Heightened environmental consciousness has resulted in the development of various international accords dealing with natural resource management. This international awareness is now being translated into regional and local initiatives that proactively implement collaborative environmental management programs. One such program was recently initiated in northern Chile in recognition of the interconnection of Andean salars. Cooperative efforts between industry, governmental agencies and academic professionals have resulted in the implementation of simultaneous environmental monitoring of flora and fauna in the salars of northern Chile. This coordinated effort is leading to an improved understanding of the migratory patterns of South American fauna, as well as improved access to an expanded database for the multiple user groups associated with the Andean salars. The El Abra Mine is actively participating in these coordinated monitoring efforts.

The Rasmussen Ridge phosphate mine is owned by Agrium CPO and operated by a unit of Washington Group International. The mine, located in southeastern Idaho, received the Idaho Inter-Agency Reclamation Award from the Idaho Department of Lands. The phosphate mine, located northeast of Soda Springs, was honored for “Excellence in Ongoing Operations, Soft Rock Mines over 75Acres.” Charles Ross is Agrium CPO’s plant manager. He said, “We are honored to receive this award. This recognizes the commitment and dedication of our employees toward the protection of the environment. I am really proud of the people that work at the mine.”

"GENERAL PROJECT DATA The Sparvo Tunnel belongs to “Variante di Valico” project, a new 65 km highway link between Bologna and Florence, designed to renew the existing A1 route and to connect in a faster way Bologna and Flor-ence. It is composed of a 2,5 km twin tunnel excavated in a complex geological context, characterized by the presence of a series of surface landslides and methane gas. The gradient is 2.6 % and the minimum radius is 1’400 m. The internal diameter of the precast seg-ment lining, equivalent to the final section of the tunnel, is 13.6 m. MAIN TBM SPECIFICATIONS TBM Earth Pressure Balanced S-574 “Martina”, manufactured by Herrenknecht, has a theoretical excava-tion diameter of 15’615 mm. It is equipped with a conical shield 12.2 m long and four back-up gantries. The total length of the machine is approximately 130 m, weighing approximately 4’500 tons. The total installed power is 16’800 kW. The main drive has a diameter of 8’700 mm and has a triple axis roller type bearing equipped with a labyrinth system including 4 sealing lips. TIME SCHEDULE OF INITIAL TBM DRIVE A time schedule of the initial TBM drive is presented in the following list: •,August 25, 2011: start of the excavation of the 1st drive of the Sparvo tunnel •,October 29,2011: stop of the advance of the TBM for gear oil contamination and clogging •,October 29 to December 20, 2011: repair works on the main drive system and modifications on the conditioning system •,December 20,2011 to July 25, 2012: restart excavation of the 1st drive (north tunnel) and its breakthrough •,July 25 to November 29, 2012: 180° turning of the TBM, detailed check of the main drive seal-ing system and fixing problems on gear boxes, race ring, clamping ring and cutting wheel •,November 29,2012 to July 24, 2013: excavation of the 2nd drive (south tunnel) and its break-through •,August 2013 to July 31, 2014: disassembly of the TBM (first 4 months) and standstill of the jobsite for structural issues on precast concrete lining of the tunnel •,July 31, 2014 to March 10, 2015: inspection, dismantling and packaging of each part of the main drive (flange ring, gear box housing and main bearing). Whether you buy your minicomputer from a manufacturer or another vendor, the first thing you must do is define your needs. With good planning, the initial cost will be low and your return on investment will be maximized over the long term. Involving all members of your staff who will he using the new computer in the planning phase is also important. Their participation will alleviate any potential concerns they may have about new equipment, and their suggestions will provide valuable input for your specifications. After you define your proposed system, survey available hardware and software. The survey will help you in the next step, preparation of specifications. The specifications, along with a quote request, are then sent to various manufacturers. Consider the Manufacturer When selecting your minicomputer, one important item to consider is the manufacturer. Remember, when you buy a computer, you're also buying the services of a computer company. A firm that makes a commitment to its customers and provides a product that is field tested before releasing it for sale is preferable. Examine the company's maintenance and support packages, since every machine requires preventive maintenance. Does your manufacturer or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) support service sites in your area? Has their service record been commendable? Will they provide training for your personnel and a supply of circuit boards so you can retain a degree of self-service autonomy? Three methods of buying a computer involve the manufacturer, an OEM, and the systems house. Buying direct from the manufacturer means you go straight to the source, using no middleman. This gives you maximum flexibility; you can consider every alternative and many possible combinations of computers, peripherals, and software until you find exactly the right system for you. The OEM buys computers direct from the manufacturer and builds them into his own computerized, special purpose product. He usually sells a complete package, including software and hardware, and often noncompetitive equipment as well (a scientific or engineering instrument, for example), designed for the mining market. Because he offers a packaged product, the OEM can often charge less for the system than if you put the pieces together yourself. In many ways, the OEM also provides a unique system. And while the OEM sells a packaged solution, he also usually has the special market knowledge necessary to modify the system to meet your unique needs, if necessary.

