A real time data acquisition system has been developed for implementing standard radiometric analytical techniques, applied to the monitoring and control of mineral processing plants. The system uses standard ECB-bus microprocessors and peripherals, in conjunction with a specially designed nucleonic pulse ADC. It is being applied to the accurate on-line analysis of naturally-,occurring radioelements in processing plants, for example by simultaneously measuring the intensity of 1.46 MeV gamma-rays from the naturally-occurring radioisotope K-40, and the stream density by gamma-ray transmission of 662 keV gamma-rays. Gain stabilisation of the NaI(T1) scintillation detectors is maintained by the microprocessor in slave units, each of which may control up to four sample presentation systems. Data analysis - including corrections for bulk density, radioactive decay of the Cs-137 gamma-ray source, pulse pile-up, dead time and external background - is carried out in a master computer which is connected to the slave unit, and can be interfaced to the plant control computer via data links.

What is the most economical way of tunneling in mixed ground that may experience high pressures? Non-continuously pressurized, mixed ground Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are being utilized to deal with a wide range of geology. Continuous improvements in these mixed ground machines allow for ever-increasing efficiency and reduction of project risk due to unexpected conditions. We will explore the performance of recent mixed ground machines throughout the world and then look at how new improvements to mixed ground machines will enable excavation of an expanded range of ground conditions. These conditions include mixed ground with low fines, mixed face rock, and fracture/fault zones with high pressures where in the past a Slurry TBM may have been utilized.

"Construction of the OceanaGold Haile operation’s process plant in Kershaw, South Carolina is currently under way, with ore through the mill expected in late 2016 and commercial production expected in early 2017. The process is designed to treat 6,350 tonnes per day with minor upgrades required to achieve 8,270 tonnes per day. Plant optimization during detailed engineering, combined with a focus on de-risking the process, has resulted in numerous process changes since the initial design. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio operation, whilst identifying potential expansion opportunities. INTRODUCTION Haile Gold Mine is located in Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The last operation employed heap leaching from 1985 through 1992. Since then, the property has been closed and fully reclaimed. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that delineated 2.02Moz. of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2.06 g/t. OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals and the Haile Operation in October of 2015. OceanaGold operates under a risk management philosophy in all aspects of operation, both corporately and at each individual business unit, and has implemented numerous process changes to eliminate or mitigate risks identified in the initial design of the processing circuit, and provided increased opportunity for optimization and expansion. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio Operation, and identifies potential expansion opportunities. INITIAL PROCESSING CIRCUIT DESIGN An extensive metallurgical test work program was undertaken by Romarco Minerals and third party laboratories during the initial design phase of the Haile project [1]. This preliminary test work provided the technical information as a basis of plant design. The initial flow sheet for the Haile processing circuit is shown in Figure 1 (see APPENDIX). The plant is designed to process 6,350 tpd (7,000 stpd) on an annualized basis. The process begins with a jaw crusher followed by a SAG and ball mill grinding circuit to reduce particle size to P80 74 µm. A flash flotation cell treats 50% of the cyclone underflow in the ball mill circuit. Grinding circuit product is sent to a rougher flotation circuit to recover gold-bearing pyrite. The flotation concentrates from flash and rougher flotation are reground to P80 13 µm using stirred media detritors (SMD’s). The rougher flotation tail is pumped to the carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit for gold recovery. The reground concentrate is pre-aerated prior to being pumped to the CIL circuit. The CIL circuit is a hybrid circuit with eight tanks. Tank 1 leaches the pre-aerated concentrate only, and tanks 2 through 8 leach the combined flotation tailing and tank 1 discharge. The carbon strip circuit is a standard pressure Zadra system, followed by electrowinning, and refining using an induction furnace. CIL tailing passes through a cyanide recovery thickener prior cyanide destruction and then pumped to the tailing storage facility (TSF)."

