The synthesis of high-purity ultra-fine barium strontium titanate powders (BST: BaO6Sro.4TiO3) has been performed in a non-transferred are D.C. thermal plasma reactor. Slurries of aqueous solutions of dissolved barium and strontium nitrates and solid titanium dioxide powders were used as precursors. Oxygen and argon were used as carrier gases, and pure argon and combinations of argon and nitrogen were used as plasma gases. The plasma torch power was varied, as well as the oxygen flow rate and the total molar concentration of the precursors. A graphite plate was designed to protect the torch electrode and lower the level of impurities in the product. A thermochemical analysis of the Ba(NO3)2-Sr(NO3)2-TiO2-H2O-O2 system was performed to predict the conditions for the formation of BST and the feasibility of the reaction, The powders collected from the different sections of the reactor were characterized using Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, and ICP chemical analysis. The powders produced showed high conversion to BST, ultra-fine particle size (< 30 rim) and high purity, which makes this a potential process to produce ceramic materials for electronic devices.

"The mechanical behavior and the fracture characteristics of composites with DGEB/TETA epoxy matrix reinforced with up to 30% in volume of continuous and aligned ramie fibers were evaluated by tensile tests. Specimens with selected thin fibers aligned along the tensile axis were room temperature tested to rupture. The fracture surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed significant increase in both the ultimate tensile strength and the elastic modulus. The fracture analysis indicated the possible mechanism for the fiber/matrix interaction, which could be responsible for the composite performance.IntroductionSince the middle of last century, polymer composites have substitute many conventional monolithic materials in applications ranging from aerospace to sport [l]. The main advantages of these composites are the low density and flexible properties specially using fiber as reinforcement to suit the mechanical performance requirements [2]. These are usually high strength and stiffuess requirements that could be reached with synthetic fibers such as gloss, carbon and aramid fibers. Its most commonly used example is ""fiberglass"", i.e., a thermoset polymer matrix composite reinforced with glass fiber. Indeed, ""fiberglass"" has a specific strength of the order of 500 MPa.cm3/g, which is the double of the strongest steels like the maraging. This motivated, at earlier times, ""fiberglass"" to replace many conventional materials including wood and natural fiber composites. Today, ""fiberglass"" has a wide range of uses from aerospace systems and appliances to sport and leisure components. However, its fabrication as well as those of any synthetic fiber such as carbon and aramid composites, requires a relatively large amount of energy. Presently, a growing concern exists regarding the consequences to the environmental by gases like C02 associated with both the energy consumption and the processing of synthetic fibers and their composites. These gases are well known responsible for global warming [3]."

Arsenic constitutes a major contaminant for the hydrometallurgical industry. Its removal and immobilization from process effluents typically involves lime neutralization and co-precipitation with ferric iron (Fe (III)/As(V)>3). Alternatively, precipitation of scorodite (FeAsO4?2H2O (cr)) may be applied to arsenic fixation. The mechanism of arsenic fixation in the former process has been suggested to be surface adsorption. Unequivocal characterization of these products is difficult because of their amorphous nature hence a variety of methods need to be applied including the particularly powerful method, extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. In this study, we have investigated the preparation of arsenate-adsorbed ferrihydrite with the purpose to compare its structure to that of Fe(III)-As(V) co-precipitates and scorodite (both amorphous and crystalline). Furthermore the solubilities of these Fe(III)-As(V) solids are measured as a function of pH. Their structures are elucidated and correlated to their solubilities and thereby the application of these findings to the practice of arsenic removal and disposal is assessed.

Almost 30% of steel in Japan is produced by electric arc furnace (EAF) treatment of iron scrap. EAF dust includes approximately 20 wt % of Zn and 3- 5 wt % of CI and is treated by the pyrometallurgical processes to recover Zn as Zn oxide. Direct hydrometallurgical processing is one of the most effective methods to recover high purity Zn. In this case, CI in the EAF dust is dissolved in the liquid phase by leaching, and the CI anion in electrolyte attacks anodes which are commonly made of a lead base alloy. Several processes have been proposed to remove CI anions from acidic sulfate solution. In this study, an electrolytic process was examined to eliminate CI anions from Zn sulfate electrolyte. From our study it can be said that the elimination rate of CI anion depends on the anode material ( i.e., the elimination rate is Pb-Ag alloy == Pb > DSE== Pt). In industrial Zn electrowinning process, the electrolyte contains Mn, which means the influence of Mn should be considered in the elimination of Cl. Mn dioxide deposition on an anode plate reduces the efficiency of CI removal. A periodical reverse current electrolytic system was examined to prevent this efficiency decrease, and deposited Mn dioxide could be removed very rapidly when the current is reversed. More than 95% of CI anion could be removed by this method in a shorter period than direct current method.