Before and during in situ mining at the Santa Cruz In Situ Copper Mining Research Project test site, hydraulic testing was conducted at injection and recovery test wells to characterize patterns of fluid movement in the 5-spot well field. Testing included borehole spinner flow meter surveys, single-well and multiple-well injection and recovery tests, straddle packer injection tests, and bromide pulse tracer tests. Results of hydraulic testing for determination of fluid flow regimes were used to modify well and mining zone hydraulics for the purpose of increasing fluid migration in flow pathways of the mining zone with higher copper grade.

An appropriate scale-up methodology is very useful for ball mill design and optimization of the grinding circuit. To date, the scale-up is based on the selection and breakage function model using lab mill data. However, a major drawback of that approach is that the charge motion in a lab mill is vastly different from that in a large industrial mill. Therefore, in the methodology proposed here, first the energy of individual collision in the mill is computed employing the discrete element method (DEM). Then the breakage of particles as a function of collision energy is studied in a separate experiment. Together, this information constitutes what is known as collision energy based population balance model. The appropriateness of this model is shown for different batch grinding mills.

This paper focuses on the separation and extraction of lead and zinc from Egyptian ore at the Eastern Desert close to Red Sea. The ore sample contains cerussite, galena, hemimorphite and other impurities. Experimental program includes flotationof galena using xanthate collector and cerussite using oleic acid as collector and sodium silicate to depress hemimorphite tailing. Galena, and hemi-morphite are converted to carbonate with sodium carbonate prior to metal extraction. Lead and zinc are extracted pyrometallurgically at 1050°C and750°C or electrochemically respectively. The overall performance of the applied method amounts to 99.2%. Extraction efficiency of lead and zinc amounts to 98% and 94.5 % respectively. A model assumed that galena and cerussite in the ore are partially oxidized and can be liberated by grinding. Oleic acid selectively reacts with cerussite in a multistep sequence. Preliminary cost estimate shows that the price of the products is competitive to their local market prices.

Introduction Some people say it is almost impossible to get mining permits in California. Some say the day of the lone mining entrepreneur is past. And some say you cannot make money mining gold where old-timers have already mined it, especially in Tertiary gravels. But a young mining operator and SME member, Tim Callaway, is proving these ideas wrong. Callaway's company, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc., has the necessary permits for its Gardner's Point gold mine in Sierra County, CA. And, Callaway has secured funds for the 7.7 km'/d (10,000 cypd) Tertiary gravel operation. The company's initial goal is to produce 373 to 466 kg/a (12,000 to 15,000 oz per year) of gold at Gardner's Point mine at a cost of less than $6.43/g ($200 per oz). Feasibility studies are currently being conducted to consider product levels up to the 1555 kg/a (50,000 oz per year) involving additional plants and infrastructure. While exploring for other hard-rock properties, the Brush Creek company already operates the Brush Creek lode gold mine. The mine sits high on a ridge south of Goodyear's Bar, which is located on the North Yuba river. It might be noted that the Brush Creek mine has been the subject of media stories recounting how a mine can operate with sensitivity to the environment. Gardner's Point project In 1983, Callaway negotiated with the Gardners Point Ltd. Partnership for control of the Gardner's Point property. The Partnership had been engaged for three years in securing permits, mapping and drilling, and test mining. The Partnership actually mined about 43.5 dam3 (57,000 cu yd) of gravel, which yielded 25.2 kg (810 oz) of free gold. Later, the Brush Creek company acquired ownership of the property. The company then began its own exploration and development program. As underground development proceeded at the Brush Creek mine, plans matured for a high-volume operation at Gardner's Point. Australian and English investors contacted Callaway. A joint venture was negotiated. The Australian owners became majority participants; the Brush Creek company, a minority participant and the operator. The Australian investors agreed to contribute $3.5 million (60%) to the Brush Creek Joint Ventures. The Brush Creek company will contribute its expertise as well as assets and liabilities valued at $2.3 million (40%). About $2 million has been allocated to the Gardner's Point project. Later, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc. sold 50.4% of the company's common stock to English investors for $5.4 million. Callaway negotiated this private placement, which permits further exploration of projects being investigated. Geography and history The Gardner's Point mine is located in the northern Sierra Nevada of California, about 9.6 km (6 miles) east of the little town of La Porte in Plumas County. The mine lies high on a ridge above Slate Creek, which divides Plumas and Sierra Counties. La Porte is accessible from the Sacramento area by a winding, paved, two-lane highway. But the mine is reached only by two different unpaved county and Forest Service roads. Both roads include steep grades in and out of the Slate Creek canyon. Effects of the August 1995 failure of the Omai tailings dam in Guyana continue to be felt throughout the mining industry. This article is taken from the final report of the independent body of experts commissioned by the government of Guyana to establish the cause of the failure. It explains what happened, why and how to avoid it in the future. Despite environmental, health and safety effects that were negligible by any objective measure, the failure has received wide international attention. Coming on the heels of the shift in exploration targets and development opportunities to developing countries, it has intensified interest in tailings dam safety and environmental management issues. An informed understanding of the nature of the failure and its effects is key to responding to these concerns.