"INTRODUCTION The Butte district of Montana is well-known as one of the biggest historic producers of copper in the world. It is also a classic example of a porphyry Cu-Mo system that has been overprinted by zoned, polymetallic (Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag) lode mineralization. After copper, silver was the next most important metal mined from Butte, with over 700 million ounces of total Ag production between 1880 and the present day. Although many papers have been written on the mineralogy of the early porphyry Cu-Mo mineralization and the high-grade Cu-rich lodes in the center of the district, relatively little information exists on the mineralogy of silver in Butte. The purpose of this paper is to summarize past and present silver production trends for the district, and to combine previously published work with new research to examine the mineralogy of silver in the Butte mining district. BUTTE HISTORIC SILVER PRODUCTION According to a recent USGS compilation1, Butte is one of the most Ag-rich porphyry deposits in the world, both in terms of average Ag grade (8.6 g/ton) and total production + reserves (Fig. 1). It is also the 2nd biggest Ag-producing mining district in the U.S. (after the Couer d’Alene district, Idaho). Annual silver and copper production data for the Butte district, compiled from various sources2,3,4, are summarized in Figure 2. Peak production of Ag and Cu was in 1917. While Ag production gradually declined in the ensuing decades, Cu production remained strong until the years leading up to the closure of the Berkeley Pit in 1982. In 1984, mining of the nearby Continental Pit resumed under a different operator, and continues to the present day. The Continental mine produced an average of 35,000 metric tons Cu and 575,000 oz Ag per year between 1984 and 20044. These figures do not take into account a period of mine closure in 2001-2003 due to an unexpected hike in utility prices. The long-term decline in Ag/Cu ratio of ore mined in Butte (Figure 3) is due to several factors, including: 1) changes in metal prices; 2) a downwards decrease in Ag/Cu ratio of most of the lodes with depth below surface; and 3) a shift in mining methods from selective underground mining of high-grade veins to open-pit mining of the bulk rock."

Two weathering procedures are being developed by the Acid Drainage Technology Initiative in cooperation with federal agencies(OSM and EPA). Objects are to: (1) standardize existing humidity cell and leaching column procedures; (2) improve test methods by maintaining a carbon dioxide enriched environment needed to optimize carbonate mineral dissolution, and quantifying particle size variables to evaluate reaction kinetics, and (3) provide flexibility in test method implementation consistent with EPA guidelines for Performance-Based Measurement Systems. Preliminary results indicate the CO2enriched leaching environments produce alkalinities that are similar to field observations and greater than the tests run under atmospheric PCO2. Leaching columns produce higher alkalinity than humidity cells.

An investigation has been completed of the technical and economic feasibility of construction of a processing facility for gold extraction from arsenical tailings, grading nearly 12 g/t, stockpiled near Snow Lake, Manitoba, Canada. The tailings dump is comprised of arsenopyrite (45%), pyrrhotite (12%), and gangue constituents. The majority of the gold occurs as fully encapsulated particles or as a solid solution in the arsenopyrite grains. The chemical composition of the Snow Lake tailings (referred to as "ore" throughout the remainder of the text) is shown in Table 1.

Metal ions, such as chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) are found as trace impurities in mineral dust. Since metal ion mediated free radical generation has been implicated in many disease processes, we carried out a detailed investigation of the metabolism of these metal ions by biological redox systems and the possible oxygenated radical generation therefrom. We found that highly reactive Cr(5+) species are generated in the reduction of Cr(6+) by NADPH-dependent glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase. The reduced metal ion species react with hydrogen peroxide, to generate hydroxyl (•OH) radicals in a continuous cycle. The enzymatic catalysis processes also involves the reduction of molecular oxygen to the superoxide [(0-1 2)] radical. Thus only a trace amount of metal ions chemisorbed on mineral dusts, such as quartz, can catalyze the generation of the highly toxic oxygenated radical species from cellular hydrogen peroxide, suggesting a new biochemical mechanism for mineral dust induced chronic lung injury.

