"Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the biggest difference. In the world of mining, erosion can lead to small cracks, which can then lead to bigger problems that, over time, can eventually lead to a catastrophic event. However, when managed correctly, as in the case of the Manefey Slide at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, the damage can be minimized.Numerous industry conferences, technical papers, studies and resources are dedicated to these issues each year, but what is sometimes overlooked is how the erosion of personal ethics can also have life-changing effects.At the 2019 SME Minnesota Conference, April 15-17 in Duluth, MN, two inmates serving their respective prison sentences at the U.S. Federal Prison Camp in Duluth spoke to the conference about how small cracks in their ethical foundations grew over time, eventually leading each man to his new address at the minimum-security facility.The men’s full names were not released and they were introduced as Jeff and Tony. Other than the matching green uniforms, both middle-aged men could have fit in with the rest of the crowd. They are well-educated and articulate whose career paths eroded thanks to greed and careless decisions.Tony, a licensed professional engineer, enjoyed a successful career working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense. Jeff is a former senior vice president of investments who ran a well-respected investment management team. Both spoke openly about the mistakes they made and emphasized that their crimes were not flagrant violations of the black and white rules but grew from ethical violations that live in the gray area between black and white, and right and wrong.Working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), Tony said he was befriended by a wealthy man who was generous with his money. As Tony told it, a few meals with this man led to a few trips to casinos and eventually to gifts of money. The donor did not ask for anything in return, and at the time, Tony said he did not think that he was doing anything wrong. He admits now that the perception of a high-ranking officer in the DOD accepting gifts is not a good one, as it could be construed as the donor might have been trying to gain favor for future contracts; which is how it was presented in court by the prosecution team."

Greater awareness of the increasing need to develop supplementary energy sources is accelerating us towards many basic decisions regarding future utilization of mined energy materials -- uranium, coal, oil sands and oil shale. The latter material comprises a major potential source of oil which will require creation of unusually large and low-cost underground mining systems. In this paper, the author briefly outlines and analyzes several of the factors which continue to provide the somewhat unique character of oil shale nine planning and mine operation.

"The use of gas, temperature and airflow sensors to monitor mine ventilation atmospheres offers numerous safety and operational bene-fits to mines. Detection of dangerous gases, changes to airflows and temperature variations are some of the obvious benefits of using at-mospheric sensors in mines. The prediction of atmospheric conditions between sensors however is potentially difficult, and gaining full cover-age a mine will require either many sensors or a method of extrapolat-ing and predicting atmospheric conditions between and downstream from a sparser array of sensors. A dynamic simulation computer model technique is demonstrated to predict time based changes to atmosphere conditions downstream from sensors. The dynamic model predicts the time based changes to conditions throughout a mine model by simulating the mixing, addition and dilution of gases and airflow changes in incremental time steps. The advantages of this method is that a real time overview of full mine atmospheric conditions can be viewed at all locations, even areas without sensors. In addition, with careful planning and consideration of potential contaminant sources, the number of required sensors can be minimized. INTRODUCTIONMine Ventilation Sensors The importance of continuously monitoring mine atmospheres has been recognised since mining underground began and the effects of harmful gases on human health were discovered. Through the 19th and early 20th centuries, coal miners would take canaries underground with them as an early detection system against life threatening gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane (Figure 1). The canary, normally a very songful bird, would become agitated, stop singing and eventually die if not removed from these gases, signalling the miners to quickly exit the mine (Davalle, 2011)."

Since the 1980s, heap leaching of gold and silver ores has been developing rapidly and experienced widespread use in China because of its lower capital and operating costs, less time consumed in construction and specific applicability to small-to-medium scale mining operations and low grade ores. Ores treated include ordinary oxidized ores, refractory sulfide ores and even those containing deleterious elements (such as arsenic or antimony) and/or carbonaceous substances. In addition to chemical leaching agents, some micro-organisms (e.g. T-ferrooxidians and T-thiooxixians) and their biochemistry mechanism have been equally emphasized. To overcome the adverse effect caused by excessive content of fines and slimes, research and pilot experiments of agglomeration-heap leaching are currently underway at two gold mines in South China and their encouraging preliminary achievements will be briefly described as illustrations in this paper. It could be expected that heap leaching of gold and silver ores holds promise and will play an increasingly important role in China's gold industry.

For the mining industry, the Internal Revenue Code and regulations offer a range of choices in arriving at the allowable depletion. Each case is essentially unique. Two prerequisites can optimize these opportunities: communications between the mining company's tax specialists and its technical staff; and an understanding of IRS definitions. For the latter, a logical starting point is consideration of exploration and development, since they precede production and depletion is unallowable prior to production. Criteria for selecting engineering and accounting options for exploration and development indicate the necessity of interaction between these company functions to achieve the most favorable tax position.

