry. Progress in the commercial development of Minix is discussed in this context.

Microtunneling first appeared with some regularity in the United States in 1987. Until then, only Japan and Germany utilized this method of construction. Its high costs initially limited its application to special situations. The last ten years have seen the use of new pipe materials, new machines, new cutterheads, new techniques, and an average growth of30 percent each year. This paper documents the growth and changes that have occurred with microtunneling. Based on current industry practices and advances from abroad, this paper postulates what the next ten years may hold.

Several laboratory methods are available to determine the thermal conductivity of rocks, but most of them are complex and cumbersome. The present study explains the working principle of Lee’s apparatus, which is relatively simple, easy to fabricate and use, and provides consistent results. In the present study, thermal conductivities of sandstone cores obtained from an Indian coal mine are determined using Lee’s apparatus. An approach is discussed to determine the temperature gradient of sandstone specimens while cooling and is used to calculate thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivities of different sandstone specimens have values between 2.37 and 2.59 Wm−1°C−1. For different sandstone cores obtained from the field, properties including specific gravity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity and porosity, along with thermal conductivity, were determined and highlighted in this study.

A hydrocyclone is a piece of equipment commonly used as a classifier in mill circuit operations. Traditionally, hydrocyclone performance is characterized by the classification efficiency parameter, such as cut size (d50c), sharpness of separation () and bypass (Rf ). A plethora of endeavors have already been made to develop parametric models to determine hydrocyclone performance that correlate design and process variables. In contrast to those studies, we made an attempt to develop an approach to derive required design parameters purely from hydrodynamic principles that provides a platform to optimize the operation of a hydrocyclone for a given application. In this selection methodology, we calculated the differential pressure at the air core, as well as the tangential velocity at the boundary of the air core from the vortex principle in a confined geometry at different operating regimes. A series of experiments were conducted using Weir’s Cavex® hydrocylone where process variables—such as solids concentration and feed flowrates—were experimentally studied to determine the key classification parameters. For the validation of the current approach we used the same process variables to derive design parameters and compared them with the existing design. The current approach can provide insights towards the selection of design parameters and can be useful for mining industry professionals to optimize different operating parameters of hydrocyclones to achieve the best performance.

Construction of a major linear project in any environment is difficult, at best. Construction of a major linear project which includes major subway elements, both cut and cover and tunneling, in the center of an urban environment, approaches the impossible. I believe such a project would be impossible for a private company or a privately owned utility for a variety of reasons. The major two reasons are the funding necessary for such massive projects and the myriad of individual interests associated with private ownership of land. Such projects are possible in the public sector only because the need for the project... as is the case with mass transportation in Atlanta. . .overrides the profit motive. Without the profit motive, private companies, whether utilities or not, are precluded from practical interest in the development of any project. While it is safe to conclude that a profit-oriented business would have no practical interest in developing such massive projects as may include major tunnels, it would be useful, I think, to compare some of the significant differences between private profit-oriented businesses, and an agency, or Authority, such as MARTA, in building a major linear project. Introduction Minicomputers have been gaining acceptance in mining. Low cost interactive processing and plotting can now be controlled by geologists or engineers needing rapid solutions and specialized mining software in formats that allow noncomputer personnel to readily interact with computer processes. User-oriented programs maximize the use of interactive display features and graphics, as shown by the HP9845 minicomputer, a unit with portability, processing power, graphics capabilities, capacity, and peripherals such as plotters, digitizers, disk drives, and printers. Application Coal exploration projects require that much effort be spent determining coal volumes within trial pit limits. This determines a prospect's viability and potential. Adapting volume calculations to a computer has been limited, since it was difficult to create reasonable representations of complex coal seam geometry with a digital process. So many of the simple mechanical procedures needed to produce pit reserves are still performed manually by geologists and engineers. But with new minicomputers and their interactive graphics, it is now practical to accurately model complex structures without tedious calculations. GEOSEM (Geomin Seam Oriented Exploration System) is a computer system designed to analyze coal prospects. The system shows how a coal prospect, with complex geology, can be quickly analyzed, modeled, displayed, and evaluated for mineable reserves. Its interactive graphics allow rapid visual presentation of data, high-speed tabular reports, and precision plotting. The system is most effective when used by a geologist or engineer who selects the required operations and specifies relevant parameters via screen and keyboard interaction. Rolling Hills The Rolling Hills prospect represents a typical Rocky Mountain coal deposit. Enough geological interpretation has been done to show a complex system of block faulting with coal seams following synclines of stratified lithologies. With the completion of initial drill hole exploration, questions arose concerning coal volumes and strip ratios involved with various pit limits. Quality information had been gathered on the coal intercepts. It was decided that coal vol¬umes and pit designs were of prime importance. The objective was to enter and display data, create a computer model based on interpretation, develop pit designs, compute seam/ waste volumes, and report various contents. The project, begun by entering data in the GEOSEM system, was completed in several days. Data Entry For modeling, the prime information was seam identity and drill hole intercept. Other information-rock type, Btu rating, and percent of ash, sulfur, and moisture-was also available. It, too, was entered into the data base through the computer keyboard and then reported, verified, and corrected. Various reports can be produced, according to user specified sort parameters. For example, from an analysis of available data, only 14 intercepts could be found with Btu value greater than 8000 and sulfur content less than 0.4%. The sort option can also be used prior to entry into the analysis routines. Data Analysis Though the objective was to create a seam model and compute reserves, it became necessary to project quality information into unsampled areas. Statistical analysis was then war-ranted. A typical analysis correlated the lack of relationship between percentage of ash and Btu. Although histograms were also produced, these typified a lack of samples and "ragged" distributions. A geostatistical analysis was also applied, showing the results of computing a 2-D variogram on the largest coal seam. Results showed an average range of 18 m, with a poorly defined variogram. Data Display and Drafting Scaled plans and sections were required so seam locations could be compared to hand drawn interpretations and drill coordinates verified. At the same time, topography could be interpolated from collar elevations to determine whether surface control points were needed for better definition. In addition, a new set of 50 final-scale drawings were required, showing new drilling information. By using the computer screen as a "scratch pad" device, various sections were displayed and then plotted on a drum plotter at the desired scale for overlay on original sections. In the ten years since its discovery the Lac Tio ilmenite-hematite deposit has become one of the world's largest sources of titanium ore. The deposit lies 25 miles north Havre St, Pierre, a fishing village on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River some 400 miles northeast of Quebec City. In 1941, J, A, Retty made a reconnaissance survey of the region for the Quebec Department of Mines. His results, published in 1942 and 1944, described a number of small ilmenite occurrences on the shores of four lakes within the area. Several of these were staked by Montreal and Toronto interests, Two of the claim groups were later optioned by Kennco Explorations, (Canada) Ltd, and a third by the New Jersey Zinc Company, During a detailed exploration program in 1946, Kennco geologists discovered eight ilmenite deposits, one of which was Lac Tio, the largest known body of ilmenite-hematite ore in the world. Quebec Iron and Titanium Corporation owned two-thirds by Kennecott and one-third by The New Jersey Zinc Company as organized in 1948 to equip and operate the new mining property. A railroad 27 miles in length was built (completed in 1950) to transport the ore to the St. Lawrence River at Havre St. Pierre, An electric furnace treatment plant, yielding a high purity iron and slag containing 70 m 75 percent Ti02, to process the ore was built at Sorel, Quebec, 550 miles up the river from Havre St. Pierre.

