Analysis of the data produced by a wide-band, sensitive, horizontal, biaxial motion sensor has revealed several distinctive patterns before, during, and after a roof fall. The signals prior to the roof fall are similar in spectra, but one thousand times larger in amplitude, than those after the roof fall. Immediately preceding the roof fall, by two to twelve hours, five events occurred which were larger in amplitude and lower in frequency than even the large pre-roof fall background signals. An interpretation of these events is offered.

The Alaska Station of the Bureau of Mines has recently conducted tests on two tailings from black sand which had been treated previously at the Station. The results of this previous treatment have be on given in a paper entitled "Recovery of Gold from Black Sand by Classifier Concentration." The gold in these tailings was intimately united with quartz, and was so finely divided that it could not be detected with the naked eye, nor even by P&nn ing unless the material was ground. Its fineness is further shown by the assºy result, which reported only lz per cent of the gold content as "metallics", Wºorea's the assay of the original sand reported 36 per cent of the gold as "metallics." The fact that the gold was in such fine particles, closely united with quartz, precluded further recovery by amalgamation without grinding. On the other hand, the small content present, as well as the lack of grinding appliances at the placer mines of Alasia, made it necessary that the material be cheaply handled if at all. With these facts in mind the experiments described below were undertake.n.

A seismic system which utilizes in-mine geophones to detect trapped miners has been developed. Tests at the Bureau of Mines Safety Research Mine at Bruceton, Pa., and at two operating mines indicate such a system has a maximum detection range in excess of 1,000 feet. The system is field worthy and portable and requires less than 30 minutes to set up and check. Real-time detection is possible.

"ORIGIN OF INVESTIGATIONThe Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States, July 24J 1946, contains the following provisions with regard to rock dusting: Article VI. - Section 2. Rock dusting.(a) All mines, except those mines or those locations in a mine which are too wet or too high in incombustible content to propagate an explosion, shall be rock-dusted to within 80 feet of the faces of rooms and entries; however, if the mine or any part of it is wet but becomes dry, the mine or portion of the mine so affected shall be rock-dusted as ·soon as it becomes dry. (b) In mines partially rock-dusted or in mines that are required to start rock dusting, haulageways and parallel entries connected thereto by open crosscuts shall be rock-dusted. Back entries shall be rock-dusted for at least 1,000 feet outby the junction with the first active entry. Inby this junction, the rooms, entries, and crosscuts shall be rock-dusted by generalized rock dusting as provided for in section 2(a).(c) Where rock dust is applied, it shall be distributed upon the top, floor, and sides of all open places and maintained in such quantity that the incombustible content of the mine dust will not be less than 65 percent. In trackless entries and air courses, protection in lieu of generalized rock dusting may be had by using bags filled with rock dust, if they are placed at regular intervals and staggered as described in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3411."

As part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines program to reduce the Nation's reliance on foreign supplies for critical metals, a procedure was devised to separate and recover critical metals from mixed and contaminated super alloy scrap. The process uses both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods to treat the scrap. The mixed scrap is converted to a matte containing 4 to 7 pct S by adding S directly to the molten metal. This matte is then granulated and ground to a minus 35-mesh particle size and leached with an HCI-CI2 solution. This process takes essentially all the Ni, Co, Cr, Fe, AI, and Mo into solution in a 3-h leach, leaving W, Ta, Ti, and Nb (Cb) in the residue. The Mo is recovered from the chloride leach solution by solvent extraction, and the Cr and Fe are recovered together by precipitation. The Ni and Co can be recovered individually by an existing solvent extraction-electrowinning process. The W is recovered by a caustic leach of oxidized Cl2 leach residue.

