A lead-zinc flotation tailings sample containing silver from BHP Billiton’s Cannington Mine has been characterised to understand occurrences of silver in the tailings by conventional elemental, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and size analyses followed by mineralogical analysis with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with mineral liberation analysis (MLA) software and the use of an adapted diagnostic leach process originally developed for gold containing materials.The tailings sample contained 67 g/t Ag, 1.8 per cent Pb and 0.52 per cent Zn. The XRD analysis showed that the sample consisted of 74 per cent silicates, nine per cent sulfides, 11 per cent magnetite and small amounts of other minerals such as fluorite, fluorapatite and rutile. The p80 and p50 of the sample were determined to be 106 µm and 38 µm, respectively. The silver distribution was high in the small size fraction with 52.1 per cent of the silver being in the -8 µm fraction. The silver minerals freibergite, acanthite, jamesonite, pyrargyrite and native silver were observed in the mineralogical analysis of the sample by SEM/MLA. The associations of the minerals were intricate and the occurrences of silver were complex. There were finely disseminated silver minerals and also coarser grains of silver minerals in composites with the host minerals. It was estimated that almost 50 per cent of the silver was contained in pyrargyrite, around 14 per cent as native silver and contained in acanthite, 12.5 per cent in galena and around ten per cent in freibergite and jamesonite.These composite particles and the type of the silver minerals present were expected to limit leaching efficiencies of the silver in hydrometallurgical processing. The diagnostic leach tests showed that around 50 per cent of the silver could be recovered by direct cyanidation and higher extractions could be achieved by more aggressive acidic systems.Cyanidation tests were conducted to confirm the findings of the diagnostic leach studies. The investigated cyanidation parameters were time (up to 48 hours), solid to liquid ratio (1:1 and 1:2), cyanide concentration (0.025 M, 0.5 M and 0.1 M) and particle size (p80 of 106 µm, 63 µm and 7.5 µm). The effects of oxygen and lead nitrate were also studied. The tests were conducted at atmospheric temperatures. The maximum silver recovery obtained was about 50 per cent for all the parameter ranges trialled except particle size. The decrease in particle size from 106 µm to 7.5 µm by fine grinding resulted in an increase in silver recoveries from 50 per cent up to approximately 82 per cent indicating that the liberation of the silver grains/minerals is one of the factors affecting the cyanidation recovery of silver in addition to the presence of refractory silver minerals not amenable to cyanidation.Low head grades of silver in the tailings and relatively low cyanidation recoveries of silver (without fine grinding) necessitate a thorough cost analysis for the cyanidation of the Cannington lead and zinc tailings to assess if cyanidation would be a suitable process option for the extraction of silver. The Grande Côte Mineral Sands Deposit (GCMSP) is located on a coastal mobile dune system in Senegal on the west coast of Africa. Senegal is a stable, democratic republic, having gained its independence from France in 1960. It has a population of about 12.5 million people. The dunes begin about 25 km north-east of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, and extend northwards for more than 140 km. The mineralised dune system averages about 2 km wide with some areas extending to up to 4.5 km wide.Mineral Deposits limited (MDL), a Melbourne-based company with over 60 years operational experience in mineral sand mining in Australia, holds, through its Senegalese subsidiary MDL Senegal SARL (MDLS), a 25-year Mining Concession covering the deposits. The main heavy mineral (HM) areas identified to date are, from south to north, Mboro, Fass Boye, Diogo and Lompoul. Within the Mining Concession there is potential to identify additional resources beyond the limits of present drilling. The dunes are mobile or semi fixed, pale yellow in colour and overlie older white marine sands. The dunes range between 5 m and 30 m in height and the mineralised zones, which are essentially flat-lying, average around 15 m in thickness. The mineralisation consists, principally of ilmenite with accessory zircon, rutile and leucoxene. Zircon and ilmenite are the main commodities of interest.Independent consultants AMC estimated mineral resources for the four main deposits in 2006 of 1330 Mt of sand averaging 2.0 per cent HM at a cut-off grade of 1.5 per cent HM. At a cut-off grade of one per cent the resources were 3200 Mt averaging 1.5 per cent HM. All of the estimate was classified as Inferred Resources under the 2004 Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC, 2004).Subsequent completion of infill drilling, sampling and assaying of the initial mining area, centred at Diogo, was completed in 2008, enabling a final dredge path to be designed and ore reserves estimated, based on a JORC compliant Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource. Infill drilling is continuing in the Lompoul and the results of this campaign will be included in the JORC compliant data base by AMC in April 2010 to enable the 15 per cent year dredge path and mine plan to be finalised.Development studies have shown that the project can be optimised as a dredging operation, with mineralised sand being treated in a conventional floating spiral preconcentrator, wet concentrator and dry mineral separation plant. Engineering work now substantially completed by Ausenco Limited (Ausenco) has developed the combination of some existing plant from MDL’s past operations, and new plant for the complete process from dredging to final product separation and grading. Testwork on a series of bulk samples has determined that the project can yield a high quality zircon product and an ilmenite product along with minor rutile and leucoxene.Work to date indicates a likely output of around 80 000 t of zircon in various quality streams (Primary, Secondary, Standard and Foundry Grades), around 550 000 t of ilmenite plus around 15000 t of rutile and around 12 000 t of leucoxene/secondary ilmenite. Planned zircon output would represent around 7per cent of the total world production, which would make the GCZ&IP a significant producer on a world scale.The studies have indicated capital costs to be in the range of US$400 M total operating cost (after completion of ramp-up) of around US$50 M - $55 M/a. Revenue is expected to be in the range $127 M - $157 M/a.