INTRODUCTION Lead and zinc are today rightly regarded as sister metals. Historically, however, they differ markedly with lead being known and in general use as the metal since 3000 BC in several countries which at that time might have been described as mature economies. Zinc was not isolated and recognised as an industrial metal with distinct and valuable properties until about 1700-1800 AD (although it had, of course, been utilised as a constituent of brass for some 2000 years previously). c were well established as industrial metals by the beginning of the 20th century. The present paper briefly reviews the overall growth in world consumption* and changes in the three main areas which today represent the mature economies or industrialised areas, i. e. ,Europe, the United States and Japan. Trends in overall consumption are determined by the demands for the individual uses for lead and zinc. The changes in patterns of use in the industrialised areas - individually and collectively - and reasons for the changes are also considered. LONG TERM TRENDS - 1900-1984 The World Picture Since the beginning of the 20th century the world consumption of lead (3.9 million tonnes in 1984) has grown almost fourfold and that of zinc (4.7 million tonnes in 1984) is almost eleven times greater than it was in 1900. The long-term trend has been one of continuing expansion for both. metals although the pattern has been severely disturbed at certain periods, for example in the years immediately following the two world wars and at times of marked recessions in industrialised areas. Apart from such major setbacks, new levels of consumption have been established regularly every few years. Recently, however, consumption has not really grown and with only a slow and partial recovery in world industrial activity at present, there is no indication that the peak consumptions of 4.2 million tonnes of lead, set in 1979, and 4.8 million tonnes of zinc (1973) will be exceeded in the near future. The growth in world lead and zinc consumption since 1900 is shown in Figure 1 (which includes changes in copper and aluminium for comparison). Overall growth over the period 1900-1984 has been about two percent a year for lead and about three percent for zinc (annual growth for copper has also been about three percent). Increases in tonnage consumption and growth rates by decade for lead and zinc are summarised in Table I. However, the growth rates by decade sometimes conceal very large individual annual increases and decreases. For example, in 1975 lead consumption fell by 13 percent and zinc consumption by 22 percent compared to 1974. In 1976 consumption of lead and zinc rose by 12 percent and 18 percent respectively. The years when consumption 'landmarks' (ie one, two, three and four million tonnes) were first reached are shown on Table 2. Clearly, the pattern of shorter periods being required to attain each extra million tonnes of consumption was broken in the 1970's. The consumption of zinc overtook that of lead for the first time in 1940, and since 1946 has always been at a higher level. Trends in industrialised areas The two key industrialised areas at the beginning of the 20th century were Europe and the United States which between them accounted for some 95 percent of world lead consumption and 98 percent of zinc consumption. Figures 2 and 3 show the growth in lead and zinc consumption, and Figures 4 and 5 the percentage shares for each area since 1900. Europe has usually been the major user of lead except for some years in the 1920fs, most of the 40's and early 50's when consumption in the United States was larger. In 1900, Europe accounted for about 64 percent of world lead consumption and the United States just over 30 percent. Currently, Europe takes about 40 percent of world consumption and the