"Since the casting process affects the properties of castings, its computer simulation has been greatly developed in the last decades. This paper presents our recent works, especially on mold filling simulation, because most casting defects such as porosities and inclusions that greatly affect the properties originate during mold filling. The first topic is the mold filling simulation with consideration of cavity pressure change during mold filling, including direct observation of flow phenomena with X-ray and pressure measurement. The second .one is the mold filling simulation in the lost foam process, in which gasification of polystyrene pattern and gas outflow through the coating and mold have been considered. The simulation can predict not only the mold filling sequences but also periodical vibration of the gas layer between the melt and pattern. The third one is the comparison of simulation of Al melt flow in a metallic runner and direct observation through a transparent mold, showing that the entrapped gas or inclusions is expelled ahead through the melt and its simulation needs very fine meshes. These examples show that the comparison of simulation and observation is very important to develop the numerical simulation further.IntroductionThe mechanical properties of castings are greatly affected by casting defects such as porosities and inclusions, and solidification structure. Although recently the structure simulation has greatly progressed [1-4 ], the application in plants is very limited, because the structure is mostly determined by chemical compositions and cooling rate, enabling us to estimate it from the structure of past similar castings without simulation.On the other hand, the casting defects often vary with each casting or time. Among the defects, porosities and inclusions are main causes to deteriorate the properties and mostly originate during mold filling. Therefore, a lot of efforts to simulate the mold filling and estimate those defects have been made in the last decades [l,5,6]. These efforts have been mostly to develop numerical techniques to solve the Navier-Stokes equation. However, the flow phenomena in molds have not been well understood, because the direct observation of the flow phenomena in mold is not easy. This means the accuracy of the simulation is still not clear."

There is currently much interest in how extraction of gold and silver from ores with acidic thiourea solution compares with extraction using alkaline cyanide solution. Agitation leaching tests were performed by the Bureau of Mines on 14 precious metal ores using sodium cyanide (?NaCN) and thiourea [(NH2)2CS) as extractants. The objective was to compare the results of the two extractants. NaCN was used at a concentration of 2 g/L with and without H202 as an oxidant. (NH2)2CS was used at concentrations of 2 and 20 gjL, and the solution potential was controlled at 390 to 420 mV standard hydrogen electrode (Eh) with Fe2(S04)3. With both reagents a.t 2 g/L extractant levels, NaCN extracted more gold and silver than (NH2liCS from all of the ores. At 20 g/L (NH2)2CS compared with 2 g/L NaCN, (NH2)2CS extracted more gold than NaCN from two ores, the same amount from one ore, and more silver from one ore. NaCN extracted more gold than (NH2 )2CS from 10 ores and more silver from 4 ores.

"One of the critical variables to be controlled during arc welding is the size or geometry of the weld pool. The measurement of pool geometry has become an increasingly important problem with the advance of welding automation and control, and this paper addresses that problem. The basic concept of pool size estimation via measurement of pool dynamics is presented. The theory underlying this concept is discussed and is followed by a review of the current work in this area. It is concluded that pool dynamics can be characterized by natural frequencies of oscillation, for stationary welds, and that these can be measured by appropriate signal processing performed on the arc voltage. However, it appears that only full penetration welds show a strong correlation between weld size and natural frequency. Also, the extension of these results to the realistic case of moving welds has yet to be considered in detail. Nonetheless, this method of in-process measurement for real-time weld process control is still quite attractive where applicable since it can be accomplished simply by modifying the arc current schedule and by signal processing of the arc voltage.INTRODUCTUIONThe study of welding process control has been dominated by research into methods of in processing sensing of the weld pool geometry. While it has been shown feasible to measure the topside pool geometry using video methods [1,2], the penetration or backside bead width have remained elusive quantities. This is particularly true if a topside sensor location is required.The concept of using weld pool motion as a pool geometry sensing method was proposed by Hardt et al. [3] and later demonstrated by Hardt and Zacksenhouse [5] and Richardson and Renwick [6]. The concept is based on the fluid dynamics of a pool constrained by a solid container and by significant surface tension forces (i.e. a small shallow pool, not a ""pond"" or ""lake""). Such a pool, if subjected to external forces, will exhibit a surface motion is a function of that force, the properties of the fluid, the surface tension, and the shape of the container. Thus, if this motion can be excited and measured, and the relationship to the pool geometry determined, a means of sensing pool shape will exist."