Gravity concentration has been the main method for tin ore beneficiation, based on the significant difference of density between cassiterite and gangue in the tin ore. However, with the exhaustion of rich and coarse reserves, the proportion of tin distribution in slime be-comes as high as 50 to 70% and has a size range of -19 urn. In some sulfide tin ore, most of the tin is of the minus 10-urn size fraction, and thus slime processing has gained importance in tin ore processing. Some innovations are being developed, such as the centrifugal cone separator, belt concentrator, slime table, B-M separator, and slime flotation. Direct flotation with tolyl arsonic acid has been practiced with success.

Dynatec Mining Ltd. contracted to sink a 1500-m (4920 ft) concrete-lined shaft for Falconbridge Nickel Mines in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The shaft has an inside diameter of 6.3 m (20.5 ft) and is equipped with steel furnishings. Dynatec used the owner-supplied, 4.6-m (15.1 ft) diam, double-drum hoist to sink the shaft. For muck removal, 12.5¬t (13.8-st) buckets were used. The capacity of the concrete-¬placement buckets was 4.6 m3 (162.4 ft3). One of the unique features of the shaft sinking operation was the use of a two-¬boom, electric-hydraulic drill jumbo permanently mounted in the shaft sinking stage. An in-the-hole (ITH) drill was used to drill a 200-mm (8-in.) cut hole for the 4.8-m (16 ft), full face rounds. This paper describes the performance obtained with the electric-hydraulic drilling equipment and the high-capacity muck removal and concreting equipment.

Excessive heat exposure is among the health and safety hazards for mine workers. The nature of the underground climate makes it a convenient avenue for heat generation and accumulation from several heat sources, including autocompression, equipment and heat from strata. This study investigates the effects of clothing insulation and acclimation on the thermal comfort of mine workers exposed to heat in underground working environments. Several clothing ensembles were considered to analyze the effect of the thermal resistance of clothing on the workers’ thermal comfort. To investigate the impact of clothing insulation, the thermal comfort limit of an underground miner was calculated in the form of maximum allowable exposure time for an eight-hour shift.

In 1962 a computerized data processing system was first installed and programmed for the grading of direct-shipping iron ore from the Sept-Iles terminal of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. Over the years several changes and improvements have been incorporated into this system. It is the purpose of this paper to describe its present operation and features. Sept-Iles is located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, 500 miles north east of Montreal. The direct-shipping ore is received by railroad from Schefferville, 320 miles to the north in the Knob Lake Iron Range of New Quebec and Labrador. The shipping season extends from mid-March to December. The maximum tonnage handled in this period being 13,045,000 long tons in 1959. Crude ore receipts for 1974 amounted to 6,568,000 tons of direct-shipping and 4,700,000 tons of plant feed material from Schefferville. This was augmented by 4,447,000 tons of concentrate and 7,572,000 tons of pellets from Labrador City 200 miles north of Sept-Iles. The direct-shipping ore has come from as many as ten mines, and grade variations, even-within the same mines, have been sufficient to require blending for uniform, acceptable cargos. Shipments of low phosphorous, non bessemer and manganiforous iron ore are made, to Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan with grade variations to meet customers requirements.

The present trend toward concentration of mining activities into fewer sections of a coal mine and application of automation and remote control technologies favor utilization of the longwall mining method. Longwall mining also offers the potential for improving safety and productivity, better ground control and higher levels of recovery. The production potential of a longwall operation is determined by the interaction of several factors including the rate of face advance, the thickness of extraction, the speed of cutting and hauling equipment, the physical dimensions of a longwall panel, and the reliability and availability of the equipment. Some of these factors are dictated by the environment in which the extraction process is to be undertaken. Some other factors, however, can be manipulated in order to optimize the production of the system. The objective of this paper is to develop a stochastic model to simulate the production operations in longwall mining. The activities and parameters that affect the production potential of the longwall operations and the relationships between the activities are identified. An attempt is made to verify these relationships through the use of existing data. The model is then used as a computer simulator to investigate the effects of various activities and parameters on the production capacity of a panel.

