The flolation behaviour of some Australian uranium ores was investigated. Although uraninite and pitchblend float readily with fatty acids, selective concentration to produce an economically discardable tailing has not yet been achieved. This is attributed to the presence in the ores of a quantity of uranium mineral in finely dispersed form which is very difficult to liberate. For some of the ores, at least, the proportion of this material decreases with increase in head assay.Flotation may be a useful concentrating method for some Australian ores if uranium oxide is to be sold in a free competitive market.

Surface subsidence caused by coal mining operations was the subject of a very successful symposium organised by the Illawarra Branch of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in February, 1973. This symposium dealt with the principles of subsidence and overseas experiences arising out of underground mining. Since that time the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources and Development (formerly the Department of Mines) has incorporated in the approval for pillar extraction certain conditions related to the monitoring of surface movement. Surveys and plans are required to be kept at mines where total or partial extraction of coal takes place. This paper traces the monitoring of surface movement in the Northern Coalfields of New South Wales over the past ten years. Reference is made to the National Coal Board's Subsidence Engineers' Handbook (1975) and how the guidelines expressed therein have been beneficial. Mining engineers in Australia are able to plan underground workings where minimum subsidence is allowable and are in a position to foreshadow the surface effects where total pillar extraction is carried out. In certain cases such surface effects can be minimised by structural design in buildings or pipelines.

Prefeasibility planning and cost estimation of conveyor systems has historically been undertaken by comparing fixed plant transport requirements to that of similar systems in service. This paper describes the development of a prefeasibility conveyor technical design and cost estimation application using Microsoft Excel Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) platform. The application tool known as D-Convey (Dachshund Convey) was developed with the goal enabling the end user:- to develop a technical model for conceptualised conveyor systems,- to perform economic analysis on the developed technical model, and - to conduct a comparative and risk analysis.An Excel VBA based platform was utilised to draw upon both the analytical and graphical capabilities of a spreadsheet. Some of the features of D-Convey system include a revolutionary dynamic graphical help system, known as the 'information pane' in lieu of traditional help files as well as the use of familiar graphical user interface elements such as the MS Office 2007 task ribbon. The D-Convey system incorporates material database allowing for mass handling prefeasibility estimation in other industries; it has been validated at a local quarry.

The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. The dissolution of the naturally occurring mineral zircon (ZrSiO4) is examined after ball milling it with magnesium oxide for up to 100 hours in a laboratory mill. There was little effect on the solubility for the initial two hours where size reduction of the zircon was considered to be the dominant effect. Beyond two hours the dissolution increased as a function of the square root of milling time. X-ray diffraction of the powders did not reveal the identity of the soluble phase. However, a nanocrystalline phase was present after milling and this is thought to be the soluble phase.

Yallourn brown coal and its characteristics have been the subject of innumerable papers and discussions. The Lurgi process adopted for the production of Towns gas by the gasification of brown coal has been described frequently in literature.The application of the Lurgi process for the gasification of Yallourn briquettes has naturally lead to some unexpected problems. Rather than attempt to review the whole field of experience gained in the first two years of operation of the gasification plant at Morwell, this paper attempts to describe two problems encountered, peculiar to the fuel used, and the steps taken in overcoming them.THE PROCESS AND PLANTTo clarify the conditions surrounding the problems, it is necessary to briefly describe the gasification and cooling processes and plant.Brown coal briquettes are gasified in a pressure generator, using a mixture of steam and oxygen as a gasifying medium. Crude gas produced in the generator is washed and cooled in the waste heat boiler and coolers. Figure 1 shows an arrangement of the generator and coolers. The gasifying medium enters the generator through a hollow shaft in the base. The Gekko InLine Pressure Jig (IPJ) was unleashed on the World gravity separation market in 1996 and has since sold over 150 units in applications including tin, diamonds, silver, coal, garnet and gold. During the past twelve years the knowledgebase of the best applications and capabilities of the IPJ has greatly increased. Improvements to the original IPJ design have included engineered ceramic ragging in specific gravities from 1.6 to 5.0, full automation and improved designs of feed presentation and tailings and concentrate handling systems. The IPJ has been found to be able to handle a wide feed size range and recover mineral at liberation size without significant addition of water to the mass balance. Test work carried out during full-scale operation of the IPJ has shown the IPJ can recover diamonds down to 0.5 mm, sulfides down to 0.3 mm and gold down to 0.1 mm which greatly expands its application in the mineral processing industry. A significant volume of data now supports the symbiotic benefits of an IPJ and flotation circuit combination to pre-concentrate an ore and minimise downstream processing requirements.