The usage of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is increasing rapidly throughout the Mining Industry, especially in the Industrial Minerals sector. GIS provides an efficient and robust link between spatial (often CADD) and tabular (database/spreadsheet) components. Mineral economists and corporate planners employ GIS to perform market analyses, to source raw materials, and to schedule and monitor deliveries to customers. Exploration and acquisition groups apply spatial analysis to identify high quality resources that meet economic guidelines. Mining regulators and environmental affairs departments expedite and monitor permitting, environmental compliance, and best management practices reclamation through GIS data management and Electronic Permitting. Operations staffs monitor overburden removal, material extraction, quality control, and stockpile volumes with GIS. This paper summarizes the many aspects of GIS in Industrial Minerals. It also introduces and addresses issues and concerns commonly encountered during a mining GIS implementation.

The mining industry?s traditional preference for protective coatings in corrosive environments, due to cost considerations, has been to apply galvanized and epoxy coatings. As a result of extreme pH levels and the limitations of current products, a new coating has been developed to withstand severe conditions. Harsh chemicals and corrosive groundwater pose added challenges to mines in maintaining long term ground support which demands continuous rehabilitation. The discovery that triggered the current gold rush in southeastern Peru was made in about 1975 along the Rio Madre de Dios in Madre de Dios Department (Fig. 1). About 5000 to 10,000 miners (called chichiqueros) were working in the area as of 1990. Placer mining is the principal source of revenue for people living along the Rio Inambari and west of Puerto Maldonado. As in past gold rushes, working and living condition are harsh. Supplies are expensive, and the area has poor access compared with other areas in Peru. Food, fuel and all mining supplies are trucked over dirt roads from Cuzco, a three-to-five-day trip (Fig. 1). Some material also comes from Brazil. Many placers have a similar life cycle, beginning with small-volume mining (surface or underground). At the end of this small-scale mining, the placer is exhausted or it has a sufficient volume of gravel high enough in gold grade to be worked by large-volume methods, which lead to exhaustion of the resource. The level of maturity of a placer can be determined from its gold grade. The amount of gold production from large-volume mining can be predicted, given detailed, cumulative gold-production data on placer deposits during small-scale mining (Bliss et al., 1987). Using this general model, the authors analyzed the placers in the Rio Madre de Dios area. Small-volume mining Most placer mining in the Rio Madre de Dios area is in alluvial deposits either in or bordering the major rivers. Locally, some placer mining is in terrace deposits above the rivers. All minerals (including the subsoil) in Peru belong to the state. However, a mining claim (denuncia) is easily obtained for mineral exploitation. It is separate from property ownership.