Given the ongoing global crises of climate change and nature loss, with the World Economic Forum (WEF) identifying them as the top risks to global economies in terms of both likelihood and impact in the coming ten years (WEF, 2022), there is increasing, pressing demand for companies to demonstrate they understand their climate and nature related risks and look toward contributing genuine beneficial environmental outcomes. Within the mining industry, mine closure is the obvious field in which climate and nature positive strategy can be linked with operations. To do so, there is a need to challenge long-held assumptions around closure in the mining and regulatory context; particularly, to shift the focus from closing individual mines to considering regional opportunity generation and value creation.

The Porphyry Gold Mine (150km NE of Kalgoorlie) was reopened in November 1983 with production commencing in April 1984. Original reserves quoted for the open pit were 822000 tonnes at 5.2 g/t Au based on wide spaced diamond drill holes. Close spaced grade control drilling has revealed some loss of tonnage and a significantly lower grade. In the area of the pit mined to 30 June 1985 this grade control reserve estimate contained 67% of the gold in the original ore reserve with the grade being 19% lower. It is anticipated that the final grade control reserve estimate will contain around 80-85% of the gold contained in the original reserve. There has been close agreement between the Mill Head grade (4.19 g/t Au) and the grade control predicted grade (4.2 g/t Au) confirming that dilution is not a major problem. After initial poor agreement (attributed to "lock-up" in the circuit) the bullion calculated head grade steadied out at 93% of the grade control prediction. This difference is considered to represent the geostatistical bias in the drill hole/crushed rock sampling. Gold recovery has been in the range 93-95% (compared with bullion calculated grade). The net result is that the recovered grade of ore mined to 30 June 1985 is 70% of the original ore reserve grade.

The possibility of removing the phos phorus and sulphur contained in steelmaking slag has been studied by observing directly through the microscope melts heated on Pt- filaments. After a CaO crystal was placed in the molten slag, distributions of P, S and other elements formed around the CaO crystal were determined with the aid of EPMA. The results indicated that a layer of 2CaO SiO2 is formed on solid CaO in CaO-Si02 melts. Then between CaO and the newly formed compound the molten slag tends to migrate through cracks. For higher Fe 2 03 contents, the layers of the compounds 2CaO.Si02 and 3CaO SiO2 formed around the CaO crystal are not continuous but look more like particles, which promotes the dissolution of CaO. Phosphorus in slag was found to be enriched in the 2CaOòSi02 layer. Phosphorus in the 2CaO SiO2 phase is not related to the primary slag composition, being about 5-7% P205.. Sulphur in slag,as well as the phos- phorus,was concentrated in the 2CaO.Si02 phase. Disintegration due to weathering observed for slags produced in these investigations appeared to be due principally to hydration of lime.