Performing a magnetizing roast in a furnace or kiln is a well-established technology. However, the use of microwave heat for the magnetization of hematite in the beneficiation of ferruginous bauxite is a new approach. This paper reports on an investigation of this procedure, which is followed by comminution and magnetic separation. The results of this investigation indicate that a nonmagnetic product containing 80% A1203 and 2.5% Fe203 with a recovery of 80% can be made from a crude bauxite ore containing 55.9% A1203 and 5.6% Fe203. This product is suitable for refractory use. The mechanism is explained by the ability of the microwave radiation to heat specific points within the bauxite. These heat-specific points are at the location of iron minerals. In a reduced atmosphere, the microwaves promote faster conversion of the iron minerals to a magnetic phase, which improves the magnetic-separation process.

When systematically compared to other engineering fields, mining engineering is distinctive in 1) having a total systems concern. 2) dealing with encumbered space and 3) requiring full spectrum practice. The total systems concern results from having to design and then co-ordinate in space and time several major systems: excavating and bulk handling, ground control, life support and normal support. This requirement favors a generalist rather than a specialist approach. In coping with encumbered space especially in underground coal mining, the uncertainties of geologic conditions are compounded by tightness, roughness, remoteness and hazards. Into this difficult setting the total systems * complex is "stuffed," adding congestion and interference. Because of significant ground deterioration a flexible "rapid in-out" approach is usually vital to mining. Full spectrum practice arises from the need to manage, as well as to plan and design, a labor intensive operation. Since market conditions can also fluctuate most aspects of administration are needed in many respects, mining engineering functions relative to civil engineering in a way similar to industrial to mechanical engineering, with encumbered space being crucial. On this basis stress is placed on: 1) personal relations, 2) field work and 3) entrepreneurship, viewing time as money. Specific recommendations for improving engineering, safety and management and leadership are made. Since most new deposits are marginal, by applying these recommendations with high technology they could possibly now be mined on a widespread basis.

This proposal, based on the CIEMAN Cajamarca - Hualgayoc initiative, focuses on “Transforming Abandoned Mine Lands’’ We aim to study and assess the feasibility of an innovative rehabilitation method. Contaminated soils will be moved from the upper to the lower site, encapsulated with geosynthetic barriers, and covered with topsoil. The decontaminated upper area will be used for planting trees and large-stemmed plants for hiking and tourism, while the lower encapsulated area will support livestock and short- stemmed crops. This study will evaluate the economic viability and multi-use potential of this technique, promoting sustainable land recovery in Cajamarca, Peru.

Low-rank coal (LRC) drying processes are generally categorized by operating temperature, drying environment and type of feed (either sized or ground coal). Within these broad categories, drying processes differ according to the type of drying equipment and methods of quenching and stabilizing the dried products. This paper focuses on the produce quality of various LRC drying processes including conventional low and high temperature evaporative drying and non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying. The former may be preferred if the dried product can be utilized immediately, but moisture re-absorption, spontaneous heating and fines production during handling are problems associated with longer term storage, transportation and utilization. Methods for reducing these problems are discussed. Hydrothermal processing is an advanced technology featuring high pressure, non-evaporative drying, which solves stability problems by producing a liquid fuel.

