I believe that more experimental results could have been given, together with more details of the modifications made to the plant that enabled it to operate with the success mentioned in the paper. One important omission is a definition of the word fines. As pointed out elsewhere!, this word is used very loosely.

As the price of gold increased, so did the viability of mining previously abandoned unpay areas of Stilfontein Mine. After an assessment to confirm the profitability of mining these areas, it was necessary to re-establish access-ways such as haulages, cross-cuts, and travelling ways. Openingup is a labour-intensive, relatively slow operation, and attempts were made to mechanizeand speed it up. Some of the techniques applied and the results achieved, whether successful or not, are discussed.

It is difficult to evaluate exploration properties in a manner that is transparent, repeatable and easily re-calculated to cater for different geological interpretations, but the risk-based assessment methodology, the Geological Risk Method, developed and described by Lord et al (2001) attempts to satisfy all these criteria. This paper examines a case study example based on valuations of exploration projects conducted by SRK Consulting using this methodology, and describes some of the advantages and limitations of the method.

The application of kriging in assessing the area rainfall in a weather modification experiment is complicated by the presence of many zero rainfall recordings on a given day, and the fact that the variograms seem to be quite different for the rainfall on different days. Indicator variograms are shown to be directly related to two sets of conditional probabilities. Mining executives often have a difficult task determining what the strategic objective of the business should be as this can be impacted by the prevailing market conditions. In addition, they have no mechanism to quantitatively 'test' the impact of this strategic decision on the business and understand the underlying dynamics. During the commodities bull run of 2003 to 2008 the strategic objective may have been to grow the long term value of the business (NPV) through increased tonnage, acquisition and finding new reserves, which all came with an increasing fixed cost base. Now with the financial crisis upon us and the collapse of commodity prices and demand, executives have adjusted their strategies as 'cash is king' and short-term cash flow, in some instances at the expense of long terms value, is the order of the day. For many mining companies, mine closures, reductions in production and cost cutting exercisers are now the focus. In many instances, management do not have an ability to rapidly test different strategic alternatives to 'test' the impact on value, unit costs, reserves and profitability at the operational level and optimize the underlying trade-off variables. Economic modelling of the complete business value chain is a means of linking the operational 'reality' and strategic choices, so that the full impact can be assessed. This paper describes some of the challenges facing mining executives and how economic modelling can be applied to make decision making more rigorous.