Two alternative processes for the manufacturing of zircon products were investigated by the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa). These were the synthesis of doped-zircon pigments from plasma dissociated zircon, and an upgrading process to convert an inferior grade of zircon into a superior opacifier for ceramic applications. A solid-state reaction process was used to produce doped-zircon pigments. The influence on the colour intensity of the pigments on a ceramic tile were compared for milled and un-milled plasma dissociated zircon (PDZ) material, prior to calcination. Pr-yellow and V-blue zircon pigments produced from PDZ with different degrees of dissociation, were also evaluated. The second zircon beneficiation process entails the upgrading of an inferior grade of zircon to a superior opacifier for ceramic applications. A calcining process in the presence of mineralizers was used to produce the product in a conventional muffle furnace. A pre-milled inferior grade zircon concentrate, with a relatively high iron and alumina content generally not suitable for high quality ceramic applications, was used in this study. The influence of the upgrading process on the opacifying properties of the zircon material was compared to that of commercially available prime grade zircon opacifier products currently being produced in South Africa. The influence of a calcining step in the presence of mineralizers with regard to the milling characteristics of the treated zircon material was also evaluated.

Recent research has shown that traditional sensitivity, what if and best case/worst case analysis of metallurgical data has the potential to over estimate the value of mining projects. Use of simulations, which rely on the input of statistical information, may provide more realistic predictions of the value of future projects. Actual metallurgical data is used to demonstrate that analyzing the data from a statistical perspective can give insight into completing an optimum amount of metallurgical testing and a mechanism to determine that samples used for the testing are truly representative of the ore that will be processed.

The molecular structure of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups in nonionic surfactants has been related to the wetting and dispersion of selected pigments. The nonionic surfactants included in this study are acetylenic diol based surfactants and ethoxylated alkyl phenols. The Langmuir model could be used to fit adsorption data. Further analysis of the data showed that the free energy of adsorption was a function of adsorption density of the surfactants at the interface. The change in free energy with adsorption density could be interpreted by considering a change in the orientation of the adsorbed molecules. Acetylenic diol based surfatants were found to have an area per molecule of 2-3 times that of similarly ethoxylated alkyl phenols. The wetting and dispersion properties of lamp black, a model hydrophobic surface, by these surfactants were investigated by contact angle measurements and particle size analysis. Acetylenic diol based surfactants with ethylene oxide contents between3.5 and 10 moles per molecule and alkyl phenol based surfactants with approximately 9 moles of ethylene oxide per molecule were found to provide superior wetting abilities. Longer ethylene oxide chains were required for superior dispersion capabilities within each family of surfactants. Complete wetting and dispersion was found to occur above the critical micelle concentration of the surfactants.

KEECO has developed the Silica Micro Encapsulation (SME) technology for the treatment of acidic, metal-laden waters. Utilizing a silica-based chemical formulation that entails chemisorption and micro-encapsulation of heavy metals in a permanent silica matrix, encapsulated particles settle quickly and are effectively isolated from the surrounding environment, producing a stable sludge that is characteristically non-hazardous. In a number of independently-verified pilot and full-scale applications (including the Bunker Hill Mine, Leviathan Mine, Wheal Jane Mine, and Meldon Quarry), SME has been proven highly effective. The technology has been featured in a number of mining publications and selected for innovative technology awards.

By 1980, the U.S. mining community had reached a broad consensus regarding coal pillar design. The pillar load could be estimated from tributary area theory, and the pillar strength from empirical formulas and laboratory coal strength testing. Then the growth of longwall mining required new thinking. Recently, powerful design methods have emerged from analysis of large data bases of real-world pillar successes and failures. These include the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), the Mark-Bieniawski rectangular pillar strength formula, and guidelines for preventing massive pillar collapses. Sophisticated numerical models have also helped transform the pillar design landscape. In the process, our understanding of pillar mechanics has been greatly enriched.

Mining Ventures are considered as high risk projects and therefore managing the risks is inevitable. Risk assessment is an important part of the complex process of risk management, hence applying appropriated and practical methods for ranking the risks associated with projects, can help to perform a better risk management. In this research the applicability of using Techniques for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method for risk ranking in an underground mine, extracting by block caving method, was studied. Via this method, the risk associated with reserve estimation ranked as the first while in conventional method (P-I Matrix method) located in the sixteenth. Also there were significant differences in ranks of the other risks. Considering the more criteria, with different weights, in comparison with conventional methods, the results comprised from TOPSIS method are more reliable. By implementing this method risks are ranked better and more realistic and consequently then will be managed more efficient.