"A novel mechanochemical processing technique for the preparation of zeolites from kaolinite in NaOH solution was investigated. Dry and wet mechanochemical treatments combined by subsequent moderate heat treatment could accelerate the synthetic reaction for zeolites from kaolinite. This stimulating process produced zeolite-A and zeolite-X from activated kaolinite at extremely lower reaction temperature than conventionally applied for zeolites production. Conversion to zeolite-A and zeolite-X was strongly dependent on the activated state of kaolinite. Wet mechanochemical treatment modified the chemical composition of activated solids. Rapid dissolution of AIO species rather than SiO ones in the reactant solution was accelerated by wet milling together with NaOH that promoted the formation of zeolite-X of high specific surface area.IntroductionZeolites are a family of hydrated alumina-silicate minerals contains alkali and alkaline earth metals. They have a framework structure that encloses inter-connected cavities occupied by large metal cations and water molecules. Zeolites are characterized for their ability toward ion exchange and reversible dehydration. Properties of them are exploited through commercial productions of particular structural and chemical features. Zeolites are used as commercial uses for catalysis for FCC (fluidized catalytic cracking) of petroleum refining, drying reagents of gases and liquids, and selective adsorbent for pollution control [1-3]. In such purposes, artificially synthesized zeolites are employed, although natural ones are associated with hydrothermal and hot spring alteration of volcanic materials. Commercially, a hydrothermal process has been used for the preparation of zeolite synthesis. This preparation method gives zeolites of high chemical homogeneity and purity, however, this wet-chemistry-based processing is significantly influenced by reaction temperature, pH, concentration, and composition of starting substances [4]."

As for treatment of zinc-containing wastewater, traditional SRB (Sulfate Reducing Bacteria) process was used, however, there exist two defects, like toxicity of heavy metal ions and high effluent COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) value. In this study, a new technique, called ISIS process (Immobilized SRB sludge beads with Inner cohesive carbon Source), in which SRB sludge is embedded in carrier of PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) with carbon source that adsorbed on certain material, is put forward for the first time to overcome the two defects existing in traditional SRB process. Furthermore, it has been shown that compared to traditional SRB process, ISIS process increases average zinc removal rate up 30%, average sulfate reduction rate up20%, and decrease average effluent COD value to meet discharge standards. If activated carbon is selected for carbon source adsorption and fixing material, and PVA for immobilization material, the zinc removal rate can reach above 98% under the conditions of 35 and pH 6. Meanwhile, the mechanism of zinc removal has been determinated according to the results from SEM (Scanning Electronic Microscope) and XRD (X-Ray Diffraction).

