Some fundamental facts regarding noise are summarized. Guidelines for reducing plant noise are indicated, and simple means are discussed for determining, whether quieting of specific equipment items will reduce plant noise significantly. Design and installation recommendations are made for quieting chutes by means of dams, impact cushioning pads, impact shields, and damping materials, and for quieting; screens by means of resilient decks, lined screen bottoms, drive mechanism enclosures, and side plate additions. A brief account is appended of the wear and productivity performance of resilient materials observed in three cleaning plants.

It has been said that safety promotion passes through four stages--the band-playing, the machine-guarding, the protective equipment, and finally the educational stage; the last is the most important in the development of the safety program. It has been estimated that only 15 percent of accidents can be pre- vented by machine guarding and protective equipment; the other 85 percent must be stopped by the safety efforts of the individual workers and their supervisory officials, and one of the fundamentals of safety work is the education of workers to develop safety consciousness or safety mindedness. One way of educating men to think about safety is by the use of posters. Safety engineers at the Calumet 2 Hecla mines in Michigan have been conduct- ing a safety contest among the men by the use of posters of an unusual type in addition to those usually employed to illustrate bad practices and to display the number of days without a lost-time accident. The first requisite for the success of the safety poster is a good artist or draftsman; in the poster contest instituted at the Calumet & Hecla mines two sheets were prepared illustrating various conditions in the slope workings, including a large number of unsafe practices. The object of the contest was to get the men to think about safety through criticism of the unsafe conditions displayed on the posters. The following notice accom- panied the posters:

The size and accessibility of the Minnesota manganiferous iron ore deposits make them attractive as a potential source of ferromanganese, which is essential in the production of steel. For several years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting experiments to determine the feasibility of producing ferromanganese from these ores by a three-step process which involves (1) the smelting of the ores in the blast furnace to produce a high-phosphorus spiegel; (2) the treatment of the spiegel produced from step 1 in an electric or open-hearth furnace to separate the manganese from the phosphorus and the iron; and 3) the smelting of the high-manganese slag from step 2 to produce ferromanganese. The details of the first two steps of the process and the results of tests with the experimental furnaces have been given in previous reports.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing and grinding methods, and costs, at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The, cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Evans Pipe Co., Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is investigating hydrometallurgical processing techniques to recycle metals from semiconductors and other advanced materials. Cadmium and tellurium were recovered from mixed CdTe/CdS scrap produced in the manufacture of thin-film photovoltaic devices. Selective cadmium dissolution was achieved using oxygen-pressure leaching in dilute sulfuric acid. Leaching the scrap for 90 min at 110° C in 2.2NH2S04 under 400 psig 02 yielded 97% Cd extraction; however, cadmium content of the residue ranged between 4% and 7%. Soluble iron was added to the lixiviant to catalyze oxidation of the CdS component. Tellurium and sulfur remained in the leach residue primarily in the elemental form. The iron and tellurium were removed from the cadmium-rich leach liquor by adjusting the pH to 5.3. The cadmium was recovered as cadmium sulfate crystals by evaporating the solution. Alternative leaching and purification schemes are discussed.

"INRODUCTIONSedimentary deposits of titaniferrous magnetite occur at various localities in the eastern foothills of the Teton Ranse in Deer Lodge County, Mont. The Choteau deposit was examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer in August 1942. An exploration project was recommended.Core drilling exploration was begun in June 1945; it was concluded in August 1945, Seventy-six holes were drilled. This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau of Mines exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral, deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective, the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contri¬bution to national security and economy. During the course of the work: it was found desirable to investigate the sensitizing action of nitrostarch in mixtures of ammonium nitrate containing low percentages of this material. Data were derived as to the sensitivity to decomposition by heat and the completeness of detonation and,of detonation of straight ammonium nitrate, as compared with ammonium nitrate-nitrostrarch mixtures containing 1 to 10 per cent of nitrostarch.The ammonium nitrate was a sample of coated material obtained from the salvage of amatol shells. Marquette's first reported the existence of iron In Missouri in 1673. Recorded production wan begun in 1815, increasing in size and importance until 1888, when the low price of iron resulting from Minnesota's production of high-grade ore caused most of the operators to close down. Missouri's iron production came from three types of ore: (l) Brown ores, including the deposits of primary and secondary limonites in southeast and southwest Missouri, (2) hematites of the filled sinks, including the ores of Central Ozark district, and (3) specular ores in porphyry, including the deposits of the St. Francois Mountains.