The land disposal of voluminous fine-grained tailings from the processing of mined ore bodies poses a long-term risk to the surrounding environment and local communities, while also representing a loss of valuable natural resources; including water, land and mined minerals. To date, the development and practical implementation of alternative approaches and technologies for removing risk and reducing the burden associated with these wastes, particularly in South Africa, remains limited, and value recovery is largely limited to the extraction of precious metals. To this end, researchers at the University of Cape Town have developed a programmatic multi-phased approach to explore and develop opportunities for the valorisation of large-volume mine wastes, based on the innovation value chain. This paper outlines this conceptual approach and presents key outcomes from its application for the specific case of sulfide-bearing coal processing wastes from South African collieries. Through the application of a combination of qualitative and quantitative tools and methodologies, a number of potentially viable opportunities and processing routes for value recovery and bulk re-purposing of these wastes have been identified and tested on a laboratory scale. Studies have, however, also shown that there are several technical and non-technical factors currently constraining commercial application of these opportunities. Overcoming these constraints will require a commitment to innovative waste management approaches and effective multi-sectoral collaboration. Sulfide-type tin deposits in Russia are characterised by the complex mineral composition of ores and dump products of their processing. Tin-sulfide ores contain industrial quantities of copper, lead, zinc, tungsten, silver, rare and trace elements (indium, scandium, etc.). In addition, the ores are characterised by uneven dissemination of sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, etc.) and tin minerals (cassiterite, stannine, etc.). X-ray phase and spectral analysis, scanning electronic microscopy (SEAM), laser SIM and AFM microscopy helped to identify the selective fixing of sodium dibutyl dithiocarbamate (DBDTC) on chalcopyrite and galena, as well as the tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) and IM-50 on cassiterite. For the first time, collectors and flocculants of slurry fractions of silver and tin, thermomorphic polymers TMPF were used to isolate more than 80% silver from the tin tailings of the Solnechny mine into a copper-silver rough concentrate. It has been established that preliminary ultrasonic treatment and desliming according to the 0.02 mm class removes up to 20% of sludge material, which impairs the process of gravity separation. The combined flotation-gravity scheme using new reagent compositions helped to obtain tin concentrate with a tin content of 5.42%, which meets the requirements for further metallurgical processing (at least 5%). Fine particle beneficiation plays an ever-increasing role in mineral processing plants and it seems that technology can’t keep up with the challenges involved in the treating of these fines. The REFLUX™ classifier has proven itself able to treat high tonnages of fine material, especially in the coal industry. There are various fine ore applications that can benefit from such a process, yet laboratory and pilot-scale tests on many of these ores show poor efficiencies and recoveries. A better understanding of the design, operation and mechanisms of the REFLUX™ classifier is required to determine if and how it fits into these applications. The mechanisms in gravity separators are very complex due to the complex hydrodynamics, and the REFLUX™ classifier is no exception. The mechanisms of these systems are usually described through theoretical single particle-models that are hard to verify through analysing the feeds and products of these processes. To verify these models the movement of individual particles must be measured, which is not an easy task. In this paper the separation mechanisms in the incline channels of the REFLUX™ classifier were investigated with high-speed videography. A small lab scale model of the incline channel was constructed for this purpose. It was possible to capture and track the trajectories of particles under certain conditions and match these trajectories with theoretical models. The AK6 kimberlite is situated 25 km south of the Debswana Orapa Mine in Botswana and was discovered by De Beers geologists in 1969 during the follow-up of geophysical targets in the Orapa area. The kimberlite was not extensively pursued at the time as the initial bulk sampling indicated it to be of limited size and low grade, factors largely contributed to by the basalt breccia capping. Completion of high resolution integrated geophysical techniques and drill bulk sampling to depth recovered 97 tons of kimberlite during 2003 and 2004, which led to the increased size and grade estimates. Bulk sampling by Large Diameter Drilling (LDD, 23 inch diameter) commenced in 2005; 13 holes were drilled to a cumulative depth of 3,699 m and 689 carats of diamonds were recovered. In July 2006 the De Beers Mineral Resource Classification Committee classified these Phase I LOO results at a High Inferred level with an average grade of 24 carats per hundred tonnes (cpht) at a bottom cut-off of +1 mm, and a modeled average diamond value of 150 dollars per carat. A second phase of LDO drilling was initiated in 2006, and bulk sampling by trenching commenced in 2007 in order to deliver a resource estimate at indicated level. An Indicated Resource of 11.1 million carats at an average grade of 22 cpht was declared for the deposit mining lease application lodged in 2007.

I was surprised to read that this grant was first introduced in 1984 as it was awarded to me (albeit under the auspices of The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London) as long ago as 1964, and I spent two very profitable months in Sweden at that time. Training in job-skills * A South African mine is leading the way in providing alternative job-skills to staff in a bid to upgrade services in local communities and create greater economic empowerment. In recent months, 85 employees of the Associated Manganese Mine (ASSMANG) in the Western Cape have learnt skills as diverse as candlemaking, shoemaking, concrete-product manufacturing, and brick production through a newly established community training centre.

(Visitor) This paper sets out to show how changing forces are affecting the techniques that have been used in the evaluation of Black jobs on gold mines in the Anglo American Group since the introduction of job evaluation in 1961. Initially, job evaluation was essentially a management tool designed to differentiate jobs in a limited skill spectrum and thereby permit the establishment of a 'many stepped' job ladder for Black employees to climb. With the changing wage pattern, job evaluation is becoming an industrialrelations tool aimed at recognizing the skill and effort contributed by the worker so that the pay relationships between jobs are seen to be equitable by the employees.