"The third phase of the Bagram Drainage System project at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan included construction of a shallow, 540-m long, 1.8-m inside diameter drainage tunnel. The tunnel penetrated mostly stiff to hard clayey and silty soils. The contractor’s Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) to use pipe-jacking with a microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) instead of the specified two-pass Earth Pressure Balance method was evaluated and supported using hand calculations. Contractor support was provided throughout the project by providing design reviews and instrumentation monitoring during construction. This paper compares the value-engineering proposal to the specified method and describes the construction conditions encountered. INTRODUCTION As part of a larger improvement project at the Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan, a shallow, 540-m long, 1.8-m inside diameter drainage tunnel was constructed to provide additional capacity for Coyote Creek to pass below several critical structures, including taxiways and the main runway, for mitigation of recurring flooding (see Figures 1 and 2). Overburden over the tunnel crown ranged from about 3 m to 5.5 m. An existing cast-in-place twin barrel concrete culvert runs approximately parallel to the new tunnel and is within about 8 m at its closest point. The contractor’s Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) to the specified two-pass Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) method (steel ribs and lagging or steel liner plate with a carrier pipe later grouted in-place) called for installation of the required drainage pipe by pipe-jacking (one-pass installation) using a slurry microtunnel boring machine (MTBM). The critical nature of the operations at the air base resulted in significant construction coordination challenges and a greater than usual need to avoid excessive settlements. Substantial restrictions were placed on drilling of investigative borings and installing instrumentation near runways and taxiways due to drill mast height. The prime contractor was SERKA TAAHHUT INSAAT A. S. (SERKA), the microtunneling subcontractor was Ludwig Pfeiffer Microtunnel GmbH & Co.KG (Pfeiffer), the jacking pipe designer was Gollwitzer Pipe and Shaft Technology GmbH (Gollwitzer), and the contractor’s tunnel engineer was Lachel & Associates, Inc. (Lachel). Lachel provided contractor support throughout the project including preparation of a VECP/Design Summary (including interpretation of existing and new geotechnical information), design reviews for jacking pipe, estimating settlement of an existing drainage structure above the new tunnel, and instrumentation planning, monitoring, and analysis during construction."

Early experiences The first double shield hard rock tunnel boring machine, manufactured in 1973, belonged to the generation of machines that were equipped with 12" dia. cutters. The experiences made with the 4.3 m diameter prototype ROBBINS mod 144-151 have been reported at the 1976 R.E.T.C. of Las Vegas (1): it might be worth recalling here that, with a specific cutter load not exceeding 10 to 12 metric ton and a 4.8 r.p.m. cutterhead speed, the average advance rate was of 350 meters per month of 21 working days with a peak production of 1,050 m of advance in 40 working days, in widely weathered and fractured granitic rocks of generally precarious stability, where a precast segmental lining was routinely installed as tunnel support. Over the 8.2 km of the Sila Tunnels, several badly crushed or sheared rock zones were bored through without major problems, even with water inflows of up to 30 1/sec. The same machine, with an improved design of the telescopic-and-floating shield area and equipped with flameproof drive motors, was taken to Colombia where, from September, 1979 to March, 1982 it drove 7.5 km of the Rio Negro-Chivor Tunnel in competent siliceous shales of up to 130 MPa at an average rate of 20 m/day.

Development of a realistic flotation model to predict its performance is of paramount importance to the processing plant and operators, a model that accounts for predictive and no-predictive maintenance simulating individual equipment downtime and the effect of it in the metallurgical performance on the flotation bank with final recoveries and grades has a huge advantage on optimizing the flotation circuit/bank in terms of mechanical and metallurgical side. The Model was developed in a dynamic environment that allows for a better and more realistic simulation of the flotation bank. The maintenance model accounts for the Failure rate, Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) and Reliability (R(t)) those characteristics are combined to a multi-compartment process model that consists of a slurry recovery model, two options of froth recovery models, entrainment and carry capacity as a final check for the system. In addition to the maintenance and process model, a dynamic dart valve model was added to the simulation in order to have a realistic model to control the slurry level at the flotation cell. The paper goes over a study case for a current flotation operation trying to explore all the elements and the simulator to optimize the Rougher flotation bank.