"Co-Directors, Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable DustEarly in the 1980s, the U.S. Bureau of Mines initiated the concept of the Generic Center, incorporating it into its mining research program, and in 1983, the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust was established. The Generic Center concept was first envisioned by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as a way to bring together the various different scientific, engineering and medical research interests in the respirable dust area to effect a coordinated and efficient organization for advancing knowledge in that field. The result was a combination of the collective talents and skills of more than 100 scientists, engineers, medical personnel and graduate students, through the formation of a consortium of five major research universities, including medical facilities, to perform respirable dust research. The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust consortium comprises The Pennsylvania State University (with its Hershey Medical Center) and West Virginia University (with its Medical Center) as the lead universities and the University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Michigan Technological University as affiliates.Although respirable dust-related disease remains the nation's worst industrial hazard, the fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with the mining and milling industries, including the interaction of dust and lungs, has grown significantly over the past near-decade toward the larger effort to reduce the incidence and severity of disease caused by respirable dust. Continued progress toward making the mine work environment cleaner and healthier remains the immediate objective of the Respirable Dust Center.The Respirable Dust Center's research program and technology transfer activities, described in this paper, exemplify the Generic Center concept first envisioned by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Interdisciplinary and interactive studies continue to result in significant progress toward making mine atmospheres cleaner and healthier."

This paper describing the methods and costs of quarrying limestone at Sloan, Nev., is one of a series of similar papers being prepared for and published by the Bureau of Mines on this industry in the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods Employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The quarrying operations at Sloan are interesting not only from a technical viewpoint and because of the magnitude of the deposit, but also because the quarry is located in a desert region far removed from the centers of population where lime is used. The quarry and plant are in Clark County, Nev., 20 miles west of Las Vegas, which is the nearest town to the site of the Boulder Canyon Dam. Sloan is on the main line of the Union Pacific Railroad connecting Salt Lke City and Los Angeles. The latter city is 280 miles from Sloan and it is the shipping, point for all supplies.

The ignition problem: for a layer of firedamp bordering on a cloud of detonation products is evidently considerably more complicated than in the usual laboratory ignition experiments, in which a well-defined volume of gas is heated and the occurrence of ignition is observed after an induction period. An atmosphere of firedamp exposed to the detonation of a high explosive is subjected to heating by shock-wave compression and thermal conduction and to intermixing at the interface of the firedamp atmosphere and the cloud of deto¬nation products. Although a reliable physical-chemical analysis of the problem is not yet possible, one may nevertheless form a general view of the role of compression waves and the processes of heat transfer and diffusion at the interface. Near the mouth of a shot hole, or near a freely suspended cartridge, the firedamp atmosphere attains very high temperatures by adiabatic compression, and it is certain that such temperatures are sufficient to initiate chemical reaction. The pressure wave pattern is reproducible from one test charge to another if the initial experimental conditions are held constant; on the other hand, experiments on firedamp ignition do not yield a reproducible threshold condition for ignition, but only an ignition probability. Thus, the induction periods are sufficiently long that there is time for the compressed', heated gas layers to undergo random changes that may quench or promote ignition. Therefore, the analysis of the ignition problem hinges primarily on the discovery of the random events that modify the chemical reaction in the activated gas layers.

The Bureau of Mines monitored surface subsidence and water level fluctuations in 10 shallow observation wells above a series of four adjacent longwall panels in southwestern Pennsylvania, for about 4 yr. This study attempted to correlate the changes in the water levels within the observation wells to the measured vertical and horizontal ground movements associated with subsidence. Results of this study indicate that the fluctuation of the water levels appears to be a function of the well location relative to the mine layout and the proximity of mining. Wells are generally unaffected by mining of a preceding panel unless they are located within the angle of draw for that panel. Wells located at the centerline of a longwall panel exhibit the greatest fluctuation and head loss. This relationship may be related to the strain developed by the advancing longwall face. The water levels in the wells monitored fell at the greatest rate when the ground surrounding the well was in tension. The rate of the decline decreased as the dynamic development of the strains was changing from tension to compression. The water levels were found to be near the premining level before the ground was subject to maximum compressive strain. Nine of the ten wells investigated recovered to their premining water level after mining was completed.

The Bureau of Mines studied the extraction of lithium from lithium-containing clays by chlorination with hydrogen chloride (HC1). In bench-scale laboratory investigations, HC1-H20 mixtures were used to selectively chlorinate lithium, but not calcium or magnesium, in lithium-containing clays. The addition of calcium carbonate to the clay was found to improve the lithium recovery. Reaction conditions found to affect the lithium recovery were ratio of clay to carbonate, reaction temperature, and HC1 concentration. The best conditions for selective chlorination of the lithium were 2:1 clay-carbonate, 750° C, and 20 wt-pct HC1. The experimental results and trends in lithium extraction are explained using thermodynamic relationships.

