Wet kata cooling power (WKCP) measured using a kata thermometer is a well-known heat stress index in mining industries. Although over the years several researchers have proposed different heat indices and indicated the limitations of the kata thermometer, it is still being used in many areas, especially in the South African gold mining industry, mainly because of its simplicity and rapidity of assessment. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the newly developed empirical expression for WKCP, and some of the more prevalent empirical expressions. The analysis presented based on a regression technique aims to assess the disagreement between model predictions and actual measurements. It is found that the WKCP expresses bioclimatic interaction quite well under the specific parameter of interaction that explains the harsh thermal environment and air condition, such as metabolic activity, the person’s clothing, and the velocity of the air in which the person is working. The statistical analysis shows that the WKCP exhibits significant estimates to thermal stress under lower air velocities, light clothing, and higher metabolic activity rates.

INTRODUCTION On April 14, 1994, the joint venture of Kiewit Construction Company and Kenny Construction Company was awarded a 76 million dollar contract for the construction of the New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels in Washington D.C. The Notice to Proceed was given on May16, 1994 and scheduled completion is September 1997. This project is one of five contracts for the Mid-City E Line as part of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)Greenbelt Route. Once completed, the Mid-City E Line subway tunnels will connect service between the U Street-Cardozo and Fort Totten stations (See Figure 1). The New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels project consists of approximately 6800 feet of twin single track subway tunnels, three vertical shafts, associated utility work and comprehensive restoration work. Section E4b involved two methods of tunneling along the project alignment. The first method consisted of the well known soft ground open face shield driven tunnel and the second method consisted of tunnels driven using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) . The NATM section of twin tunnels begins at the Buchanan Vent Shaft and proceeds approximately 2630 feet under Rock Creek Cemetery, including the Farragut Emergency Access Shaft and connects approximately 390 feet beyond to the existing Fort Totten running tunnels (See Figure 2). Special considerations had to be given to the portion of the tunnel alignment which passed beneath Rock Creek Cemetery. The analyses and subsequent selection of the tunnel support system were based on anticipated geological conditions and the sensitive tunnel alignment. The New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels project was the second soft ground NATM project in Washington D.C. The first, by no coincidence, was completed at the adjacent Fort Totten Station and Running Tunnels Project by Mergentime/Hochtief, AJV. Currently, on a nearby WMATA jobsite, the J.F. Shea Construction Company has started a third NATM soft ground tunnel. Red mud has been reported as a potential resource for lithium. To investigate the leaching behavior of lithium, a lithium-rich red mud was neutralized with hydrochloric or oxalic acid and then leached with acetic acid. When red mud was neutralized using dilute hydrochloric acid, about 58 to 60 percent of lithium was leached with 25 percent acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min, while more than 95 percent of sodium and 85 percent of calcium were dissolved in the leachate solution. When oxalic acid was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lower lithium leaching efficiencies of about 42 to 47 percent were observed. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the same conditions. In this study, 25 percent (v/v) of acetic acid at 85 °C for 60 min was demonstrated to be the optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid-neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results are useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

In 2024, Capstone Copper Corp commissioned a new sulfide flotation plant at Mantoverde in the Atacama region of Chile to process copper ore at a design rate of 32,000tpd. The pyrite associated with the copper ore body contains cobalt in solid solution, with Co replacing Fe in the pyrite matrix. As per the existing sulfide flotation flowsheet most of the pyrite is depressed and sent to tailings via the cleaner scavenger tail stream. A new project considers the recovery of the pyrite from the cleaner-scavenger tails via froth flotation to produce a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate, which is then leached via the existing dynamic copper leach pad to oxidize the pyrite and dissolve the cobalt. The cobalt is recovered from the solution by treating a bleed stream of copper SX raffinate through a continuous, counter-current ion exchange (CCIX) facility. This approach to by-production of cobalt confers numerous benefits, including reduced costs compared with alternative cobalt recovery processes, reduced acid consumption in the heap leach, increased copper production, and reduced acid mine drainage potential due to the removal of pyrite from the mill tailings.