When an iron orebody nears its end of life, the extracted material can become increasingly problematic to handle. Higher moisture content occurs as larger portions of originally-below-water-table material is mined, which in some deposits is accompanied by further changes in physical and/or chemical properties present along the edges of the orebody. Plant delays related to problematic material have affected all of BHP’s mining hubs to various degrees. Following the recent successful work in Yandi, where the development of an index to quantify the handleability of channel iron ore deposits resulted in an increase in extracted volumes and an extension to the expected life-of-mine, the value of implementing similar indices for bedrock iron ore deposits has been recognised. A materials handling index has been developed by combining observed empirical relationships between material properties and processing plant performance. Indices for each deposit were further refined and optimised by implementing a back-testing strategy which facilitated an understanding of what weighting or scaling each of the contributing components should carry to yield the highest success rate of predicting actual delays at a given plant. Currently materials handling indices are deployed to all mine sites and are made available in block models as well as calculated for individual blasthole and production samples. Values in block models are obtained by predicting the required properties using machine learning models, whereas hyperspectral data is used to ‘measure’ some of those properties on a sample level. This paper discusses the work that has been undertaken to obtain materials handling indices, the testing that has been done to optimise them, and what processes have been developed to ensure the best metrics are being used in the different planning and scheduling horizons to optimise extraction.