Equipment has been designed and fabricated for study of the vaporization of oil during gas-cycling operations, A sand-packed steel tube, which can be rotated to minimize gravity drainage, is used as a model oil reservoir. A minute windowed cell at the discharge end of the tube through which the liquid-gas interface may be observed, makes possible the separate removal of produced free gas and gas-saturated oil. The operation of the model oil reservoir, and auxiliary equipment, are described by use of a schmatic flow diagram. Details of the specially designed equipment are illustrated by isometric and pictorial drawings, and a description of the experimental procedure is given.

"During the mining process, the insitu material is broken into different size ranges, from very, large pieces to very fine particles. Some of the fine particles become airborne. In underground coal mining, airborne respirable. dust is associated with health and safety of the miners: The amount and size distributions of airborne dust are important parameters to effective dust control measures. The design of underground mine experiments, including sampling procedures and sample analyses methods to determine these parameters are presented in this paper.. A total of fifteen continuous miner cuts were sampled. The amount of dust generated during the cutting process and the relationship between total and respirable airborne dust concentrations and amounts are examined.The amount of respirable dust airborne is on the average only. 0.016% of the respirable dust generated. On the average, 61% of the total .airborne dust measured is in the respirable size range. The amount of respirable airborne' is on the average 36% of the respirable size fraction in the total airborne dust. For equal proportion of rock and coal material cut, rock contributes about twice as much fines (<0.22 mm) as coal. Additional fundamental research is necessary to further the understanding of 'the airborne propensity of respirable dusts in mine atmospheres.INTRODUCTIONMining is a sequential process of breaking, gathering, loading, and transporting the in-situ .materials.' In underground coal mines, duet in both the non-respirable and respirable size ranges is generated and entrained in every phase of the process. Even though large amounts of dust particles' adhere to run-of-mine coals, part of the dust generated becomes airborne (Cheng and Zukovich, 1973). Studies have shown that bit type affects the amount of dust generated'(Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Kurth et al., 1975; Roepke et al., 1976; Stecklein et al., 1982; and Khair and 'Reddy, 1986). Deep cutting can reduce airborne dust generation (Black and Schmidt, 1977 arid, Black et 1978). Mechanical properties of. coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. Laboratory studies have shown that Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) of the coal has a relationship with the amount of respirable. dust generated (Beafi and Ramani, 1979; Moore and Bise, 1984; and Moore, 1986). However, these relationships have not yet been validated with' data from the mines. The amount of dust airborne depends on a number of factors. Suppression of the airborne propensity of dust by water sprays is'widely practiced and is very effective. Water flow rate; pressure and configuration of water sprays have been identified as major factors affecting dust capture by sprays (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Courtney et al., 1978; and Kissell et al., 1979). Ventilation is a very important means of controlling the dust level at the coal face (Jayaraman, 1977). According to a National Academy of Sciences study (1980), the mechanism of dust generation and the process by which the generated dust becomes airborne are complex and not yet completely understood coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. "An airborne dust cloud is an ensemble of particles of varied size, density, shape and states of aggregation. An understanding and quantifying of the dispersion and deposition of the du.st generated in mines is essential to the development of measures for reducing worker exposure to dust.In coal mining, the major portion of the dust is generated during the cutting of coal using a shearer or a continuous miner. The major phenomenon affecting ambient concentration is the deposition of dust. Panicle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian and eddy diffusion and inenial impaction. The three major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. The mechanisms determining panicle deposition are size dependent.From a review of the literature, there appears to be a knowledge gap in the understanding of the deposition phenomena in mine airways. In order to obtain a better understanding of the deposition of dust for various particle sizes, and to develop a set of data for evaluating predictive mathematical models/or dust flow in mines, a series of dust-flow experiments was performed under controlled conditions in mine airways. It appears that the deposition data generally follow the theoretical behavior of dust based on the combined effect of diffusional and gravitational deposition. Jn this paper, the findings of the study on the deposition of dust in mine airways and its dependence on size, velocity and concentration are discussed. A set of deposition equations that could be used to determine the approximate deposition at various points in a mine airway are presented.IntroductionThe major factor affecting ambient dust concentration in mine airways is the deposition of dust. Particle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inenial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian diffusion, eddy diffusion and inertial impaction. The major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. Inertial impaction is significant only during changes in direction, but the change in direction of flow with resultant powerful eddies may cause increased re-entrainment of the particles, thus having a compensating effect. While the literature in aerosol sciences contain several references on deposition, most studies were done in small diameter tubes for diffusional deposition (Liu and Agarwal, 1974). The deposition data from small diameter, short tube experiments may not be applicable to studying deposition in mine airways that have large areas and extend several hundred meters. Further, the change in concentration along the length of a mine airway may significantly affect the deposition an aspect that may not be easily determined in short tubes in laboratory experiments."