The first form of a surety bond was an honest handshake between two or more parties agreeing to a decision, and their personal guarantee of following through to completion. This has all changed. In 1895, the United States Treasury Department disclosed that $35 million worth of personal surety guarantees on file had become worthless. A law was then passed requiring all surety bonds, in favor of the United States, must be corporate surety bonds. Today, a surety bond is one of the nation's leading fi¬nancial instruments used to guarantee the completion of an obligation. One hundred-fifty years before cor¬porate surety bonds, outcrops near Richmond, VA, were being mined. These surface mines became under¬ground mines. Today, both are still being used to obtain a leading energy source, coal. Since that time, more than 5956 km2 (1.47 million acres) of coal mined lands have been reclaimed in the US (Coal News, August, 1987). More than 25,000 state and Federal mining permits cover¬ing 14,164 km2 (3.5 million acres) have been issued during the last 10 years. Coal production has exceeded 7.2 Gt (8 billion st). More than 5665 km2 (1.4 million acres) of mined land has been reclaimed by active coal mining opera¬tions and 267 km2 (66,000 acres) of abandoned mined lands have been re¬claimed by others. Reclamation bonds were freely writ¬ten in the 1970s. So why are they almost extinct today? Contract bond losses have been severe in the past several years, sureties reporting losses exceed¬ing 110%. But the same proof is not provided on coal reclamation bonds. A surety bond is generally required when one party has an agreement with another party, and that party wants a guarantee from a third party that a job will be completed according to the terms and conditions of a written contract. In the case of a reclamation bond, the surety company (surety) is the financial party. It extends the credit and a guarantee to the obligee (the State, Commonwealth, or Office of Surface Mining) that the principal (the coal operator/company) will complete the terms and conditions of the contract (the rules and regulations governing mining and reclamation). The Surety Association of America defines a surety bond as an agreement providing for monetary compensation should there be a failure to perform specified acts within a stated period. Webster's Dictionary defines surety in the following ways: "l: the state of being sure; 2a: a pledge or other formal engagement given for the fulfillment of an undertaking and; 3b: one who has become legally liable for the debt, de¬fault, or failure in duty of another." Banks never make accommodation loans. Either the loan is good or no loan is made. Surety companies feel the same way about surety bonds. In fact, the average person does not realize the dangers of becoming surety for another. How does a surety determine if a company is worthy of receiving surety credit? How is a coal account under¬written today for an obligation that may not be released for many years? When a surety company executes a reclama¬tion bond, it financially puts its name behind the coal company and its guaran¬tee that should the coal miner default on the obligation, the surety will fulfill the contract. How is the surety to determine if a coal company may still be in business five, 10, 20, or 40 years from today?

Namibia is one of Africa's newest nations. A German colony until 1915, it then became a South African protectorate until 1990, when it gained independence after an armed struggle that lasted more than two decades. However, no trace of past bitterness can be found today in the capital, Windhoek, or in the countryside. Namibia is now one of the safest parts of Africa. Namibia's industrial base and infrastructure have been untouched by war. Swapo, the ruling party, has embarked on a successful policy of reconciliation and economic development. The GNP per capita is a surprising $1500 (from the World Bank), one of the highest in Africa. Namibia's population stands at 1.3 million, including about 100,000 whites. Namibia is a very sparsely populated country (1.7 inhabitants per km2). About 70% of the people are farmers. Namibia has a surface area of 824,232 km2 (318,261 sq miles), about the size of France and Germany combined. The semi-arid climate and generally flat morphology make the country well suited to mineral exploration. About 40% of the country presents abundant rock outcrops. The rest is buried under the Kalahari sands. However, this cover in most of the country hardly exceeds 200 m (655 ft), and Australian technology has shown that large mineral deposits (Roxby Downs) can nowadays be found at even greater depths. Mining is Namibia's largest industry. In 1991, it accounted for 22% of the country's GDP, about 70% to 80% of its exports by value and 25% of internally generated government revenues. The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) is responsible for formulating and implementing national mineral policies. This agency has recently introduced legislation aimed at encouraging new and long-term investment in the mineral sector. The variety of Namibian mineral resources, both metallic and nonmetallic, is rivaled by few countries worldwide.

To develop strategic and tactical strategies to manage seismic hazard in a safe and economic manner, it is necessary to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of mine wide seismogenic behavior. Global mine-scale numerical stress modelling provides a means to forward predict seismic susceptibility thereby facilitating informed decision making for the development and implementation of strategic and tactical risk mitigation measures. To make forward predictions of hazard susceptibility using global stress models with reasonable confidence, it is necessary to rigorously calibrate numerical stress models to the observed history of ground reaction. This paper demonstrates quantifiable methods for calibrating numerical models and developing probabilistic prediction criterion using seismic data. The appropriate applications of model inputs (including boundary conditions, constitutive models and material parameterization) specific to global mine-scale modelling are also discussed. Lastly, this paper demonstrates how the calibration process adds value not only to informed decision making, but also to the improved understanding of site geomechanical conditions; including enhanced identification of geotechnical domains and mechanical indicators required for seismic mechanism domaining.

