Clay slurries are normally dewatered using flocculents like sulfuric acid or aluminum sulfate. This type of flocculation is based on the electrolytic mechanism. For certain clay dewatering applications, this method of flocculation is unsatisfactory. Flocculation, based on the bridging mechanism, using organic polymers has been utilized to overcome such problem situations. This method of flocculation offers solutions not possible by previous methods. Normally these flocculents are used to assist dewatering. In this case, not only is dewatering promoted, but also further processing is assisted by a change in the dilatant character of the filter cake that is formed. Discharge of filter cake is easier, extrusion of filter cake on to conveyor dryer is possible or improved, and heat transfer and drying rates of the extruded filter cake are substantially higher. Both natural and synthetic organic polymers have been utilized for this purpose. Selection, application techniques, and economics are described.

A Setaram C-80 heat flux micro- calorimeter was used to study the surface and interfacial properties of fine coal particles in water containing flotation agents via heat of immersion measurements. Heat of immersion (?Himm) is usually a small exothermic quantity and can be used' to characterize a solid in terms of its relative hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity. The effects of coal type, surface oxidation, mineral matter content, kerosene concentration, and pH on the wetting characteristics were investigated. Results obtained from the calorimetry experiments correlated well with results from independent flotation experiments.

As part of a survey on the long range supply of gallium, a comprehensive review of the chemistry of commercial gallium extraction was undertaken Owing to its very small concentration in all commercial minerals, gallium can be produced economically only as a by-product of major extraction processes for other materials. Pinson Mining Co. operates a conventional mill and two heap leach operations in north-central Nevada. The latest of these heap leach operations, the Preble project, is a low-grade, low-tonnage property made profitable through several innovative capital reduction techniques. Rapid return on investment was a prime factor in design. To facilitate this, fast-track design and construction techniques were employed. The project is a seasonal 1.5 kt/d (1 700 stpd) crush/agglomerate heap leach plant using both clay and plastic leach pads. Construction and startup were achieved through cooperative arrangements between local contractors and in-house construction personnel, with few items put out to bid. An interactive approach to design minimized lost time and construction costs.

Heathrow Airport is owned and operated by BAA who are engaged in a major programme of expansion. In order to link the expansion of the airport in the west with the existing central terminal area, a twin bore, 8.8m outside diameter, road tunnel,1280m long, is being constructed. The tunnel drives pass over, with limited clearances, an operating railway tunnel, and pass under, with about one diameter cover, the airport taxiways and aircraft stands. Selection of the machine was heavily influenced by the need to minimise settlement.

I was asked here today to discuss the first long-term freight rate contract ever signed by a U.S. railroad and shipper. That was ICG's contract with the hoosier energy company to haul coal from southern Illinois to an Indiana power plant. I?ll also talk about why you can expect to see more such contracts in the future But first, let me tell you a little bit about the Illinois central gulf railroad and why coal contracts are so important to us. ICG is a principal mid-American freight carrier. We are one of the ten largest railroads in the united states and one of the ten largest coal-hauling railroads. ICG links the industrial great lakes region with the warm weather ports of the gulf coast. Some of the major points on our route map are Chicago; Indianapolis; Omaha; Kansas City; Memphis; St. Louis; and, of course, baton rouge and new Orleans.

Abstract. Controlled flow is an aspect often desired in mine ventilation. This is normally obtained by using fans and regulators to achieve the required pressure balance in the system. Preference for a certain network layout of these control devices is influenced by technical as well as legal and economic factors. In this study, a model is developed based on an economic criterion by which an optimum layout of fans and regulators for a controlled flow system can be determined. The concept is analo¬gous to the critical path crashing. However, a linear programming package is used to demonstrate the solution procedure for a hypothetical venti¬lation network.

Diatomite or diatomaceous earth is composed of innumerable microscopic opaline skeletons of single-celled aquatic plants called diatoms. The unique properties of this material enable it to be used as an important filtration medium and filler. The Circumpacific contains several economic deposits of diatomite. The largest of these is located in Lompoc, Ca. This deposit is the world's largest, purest, and most uniform marine deposit currently being mined. The other Circumpacific deposits are of fresh water origin. These deposits and Lompoc's unique marine deposit are significant sources of the world's diatomite supply.