The Geita Gold Mine is located 80 km southwest of the town of Mwanza in the north-west of Tanzania and is 100 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Limited. Open pit mining commenced at Geita in 2000. In 2011, the operation produced 494 000 oz at a cash cost of US$536/oz. This is a significant improvement from 2008, when 264 000 oz were produced at a cash cost of US$742/oz.A period of relatively poor operating performance at Geita was recorded over the period from 2006 to 2009. A period known at Geita as æthe turnaroundÆ commenced in 2009, and has been remarkable to say the least. Over the last couple of years the mine has embarked on a journey, which saw various interventions and initiatives. Among the key initiatives were Project ONE (which focuses on business process framework, systems for people and safety transformation), asset integrity, fatigue management and contract mining of satellite pits.Since the commencement of the turnaround at Geita, gold production has matched market guidance. The mine has returned to positive cash flow on the basis of strong performance on cash management, improved production and increased gold price.This paper explains some of the details of the mine operationsÆ improvements, how they were implemented, their relative contributions to improved mining performance and the path ahead to best practice. The mining industry seeks to engage with and respond to stakeholders through open consultation processes during the various phases of a mining project (Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, 2006). Two Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded projects conducted in the Bowen Basin coalfields in Central Queensland investigated the use of a stakeholder panel for the evaluation of mine site rehabilitation. The panel members were drawn from the local and regional area, and represented neighbouring landholders, traditional owners, AgForce, local government, conservation groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Greening Australia and the Fitzroy Basin Association. The approach of utilising stakeholders to establish rehabilitation criteria was proposed as an alternative to the established practice of assessing rehabilitated areas against a suite of quantitative completion criteria; eg >70 per cent vegetative ground cover or <5 t/ha/a soil loss. The basis of this approach recognises the reality that the definition of completion criteria has proved problematic over the last 40 years with no broad consensus reached on the suite, let alone the metrics; eg the exact cover level that will benchmark acceptance of the mine site rehabilitation.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2016. "This paper reflects on the author’s experiences in undertaking mining studies and reviewing mining projects and technical reports, particularly over the past five years, and the impact of recent changes in reporting standards and listing requirements pertaining to mining-related evaluation and valuation exercises. It also discusses contemporary changes in the expectations of the investment community and the implications for the role of the technical specialist in providing advice to such stakeholders.Not for the first time in history, the resources industry has experienced a significant downturn after a period of strong, sustained growth in line with the traditional view of the cyclical nature of commodity markets. The resource industry is currently faced with capital austerity in the wake of projects ‘failing’ (not delivering to expectations). In response, the industry has experienced changes in investment behaviour (slowing of investment) and an increasing regulatory burden as stakeholders seek a greater understanding of mining project risks.This paper discusses this response and uses case studies to highlight the key learnings (perhaps re-learnt) by the industry. It also discusses the challenges faced by technical specialists in communicating the results of technical and valuation studies to the investment community.As investors seek to take advantage of the current stage in the investment cycle, the key challenge of the technical specialist is to effectively communicate the uncertainty in technical assumptions, risks and opportunities that drive project value.CITATION:Fairfield, P J, 2016. Transportation of iron ore from the mine to the plant is critical to business success. Ore from the mine may have to be transported across states, countries and even continents to get to the processing plant or export facilities, and ultimately to the client. Numerous transportation steps may result in potential logistical difficulties. Companies are continually seeking ways to increase production rates, decrease delivery times and reduce operating costs. Transportation cost is a major component of the total cost of mining iron ore and therefore requires effective use of transport systems.Bottlenecks in iron ore transport systems, due to material handling issues, can result in loss in profit in the order of millions of dollars per hour. Bottlenecks can be seen anywhere in the transport system where the desired flow rate cannot be achieved. These bottlenecks occur for various reasons such as increasing throughput in a transport system originally designed for a lower throughput resulting in plugged transfer chutes, changing material characteristics (eg finer material, increased moisture content), changing to a new type of material or blend that again alters handleability, or changes in operational philosophy due to equipment availability or process utilisation.Stockpiles may have limited live capacity such that an adequate amount of ore may not be readily reclaimed when required (eg to fill a complete train’s railcars). In bins and hoppers, material may discharge through a central flow channel resulting in the formation of a stable rathole, which can then collapse causing material to flood the downstream system and cause significant downtime for clean-up (eg railcars beneath train load outs). In transfer chutes, bottlenecks can be caused by pluggages or downtime required for the change-out of liners due to excessive wear. In ship loading, long settling or de-aeration time, or material exceeding its transportable moisture limit (TML) may result in further bottlenecks. These bottlenecks all have associated costs because of the need to address their causes and because of the lost opportunities for throughput.This paper will discuss how bulk material technology and proper understanding of material flow characteristics can be applied to mitigate bottlenecks. In the 1890s, The Goldfields Water Supply Department in Western Australia commissioned the diamond drilling of two deep artesian exploratory water bores near Coolgardie (Blatchford, 1899). At the time, in spite of strongly-worded advice to the contrary from the Government geologists, there was a wide popular belief that you could obtain artesian groundwater virtually anywhere providing you drilled deep enough. The first Coolgardie hole was drilled to over 900 m, despite the fact that the bore penetrated granite from a depth of 5 m below the surface. Drilling proceeded for more than 16 months, between July 1896 and November 1897. A small quantity of salt water was struck at a depth of 36 m. The second bore was mercifully terminated at a depth of 50 m, also in granite, with again only a small inflow of salt water. Such were the desperate lengths that were pursued to obtain a reliable water supply for the influx of people in the Eastern Goldfields gold rush. The WA Goldfields continued to rely on huge condensers for water supply until that great engineering feat, the construction of a water pipeline from Mundaring Weir to Coolgardie, was completed in 1903. An enormous network of rail tracks penetrated outwards from Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie for the collection of timber, principally to feed the condensers. Remnants of the rail network are still visible today. The acute shortage of fresh water led to great deprivation, disease and death among the early miners. Today, the water problems faced by the mining industry are thankfully not as severe, but they are nevertheless no less challenging. The southern part of the WA Goldfields is a notoriously difficult area for finding potable quality groundwater. Even as recently as the 1990s, there were occasional serious efforts to find potable groundwater in that area, some very imaginative and innovative. One mining company, working south of Southern Cross, spent many months experimenting with recovery of potable quality water from a shallow freshwater lens overlying hypersaline water in a low permeability weathered granite aquifer. They used very low capacity pumps manufactured from car windscreen washer pumps powered by solar panels.