The coagulation of dispersions of weakly magnetic oxide mineral ultrafines (such as natural hematite or chromite) in an external magnetic field can be described from inter-particle forces. Essentially, coagulation occurs when the short range London-van der Waals interactions and the long range magnetic forces outweigh the stabilizing electrical double layer repulsion. From the classical colloid chemistry theory, we have calculated the various components of the potential energy for different sized particles at a series of ionic strengths and magnetic field intensities. We have related this theoretical analysis to experimental studies where the magnetic field-induced coagulation of ultrafines of natural hematite and chromite in aqueous suspensions was investigated using a laboratory scale electromagnetic solenoid. The experimental results relate the coagulation process (as determined by magneto-sedimentation analysis) to the particle size, the slurry pH and the external magnetic field. In the magnetic fields, maximum coagulation occurred near the pH of zero point of charge (pHzpc) of the minerals (where the electrostatic double layer repulsion was reduced to a minimum) enabling the particles to enter the "primary minimum" energy sink. On the other hand, in cases where the electrostatic repulsion was not suppressed, then the long range magnetic forces enabled coagulation to occur in the "secondary minimum". This caused the formation of chains which appeared to be relatively stable during sedimentation.

The mining industry is one of the major energy consumers in Namibia. Energy costs increase the operating costs of Namibian mines, in particular, the processing plants, and result in an overall increase of production costs. A substantial part of the energy used is directly imported from South Africa. The cost of energy has been increasing rapidly in the past few years and will most likely continue to do so in the future. In 2015, the average wholesale price for energy from national power utility NamPower was US$87/MWh after rising more than 12 percent annually in the two previous years. At peak times, which are early in the morning and late in the evening, imported-energy prices are extremely high and have to be factored into the electricity tariffs. This problem is expected to intensify due to a projected 4 percent annual increase in energy demand. A major target of the Namibian mines, therefore, is to consider possible ways to address energy-saving challenges and to investigate possibilities for the mines to generate electricity internally during peak times. This is in alignment with the mines’ strategic plans and objectives to reduce total energy consumption and costs from both national and foreign electricity suppliers. In this paper, we explore addressing some of the key energy consumption and optimization challenges through process energy reuse and solar energy production to decrease demand for imported energy through a case study carried out in cooperation with Skorpion Zinc Mine and Refinery.

The today status of air pollution control legislation and regulations can best be described as an exaggerated state of environmental limbo. The '70's began but one and one-half months ago yet it already has been very appropriately named "the decade of the environment." This certainly will be the decade for new legislation - new regulations and hopefully "Clean Air." Already Washington is faced with legislators playing "pollution politics" to the crowds. Students have redirected their efforts from Vietnam to the cleansing of the environment and everyone including the man on the street has become an environ¬mental expert. This is the decade we all face, but where are we today? Pollution is not a new problem. It has been with us for centuries and while much is left to be done, much has already been accomplished. I will try to make some comparisons of what I believe to be the good and bad points in the national air pollution control picture and hopefully will generate within each of you sufficient concern as to which comparisons are sound.

The US economy grew at a rate of 4% in 1994 and the gross domestic product rose to $6.74 trillion. With 261 million people - 605,000 in mining, including petroleum -the United States has l 10 million dwelling units and 200 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing units authorized in 1994 rose 14% to 1.4 million units. New car production rose 11 % to 6.6 million units, while truck and bus production rose 30% to 5.2 million units. The inflation rate was less than 3% and the prime rate of interest averaged 7.15%. The producer price index (1982 = 100) for fuels and related products and power was down 4% to 78, while metals and metal products rose 5% to 125. Chemicals and allied products rose 3% to 132, and non-metallic mineral products rose 3% to 124. The merchandise trade deficit rose 25% to $166 billion. Disorder in the former Soviet Union led to substantial dumping of mineral materials. With vast mineral resources, the former Soviet Union land area totaled 22.4 million km2 (8.6 million sq miles). In comparison, the North Ameri¬can Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) area (United States, Canada and Mexico) totals 21.4 million km2 (8.3 million sq miles).