The present work investigates whether dielectric spectroscopy can be used to detect contamination, which may appear in a natural porous material, due to the spreading of pollution. For this purpose, dielectric and conductivity measurements, in the frequency range of 10mHz to 1MHz, were carried out in sandstone samples, partially filled or saturated with solutions of leachates, at different concentrations. The experimental results suggest that although the role of water is dominant to the measured electrical conductivity, variations of two orders of magnitude are observed due to the different concentrations of leachates, in partially filled sandstone samples. Experimental data are well fitted with a Havriliak?Negami dielectric relaxation function, superimposed with a conductivity term. The parameters of the fitting function have been correlated to the concentration of leachate in the sandstone samples and considerable changes have been observed at low leachate?s concentration.

California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land-use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 20,000 square miles and contain 50 billion tons of high-quality aggregate resources which have been legally designated as ?regionally significant?, providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and State testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine-permitting decisions.

Cobalt, nickel and manganese can be recovered quickly, cleanly and selectively from cobalt-rich manganese ocean crust by leaching in dilute acid solutions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Common selective precipitation methods can then be used to recover these metals from the leach liquor. The leaching reaction produces only oxygen as a byproduct, and the waste residue from leaching was tested and found to be nonhazardous under existing EPA specifications. The leaching process is effective in either fresh water or seawater. This research is a part of the Bureau of Mines program to identify the mineral resources of the Exclusive Economic Zone and devise methods, for recovering their valuable components.

This is a final progress report on a cooperative project conducted by three private feldspar companies,** North Carolina State University, and the federal Bureau of Mines. The object of the project was to reduce the feldspar tailings disposal problems at the flotation plants in the Spruce Pine area of North Carolina. The initial phase of the project revealed that high tonnages of saleable feldspar and quartz were lost in the tailings and the three feldspar companies are now concentrating their efforts on feldspar recovery, either by reclamation from the tailings as suggested by the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory or by improvements in metallurgy in the existing plants.

Rock characterization for geotechnical purposes using the microhardness technique is discussed in this paper. The concept of rock characterization and its steps are logically developed. The geotechnical properties should be functionally tethered to the technological problems for characterization. The overriding geotechnical concern is rock mass stability. The important factors in this respect are rock properties, structural discontinuities, ground water, field stress, temperature and technological factors. The rock properties are the primary factors and the other factors generally affect rock properties. Of the rock properties the strength and elastic properties can form a basis for rock characterization. The microhardness technique can provide these two properties. Study on coal shows that the microhardness impressions can be used for this purpose. On the basis of this study coals of all ranks can be divided into distinct geotechnical groups. The details of these are discussed in this paper.

Application of shallow, seismic reflection to problems associated with mineral exploration, mine planning, abandoned-mine detection and environmental evaluation has been successful in many geologic settings. The increased dynamic range of recording equipment and the decreased cost of processing hardware and software have made shallow, seismic reflection a cost-effective means of imaging geologic targets significant to mining operations. Seismic data possess sufficient resolution in many areas to detect faulting with displacement of less than 3 m (10 ft) in coal seams as thin as 2 m (6.5 ft) at depths of 200 m (655 ft). Subsurface voids associated with abandoned mines at depths of less than 20 m (65 ft) can he detected and mapped. Seismic reflection has been successful mapping disturbed subsurface associated with dissolution mining of salt. Complex geologic features associated with deposition of various hydrothermal minerals have been mapped with high-resolution seismic reflection at depths from 80 m (260 ft) to more than 300 m (985 ft). Faults in sulfur-hearing cap rock over salt domes have been accurately located, allowing improved efficiency of the dissolution mining process. Shallow, high-resolution seismic reflection has the potential to enhance the economics and safety of mine operations.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an experimental method to evaluate the relative effectiveness of water additives on the extinguishment of coal fires. The experiments were conducted in the fire zone of the multiple entry section of the Bruceton Experimental Mine. Chambers filled with one hundred and eighty kilograms of Pittsburgh seam coal were ignited and allowed to burn until well developed fires were achieved. Extinguishing agent-water solutions were then applied to the fires and the quantity required to extinguish the fires compared to the amount of water alone required to extinguish similar fires. A 20% diammonium phosphate-water solution required an average of 22 L to extinguish the coal fires, while two commercially available additive-water solutions required an average of 30.6 and 30.3 L, respectively. The average amount of water required to extinguish the fires was 28 L. An analysis of covariance, using the thermal energy of the coalbed, Q, to quantify the fire at the time of extinguishment, showed that the diammonium phosphate-water solution was slightly more effective at extinguishing these coal fires than water alone, while the two commercially available additive-water solutions were statistically equivalent to water alone.