The risk and consequences of community rejection and loss of a social licence to operate is well articulated (Moffat et al 2018), however, the means for systematically managing this risk are less established. At the local scale, a mining operation is said to have a social licence to operate (SLO) when it achieves ongoing acceptance or approval from the local community and other stakeholders who can affect its profitability (Graafland, 2002). Without this social acceptance, it is very difficult for a business to operate effectively or profitably. It is well understood that social (or community) acceptance of a mine and its associated operations is a reflection of the quality of the relationship a company has with their host community (Thomson & Boutilier, 2011; Lacey & Lamont, 2014; Parsons et al., 2014; Moffat et al., 2015). Community relations are an integral part of successful mining operations and where these interactions are effective, they tend to foster mutual understanding, trust and support between a company and the host community (Kemp et al., 2006; Holley & Mitcham, 2016). Research further demonstrates that where such interactions are perceived to be procedurally fair, the increased trust created in these company-community interactions tends to lead to higher levels of acceptance of mining operations (Moffat & Zhang, 2014; Lacey et al., 2017).The challenge, however, is how to listen systematically to communities that mining and associated operations; communities that are often located across vast geographic areas and with diverse demographics. To date, traditional methods deployed to both guide and evaluate community engagement and social investment activities have been challenged to reflect the nature of the phenomenon they seek to observe, the voice of community. For example, detailed baseline surveys of community attitudes every three years by companies, as is the requirement within the policy frameworks of most large miners, provide rich insights but do not reflect the dynamic, temporal nature of the relationships that underpins their SLO. These processes typically are largely opaque to communities and distinct from the company’s engagement activities. The CSIRO Local Voices project was developed with Rio Tinto to go some way towards meeting this challenge of how to listen to the voice of community systematically. The sole reason for a mine to exist is to extract the finite mineral resource. Accurate grade control is critical to the economics of any mine. If grade control is not optimised, then no matter how good the downstream processes are, the full potential of the operation will not be realised. The detailed implementation of grade control varies but typically consists of sampling and assaying to determine the location of the ore zones. A lot of time, money and effort are spent defining the location of the ore as accurately as possible à but then it is blown up! The effect that blasting has on grade control is rarely adequately accounted for when the rock is excavated because there has never been an accurate and practical method for measuring blast movement. This paper draws on over six years of research into measuring and understanding blast movement, which started at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) of the University of Queensland. The research has made a unique contribution to open pit blasting by helping to develop a practical tool for measuring blast movement, which was then used to improve the understanding of three-dimensional blast movement dynamics. However, these achievements would be of largely academic interest without taking the final step of using this technology and knowledge to account for blast movement by translating the ore polygons in response to the measured movement vectors. This paper provides an overview of blast movement but focuses on one site where blast movement was measured during three separate periods, with significantly different orientation of the mineralisation on each occasion. The theoretical ore loss varied from nine per cent to 24 per cent. The differences are primarily due to the orientation of the ore polygons relative to the direction of movement. The optimum grade control solution is a combination of accurately accounting for blast movement and designing appropriate blasts.

Detailed cash flow forecasts have always been almost essential as a basis for judging the viability of proposed new mining projects. In recent years attempts have been made explicitly to take account, in such forecasts, of the uncertainties surrounding the assumptions upon which they are based. With the risk analysis approach, Monte Carlo simulation of the cash flows indicates in probability terms the combined effect of these uncertain basic assumptions. While the use of risk analysis has been widely discussed, few specific applications to real projects have been reported. The application of such an analysis in the feasibility study of the large new Deelkraal gold mine presently being established on the Far West Witwatersrand gold fields by the Gold Fields Group in South Africa is described in the paper. The paper also indicates how one of the major sources of uncertainty, namely the gold content of the ore, can be`quantified in objective probability terms. This feature distinguishes the application fran other published accounts in which only subjective probability assessments have been utilised.