The growing demand and a diminishing supply of conventional crude oil in North America are bringing about an ever increasing interest in the so-called "synthetic fuels". With one commercial plant already in full production, another in the planning and engineering stage, and still others being seriously considered, the Athabasca tar sands is proving to be a leading center of interest. Here, and in the closely related deposits, reserves in place total over 700 billion barrels.1 This major source of new oil is about ready to play a significant role in the filling of ever increasing market demand. When and if fully developed, the Athabasca tat sands could make both Canada and the United States substantially independent of all off-shore supplies of crude for many years to come. Its product, a high-quality, low-sulphur synthetic crude, is beginning to enter the market place at a most favourable time.

In a world of technology and electronic communication, it is easy to forget what engineers do best with a problem: sitting around a table, exchanging views and ideas with sketches and respecting everyone?s view. This was the approach adopted in the project to arrive at a solution for the cross passage opening sup-port for the Seattle University Link Extension. Schedule and space constraints usually impede concurrent cross passage excavation and tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation. And where the space is constrained, opening support solutions that maximize available cross sections are of great benefit. While there are a number of solutions that minimize space, some of these solutions can require expensive steelwork and extensive drilling and fixing. However, following a detailed round-the-table discussion of the options and constraints, it was identified that a shotcrete shell would not only limit obstruction of the space during installation, but also permit easy installation, particularly around services, and avoid costly steelwork and drilling and fixing.

The Kivcet process is technologically the most advanced of the new lead smelting processes which have been developed over the past decade construction of the first commercial scale Kivcet lead smelter which has been designed by KHD Humboldt Wedag for Sociedad Complejo Metalurgico de Karachipampa is at present nearing completion in Bolivia. Some of the measures taken to minimise emission of harmful elements as well as methods employed to minimise energy consumption in the design of the smelter, are presented. Results of recent testwork which have added to the flexibility of the process are summarised.

The Alabama tar sands of the Hartselle Sandstone formation present a more difficult problem in primary extraction than do the Athabasca tar sands. In contrast to the Athabasca tar sands, the Alabama tar sands are "oil wetted" and the contained tar, or bitumen, is of much higher viscosity. A physical beneficiation scheme was developed in which clean sand from an external source was used as a scrubbing medium. High intensity scrubbing liberated the tars which are readily recovered by froth flotation. Locked cycle tests have shown that, after the use of an initial ration of clean sand, the system produced enough new clean sand to be self sustaining.

"The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the dosage of sodium hypochlorite as activator on the flotations of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, with a focus on activation-flotation kinetics. Four flotation kinetic models were applied to test data using 1stOpt statistical analysis software to estimate the relationships between the maximum flotation recovery rates for the depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the flotation rate constants and the sodium hypochlorite dosages. Within the range investigated, the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite were obtained at 2.5 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with zinc recovery rate of 93.8 percent and 3 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with copper recovery rate of 94.6 percent, respectively, after four minutes of flotation. A second-order model with rectangular distribution of flotabilities gave the best fit to test data collected at various sodium hypochlorite dosages. For the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the respective equations of their flotation models were derived and presented.IntroductionCyanidation tailings are the solid residues generated by gold plants that use cyanide to extract gold (Lv, Ding and Qian, 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013). Because of increasing demand for gold, the Chinese gold industry has developed rapidly, with production amounting to 451.799 tons in 2014, an increase of 5.5 percent from 2013. Chinese gold production has been the highest in the world for eight consecutive years. As a result, more than 2.45 million tons of cyanidation tailings are estimated to be discharged into tailings ponds every year (Li et al., 2010; Lv, Ding and Qian et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2012), and approximately 300 million tons of cyanide tailings are stockpiled in China, with the potential to cause serious environmental pollution as well as death to wildlife (Adams and Lloyd, 2008; Donato et al., 2007; Hewitt, Breuer and Jeffery, 2012; Velasquez-Lopez et al., 2011; Stephen et al., 2009; Zagury, Oudjehani and Deschenes, 2004). Concerns over cyanidation tailings are not exclusively environmental but also economic, as tailings occupy considerable land area, and tailings storage facilities increase the production costs of gold enterprises (Donato et al., 2007). Tailings often contain other valuable metals such as zinc, lead and copper. For example, the cyanidation tailings of Gaoyao Hetai Gold Plant in Guangdong Province contain 2.5 percent copper (Cu), 0.31 percent lead (Pb), 0.23 percent zinc (Zn) and 15.36 percent iron (Fe) (Shi, 2008), and the tailings of Tianshui Gold Plant in Gansu Province contain 1.94 percent Cu, 5.96 percent Pb, 0.27 percent Zn and 24.62 percent Fe. Cyanidation tailings have therefore been increasingly viewed as a secondary resource rather than waste."