Lignin sulphonic acid (or its salt) is commercially used as a surfactant in the Zinc Pressure Leach process. The surfactant prevents liquid sulphur from coating unreacted zinc minerals thus allowing the leaching reaction to proceed. Infrared studies have been performed using the Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier trans- form infrared technique (ATR-FTIR); the application of this technique permitted the "in-situ" study of the adsorption of the surfactant by sphalerite. The spectral records obtained from study indicate that the lignin sulphonate ions are both physically and chemically adsorbed by the sphalerite.

5.1 INTRODUCTION There are several types of surface ground disturbances, each of which is immediately transmitted to surface structures and causes damage of various forms, depending on the location of the structures in the subsidence basin. Many criteria have also been proposed for defining the potential structural damage. All of these topics will be discussed in this chapter. 5.2 TYPES OF GROUND DAMAGES There are two types of ground damage, continuous and dis¬continuous, that could inflict damages to surface structures. Dis¬continuous ground damage is open fractures of various degrees. Four types of fractures are commonly seen (Brauner, 1973b): 1. Fissures or cracks. Cracks are the most common form of ground damage and range from completely closed to several feet wide. Surface cracks are most prominent when the ratio of mining depth to mining height is smaller than 30 to 50 times mining height. Cracks initiate parallel to, but ahead of the moving long¬wall face at some intervals when the depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 25 to 30. As the face continues to move, they open up and then close gradually, and in most cases eventually close up completely when the face moves farther away. Sometimes when the depth-to-mining height ratio is larger, cracks may initiate be¬hind the face and go through the same cycle. Cracks are also more likely to occur in the hill when the face is moving in the uphill direction. Cracks also occur at or near both sides of the panel edges. Those cracks tend to remain open permanently. When the surface is covered with grass or other vegetation, cracks of less than 1 to 2 in. wide usually do not penetrate it and become invisible on the surface. 2. Steps. A step may occur when the longwall face stops abruptly if the mining depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 20. Steps may also occur along the panel edges. Steps also range from a few inches to a few feet in width and depth. If planes of weakness are oriented favorably, ground will slide along these planes and form steps on the surface. 3. Cave-in pits. These result from local collapse of the ground from the mine level to the surface when the mining depth is less than 150 ft and occur mostly above abandoned mined lands. They may be as large as 40 ft wide and deep. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps result from ground compression and occur mostly near panel center some time after mining. Bumps of up to 4 ft, but mostly 1 to 2 ft, have been identified. Continuous ground damage refers to the formation of the sub¬sidence basin where continuous nondestructive ground deforma¬tions occur. As mentioned earlier, continuous ground deforma¬tions associated with a subsidence basin include subsidence, slope, curvature, displacement, horizontal strain, twisting, and shearing. 5.3 TYPES OF SURFACE STRUCTURAL DAMAGES Both continuous and discontinuous ground disturbance cause damage to surface structures. A. Structural Damages Due to Discontinuous Ground Disturbance 1. Fissures or cracks. Open cracks can cause dislocation of surface structure if the gaps are sufficiently large so that the struc¬tural elements cannot resist but fail. On the other hand, minor cracks affect only the appearance, and not the structural integrity. 2. Steps. When a surface structure is located on a step, some portions of the structure lose support and become overhung. In the case of a residential house, there will likely be many open frac¬tures in the overhung portions, followed in severe cases by sepa¬ration of the superstructure at the edge of the step. 3. Cave-in pits. If the caved-in pit is larger than the surface structure, the structure will drop into the pit and become unstable. If the caved-in pit is smaller than the surface structure, the struc¬ture may either become overhung or lose support in some portions. In either case, it is unsafe for use. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps will disrupt roadways or house floor. If located under supporting members of the struc¬tures, it may cause damages. B. Structural Damage Due to Continuous Ground Disturbances 1. Subsidence. Pure subsidence or uniform subsidence over an area does not cause any structural damage. However, if it becomes a topographical low area, it may be flooded with water and make the surface structures unusable. It must be noted that the flat bottom area at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin does not reach that position suddenly. Rather, as shown in Fig. 3.1, it is subjected to the dynamic surface deformation asso¬ciated with the traveling subsidence basin before it is left behind to be part of the flat-bottom area. Therefore any structure located at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin must be able to resist the dynamic surface deformation in order not to be dam¬aged. 2. Slope. Ground slope will induce tilting of the structure. Tall structures with small base areas, such as water towers, chimneys, and power transmission towers are most sensitive to ground slope. If the ground slope is such that if after tilting the center of the gravity of the tilted structure falls outside the base area, it will topple, but this seldom occurs. Ground slope will change the designed slope of a buried trans¬portation pipeline, either increasing or decreasing the original slope depending on whether the ground slope coincides with or opposes the original slope. There are maximum allowable final slopes for various types of transporting materials. Ground slope also affects highways and railways. There is a maximum allowable final slope for a railway because tractive effort increases 1/1000 of its weight for every increase of 1/1000 in grade. 3. Curvature. There are positive (convex) and negative (con¬cave) curvatures. When a surface structure is located on a positive curvature, both ends become unsupported, followed by bending upward at the midportion. The top portion is subjected to more severe stretching than the lower one. In this presentation, CiDRA?s patented technology platform and its applications will be described. CiDRA's non-invasive, passive sonar array-based flow meter technology provides the volumetric flow rate of single or multiphase fluids by measuring the speed at which naturally occurring structures such as turbulent eddies or density variations convect with the flow past an axial array of sensors. These sensors are incorporated in a band that is wrapped around the outside of the pipe, resulting in no process downtimes for installation and unprecedented reliability. This technology has resulted in a unique ability to measure the flow rate of most fluids ? clean liquids, high solids content slurries, pastes, and liquids and slurries with entrained air. Unique and difficult minerals processing flow measurement problems and their solutions will be described. Examples of these problems include flow measurements in froth lines and flotation feed lines with entrained air, slurry lines with magnetite and other magnetic ore, slurry lines with abrasive or corrosive materials, high pressure lines, and lines exhibiting scale buildup. Recent technology developments will be covered.

The Ohio River Tunnel Project encountered multiple unexpected geotechnical challenges which, continuing to develop over time, hampered excavation completion and impacted the cast-in-place final lining technique and work execution sequence for the entire project. The continued degradation of the excavated hard rock tunnel conditions led to a unique, dynamic, geologic setting that forced the project to innovate new and adaptable measures allowing for a conventional cast-in-place liner to be completed in a safe and timely manner and minimize delay.

The Stillwater Mining Co. is a partnership of The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corp. The Stillwater Mine, located near Nye, MT, is the Western Hemisphere’s only primary platinum-palladium deposit. The mine began production of flotation concentrates in March 1987. In the fall of 1987, an integrated pilot plant testing campaign of electric furnace smelting and oxygen-blown converting confirmed the feasibility of further upgrading to semi-refined matte, or “white metal.” In the summer of 1990, the production smelter was brought on line. The record of the discovery and development of the Stillwater deposit, mine and concentrator has been summarized in several articles (White, 1987; Kennedy, 1987; and Hodges and Clifford, 1988). Similarly, the pilot campaign to test the feasibility of treating the flotation concentrates in an integrated smelting plant has been described (Hodges and Clifford, 1988; Matousek, et al., 1989; and Matousek and Whellock, 1990).