In the period of 1942-1945, medium-grade, oxidized, lead-silver ore was mined and shipped from the Diamond district near Eureka, Nev. An encouraging tonnage of low-grade ore was developed during these operations and partly blocked-out for future mining. If the low-grade ore could be treated profitably, further development of the district would result, and production of an important strategic metal might be increased. A representative sample of Diamond district ore was obtained through the Reno office of the Mining Division for the studies described in this report. The sample consisted of lumps and fines of a highly altered siliceous rock containing much earthy red hematite and some granular black hematite. Examination with the binocular microscope showed the lead carbonate mineral, cerussite, in seams and disseminated in the hematite. No zinc or silver minerals were identified, and no sulfide minerals were present. Analyses of the ore showed:

Beryllium occurs in the Honeycomb Hills area in volcanic tuff similar to the more extensive berylliferous tuff occurring 20 miles east at Spor Mountain , Juab County , Utah . Samples from the two areas have been mineralogically examined to ascertain whether they have similar characteristics . The Honeycomb Hills samples showed the presence of beta- Be ( OH ) 2 , as well as an amorphous berylliferous substance , whereas in the Spor Mountain tuff the beryllium- bearing minerals are hydrated bertrandite and berylliferous saponite .

During the past year and a half the Western United Corporation of Aurora , Illinois , has been distributing carburetted water ges from its Lockport , Ill . , plant , to an extensive territory , under an initial pressure ranging up to 90 lb.. per sq. in . The most distant distributing point on the system is at Harvard , Ill . , about 35 miles from the plant.. The territory supplied is approximately 85 miles long and 35 miles wide , the total mileage of rains being 1223 , or approximately 24 per cent of all the gas trains in Illinois outside the city of Chicago .

"Effects of Bisbenzylisoquinoline Alkaloids on Alveolar Macrophages: Correlation between Binding Affinity. Inhibitory Potency and Antifibrotic Potential. CASTRANOVA, V., KANG, J-H., MA. J. K. The Chinese have conducted extensive studies concerning the medicinal properties of plant products. In this investigation the ability of three bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids to inhibit particle-induced activation of alveolar macrophages was evaluated and this inhibitory potential was correlated with the ability of those drugs to bind to membrane components. Tetrandrine. i.e.. an herbal medicine used as an antifibrotic agent in China, was a potent inhibitor of particle-stimulated oxygen consumption, superoxide release, and hydrogen peroxide secretion by alveolar macrophages. Tetrandrine also exhibited substantial binding affinity for membrane lipids and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, tubocurine, an analogue with little antifibrotic potential, exhibited low binding affinity and had little effect on macrophage activation. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrotic potential, exhibited inhibitory and binding properties similar to those of tetrandrine. The data indicate that a strong relationship exists between the antifibrotic potential of these alkaloids and their ability to bind to alveolar macrophages and inhibit particle-induced activation of these phagocytes. These drugs should serve as useful probes to evaluate the role of alveolar macrophages in pulmonary fibrosis. © 1991 Academic Press, Inc.Chronic silicosis is a fibrotic disease resulting from occupational exposure to silica dust. It is manifested initially by an increase in the quantity of pulmonary surfactant (Dethloff et al., 1986). However, in later stages it is characterized by an increase in collagen formation and the development of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lung (Ziskind et al., 1976). Although mechanisms for the progression of silicosis have not yet been completely defined, activation of alveolar macrophages by respirable silica particles is believed to play an important role in the etiology of this disease. Studies from our laboratory have shown that both in vitro and in vivo silica exposures result in a stimulation of macrophage release of reactive products capable of damaging the lung parenchyma (Castranova et al., 1990; Goodman et al., 1990). In addition, exposure of al¬veolar macrophages to silica results in the release of fibrogenic factors which enhance the proliferation of fibroblasts and the synthesis of collagen by these pneumocytes (Leibovich and Ross, 1976; Bitterman et al., 1982, 1983).The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids, which represent the largest group among the iso-quinoline compounds isolated from the plant kingdom, are known to exhibit a broad rangeof pharmacological activities. Tetrandrine, for example, an alkaloid isolated from the root of Stephania tetrandra, has been tested for its antitumor, antihypertensive, and antisilicotic effects (Kupchan and Atland, 1973; Zeng et al., 1985; Yu et al., 1983). It is currently used in China as a treatment for angina, hypertension, and silica-induced pulmonary fibrosis (Li et al., 1981). Several related bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids such as methoxyadiantifoline and tubocurine have also been evaluated for medicinal effects. Methoxyadiantifoline has been shown to exhibit effects on the cardiovascular system similar to those reported for tetrandrine (Jia et al., 1988). However, to date, the antifibrotic activity of methoxyadiantifoline has not been evaluated. In contrast to tetrandrine, tubocurine, a structural analogue of this drug, has been reported to be relatively ineffective against fibrosis (Mo et al., 1982)."