The sharp deterioration in Au~tralia'S ternn of trade in recent years and the accumulating national debt highlight the need for a restructuring of the economy which is highly dependent upon primary agricultural and mineral commodity exports (figure 1). Table I gives an indication of the value that can be added to raw material by mineral processing. Significantly higher value is added through downstream manufacturing. In 1987, the mining and rural sectors accounted for 47010 and 38010 respectively of total exports valued at $35,782 million (figure 2). The export contribution from minerals comprised $12,266 mil- lion from unprocessed ores and concentrates and $4,668 million from metals and processed minerals including some simple manufactures. Coal accounted for 450/s of total primary mineral exports. Iron ore and alumina are other important mineral exports, while gold and aluminium are major metal exports. (Figure 3) Australia's minerals are now traded in a much more competi- tive and oversupplied market in contrast to the 1960's and 1970's period which was characterised by increasing exports of largely unprocessed ores and concentrates. During this period the emphasis on technology development was focussed on reducing costs through increased production effi- ciencies in order to maintain competitiveness.

Several case studies are examined in which analysis of treated ores and extracted metal species by Mossbauer spectroscopy provides information not available by other competing techniques. The cases include poorly crystalline, surface iron oxides in titanium minerals and chalcopyrite, gold in ores and bacterially oxidised ores and the adsorbed species from gold extracted from cyanide and chloride solutions onto activated carbon and polyurethane foams. Some limitations on the use of the technique in terms of sample size, sensitivity and counting time are also discussed.

WMC Resources Ltd has been involved the development and trialling of an automated load haul dump vehicle system since 1997. This paper describes the introduction of the system into the Olympic Dam Operation and its performance compared with existing manual loaders. In certain situations the autotram loader will outperform the manual operation, particularly on the longer distances. Peak Gold Mine is a new gold and base metal mining project being developed by Enterprise Metals (a 100 per cent subsidiary of CRA) at Cobar in the centre of New South Wales. The Cobar district has a long history of copper and gold mining operations stretching back to the 1870s. Extensive gold and base metal mineralisation was discovered at the Peak in 1981 below a series of gold mines which had been active around the turn of the century. Evaluation of the deposit through the 1980s led to CRA's decision to develop the project for production at a capacity of 450 000 tonnes per annum in late 1992. The project has been developed with a green fields approach despite the long history of mining in the local area. This approach has lead to several innovative ideas being trialed at the site which are expected to result in the operation being a low cost producer of gold and base metals.

The BHP Billiton Cannington mine uses sequential flotation to treat a silver, lead and zinc ore supplied from an underground mine. The final products from the process plant are a silver rich lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. Operational history of plant performance highlighted that the majority of valuable metal losses to final tailing occurred in the -5 ¦m fraction. Research completed on the flotation characteristics of this size fraction in plant feed resulted in the development of a split flotation process to improve the silver and lead mineral recoveries. Construction of a $A 9.5 million brownfield project to install the new split flotation circuit at Cannington was completed in July 2002. The circuit consists of three stages of cyclone classification to recover the ultra fine material to a final cyclone overflow stream, conditioning of this pulp to achieve optimal process conditions, and conventional rougher and three stage cleaner flotation to produce a silver rich lead concentrate. The rougher tail from the new circuit is recombined with the cyclone underflow streams and processed through the original lead-zinc flotation circuit. This paper discusses the circuit design, material properties, material selection for components of the circuit, operational practices and requirements to ensure the circuit succeeded in meeting production targets. The technology is subject of a number of patent applications including international application No PCT/AU02/00400.