"Pickling sludge generated from stainless steel production process contains large quantity of Cr, Ni, and Fe. The disposal of and fill sludge directly not only leads to the heavy metal dissolves in the soil and underwater, but also loss value metals. However, the major mineral phases of value metal are hydroxides and there are lots of calcium fluoride and water in the sludge. So the pickling sludge has to be pretreated before reduction-magnetic separation. The TG analysis, reduction reaction and magnetic separation were all used to study the pickling sludge. The result indicated that up to 900°C the total weight loss of pickling sludge was 22.32%. The mass contents of Fe, Cr and Ni in the tailings (non-magnetic) were 4.27%, 0.067% and 0.041% respectively.IntroductionSince 21st century, the stainless steel production in the world has been continuously increasing because of its excellent performance [1]. However, high stainless steel production means a high pickling sludge production. For example, in a stainless steel plant with waste water quantity of 100m3 /h, the production of pickling sludge will exceed 15 Kt/a. Pickling is essential for generating of a homogeneous and corrosion-resistant surface during stainless steel production subsequent process. Pickling of stainless steels is predominantly carried out with an aggressive solution, sulfuric acid H2S04 or composed of nitric acid HN03 and hydrofluoric acid HF [2]. During the pickling process, the pickling acids are recovered through ion exchange and metal ions such as Fe3+, Cr3+ and Ni2+ get into the acids forming the pickling waste water [3]. Then, the pickling waste water is precipitated with lime, forming pickling hydroxide sludge. It is not feasible to recycle or treat the pickling sludge using conventional methods, because the sludge has high contents of calcium fluoride and water but low contents of iron, chromium and nickel. "Magnesium has been well known as one of the excellent agent of desulfurization, deoxidation, etc. in iron- and steelmaking because of its high reactivity. Since its production is energy nitensive, the price is very high. Thus magnesium has not widely been used as an agent in metal refining ·processes. In the present work, reduction of magnesia by carbon and aluminum is examined. Because the reaction is very sensitive to temperature, non-isothermal technique is applied to investigate the reaction kinetics. The effects of heating rate .and reaction interface area on the reaction kinetics .are studied. .A kinetic model is proposed based on the experimental results.IntroductionFor the metal refining processes, the production of high purity metal has been one of the most important research subject. In order to produce the high purity metal, the amount of the refining agent and the consumed energy is increasing. Therefore, if the future earth environment is taken into consideration, the further efficient and energy saving processes are required. Generally, Cao slag has mainly been used for desulfurization of molten iron as a desulfurization agent. However, environmental problems, such as recycling of disposal slags, are still unsolved. On the other hand, the deoxidation of molten steel is mainly performed by addition of aluminum. The affinity of magnesium with sulfur and oxygen is strong, and magnesium is well known as a powerful desulfurization and deoxidation agent. "This paper focuses on generating a quantitative microstructure prediction model for Scanning Laser Epitaxy (SLE) process based on coupled flow-thermal modeling using Finite Volume method. SLE is a laser-based additive manufacturing process for the deposition of equiaxed, directionally solidified and single-crystal nickel superalloys through the melting of alloy powders onto superalloy substrates. In the current work, the detailed effects of natural and Marangoni convection on the flow field are studied and the results are analyzed in terms of the temperature gradient, vorticity parameter, melt pool dimensions and mushy region extent. The detailed property data of the processed superalloy and the laser scan path are incorporated in the model to predict the microstructure in realistic scenario. An optimization study is carried out to evaluate the critical parameter values at which the columnar-to-equiaxed and the oriented-tomisoriented transition take place. This work is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research through grant N00014-11-1-0670.IntroductionSLE is a laser-based additive manufacturing process for the creation of structures in equiaxed, directionally solidified and single-crystal nickel superalloys through the selective melting and resolidification of superalloy powders. In SLE, a tightly focused laser beam is guided by a highspeed galvanometer scanners allowing for tight control of the amount of energy being applied to the top of the powder bed, as well as the speed at which the melt pool moves across the substrate. Under the proper operating conditions and with sufficient substrate meltback, the solidification microstructure follows the morphology of the underlying substrate, allowing for directional and even SX growth.Several reports on the modeling aspects of laser cladding-based additive manufacturing approaches can be found in the literature. Approaches based on Finite Element Methods (FEM) and Finite Volume Methods (FVM) are employed for the thermal modeling of the system [1, 2]. Gaumann coupled the Columnar to Equiaxed Transition (CET) modeling with the Rosenthal solution in earlier work based on laser cladding [3]. Rappaz et. al. provided a detailed modeling of the microstructure/columnar orientation based on the solidification velocity and crystalline orientation [4]. This approach is based on the selection of the growth direction that closely follows the melt pool normal direction. Later on, substrate orientation is also taken into account [5, 6]."