The White Pine orebody is characterized by a high lateral stress or highly faulted and joined conditions. Because of these difficult conditions roof support has always been a main concern. Mechanical bolts were widely used in the early seventies; however, it became apparent that major improvements in ground control were required if safe operation at White Pine was to be continued. The first step was taken in 1973-1974 with the testing of resin bolting. Record of caves and roof-falls with either type of support demonstrated superiority of resin bolting versus mechanical bolting - Safety was dramatically improved which was the absolute first consideration; however resin bolting was still more expensive than mechanical bolting. In order to generalize resin bolt installation, the second step was therefore to acquire special roof bolters compatible with resin bolting. The machine was to enhance the safety of the operation. This was achieved by the acquisition of the Secoma bolting machine equipped with an automatic bolting turret. Being a "hands off" operation the safety of the operator is total. Using a fixed taped attachment of the drill steel on the chuck a front guide and an automatic regulator torque thrust on the steel drilling in small diameter was possible. Being a fully automatic process only one operator is required per machine versus two operators with the conventional machines. The two main objectives were reached enabling the extension of resin bolting to the whole mine.

Linear meridional zones of bad roof conditions have been frequently encountered in producing collieries working the Permian age Lithgow seam in the western coalfield of New South Wales. The prediction of such zones ahead of mining is desirable for reasons of both safety and economics. In March, 1981, we carried out an experimental, three-component in-seam seismic survey at Invincible Colliery to discover whether such zones have any unambiguous seismic effect. The underground survey was the first of its kind to be attempted in an Australian mine. The data quality was excellent with the spectra broadband and clear. Polarisation analysis disclosed two modes: one compressional; the other shear horizontal. The SH model was clearly dispersive and well gound to the plane of the seam. Modal velocities decreased by up to 15% at the fracture-swarm site. There is a strong suggestion on the RLS maps obtained here that the distributed fault zone is acting as a composite scatterer of channel waves. The P-SV and SH wave tomograms obtained show, in a general way, the distribution of stress in the coal panel.

The recently completed In-Pit Crushing and Conveying Project at Phelps Dodge's Morenci Mine is rated among the world's leading materials handling projects. The operation involves the crushing and transport of more than 109,000 tonnes per day of copper ore, utilizing regenerative conveyors capable of providing over 5.5 megawatts (7,000 hp) of equivalent electrical energy. "Premature and unplanned mine closure can result in significant adverse impacts on the environment and community and need to be managed appropriately. Risk management techniques can reduce the negative impacts and risks of early mine closure. Risk Assessment 3D Model, is an efficient tool to quantify risk. The aim of this paper is to identify the mine closure risks in Choghart iron ore mine, and calculate the overall mine closure risk level. The result shows that 51.4% of assessed risks have low risk level and the overall risk level of early mine closure is low. Keywords: mine closure, risk assessment 3D model, Choghart iron ore mine INTRODUCTION The modern mining life-cycle can be divided into three main stages; exploration, mining (opening and production) and post mining (mine closure, and reclamation). Mine closure is the critical component of the modern mining life-cycle and it refers to the period of time when the operational stage of a mine has permanently ceases (Heikkinen et al, 2008). Planned closure occurs due to the depletion of ore reserves, but sometimes it is premature. Laurance (2006) shows that only 25% of mine closure in the past 30 years was due to resource depletion and in 75% of the cases the mines were closed for the other reasons. Ghanbari et al (2010) demonstrated that 48.6 % of copper mine closure in the past 100 years was due to resource depletion and 51.4 % of copper mines have been closed due to other reasons. The main reasons of premature mine closure are as follow (Laurance, 2006; Ghanbari et al, 2010; Maiti, 2013): • Economic, (low commodity prices or high costs) • Geological, (over-estimation of grade and tonnage) • Geotechnical (adverse geotechnical conditions) • Technical (equipment failure) • Regulatory, due to safety or environmental breaches • Social or community pressures • Closure of downstream industry or markets • Flooding or inrush Minaei Mobtaker and Osanloo (2013) developed a mine closure prediction model based on the data collected from closed iron ore mines in the past 100 years. They showed that economic factors, exhaustion of ore reserve and geological conditions are the main reasons of iron ore mine closure. They treated mine closure as a decision making problem in order to predict the causes of mine closure, including the uncertainties of some mine plan parameter such as iron ore price, production and consumption."