INTRODUCTION Early in the morning of July 16, 1979, there was a breach in the earthen retaining dam of a tailings pond at the United Nuclear Corporation's (UNC's) Church Rock uranium mill. The acidified liquid and tailings slurry spilled through the damaged portion of the retaining wall into an arroyo that is a tributary to the Rio Puerco river system. The Rio Puerco runs through Gallup, New Mexico, and eventually crosses the New Mexico-Arizona border (Fig. 1). On its way to Gallup, the Rio Puerco and its tributaries pass through land with a checkerboard pattern of ownership, with portions owned or leased by the Navajos, individuals, the Bureau of Land Management, and the State. In terms of tailings liquid volume (3.6 x 108L; 94 million gal), the UNC spill ranks as one of the largest. The mass of solids released in the slurry (10.0 x 105 kg; 1 100 tons) appears to be close to the median for accidents of this kind, however [U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), 1979]. The UNC first opened its Church Rock uranium mill in 1977 on land adjacent to acreage belonging to the Navajo tribe. The mill, which is next to the UNC Church Rock mine, is located approximately 16 km (10 miles) northeast of Gallup, New Mexico (Fig. 1). Gallup, a town of 18 000 people, is the closest population center. The region surrounding the plant site is sparsely populated by Navajos, at a density of approximately 5.8 persons/km2 (15 persons/sq mile). The UNC mill and mines employ approximately 650 persons, and the adjacent Kerr-McGee uranium mine employs about 300. The UNC mill normally processes 3.2 x 106kg/day (3 500 tons/day) of uranium ore, depositing the acidified tailings slurry in a series of three earthen holding ponds. The tailings ponds are located east of the pipeline arroyo that feeds into the Rio Puerco approximately 2.4 km (1.5 miles) from the southernmost tailings dam. The liquid portion of the tailings slurry evaporates in the ponds; hence, under normal conditions, there is no surface flow from the holding ponds to the arroyo. Both runoff from the plant site after heavy rains and possible seepage from the tailings ponds may deliver radionuclides to the arroyo-river system, however. The dam across the southernmost tailings pond was considered to be in keeping with the state of the art. However, the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Division (NMEID) had warned UNC about dangers of locating the pond over a heterogeneous geological formation. The state Engineer's Office approved of the site only after UNC agreed to strict design criteria. Others have pointed to dangers of constructing earthen dams for impoundment of uranium mill tailings (Carter, 1978). Causes of the dam break were multiple: the UNC mill filled the tailings pond to a level that exceeded permit criteria; the tailings pond was lined improperly; the dam was constructed using clay that was compacted excessively, resulting in cracking and subsequent seepage; and the unstable substrate beneath the dam permitted differential settling. The UNC Church Rock mine has continuously released dewatering effluent into the pipeline arroyo at a rate of 88.3 L/sec (1 400 gal/min) since 1968. Before 1975 this effluent was not treated; after 1975 it received precipitation treatment for removal of Ra-226. Radionuclides are also released into the river system through the dewatering of the Kerr-McGee uranium mine 1.6 km (1.0 mile) north of the UNC mill. During usual mining operations, approximately 227 L/sec (3 600 gal/min) are released into the pipeline arroyo and subsequently into the Rio Puerco. The Kerr-McGee mine began continuous release of dewatering effluent in January 1972. In 1974 Kerr-McGee began Ra-226 precipitation treatment of its dewatering releases, but NMEID data indicate that treatment has often been incomplete. The effluent from both mines has been responsible for transforming the downstream portion of the Rio Puerco from a sporadically dry riverbed into a continuously flowing stream and has contributed to the current levels of background radiation along the river system (Table 1). This paper will summarize the postspill monitoring efforts and relate the assessment of this spill to the general question of evaluating the health effects of nuclear fuel-cycle wastes. The data pertaining to the measurement of radionuclides in the Church Rock environment and the radionuclide concentrations in animals will appear in forthcoming reports. CHURCH ROCK HEALTH EFFECTS ASSESSMENT APPROACH The initial health effects evaluation involved identifying the radionuclides that were released into the river system from the tailings pond. Table 1 lists the State of New Mexico maximum permissible radionuclide concentrations for