The dramatic strengthening of the rand against the dollar as well as a decline in quantity and quality of locally available concentrates have had a dramatic impact on Zincor?s operations during the previous two years. Zincor has responded with the implementation of a number of technical improvements to the process to decrease cost and increase revenue and plant flexibility. Among the initiatives is the pre-leaching and pelletising of the zinc concentrate, de-bottlenecking and process improvements in the leach and purification circuits, the introduction of cathode washing and automated cathode stacking in the cell house and the installation of a new furnace to produce pre-alloyed jumbos. This paper will describe these initiatives and others that Zincor have recently taken to stay competitive in changing global base metals market.

This paper reports on a test that was conducted underground in a mine for two years on the following: pipes coated with paint, fusion-bonded powder, metal, or impregnated tape; and aluminium, stainless-steel, 3CR12, and plastic pipes. It was found that the degree of corrosivity and mechanical damage increases substantially from the shaft of a mine towards the stope. Thus, the range of coatings that can be used successfully is fairly large in the shaft and haulageways, but corrosion-resistant materials, especially corrosion-resistant steels, need to be used close to the stope. A study of the relative costs involved showed the costs of pipes of low-carbon steel and unplasticized polyvinyl chloride to be lowest, and those of epoxy-coated steel pipes to be highest.

An essential requirement for the planning of the global capacity of a mine is a knowledge of the functional relationship between the production level and the capital expenditure necessary to establish that level. An underlying mechanism connecting capital expenditure and mine production capacity is proposed in terms of a characteristic profile of the expenditure that both precedes and succeeds production expansion. By the assignment of a representative shape to this profile, the capital expenditure of individual mines can be modelled. The empirical values describing the characteristic profile are computed for a number of gold mines, and an attempt is made to explain variations in the model coefficients from mine to mine in terms of physical parameters such as shaft depth, shaft concentration, and average rate of depth increase during the life of the mine.

On the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the South African School of Mines, this paper presents a historical review of the tertiary mining education carried out by the School of Mines in Kimberley and the subsequent institutions in Johannesburg. In addition to recording and evaluating a century of mining education, it describes the current activities of the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, which is believed to be the natural successor to the School of Mines. The comparison of earlier and contemporary academic mining activities reflects a gradual transition from the educational philosophy and objectives of a school of mines to those of a modem university department. In the conclusions, some aspects of the educational effort expended during the past hundred years are briefly highlighted.

The role of research and development In the South African gold-mining industry Presidential Address given by M. D. G. SALAMON, Fellow, Dipl. Eng. (Mining) (Hungary), Ph.D. (Durham) The decision of the gold-mining industry in 1974 to embark on a major ten-year research and development programme was widely publicized at the time. In choosing a subject for this address, I felt almost obliged to use this opportunity to give an account of the progress of this undertaking. On reflection, however, I felt that a simple progress report would not suffice. It seemed important that the programme should be shown in persepective, and that its aims should be outlined to the mining and metallurgical engineering community, many of whom are vitally concerned with the well-being of the gold-mining industry.

After a brief review of the characteristics of clay minerals and their origin, a summary is given of the industrial uses of different types of clay materials. The mining and beneficiation of clays are discussed, with special reference to the upgrading of certain types of materials. The occurrence and resources of the more important varieties of clays are dealt with in some detail, viz residual kaolin derived from granite and sediments, brickmaking clays, refractory clays, bentonite, and palygorskite. The Republic of South Africa is well endowed with a wide spectrum of clay materials, with one important exception. Kaolin suitable for paper coating is not known to occur in the Republic, and efforts to beneficiate and treat local materials to achieve the desired properties have so far been unsuccessful.

This paper describes the design and implementation of the dispatching system at LAB Chrysotile Inc.'s Black Lake Mine Operation, Quebec, Canada. The initial system uses a computer in a passive role, to record and display information in ongoing operations. Simulation studies were undertaken at McGill University to assess various heuristic dispatching rules which can be program- med and inserted into the dispatching system. The computer can then suggest to the operator where a truck should be sent to maximize productivity or improve fleet efficiency. The study stresses the importance of considering the effects of implementing computerized systems on those individuals who must use these systems in their daily work. The roles of individuals from the industry and the university in this joint project are also highlighted.