Meramec Mining Company, a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corporation and St. Joe Minerals Corporation, is engaged in the mining, concentrating, and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during an exploration program to discover new lead orebodies. An airborne magnetometer survey which was run by the U. S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Geological Survey, and several min¬ing companies was published in 1950 and showed an anomaly in the Pea Ridge area. Test holes drilled in 1953 and 1954 revealed the presence of a large orebody of probable commercial significance; additional drilling in 1956 and 1957 provided confirmation of this. Meramec Mining Company was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began in the latter part of that year. The Pea Ridge orebody lies under about 1300 feet of sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick, and lies in an approximate east-west delineation. The orebody dips about 800S and is of unknown depth. The ore is primarily high grade magnetite with smaller zones of specular hematite, The Pre-cambrian wall rock is rhyolite porphyry. This work evaluates the effectiveness of similitude theory in predicting the draft of a rubber tire loader’s bucket during initial penetration. The work uses 1:16 and 1:8 scale models of an 18-t capacity load haul dump, scaled with the Buckingham Pi theorem, to evaluate the prediction of draft and penetration under different operating and different dynamic conditions. We hypothesized that the observed relationships between draft and longitudinal penetration and the operating and dynamic conditions will hold true for an upscaled model. Similarly, we hypothesized that the results of experiments conducted with the smaller scale model should predict the draft on an upscaled model.

Introduction and Historical Background The office and mining operations of Pacific Asbestos Corporation are located near Copperopolis, California in the foothills of the Sierras about fifty miles east of Stockton. This is historic country in the heart of the old Mother Lode gold district. Mark Twain's famous story of the jumping frog, written here, is still commemorated in an annual contest in Calaveras County,' and the camp at Poker Flats, described by Bret Harte, was only a few miles from the present mine.2 Joaquin Murrieta, the famous Mexican bandit started his three year reign of terror in this vicinity,3 and Black Bart, the P08 laureate of the stagecoach robbers, held up his first stage at Funk Hill, just three miles north of the mine. His last robbery was at almost the place, on the top of the hill overlooking the Stanislaus River ferry crossing. Although this was his favorite country, and he traveled extensively through it, he was not a credit to his acclaimed profession of Mining Engineer because there is no evidence that he ever recognized the asbestos, and he was finally caught as a consequence of the robbery at the ferry.4 One of the old stagecoach roads crossed the Stanislaus River at the mine site, and the ferry landing may still be seen from the main haul road into the pit. The road itself is partly buried under the rock dumps. In spite of its location and apparently prominent exposure, the first work on the asbestos deposit was not recorded until 1904.5 Development of the present operations was started in 1959 by Jefferson Lake Asbestos Corporation, a subsidiary of Jefferson Lake Sulphur Company. Management control of the company changed hands several times and it was later reorganized under the name of Pacific Asbestos Corporation. In December, 1968, a controlling interest was acquired by H. K. Porter Company, Inc. Figure (1) shows the mill and office buildings as seen from a site near the entry road. The offices are at the left with the mill warehouse in the foreground. The conveyor at left center carrys mine concentrates up the hill from the crusher. In the background are the dry rock storage building and mill tailings piles. Since the beginning of mining operations in 1962, seven and three-quarter million tons of ore and fifteen million tons of waste have been removed from the open pit which now measures about 1400 x 1800 feet at its widest points. The lowest operating level is at an elevation of 726 feet about 325 feet below the original surface. Figure (2) shows the open pit looking toward the west end. The main haul road can be seen along the side of the pit. A shovel is operating at the bottom of the pit while a front end loader on the level above provides ore for blending. In the background are rock dumps for waste stripping. The company markets an annual production of 30-35,000 tons of chrysotile fibre in groups 4 through 7, under the Mother Lode Brand