Methods of preparing small heats of steel containing radioisotopes were developed, and the techniques of stripping film autoradiography were used to detect and study the carbide and sulfide phases in titanium-bearing steels. Metallography had revealed areas of titanium sulfide and ferrite or pearlite adjacent to areas of titanium carbide and ferrite, and unidentified, irregular phases at the boundaries between these two areas. Sulfur 35 was used to deter-mine the extent of the titanium sulfide inclusions, and carbon 14 was used to delineate the titanium carbide phase. Individual radioactive areas were located with a resolution of approximately 10 microns. A general background exposure that was not correlated with microscopically visible phases was observed in the carbon 14 autoradiographs. The evidence from both sulfur 35 autoradiographs and carbon 14 autoradiographs indicated that the unidentified inclusions were sulfides rather than carbides. INTRODUCTION The use of radioisotopes to facilitate the work at the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center was expanded in fiscal year 1959 when the Bureau of Mines authorized the installation of an intermediate-level radioactivity laboratory. Before this time, sealed cobalt 60 sources had been employed for radiography, but no tracer work was done. The primary objective of the first experiments conducted in the new laboratory was to supplement physical metallurgy investigations of selected problems in steel research.

The Bureau of Mines has devised techniques to recover lithium from geothermal brines as the chloride. More than 99 pct of the lithium was precipitated from a brine containing 170 mg/L Li by adding a solution of AICl3 and increasing the pH to 7.5 with lime slurry. The Li-Al precipitate was dissolved in HCl and sparged with gaseous HCI to recover the AlCl3; this resulted in a solution containing LiCl and CaCI2. The solution was evaporated at 1000 C to obtain a mixture of the chlorides from which 97 pct of the lithium was recovered and 90 pct of the calcium was rejected by leaching with tetrahydrofuran. The LiCl recovered by evaporation of the tetrahydrofuran was purified by dissolution in water and treatment with oxalic acid. The final LiCl solution contained 89 pct of the lithium originally present in the brine and had a purity of 99.9 pet.

The extensive use of pulverized coal for fuel in industrial plants has brought to the front again a question that heretofore has been considered only a mining problem, namely, " Can coal dust be ignited by an electric arc ? " If it can be so imited, the next logical query is , "under what conditions can such ignition occur ? " In view of the new problems relating to pulverized coal installations , and because of occasional mine disasters attributed to ignition of coal dust by electric arcs , it seems advisable to review the work done by Thornton and Bowden with electric flashes in coal dust , and to report two preliminary investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines .

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research on dust explosions by studying post-explosion dust samples. The samples were collected after full-scale explosions at the PRL Lake Lynn Experimental Mine and after laboratory explosions in the PRL 20-L chamber and the Fike 1-m3 chamber. The dusts studied included both high and low volatile bituminous coals. Low temperature ashing for 24 hr at 515°C was used to measure the incombustible content of the dust before and after the explosions. The data showed that the post-explosion incombustible content was always as high as or higher than the initial incombustible content. The MSHA alcohol coking test-was used to determine the amount of coked dust in the post-explosion samples. The results showed that almost all coal dust that was suspended within the explosion flame produced significant amounts of coke. Measurements of floor dust concentrations after LLEM explosions were compared to the initial dust loadings to determine the transport distance of dust during an explosion. All of these data will be useful in future forensic investigations of accidental dust explosions in coal mines or elsewhere. This paper reports experimental determinations by the Bureau of Mines of compressibility factors to 4,000 pounds per square inch absolute (p.s.i.a.) for helium at temperatures from -10° to 130° F. and for 16 helium-nitrogen mixtures at 70° F. This information is needed for computing accurate discharge volumes and is necessary for determining an average-density value for use in orifice-meter formulas. In thermodynamic calculations, several functions of the compressibility factor with pressure and temperature are required. The data in the original publications (6, 8)5 of this study have been reexamined and have been given a more comprehensive treatment. The recalculated compressibility factors are higher by approximately 0.2 percent because in the earlier work a linear relationship between the compressibility factor of helium and pressure was assumed.

"In a study of the chemistry and pathology of chronic benzene poisoning, which was conducted cooperatively by the United. States Bureau of Mines, the Barrett Co., and the producers of benzene, it was necessary to make quantitative determinatious of the abzorption, distribution, and: fate of benzene in the organism. Although methods for determining benzene in relatively large amounts were available no satisfactory method was found for removing and determining the small amounts that are present in the tissues or excretions after exposure to conditions which ultimately cause chronic poisoning. This no doubt accounts for the lack of information in the literature on this particular phase of benzene poisoning.The writers have found in work that will be described in a subsequent publication that the amounts of benzene present in the tissues and excretions under conditions of exposure which produce chronic benzene poisoning arc of the order of a fraction to a few milligrams per 100 grams of tissue. This report describes a method developed and found satisfactory for these determina¬tions.RÉSUMÉ OF PERVIOUS METHODSA method for the determination of benzene in tissue was developed by Joachimoglu. 5 In the Joachimoglu procedure the ground organs are mixed with water and acidified with diluted sulphuzic acid, and the benzene is distilled into a receiver containing carbon tetrachloride. The benzene is nitrated in the carbon tetrachloride, the carbon tetrachloride evaporated, the acid mix¬ture neutralized, and the dinitrobenzene extracted with ether. After removal of the ether the dinitrobeuzene is determined gravimetrically. Joachimoglu reports that this method is about 55 to 60 percent quantitative."