liquids released to unrestricted areas, the typical tailings liquid concentrations, and postspill river water concentrations. The tailings liquid contained comparatively high levels of Th-230, Ra-226, Pb-210, and Po-210--all of which, according to postspill river water samples, had exceeded the state maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) at one time or another. After the radionuclides in the tailings were identified, pathways through which humans could be exposed were clarified. "INTRODUCTION Crossrail is a subsidiary company of Transport for London created for the construction of a new transverse train line 118 km long between Maidenhead and Heathrow in the West, and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the East, including 21 km underground below London. Crossrail C305 Eastern Running Tunnels project is the biggest contract within Crossrail Project and involved boring 11.8 km of twin tunnels through London’s city center. Crossrail C305 Project interfaced with different contracts along its alignment and therefore logistics and solutions had to be developed to minimize disruptions or interferences with other contractors and the neighborhood. The paper describes this innovative approach. C305 CONTRACT APPROACH C305 contract was split into three drives, to be excavated by four EPB TBMs 7.1m diameter, as shown in Figure 1. •,Drive Y: 8.2km long between Limmo Peninsula and Farringdon Station in the city center •,Drive Z: 2.7km long between Pudding Mill Lane and Stepney Green Junction •,Drive G: 0.9km long between Limmo Peninsula and Victoria Dock Portal in the East. Crossrail C305 Project scope of works included the excavation of TBM tunnels and shafts at Limmo Peninsula and Stepney Green (including 17m span turnout caverns), along with the requirement to traverse station and shaft structures of other Crossrail contracts. Limmo Peninsula Site was a strategic element as it was the only access point on the tunnel alignment with sufficient available area at the surface for tunnelling logistics and also connected to the Lea River, tributary of the River Thames which facilitated marine operations for segment supply and muck removal. These were the reasons for operating Drive Y & Drive G TBMs from that location. Drive Z TBMs were originally planned to be launched from Stepney Green to Pudding Mill Lane, supplying the TBMs during Drive Z excavation from Limmo Peninsula site through the excavated section of Drive Y between Limmo and Stepney Green. During the early stages of the project, a value engineering proposal with a new tunneling strategy was agreed wherein the Pudding Mill Lane contractor would provide space for TBM assembly and operation in their portal, allowing for reversing Drive Z excavation and launching the two TBMs from Pudding Mill Lane. This optimization reduced some of the shaft requirements at Stepney Green which were contingent upon critical enabling works and provided program certainty and cost savings for the full Crossrail Project. It allowed for the reuse of both the Drive Z TBMs for Drive G excavation from Limmo to Victoria Dock Portal thereby saving on the procurement of two TBMs, in addition to easier logistics for both Drives Y&Z, therefore de-risking the TBM excavation process and the C305 Project program completion."

In open pit mining every effort is made to maintain as steep a pit slope as possible. Pi t slope angles are influenced by numerous factors some natural that are amenable to limited or no control at all and other mining technology related where a greater degree of influence can be exerted by the engineer. One such area where control is possible is the method of drilling and blasting in the pit. This paper discusses the influence of blasting techniques on the economics of pit slopes and demonstrates how balanced blasting can be used with advantage to pit wall control and improve fragmentation (thus reducing material handling costs). Microprocessor based instrumentation to monitor drill and blast performance has also been described.

This is a final progress report on a cooperative project conducted by three private feldspar companies,** North Carolina State University, and the federal Bureau of Mines. The object of the project was to reduce the feldspar tailings disposal problems at the flotation plants in the Spruce Pine area of North Carolina. The initial phase of the project revealed that high tonnages of saleable feldspar and quartz were lost in the tailings and the three feldspar companies are now concentrating their efforts on feldspar recovery, either by reclamation from the tailings as suggested by the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory or by improvements in metallurgy in the existing plants.