Sulfide chimney samples collected during the 1998 - 1999 R/V Atlantis û DSV Alvin 3 - 30 research cruise have been examined and classified into four types, based on common characteristics. Chimney morphology is the most important characteristic and resulted in the following groups: 1. flutes, 2. cones, 3. wide-flats, and 4. beehives. Other characteristics resulted in the classification of subgroups within the flute, cone and wide-flat groups. The combination of characteristics, including; the presence of an orifice, internal chimney fabrics, wall thickness, extent of weathering, and the presence of Alvinella worm casts, enable evolutionary trends between the different chimneys types to be established. These trends indicate that with time, flutes evolve from immature zoned chimneys with a central orifice and smooth thin-walls, into cone chimneys with thick walls and massive fabrics which have their orifices infilled by massive sulfides, and a rough exterior. Repeated mineralisation within, cones may result in the formation of wide-flat chimneys. Beehive chimneys can form at any time during chimney growth.

Gladstone Hill, a volcanic-hosted low-sulfidation epithermal prospect in the Coromandel Peninsula, is less than 1 km from the world-class Martha Hill Au-Ag deposit. Gold-silver-bearing quartz veins occur in Late Miocene andesitic volcanic rocks of the Waipupu Formation that are extensively altered. The occurrence, spatial distribution and temporal relationships of hydrothermal minerals have been determined along two cross sections that transect the Amaranth, Gladstone, Cowshed and Moonlight veins. Quartz and pyrite are ubiquitous along these sections. Adularia and chlorite are widespread, but both are scarce in wall rocks adjacent to the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. By contrast, rare hydrothermal albite and epidote are restricted to wall rocks surrounding the Amaranth vein. Illite, which replaces adularia, is widespread and grades laterally eastwards into a zone of interstratified illite-smectite that envelops the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. During late-stage hydrothermal activity, rare calcite formed at depth and uncommon kaolinite and alunite formed at shallow levels. The overall clay mineral zonation with illite grading eastward into interstratified illite-smectite reflects paleothermal gradients of >220¦C to -170¦C towards the margin. The alteration assemblage of quartz, adularia, chlorite, albite, epidote, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and pyrite reflects formation from a near-neutral to weakly alkaline pH chloride water that contained low concentrations of CO2, Late calcite formed from very local descending steam-heated CO2rich water, whereas the rare assemblage of kaolinite and alunite formed from shallow steam-heated acid-sulfate water. Analysis of the available data indicates that the Martha Hill deposit and the Gladstone Hill area formed within a single large geothermal system. We infer that the Martha Hill deposit formed in the main upflow zone, whereas the Gladstone Hill area may have formed adjacent to this upflow zone.

The Leigh Creek Coalfield is owned and operated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia to supply fuel to the Northern Power Station. To supply electricity at lowest cost, a costing and decision process that establishes the role of the Leigh Creek Coalfield in the overall system planning and operation is required. The costing is integrated in that it is based not just on a particular mine plan but on the wider need to supply a particular electrical demand. The detail costing has evolved over time from manual to main-frame computer to microcomputer techniques. Now there is a choice between fast consistent costs and a slower but more detailed and flexible costing.

Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along theWaiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of æplatinumÆ were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni.   Exsolution of osmium and iridium from Pt-Fe alloy and Pt-Fe alloy from iridium is observed Several PGM host mineral inclusions which vary from single to poly-phase, display rounded to equant outlines and range in diameter from greater than 100 ¦m to less than 5 ¦m. Olivine and Ni-sulphide inclusions are only present within IPGE alloys. Pt-Fe alloy, cooperite, braggite and sperrylite host Cu-Fe sulphides, a wide variety of PGM, clinopyroxene, amphibole, magnetite and plagioclase within inclusions. Sperrylite also hosts Pd bismuthiotellurides, gold and several potassium-rich silicate phases. Similarities in inclusion phases and mineral chemistry from several localities suggest that the PGM are derived from a single (as yet unidentified), probably calc-alkaline magmatic source. This source is situated somewhere along the margins of the western Southland sedimentary basin where PGM liberated by erosion are transported down the Waiau River and dispersed eastwards along the coast by strong longshore currents.