"In the synthesis process of ß -La2S3 via the sulfurization of La2O3 powder using CS2 gas, La2O2S was formed. This occurred at an initial stage of the reaction for sulfurization temperatures below 973K, and ß -La2S3 was also formed at a shorter period for higher sulfurization temperatures. It was found that the oxygen content in ß -La2S3 powders decreased gradually with an increase in sulfurization temperature. On the other hand, the carbon content in these powders increased gradually with an increase in the sulfurization temperature. Though it has been reported that ß -La2S3 was transformed to Y -La2S3 at 1723K± 50K, the sintered compact of double-phase Y -La2S3 and ß. -La2S3 was formed at a rather higher temperature of 1973K when the synthetic powder of ß -La2S3 containing a high amount of oxygen was used. However, phase transformation of -La2S3 to Y -La2S3 progressed preferentially with a decrease in the oxygen content of synthetic ß -La2S3 powder. The Seebeck coefficient of the sintered double-phase Y -La2S3 and -La2S3 was higher than that of the single-phase Y -La2S3, reported previously.Introduction La2S3 exists in three polymorphic forms that are similar to a series of Ce2S3, Pr2S3 and Nd2S3: a, ß , and Y'. The a -La2S3, which is stable at low temperature, is irreversibly transformed to ß -La2S3 of various compositions in the solid-solution range between La2S3 and La3S4, at 923 ± 50K. The -La2S3 may also be an oxysulfide of La10S14O2. Moreover, the ß .-La2S3 phase is transformed to Y -La2S3 ,which has a Th3P4 structure, at 1573 ± 100K. The melting point of Y -La2S3 is 2398 ± 30K where this temperature is similar to those of common refractory materials such as silica and alumina. Therefore, it can be predicted that y -La2S3 which has a high melting point and a thermodynamic stability due to the strong affinity of La for S, would have &high refractory character and chemical inertness in many molten metals. The y -La2S3, colored vivid faint yellow is stable up to 623K in air, where oxidation starts. y -La2S3 is frequently used as pigments for plastics and paints3. Furthermore, Y -La2S3 which is a semiconductor, is considered to be useful as a thermoelectric conversion materials, because it has a high Seebeck coefficient."

Economic and environmental benefits are motivating studies on natural fibers, especially lignocellulosic extracted from plants, have been studied to substitute synthetic fibers, such as glass fiber as reinforcement in polymer matrices. By contrast to synthetic fibers, natural fibers have the disadvantage of being heterogeneous in their dimensions specially the diameter. About the hemp fiber, little is known of their dimensional characteristics. The aim of the present work was to statistically characterize the distribution of the diameter of hemp fibers. Based on this characterization, diameter intervals were set and the dependence of the tensile strength of theses fibers with a corresponding diameter was analyzed by the Weibull method. The diameter was measured with precision using a profile projector. Tensile tests were conducted on each fiber obtain mechanical strength. The results interpreted by Weibull statistical showed a correlation between the resistances of the fiber to its diameter.

"The heat transfer conditions on the outer side of a Sirosmelt lance have been determined using experimental measurements in combination with a mathematical model. By measuring the temperature distribution along the wall of an operating Sirosmelt lance, as well as the thickness of the slag layer on it, it was possible to use the model to determine both the heat transfer coefficient between the vessel contents and the lance, as well as the effective thermal conductivity of the slag layer. The effective thermal conductivity of the slag layer was found to be within the range 0.7-1.3 W.m-1. ºCl, which was in good agreement with measured values for magnetite. The outside heat transfer coefficient varied from 80 to ISO W.m-2. ºC1, which was smaller than quoted in the literature for metal/slag systems. The discrepancy was attributed to the high thermal resistance experienced between the lance wall and the slag layer, as well as the large quantities of combustion gases that envelop the lance tip and reduce convection and conduction from the melt to the lance. INTRODUCTIONThe Sirosmelt submerged combustion smelting process [1] utilizes top injection lances to deliver fuel and air into a metallurgical melt. To help prevent lance failure from attack by liquid slag, helical vane swirlers are used within the annular lance to impart swirl to the flowing air and enhance the heat transfer from the lance wall to the air. The swirlers thus cool the wall, and enable a frozen layer of slag to form on its outer surface. This solid layer ensures liquid slag cannot reach the lance surface, and the lance is protected.A mathematical model of the heat transfer processes associated with the lance has been developed, which combines heat balance equations with engineering correlations to predict the wall and cooling air temperature of the lance, as well as the air pressure distribution. An account of the model was given by Rankin et al. [2]. To further enhance the model and enable it to predict the thickness of slag accumulating on the lance, a detailed analysis of the heat flow through the slag layer commenced in 1992. Bacterial oxidation of an arsenopyritic gold-ore .concentrate was carried out with continuous-flow .operation in 14-liter, mechanically agitated reactors. Samples from the slurry reactors were separated into solid and liquid fractions and analyzed separately to determine the electrochemical rates of sulfide conversion by the bacteria and the rates of direct bacterial oxidation of sulfide. The rates of the individual mechanisms are compared to the overall rates of biooxidation in the continuous-flow slurry reactors. The results show that the commonly hypothesize4 direct and indirect mechanisms of biooxidation both play a significant role in the bacterial oxidation of sulfide ores.