This experiment investigated the effects of different machine mounted area lighting technologies on visual performance. The primary objective was to conduct a comparative evaluation of the lighting technologies based on the visual performance of thirty-six human subjects in a simulated underground mine environment. Incandescent (Incand), fluorescent (Fluor), and light-emitting diode (LED) technologies were used to create four lighting combinations. Visual performance was quantified for the detection of movement in the peripheral field of view and the identification of ground hazards. Measurements were made of the speed [response time measured in milliseconds (ms)], the accuracy (the number of targets and objects missed), and the subjective discomfort rating of the glare experienced for each lighting combination. A secondary objective explored the effects of aging on visual performance. The results indicate that lighting combinations which consisted of LED area lights significantly improved visual performance for the detection of hazards found in the peripheral field of view, as well as those found on the ground. They furthermore, indicate that age plays a significant role in visual performance.

Ventilation of underground workings consists of establishment of such control of air currents that the underground workers may work in safety, with maximum comfort and efficiency, mad without impairment of health; and that the mine openings may be made subject to such control of air flow as to remove from the workings at ordinary times harmful gases and dusts, and at time of emergency, such as fire or explosion, there may be maintained as much or as little air flow as may be desired covering portions of the mine or the mine in its entirety. Control of air flow is the keystone of any ventilating structure, and this very essential feature is obtainable only by the installation of mechanically operated fans, to ether with other ventilating devices such as doors, overcasts, regulators, etc. Every mine, large or shall, coal or metal, should from the outset be equipped with a fan. While much has been written about natural ventilation and many claims have been made that in specific mines there is sufficient natural al" flow, there are few if any mines, coal or metal, where natural ventilation supplies anything like adequately safe or healthful conditions for underground workers even at ordinary times; and at a time of mine fire or explosion the mines depending upon natural ventilation are practically helpless, and certainly are decidedly dangerous to those unfortunates forced to be in them.

An investigation has been made to determine the applicability of the Cendrex3 X-ray instrument for the measurement of the ash content of washed bituminous coal products. The results obtained for selected products from six preparation plants in the Appalachian region and one preparation plant in the mid-western region are described. Emphasis of the study was placed on low-ash bituminous coal products suitable for utility or metallurgical markets. There was good agreement between the results obtained by conventional ash determination methods and by ash determination using the Cendrex for all products tested.

An ethanolamine purification unit for removing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from Firscher-Tropsch synthesis gas was installed at the Bureau of Mines synthetic liquid fuels demonstration plant at Louisiana, Mo. The unit was a surplus Radford Girbotol unit from the Missouri Ordnance Works modified for a capacity of 90,000 std. cu. ft per hour of synthesis gas at 450 p.s.i.g., operating pressure. The hydrogen sulfide loading of the feed gas was specified at 500 grains per 100 cu. Ft. The unit was designed by the Girdler Corp. and installed by the Koppers Co. Initial operations were conducted far 11 days in May 1951. Thereafter 7 additional runs were made, varying lo duration from 8 to 54 days. The last run was terminated on May 29, 1953, the total time the Plant wars in operation being 219 days.