An accurate knowledge of the chemical, mineralogical and physical characteristics of ores and mineral products that are mined, processed and traded is crucial to effective resource utilisation, plant design, process optimisation and finally quality control to ensure that contract specifications are met. However, all too often the responsibility for sampling is entrusted to managers and personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of collecting representative samples for analysis, and everyone seems satisfied as long as some material is collected and returned to the laboratory for analysis. Furthermore, sample stations incorporated into the design of new plants are often the first casualties when cost cutting exercises commence. This needs to change, because there is little point in accurately analysing samples if they are not representative in the first place. The resultant analyses can be next to meaningless and the effort taken to analyse such samples is to a large extent a waste of time and resources.Ultimately, a poor knowledge of the characteristics of ores and mineral products limits the ability of mining companies to optimise the life of ore resources and plant performance, and failure to meet final product specifications can have disastrous consequences, including price penalties and more seriously loss of sales contracts. Mineralisation was identified at Gladstone Hill as far back as the late 1870s-early 1880s, shortly after the initial discovery of mineralisation at what is now the Martha Mine. Indeed, early recovery problems associated with the Martha mineralisation led to the preferred development of ore bodies within what is now the Union Hill Joint Venture tenement; ore bodies such as Silverton, Amaranth, and Union to name a few. Gladstone Hill forms the basis of the Union Hill Joint Venture, a 50:50 joint venture managed by Au-Ag Resources Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of Otter Gold Mines Ltd), and Welcome Gold Mines Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of the Normandy Group). The joint venture participants also operate the adjacent Martha Mine. Mineralisation of Gladstone Hill, as with mineralisation at the adjacent Martha Mine, has been interpreted as a low sulphidation epithermal Ag-Au system hosted within hydrothermally altered andesites of the lower Coromandel Group. Drilling in recent years has successfully identified extensive mineralisation associated with a number of vein sets throughout the tenement including the Gladstone Vein set, the Moonlight Lode and more recently along a north-easterly trend towards the historic Favona workings. A wide range of vein styles is apparent, ranging in character from thin stock works to broader lode-style banded chalcedonic to cherty quartz and have been interpreted as representing multiple phases of emplacement. At shallower levels mineralisation is often hosted by vein clasts within vent breccias. Visible gold is rare, with mineralisation generally associated with very fine-grained pyrite, arsenopyrite and minor electrum. Percentage levels of combined sphalerite-galena-(+/- chalcopyrite) have been intersected at depth however these have been gold poor to date. The potential for the Gladstone Hill area remains to be clearly defined as drilling to date has yet to close off mineralisation both along strike and down dip. If further drilling is successful, the joint venture partners believe Gladstone Hill could contribute significantly to the economic future of current operations.

Deposits of the metalloids arsenic and antimony occur in quartz veins of mesothermal hydrothermalsystems in the South Island as arsenopyrite (AsFeS) and stibnite (Sb2S3). Arsenopyrite and stibnite occur in natural exposures in gold-mining areas, and additional arsenopyrite and stibnite have been exposed to the atmosphere by mining activity. At present the drinking water limits for dissolved As and Sb are 10 ppb and 3 ppb respectively. Sampling and analysis techniques are critical to determination of metalloid concentrations at these low levels. Endeavour Inlet in the Marlborough Sounds is an historic mining area (late 19th Century) with elevated As and Sb in waters emanating from mineralised rocks. Waters running out of abandoned adits have concentrations of As and/or Sb up to ppm levels. Natural waters have high Sb and low As, and the As levels increase markedly where anthropogenic activity has exposed rock. Changes in Sb/As ratio could potentially be used to quantify the anthropogenic component of metalloid mobility on mine sites on the 100-year time scale.

In November 1999 Waihi Gold Mining Company commissioned its new crushing and conveying plant used to transport both ore and waste from the Martha Mine to its ore processing plant and also its tailings dam construction area. To date, a record monthly throughput of 854 000 tonnes throughput has been achieved. This paper outlines the measures taken subsequent to the commissioning of the system to achieve greater than design throughput and to mitigate the environmental and safety issues associated with operating the system in the middle of a town.

The Martha Hill project operates with a nett surplus of water, due to the catchment of rainwater on the tailings dam and the requirement to de-water the open pit mine. It is necessary to discharge this surplus, treated as required, to the Ohinemuri River which flows past the process plant.   The treatment plant, adjacent to the process plant, handles all effluent from the Martha Hill operation including water pumped from the mine, excess water from the tailings decant, and seepage from the tailings dam underdrains. To-date the plant has treated and discharged over 800 000 tonnes of water.