INTRODUCTION The small mining company faces the dilemma of how to finance the development of its properties because it doesn't have the financial resources to pay for the development costs from its own funds and doesn't have the financial strength which will enable it to borrow the money needed for development. However, with a little imagination and the right set of circumstances, a financing can be arranged for the small mining company. This paper is an attempt to describe the fundamental steps on how such financing can be obtained --in other words--what is required to provide ad- equate capital at a low cost for developing and bringing a mining property into production. Innovative financing follows from this. The basic keys for building and maintaining a successful mining company are "the four M's": Management, Market, Mine, and Money. The writer believes their order of importance is as presented and each is a building block required in order to obtain the type of financing that best suits the borrower and lender. MANAGEMENT Management must be experienced, highly organized, realistic, able to take advantage of opportunities and fulfill promises. Mine financing requires a variety of skills and concentration on the part of management. Management should have a thorough understanding derived from experience in geology, construction, mining and metallurgy and environment, marketing, and financial matters. Management must realistically visualize what will be produced at what cost and truly evaluate the risks associated so the proper security can be correctly designed. Since risk cannot be eliminated, the objective of management is to identify the risk which will be present in a given venture and assess the level of that risk which will be acceptable to the firm. Generally the risk which is present is subject to little or no modification. After management identifies and measures the acceptable risk the firm will proceed in a way that it will be least exposed. Management must determine its long-term objectives and strategies within the context of a constantly changing world. This question must be addressed before examining the sorts of risk which affect the development and operation of a specific property. The compilation and interpretation of "hard data" by competent people is good to a point but the experience and instinct of seasoned individuals are the important factors in management choosing a long-term direction for the corporation. The attitude towards risk greatly affects the goals of the corporation. Major risks in a mining project can be placed in four categories: 1. Market - Price, demand, substitution. 2. Costs - Capital, operating, financial. 3. Regulation. 4. Taxation. The feasibility study for a project is the fundamental tool used in the management of risk. Management should employ an experienced team with an established and well-understood set of ground rules for the preparation and assembly of a feasibility study. The necessary degree of realism is built into all levels of the study and if the project is technically feasible, the company's hurdle rate is then used to discount the base-case project cash flow in order to determine its financial viability. Understanding the geological significance of the mineral deposit is critical. There should be strong interplay among the pure regional geologist, the detailed mine geologist, the mining engineer, and the metallurgical engineer. The collaboration among these different disciplines will yield a feasibility study that is more reliable. The essence of this work must be appreciated and understood by the executives planning the financing. It is vital that they thoroughly understand the risks and make the proper risk assessments to cope with our rapidly changing market environment. Projecting future revenue values is paramount and is subject to much estimation. One way to mitigate fluctuations and the risk of falling prices is by selling production for future delivery. MARKET Since mining is a worldwide industry it is mandatory that bankers be aware of what is occurring in the marketplace, both foreign and domestic. In August 2011, the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) contacted mining institutes and related societies internationally to assess their interest in participating in coordination of the review of the South African Code for Mineral Valuation (SAMVAL) with reviews of other mineral valuation standards. The main mineral valuation standards are the CIMVal Standard of The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the VALMIN Code of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), the SAMVAL Code, and the extractive industries? guidance note of the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC), Valuation of Properties in the Extractive Industries, GN 14, designed for application within the full set of International Valuation Standards (IVSs). By January 2012, SAIMM had concluded that the level of respondent interest was adequate to organize a meeting. A meeting was scheduled for April 18, 2012 in Brisbane, Australia in conjunction with a VALMIN mineral valuation conference organized by the AusIMM. The stated purpose of the meeting was to develop an accord on terms of reference for pursuing harmonization of mineral asset valuation standards adopted by the participating mineral institutes. SME decided that, although it has not developed its own mineral valuation standard, it should participate in the Brisbane meeting and the harmonization process, as also did the American Institute of Minerals Appraisers (AIMA).

Pillars are used as the primary support structures for underground mining to maintain stability by supporting the over laying strata. In the case of horizontal seams, the pillars are typically subjected to axial loading due to the weight of the overburden and/or abutment stresses, while in the case of inclined seams they are subjected to oblique loading due to both the vertical and horizontal in-situ stress.

The Cross City Tunnel comprises 2km of a new underground traffic route in Sydney, Australia. The route is very complex, involving some six separate tunnels and three underground Y-junctions. For almost 200m the six tunnels run parallel at different level sunder William Street, Sydney. Almost all of the route runs adjacent to the City Business District of Sydney and adjacent to or below many major buildings and services. The planning and design of this project is described. The geometric arrangement is achieved with a strong dependence on 3D road design packages. Road alignment constraints include land acquisition and proximity to existing tunnels and basements as well as maintaining separation from the other tunnels in the scheme. Geotechnical and hydrogeological studies are described. Findings discussed include the high horizontal stress field in the Sydney area and investigation of incised palaeochannels on the route. Methods of design for the tunnels and Y-junctions are described, as well as methods of settlement prediction for the buildings and services. The latter includes the settlement assessment for more than 200 buildings, many in excess of 20 storeys, as well as services including all of the city railway lines in Sydney.

Two modified polyacrylamide flocculants, namely polyacrylamide with glycolic acid functionality (PAMG), and a copolymer of acrylamide with N-acryloyl-[T]- aminobutyric acid (HPVP), were synthesized, characterised and evaluated for selective separation in apatite/quartz and apatite/dolomite/calcite systems, respectively. PAMG flocculant was found selective in the separation of tricalcium phosphate (TCP) from its mixtures with quartz at acidic to neutral pH range. The selectivity deteriorated at alkaline pH. In contrast, polyacrylic acid (PAA) flocculant was found most effective only in the alkaline pH range. HPVP flocculant (even though flocculating all three minerals namely apatite, dolomite and calcite) was observed to be quite selective for the separation of calcite from apatite-dolomite minerals in single mineral tests in the presence of sodium hexametaphosphate dispersant at neutral pH. There was, however, no selectivity observed during tests on synthetic mixtures. This loss in selectivity is attributed to the phenomenon of hetero-flocculation, as reported earlier, for separation in an apatite-dolomite system with polyethylene oxide.
